The Big Event is Saturday. The spring football game will begin at 10 a.m., The Big Event volunteering is scheduled to last from noon-3 p.m. Volunteers will be dispersed to job sites in Chadron, Crawford, and one in Whitney.

Country Music Artist Rodney Atkins will perform at CSC Friday. The concert will begin at 7 p.m., and the BBQ will begin at 5 p.m. The BBQ will be in the grass between the Student Center and Math and Science building. The concert will be in the NPAC. Students must bring their student IDs with them to both.

The Eagle wins fifth ‘Best in Overall Excellence’ award Eagle Staff

The Eagle captured its fifth straight “Best in Overall Excellence” title in the Nebraska Collegiate Media Association’s annual Golden Leaf Awards, presented Saturday, this year, at CSC. The Eagle staff earned awards in 19 of 19 individual categories, and scored points in 18 of 19 categories. It earned only an honorable mention, which does not score points toward the best overall title, in category No. 19, Photo Illustration.

“The Eagle was already an award-winning paper when I took over as managing editor,” said Jordyn Hulinsky, junior of St. Paul. “There was already a tradition set, and I just tried to keep up the expectations we have for ourselves. Our previous managing editor, Ashley Swanson, showed me a lot and I just tried to keep up the standards.”

Hulinsky assumed the managing editor’s post at the start of the spring term in January after former managing editor Ashley Swanson, now News Editor at the Clay County News, Sutton, graduated in December 2014.

The newspaper competition is broken into 19 individual categories covering writing and visual presentation, such as design, layout and photography. Eligible entries must have been published between March 1, 2014, and Feb. 28 this year.

All NCMA newspapers may submit no more than five entries per category; individual students may enter no more than two pieces per category.

Students from the NCMA’s seven member schools who competed this year earned points for their respective newspapers for placing first (5 points), second (3 points) or third (1 point) in each of those 19 categories. The points each student earns are then totaled to determine which newspaper earns the title, “Best in Overall Excellence.” The NCMA awards no more than two honorable mentions per category.

Twelve different student journalists from The Eagle scored points across 15 categories, while the staff garnered points in three other categories.

The Eagle earned eight first-place awards, worth 40 points; 10 second places, worth 30 points; and seven third places, worth seven points; for a cumulative score of 77 points. That total is six points higher than what The Eagle staff accrued in 2013 and again in 2014, when it finished with 71 points each

Media professionals outside of Nebraska judged the competition.

“I think it is important, highly important, that our students know, and that our readers know, just exactly who it is that is judging the work,” Kennedy said. “It also is important to note that our consistent performance in the best overall category has been going on for seven years, now. I think few people remember that, in addition to the five consecutive first places, The Eagle finished second in the “Best in Overall Excellence” category in 2009 and 2010.”

Kennedy also pointed out that the success of The Eagle goes beyond the student newsroom.

“The consistent high marks we receive from the very professionals who might hire our students points directly to the quality, credibility and consistency of two things,” Kennedy said, “the high standards our students employ in producing The Eagle and csceagle.com, and the high standards of our academic program, which feeds both of those media.”

csceagle.com earns top honors in NCMA Digital Media Eagle Staff

The Eagle’s website, csceagle.com, captured first in “Excellence in Digital Medium,” the top award in the digital medium competition of the Nebraska Collegiate Media Association’s Golden Leaf Awards, presented Saturday at the association’s annual conference hosted this year at Chadron State College.

This is the second time in four years csceagle.com took top honors in the Digital Medium division.

The website’s win, coupled with The Eagle’s fifth straight “Best in Overall Excellence” title in the newspaper division, places the staff earning top spots in two of the NCMA’s four media division competitions.

In addition to newspaper and digital medium, NCMA operates competitions in radio and television divisions.

“Hannah Clark, our web editor, worked really hard this last year to improve our website,” The Eagle Managing Editor Jordyn Hulinsky, junior of St. Paul, said. “The rest of the editors used social media and our website more than in the past. So we’re all really excited we won first in Digital Media this year.”

The digital medium division’s competition is broken into 12 individual categories from breaking news stories to use of a digital medi-

um for public service, to emerging platforms, to community collaboration.

Eligible entries must have been posted on the site between March 1, 2014, and Feb. 28 this year.

Students from the NCMA’s seven member schools who competed this year earned points for their respective websites for placing first (5 points), second (3 points) or third (1 point) in each of those 12 categories. Honorable mentions do not earn points. The points each student earns are then totaled to determine which website earns the “Excellence in Digital Medium” title.

