Tech advances mean cheaper education?

echnology is not only changing the face of education, but is also changing how much money students keep in their wallets.

In 2012, the non-profit College Board association estimated the annual cost of textbooks for students at four-year colleges at $1,168, and researchers predict that number will only get higher.

From 2011 to 2012, textbook prices rose 8.1 percent, while other goods rose only 1.4 percent, materials from the U.S. Department of Labor state.

At Chadron State, administrators’ push toward using open educational resources, teaching materials that are freely accessible and openly licensed, is having an effect on the bookstore operating out of the college’s Student Center.

The 2,900-square-foot Eagle Pride Bookstore is a subsidiary of Validis Resources, and currently has an operating agreement with the college until June 2016.

In exchange for licensing rights and a space on campus, Chadron State earns an annual $100,000 commission from the bookstore, plus a percentage of its annual sales.

Music professor wins CSC’s Teaching Excellence Award Celeste Lee Contributor

S

andy Schaefer, director of the music business program at Chadron State, is one of three nominees for the 2013 Nebraska State College System’s Teaching Excellence Award.

Schaefer won the CSC’s annual Teaching Excellence Award, which automatically nominates him for the NSCS award.

“I basically inspire and share my love of music,” Schaefer said. “I am lucky to have a job that allows me to do this.”

Schaefer directs “The Birds,” a student jazz group that regularly performs at Wrecker’s Roadhouse in Chadron, as well as other events regionally. This experience allows students to learn how to collaborate and develop responsibility to the group, he said.

“When you put a student on stage, Schaefer they learn to stand on their feet and improvise, which is high-impact learning,” he said. Schaefer arranges every song “The Birds” perform.

After coming to CSC in 1999, Schaefer developed the music business program in 2002. As a part of that program he takes students to the annual National Association of Music Merchants show in California, which is closed to the public and by invitation only.

“Everybody in the world who builds instruments or supplies and buyers for retail stores of the music industry attend,” Schaefer said. Generation Next, a part of NAMM that encourages students majoring in music business, is a major event for the students attending the tradeshow.

This semester a former CSC student of Schaefer’s music business degree is interning with NAMM. The association takes only a single intern per semester.

Schaefer has taught both inperson and online classes, and has introduced innovations in both formats.

He developed one of the first online fine arts classes at CSC, and teaches his “African American Popular Music” class with his textbook, “Here to Stay: Rock & Roll Through the 70s.”

He records lectures and gathers YouTube videos that he posts online for this class.

His accomplishments and accolades do not stem solely from the

classroom, however.

Schaefer was instrumental in developing and maintaining the radio station KJZC 90.5 at CSC. This is a noncommercial station that plays only jazz music. The FCC opened a window for this station in 2007, with seven days to file applications. After being chosen by the FCC, it took Schaefer and Richard Dabnay a former NASA employee, three years to get the station on the air.

Schaefer is also part of CSC Professors of Jazz who have been entertaining audiences since their formation in 2007. They perform original compositions and a mix of well-known jazz standards.

The NSCS’ criteria for the award includes demonstrated teaching effectiveness, academic advising, professional development, course quality, and other professional contributions. The recipient receives the award and a check for $3,000. Sheri Grotrian-Ryan, associate professor of business, from Peru State College and Mark Leeper, professor of political science, from Wayne State College, are the other two nominees.

Cheerleaders open ranks this weekend Brooke Schumacher Contributor “To the G, To the O, yell go, GO.” Visitors to any number of Chadron State’s athletic events have most likely heard these and other chants being shouted by a group of girls from the sidelines.

If you’ve secretly been envious and have wanted to join, now is your chance.

Cheerleading tryouts are scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday in the Nelson Physical Activity Center’s upper-level dance room.

All full time and incoming students with a GPA of at least 2.0 with

experience in cheer or dance are eligible to tryout, cheerleading coach Ann Hanson said Friday.

Hanson explained the tryout format as well as what she is looking for in candidates.

“I’m looking for girls who like to smile and have great attitudes,” Hanson said. “Cheering is fun, but hard work. It’s a big commitment.”

The candidates will learn a cheer and dance as well as go through an interview process, she said.

The cheerleaders are required to attend all football games, as well as all home basketball games for the men’s and women’s teams, where they will stunt and dance. Stunting experience isn’t required, however, Hanson said.

“I’m looking for girls who could fill the base positions,” she said.

he Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees voted March 15 to discontinue Chadron State’s library information management major, citing low enrollment numbers and lack of demand.

