Dear Students, On behalf of Chadron State College, welcome to the beginning of a new academic year to all our new students!

Helping to prepare you for the next phase of your life is our goal. From admission to graduation, helping you develop into the individuals who will shape the future of this state, country, and beyond is an extraordinary opportunity. In addition, I would like to thank the Eagle staff for all their dedication and effort to produce this special edition of The Eagle for the beginning of the fall semester.

The start of the fall semester is always and exciting time, full of change and promise. This year is no exception. Beginning this fall, all new students will enroll in one of many new courses created by the Chadron State Faculty called, First Year Inquiry Courses. These courses are designed to be interdisciplinary in nature and integrate Rhine content with critical thinking, reading, and writing skills. The courses will be team taught by the faculty and are designed to capture the imagination of students and engage them in the learning process.

As the academic year begins I would like you to do a couple of things, and these apply equally to new or continuing students. Contact your academic dean, program chair, or the START office in Crites Hall and ask which faculty member is your academic advisor. Schedule an office visit and meet with your academic advisor. Throughout your academic career with Chadron State this person will be invaluable to you. If you have questions about your program, academic policies, course selection, degree requirements, employment opportunities after graduation or any number of other questions, your academic advisor is the best resource for guidance.

Seek out the assistance of the Learning Center located in Gold Room adjacent to the High-rise residence hall on the south side of the building. The services provided through this unit are designed to help students of all ability levels achieve their full potential. They provide subject specific tutoring as well as assistance with writing and speaking projects. Take advantage of these services.

If you have difficulty logging into any of these accounts, please contact the IT help desk at 432-6311 (7:30 a.m.–7:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Friday).

• Protect your accounts. Be sure to log off of your CSC account on lab computers and all other accounts.

• Check your CSC EagleMail account frequently.

• Downloading copyrighted files? Make sure you have the right to do so! CSC disconnects computers reported by the RIAA. • Use the wired port in your residence hall room if the wireless access is slow. The wired ports are faster, more reliable & secure.

• Be Green! Minimize printing and copying in labs!

• Copies can be made on Canon copiers in the Library Lab and High Rise lab. Copies are paid for by you through your technology fee fund.

• Protect your computer and the campus network by keeping your operating system and anti-virus software up to date. This is a requirement to connect to the campus network.

• Scan your computer regularly with antivirus software. Infected devices will lose their connection.

• When on campus, students connect to the campus wireless network labeled “CSC”.

• You can register up to 3 devices including your desktop, laptop, tablet, or Smartphone on the campus network.

• Stay connected but not via non-CSC routers, wireless or otherwise. Personal routers and wireless access points are not allowed on the campus network.

Track at Chadron State began in the early 1920s. Its athletes have gained All-American honors over 100 times since 1980.

Wrestling began in 1958-59. The Eagles finished 11th at the 2009 national tournament and have had three national champions the past three seasons. The wrestlers also reached major milestones in 1983-84, 1984-85, 1986-87 and 1991-92 by winning NAIA Area Tourney titles. The wrestlers won both the RMAC and the West Region championships in 1995 and were the conference dual champs in 2000-01. CSC wrestlers have been All-Americans over 40 times.

Women’s athletics was introduced at CSC in the 1970s and plays an important role in the CSC sports program. The CSC volleyball teams have had 20 winning seasons.

Track and Field is a very popular sport at CSC. Several female athletes have gained NCAA II All American status.

The women’s basketball team had 18-9 records in 1992-93 and ‘93-’94 and then went 22-8 in 1994-95 and won a share of the RMAC championship for the second time in three years. The 1999-2000 team won 20 games and 2000-01 team won 19.

The Eagles won the conference tourney in 1994-95 and advanced to the NCAA II Playoffs.

Women’s golf was introduced in 1991 and softball was revived in 2007, after a 25-year hiatus.

In addition, men’s and women’s cross country was added for this fall 2012.

College upgrades NPAC floor, sets intramural schedule The Nelson Physical Activities Center (NPAC) has a wide variety of equipment ranging from treadmills, ellipticals, exercise bikes, stability balls, cable-assisted series machines, weight benches, power racks with platforms, dumbbells, and a dual-cable crossover machine. There are also resistance bands, weight belts, jump ropes and other equipment that you can check out at the front desk with your CSC or NPAC ID. In addition, there are also basketballs, volleyballs, indoor soccer balls, racquetball racquets and balls, workout DVDs, and many other items for check out at the front desk.

The NPAC also includes a dance/ aerobics room with a hard wood floor that features a big screen TV and DVD player for other fitness opportunities. Considering the popularity of P90X and Insanity right now, the NPAC is the place to be when working out with friends. Please stop by the NPAC front desk and reserve a spot in the dance room.

One thing we are all excited

about in the NPAC is the new indoor track floor we had installed this summer. The new surface is going to be very beneficial not only to our indoor track and field team but also for intramural sports and for the HPER classes that take place in the NPAC Arena. The floor features two smooth spikeproof surfaces, one semi-rough surface and the traditional track surface.

