CSC holds suicide prevention workshop

Hope helps prevent suicide.

That was a main point Davina Fessler, human services health manager with Western Community Health Resources and CSC senior of Chadron, made during the Suicide Prevention Workshop Friday morning.

Fessler focused on the signs of a suicidal person, how to approach the situation, how to handle the person and the situation, and what to do after. She began with statistics and some causes as to why people may become suicidal or have suicidal thoughts.

A few statistics presented were that in 2012 Wyoming had the highest suicide rate, there are 25 attempted suicides for every documented suicidal death, and males are four times more likely to attempt suicide.

Next, Fessler went over factors that may heighten someone’s suicidal thoughts, such as biological reasons, age, grade level, etc.; psychological drugs and alcohol, and the surrounding environment season of the year. Other factors include but are not limited to relationship problems, losing a job, etc. She also listed a few ways—poison, guns, or overdosing—to carry out a suicide.

According to Fessler, the peak of stress is when people are most likely to attempt suicide. When someone close to the person who is stressed or suicidal, steps in to help with tasks such as studying for finals, loaning money for financial problems, or other reasons, lowers the stress of the person and can help prevent suicide.

After going over some of the basics, Fessler got in to the detail of approaching the person, talking with them, and helping them. The main point she used to explain these steps were QPR—Question, Persuade, Refer.

“You want to give them hope,” Fessler said.

Suicidal people tend to believe they are alone, according to Fessler. While going through the steps Fes-

sler also used her experience with suicidal thoughts to give examples and more insight into how the steps work.

An important aspect to spotting someone who is thinking about suicide is to really know the person and his or her attitude and mood. Someone who is contemplating suicide will have a drastic change in his or her mood.

“Knowing the person is important,” Fessler said.

A person will begin to act different and drastically change their perspectives.

If you notice that someone close to you is down or has drastic mood changes and you believe they may be considering suicide, there are tips about approaching the person and situation.

If you are in doubt, don’t wait, ask about it, catch the person as they are going up their peak of stress—before they reach the top, allow the person to open up and speak freely on his or her own will, do it in a private setting, have resources available when you go speak with them, and listen to the person.

Adding her own personal experience, self-harm is a warning sign before someone commits suicide, according to Fessler.

“Cutting is an addiction and gets worse as it goes,” Fessler said. “It can be an outlet or cry for help depending on the person.”

Adding, Fessler went on to explain how a person should approach the suicidal individual by using the direct approach. Always be inviting and allow the person to open up,

never ask if the person is feeling suicidal in a negative way, such as “You aren’t suicidal, are you?”

As the person trying to help, you must persuade by listening to the problem.

“Suicide is not the problem,” Fessler said.

Never rush to judge the person but offer hope allowing that person to realize he or she is not alone, according to Fessler.

Then, refer that person to the appropriate resources or take him or her to a counselor.

Also, be sure to make yourself available for that person to either talk or go with them to speak with an appropriate person.

The main thought Fessler wanted the audience to know was that giving the person hope is important to

helping him or her.

Students attended the workshop for classes but still gained the resources to help someone suffering from suicidal thoughts.

Kate Chesterman, 19, freshman of Bertrand, went for extra credit in a class but left with more knowledge on the subject.

“The thing that stuck with me the most is that people who are thinking about committing suicide do a last cry for help before they do actually commit suicide,” Chesterman said, “and more people don’t hear their last cry for help.”

Chesterman added that she feels prepared for dealing with someone who suffers from suicidal thoughts and helped her to realize the steps to take.

Senate swears in new 2015-16 Allocations for Club Funding VP; allocates club funds Jaycie Cheatham Reporter Chief Justice Coy Clark swore in Karson Langley as the new Senate Vice President. “I hope Senate treats you better than it treated me,” said former Vice President Taylor strong as Langley took office.

Syerra Wycoff-Bagshaw was also sworn in as a senator-at-large due to her absence at last week’s meeting.

President Katrina Hurley met with Vice President of Administration and Finance Dale Grant and was assured that Senate has more than enough funds to allocate the AFB’s recommended club funds.

The unspecified amount includes the rollover money from this year and the reserve money.

At the beginning of next year, Hurley wants to create a Finance Committee to make decisions on how much money should be put in reserve for rollover each year.

Other stand-in committees suggested for next year are a Campus Beautification Committee, a Dormitory Representative Committee, the AFB Committee, and the AFB Review Committee.

The $154,015 for club allocations was approved.

The Homecoming theme for next year will be “Open Season: Going on a Bear Hunt.” The next item of business is to determine different activities for each day and dress-up days. The formal dance and costume dance need to be scheduled for Thursday evening and the other for Saturday evening depending on which one students would prefer for the coronation.

CAB Chair Andy Martin announced that the movies playing for the Saturday’s movie night will be “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Unfriended,” and “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2.”