King Library’s Assistant Director Shawn Hartman said Tuesday that the all-online major will not be offered in the fall, but that elements of it will be offered as a minor option for communication arts, English, and interdisciplinary studies students.

Hartman said it was common for education majors to use the course to become more marketable and that the online aspect allowed stayat-home moms and non-traditional students to earn the degree.

Although Hartman is disappointed that the major will not be offered, she said she understands.

“The demand for the program was low,” she said.

Students currently majoring in library information management will be allowed to finish the program requirements, but no new students can take the program as a major, Hartman said.

The system’s trustees evaluate academic programs based upon third-party criteria that include graduation rates and the number of credit hours students in the program produce.

“Each academic major is analyzed using criteria and productivity thresholds established by the Nebraska Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education,” materials from the board’s March 15 meeting state. “The review includes consideration of student credit hours, headcount enrollment and related data annually generated in the department.”

Heineman appoints new student trustee Samuel Parker Contributor

N

ebraska Gov. Dave Heineman appointed a Chadron State College junior, studying legal studies, as the institution’s new student trustee for the upcoming 2013-14 academic year.

Heineman appointed Danny Reynaga, 20, of Alliance, to the position in early March after reviewing a pool of applicants that the college submitted to the Nebraska State College System.

Reynaga will join fellow students from Wayne and Peru State Colleges on the NSCS Board of Trustees as a non-voting member.

Six appointed members, the system chancellor, and the Nebraska state commissioner of Education, along with the three student trustees, make up the board.

The board meets five to six times each calendar year. It is responsible for discussing and voting on policies for each college.

Though Reynaga will sit on the board, a student trustee has no vote.

“I act as the voice of the students on the board,” Reynaga said *when*.

A major role of student trustees is being involved in the Board’s Enrollment and Marketing Committee, *Reynaga said?*. Trustees voice their opinion on new techniques for improving the student life.

Reynaga wants to make sure the college’s students are heard.

“You can’t voice your opinion of the students if you don’t actually know what their opinions are,” Reynaga said. He said this is very important, especially with all the new improvements that are occurring on campus. Reynaga believes the best way to be informed about students is to be involved in activities on campus.

Reynaga is also excited to gain more knowledge of the procedures and statutes that are followed by the board. He said this position will be very applicable to his major.

CAPITAL CONSTRUCTION: VISUAL UPDATE

SHIFTINGSAND Chadron State hired Chadron-based Fuller Construction to extend utilities from the city of Chadron’s lines to the Rangeland Center’s construction site on the college’s eastern end. The company constructed a north-south trench at the corner of E. 10th and Cedar Streets to bring water and sewer lines to an area adjacent E. 12th Street. The utility lines will also service the Eagle Ridge housing project.

“That sewer line had to be tied into a sewer line in the president’s front yard,” Blair Brennan, physical facilities coordinator, said Wednesday. Brennan said the water line is scheduled to be installed next week and would run adjacent to the sewer line. In addition to water and sewage, the college also is extending its high-voltage system so that future construction on the east end of campus can benefit from the extension.

pring has finally found its way around the corner, and, man, does the weather feel great!

Though this is Nebraska, and the weather can change at a moment’s notice, that shouldn’t stop people from enjoying a moment of great weather.

With the sun shining, and temperatures in the upper 50s and 60s, there’s no reason to stay inside—except when class is in session, of course.

As the gym isn’t an ideal place to go for some people, taking a walk or going for a jog is a great way to start the season off right. Walking is an easy way to shed some pounds, strengthen muscles, and get a break from studying.

“Walking is the best,” Diana Lecher, cardiac rehab nurse at Chadron’s hospital, said. “It has the lowest drop out rate.”

Walking too slow a pace? Go for a jog. Unless someone can run at a fast pace for a long period of time, an easy jog is the perfect thing to clear the mind, and move the body in a healthy

direction.

Running and walking are not the only things people can do to get active. Gathering a bunch of friends to play frisbee or sand volleyball is a great way to have fun while getting off the couch.

Although this is college, there’s no reason to hide a person’s inner child.

A game of tag involves a lot of running, is fun, and gets the heart and muscles working. Working the heart makes this muscle beat faster, which improves cardiac output and oxygen strength, Lecher said.

Feel like escaping the boundaries of the indoors, but don’t want to work out? Take the time to read a book or do homework outside—this allows a person to be productive while relaxing. And what’s better than the feeling of the warmth of the sun?