The csceagle.com staff submitted 25 entries. Six students scored points in eight of the 12 categories, while the whole staff scored five points for winning first place in the Community Collaboration category for its coverage of The Big Event in April 2014.

The website earned six first-place awards, worth 30 points; two second-place awards, worth six points; and two third places, worth two points, for a cumulative score of 38 points toward the best overall title. The staff also earned four honorable mentions, bringing its individual award total to 15, plus the best overall title, for a total of 16 awards in the division.

Hulinsky garnered the most individual awards with five. Hulinsky teamed up with News Editor Sarah Townsend, junior of Douglas, Wyoming, to win the Investigative Journalism category.

Hulinsky also entered a solo piece to win the Promotional Content category. She also paired up with former Managing Editor Ashley Swanson, who graduated in December 2014, to finish third in the Emerging Platforms category.

Hulinsky also garnered two honorable mentions – one for a second entry in Promotional Content the other for a team piece written with Lifestyles Editor Janelle Kesterson, junior of Bridgeport, in the Digital Breaking News Story category.

Kesterson and Townsend co-wrote a different news piece that captured first in the breaking news category.

Swanson, now News Editor at The Clay

County News, Sutton, also teamed up with Townsend and the work they produced together took first in the Use of Digital Technology category.

The Eagle’s Opinion Editor Robert “Spike” Jordan, senior of Harrison, earned three awards, first place in the Multimedia Features category, and third place and an honorable mention, both in the Promotional Content category.

Hannah Clark, senior of Littleton, Colorado, and editor of csceagle.com, earned a second-place award in the Use of a Digital Medium for Public Service category. Clark also is a feature writer for The Eagle.

“Hannah has stepped up and embraced her role as our web editor and she does a stellar job,” Kennedy said. “She is a talented writer and editor, and a dedicated leader, committed to excellence in all she does.”

“It’s an honor to receive the award,” Clark said about csceagle’s first place finish in overall excellence. “But my division, Digital Medium, is never an individual endeavor. The Eagle’s website in particular was a collective effort of not only myself, but of many previous web editors, including Kevin Oleksy who created the original design. My fellow staff members managed social media and assisted in regularly uploading content.”

Student Senate swears in new members Jaycie Cheatham Reporter The recommended club budgets for next year were not approved due to a lack of communication. The Student Senate is expected to receive a total budget of $160,000 and this was thought to be the amount that could be allocated towards clubs, not as the entire budget. The AFB presented the clubs’ budget proposals, which totaled to $154,114.90 in allocated funds, almost 95 percent of Senate’s budget. (see story below) Senate President Katrina Hurley and Senate Advisers will meet with Vice President of Finance Dale Grant to determine the exact amount that can be allocated to clubs including the rollover funds from the current year.

The recommended budgets will be reviewed and voted on at next week’s meeting.

Clubs were not penalized for inactivity, but for tardiness submitting their budget packets or for not attending their budget meetings.

College Republican’s club was the only club recommended to be denied any funds due to a forged signature on their budget packet and lack of leadership.

Stipulations for what the clubs can and cannot spend funds are in the process of being reviewed in the bylaws and budget packets for next year.

Chief Justice Coy Clark swore in Hurley as the new Student Senate President.

Karson Langley was elected the new Vice President, but was not present for her induction so current Vice

President Taylor Strong will remain in office until next week’s meeting.

Clark also swore in the student senator elects: Senators-At-Large, Mauro Ovando, Gavan Archibald, Joshua Mayer, and Nathaniel Jones; School Senator of Liberal Arts, Nathaniel Brown and Chelsea Evans; School Senator of BEAMSS, Tileen Sullivan; School Senator of EHPCPS, Annie Johnson Senate elect Syerra Wycoff-Bagshaw was absent from the meeting and will be sworn in next week.

There were some complications with Senate procedure when nominating and voting on Vice President of Finance and Secretary positions.

After the confusion, Jones was sworn in as the new vice president of finance and Johnson was sworn in as the new secretary.

Student Senate reported $36,443.25 in unallocated funds.

CAB Chair Andy Martin wanted to remind students that May 2 will be the Luau themed free bowling night and May 3 will be the free movie night. Martin hopes to get “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” to be one of the movie options.

Jones reported that unfortunately Lucinda Mays, the grounds supervisor, couldn’t get 70 shrubs for their campus beautification process without pre-ordering them. Jones requested that Senate allow them to move to phase two of their project, which is planting trees and ordering furniture for the area with the allocated $4,000. Next year, Jones plans to request funds for the original plan to plant shrubs around the area as well.

