CAMPUS ACTIVITIES BOARD

Senate revises constitutions, discusses walk-through results Kelsey Amos Reporter Student Senate gathered for a shorter meeting Monday and revised one of its constitutions.

T.J. Thomson, treasurer, reintroduced the newly revised Senate finance committee constitution that was presented to Senate at its March 28 meeting. Senate approved the changes. Club appeals are today. Seven clubs have requested appeals.

There is $11,832 in Senate’s combined accounts.

Nisha Durand, chief justice, said Student Senate elections are in three weeks. Petitions are due by 5 p.m., Friday.

Cressy Yeutter, Senator of E.H.P.C.P.S.W. and head of the College Affairs Committee, said Shellie Johns, conferencing coordinator, selects potential Galaxy Series events and brings them before CAB, who choose the final acts.

Yeutter also said the committee looked into vegetarian options for students at The Grille and the cafeteria. There are options for vegetarian students; if students want more op-

tions, they have to ask.

Jocelyn Utecht, senator of B.E.A.M.S.S. and Student Affairs Committee chair, said Dr. Hyer is enthusiastic about the changes to the library. He wants to see more faculty using the library, so meetings might be held there. Changes to the library include renovations to the coffee shop, an I.T. desk, new furniture, and outlets near the desks, according to Utecht. The committee also talked to Dr. Randy Rhine about having laundry fees included in housing fees.

Tiffani Roelle, senator of liberal arts, said that the time capsule committee had a meeting Wednesday.

The committee purchased a titanium USB drive to store news articles and video clips of the college; the USB drive will go into the time capsule.

Student interviews were conducted at the 20th Century Party last week.

Faculty interviews will be conducted today. All of these interviews will also go in the time capsule.

Luke Wright, CAB president, said 298 students attended the 20th Century Party on March 29. And on Friday, the band “Monster in the Mirror” took first place in the PR Club’s Battle of the Bands competition.

Wright said CAB approved changes to its constitution and will begin nominations for the reduced number of executive officer positions at its Tuesday meeting. Morgan Nelson, Senate president, said Senate would wait to vote on the changes to CAB’s constitution because the revisions were not submitted by the deadline Senate set.

Senate approved “Amendment 2012-03,” which dealt with future constitutional amendments.

Senate discussed the renovations to the PAC’s floor. Nelson clarified that the Armstrong pool and the PAC renovations are two separate projects with separate funds. James Bahensky, vice president, said that Senate’s agenda included $50,000 that was returned to Senate’s account because Dr. Rhine only requested $50,000 for the PAC. The other $50,000 is coming from other sources.

Senate’s next meeting is set for 5 p.m., April 16. A community service project is planned to precede the meeting at 4 p.m. Senators will be helping Lucinda Mays.

Nelson said student senate elections are planned for 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., April 18-19.

CAB accepts personnel nominations Kelsey Amos Reporter The Campus Activities Board allocated money for free movie and bowling nights, and nominated candidates for its executive board positions Tuesday.

Samantha Evans, treasurer, said the CAB account contains $4,098.

Clubs’ budget appeals are today.

CAB allocated $3,300 for free bowling night and free movie night. Of that money, $1,500 will pay for free bowling, which is April 14, and $1,800 will pay for the free movie event, which is April 15.

CAB members nominated candidates for the executive positions for the 2012-13 year. Last week, members of CAB approved changes to their constitution, which included reducing the number of executive positions to four.

However, Luke Wright, president, said CAB and Senate decided to postpone the changes till the next school year, so the nominations were for the original seven executive board positions.

Wright said nominees for president and vice president have to ap-

ply as a team for the positions. Additionally, they have to have been on CAB for one year. Any other nominees have to have been on CAB for one semester.

Hannah Clark and Brendan Mead were nominated for president and vice president, respectively. Lane Swedberg and Dani Buckley were also nominated for president and vice president, respectively. Kellie Aye was nominated for treasurer.

Heather Wing, Karly Watson, and Sara Labor were nominated for secretary.

