Construction crew continues working on the Eagle Ridge Apartments east of campus this past Monday, to complete them before classes begin.

Campus construction nears completion Eagle Ridge Apartments construction is coming to a close as CSC prepares for another semester Eagle Ridge Apartments are in the final touches of the year-long construction process, but will be open by class time, Construction Supervisor Brian Anderson, said Tuesday.

“A and B [buildings] are pretty much complete,” he said. “C needs flooring and painting and a punch list items.”

Anderson said the three buildings have

been passed with electrical circuits, and the fire marshal walked through the buildings Tuesday for inspection. In each building there are four rooms to each six units—24 rooms in all.

Besides the final touches of paint and flooring, construction members are finishing up leveling the dirt. Landscaping will follow when that is complete.

Helmbrecht pulls double duty as PR director, SID Janelle Kesterson Lifestyles Editor Alex Helmbrecht, former sports information director of Chadron State College, is now the director of college relations as of July 1.

Helmbrecht’s position as director of college relations entails that he acts as the head spokesperson for CSC. He is responsible for managing CSC’s public relations staff, and is also the managing editor for the news flow out of CSC. As of right now, there will not be a replacement for the position of sports information director, Helmbrecht said. However, with the help of a part -time student, he will continue to handle the responsibilities of his previous position. There are plans to fill the position in the future.

When Helmbrecht was sports information director he was in charge of managing only students.

Helmbrecht’s responsibilities will expand to include

not only managing students but also all of CSC’s public relations staff.

“Sports information is deadline driven. There is a strong mentality of having to be timely and accurate,” he said. “I want to carry this mentality over into my position as director of college relations.”

Helmbrecht also said he wants to make the information relatable to the college staff and students to help them feel closer to what is happening around the college.

He plans to do what is best for CSC and aims to be Helmbrecht as transparent as possible.

He also wants to be the liaison between the different sectors of CSC’s campus.

As far as the roles of this new position, Helmbrecht has no immediate changes planned for the department.

Using their new IDs, students can access dormitories with the advanced fob system, which begins this semester.

New student IDs, fob system installed in dormitories Out with the old and in with the new—a key fob system that is. Familiar to returning students, the former FOB system had students access to their dorms using a small device given to them at the beginning of the semester. This year, students will be able to access entry into their dorms using newly implemented IDs. Returning students will not be able to access their dorms with their current ids, but instead must go to the conference office for a new ID. “The cards will be used to get into dorms and facilities they’re supposed

to go into for classes, and the PAC,” Conferencing Office Assistant Joyce Grimm, said Tuesday.

Grimm also said for students and staff who do not have meal plans, they can go to the business office and add money to their card. The money on the card can be used to purchase meals at the cafeteria and Grille.

“Staff and students need to have their cards with them at all times for the different activities and events,” she said. “Security will be asking for IDs, and if they [students] don’t have an ID they can’t get in.”

Give everything for the love of sport Jordyn Hulinsky Sports Editor

“

Find something you love, and go after it, with all your heart,” Jim Abbott stated on his website. A baseball pitcher turned motivational speaker, Abbott was born without his right hand.

He was before my time in baseball, but after watching videos of his playing, I can tell you he loved the game and was thankful for every opportunity he had in baseball. I respect him for having that kind of attitude.

One of my biggest pet peeves is playing sports with people or watching other athletes who act like they don’t want to be playing, and the intensity of that pet peeve was magnified after my summer.

The week of my 15-year-old brother Jarred’s first baseball game he was involved in a table saw accident at school. He ended up losing one of his three cut fingers and the other two needed, and still need, intense physical therapy to get them back in working condition.

My brother Jarred loves baseball more than I think he loves me most of the time, so the fact that his sport was taken away from him in a matter of seconds really made it clear to me that sports are a special gift granted to a select few who get to play them, and because they are a gift, you should treasure them and respect them enough to play your heart out every time

you get the chance.

My senior year of high school, my softball coach printed off a paragraph my injured teammate found, and it stuck with me since the first time I read it. It reads, “Don’t take the sport you play for granted.

Every time you play, you better be damn thankful that you get to do something you love. Don’t show up to practice complaining about not wanting to be there; you’re there hopefully because you love it. Work hard every moment. If you’re not working hard, you don’t deserve to play. Play every practice or game like it’s your last because it very well could be. When you finally reach the day that you can’t play, and you can only watch, then you will know how much you love something that you once took for granted.”

This really hit home for me while I was watching Jarred sitting in the dugout all summer. Sports define my brother in many ways, and he wanted more than anything to play ball this summer and he couldn’t.

Sadly, that was not the worst part of the summer. The worst part was when my best friend’s 21-year-old brother, Derek, died in a car accident at no fault of his own. He was a guy who lived his life by that paragraph quote. Derek lived everyday like it was his last and made sure everyone around him was cared for and loved. Derek was a volunteer wrestling coach at high school, and he helped coach my brother from his very first match. Derek loved what he did and you could see it in the way

he carried himself on the mat. Knowing that he could be done coaching after any match, Derek poured his heart and soul into every second and that made him fun to watch. When someone’s passion is like that, it’s contagious and makes you more interested. What you learn in sports can be applied to real life situations, Derek made that clear to me.