Laure Sinn requested $200 for the Platinum Eagle Awards, awarded to the male and female voted with the highest honor of the graduating class. The awards will be present at the Ivy Day ceremony May 8.

Senator Josh Mayer announced that he will be working on getting a language learning program at CSC through Rosetta Stone or another program for students to receive credit.

Stephanie Steele was sworn in as the new CAB chair.

Steele suggested that CAB allocate $500 and then Senate could allocate an additional $3,000 for CAB to purchase an inflatable outdoor screen which comes with its own projector and sound system for all clubs to use for outdoor events. The screen is 18 feet wide and has a Bluray player.

Hurley does not want Senate to rush spending large sums from now on so senators can wait one week to deliberate and bring the proposed allocations to their constituents.

Hurley also wants Senate to convene during the Week of Welcome and freshman orientation. She also recommends that Senate have a booth at the club fair to get their name out there and get more participants for next year.

Hearts and Minds is holding a drive-in style movie event 7:30 p.m., Friday. Everyone from the community is welcome.

“The Burning Bed” and “Taken” will be playing in the parking lot near the softball field. “Despicable Me” and “Big Hero 6” will be playing in the amphitheater area. $100 was allocated for the yearend Senate BBQ 5 p.m., Monday.

All senators new and old are welcome as well as a plus-one guest.

Aftershock ripples through CSC CAB swears in new officers Melanie Nelson Reporter

“Mom! Mom! Mom, can you hear me?” No reply.

Desperate to get a call through to his family, Nabin Shrestha, 23, junior of Kathmandu, Nepal, had finally reached his mother. She uttered two words, “Babu (Nepalese for “son”), earthquake,” and the call was lost before she could hear her son’s response.

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal at 11 a.m., Saturday. Nepal is 12 hours ahead of Mountain Standard Time, so it was 11 p.m. MDT, Friday. Shrestha was in bed, recovering from an illness, and woke up to the news at 10 a.m., Saturday. He used Viber, a messaging app, and Skype to try to contact his family.

An hour after his call with his mother cut out, he reached his family again. “Don’t worry we are safe,” his mother said. In the midst of that sentence, she was experiencing an aftershock. One side of their house was unstable, so Shrestha’s parents and grandmother all moved to the room on the other side which had been reconstructed. His sister, 26, went to stay at the neighbor’s house. His whole family is currently sharing the food, water, and electricity at the neighbors’. Shrestha said the electricity comes and goes, and they usually only get 3-5 hours per day.

All of Shrestha’s friends and family are okay. However, as of 7:45 p.m., Wednesday, the death toll had reached 5,200. It is expected to exceed 10,000 in the days to come, as many people are still trapped in the village.

It spurred an avalanche on Mt. Everest, killing 17 climbers and injuring at least 37 others, according to the New York Times.

Basnet also has family and a house of his own back in Nepal. His story is similar to Shrestha’s. He woke up at 6:15, Saturday morning to missed calls from his nephew in Kathmandu, but could not get a return call through.

He then turned on the TV and heard the terrible news.

He finally contacted his nephew at 8 a.m. and found out that all of his family is okay. His own house did suffer some damage however.

Help from other countries is trying to reach those in need, but Shrestha said that the Nepalese government is complicating the recovery process. The money doesn’t seem to be reaching the victims. Aid from Taiwan was denied due to political conflicts. Shrestha said the people are upset, because they want to trust the government, yet they are not receiving the help they desperately need.

The worst earthquake Nepal has seen in 80 years has already cost so many lives, but it doesn’t stop there.

Many of Nepal’s historical temples and buildings were destroyed. According to USA Today, UNESCO World Heritage Site, Dharahara Tower, which was built in the 1800s, crumbled to pieces. Basantapur Durbar Square, home to the royal family up until the 19th century, was demolished.

“Nepal will never ever be the same country,” Basnet said. “This tragedy will last for generations after generations.” He said that tourism is a big part of Nepal’s economy. The destruction of so many buildings will take a toll on that industry.

As finals week approaches, Shrestha has more to worry about than just tests.

“I feel helpless,” he said, “I would love to go back and help my neighbors and those who are in pain.”

Instead, he prays with his “om” pendant for the safety and recovery of his country.

CSC student reaches for the stars Collin Brook Reporter

This summer, Joslynn VanDerslice, junior of Columbus, will be working at an internship for NASA. She was recommended for the position by her adviser, Michael Leite, and will start on June 15 in California.

The project title is “Mars 2020 Geo-Analogs,” so named because the research she will be doing is work for probes that will be sent to Mars in the year 2020.

VanDerslice’s mission will be to find rocks (on Earth) that will be used to test the sampling tools on Mars rovers. The Mars probes have small tools like drills, scoops, and sampling arms. They have to be as strong and light as possible because of the huge risks associated with sending them to another planet and being unable to fix them if they break.