Student AFB rejects College Republicans Club’s funding request; cites forged signature Sarah Townsend News Editor

The student Activity Fee Board recommended that Student Senate not fund the College Republicans Club for academic year 2015-16 after the board received a complaint about a forged signature on the club’s budget request packet.

At Monday’s Student Senate meeting, Kelley McNabb, cochair of AFB and CAB vice chair of finance, told the Senate that the board was made aware of a forged signature on the College Republicans Club’s budget request packet. That information led the AFB to reject the club’s $3,000 request, and recommend to Senate that the club receive no funding.

“The board did what they thought was best,” McNabb said Wednesday. “The board received a complaint of a forged signature, and then decided what to do.”

McNabb also said that the board alerted administrators about the issue and added that two administrators, Senate Adviser Deena Kennell and Senior Director of Student Affairs Pat Beu, were present at the club’s appeal hearing Monday afternoon before

Student Senate’s 5 p.m. meeting.

Wednesday afternoon, Beu said he could not give any information about how the administration will respond.

During the Senate meeting, McNabb said that “the club only has three active members.” She said Wednesday, the club’s budget packet states 20 members. Luton said Wednesday the club has about 20 members.

College Republicans Club President Marci Luton, junior of Grand Island, said she could not comment about whether club members knew a signature was forged when the budget packet was submitted to AFB. “Unfortunate circumstances led to unfortunate decisions which led to consequences of which the College Republicans Club will abide by,” Luton stated in an instant message Wednesday.

“A mistake was made during the budget packet process and it was corrected,” Student Trustee and College Republicans Club Secretary Mikayla Gallagher stated Tuesday, also in an instant message.

Senate is expected to vote at it’s next meeting Monday on AFB’s recommendations.

Club funding still pending Jordyn Hulinsky & Jaycie Cheatham Managing Editor & Reporter Clubs were not allocated money Monday at the Senate meeting because there was miscommunication about how much money the Activity Fee Board was allowed to allocate to clubs.

Before Monday’s meeting, AFB’s Co-Chair Kelley McNabb said, they hoped they’d get money allocated for clubs this week.

Wednesday afternoon, McNabb said, Laure Sinn, adviser to the AFB, found out from a member of the administration what money they had to allocate to clubs. That number was what the board based their recommendations off of.

Sinn said, Student Financial Comptroller Kari Gaswick told Sinn that they had $160,000 for allocation. Sinn explained that the money comes from a revolving fund, so $160,000 is only a projection of what Student Senate is hoping to get.

Gaswick said she was “asked to estimate how much revenue CSC will collect next year for the Activity Fee account.”

McNabb said she found out the number they were given was incorrect at the Senate meeting.

A member of the AFB and current Senate President Katrina Hurley said, “At the executive board meeting (Monday prior to Senate), we found out that the proposed money number they had given us was possibly the entire amount Senate can allocate. There was miscommunication with some of our advisers on the amount that we will be getting. Normally, they give up one amount that we can allocate to clubs and one amount that we have for the rest of the year. The two numbers are in dis-

cussion,” Hurley said Wednesday afternoon.

Current Vice President of Senate Taylor Strong repeated that statement saying, “The total amount that AFB was suggested to allocate to clubs was not presented to Senate until Monday at the Student Senate Executive Board meeting, where the potential issue was address.”

Strong said, “The numbers were not incorrect. There was a misinterpretation at the fault of no one as to how much money there was for Senate as a whole, including CAB, all of the clubs, as well as the larger events on campus that Senate funds, including The Big Event and the Nearly Naked Mile.”

She said AFB suggested a much larger number for allocations compared to last year and that is the issue being looked at before approving allocations.

At Monday’s Senate meeting, new senators and executive board members were sworn in. Therefore, old senators will no longer have a chance to vote on the club’s budgets for next year.

Strong said because the new senators have already been sworn in there is “no way” that the old senators can vote because “it’s a done deal” after the new senators are sworn in.

Hurley and three Senate advisers plan to meet with Dale Grant, administration & finance vice president, Thursday to discuss the way this issue can be solved, Hurley said.

Strong said Grant told her, “There are sufficient funds in the Student Activity Fee account to give all of the suggested allocations to clubs and still leave Senate with plenty of funds for CAB and other larger events funded through Senate.”

