Student’s death ruled a suicide Jordyn Hulinsky & Sarah Townsend Managing Editor & News Editor The Jan. 31 death of Fatima Larios, 19, sophomore of Seaside, California, has been ruled a suicide after an extensive forensic investigation, according to an email from the Chadron Police Department. An email from Chief of Police Tim Lordino Friday evening stated that Larios’ death was the result of asphyxia due to hanging. ​ The determination was made after extensive interviews, analysis of evidence, autopsy and toxicological testing, the email stated.

Chadron Police Department, the Nebraska State Patrol, Western Pathology Consultants at Regional West Medical Center and the Dawes County Attorney/Coroner’s Office were all a part of the investigation, according to Lordino.

The Chadron Police Department found Larios in a High Rise dormitory at 2:30 a.m., Jan. 31. She was pronounced dead after police were called to the dorm.

Larios was a second baseman and an outfielder for CSC’s softball team. She was listed on the roster as No. 20.

On Feb. 3, amending an earlier statement, Dawes County Attorney and Coroner Vance Haug issued a second press release in connection with the death of Larios stated that “foul play and all other possibilities continue to be investigated.”

In an original press release issued Jan. 31, Haug said, “A preliminary investigation of the scene leads Vance Haug, the Dawes County Attorney and Coroner, to believe that foul play is not involved…”

The Feb. 3 press release stated, “A forensic autopsy has been completed and additional forensic testing continues to assist in the final determination of cause of death.”

Rodney Atkins to perform at CSC Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor Country Artist Rodney Atkins will come to Chadron State College at 7 p.m., April 24 as the final installment of the Galaxy Series. The concert will be in the NPAC. There are a limited number of tickets for sale but student tickets went on sale for CSC students and staff April 1.

Tickets for students are free when they are reserved with an EagleCard. Otherwise tickets are $20 presale and $25 at the

door. Tickets go on sale for the general public on April 8.

There will also be a country BBQ hosted at 5 p.m., April 24 by Creative Dining Services. The BBQ will also be free to students with a meal plan. For students who don’t have a meal plan, tickets for the meal will cost $10. It is suggested that when you reserve your concert tickets, you should reserve your meal ticket at the same time.

Closer to Home soup kitchen in need of volunteers The local soup kitchen, Closer to Home is in need of volunteers or groups of volunteers. Groups are counted as 3-4 people.

The kitchen is located at the Masonic Temple and is open weekdays from 11:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m.

Volunteers are expected to provide a meal for about 15-

25 people.

Some pantry and kitchen supplies are provided, but volunteers should expect to supply some as well.

Anyone interested in volunteering time or donating pantry items is urged to contact Kassie at 402-310-2046 for more information.

Senate plans campus beautification project Jaycie Cheatham Reporter Senator Nathaniel Jones and Lucinda Mays, CSC’s grounds supervisor, presented a plan to create a student plaza located outside of the Gold Room, which included planting a barrier of shrubs and trees to define the area.

Jones and Mays were allocated no more than $4,000 to get their campus beautification project started before the end of the semester.

Student Senate reported $44,443.25 in unallocated funds.

Vice President Taylor Strong is working on a project to potentially add a greenhouse on campus. Anyone interested in helping her out and continuing the development after she graduates should contact her at taylor.strong@eagles.csc. edu.

As part of the Activities Fee Board, Senator Katrina Hurley wanted to open up a discussion about the precedents that were set last year and what Senate believed would be most beneficial to the student body.

President Dillon Spies said that no matter what the AFB decides, they will have Senates full approval.

Jones was appointed to fill Senator Michael Halls’ position to sit in on the budget hearings to take place over the next two weeks.

Hall resigned because he just doesn’t have the time, he said.

CAB Chair Andy Martin requested $4,000 on behalf of the Hearts and Minds club’s sexual assault awareness walk.

Vice Chair of CAB Programming Chelsea Evans reported an issue with Bongo Ball scheduled on the afternoon of April 30, being that the company is already booked on that day. A decision will be made about whether to move the date or to switch to a new activity, such as extreme zip lining.