VanDerslice showed a knack for this type of job during an assignment where she investigated potential Mars-like rocks in Wyoming. She was searching for volcanic greywacke in the Leucite Hills region, north of Rock Springs. That experience led to a recommendation to apply for the internship, which she then accepted. She was also chosen because of her clear writing style and mastery of class research topics.

“I am pretty excited, although I have no idea what to expect from the internship,” VanDerslice said. “I think it will be exciting and I will probably learn a lot.

I have also never been to California before so that is exciting too.”

The project is huge; VanDerslice says there will be roughly 200 interns starting with her when she begins working in June.

CAB would like to purchase an inflatable outdoor screen which comes with its own projector and sound system for all clubs to use for outdoor events. The screen is 18 feet wide, has a Blu-ray player, and costs approximately $3,500.

CAB allocated $1,000 for the screen.

CAB allocated $1,500 for the last free movie night and $2,000 for the last free bowling night of the semester. The movies playing for Sunday’s movie night will be “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Unfriended,” and “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2.” The Luau themed free bowling night is Saturday. EDITORIAL–THE EAGLE’S VIEW

Sacrifice something

S

pring is the season for volunteering and it took a lot for students, faculty, and community members to sacrifice their time and effort in support of The Big Event.

This time of year is especially difficult; we’re stressed to the last threads of our tolerance, and the reprieve of summer is too tempting. We want to thank all those who made a strong show and put their best foot forward for Chadron State and the community.

While a great effort was put forth by the approximately 600 Chadron State students who did volunteer for The Big Event, there were even more students that did not make themselves present.

It is understandable if students had work or family to tend to, or other prior engagements, but there were some students who failed to make an appearance with a sole excuse of laziness.

Saturday was also a time of tragedy in the East.

A magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck Nepal, a tiny country between India and China. As of Wednesday, the BBC reports that 8 million people are displaced, 10,000 injured, and as many as 5,000 dead in one of the worst earthquakes the region has seen in 80 years.

It may seem like a great sacrifice to spend a nice Saturday helping others, but it may be time to re-evaluate. Nepal’s primary source of income is tourism, and the people there will be struggling to recover the loss of their cultural landmarks and heritage. While some students were sitting in their rooms or running around to social events, the people of Nepal are still going through a tremendous hardship.

So no matter what you have going on in your life right now, your concerns are miniscule compared to what others are facing. It shouldn’t just be large coordinated events that encourage you to give something of yourself; to forgo selfishness and contribute something that alleviates the suffering and hardships of others.

Service is always a ‘Big Event’ Hannah Clark Web Editor This is about my experience with The Big Event Group 22. I ran into Group 22 in front of Chadron High School, as they grappled with piles of mulch. I was covering the day of volunteerism for The Eagle newspaper, visiting jobs sites and live-tweeting. When I stopped by, Group 22 had their work cut out for them. The job site, a deceptively small piece of landscaping, was dotted with miniature conifers. The volunteers were trying to spread dark mulch over the landscaping fabric. Gamely, they clawed with narrow rakes at the piles of mulch, or rather the dried and twisted roots.

The mulch stayed put. The branches’ natural weave formed a huge, tangled mass. Yet, the volunteers worked on.

Group 22 started the day at a disadvantage. Although organizers assigned 14 people to the job, only five showed up. Three of them stayed at Group 22’s original location: the Ridgeview Church Job-site. The other two, Haley Alvarado, sophomore of Alliance, and Athena Tarin, freshman of Lyman, followed site leader David Nesheim to the school.

Nesheim also brought his 8-year-old son, Myles. When I arrived to take photos, Myles climbed on top of the mulch pile and attacked it with his shovel. The shovel didn’t even penetrate the Gordian Knot of twigs, but he still struck a pose and said he was king of the mulch mountain. Alongside him, Alvarado and Tarin worked in the afternoon sun. After I took photos, I left the intrepid four to tackle the unmovable mulch. I felt guilty, since my job involved tweeting

and there’s, mulching, but I shrugged it off and left to tour more of The Big Event.

After I documented as many volunteers as I could find, I drove back down 10th street. I passed Chadron High School and saw Group 22 still fighting the mulch. I noticed that in two hours, they hadn’t progressed much. My phone vibrated. My friend had just invited me to sushi. I imagined the sweet asian goodness, but then looked back at the perspiring volunteers. I pulled over.

When I rejoined them, Tom Smith, who had lead a different work site, was now working with the team. His daughter Jackson, age 10, had seen Group 22 as Smith drove her home from their own site. She noticed the huge mulch pile and told her father they had to help. “[She] has been curious about volunteer work,” Smith said, “Hence, The Big Event was a good way for her to volunteer and also be part of a team.”

The team, now two-and-a-half members stronger, pressed on. The landscaping area, although small, seemed very opposed to being covered by mulch. As clouds rolled over the sky, I pitched in, hand-scooping mulch into my ineffectual shovel and tossing it around trees.