With the new sports season beginning soon, I just ask that athletes think about why they are actually playing sports. They should be fun. Athletes should love what they do. And whether you are at the collegiate level, intramural level, or even just playing for fun with your friends, remember you are blessed with the ability to play because not everyone is, and remember, nothing lasts forever.

So play every throw, every pass, every kick, every score, every point, every touchdown, every home run like it’s your last because it very well could be. Don’t take the game you play for granted.

Kevin Lindholm (2009-12): The RMAC Defensive Player of the Year and a first team All-American in 2012; he was named to the RMAC All-Conference First Team and the All-Nebraska team three-straight years from 2010 to 2012; finished his career with 299 tackles, including 37 for a loss.

DEFENSIVE BACK: Mitch Barry (2001-04): A talented cornerback and returner; he earned All-RMAC honors three times and was All-Nebraska twice; he finished his career with 149 tackles and 11 interceptions that he returned for 199 yards; he also broke up 31 passes and averaged 11.2 yards on 89 punt returns during his career.

Randy Bauer (1971-73): Still owns the record for most interceptions in a season with 10; he finished his career with 129 tackles and a then school record 16 picks; he also broke up 27 passes; named all-district and was an Academic All-American; elected to the CSC Hall of Fame in 1994.

Cody Gamble (1991-94): Earned AllRMAC and All-Nebraska accolades three consecutive years; he’s tied with Marvin Jackson for the most career interceptions (21); he returned two of those picks for TDs; he also broke up 24 passes and had 176 tackles; elected to the CSC Hall of Fame in 2009.

Marvin Jackson (2000-03): One of the most decorated Eagles in history; he was a two-time All-American (2002-03) and was a first-team choice four times; he is one of only a handful of players to earn First Team AllRMAC honors four consecutive years and he was the RMAC Player of the Year in 2002; he finished his career with 21 interceptions, tied for the most in school history; his other records include most interception return yards (354), interception TDs (4) and pass breakups

(36); he also had 188 career tackles.

Paul Schweger (2004-07): He was the quarterback of the defense for some of the Eagles’ finest teams in 2006 and 2007; he paced CSC in tackles three times and finished with 289 stops in his career; he also had eight interceptions and forced five fumbles; he was a two-time choice to the All-RMAC First Team and All-Nebraska three times.

Trelan Taylor (2010-13): A four-year starter at safety, Taylor had a fine career for the Eagles; he finished with 188 tackles and 12 interceptions, including one he returned for a TD; he was a first team All-American and named to the All-RMAC team two times and the All-Nebraska team three times.

Ken Thompson (1979-81): He’s been long regarded as one of the Eagles’ best baseball players but he also was a great football player; he finished with 215 career tackles and 16 interceptions, despite playing only three years; three of his interceptions resulted in touchdowns and he broke up 20 passes; elected to the CSC Hall of Fame in 2000.

Ryan Turman (1995-98): A hard-hitting safety who accumulated 319 tackles during his All-American career; he was a three-time AllRMAC and All-Nebraska first team choice; he also had 19 interceptions—he returned four for TDs—and 29 passes defended; he led the Eagles in tackles and interceptions three-straight years; elected to the CSC Hall of Fame in 2013.

PUNT RETURNER: Bill Ryan (1975-78): He averaged 10.6 yards on 50 punt returns in the mid-70s; he still owns the school record for most punt return TDs (2); he was an honorable mention All-American selection and named all-district twice; at wide receiver, he had 134 receptions for 2,134 yards and 19 TDs; he also lettered in track and field and tennis at Chadron State; elected to the CSC Hall of Fame in 1999.

Micah Smith (2004-07): He owns the school record for highest punt return average in a season (17.37) and a career (17.7); he had 622 punt return yards on just 35 returns and

scored one touchdown; he was also a talented years; he averaged a school record 40.83 yards receiver for the Eagles and had 25 receptions per punt; he’s second all-time in punt yards for 380 yards and three TDs. Ben Puffer (2006-09): Another dominant lineman; he was tabbed by the RMAC’s AllConference First Team three years and earned All-Nebraska in 2008 and 2009.

Layne Sievers (2001-04): He was named an All-American his senior season in 2004; he was also a three-time All-RMAC choice and twice named All-Nebraska.

J.C. Sollars (1947-50): He was named the best offensive lineman of the year by the Nebraska College Conference his senior season; he started 37 consecutive games for the Eagles and earned all-conference honors four-straight years; elected to the CSC Hall of Fame in 1983.

Clinton Smith (1921-25): A two-time allconference choice at center for the Eagles; he was also the captain of the 1925 squad that upended the University of Colorado; Smith is also credited for providing the Eagles their mascot; he had a pet eagle he took to Chadron games when he was a boy and fans eventually began calling Chadron State “the Eagles;” elected to the CSC Hall of Fame in 1983.

Lonnie Wickard (1957-58): One of the toughest players in CSC annals; he was the quarterback of the single wing the undefeated 1958 team employed and also started at linebacker; he was named all-conference first team at linebacker and he was second team at quarterback following the season; he threw for just 575 yards but often served as the lead blocker; he was inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame in 2000; elected to the CSC Hall of Fame in 1984.