The recommendations will still have to be approved by Senate and the administration.

We can still do better T

he semester is coming quickly to a close, and we’re reminded every week by our adviser to remain vigilant and finish strong.

“You are only as good as the last thing you did.”

It’s a mantra that can serve us all. We’re still glowing from our award victories, but the glow wears off quickly and then it’s back to work. There are stories to write and final projects to finish, but we wanted to reflect on a winning entry that took the editorial staff by surprise.

The entry that took first in opinion writing was our editorial, “We erred, we’re sorry” (The Eagle, Feb. 27). When the editors discussed the awards, it seemed peculiar that particular entry won.

However, it signals something important: taking accountability for your actions is so rare in our world today that when you actually do it, you are commended. While we are still working to repair our relationship with our readers; we want to reaffirm and double-down on the promises we have made.

But we also want your feedback when errors and inaccuracies occur. A letter to the editor is the quickest way to ensure that errors are brought to our attention and corrected, an example was a letter we received last fall (Deane Tucker on article caption error, The Eagle, Oct. 30, 2014).

When we receive a letter, we will issue a correction in the following issue and amend the original article, along with publishing your letter. This not only helps make sure things are accurate for the public record, it also helps us keep on our toes.

The bear is backed in a corner Wayne Robison Columnist His perpetually constipated expression and a talentless campaign team notwithstanding, Mitt Romney got a few things right. including his prescient declaration of Russia as our “number one geopolitical foe.” Romney was ridiculed for this statement at the time by his opponent, Barack Obama.

Unfortunately, Romney has been proven right; President Obama and the rest of world seriously underestimated the sleeping bear.

Under the perpetual leadership of Vladimir “shirts are for girls” Putin, Russia has become arguably the greatest threat to global peace in the 21st century. After invading a sovereign nation, Russian backed soldiers claimed Crimea as their own and shot down a civilian airliner.

Nearly nine months after the downing of the aircraft, war still rages in Ukraine. Civilians and soldiers alike are being killed by Russian Army soldiers curiously seized by a sudden urge to defect in droves and volunteer to serve under the command of Russian backed rebels.

Disturbing parallels may be drawn between this and a similar violation of sovereignty, the Defensive War of 1939.

Germany invaded Poland because, if you believe Hitler, “Germans in Poland are persecuted with bloody terror and driven from their homes.” Putin employed almost the same justification for Russia’s annexation of Crimea, saying that ethnic Russians were being persecuted by the Ukrainian government.

The response by the rest of the world powers also mirrors the response of the world in 1939. There has been much hand-wringing and finger-wagging, but no real response of aid to Ukraine.

Russia today, after losing 6.02 million sq. km, is a mere geographic shadow of the once-mighty USSR. Like the bully humiliated after losing a fight, Russia has come back just as violent, but smarter. By stoking anti-Western paranoia and blaming all economic troubles (rightly so) upon U.S. led sanctions, Putin has utilized the state controlled media to gain the support of the Russian people.

Nationalism is experiencing a resurgence in Russia as citizens feel threatened, ignored, and disrespected by the rest of the world. The Russian military has stepped up aggressive maneuvers towards other countries including 39 aerial and marine incidents in an eightmonth span during 2014. Putin’s brazen disregard for the sovereignty of Ukraine, coupled with Russia’s aggressive military posturing, has brought NATO to high alert, as well it should.

Putin obviously feels backed into a corner, and we all know what happens when you corner a bear.

A call for student responsibility Sarah Polak Contributor

T

his semester I have chosen to return to the classroom as a student. It is a one credit class on picture matting and framing. I have learned so much from this class, but I have found that I have not taken responsibility for my coursework.

My instructor has been sincerely kind and understanding about my classroom attendance. The class that I am taking is during the middle of my work day, thus I am not always able to make class due to phone calls, meetings, and giving tours. I think that most instructors at CSC are understanding. Many of us were low-income and/or first generation students. We completely under-

stand that students need to work to eat.

Having said that, I have to admit that I have been taking advantage of my instructor’s kindness, and I know that as a student I am not alone in this.

I could be going into the lab to work on my homework rather than sitting at home writing an editorial for the stu-

dent newspaper, watching TV, or doing laundry. I also know that from my experience as a teacher here at CSC that my students take advantage of my kindness.

In the syllabus, it states (or should state) that for every one hour of credit, we are to spend a minimum of 3 hours of work. I know from an instructor side, I spend at least that much per class. As a student, I am not quite there yet.

