The Light Show-Ugly Duckling is set to light up the stage at 7 p.m., today in Memorial Hall's Auditorium. The Light Show is part of the Galaxy Series and is the last one for the semester. Senate extends election petitions to Friday to be involved. "We haven't had the most positive reputation and we need to make changes towards a positive image," Jones said.

A vote to approve the bylaw providing scholarships to Senate members has been postponed.

A lengthy discussion providing feedback on FYI classes stirred up many emotions during Monday's Senate meeting. Most members felt that FYI classes were not beneficial to their education. Some suggestions to improve FYI classes included correlating the difficulty of the class to its course number and changing the class focus to preparing professional papers and using resources.

Senate approved $10,000 to fund this year's Nearly Naked Mile. The funds will help provide food, T-shirts, backpacks, and prizes.

Mariah Busch Reporter Lack of publicity prompted Senate's executive board to extend the deadline for election petitions. The deadline is extended to all student body members but not Senate members. Petitions must be completed and submitted by Friday. Students should expect to see advertisement through Facebook, Eaglemail, and other school advertisement.

Vice-President Nate Jones addressed the lack of publicity from Senate. Jones hopes to create a Senate Marketing Campaign that would provide financial reports of allocated funds, events sponsored by Senate, and propaganda posters to encourage the student body

CAB takes nominations for executive board Clauson. Five hundred dollars was allocated for scavenger hunt prizes.

The scavenger hunt will take place next Tuesday night, and is going to promote the new text messaging system that has been implemented to promote events throughout campus. Students will receive texts that give them clues as to what they need to find, and whoever finds the items and turns them in first will receive a prize.

Nominations for a new executive board took place, and they will close April 22. Nominees will be voted for at the next scheduled CAB meeting, as there is no meeting next week.

Upcoming events consist of the Blue Key Brain Bowl from 6-9 p.m., and a Double Decker Toga Party/ NOCS at the library from 9 p.m.-midnight, Friday.

Kelli Bowlin Reporter Changes are being made to the constitution of the Campus Activities Board. These changes include adding time limits for guest speakers that come to the meetings; taking the student trustee off of the executive board simply because of prior responsibilities; adding a vice chair of relations to the executive board who will run the Facebook and Twitter accounts, take pictures, and promote the activities going on around campus. Voting for these changes will take place on April 29.

Jaycie Cheatham Reporter There has been talk across the Chadron State campus about the alleged 135 students placed on first time academic probation for the 2013 fall semester.

“The number of students placed on first time probation is similar to past fall semesters,” Frances Gonzalez, coordinator of the Reta King Library Learning Center, said.

Governor appoints new student trustee Ashley Swanson Managing Editor

Governor Dave Heineman recently appointed Jacob Rissler, 21, junior of Gilette, Wyo., as Chadron State’s student trustee for the 2014-15 academic year.

“In my mind for me and my career, that’s the next logical step to go,” Rissler said about why he applied.

“I’m honored that I was chosen,” he said. “I was a little wary being from Wyoming and being chosen from a Nebraska governor.”

Each year, Nebraska’s governor appoints a student trustee from CSC,

Peru State College, and Wayne State College. The students selected sit on the board of trustees and report what is going on at their college. Trustees do not have a voting right on the board.

In April, Rissler will travel with Danny Reynaga, former student trustee, to Peru State College for the board of trustees meeting. On the board, Rissler will serve on the enrolment and marketing committee. In July, he along with the PSC and WSC trustees will go to a training session to be formed of their official duties.

“I just want to continue to serve the students to the best of my ability,” he said.

Rissler is a business administration major and was the only applicant.

Eager students awaited people to bring in their historical artifacts to the CSC History Harvest project on Saturday, in the Mari Sandoz Center.

Several people showed up with artifacts to be added to the History 465 Processes in the North American West’s digital archive. The students checked the artifacts in and took measurements, took photos of the them. Later, the photos were added to a digital archive for the project. While some students took measurements and photos of the artifacts, others interviewed the artifact owner.

A dozen artifacts were checked in, including a star quilt, a graveyard map and registry, and a scarf.

According to David Nesheim, social and communication arts assistant professor, Chardon’s History Harvest had the same results as Lincoln’s History Harvest based on population vs. artifacts collected.

Nesheim said the History Harvest is a project that he would like to continue. He believes that people care about their history; it’s just finding out how to connect with those people.