Cecilia Sheridan was nominated for publicity coordinator. Erica Misner and Sergio Reyes were nominated for special/cultural and events coordinator. Darren Burrows was nominated for students’ events coordinator.

Any other CAB members who are interested in these positions should submit a letter of intent, listing their qualifications, to Laure Sinn’s office by 5 p.m., April 17. The above nominees also have to submit letters of intent. Nominations will be open for the next two weeks.

Art program expands into industrial, craft art

According to Chris Green, Nelson Physical Activity Center coordinator, the NPACs hours will change due to the Easter weekend holiday. The NPAC will be closed Saturday and Monday. Contributor The Art department is offering a new course to learn how to craft for credits. The three-credit course, Creative Crafts (ART 437), is going to be offered spring semester in Burkhiser. Richard Bird, professor of Visual Arts, is planning on teaching students how to make paper, fashion glass beads, weave from a loom, and create tie-dyed and bateaus fabrics.

Bird taught this class in the early 1990s, but soon found that Memorial Hall was rapidly growing out of space. As a result, the course was discontinued. Due to the Industrial Arts program being shut down, the Burkhiser Building is opening its doors to art classes.

“The students are now using the Burkhiser Building for sculpting class, Bird said.

Bird is in the planning stages of the class. He still has to create the syllabus but has been researching techniques on crafts he plans to teach. The University of Nebraska Kearney donated weaving looms to Chadron State, and Bird is planning to refinish them. “They need to be sanded and stained, and all the nuts and bolts are going to be replaced.” he said. The class also is preparing to make paper out of old jeans by purchasing a beater. The beater will chop up jeans to a fine pulp, where it will then be dried to flat sheets.

Creative Crafts is open for enrollment now.

Bird plans on having the class broken up into small groups doing different crafts. Bird explained this would allow students to learn more crafts because the class will rotate to each craft station. He is enthusiastic to bring the class back for students now there is appropriate space.

Vietnam vet, CSC faculty member to deliver presentation as part of lecture series

In the current Republican presidential primaries, Rick Santorum stands out for his traditionalist views and political positions. Despite major losses in recent primaries, Santorum is carrying on with the race, while keeping social issues like abortion and same-sex marriage as high priorities in his message.

I find it pathetic how much presidential candidates fret about social issues. The economy is still perilous and foreign relations are straining, but as far as people like Rick Santorum are concerned, if we can just get rid of all abortions and keep marriages heterosexual, everything would turn out fine.

I really don’t care what Santorum believes, and I’d say it to his face. Such a belief about homosexuality (and same-sex marriage) is not only wrong, but also immoral. The reason so many people still think homosexuality is evil is because God says so. When it comes to homosexuality it is certainly true, says the Bible, that it is an “abomination,” and the only prescription for that is stoning.

Now I don’t think even Santorum or anyone else would get away with the latter part, but it does show the slight hypocrisy. After all, if one picks a specific verse out of a tribal, superstitious book then you’d think that they’d take all of the verse as true. Such as how disobedient children should be killed; either be consistent or admit that God’s injunctions are immoral.

Most of the focus on homosexuality is rooted, of course, on the sexual aspect, ignoring the fact that sex makes up a tiny fraction of any kind of relationship. Conservatives like Santorum seem so fixated on sex. Stephen Fry once said to think of sex like food, and the only people who are obsessed with food are anorexics or people with bulimia. In sexual terms, this is Santorum and others’ view of sex in a nutshell.

As for his opposition to gay marriage, I see no reason why civil marriage must be denied to two people of the same sex. I have to put emphasis on the word “civil,” which means that it relates to the secular state, not a private church. But that’s not good enough for Santorum, who again is fix-

Anyone who claimed to be a Christian yet thought that gay marriage was right would be questionable in my eyes because they do not even understand their own beliefs.

In my opinion this is an argument that is impossible to resolve though. The amount of freedom in this country that has been created by the Constitution is immense. Someone has to decide what is right and wrong.

So many of our freedoms are voted on by public opinion, and the core values of the public will reflect their choice. Where do we draw the line?