I was amazed with Group 22. Even

though they’d been battling the same 180 square feet of mulch, they were still upbeat. As we noticed the mulch steadily spreading out, the group’s mood improved further. We grappled and clawed, and the obstinate mulch slowly feathered out.

We finished just as the first raindrops sprinkled the job site. It was now covered, and where there used to be only black tarp, there was blood, sweat, and finally, mulch. The moral of this dirtsmudged story is that two CSC educators, two students, and two children worked for two hours, all because someone asked them. They said they’d help, and they did. Smith and his daughter didn’t have to stop, but they noticed a group in need and they stepped up.

Nine students, nine unfortunate representatives of CSC’s work ethic, did not step up. They probably slept in, or forgot their job, or accidentally went home for the weekend. Either way, these students were out-volunteered by workers half their age: Myles and Jackson. These truant nine were shown-up by their professors and their peers. Sure, Group 22 just spread mulch, but they also honored their promises. They stopped to help their fellow volunteers. They simply gave, and received in return a sore back and an illogical hatred of landscaping. Oh, and remember the three members of Group 22 who stayed behind at Ridgeveiw Bible Church? Brendon MacKearney, Troy Gregory, and Kolton Brown stayed there until 5 p.m., two hours after the mulchers finished, to scrap paint. Chadron is lucky to have volunteers like Group 22, because even though spreading mulch is not a big event, it’s enough.

News Editor & Account Executive This year’s The Big Event marked Chadron State College’s third annual community volunteer project. The Big Event is a student-based service day that is structured around saying ‘thank you’ to the community of Chadron.

The Big Event started at Texas A&M University in 1982 and now occurs at 110 other schools across the nation and has moved to schools in Spain, Australia, Germany, Pakistan, and Italy. The Big Event is one of the largest one-day student-run service projects in the nation.

On April 20, 2013, The Big Event tradition took off at Chadron State College for the first time. Over 400 CSC student, faculty, and staff volunteers helped at 15 job sites in Chadron and surrounding areas. Volunteers interacted with residents at retirement communities, beautified city parks, painted in several buildings, and much more.

This tradition has grown to encompass many more student, faculty, and community volunteers reaching many different job sites. Not only does The Big Event serve the Chadron commu-

nity, but has moved to include Crawford and other small towns near Chadron.

This year, The Big Event exceeded expectations. On April 25, close to 600 student, faculty, and staff volunteers showed up to work for the good of the community. The volunteers were spread out to about 80 job sites, and beginning at noon did what they could for their community. Most groups worked about 3-4 hours.

The Big Event is anticipated to continue the tradition after the annual spring football game.

This event is also expected to expand and help the Chadron area even more in coming years.

This year, some students worked outside planting flowers, raking leaves, and planting trees.

“I wanted to give back to the community,” Regan Gary, 19, freshman of Curtis, said.

Gary was volunteering with other individuals at the former Village Therapy Resources by planting flowers and raking leaves.

Cheyenne Deering, 20, senior of Wall, South Dakota, was the student job site leader.

“It was great,” Deering said. “All the girls worked so hard, and I feel like we really made a difference.”

Weathering the storm Teri Robinson & Megan O’Leary Photo Editor & Account Executive Ominous gray clouds crept over Chadron State Park as 30 volunteers piled out of vehicles to prepare for an afternoon of giving back Saturday during The Big Event.

Volunteers consisting of Chadron State College students, faculty, and staff began arriving at the locations farther out of Chadron, as clouds crept and threatened to ruin the day of community service. Rain drops slowly splattered the pavement and soil at the state park, but students did not falter from the precipitation. The rain started coming down faster, but after a few short minutes let up and allowed the group to work with clouds shading them from the sun.

Parks Superintendent Gregg Galbraith introduced himself and a group of state park staff before explaining what needed to be done at the park and breaking the group of 30 into five smaller groups. At the entrance of the park, a group started tackling a pollination garden that needed hoed and cleared of weeds and old vegetation to prepare for the new plants. Trails for disc golf were cleared, picnic

tables were painted, and two trails were cleared of dead or burned trees from the previous years.

This was the park’s first year asking for volunteers to come out and help clean up, and this stemmed from Galbraith hearing about The Big Event in the news in previous years.

“I saw it in the news and wanted them to come out,” Galbraith said.

As the weather decided to cooperate with the volunteers and allow them to work, chatter turned to directions and achieving goals.

The Cardinal Key National Honor Society and International Club took on the task of planting trees at Camp Norwesca, located near the Chadron State Park.

Kristine Bond, 22, senior of Lodgepole, helped with planting trees.

“Planting trees was a great experience,” Bond said. “We’re saving the Earth and the community one tree at a time.”

Jaycee Housh, 21, junior of Chadron, also participated in planting trees.

“I love living in a community that supports the college so much,” Housh said. “The Big Event is a great way to give back to an amazing community that does so much for the college.”