RLA will be holding an event called “Larping” on April 24. The event will be a Medieval/ Renaissance inspiring occasion featuring foam sword fights and a feast of turkey legs.

Retired FBI Special Agent captivates audience Ron Rawalt discusses the 1999 murder of 3-year-old Adam Gomez of Scottsbluff with students, faculty, community Teri Robinson Photo Editor The 1999 murder of 3-year-old Adam Gomez, of Scottsbluff, was Chadron State College alum and retired FBI Special Agent Ron Rawalt’s focus during his presentation last Thursday, hosted by the Justice Studies department.

Rawalt assisted on the case after the Scottsbluff Police Department asked for help with the investigation. After being informed of the details regarding the case, Rawalt immediately headed to Scottsbluff.

Gomez had been reported missing by his mother, Patricia Gomez. Patricia’s boyfriend at the time, Raymond Mata, was a main suspect in the disappearance of the child.

Rawalt detailed every hour of each day individually from when he received the phone call to assist in the investigation, until trials began for the suspect. Each piece of evidence and how the team came reached conclusions was also described, laying out the crime scene and investigation for the audience to understand.

Not only did evidence point the investigators to suspect Mata, but they had previous reason to believe he was capable of such a crime. Mata had been suspected of killing his cousin four years before Adam went missing, but lack of evidence to convict Mata allowed him to go free, according to Rawalt.

As Rawalt was giving details of the investigation, he reminded the audience he did not work on this case alone.

“I worked side-by-side with the cops,” Rawalt said.

Throughout the presentation, he said that in no way did he solve the case himself. The Scottsbluff Police Department solved the case, he just assisted.

After a few days of thorough investigation of Mata’s sister, Monica Mata’s house, law enforcement found the crime scene and discovered how Raymond committed the crime.

Once the investigation was finished, law enforcement had an “overwhelming amount of evidence” to convict Raymond on the kidnapping and murder of Adam, according to Rawalt.

A retrial for Raymond to be given the death penalty was in 2005, and before that the final trial on the case was in 2002 where

Raymond was initially found guilty and sentenced.

“The case lasted about a year and three-quarters to two years,” Rawalt said.

However, the investigation only lasted a few days from the initial report of Adam missing until trials began.

The Justice Studies department brought Rawalt to campus because “it’s an infamous Nebraska case that Ron worked on,” Associate Professor and Department Chair of Justice Studies Jamie Wada said. “And he’s a CSC alum.”

“George Watson (former department head) always talked about Ron, and Chief Lordino is good friends with Ron,” Wada said.

Chadron Chief of Police Jon Lordino contacted Rawalt for the Justice Studies department, they corresponded over the phone, and Rawalt was “gracious enough” to come speak, according to Wada.

Rawalt has presented this case many times before and hadn’t been back to CSC for a while; the presentation gave him a chance to visit.

Final Galaxy Series performer revealed Jaycie Cheatham Reporter Conferencing Coordinator Shellie Johns announced at the CAB meeting Tuesday that Rodney Atkins will be the country performer scheduled for 7 p.m., April 24 at the NPAC. Tickets are available for CSC students now. Tickets will be available to the general public after April 7.

There are only 1,500 tickets available so individuals were urged to act fast. Tickets are available at the Box Office in Memorial Hall.

Rick Koza asked students to get involved with this fall’s homecoming activities.

Homecoming is Oct. 10 against Adams State.

Students are being asked to develop potential themes and coordinating events for the week.

The bongo ball tournament scheduled in correlation with the Nearly Naked Mile on April 30 has been cancelled because the company is already committed to another event on that date.

The tournament is being moved to next semester’s Week of Welcome events.

The Native American club is planning a trip to Denver, April 10-12 to “explore cultures through an academic lens.”

The club wants to invite the public to attend an event at the Bean Broker to view their findings through their trip at 7 p.m., April 16.

CSC lowers Eagle Ridge costs Teri Robinson Photo Editor Students can now contract for a room in Eagle Ridge at the same price as a single dormitory room, with the exception of Edna Work Hall.