There must be one standard of right and wrong, but anyone can disagree. Arguments that a heterosexual couple make better parents than a homosexual couples and viceversa are always backed up with statistics and studies. The only way to understand Santorum’s views is to look at them from his standards of right and wrong, and then you must decide whether or not his values are accurate. (I do not see abortion as such an impossible issue to resolve as gay marriage though.) Again, Santorum bases this belief from the Bible. In doing so he risks his campaign to take a stand for something that so many people support, but I respect him for that because he’s just in his view on abortion.

People can argue as much as they want over when life begins, but that does not change the fact that there is a potential human life created at conception. Killing a fetus is murdering a potential human being whether or not you believe there is human life from birth. Using an abortion as a solution for the mistakes made by the mother or father is completely selfish.

Some people agree with Santorum on senseless abortions, but they disagree with him for his stance against abortions from rape or incest. But does a rape make the life of that child less of a person? Does that child not deserve life? It is wrong for us to punish an innocent being for someone else’s wrong doing. We try to come up with excuses for doing the things we do, but the main reason is our own selfishness.

Santorum’s views reflect his beliefs and they are valid for the world today.

While doing research for this week’s front-cover story, the design of the Appropriations Committee’s budget recommendations document (top left) told a different story than the words contained inside.

The document referenced the $6.7 million appropriation recommended for CSC’s Armstrong Gymnasium. Accompanying materials published by the committee contained testimony about the negative impression that Armstrong’s condition had on current and prospective students. Yet, for being concerned with appearances, the Appropriations Committee isn’t setting the standard with its own visual image.

In the example at left, the word “Nebraska” is surprisingly not found anywhere on the cover, the kitsch dollar symbol image is pixelated, and the type is all one style and face. The design lacks visual hierarchy, variation, and aesthetic appeal.

Now more than ever, popular culture dictates that the visual appeal is as important as the content itself, and as media theoretician and scholar Marshall McLuhan famously said, “The medium is the message.”

In The Eagle’s 20-minute redesign of the cover, visual subordination is incorporated in the design, an official seal is substituted for the crude symbol, and a simple background augments the balanced design elements.

What can we learn from the Legislature in this instance? People will judge others not only on the substance of their messages, but on the appearance and arrangement of the messages themselves.

The next time you are tempted to try to turn in a hand-written homework assignment or communicate via a hastily-scrawled note, consider what message you are sending.

Design most definitely has a place outside museums.

Dear Editor: The political cartoon you chose to publish in your 3-29-12 edition of the Eagle newspaper is something you would expect to see on the walls of a middle school boy’s bathroom rather than in a newspaper.

As such, your choice to use that cartoon deserves the same respect. Profanity is an effective way to get a reaction, as evidenced by this letter. However, the use of profanity to make a point is both lazy and uneducated.

A Google search revealed an appropriate quote, “When a man uses profanity to support an argument, it indicates that either the man or the argument are weak, probably both.”

Let me introduce you to a concept that may be foreign to you – “shame: a painful emotion caused by the consciousness of guilt, shortcoming, or impropriety.”

Experiencing this concept may help you avoid such an unprofessional act in the future.

Tiffany Valandra Contributor Hearts racing. Anticipation. Nervous excitement. Words of encouragement. Camaraderie. These are some of the words and phrases that could be used to describe the minutes leading up to last Friday evening’s event in Chadron State’s Student Center Ballroom.

An eclectic list of music was performed for the crowd of students and community members that came to the second annual Battle of the Bands event. An evening of cheers, laughs ,and slight mishaps took the stage as six area bands competed for cash prizes.

As a new face to Battle of the Bands, "Monster in the Mirror," of Alliance, rocked their way to the grand prize of $300. Beginning their music career as a cover band in high school, the group drew original influences from bands like Metallica and Pantera. Since 2009, "Monster in the Mirror" has branched out to include ska and classic rock into their repertoire.

“We came, we saw, we came out on top!” rang out on the band’s Facebook page with plenty of “likes” and “congratulations” following the event.

"The Raging Derelicts," of Scottsbluff came in a close second for the evening, going home with $175. As the bands second appearance in

the event, they thought that the event would be bigger this year.