I am asking you, my fellow students, to step it up! Want to know WHY the syllabus is six pages long? It is because of some person five semesters ago made a stink about what the word “day due” meant. Ugh. We, as students, pay too much money and expend too much mental energy to not at least TRY to end the semester strong. I am off to the lab to…. Ooh, my show is on now. Gotta go.

want to lay out some things that might help make the working relationship between the student government and campus media a little more beneficial for us both.

But first, I want to congratulate Katrina Hurley on the Big W. While Ms. Hurley doesn’t have exhaustive experience playing a Saxophone abroad, I still think she can bring something to the table and maybe work to build a more solid relationship between Senate and The Eagle.

Better prepare the Senate agenda I think the Senate executive board will benefit if they’re more pro-active in preparing the agenda. The military adage of “7 Ps” can be put into place here: Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. I think they would do well by sending the Senate’s meeting agenda to the news editor a week in advance.

The editorial board holds its meetings on Wednesday nights after we send the week’s issue to the printers; as soon as we are done with one week’s edition, we are already working on what we have for the next week. What this means is that the agenda cannot be decided the day of a meeting; you need to give the press (and the student body) a whole week (and sometimes more) to hear about an issue before you discuss it.

In my mind, this would be beneficial

to Senate and help readers know if its worth their time to appear at the next week’s meeting or write a letter to the editor to voice concerns about a project they care about.

The Senate can only benefit from providing crucial information to students.

Advance notice also gives our reporters time to contact the committee chairs or Senators who are working on the issues, which gives them adequate time to write reports that are as in-depth, clear, and accurate as possible.

As we’ve all learned this semester, mistakes are made when we’re given information on short notice.

Give Senators more time to decide Introducing something one week and putting it up to a vote during that same meeting or the week following doesn’t help you. To a critic, that looks as though you’re trying to railroad projects through in order to avoid criticism.

If that’s your prerogative, then I believe you deserve criticism, but you can avoid that by fostering a healthy debate before sending something to a vote.

I’ve tried doing that with the Senator’s letters justifying their votes on the NCSL trips, but I think we need to do that with more issues. Coupled with releasing the agenda in advance, it will give more time for students to write in and respond about key issues.

I feel much of the breakdown in how the Senate leadership operates comes from a lack of understanding of how media works, (or how it is supposed to work). Senators can always come up to the newsroom and spend a day in the life of a journalist, but maybe that’s too much (I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemies).

One important thing to realize is that The Eagle is not a High School newspaper. We do news, not charity; we don’t owe you flattery. If you accomplish something and you are proud of it, you are welcome to submit a press release and we’ll have a reporter write something. Or, you can pen an op-ed for the Opinion pages, (that’s always been an option, but there have been few takers).

But if you’re continually making mistakes, and don’t want to voice dissent when there’s a problem, you deserve every bit of criticism for your complicity in those mistakes. You are elected to represent students first, college second.

It also needs to be understood that criticism is not “negative,” it is necessary. It means that people are paying attention to what you’re doing and voicing how they feel about it. You might do better to listen for once.

The CSC track teams traveled to California this past week to compete in several meets around the Los Angeles area. The men’s team won the 4x400 relay Friday night at the Bryan Clay Invitational Track and Field meet hosted

by Asuza Pacific University, while the women broke the CSC 4x400 relay record and placed fourth in the event.

The CSC 4x400 relay team placed a time of 3 minutes 15.26 seconds. The runners that made up the team were freshman Lane Higgins, of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; senior Jazz Bozner, of Rock Springs, Wyoming; junior Zerek Jones, of La Junta, Colorado; and junior Martin Moriel, of Phoenix.

CSC edged out conference rival Colorado School of Mines in the event by .05 seconds.

During the individual events, Jones took sixth out of 57 entries in the 400 meter race with a time of 48.33, while Moriel placed eighth, with a time of 48.41.

CSC sophomore Chris Cutcher of Colorado Springs, Colorado, finished third in the high hurdles with a time of 14.49.

All-American freshman Damarcus Simpson, of Lafayette, Georgia, placed 10th in the both the long jump and triple jump Friday. At the Mt. Sac relays in Walnut, California, his long jump mark was 24-1/2 which is third best by CSC male. The triple jump mark 47-2 1/2 was at the Bryan Clay Invitational.

The CSC women’s 4x400 relay team placed fourth in the event with a time 3:49.59, which is a new school record.