“I just talked to Dale Grant and we tried to bring the price in line with the other rooms on campus,” Sherri Simons, housing and resident life director, said.

The price change was also influenced to help attract more students to Eagle Ridge, according to Simons.

The price for a single dorm room, with the exception of Edna Work Hall, is $2,162 a semester. That rate is for the 2014-2015 academic school year, however the prices for next year have not yet been set, according to Simons.

Currently 38 rooms are filled in the Eagle Ridge Complex, of the 69 total rooms. Each building has 23 rooms, and each building has a room reserved for the resident adviser.

“Just got off to a rough start cause it wasn’t completed yet,” Simons said.

The complex was still adding the finishing touches when students began moving back in August 2014 for the school year.

“Anyone who wants to go look, we can arrange for them to see,” Simons said.

As of Tuesday, seven more students have contracted for a room in Eagle Ridge.

“Next fall should be much better,” Simons said.

Board of Trustees approves changes to 4 policies Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor Mikayla Gallagher, current Senator of Liberal Arts and CAB Vice Chair of Relations, was selected as the new CSC Student Trustee at the March 26 Board of Trustees Meeting. Current Student Trustee, Jacob Rissler, will end his term on May 1 and Gallagher will officially take over May 2.

Every year, the NCSC recognizes one faculty member from the System to receive the Teaching Excellence Award. The recognition includes a $3,000 cash award.

Each college nominates one candidate and the winner is chosen by the board and will be presented with the award at his/her college during the board meeting the following year. CSC’s nomination for this year is Jamie Wada, associates professor of justice studies.

The System Office and CSC approved an Interlocal Agreement with CSC and the City of Chadron. The agreement means that the city indoor pool will be annually rented to CSC for $189,000.

The college will pay the rent with student activity fees, revenue bond funds, and cash funds for instructional uses. The Board of Trustees minutes state, “A copy of the Interlocal Agreement will be provided to the board before the meeting.”

The System Office approved the additions to Policy 5014 that were brought up at the January meeting. The additions focus on faculty members accepting appointments to an Academic Dean position.

Tenured faculty can take a position of Academic Dean for a term of four years without losing

tenure or academic rank. After the four years, “tenure and rank shall be relinquished, and the right to return to a faculty position shall terminate.” Nontenured faculty and those who are hired from outside the college can take an Academic Dean position but they will not have rank, tenure, or “… the right to a future position in the faculty…”

The Board of Trustees also approved changes to four policies related to sexual orientation and gender identity. Policy 2700 and 5000 will now include “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” as part of the equal opportunity descriptions.

Gov. should stay out of business

I

t has long been said, “The government that governs least governs best.”

That quote has been attributed to both Thomas Jefferson and Henry David Thoreau, but the idea behind those words is one that resonates with the American mentality. We value our freedoms.

We love the freedoms our Nation enjoys, and we are rightfully wary of any and all government attempts to dig into our personal and private affairs.

Nowhere else is that truth evident than in the First Amendment of the constitution; powerful words that grant us the right to worship as we please, speak as we wish, and peacefully assemble where we will.

So the question becomes this: if we don’t want the government in our lives and we value the freedom to make our own decisions, why do some state’s lawmakers feel the need to pass separate “Religious Freedom” laws?

The First Amendment already grants you the freedom to worship, but it also contains an establishment clause which states in quite clear language that there should be no preferential treatment of one religion over another.

If you wish to practice your religion, you are free to do so. However, in the event that you want to run a business in the public square, you will likely encounter others who do not share your faith. The establishment clause levels the field and considers both your beliefs as equal. A good business owner would treat their customers with equity, and the ideal would be that government should not step in and dictate that treatment.

But on the other side of the argument, inequitable businesses shouldn’t receive patronage based on the belief that they should be free to discriminate for any reason.

That brand of hatred is simply bad for business, something Indiana is learning the hard way in the fallout of Gov. Mike Pence signing the State’s Religious Freedom Act into law.

It is our opinion that the government should stay out of business and not make laws that sanction private business practices.

F

or more than 50 years, the relationship between Cuba and the United States has been scarred by the embargo levied in 1960.