Despite a small turnout, Nesheim felt the History Harvest was still a good learning experience for his students.

“It was a good learning experience,” Chad March, 21, junior of Laramie, Wyo., and History 465 student said, “We just need to fine tune it.”

“They promoted all of it, they did everything. It was an effective campaign even if we didn’t get the outcome we wanted”, Nesheim said.

Candidates visit CSC for senior director position Sarah Townsend Reporter Last week two candidates for the recently opened position of senior director of student affairs visited Chadron State College. Both candidates are currently employed at South Dakota School of Mines, Rapid City. The candidates toured the campus and went to lunch at the CSC cafeteria to talk with some students and student government representatives.

On March 26, Pat Allen Beu met with students and answered some questions about himself and his reasons for applying for the job. As the current director of retention and test-

ing registrar and academic services, he is actively involved with helping students.

“I enjoy helping students be successful. That is the main thing I am worried about,” Beu said.

The student government representatives asked many questions regarding his philosophies on helping student government and what he would change if he was to receive the job.

He was also asked how he could improve retention at Chadron State.

Beu has been at the School of Mines for 10 years. Before his time there, he was employed at Peru State College, Peru. as the director of student services and support for ten years and at the University of Great Falls, Great Falls, Mont., for 13 years as the learning resource counselor before his time at Peru.

The second candidate for the job, Michael Keegan, visited Chadron on Friday. He is currently the director of student activities and leadership at South Dakota Mines. He has been at the school since 2006.

“I work heavily with students and student government,” Keegan said. He is a co-adviser to the student senate at Mines.

Keegan has experience working with student government and with student groups on the campus in Rapid City. The student government representatives from CSC that went to lunch with Keegan asked him many questions about his work with the student government at Mines.

Both candidates are going through an interview process at CSC. The decision for who will receive the job will be made later this semester.

EDITORIAL–THE EAGLE’S VIEW

Tally a vote that will ensure a better Senate This Friday, the petitions for Student Senate are due, and the votes for the positions will be tallied shortly after. We wish the best for every candidate and hope they aim to do positive things in the event that they are elected. With that said, it is a fact of life that everyone’s skill set is shaped differently, and therefore, we all have jobs and positions that are better suited for us than others. To be blunt, some candidates in the upcoming races are better than others in regards to their aspired positions.

Because we are the ones who ultimately decides who wins the race, it is our responsibility to make sure the best candidates are chosen. We should all take this seriously. Too many people have been frustrated too many times by the choices made by Senate, and this is our opportunity to prevent that from happening as frequently in the future.

If you have not been frustrated with many of the approvals made by Senate, then you have probably not been paying close attention. We also have the most to lose and the most to gain in any election. It is the students that benefit from good decisions and also suffer the consequences of bad decisions made by student government. Don’t think differently — elections like Student Senate do have an impact on our daily lives. Research any of the approvals made this past year and you can see how.

With that said, we know many of the candidates and know that many of them hold the potential to be great as Senators or office holders. We simply hope that the student body shows enough insight to elect individuals that will make good decisions on their behalf.

Parents should vaccinate their kids

D

uring my time as a contributor to The Eagle, I have received my fair share of criticism. Some people have told me that my opinion articles are good, and sometimes, people tell my opinions suck. But, that’s their opinion, and I’ve never really cared much about negative feedback.

I can understand constructive criticism, but when people just say, “Hey man, your opinion is bad and you should feel bad,” as far as I’m concerned, they can go fall into a volcano, or something of a similar nature.

But over the course of the weekend, I was notified that a piece of homework I did was docked points, partially on grounds of “civility.” I wasn’t quite sure what I had done wrong, so I went to Sakai to see what the fuss was

about.

Upon further investigation, I found out that someone didn’t like my forum post, and ended up being a little tense about it. The topic of discussion was immunizations and children. To be exact, we were debating whether or not you should have your children immunized.

In hindsight, I should have clarified that I was being sarcastic because there were some people who didn’t pick up on it. I can’t say that I blame them though; sarcasm isn’t very easy to pick up over text, so if I have made anybody feel offended, I apologize.

However, on the topic of civility, I will say this: I acknowledge the fact that there will be people that get offended once in a while by my opinion. However, the way they react to my opinion, especially when I’m not specifically being condescending to anyone, should not dictate whether I was being civil or not. I do believe that people should get their kids immunized. It’s either that or having them die young of tuberculosis or black death, or something equally painful.