The members of this relay team were senior Rochelle Nelson, of Kingston, Jamaica; senior Shelby Guy, of Akron, Colorado; junior Tiffany Thomas, of Kingston, Jamaica; and junior Shelby Bozner, of Rock Springs, Wyoming.

For the individual events sophomore Tessa Gorsuch, of Rapid City, South Dakota, placed 11th out of 71 entries in the 100 high hurdles with a time of 14.22. She set her career best this weekend at the California StateLA meet with a time of 14.18.

Bozner placed ninth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:02.57. Sixty-four contestants ran in the event.

Sophomore Nicky Banzhaf, of Chadron, broke the school record in the 5,000 with a time of 17:57.54, which is 13 seconds faster than the previous record set in 2008 by Stacy Girard.

CSC Head Coach Brad Gamble said he was really pleased with both relay teams as well as many of the Eagles’ individual performances.

“This was definitely the best we’ve performed in the four years we’ve gone to California,” Gamble said. “We had numerous really good marks against elite competition. I think we’re going to be ready to do more good things at the conference meet.”

The CSC men’s and women’s track and field teams will be competing in the RMAC Championships May 1-3 in Pueblo, Colorado, hoping to bring home conference titles.

McFadden won the bareback last weekend in Casper. He placed third in the long go-round and second in the short go-round to put him first in the averages. McFadden helped the CSC cowboys take home third place. With only one rodeo remaining, McFadden and the cowboys hope to bring home a conference championship from Laramie, Wyoming.

Haynes went to the RMAC Championships with something to prove. As a freshman, she tied the school record for lowest individual 36-hole score. Haynes was able to save strokes on and around the green, and focus on one shot at a time, helping her earn an individual top 10 finish, as well as helping the team finish in the top 10.

Rodeo team members claim 2 titles Janelle Kesterson Lifestyles Editor Although the CSC cowboy’s did not continue their winning streak during the rodeo hosted by Casper College, members of both CSC’s men’s and women’s rodeo teams excelled this weekend in Casper.

The CSC cowboys and cowgirls were led

by Nate McFadden, senior of Elsmere; Wyatt Clark, graduate student of Wellfleet; and Shaylee Hance, senior of Circle, Montana.

McFadden earned third place in the long go-round of bareback and second in the short go-round. He earned enough points to push him to the lead in the average to take the championship title.

“I was pretty nervous because I had to watch every guy ride before I knew that I had won it, and once I knew that I won I was really excited because it was my first win of my college career,” McFadden said. “I’m just going to practice and workout exactly the same as I have all year to stay prepared for Laramie.”

Clark placed fifth in both go-rounds with 66 and 67 points, and his consistency allowed

him to pick up second in the averages.

Prestyn Novak, freshman of Newell, South Dakota, placed fifth in the steer wrestling averages. He tied for eighth place in the first goround with a time of 5.5 seconds and was fifth in the second go-round with a run of 6.2.

Another CSC steer wrestler, Jake Kasselder, senior of Ericson, won the opening goround with a 4.2 run, but wrestled his second steer in 15.1, which left him short of placing in the averages.

The CSC cowboys scored 275 points in Casper and landed third in the team standings. Gillette College won the men’s championship title with 545 points and Casper College was runner-up with 400 points.

Hance tied for second and third in the first go-round of goat tying with a time of 7.9 and went on to win the second go-round with a time of 7.3 to win the average in the event.

“In the goat tying, I was so nervous, but I was also pretty excited to have a turn around,” Hance said.” “I definitely plan on winning Laramie. My dry spell is over. My mental game has been the biggest thing I’ve been fighting this year so positive thoughts have

been something I’ve been trying to focus on.”

Hance also earned the all-around cowgirl title by reaching the short go-round in three events. She tied for second in the long go-round of breakaway roping with a run of 2.7, and joined with Brandi Cwach, freshman of Geddes, South Dakota, to make the team roping finals. Even though both of those entries took no times in the championship gorounds, Hance earned enough points to win the title of all-around cowgirl.

Cwach, who has improved this spring season, placed third in the goat tying after making an 8.4 run in both the long and short go-rounds.

Danni Jo Hinman, senior of Hay Springs, placed fourth in the breakaway averages after roping her calf in 3.2 in the first go-round and 3.6 in the final go-round.

“I was very pleased with my runs this weekend and I plan on doing the same thing in Laramie,” Hinman said. “I believe that my success came from God. He blessed me with an amazing horse and we are definitely starting to click.”