Because of the embargo, Cubans have faced hardships many Americans would consider unbearable. Strong feelings about these past events have since simmered and the restrictions on trade have loosened some. But change finally came in 2014 with discussions between presidents Barrack Obama and Raul Castro so that Cuban citizens can progress from their poor living conditions. Americans and Cubans need to restore trade and end these Cold War ideals.

Cubans neither hate nor fear Americans, but rather welcome them. From many conversations I had with Cuban people, I have since discovered Cubans want to rebuild a relationship with the United States. One of the most economically stable countries in the world is only 100 miles from their border. The only way to rebuild this relationship is by letting the people of both nations communicate without fear. Cubans want only what every normal human want’s: to better their lives from what they have.

The embargo has greatly affected the Cuban people, but it wasn’t until the Soviet Union fell that Cuba began to face harsh times. In Cuba’s capital, Havana, buildings built by United States companies in the early 20th century are falling apart, and people

are trying to live in these buildings as they crumble. Although homelessness is illegal in Cuba, trying to provide necessary living conditions for the Cuban people has been a difficult task because of the amount of work needed to fix the buildings.

Cubans live a different form of poverty. Homes and food are provided by the government, and Cubans have enough, but it’s not much by comparison. Every Cuban has a legal right to a house, food, and medical care, but wages vary between 18 pesos and 30 pesos per month ($20 to $33). Ten pounds of rice per month are provided for one person in a house. With such a small amount, portions have to be extremely small in order to make the food last as long as possible. Buying other food items, tooth pastes, soap, toilet paper and other hygiene luxuries are too expensive. Cubans often rely on tourist donations for some of these hygiene essentials.

This is a new market for the United States. Millions of people in Cuba do not have access to many products that are related to United States trade. Organizations like the World Trade Organization, the EU, and the UN along-

side with several big trading powers in the world like China have sided with the U.S. as proof of allegiance. This allegiance is based off Cold War ties and has since faded with the years. The Cuban people are wanting the market to come, they want material things that have been deprived from for so long. What harm does it do when we already trade with China, a country that already represses its people? Perhaps trade might decrease the harsh treatment.

Some elements of capitalism can be seen in Cuba. Cuba is a Socialist State where the government owns most of the businesses. However, since the Soviet Union fell, Cuba needs money to fund its massive socialist agenda.

They’ve since opened a few private institutions where individuals can make money on their own. These small businesses are not like those in America because heavy taxes are implemented to prevent people from getting ahead.

Although the number of businesses is small, the Cuban government has opened the door to capitalism and left the people wanting more.

I experienced all these things first hand last December with ten other CSC students. I have since studied diligently trying to make sense of what I saw in Cuba. I’ve come to the understanding that these Cold War ties need to be cut. Older Cuban-Americans need to stop with their hatred of expulsion in the late 20th century and move on. Times have changed and the Cuban government is slowly changing as well. Why not support this change?

Make your opinion known to your political leaders. Let’s end the embargo.

Outrage over Sen.’s remarks is misplaced Sure, State Senator Ernie Chambers’ remarks where incendiary, but we are all missing the point Spike Jordan Opinion Editor

N

ebraska State senator Ernie Chambers of Omaha created a firestorm after controversial statements he made during last week’s hearing on a bill that would allow concealed carry permit holders to have firearms in bars and establishments that serve liquor.

Chambers, a 77-year-old Independent and 40-year veteran of the Nebraska Unicameral, made statements that compared the police to ISIS. “My ISIS is the police. Nobody from ISIS ever terrorized us as a people as the police do us daily. And they get away with it,” Chambers said.

His rhetoric, while extremely hyperbolic, isn’t necessarily original. If you follow any right-wing Facebook pages, you’ve probably seen the meme of a Ferguson, Missouri, protestor wearing a shirt with the slogan “ISIS terrorizes us less than the Ferguson PD” printed on the front. The shirt is tacky, but if you break the cardinal rule of the internet and read the comments below the photo, you’ll notice the stream of comments that mock the shirt-wearer’s intelligence, followed by atrocious racist jokes and sincerely butt-hurt white people who’ve completely missed the point.