Seventy-five years is a long time for anything to last, especially in t fast-moving world that we live in today. Erwin and Carol Keim, longtim residents of Chadron, have been married for 75 years and celebrated th accomplishment with their family Saturday as The Big Event voluntee helped clean up their property.

As we sat on the front porch of their modest house, there were you kids running around playing with each other and enjoying the sunshin The creaking of the porch swing, the chirps of birds, and the soun of the volunteers cleaning the backyard all filled the air along with t sounds of the kids playing.

As we started talking, Carol told me about how she and Erw first met.

“Oh things are so much different now,” she said. “It used to that boys and girls went to a dance separate, and boys would com around and ask whoever looked good to dance, so you would if yo liked the looks of them. And he did come ask me to dance. That’s t way I met him.”

Erwin told his side of the story too, saying that he saw Carol sitti down and everybody was dancing, so he walked over to her and ask her to dance, and they spent the night dancing with each other.

Carol and Erwin bought their property in 1955. When th bought the house, the property was quite a disaster according the couple.

“The house had wood on it when we bought it, and the people w had bought it from had had goats and they had eaten some of t wood off of the house,” Carol said. “And Erwin went up in the attic an could stick his hand out from the holes in the attic because the ro was that bad. They had cans sitting up there catching the water. Tha the first thing we did when we came up here was shingle. Erwin d all the work himself.”

She continued to talk about Erwin and how he was quite a han man to have around.

“I’ve done just about everything,” Erwin said. “And I worked in ever thing from the bottom to the top. I enjoyed it, and did it for all my life Erwin and Carol became involved with The Big Event last year wh they called Connie Kittell, of Chadron, the job site coordinator for Th Big Event last year.

“A year ago I heard The Big Event advertised on the radio, and I call Connie first, she is the one that I was involved with last year completel Carol said. “She and her husband came down here and you can’t belie the work they did.”

When Connie saw the need that the Keim’s had for help, she, h husband and several neighbors helped the couple clean up a large amount of trees that fallen during the bad windstorm last year.

“Connie’s husband came down here with his chain saw and tract and he did so much work. Connie brought her kids and anybody s could find to do a little bit of work and that’s what they did,” Carol sai During a phone interview, Kittell went on to say that the couple h given so much to the community that this was the perfect opportun for the community to give back to them. She also said that it served a great teaching opportunity for students that were involved with The B Event. It was a chance to show the volunteers that they are young ,a they should give back to people while they can so that people will willing to help them when they need it.

Kittell also said that Carol is still volunteering and giving back to t community of Chadron. Every Tuesday Carol volunteers at the Bre Basket sponsored by the Saint Patrick’s Parish. It is an organization th the parish organized to take the leftover baked goods from Safeway a give them to families that are in need within the community.

Kittell went on to say what kind and helpful people the Keims are.

Between giving to the community and working on their proper Erwin and Carol have a long list of accomplishments. One of which the quality of their marriage.

“There is a lot of give and take in a marriage, and a lot of hard wor Carol said.

When asked about any family traditions, Erwin said “Just her a me!” which was followed by a chuckle from him and laughs from the re of the family sitting on the porch.

Erwin and Carol have four children, 10 grandchildren, 10 gre grandchildren, and 17 great-great grandchildren.

Several groups of volunteers from CSC flocked to Crawford to participate in The Big Event. The volunteers helped local churches, businesses, and residents make the community a better place.

“They did such a good job after last year that we were eager to get them back,” Crawford’s deputy city clerk Ginger Fleming said. “I hope the people here will see events like this and that it will motivate and get some of our own citizens interested in volunteering.”

At one location, volunteers from a communications class and the Army Reserve Officer Training program helped William Stolldolf, a Vietnam veteran, remove branches, rocks and other various items from his property.

Darma Poonoosamy, freshman of Palmdale, California, said that he feels incomplete when doing something for himself, and that it is important to learn how to work with people. The volunteers from the ROTC were requested by Stolldolf, said CSC ROTC Instructor 1st Lt. Nathan Reicks.

Ron Dyer, a member of the Methodist Church, used the volunteers to improve the quality of the church.

“I think it [The Big Event] is a great idea,” Dyer said. “Most of the congregation is elderly people that can’t do the same work that these younger people can.” Dyer also said that his brother-inlaw was in charge of coordinating with The Big Event staff.

Jim Soester, who served as a librarian at CSC for more than 25 years, is now the curator of the Crawford museum. Soester expressed a positive impression of The Big Event.

“I think it’s great, and that they should make it into a twice-a-year thing,” Soester said. “Once during freshman orientation, and then again in the spring.” ”I think it would give the students a real sense of community and purpose and break from the high-school feeling of orientation,” Soester said.

Junior Tawny Staab, of Sidney, helped a Crawford resident re-paint her home. Staab was originally supposed to be at a different location, but it didn’t have enough volunteers, so she was moved to help paint.