With a load of classes, homework, studying, and working, it’s difficult to find a time to exercise, but just taking a few minutes each day can help; even if only a little bit.

Healthy eating has been known to be rather difficult, especially if they’re on the go, or have a twenty-minute lunch break before the next class; it’s easy to skip the healthy foods and go straight for everything fatty.

The cafeteria and Grille offers a variety of options when choosing that perfect healthy meal or snack.

Although that piece of cake looks tempting, grab an apple or banana instead.

Craving a basket-full of fries?

Ask for a small amount instead of the heaping amount normally given.

There are other things a person can do to eat right, besides just going for the fruits and veggies. Grabbing a smaller plate reduces the amount of food piled onto it, which helps in the eating less category.

Lecher suggests limiting sugary

drinks including vitamin water, gatorade, chocolate milk, and soda.

“Our bodies were designed to drink water,” Lecher said.

It’s likely that everyone has had a moment when they’ve just eaten, but still feel hungry.

Instead of reaching for a cookie, no matter how badly they want it, grab a handful of almonds or a piece of bread—this will fill the stomach until the next meal.

Setting rules can also help—ones such as not eating anything after a certain hour at night, or limiting sweets to two or three times a week.

A habit to get into is not eating when a person feels bored. If he or she absolutely needs something to eat, grab a banana or a celery stick, not a candy bar or something else he or she might regret later.

FAT-FREE MILK: milk is full of calcium and vitamin D, which helps bone health. It also reduces the risk of heart disease. Chocolate milk is a good replenishment after a workout.

WHOLE-WHEAT BREAD: high in fiber and nutrients, whole-wheat bread helps lower risks of diabetes and obesity. It can also help lower cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure.

Time management is key for stress management.

F

reshman depression and the sophomore slump; junior jitters and senior-itis. Our feverish longing for summer manifests itself in many ways. The light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter, but the reality of responsibility crushes the daydreams and returns us to sobriety.

The semester is drawing to a close and the urge to drop your backpack and say, “screw it” is hard to fight.

You are dreading putting off the end-of-the-semester assignments, and they are silently stalking you through the brickwork jungle of campus, waiting to pounce There’s no reason to sugar coat it; stress is something you are going to feel. The nightmare of defaulting on your obligations leads to sleepless nights that affect your performance.

There’s hope to turn things around, but in this economy, nothing comes for free. Time is money, and it all comes down to how we manage that time.

Try shaving 10 minutes from meal times. It adds up to 30 minutes a day that you can use to sit down and actually accomplish something.

Don’t skip breakfast. That morning pot of coffee makes you alert, but it doesn’t provide the calories you need to function, and the last thing you need to be is a neurotic caffeine-zombie Limit your Facebook use. Our lives tend to revolve around being connected, but sometimes you need to step back. You can function without it, and it might be helpful to avoid the distractions and see classmates in person.

Power naps are a godsend. If you’re dozing off while reading, don’t fight it. Grab a quick bit of shut eye and rest your overworked brain. Just don’t let that 15 minutes turn into an afternoon.

Although the weather has finally become agreeable, make sure if you take a break from studying to go outside and enjoy the sunshine that remind yourself; it is only a break.

The library is a great place to study, but so is the library lawn. Sitting in the sun while studying limits the time you waste daydreaming about sitting in the sun.

There are many more ways to strike your delicate balance of time, and we all benefit from sharing our tips with each other. A bit of encouragement or a sliver of advice go a long way for someone who is struggling, so spread the word.

s the stereotypical “poor college student’, I decided to stay on campus over the past break.

I had noticed a sign on the front of Kent Hall saying they were going to turn off the power at 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, so I had made the proper preparations to make sure that my food wouldn’t spoil or my ice cream wouldn’t melt.

I was set to wake up around noon to put my things somewhere else. However, to my dismay, they shut the power off earlier than scheduled, so my food ended up going bad anyways. In addition, a majority of people I talked to didn’t even know that they were going to be shutting off the power. All they put up was one sign. No more, no less.

Not only that, but the wireless modems went haywire, giving users full bars, yet dial-up speeds, and the second floor

was out of internet the entire day. I knew would do, I slept. M

y wonderful readers, you may blame the following rant on a table of eight, three of whom were screeching infants. After said table racked up a $67 bill, they left me a $3 tip. Not even five percent.

As college students, I’m sure we all go out to eat at least once a month with friends or family. And since that is probably true, I think it would be a good idea to lay down some tip advice for my fellow college students.