Growing up in western Nebraska, I have been exposed to a lot of unusual (i.e. Republican) politics, and one of the things that used to be all the rage were swine flu vaccines.

I don’t know if you remember, but swine flu used to be a big deal back in 2009 when nobody really had anything

to report on, so why not make a problem? It was like watching a game of Pandemic 2 come to life. As such, vaccines were administered all across the country, and eventually to school children. I was in the eighth grade when this was going on, so I got mine, mostly because I didn’t want to get freaking swine flu. That would suck.

But I knew a lot of other people who didn’t get their shots because of two things; their parents’ horrible belief that vaccines lead to autism, and their parent’s over-hyped belief that the vaccine wasn’t tested. Lo and behold, some of the people who weren’t immunized caught the bug and ended up taking a nice little trip to the hospital.

To me, that’s just irresponsible parenting.

Since when should parents’ stupidity decide whether or not their child has access to the same medical treatment as everyone else? That is a horrible way to parent. It’s almost as bad as “pox parties.”

For those who aren’t familiar, a pox party is the act of dragging your kids to a sleepover where one of the kids has chicken pox. The idea is to get your kids sick and supposedly strengthen their immune systems.

Fortunately, there are better ways to strengthen your child’s immune systems. They are called vaccines. Plus, it’s a lot simpler than trying to force your kid to get chicken pox.

Students’ use of technology decimates their chances of learning actively in the classroom.

Classes shouldn’t intergrate tech devices

or courses at any educational level in which technological devices such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones are not necessitated by the curriculum, their forced integration can decimate any chance of effective learning.

It is nice in theory for various reasons, but the reality is technological devices in traditional classrooms are negative. Some of the most prominant reasons are that students are likely to fail rudimentary tasks, they are more isolated in their thinking, and they are less motivated to learn.

Wait, what? That is something a fourth grader should know in their sleep. I asked her to work on it more before asking for help and she said, “I can’t figure it out because I don’t have a calculator.”

It was not an isolated instance as many other students simply could not multiply either — all of them inherently very smart individuals.

Not only do children rely on calculators for all their multiplication, they also are failing at other rudimentary tasks. According to a survery applied by over 2,000 mothers, “58 percent of children ages two to five know how to play a basic computer game; conversely, 52 percent can ride a bike.”

Older kids and even adults are not exempt from this. When people talk about subjects like geometry, chemistry, and Earth science, I feel shameful.

Why? Because I know nothing about them. Why? Because my teachers always gave us laptops in school during class and I did nothing but play games along with everyone else in the class. This is on us, but also on the teachers, schools, and school district for not providing an environment conducive to active learning.

Students are likely to fail rudimentary tasks I help tutor fourth graders in math during the week. I am constantly amazed by how intelligent they are, in fact I have to keep on my toes otherwise they will be tutoring me soon.

One day a very smart student asked me to help them with part of a problem, “What is five times four?”

help us in-class. But let’s be honest, 90 percent of us are primarily on Facebook during those classes. So what are we learning from the professor that we are tuning out to the sounds of friends’ Facebook posts?

So when it comes time to do an assignment out of class, we have to rely solely on our own thoughts since we don’t remember what the professor said. This is isolated thinking.

Students are less motivated to learn The following is an excerpt from “What Teachers Make,” a poem by Taylor Mali: “I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.

I can make a C+ feel like a Congressional Medal of Honor and an A- feel like a slap in the face.

When technological devices become the primary source of learning, what is going to motivate them to do so? Because I and most other are not going to be motivated by a piece of plastic that is absent of any human element.

As a prospective teacher and someone who aspires to bring out the potential of the kids around me, I have nothing but their best interests in mind. So along with having to independtly re-teach myself the aforementioned subject, I am thinking about what is in the best interest of the students.

I might not like technology personally, but this belief is primarily built on the idea that I truly think technological devices in their classrooms, and ours in college, are having a huge negative impact on all our learning.

Softball team scores 31 runs winning 3 of 4 games Collin Brook Reporter Evan Brooks Reporter

The CSC softball team won their opening game against Western New Mexico University Saturday with a score of 4-3, but lost the second game of the day 5-3.

In the opening game, the Eagles won despite being out-hit 12 to 5.

Pitcher Kylee Polsley, senior of Omaha, avoided trouble early in the second inning when WNMU loaded the bases with two outs. Polsley struck out two consecutive batters, and ended the inning with the help of a diving catch in center field by Rebecca Wetsch, junior of Erie, Colo.