I’ve become desensitized to right-wing reactionary outrage, so Chambers’ comments are far from upsetting to me; my jimmies remain un-rustled. The way I see it: the

slogan and the language used are meant to be as provocative as possible. He was outrageous on purpose because people weren’t listening to the arguments he was providing.

In communities where excessive harassment occurs, people who complain about having their rights repeatedly violated by the police are systematically silenced, marginalized, and ignored.

The police are meant to protect citizens, not kill them over petty offenses (there -Ernie Chambers is a separate Nebraska State Sen. of Omaha essay I could write distinguishing the difference between “policing” and “law-enforcement,” but that will have to wait for a later date). When reasonable complaints go unanswered, I can hardly blame someone from taking a more bombastic approach.

I served in the Marines, so in my eyes the over-inflated rhetoric Chambers used is on the level with an angry hippie calling me a “baby-killer” and accusing me of murdering civilians overseas. Comments like that are hurtful, and while they make me feel bad, I’ve got thick skin and I’m not going to get

upset about it. People are free to say what they want, and I fought for my country to defend their right to say it.

So, while the comparison Chambers made was out of place, his root argument is not. I am conservative enough to believe that most police officers are there to do their jobs and protect the public, but that doesn’t excuse the fact that the Department of Justice probe into the Ferguson Police Department found how police have abused their power. There are police who profile and harass citizens based on their race. The law enforcement profession is not immune to criticism any more than the military, and the people asking for Chambers to step down seem to want to ignore the problem.

What bothers me is that there’s no outrage from the right-wing when police shoot an unarmed civilian. I don’t think you can argue that a police officer is justified in killing someone for jaywalking or selling a loose cigarette. I don’t think those are crimes warranting a summary execution.

But here is the thing that I’m thinking about: Everyone wants to criticize Chambers for the sound-bite that’s being circulated, but no one wants to acknowledge the context of the commentary Chambers offered at the opening of the hearing, specifically when State Senator Tommy Garrett of Nebraska’s third legislative district, gave his comments arguing for a particular amendment.

Garrett introduced the conceal carry bill with an amendment that said police should be allowed to conceal carry on school grounds while off duty. Garrett said the idea for the amendment came from a discussion with a Nebraska State Trooper who wanted to be able to concealed-carry on school property while attending his child’s sporting events. In Nebraska, if you are caught with a weapon on school grounds, you will have your weapon confiscated; you will be detained by police, and charged with a felony.

“When I see the way the cops in Omaha kill people and get away with it, I don’t want them carrying guns on school grounds where there are children,” Chambers said.

“If a woman has a knife, and she has thrown the knife, then they shoot her. That with which she could hurt them, she no longer has. So it’s like shooting somebody fish in a barrel, and they’re cleared.

Chambers, an Army Veteran, then asked Garrett, an Air Force Vet, why on military bases in the United States, there are places such as Mess Halls and the Base Exchange, where trained service members are not allowed to carry their issued firearms. Service members, who receive far more training than the 8-hours required under Nebraska’s concealed carry law, are prohibited from open-carrying their issued weapon into certain facilities on base. So what exactly entitles the Police to preferential treatment?

Chambers was asking Garrett to provide more justification and a stronger argument in favor of the amendment. The discussion continued, and Garrett continued providing facile arguments in-favor of letting police carry concealed on school grounds.

I’m believe in the second amendment, and I support our police. But I think we need to ignore the ISIS comments, because Chambers asked a valid question: Why aren’t police held accountable for shootings, excessive force, and outright brutality?

For the people asking for Chamber’s to apologize and resign, I strongly feel you need to first; grow a thicker skin; next, take a step off your high-horse, and finally; answer this question. What makes police so damn special?

Those students that are further along with their colts have begun riding them, and working on techniques with them, but some students who are working with younger or more belligerent horses are still working from the ground.

Students have the option of bringing their own horse to train, or if they are unable to bring a horse, then Head Rodeo Coach Dustin Luper, the instructor of the class, provides them with a horse that they can work with.