Amy Deichart, senior of Spearfish, South Dakota, placed sixth in both go-rounds of the

barrel racing with runs of 15.88 and 15.99.

She earned seventh place in the averages. Deichert also made it to the short go-round of the goat tying.

The CSC women’s team, led by Hance, earned runner-up at the Casper rodeo with 205 points, just 15 points behind champion Laramie County Community College, Cheyenne, Wyoming.

“I am very proud of our girl’s team,” Hinman said. “They work hard every day and they have so much talent so it always feels amazing to see it all come together. Can’t wait to see how it all plays out in Laramie.”

The CSC men are now third in the region with 3,280 points total, trailing behind Casper with 3,505 and Gillette with 3,445 on the year with just one rodeo left in the season before the National College Final Rodeo.

“I think the keys to my success this year are Coach (Dustin) Luper and my teammates,” McFadden said. “We push each other to work hard and win. Our team has such a positive attitude this year and that makes rodeo a blast. Success comes way faster when you’re having fun.”

Eagles finish 10th at RMAC Championships Preston Goehring Distribution Manager In the last match of the spring season, the Eagle golf team went out smoking, taking 13 strokes off their previous best. The new team best of 677 was at the RMAC Championships in Avondale, Arizona, enough to finish in 10th place.

Kelli Haynes, a freshman of Whitney, came out red-hot in both rounds, recording a 75 and a 78, respectively. With a 2-round total of 153, Haynes tied CSC’s record for lowest

individual 36-hole score. Twenty strokes better than her personal best was enough to place her in the top 10.

“I was able to hit a lot more fairways and my short game really came around,” Haynes said. “I just played relaxed and was able to make some longer putts to save a lot of strokes around the green.”

Along with Haynes, Schuyler Wetzel, junior of Hot Springs, South Dakota, shot a 167. Junior of Wahoo, Emma Harris, recorded a 176. Freshman Karson Langley, of Sidney, also recorded a season best with a 181. Mikayla Gallagher, redshirt freshman of Lead, South Dakota, ended 36 holes

with a 185.

Metro State University dominated the field to bring home the gold, finishing four individuals in the top 10, with a total of 599. The closest team was CSU-Pueblo at 618. Pueblo’s Hee-Leina Kim, junior of Saipan, Mariana Islands, grabbed the individual championship with a 135. Kim set the RMAC Championship single-round record at 66, as well as the 2-round record at 135.

Western New Mexico earned third place just two strokes behind Pueblo. Black Hills State University edged CSC by one stroke to earn ninth place.

Professor of 28 years retires after forging a change Melanie Nelson Contributor Professor of Visual and Performing Arts professor Richard Bird is retiring after 28 years with CSC. The son of an Air Force Colonel, Bird grew up traveling the world. His father was originally from Kansas City, Kansas, which influenced his decision to attend the University of Kansas. His family was living in France at the time, so he made the trip back to the states alone.

Bird has received several notable awards for his personal artwork. He won the Overall Outstanding Artist/Craftsmen Award in Colorado in the early 1980s for a glass piece. He has also won Best Display at the Cottonwood Festival in Hastings. Many of his art pieces have been displayed in galleries.

Bird said he plans to stay in Chadron for a couple more years, as his wife is the Chadron Middle and High School art teacher. However, they eventually want to move to the Black Hills. Their two daughters now live in Chicago, and Loveland, Colorado.

By the time I was in high school, football became my life. Every minute was dedicated to what my team could accomplish. I have always believed in superstitions, especially when it came to football. Every night before a game, I would do the same thing. I’d eat the same dinner, pack my bag the exact same way, then watch the same movie, “Friday Night Lights.”

Released in 2004, “Friday Night Lights” follows the story of a small town high school football team, the Permian Panthers, an undersized underdog that the whole town is in love with. The team is on the back of all-star running back James “Boobie” Miles. In the first game of the season, Miles tears his ACL, ruining his season, and dramatically decreasing the team’s shot at a state title.

Another part of the movie that is incredibly accurate is the way the community acts towards the team. They celebrate wins, mourn losses, and are involved in every single thing.

Coming from a small town, I can assure you that the portrayal is accurate.

Little kids would practice the same plays, with their dads yelling at them, just like the coaches.

Signs would go up in yards, and the sidewalks would be painted by the booster club.

People live and breathe football in small towns, and “Friday Night Lights” shows that.

Even if you don’t like football, or movies about football, it can teach you something about life. Love your family. Family can be anyone, family can be anything you want it to be, but whatever you choose, love them.