After Western built a three-run lead in the fifth inning, the Eagles rallied off consecutive hits with two outs, which led to a single by Courtney Lecher, freshman of Fort Collins, Colo., scoring two runs.

The Eagles took the lead in the sixth inning after a Western error scored the final run of the game.

The second game was a back-and-forth affair much like the first. Western took the lead in the first, but Jessica Eatmon, junior of Broomfield, Colo., and Katelyn Kruger, sophomore of Highlands Ranch, Colo., scored in the second to put the Eagles back in front.

The Eagles only scored one run the rest of the game, while Western scored twice in the third inning, once in the fourth inning, and the final run in the sixth inning.

CSC picked up two more conference wins Sunday in another double-header against WNMU. The Eagles beat the Mustangs by a score of 8-6 in the first game and won a roller coaster of a second game, 16-15.

With the pair of wins, CSC improves their overall record to 14-16 and their RMAC record to 11-7.

The Eagles managed to take control of each game in the third inning, scoring six runs in each third frame.

In the first game, Western New Mexico jumped out to an early 5-1 lead after two innings, but in the third inning Chadron State’s offense flourished.

got things rolling with an RBI single.

Eatmon followed with a two-run double and Kruger blasted a three-run home run to put the Eagles on top 7-5.

After two scoreless innings, Kruger gave the Eagles one last run by singling to shortstop and bringing Lecher home.

Western New Mexico’s Stephanie Higgins, junior of Escondido, Calif., hit a solo homer in the top of the seventh, but CSC’s Breeze Phillips, sophomore of Evergreen, Colo., closed out the game by setting the last two down by ground outs.

Kruger finished with three of the Eagles’ 10 hits for the game.

Shea Graham, sophomore of Colorado Springs, went 2-for-3 and Sarah Knudsen, senior of Parker, Colo., contributed with a solo home run.

In the second game, CSC looked to take away any hope the Mustangs had of a split early on by jumping out to a convincing 13-2 lead after three innings, but WNMU scored six runs in the fourth and five more in the seventh in their attempt for a huge upset.

Despite the Mustangs’ rally, Polsley got the final three outs to put the game away.

“We had to use literally everyone to win those games,” Eatmon said. “They’re a good team. We had to pick up our offense a little bit to support our pitching.”

As they did in the first game, CSC had 10 hits for the game, but five of them went for extra bases.

“Not having very many hits, we produced a lot of runs,” Lecher said. “So, we were pretty efficient.”

Londo hit a three-run home run, Eatmon added a two-run homer, and both Zoe Humphries, freshman of Arvada, Colo., and Taylor Bauer, freshman of Rapid City, S.D., hit back-to-back homers.

Wetsch hit a triple for the other extra base hit. Humphries led the way with two hits and three RBIs. Londo and Wetsch also drove in three runs.

Graham and Rebekah Anthony, sophomore of Monument, Colo., each had an RBI. The Eagles travel to Pueblo, Colo., this weekend for a four-game series against Colorado State University-Pueblo.

Saturday’s games are set to be played at noon and 2 p.m. and Sunday’s at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Senior softball player pitches her way across the state Conor P Casey Reporter

Since high school she has always let her pitching do the talking.

Kylee Polsley grew up eight hours east of Chadron in Omaha, and during her final two years of high school attended Omaha Skutt.

While at Skutt, she garnered attention on some impressive high school teams. In her junior year, the Skyhawks finished runner-up at state and her senior season in 2009, they finished fourth with Polsley earning All-Nebraska recognition.

“Omaha Skutt put my name out there,” Polsley said. “That program and team enabled me to be recognized.”

Polsley’s pitching caught the eye of Iowa Western, an athletically renowned junior college.

“It was Iowa Western from the start. I knew that they were a powerhouse, with the tradition, their facilities and their coaching staff I was drawn in right away,” she said.

Polsley shined on the mound in her two years at Iowa Western. She had a career record of 43-8 and in her final year had an ERA of 2.31, while striking out 144 batters.

Following her stint at Iowa Western, Polsley was looking to attend a college where she could continue her athletic career. It was then that Iowa Western’s head coach, Lana Ross, approached coach Rob Stack about Polsley.

“Coach Stack really trusted coach Ross’ opinion, because he never even saw me throw a pitch,” Polsley said. “He just knew my stats.”