First of all, I think it’s important that everyone knows that waiters and waitresses make under minimum wage.

The federal law states that servers have to make at least $2.13 an hour. If they don’t make up to minimum wage in tips, management is required to make it up in their paycheck.

Minimum wage, however, is actually under the poverty line. Many servers, who make up 10 percent of the workers in our country, are living under the poverty line.

Think about that for a moment when you are putting down a quarter. Your server has to pay rent, the same as you.

Next, keep in mind that your server is good at profiling. We know who will be a good tipper and who will be a bad tipper, and adjust the amount of service we give to that table.

Older couples are usually great tippers. When I get a couple who is in their sixties, I will make sure to amp up the friendly when I wait on them.

College students are the worst tippers. It’s a generalization, sure, but when a table of ten college students comes in to eat, your server is betting that the table is not going to tip well.

The server will bring you your burgers and your beers, but odds are they won’t give you the best service they could. Because we’ve all seen it before. Students celebrating the end of the semester and leaving just a dollar on the table. Why? Because they’re just as broke as we are.

Rule number one when tipping: if you can’t afford to leave a 15 percent tip, you can’t afford to eat out.

If you do come in and treat your server with respect, then put down a 20 percent tip, they’ll remember. The next time you come in, that server will give you as much attention as they can afford. Not to mention they’ll let other servers know. “Oh, I had her last week, she tips well,” is something that I’ve heard in the kitchens before. Trust me, good service will continue if your tips are good.

Take another example of profiling.

There is a man who comes into the restaurant I work at quite often. He always comes in alone, but he is very courteous and always leaves a five-dollar tip.

By now, when I see him coming, I know where he likes to sit, how long to wait before I re-fill his drink, and I hope that I am his server.

Now do you want to be the guy that

gets exceptional service, or the college student who the servers complain about?

If you don’t want to be the subject of your server’s next rant, these are some really simple rules that you can follow when tipping.

1. 15 percent is the minimal standard when it comes to tipping. Even if your server did not introduce him/ herself, if your food got to your table, your server deserves at least 15 percent.

Now, mention I say minimal standard.

If your server is doing a good job, they probably even deserve 20 percent.

The only reason not to tip 15 percent is if you were forgotten for an hour and your food comes out cold. Otherwise, your server was trying as hard as he or she could. That server deserves at least 15 percent.

2. Add a dollar for each kid under three years old. What some people just do not seem to understand is that we do not only have to put up with your kid shrieking for Macaroni and Cheese and crayons, we also have to clean up after it. That mess on the floor deserves much more than your petty three dollars.

3. Do not, under any circumstances, tip a dollar per person. The last thing your server wants to see after giving all his or her attention to your two top, is two dollars. Trust me, we talk about you if you do that. And we don’t say nice things.

4. If we look busy, we are busy. Nothing will drive your server more crazy than when he or she has five tables, and your table is complaining about slow service. The food is going to take a while, don’t worry it will eventually get to you. A lot of people will pull your server thin, so have patience and don’t forget that he or she is trying.

Smith steps down after 26 years Molly Wedan Sports Editor Chadron State College’s athletic director Brad Smith, announced his retirement Tuesday after being on CSC’s athletic staff for 26 years.

“Being an athletic director and helping coach football leaves very few weekends free and little free time,” Smith said Wednesday. “I have a family and grandkids I need to spend time with now.”

Smith started his CSC career as its football coach and athletic director in March of 1987. He coached the college’s football team from 1987 to 2004. Before coaching football for Chadron State, he was a high school football coach and was an assistant coach at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill. All of that experience helped lead the Eagles to a 136-win and 57-loss record during his 17 years coaching.

President Randy Rhine spoke positively about Smith’s time here at CSC. “Brad’s done an extraordinary job for the college,” Rhine said Wednesday. “He recently has done a lot of fundraising for the renovation of the Armstrong building and had a lot of success with that.”

Rhine also praised Smith’s 2012 involvement with the selection of former football coach Bill O’Boyle’s replacement.

“He was also involved in the search for a new head football coach last year, which ended up in the hiring of Jay Long, who has done a extraordinary job with the football program,” Rhine said.

Like any employee’s, Smith’s career had its high and low points. Although he racked up multiple accolades during his tenure, the NCAA criticized him in its 2013 report, stemming from football fundraising violations occurring under his leadership as early as 2007.

In the college’s Dec. 21, 2012 report, compiled by Stinson Morrison Hecker LLP in cooperation with NCAA officials, and submitted to the Nebraska State College System’s Board of Trustees, Smith failed in several of his responsibilities as athletics director.