“When I first started I had a beginner horse that was a little trained so that I could become more confident, but now I have a harder colt to work with,” Laurie Le Pape, 19, freshman of Paris, said. “I got my horse two weeks ago. She was never worked with, but since she is an older colt, 6 years old, she learns really fast. Monday, I saddled her for the first time after just four times of working with her. She gets bored because her mind works faster, so I have to find games to occupy her. I make her jump, and I am trying to make her learn to walk through tires.”

The class is in the newly constructed Rangeland Agriculture

Center & Pavilion, which was opened in 2013. Phase II of the construction project is scheduled to open in Fall 2015.

“I think that since there is an equine program it is really important to have somewhere that students can bring their horses to work with them,” Le Pape said. “I think it is cool that even though I am a communications major that the college gives me the opportunity to work with horses and have a minor in equine management because it has been my passion since I was little.”

Luper said that the building is used for the equine communication class, and the rodeo team uses it for practices each night.

CSC moves to 8-12 RMAC, 8-24 overall Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor The Eagles’ softball team scored 38 runs in four weekend games against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

CSC won the first game Saturday, 11-3, scoring in every inning except the first. Jessica Eatmon, senior outfielder of Broomfield, Colorado, scored three runs in the game. Shea Graham, junior outfielder of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Taylor Bauer, sophomore of Rapid City, South Dakota, each hit a home run. Tayler Hall, junior of Windsor, Colorado, sent 10 to the dugouts on strikeouts.

In a close second game, CSC lost 11-10. Going into a tied seventh inning, Katelyn Kruger, junior of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, smashed a solo home run to right field, but in the bottom of the inning, a two RBI single from Stephanie Warhoe, freshman of Colorado Springs, Colorado, brought the Mountain Lions home with the win.

Kruger marked three home runs and four RBIs in the game. Cierra Cosslette, junior of Grand Junction, Colorado, tallied five strikeouts in the game. Bauer also hit one over the fence in the contest.

“I think that we really came together as a team this past weekend,” Kruger said. “We were really focused and motivated and I think we will use that momentum and take it in to this weekend’s games against Regis.”

Sunday, in game three of the stretch, the Eagles clawed their way to the win, 6-2. Hall allowed four hits, while striking out eight.

Casey Polk, senior of Golden, Colorado; Zoe Humphries, sophomore of Arvada, Colorado; Graham; and Bauer all took one over the fence.

In the final game, UCCS fought back to post the win 14-11.

Humphries batted in three runners while hitting two home runs.

Kruger and Eatmon also each knocked a home run.

The Eagles will return home Friday and Saturday for another four-game stand against Regis University, Denver. Games will be played at noon and 2 p.m., Friday, and at 11 a.m., and 1 p.m., Saturday.

Kapukotuwa won both the shot put and the discus last weekend at Black Hills State University. He led the way in discus with a throw of 168-4 3/4. He now owns the third best mark in CSC school history. In the shot put, Kapukotuwa threw a 53 1/4, beating teammate Kyle McCarthy, of Aurora, by just .23 meters.

Kruger showed off her offensive talents last weekend against University of ColoradoColorado Springs. In 12 at bats, she recorded six hits, four of which were home runs and five RBIs. Kruger hit three bombs in one of Saturday’s games. She is currently hitting .324 on the season with only eight strikeouts.

Cowboys capture 1st in Wyoming Golf team bogeys at UNK Janelle Kesterson Lifestyles Editor This weekend the Chadron State rodeo team traveled to Torrington, Wyoming, and the men’s team rode away with their second consecutive team title.

The Chadron State men’s team now has 2,715 points, 25 more than Gillette College, which is enough to bump them into the leading spot in the Central Rocky Mountain Region with only three rodeos remaining in the season.

The team scored 465 points at Torrington. They failed to finish any cowboys in first place, but three cowboys earned a second place finish.

One of them, steer wrestler Lane Day, senior of Bartlett, earned second in both go-rounds with times of 6.1 and 5.6 which was enough to earn him runner-up honors in the average.