In her first year with The Big Event, Crawford resident Roxie Graham-Marski coordinated three job sites, which included a house being repainted and one of the local churches.

“The person that gives is just as touched as the people they helped,” Graham-Marski said.

“Everyone is blessed. Just knowing that someone cares enough to give up an afternoon to help is a blessing. It’s called The Big Event for a reason.”

“It is a great program,” Eser said. “It’s really exciting that the school is willing to help the community. It is a great blessing.”

Renie Ferron, a Crawford resident, heard about The Big Event from people that participated in it last year.

“I really appreciate it,” Ferron said. “It’s a great thing that helps a lot of people in the community out.”

Brook Bass, board president for Crawford’s Old West Trail Rodeo, had the volunteers assist at the Rodeo grounds in Crawford by peeling decals off the outside of a shipping container and repainting it.

“I just love it,” Bass said. “They’ve just been so much help the past two years, especially after the Atlas clean up they did last year.”

“Its saved us two weeks of evenings’ worth of work,” Bass said.

Mary Bechtold, a staff member at Ponderosa Villa, a nursing home in Crawford, said that the college actually contacted them. This was her first year working with The Big Event.

“It’s a great thing for the community,” Bechtold said. “There is a lack of help here so it’s great to get some help even for a day to work on things.”

A steep climb up the hill next to the cabins was the focus for this site.

Volunteers planted Ponderosa pines to start reforesting the area from the damage fires two years ago.

Exactly 400 trees were purchased and planted along the hillside.

“Reforesting can be a daunting task,” Katelin Gosser, camp director, said. “It would have taken a month with my staff and I doing it.”

Most students broke into groups of two, one to break open the soil and dig deep enough for the tree, while the other placed the tree in the ground and moved the soil back over the roots to hold it in place for growth.

“This is really a blessing,” Gosser said.

As her first year being the camp director, Gosser was pleased to have the volunteers available to assist in planting the trees.

Moving closer to the Chadron city limits, a group of one CSC staff and two students painted walls at the Dawes County Museum under the supervision and assistance of Richard Bird, museum board member.

Small areas of wall needed painting to match with the rest of the museum.

A second museum, the Museum of the Fur Trade, was another location just outside of the city limits where volunteers helped. Staining wood posts and taking off cases to insert or replace display plaques were accomplished by a small group of volunteers. Three students and a museum staff member stained outside while three students, Museum Director Alyson Leas, and two other assistants, were inside changing displays.

“I know college kids have a lot of energy and the cases are heavy so we knew they wouldn’t peter out on us,” Leas said.

As the afternoon began to reach on, volunteers finished at their job sites and took shelter just before a large cloud covered Chadron, dropping large amounts of rain, quickly. Some sites were finishing up as the storm came in, but the rain could not keep them from finishing their tasks.

As the rain continued on throughout the late evening and volunteers finished at their designated job site, a day of giving back for more than 600 CSC students, faculty, and staff ended Saturday night.

The Big Event helped people of all generations last Saturday. Chris Langley, of Charlotte, North Carolina, brought his sons, both under the age of five, to help with the event this year. Langley is usually busy keeping track of his sons, he says as Orrin Langley, the older son, helped dry a cleaned Ford at Rob Walstrom’s dealership.

Getting children started in civic engagement at a young age is hard to do, but The Big Event brings all ages together in the community.

Some of the elderly residents of Chadron beamed with appreciation.

Suze Jones was impressed with the work a group accomplished in such a short amount of time. Kaylee Clayton, freshman of Sargent; Marissa Apland, freshman of Spearfish, South Dakota; and others helped trim bushes, clean gutters, and sweep the driveway for Jones.

Likewise, Mary Allberry also appreciated the help from the young volunteers who dug up holes for rose bushes.

“They did a good job and they saved my back,” said Allberry.

The Pit club members helped paint the Fire Department’s interior. The Pit manager Jennie Robbins, senior of Mitchell, said this is her third year participating in The Big Event.

At The Chadron Record, the rugby club tossed down old newspapers from upstairs to be recycled. Madison Reece, freshman of Hebron, and Que’Nita Greene, freshman of Corning, New York, were in awe at some of the old articles and memorabilia stored in The Record. The members of this job site had to work as a team to make light of the work they were assigned.

Nathaniel Brown, sophomore of Rapid City, South Dakota, was spraying weeds outside of Tommy’s Car Lot. “As a former club president, seeing the club continue to grow and inspire others to help in the community is amazing,” he said. “The Big Event is a starting point for this inspiration to help in the community.”

Teaming up to serve

Angie Webb Advertising Director The Big Event was a day filled with both fun and hard work for many students, faculty members, and staff members. Hundreds of people from the Chadron area gathered around town and around Chadron State College to perform community service, benefitting both businesses and residences.

Upward Bound students helped pick up trash around Elliott Field and the NPAC, as well as paint the interior.