“Specifically, athletic director Smith should have asked questions about what was being done with the funds raised by the LCG tournament and how O’Boyle was financing off-campus trips,” the report states. “If Smith had been monitoring the C Club account and football program’s involvement with concession sales, he would have ensured that the C Club account was closed and that all concession receipts and expenditures were run through the Foundation.”

In response, Rhine filed a written reprimand to Smith for his lack of oversight.

The NCAA postponed CSC’s original Feb. 22 hearing before its Committee on Infractions. As of Wednesday, the NCAA has not rescheduled the hearing, NSCS General Counsel Kristin Petersen stated.

Rhine said he did not know how Smith’s actions would influence any possible NCAA sanctions.

“It’s all speculation right now,” Rhine said Wednesday. “No one knows what the NCAA will decide, but we hope to have the hearing soon.”

Smith said he had been considering retirement “for some time” and that his decision was not influenced by the NCAA investigation. Smith also said that, regardless of his employment status, he would attend the upcoming NCAA hearing.

“I will still be present for the hearing whether someone is found or not,” Smith said Wednesday.

The search for a new replacement is just beginning, Rhine said. “We have not decided how to conduct the search yet, but the committee set up for that will be getting to work shortly,” Rhine said.

“I want to make sure the transition is smooth for the new replacement,” Smith said.

Cowgirls lead team to victory in Wyoming Ashley Swanson Photo Editor Chadron State College students Devan Frey, senior of Hyannis, and Katie Loughran, sophomore of Broken Bow, grabbed first place titles at the Colorado State University rodeo.

The CSC Rodeo team travelled to Fort Collins this past weekend to compete in the Central Rocky Mountain Region Rodeo. Not only did Frey and Loughran place, but also five other members of the team.

The men’s team placed tenth overall with 60 points, while the women’s team placed second overall with a total of 330 points.

Mitch McAdow, senior of Littleton, Colo., and Derek Powers, of Arthur, tied for fifth place in the tie down roping event; McAdow with a time of 9.1 seconds and Powers with a time of 22.6.

Russell Hipke, junior of Stuart, claimed second place in steer wrestling with a time of 10.3 seconds.

Placing in seventh place for team roping heeler, junior of Rapid City, S.D., Jace Blackwell recorded a time of 9.4 seconds.

In the team roping header category, Gabriella Bertagnolli, freshman of Sierra Valley, Calif., placed seventh, also with a time of 9.4 seconds.

Frey competed in breakaway roping, grabbing a time of 6.2 seconds, and placing her in first place over seven other competitors.

Loughran, competing against eight other participants, claimed first place after scoring a time of 28.90 seconds in barrel racing. To prepare for the rodeo, Loughran said she did what she did every week which included riding every day, and practicing barrels.

“We had a really good run; the whole team did,” Loughran said. “I was very happy with a run like that.”

The rodeo team will compete on April 5-7 in Torrington, Wyo. at Eastern Wyoming College in the Central Rocky Mountain Region.

Eagles lose gamble in Vegas tournament Teri Robinson Reporter

The Chadron State Eagles Softball team was on the road to Las Vegas, N.M., this past weekend with a double-header against New Mexico Highlands and Black Hills State.

The team fell short, losing three to two in their first game Friday against the New Mexico Highlands.

The Eagles had a hard time getting runners across the plate. Eight runners were stuck on base, with four in scoring position.

After seven innings, Highlands scored three runs from two home runs. Aryn Grywusiewicz, junior pitcher of Denver, scattered six hits within Highlands batters, but CSC still suffered the loss.

After having a six-game losing run, the Eagles won their second game Friday, 11-0 against Black Hills State. The team’s successful hitting helped with the win, Head Coach Robert Stack said.

“We started out strong and were put in a position to close the game,” Stack said.

which put them in the lead. Katie Londo, junior third baseman of Colorado Springs, Colo., had a 2-run home run while junior of Parker, Colo., Sarah Knudsen added an RBI double.

Breeze Phillips, freshman of Evergreen, Colo., Ashlynn Marino, senior of Fresno, Calif., and Nikki Ritzen, senior of Chadron, helped by hitting players home.

No one scored in the second or third innings but Rebecca Wetsch, sophomore of Erie, Colo., woke the team up with a grand slam in the fourth inning.

On Saturday, the Eagles fell to both teams but had a close fight against Black Hills.