“I was pretty happy with how the steer wrestling went,” Day said. “I have been riding (teammate) Taz Olson’s good horse, Amiga, and she worked great making my job rather easy. Placing second is always a little bittersweet, but I’m grateful I was fortunate enough to place and help my team out.”

The other second place finishes came from Wyatt

Clark, graduate student of Wellfleet, who competed in bareback riding with scores of 81 and 69 points; and Chasen Cole, freshman of Hermosa, South Dakota, who competed in the bull riding.

Cole tied for first place in the first go-round with a score of 73, but was thrown off in the second go-round.

However, all of the other cowboys except Chance Engelbert, of Laramie County Community College, were thrown too, so Cole kept his place in the average.

CSC also had three cowboys that earned fifth place finishes. Prestyn Novak, freshman of Newell, South Dakota, in the tie-down roping; Nate McFadden, senior of Elsmere, in the bareback riding; and Jedd Rice, sophomore of Boise, Idaho, in the saddle bronc riding.

Jeff Cover, senior of Ashby, was sixth in the saddle bronc riding, and Clark finished seventh in the team roping.

For the women’s team, Amy Deichert, senior of Spearfish, South Dakota, placed in two events. She finished fourth in barrel racing and sixth in the goat tying.

Abbie Frey, junior of Crawfordville, Indiana, finished fifth in goat tying and Kadi McFadden, junior of Elsmere, finished fifth in breakaway roping.

The next CSC rodeo action will take place at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, April 10-12.

Preston Goehring Distribution Manager The Chadron State women’s golf team traveled to the University of Nebraska-Kearney for the Spring Invite, Monday and Tuesday.

Juniors Schuyler Wetzel, of Hot Springs, South Dakota, and Emma Harris, of Wahoo, shot the team’s best scores. Wetzel shot an 83 in the first 18 holes, and an 88 in the second half for a total of 171. Harris improved on a first round 89 with an 82 in the second, also finishing with 171.

“On Monday the wind was insane,” Harris said. “It made holes impossible to reach in regulation, and even with a solid hit you never knew how much the wind was going to affect each shot. Tuesday

was perfect golfing weather with hardly any wind, which made the course incredibly shorter.”

UNK won its home tournament with a total of 633 strokes.

Samantha Crawford, of South Jordan, Utah, earned the individual championship for the Lopers with a score of 152. CSC finished the two-day tournament in last place out of eight teams.

Redshirt freshman Mikayla Gallagher, of Lead, South Dakota, aided the Eagles’ efforts with a 187, while Karson Langley, freshman of Sidney, shot a 186. Kelli Haynes, freshman of Whitney, and Danielle Brennan, sophomore of Ellsworth, finished with a 189 and 201, respectively.

CSC will return to action Tuesday and Wednesday, at South Dakota School of Mines.

Track stars shine at 1st outdoor meets Christopher Smith Reporter Chadron State men’s and women’s track teams split this past weekend with half taking the trip to Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado, and the other half traveling to Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota; setting six national provisional marks and three school records.

The CSC women’s team performed well in its outdoor season opener setting four provisional marks and breaking three school records. Junior Shelby Bozner, of Rock Springs, Wyoming, led the way for the Eagles winning the 100 meter hurdles and breaking the school record in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:02.16. She broke the record by 12 hundredths of a second.

Sophomore Stachia Reuwsaat, of Black Hawk, South Dakota, won the long jump with a mark of 19 feet, 9 inches. Freshman of Brighton, Colorado, Katelyn Ellis won the high jump leaping 5-7 1/4. Mel Herl, junior thrower of Eaton, Colorado, hit a provisional mark winning the women’s discus throwing 151-2 3/4. She also won the shot put with a mark of 42 feet.

Junior sprinter of Kingston, Jamaica, Tiffany Thomas set the school record in the 400 dash with a time of 56.60 clocking in half a second faster than alumni Monique Fair, of Denver, the previous record holder.

At BHSU, Jayme Nunes, a senior of Alliance, won the 5,000 dash with a time of 19:26.38.