As always, the NPAC will be closed during all home CSC Athletics Contests. There are only four home football games and one wresting dual this fall so the building should be open much more than in the past, due to the lesser amount of contests in the fall semester.

Some of the intramurals opportunities that we are offering this fall are flag football (men’s and co-rec divisions), volleyball (women’s and co-rec divisions), a dodgeball tournament (co-rec division ONLY), 3 vs. 3 basketball tournament (men’s and women’s Divisions), and fantasy football.

The Student Senate is the primary student government organization on campus. The body exists as a representative arm of the student body, and, according to its mission statement, seeks to "provide a forum for the expression of student views and interests; to be the 'voice' of the student body; to improve

student cultural and social welfare; [and] to ensure the continued existence of student's rights, both in principle and in practice."

Student Senate meets weekly at 5 p.m.; its primary committee, the Campus Activities Board, meets Tuesdays at 6 p.m. Both organizations meet in

the Student Center's Scottsbluff Room.

Representatives from The Eagle attend both meetings each week and report newsworthy items in our "News" section each week.

Senate president challenges students to be ‘more’ Hello everyone, and welcome to Chadron State College! My name is James Bahensky, and I am the Student Association president.

As we begin a new year, I would like to encourage and challenge you to be something more.

By being active you can affect major changes on campus. Over the past several years, Student Senate, with comments collected from the student body, has worked with school administration to accomplish the following: • Improve technology across campus • Renovate the weight/cardio room and arena in the NPAC • Improve workout facilities in the basement of High Rise • Improve food quality and variety through dining services • Update equipment in the Student Center among various other projects Get involved in these and other campus decisions through student government, or support our athletic teams and fine arts (they are pre-paid after all), and be active in other school activities. Don’t be the bum

who sits at his computer complaining on Facebook about how bad the food is in the café. Be proactive and go to Student Senate (Mondays at 5 p.m. in the Student Center).

Believe me, for those of us who have been here long enough, we have seen worse and it has improved considerably!

Being acquainted to campus, I feel obligated to offer you the first lecture of your academic career, free of charge. While I may not be the oldest and most certainly not the wisest person here, I believe I can lend you some advice that will help you prosper at Chadron State.

• First and foremost, go to class. As many of our peers will tell you, some days it is easier said than done. On our coldest days we can see temperatures as low as -33 degrees, making the walk to class even more avoidable.

• Which brings me to my second helpful hint, buy, beg, or borrow a heavy winter coat.

• Third on the list, join a student organization. The best way to get involved and meet people that share the same interests as you

is to apply your talents to a campus group.

We have several organizations on campus that provide fun and many that offer professional advancement: Outdoor Adventure, Wildlife, Health Professions, Criminal Justice, and Student Senate, just to name a few.

• If clubs aren’t your thing, get off campus and explore the surrounding area. Several scenic destinations are within a few hours’ drive of Chadron including Chimney Rock, Toadstool Park, Fort Robinson, the Badlands, Mount Rushmore, and Sylvan Lake.

• Before you spend all of your change on gas and fast food, save all of the quarters you can find in your pockets, car, or couch cushions. Laundry piles up quickly so having a hefty supply of quarters, or a good friend with a washer and dryer comes in handy.

• To wrap up, remember to seek help when you need it, know that when one door closes another one is sure to open, and last, but most certainly not least, remember to thank everyone you meet who helps you out along the way.

Welcome new Chadron State College students, and welcome back to everyone.

My name is Chris Hughes. I am a police officer with the Chadron Police Department. I am also CSC's Campus Resource Officer (CRO). I am here to help keep college life on campus as safe and enjoyable as possible. But, remember I am available for more than law enforcement issues on campus. I am also here to help with many different things, from something as simple as providing a reference to a paper, to being a person you can talk over issues with you may not feel comfortable talking with anyone else about.

As this is a special early edition of the Eagle, I would like to offer some tips to keep you and your personal property safe on and off campus.

1. Always lock your dorm room and your car. Take away the temptation for someone to take your stuff.

2. Never go walking or running alone at night. Always take at least one friend, and let someone know where you’re going and how long you will take. Remember to wear bright or reflective clothing.

3. If you go to a party, go with a friend. Always know where you are going and tell someone where you’re going.

4. Don’t drink alcohol under the age of 21.

5. NEVER drink and drive. ALWAYS have a designated driver, make sure they don’t drink any alcohol, not even one or two. If you don’t have a driver, call for a ride from a sober friend. The Chadron Police Department will give rides, if officers are available.

6. Remember it is possible for crime to happen on campus. Crimes from thefts to personal crimes have been reported on campus.

A physician’s assistant and the CSC Nurse staff the clinic, and there is no office visit charge to see the PA. We also have common lab tests such as Strep, Mono, UA dip, among others, at no charge. NEW IMMUNIZATION RECOMMENDATIONS: If you have never had Chickenpox and have had one vaccination against Chickenpox (Varicella) a booster dose is recommended in order to make sure you are protected.