I personally think that the PR Club was given an avocado, a paper towel roll and a quark screw and was asked to make a brick of gold, but they did the best that they could with what they had,” Kyle Sasse, 29, of Scottsbluff, and lead singer of the Derelicts said. “All in all, I had fun.”

The evening’s second runner-up, "Bless Me Ultima," also from Alliance, took home $75.

As last year’s grand prize winners, Bless Me Ultima came into the battle with lots of energy and a crowd all of their own. Donning band Tshirts, the fans came into the Student Center Ballroom and proudly supported their band.

“It was nice to see half of the crowd wearing our new shirts. It means a lot to us.”

Also coming into the battle and making their presence known were "Victory UnderGround," of Ogallala, "Eyes Like A Singularity," of Scottsbluff, and "Bengal Tiger Claw," from a mix of cities in Colorado.

A LEARNING EXPERIENCE Going off of the numbers from last year, the Public Relations Club anticipated a much larger turn out for their event.

“Even though the audience was much smaller this year, it was ok because it wasn’t

as crowded in there [the Student Center Ballroom] this year. The judges were able to capture the essence of the bands,” Virginia Rogers, 26, junior of Chadron and PR Club co-president said. “We’re an all new group this semester, starting from scratch. It was a learning experience and will give us a better idea for next year.”

Battle of the Bands was definitely a learning experience for the Public Relations Club.

Last minute judging cancelations, changes to sound technicians and a lack of crowd numbers gave the PR Club a dose of real-life scenarios for the event planning aspect of PR. awe “I thought that the PR Club did an awesome job overcoming all of the obstacles.

If I didn’t know about [the obstacles], I would never have known. It was all fun,” Luke Wright, 23, senior of Hamlet, said.

Overall, the Public Relations Club did a fairly good job with their event, based on post-event feedback. Positive comments and questions about next year lead the club to believe it should be a continued tradition here at Chad-ron State. Taking what they have learned from this year, it is clear that additional planning, backup plans, time and date consideration, and more local coverage are a necessity for making this a popular event, Rogers said.

The PR Club raised $135 at the door through admission sales. The club also fundraised by selling custom T-shirts.

Numbers Approximately 125 students and community members filled the Ballroom to enjoy different music styles. Of those, roughly 33 were community members, and the remainder were CSC students.

Bands Six bands competed for the top three cash prizes. Each different band brought something new to the stage including country, rock, heavy metal, and screamo. The winners, "Monster in the Mirror," "The Raging Derelicts," and "Bless Me Ultima," focused on rock or screamo music. The PR Club is expecting more bands for next year's event.

Rodeo Events: Steer Wrestling, Team Roping Year: Sophomore Hometown: Stuart Hipke won the steer wrestling event with a time of 5.3 seconds on Sunday in Fort Collins, Colo.

Rodeo team coach Dustin Luper is optimistic for the Chadron State College rodeo team. With a number of cowboys and cowgirls on the CSC rodeo team being ranked regionally, it seems likely that they’ll add up another string of top 10 placer-holders to their spring season and opportunities for filling slots for nationals.

According to Luper, the women’s team needs just shy of 600 points to make it to nationals.

“We have three rodeos left, and that’s a lot of time and opportunities for us to rack up enough points. I keep telling them ‘the fat lady hasn’t even begun to sing yet’.”

Looking at the team’s stellar performance at the CSU rodeo, it’s easy to understand Luper’s optimism. The Eagles moved on from the Friday and Saturday go-rounds into the finals on Sunday with sixteen entries placing within the top 10.

Senior Kelsey Scott of Douglas, Wyo., won two events en route to capturing the all-around cowgirl title and securing a win for the women’s team. At the end of the first go-round in breakaway roping, Scott was in a three-way tie for last, posting a run of 3.5 seconds at the end of the first go-round. But she bounced back in the second round, posting a 2.5-second run that earned her the title.

THURSDAY, APRIL 5, 2012 Her second win came in team roping. She and her partner Matt Schieck of Sheridan College posted times of 6.5 seconds and 7.2 seconds in the first and second go-rounds respectively, winning each and capturing the average.