For the CSC men the senior AllAmerican Charith Kapukotuwa, of Chilaw, Sri Lanka, led the way win-

ning both of his throwing events in discus and shot put. His discus mark was 168-4 3/4 a personal best and the third best in CSC history. Kapukotuwa also won shot put with a mark of 53 1/4. Senior thrower Kyle McCarthy, of Aurora, placed second while junior Tanner Rien, of Mitchell, finished third.

Junior sprinter Martin Moriel, of Phoenix, was a double winner in the 200 and 400 with times of 21.79 and 48.50, respectively.

At BHSU, All-American freshman Damarcus Simpson of Lafayette, Georgia, won the long jump leaping 23-5 1/2. Sophomore Cody Davis, of Fort Morgan, Colorado, won the 800 with a time of 1:59.45.

CSC’s next meet will be April 11, where they will travel to Rapid City, South Dakota, to participate in the South Dakota School of Mines Bauer Invite.

‘Whiplash’ marches to the beat of its own drum

Jaycie Cheatham Contributor “Whiplash” is a drama about college student and aspiring jazz drummer Andrew Neyman and the diabolical battle he fights with his very intense instructor, Terence Fletcher. Neyman endures the abuse because he wants to be “one of the greats” and he knows that Fletcher will get him there, but the harsh hoops that he is forced to jump through are almost unbearable to watch.

Actor Miles Teller, who has been performing on the drums since he was 16 years old, plays Andrew Neyman and grapples with some of the scenes in this film due to his own near-fatal experience in 2007. Teller practiced for his role in the movie almost as much as Neyman practices to impress Fletcher.

Fletcher is played by J.K. Simmons who won an Oscar for his role in the film. Fletcher toys with his students’ psyches, pushing them to the point of risking their lives in order to earn a spot in his cutthroat band.

Writer and Director Damien Chazelle really exemplifies the tensions throughout the film with his spasmodic camera shifts and his focus on grisly images like Neyman’s blood, sweat, and tears, dripping off of the cymbals.

True to its title, “Whiplash” jerks the audience back and forth. Fletcher seems understanding and maybe even sensitive at times, and then he quickly morphs into a sardonic tyrant. His mood swings also jolt the characters in the film, and you can’t help but wonder why they put up with Fletcher. We root for Neyman because he seems like the first student that will stand up to Fletcher and end his reign of terror, but at the same time we want him to simply leave and succeed in a less severe setting.

“Whiplash” really demands the audience to ask themselves what a person should be willing to sacrifice in order to make his/her dreams a reality.

Fletcher is always condemning his students for not playing to his tempo, which is symptomatic for all aspects of life. Not everyone plays to the same tempo, but that doesn’t mean that one person’s rhythm is more significant than another. The reality is that we all have hoops to jump through in order to succeed and there are always people out there that will push us too far. How we perform until the curtain closes is what defines us as “one of the greats.”

This dynamic film has won three Oscars with another 75 wins and over 80 award nominations making it a “must see” on everyone’s watch list.

A mixture of aromas from dishes such as Chinese dumplings, Oliv’Ye Salad, and enchiladas filled the Scottsbluff room and Ballroom Saturday during the 38 annual International Food Tasting Party.

Along with dishes from cultures around the world, there were games of bingo, a silent auction, and entertainment from different cultures that occurred throughout the night. Cultures such as China, Ethiopia, Japan, Russia, Thailand, and many more were represented in some form during the night.

After 320 Chadron State College students and community members piled their plates with dishes and settled into their seats, an American tap dance consisting of international students and Chadron community tap dancers, took the stage and began the entertainment portion.

Dancers from Ethiopia, Job Corps, and China, along with alumni dancers with Luau Polynesia, portrayed their culture through dance. CSC alum Christine Seumanutafa-Collins and dance partner Kiri Close performed at the International Food Tasting Party as part of their dance club Luau Polynesia.

Songs from the United States, Thailand, Japan, Job Corps, and China were performed, along with a saxophone performance, Japan Tea Ceremony, and a guitar performance from Curacao also entertained the audience.

The International Club consists of international and American students. There are 58 International students enrolled for the 2014-2015 academic year.

Students began preparing the dishes Saturday morning and served, performed, and organized the entire event for the public.