Upward Bound Director Maggie SmithBruehlman said that this was the second year Upward Bound has participated in The Big Event. The students participating attend high school in Chadron and Alliance. SmithBruehlman mentioned that several students from the Marshall Islands, attending Chadron High School, partook in Saturday’s community service.

“This is the most fun community service I’ve ever done,” said Vada Burri, 16, junior of Alliance High School.

The CSC Dining Services group planted

flowers, dug for flag holders in the ground, and cleaned up around Dawes County Courthouse. Director of Food Services Tracy Shuck, the job site leader, explained that the courthouse wished to put up flags all around the property on holidays, but did not know where the holders were located in the ground.

Pizza Hut donated and delivered pizza to the courthouse, according to Deb Kuskie, catering manager.

“It’s a great thing for the community to see the college helping, and the event is very well organized,” said Kuskie.

The cheer team, Nu Delta Alpha Dance Club, and a few students and community members helped clean and reorganize Consuming Fire Dance Studio in downtown Chadron. Jessica Stodola, 22, senior of Clarkson, led the job site.

Wood and sawdust flew at Outlaw Printers as the men’s basketball team helped tear down structures and do handiwork on the second floor of Outlaw Printers. Justyn Anderson, 22, senior of Las Vegas, was the job site leader.

The football team, after their annual spring game, headed to Wilson Park after playing for

a hard day of yard work and spreading wood chips. The job site leaders included Head Coach Jay Long, Offensive Coordinator Chris Stein, Defensive Coordinator Jeff Larson, Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator Craig Jerslid, and Assistant Coach of Wide Receivers Joe McLain.

Chadron Public Schools had a variety of job sites throughout their school system.

Sites were at the Skills House, Chadron High School, Chadron Intermediate School, Chadron Primary School, and Chadron Middle School.

The women’s golf team went to the Skills House to pick up trash and spread wood chips.

The job site leader was Terri Connealy, the women’s golf coach.

Several CSC students went to Chadron High School to clean up trash around the school and the football fields, as well as spread wood chips. David Nesheim, assistant professor of social and communication arts, helped the students as well as served as job site leader.

The Newman House group cleaned up trash and spread wood chips at Chadron In-

termediate School. Jacob Rissler, 22, senior of Gillette, Wyoming, led the job site.

HPER club members also cleaned up trash and spread wood chips at Chadron Primary School. Assistant Professor of Physical and Life Sciences Lara Madison supervised the job site.

At Chadron Middle School, members of the College Republicans club and Pre-Vet majors helped clean up trash and spread wood chips. Madison also led this job site.

At Eagle Theater in downtown Chadron, volunteers from RLA helped theater staff move items and clean the seats. Billie Knifong, manager of Residence Life, was the job site leader.

CSC students made their way to Linda Kallhoff ’s residence to move heavy objects and assist with yard work. Nesheim led this job site.

CSC students, led by Sam Parker, assisted Chadron Community Church with a variety of chores, including cleaning carpets, painting window frames, and moving furniture within the church.

“The Big Event is a great opportunity once a year to give back,” said Heather Ong, 22, senior of Singapore.

Eagles finish season swinging, send Mesa home empty Collin Brook Reporter The Chadron State softball team finished its season last weekend hosting the top two teams in the RMAC, playing a triangular with Metro State University, Denver, and Colorado Mesa University, Grand Junction.

CSC’s first game was a 5-1 loss against top-ranked Metro State on Friday. Metro opened up the weekend with a 3-run homer in the first inning, and CSC was never able to recover, registering just one run off five hits.

The lone run for the Eagles was scored by Jessica Eatmon, senior of Broomfield, Colorado, being brought home by Katelyn Kruger, junior of Highlands Ranch, Colorado. After scoring the run in the second inning, CSC couldn’t string hits together.

CSC’s second game was an exhilarating comeback against Colorado Mesa. Mesa was playing to steal the top spot in the RMAC for next week’s playoff tournament, but CSC

spoiled their chances with a 6-5 victory. Once again, Kruger and Eatmon began the scoring for CSC in the second inning, when Kruger hit a sacrifice fly to bring Eatmon home. The Eagles were down 5-1 in the fifth inning when Eatmon smashed a 2-run homer, followed by a solo home run courtesy of catcher Zoe Humphries, sophomore of Arvada, Colorado.

In the sixth, Mesa fielded two errors to allow Eagles on base, and Coutney Lecher, sophomore of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Amanda Einsphar, junior of McCook, scored to seal the win.

CSC destroyed Mesa in their next meeting Saturday, sending the Mavericks home empty-handed after a 15-6 beatdown. The Eagles wasted no time in this one, scoring seven runs in the first inning. Kruger once again started the scoring for CSC, this time hitting a grand slam to clear all runners. Kruger was immediately followed by Shea Graham, junior of Colorado Springs, Colorado, who hit the very next pitch over the center-field

fence. Eatmon, playing in her last series for the Eagles, once again produced with another solo home run. Mesa would battle back in the next few innings, rallying to bring the score to 8-5 in the fifth. Humphries then hit a 3-run homer just inside the left-field foul marker, and CSC scored another run off a wild pitch.