Stack proceeded to call Polsley after his discussion with Ross, to let her know CSC was interested.

Within a week Polsley took a visit, and fell in love with Chadron State the minute she stepped on campus.

“Everything seemed right,” she said. “The campus was beautiful, and the plains were great. Also, coach Stack was a family oriented coach, which was really big for me.” see SOFTBALL, page 12

from page 11 As a pitcher coming to Chadron State, she knew her ability would be tested in the RMAC. Polsley was well accustomed to facing stiff competition; however, the RMAC is a hitterdominant league, so she knew the competition would be tougher.

“I knew coming into this type of conference, I would have to prepare for every hitter I faced,” Polsley said. “In junior college, I typically faced the best batters at the beginning of the order, but now I have to prepare to face good hitters throughout the entire order.”

She has prepared well.

In her first year as an Eagle she excelled on the mound. She maintained a 4.15 ERA while pitching 82 innings, and compiling three shutouts, the second most in school history.

However, the Eagles failed to make the RMAC postseason tournament.

Now, well into Polsley’s senior season the Eagles’ are sitting seventh in the RMAC standings with an 11-7 record, and 11 conference games remaining. She knew coming into the season the Eagles’ could make the tournament and succeed in conference play.

“We are capable of anything,” said Polsley.

With already 80 innings pitched, Polsley has collected eight wins, while holding opposing batters to a .310 average. She has 62 strikeouts and only 26 walks.

She believes that with the senior leadership, coupled with the team’s all-around ability, the Eagles can make the RMAC tournament.

“The seniors are all positive leaders and believe in each other. We have high expectations, and making the tournament is the ultimate goal,” she said.

Track and field team spears competition in Spearfish, S.D. Christopher Smith Reporter CSC men and women’s track and field team won 15 events combined as they opened up the outdoor season this past weekend at Black Hills State Yellow Jacket Spring Open in Spearfish, S.D., the meet attracted six different schools from around the nation.

CSC’s Alyssa Norton, senior of Rushville, won three throwing events Saturday. She threw a career-best 46 feet, 3 1/4 inches in the shot put. She won the hammer throw at 157-6. She also won the discus with a 148-3 mark.

Norton was named the RMAC’s Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week.

Another winner this weekend was Jayme Nunes, junior of Alliance, with a career best 18:52.78 in the 5000 meter run.

Other event winners for the women were Tory Snyder, freshman of Pierre,

S.D., in the 200 meters; Ashley Riesen, senior of Chadron, in the 800 meters; Kelsy Wood, freshman of Hemingford, in the 100 meter high hurdles; Shelby Bozner, sophomore of Rock Springs, Wyo., in the javelin event; and Kali Blevins, sophomore of Harvard, in the pole vault. The women’s 4x100 relay team also won with a time of 49.34.

For the CSC men, Charith Kapukotuwa, senior of Chilaw, Sri Lanka, won the shot put and threw a career best mark of 55-10 1/2.

CSC’s Phil Rivera, senior of Apple Valley, Calif., won the 400 meters with a time of 48.51 seconds. Zerek Jones, sophomore of La Junta, Colo., and Fred Culp, junior of Mililani, Hawaii, finish second and third respectively.

Skyler Hoopes, junior of Lusk, Wyo., went 14-5 1/4 to win the pole vault event.

The Eagles’ next meet is Thursday, April 10 at South Dakota Mines in Rapid City.

The show will run April 7-18. The show’s reception will be on April 11 from 4-6 p.m. in the Memorial Hall Lobby. The show will include works by Rob Heckman, junior of Crawford; Macee Kellner, senior of Bucklin, Kan.; Julya Briseño, senior of Kenosha, Wis.; Christina Ferrero, senior of Bayard.

“The work represents the culminating experience for each of them,” Bentz said.

Clint Johnson Contributor April 7 through 18 there will be a free and open to the public Senior Thesis Art show in Memorial Hall. The show will feature four senior artists who will graduate from Chadron State College. Julya Briseno of Kenosha, Wis., Christina Ferrero of Bayard, Rob Heckman of Crawford, and Macee Kellner, Kan., will be the featured artist.

Many mediums will be shown in the presentations. Inluding Paintings, sculpures, graphic design projects, museum studies presentations, and many other types of art. The show will be in modified salon style.

A reception for the artists will be held April 11 from 4-6 p.m.