Remember where you came from. Learn from your past, grow from it, but never forget the memories. Life is going to throw you down, and drag you around, but with the help of your family, friends, or team, you can get through anything.

Sharp imagery, vibrant colors, and an array of mediums gave guests a variety of art pieces to enjoy during Friday’s All Student Art Show Reception in Memorial Hall’s M a i n Gallery.

Artists, CSC faculty and staff, and guests filled Memorial Hall’s lobby and gallery for the reception and had the opportunity to discuss pieces.

Visual and performing arts professor and department chair Laura Bentz said there were 50-60 students who displayed work.

103 different pieces hung on the walls, from the ceiling, or rested on podiums around the gallery.

Joy Omelanuk, Academic Affairs Project Coordinator, judged the submissions. Vicki Lawler, senior of Worland, Wyoming, said that she enjoyed participating in a judged show, as it provided better submission experience.

“I like the fact that it’s like trying to get into a real show,” Lawler said.

The gallery’s lighting added to the individuality of each artist and their work. A calming effect from black and white images contrasted with the vibrant self-portraits and oil images.

Along with pictures, wire sculptures and stained glass rested on the floor or caught the light from the ceiling. Hanging stain glass pieces added a 3-D effect to the art show, with blown glass, pottery, batik, and ceramic works.

While walking through the show, soothing music played in the background and allowed the viewer to approach each piece with a neutral mood. This allowed each piece to bring different emotions out of the viewer and for him or her to connect with each individual artwork.

Patricia Moss, freshman of Chadron, had a few pieces on display; a ceramic, wire, and wood piece titled “Birds In Motion.” This display was put together with each of the five birds at a different angle, allowing the viewer to visualize movement. Another freshman, Courtney Lyon, of Grant, entered a graphite drawing titled “Stump,” that gave a 3-D effect of a tree stump. The use of lines and dark shadows allow this drawing to pop and gives the viewer an idea to reach out and feel the texture of an actual stump.

Other images such as the self-portraits gave each artist the opportunity to express their creativity and how they viewed him or herself.

The colors and details in each portrait allow the viewer a glimpse into the artist’s life.

“My self-portrait took me the longest to complete,” Heather Clark, sophomore of Spearfish, South Dakota, said. “It took me a little less than a month to finish.”

Clark submitted four pictures, all of which were accepted. Of those four her favorite was the linocut print of a hedgehog. This was Clark’s second CSC show, but she plans on re-entering the next two all student shows, her senior thesis art show, and an advanced art studio show in the next few years.

A hanging wire mobile, six stained glass designs, and textures from every piece add detail and expression to the art show and allow the pieces to come to life.

Some pieces that were in fact two-dimensional gave the effect of 3-D with textures and detail, keeping the viewer captivated throughout the show.

Relationships can overcome obstacles with sacrifice Megan O’Leary Account Executive

Calling all college ladies who love a good, sappy love story. “The Longest Ride” starring Scott Eastwood and Britt Robertson is now playing in theatres in Chadron. “The Longest Ride” is a movie based on the bestselling novel by the one and only Nicholas Sparks. The story centers around two different love stories that intertwine with one another across time.

Former bull riding champion Luke (Eastwood) and college student Sophia (Robertson) fall in love briefly after meeting each other at a rodeo. Despite their love for one another they are both heading down conflicting paths that test their relationship. Luke, after being badly injured in a bull riding accident, wants to continue to ride bulls and work on the ranch, and Sophia is planning on moving to Manhattan after graduation to work in an art gallery.

The couple have an unexpected encounter with a man named Ira Levinson. Ira is a man in his 90s who

is reaching the end of his life. During their time together throughout the movie Ira tells stories about his beloved wife, Ruth, and the love they shared for over 50 years. Ira tells the young couple about the things that he and Ruth both had to sacrifice in order for their relationship to work. These stories inspire Luke and Sophia to reflect on their own love and determine what their future together will hold.

“The Longest Ride” can relate to a lot of romantic relationships, but I feel like it particularly relates to most relationships in college as couples reach graduation. Like Luke and Sophia, couples come to the point where they need to make the decision to chase their own dreams, stick together, or make sacrifices for each other. It might be hard, but making sacrifices for the people that you love is worth it.

So, whether you are trying to figure out your own post-college relationship or are just looking for a good chick flick “The Longest Ride” serves as a great reminder of what it means to sacrifice for the ones we love.

As Ira Levinson says in the movie “Love requires sacrifice.”