In the first game against Black Hills, Ritzen scored and had two of the four hits of the game. Grywusiewicz let the other team have seven hits and three runs, but still fought hard. The Eagles fell seven to three against New Mexico Highlands in their second game on Saturday.

Londo went four-for-four in the second game. She had an RBI and scored once.

“Win or lose, we learn each time we play,” coach Stack said. “The girls are competing in every single game.”

The team is preparing for their double-header match up against Metro State and Fort Lewis on Saturday.

"CHVRCHES" new EP a hit or miss Spike Jordan Opinion Editor Scottish electropop trio CHVRCHES dropped “Recover,” their new five track EP last Tuesday. The release follows their performance at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, and features three un-released tracks and two remixes of the title track.

While CHVRCHES has been floating on the cusp of several of the blogs that I follow, I never actually committed to giving them a listen until after I saw their live SXSW set on NPR, featuring the track “The Mother We Share.” I had been missing out, and if you have not given CHVRCHES a spin, you have to.

I was so impressed with their performance that I spent last Monday night waiting for the U.S. iTunes release of “Recover.”

Just as I was clicking buy, I noticed the EP did not include any of the singles released thus far, so I was hesitant to follow through. However, my apprehension was quickly melted away by a rather odd feeling.

I felt a pang of guilt; the feeling that sometimes arises when you step up to the record store counter with a CD in your hand. You don’t really feel like buying it, but the clerk's eyes lock on you, and you don’t feel like walking back and throwing it back on the racks. Fashion faux pas are a lady’s best friend Justy Bullington Columnist Yesterday, a friend asked me what my biggest fashion pet peeve was. While many images flashed through my brain, I hesitated to answer. Why you ask? Mostly because I have committed every pet peeve I could think of.

Yes, how hypocritical of me, I know. However, I realized that every fashion faux pas could not only be explained, but justified. So here we go, into the belly of the beast. Yes, that’s right. I’m about to explain the cognitive process of…a woman.

UGG boots and shorts – This simply translates into “I want to show off some leg, but full leg is just too much.” This look simply gives off

a casual, I’m-an-outdoorsy-girl impression.

Don’t believe me? How many times have you braided your hair or simply wore your hair straight with minimal-to-no-make-up with this outfit? Okay then, let’s move on.

On the contrary, the sister outfit to UGG boots and shorts: the riding boots and dress/ skirt outfit has the opposite impression. If you’re wearing riding boots and a dress/ skirt, things are about to get real, real fast. Go change the world, you trendy girl, you.

Sweater and shorts – woman translation: “It’s warm, but not THAT warm.” This outfit simply allows a woman to show off a body part she is proud of, but doesn’t have the desire to freeze all day. No one questions jeans and a tank top and isn’t that the reverse of this questionable outfit selection? That’s like saying you can wear black pants and a white shirt but a black shirt and white pants are unacceptable.

If that’s wrong, I don’t want to be right.

Full make-up and curled hair and sweat-

pants/hoodie combination- woman translation: non-existent. I can’t explain this, nor do I want to. Please don’t do this unless, of course, you just haven’t got dressed yet. In that case, for goodness sakes don’t go to class/outside like this. Ever.

Last, but certainly not least, the everlasting question as to why women may or may not take a guy’s s w e at p a nt s / s h o r t / hoodie collection with no intention of returning such items. I researched for hours trying to explain the reasoning behind such a question. I analyzed multiple possible theories in order to give you the most scientific explanation available.

I researched the possibility that maybe woman take and wear items from men in order to “mark their territory.” This might be a woman’s way of saying “he’s mine so I’d greatly appreciate if you would not speak to him.” However, there were a few holes in this theory…mostly

because it falls under the three Cs category: creepy, crazy, clingy. I researched a few other theories, theories which I won’t share because I feel like you would not only question my credibility, but also my sanity. That’s when it came to me. The eureka moment when I realized the answer had been right in front of me this whole time. If you don’t handle shocking news well, I suggest you casually get up and walk to a place of seclusion to continue reading. Make sure you make it casual, you don’t want people to think your actions are controlled by a column and the “reading voice” inside your head.

The reason women take guy’s sweatpants/ shorts/hoodies is because, wait for it, they’re free and comfortable. Why do woman like free and comfortable things? I don’t know, maybe because we’re human.

If you feel like this week’s column was information overload, I understand. This is pretty heavy stuff. Thus, I hereby grant you the excuse to lie out in the sun, in your shorts and UGGs, and ponder your inner fashion thoughts for the rest of the day.