Sophomore Russel Hipke of Stuart won the steer wrestling event, finishing sixth in the first go-round with a 5.5-second run, and first in the final round with a 5.3-second run to win the average.

After the first go, two CSC cowboys, Tyrell Bonnet of Newell, S.D., and Clint Lambrecht of Wood River, posted the two fastest times in the steer wrestling event, but each cowboy posted no times in the final round.

Bonnet led the first go, tossing his steer in 3.9 seconds. Lambrecht finished in second place, a half-second behind Bonnet, tossing his draw in 4.4 seconds.

Broken Bow freshman Katie Loughran had a good day.

She made a poor run in the first go, then posted the event’s fastest run, finished second in the average, and placed in her first college rodeo.

After a 14.51-second trip around the cloverleaf in the first go, she shaved nearly half-asecond off her time in the second round, posting a 14.03-second run that earned her second place.

Senior Kaylee Gallino of Wasta, S.D., who took first in the Gillette rodeo two weeks ago, also placed in barrels, taking first in her the opening go-round with 14.20 seconds, and fourth in finals in 14.53 seconds, to finish third overall.

Heading into Easter weekend the CSC rodeo team will hit the trail to Torrington, Wyo. for the Eastern Wyoming College rodeo from April 5-7.

After a 5-25 (0-18 RMAC) 2011 season, the Eagles are hitting the gym with one thing in mind: improvement.

“They’ve been lifting at 6 a.m., three days a week since the beginning of spring semester,” head coach Natasha Marquis said in an interview yesterday. “It’s been a grind.”

The team has also taken part in 14 of the 20 practices allowed by the NCAA during the offseason, Marquis said.

She believes the workout regimen will pay off next semester.

“You’ve gotta push through the uncomfortable things,” Marquis said. “That’s an aspect of mental toughness that will serve us well in the fall.”

In addition to the practice schedule, the team has taken part in scrimmages and exhibition games with other schools. On March 24, the team practiced and competed with Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff.

Last weekend, the team visited Spearfish, S.D., for exhibition games against South Dakota State University, Black Hills State University and South Dakota School of Mines.

Marquis said the games provided the whole team with on-court experience.

“We’re working on maturing as players, and experience is the best way to do that,” she said.

Marquis said the team has “come a long way from a year ago” but that there is still room for improvement.

“We can do a lot of really good things physically, it’s just a matter of getting it to translate on the court,” she said.

Next year’s team will probably feature a lot of returning players; only one player, Kaitlin Luikens of Scottsbluff, is graduating.

NCAA volleyball programs can begin signing recruits on April 11.

“Court time could be anyone’s in the fall,” Marquis said, “We’ve got a lot of good recruits coming in, and you don’t return to a team that went and expect a starting spot. I hope the competition encourages [the players].”

Kevan Carr Reporter The Eagles had a decent outcome over the weekend against Colorado Mesa University, winning two of four games. Saturday, the ladies lost the first competition 12-6 to the Mavericks but, rallied to pull off a 4-2 victory in the second. On Sunday, the team repeated the performance by winning the first 5-3 only to lose 6-5 in the second.

Amy Schartz, junior of Brady, hit her fourth walk-off home run of the season to seal victory in the second game Sunday.

Katie Londo, sophomore of Colorado Springs, Colo., got three hits in four at-bats, including a double and a home run, to drive in four runs in the first game Saturday.

Londo performed outstandingly again on Sunday’s first game, pounding out her ninth home run of the season for two runs, leading the Eagles to a victory early in the day. Despite the momentum, the ladies couldn’t keep the force going and lost to Mesa in the second due to some costly errors.

Following the weekend’s results, the CSC ladies now sit third from last in the standings with a 13-22 overall record and an 1115 in the RMAC. The Eagles go on the road this weekend to face Nebraska-Kearney in a double-header both Saturday April 6, starting at noon, and Sunday April 7, starting at 11 a.m.