In the sixth, Eatmon hit another home run, followed by a 2-run homer from Kruger to send Mesa home.

CSC lost the final game of the year against Metro, 9-7. Lecher hit a lead-off home run to tie things up at 1, and after Metro scored three runs in the next two innings, Kruger and Eatmon smacked solo home runs again to narrow Metro’s lead to 4-3. The Eagles would struggle to score the rest of the game, and Metro took a 9-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. Kruger then hit her fourth homer of the day, scoring two other runners, followed by a solo shot from Humphries. The rally just wasn’t enough to bring the Eagles back.

Kruger and Eatmon were the highlights of

the weekend, with Kruger earning 12 RBI’s and Eatmon batting 1.000 in two of her final four games as an Eagle, coupled with plenty of home runs for the both of them. Eatmon was also named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association D-II Player of the Week and the RMAC Player of the Week. This is the first time a CSC player has been honored with the NFCA award.

“I had nothing to stress about at that point so I just went out swinging as hard as I could,” Eatmon said. “I had nothing to lose and I had a lot of family supporting me.”

Next season, the Eagles will lose Eatmon, catcher Casey Polk of Golden, Colorado, and outfielder Rebecca Wetsch, of Erie, Colorado.

The weekend proved that, despite not making the RMAC tournament, CSC had the talent to battle with any team in the conference this year.

“I’m really proud of how the team played this season. We wanted to prove that we belong with the upper echelon teams,” Eatmon said.

CSC freshman Damarcus Simpson, of Lafayette, Georgia, won the long jump event while also shattering his previous school record in the event. Simpson jumped an impressive 25 feet, 1 3/4 inches to break his previous record of 24-2 1/2. He won the event by more than two feet. This

For the CSC women, junior thrower Mel Herl, of Eaton, Colorado, came within nine inches of the school record set by her earlier this spring in the discus with a mark of 164-11 placing third in the event.

Junior Haley Soester, of Crawford, placed fourth in the javelin event with a mark of 123-11. This mark was the best mark by a CSC female athlete in eight years.

The CSC men’s and women’s teams will travel to Colorado State University-Pueblo this weekend to compete in the RMAC championships, starting May 1.

Kruger put on a show for the fans, racking up 12 RBIs on seven hits, four of which were over the fence. The junior hit .357 during the weekend’s games, putting her season average at .374. Kruger also only struck out one time over the course of four games, and only 12 times in the whole season. Kruger will be a huge asset to the Eagles next season.

In her last outing as an Eagle, Eatmon batted nine of 14. In two of the games, she hit a perfect 1.000. Eatmon also hit four home runs and brought in six RBIs. Eatmon was named as the National Fastpitch Coaches Association D-II Player of the Week, and the RMAC Player of the Week. Eatmon is the first player from CSC to earn the NFCA award.

Two Sidney seniors give their final performance Spike Jordan Opinion Editor

For two Sidney seniors, the culmination of four years of work came to a close Monday evening, during a joint senior recital in the Sandoz Center Chicoine Atrium.

Tenor Brendan Mead, a music education major, and baritone Jake Wirth, a music industry major, performed their final recital to a full house of friends and family. Both singers were coached during their college careers by CSC music professor Joel Schreuder.

“I’ve seen big progress in both of them, in their production and musicality,” Schreuder said, “and a lot of that can be attributed to the entire music faculty.”

Both vocalists said that they began rehearsing the music for their senior recital last semester. They performed a number of pieces in English, French, Photo by Spike Jordan and German.

do have some say in the pieces they actually perform.

When asked which pieces were most challenging, Wirth said his French pieces were the most difficult.

“There’s so much vocal technique that goes into French, and it’s just not that easy,” Wirth said.

Wirth said English pieces by Ralph Vaughan Williams were some of his favorite pieces to perform.

“I love the pieces in my Vaughan Williams set,” Wirth said. “I think, personally, that my voice is tailored to those kind of artsong type pieces.”

Mead responded that his most challenging piece was “I hear an army” by Samuel Barber. The piece is inspired by a James Joyce poem of the same name, and featured syncopated rhythms between the piano and voice sections of the music.

“It has some very difficult and interesting rhythmic pattern, and so there’s a lot of parts at the beginning where the piano and the voice don’t match up,” Mead said. “At the begging it’s supposed to sound very uneven because it’s supposed to describe an army approaching.” Mead’s favorite piece is Gustav Mahler’s “Liebst du um Schönheit.”

“I really enjoy the translation,” Mead said, “‘If you love for beauty, do not love me; if you love for youth, do not love me; if you love for wealth, do not love me; but if you love for love, oh yes love me.’ I think that’s very interesting text, because of all the things it talks about, love for love doesn’t change,” Mead said.