Rugby: a team sport for anyone Reporter

With a genuine smile and energetic personality, Allyn Lieck, 20, sophomore of Broken Bow, started to describe how her interests in football, though she was not able to play in her earlier years, eventually led her to join CSC’s rugby team. Though she did not join the team her first year at CSC, now in her second year she is part of the team along with approximately 15 other girls who practice and play.

“It’s kind of a difficult question,” Lieck said when asked what one word she would use to describe rugby. “To explain rugby in one word is rugby.”

“There’s not really anything else like it ‘cause when you play rugby, you’re out on the field and running as fast as you can and hitting as hard as you can.”

“You’re out there to win,” she said. “It’s not us versus them, it’s not us and them as teams, there’s rugby players and non rugby players.”

It’s difficult not to get hurt in rugby when you’re falling to the ground and getting dog piled

for a large, football shaped ball.

According to Lieck, this makes it challenging for recruiting new members of the girls’ rugby club, because it seems to be a genuine consensus among girls on campus that getting hit is bad. “It’s really difficult; I’m not going to lie,” she said.

Around campus, the team advertises the fun parts of rugby in order to attract new members, but getting hurt is part of the game. “Yes, we run and get knocked down, but it’s fun.” Lieck said. “Besides, bruises are temporary and blood makes the grass grow.”

As part of the team, members are given the chance to play against multiple colleges and meet a lot of other people. “It’s a great team,” Lieck said. With no coach because the team is a club rather than college sponsored activity, the club members manage everything themselves. However, they often work with the Wayne State team and their coach.

“Having a coach would be nice but all things considered, we do pretty well,” Lieck said. “[This is the] best team experience I could ever hope for,” Lieck said, grinning.

Women’s journeys detailed in art show Kelsey Amos Reporter Artist Paula Giovanni-Morris explores women’s journeys through her embroideries and beaded Soumak tapestries which are currently on display in the upstairs gallery at Memorial Hall. The thirteen pieces, which glow with vivid colors and beads, mostly explore women’s lives and journeys.

“Day Tripping,” a Soumak tapestry that Morris created in 1991, shows a desert that is reminiscent of Arizona.

A road snakes its way across the desert to the horizon, where a big yellow sun sets behind the red and brown hills. This could be the sunset that the proverbial cowboy rides off into.

A saguaro cactus stands like

a sentinel that guards the desert.

Another piece about journeys, “Return to Oz,” is another Soumak tapestry from 1993. In this miniature tapestry, a small black dog gazes up a yellow road to an emerald city on the horizon.

Finally, “The Journey Home,” a Soumak tapestry from 1996, shows a woman with flowing blond hair walking on a road toward a house on the horizon. In these pieces, the objects of desire are always out of reach on the horizon, close enough to see but not close enough to touch.

Most of the remaining pieces focus on women’s lives. “Five Sisters,” an embroidered piece from 1999, shows the silhouettes of five women, with the titles “gorgeous,” “genius,” “bad girl,” “actress,” and “princess.” Each of the women’s faces are beaded, half one color and half another. This piece appears to explore the different facets of women’s personalities.

The “Mask of Friendship,” another collage, appears to explore the dilemma of whether men and women can be “just friends.” The

collage includes men and women in pairs, a set of scales with a heart on one end, and phallic imagery.

This piece asks a question that humans have pondered for centuries.

“Shattered,” a 2005 embroidery, shows a woman’s face that is shattered into multiple faces with many eyes and mouths. The border of the piece is composed of shards of a mirror, which viewers can see their own distorted faces in. “My Mother, I Am,” a 2011 embroidery, shows a woman’s face that is split down the middle. An older woman’s face, presumably her mother’s, can be seen looking out.

Some of the artwork is unrelated to the other pieces. “Windows and Doors,” an embroidered piece from 2012, shows the profile of a head that is surrounded by knotted neurons. The individual’s brain can be seen through the skull, but instead of gray matter, doors are visible. The eyes might be the windows to the soul, but this piece shows that the mind is the door.

The exhibit is located in Memorial Hall Gallery 239 and will remain open until tomorrow.