If you had a Meningococcal vaccination before you were 16 years old a booster dose is recommended if you are not over 21 years old.

The Chadron State Eagles football team has an interesting season ahead of them this fall. Unlike most seasons, they will only play four home games at CSC this semester. Additionally, they will be coached by new head coach Jay Long. Long is a CSC graduate and former Eagle football player. At center, he was a two-time RMAC selection and that love for playing has carried over to his coaching.

“I am excited to coach where I have played and keep the strength of the Eagles football program going,” Long said. The Eagles have won eight RMAC Championships, with the last victory in 2008, when Chadron went 11-2 overall.

Long also has some significant talent he knows he can count on. “Kevin Lindholm and Garret Gilkey are key assets to the team’s success with their experience and knowledge of the game,” Long said.

Kevin Lindholm, senior linebacker from Eads, Colo., carries many honors. He was recently named a 2012 preseason All-American and is also a two-time RMAC First Team choice.

When asked if the coaching change will affect this upcoming season, Lindholm knew the answer was no.

“Since Coach Long played under Coach O’Boyle, his coaching styles had a lot of similarities and made the transition very easy,” Lindholm said.

Garret Gilkey, senior left offensive tackle from Sandwich, Ill., had some different feelings towards the new coaching change. “When I heard O’Boyle’s contract wasn’t being renewed I was in shock,” Gilkey said. “My loyalty to him is incomprehensible to most people. In all honesty, Long has made this transition as smooth as it could be. He’s a great coach who is passionate about his players and what he does.”

Another new change is the lack of games played in Chadron. The Eagles will travel for six games, while playing on Elliot field for only four. Some of the long bus rides can affect players and their mental state for the games, but Long is not worried.

“When I played, I loved road trips because you got to hang with your friends and share that time in a controlled environment. I think it will be good for our boys,” Long said.

Both Lindholm and Gilkey do not see a problem with the road trips, but know that attendance will be hard for Chadron fans. “We will be fine,” Gilkey said. “Our motivation isn’t in where we play, it’s in who we are.”

The team’s season opener will be Aug. 30 against Montana State University in Bozeman, Mont. Kick-off is set for 7:05 p.m.

Punk music is dead. Long live punk

Robert Jordan Reporter I identify myself as a purist when it comes to punk, so I’m at odds with the misnomer that is “hardcore”. What happened to the shape of punk, and how did we progress to this saddening point? What strikes my thoughts are prophetic words spoken over a decade ago by Dennis Lyxzén, lead singer of Swedish hardcore pioneers “Refused”: “Popular Music, and music as a culture needs to die. We can no longer put our trust in those icons and those fallen heroes . . . We are increased class depressors on their bourgeois dream of a good job.”

The reason I dredge these words from the bottom of time’s stream are relevant: over the summer Refused reunited, touring for the first time since disbanding in 1998. After premiering at Coachella, Refused went on to play shows across the United States with Ex-Black Flag singer Keith Morris’ band, “OFF!” I wish I could have made one of the tour

dates, but instead my punk holiday was interrupted by the summer routine of ranch work.

As the drones of mower blades and bellowing of cattle echoed, it reverberated against Lyxzén’s words in my head. The fallen heroes and icons are an irremovable archetype of what punk is. In the absence of that faith, who are we left to trust?

The next generation of punk seems dependent on the cult of fashion, framed by swooping haircuts and flowery sleeve tattoos, while its acolytes flail around clad in their sister’s pants. I imagine skinny jeans cause a loss of circulation to the lower extremities, given most hardcore vocalist’s tendencies to whine lyrics, sounding as if they’re pained in the posterior. It’s one thing to scream and be angry, but it baffles me how the standard evolution of punk has transformed into feigned aggression and exhibitions by saccharine sweet imitations. The air surrounding the current hardcore scene, to include the entire fledgling –core subgenre, is one of carbon copy. Scream -chorus-scream-chorus-breakdown- chorusoutro. Stock music for stock people, a bourgeois dream if there has ever been one.

I realize the irony is that punk was never all that “original”. You can find evidence in the snappy pop sounds of The Ramones’ “threechord-assault”, which was recycled over and

over and over. But there was something behind the Ramones. While having a zany surfrock allure that was commercially viable, the Ramones’ lyrics carried darker tones and reflected an aggressive attitude. But maybe my mentality is wrong, maybe I’m the one who’s lost the plot.

In my isolation, I’ve turned into the punk rock equivalent of Newt Gingrich; nostalgic about a non-existent era, a time when a bunch of punks screaming actually meant something.

Or maybe it’s just envy stemming from my never ending search for a pair of pants that fit.

But I know that’s not the case. With the recession and wars, coupled with continued social injustice and police brutality, there’s no shortage of Kasbahs needing rocked, and there’s still plenty to be angry about. It’s not simply about maintaining the status quo of spiky hairdos and patch covered clothing.

In environments past, punk spawned violently from political and social discontent mixed with the jaded cynicism of music industry standards. Punk was able to thrive throughout the Evil Empire and the Cold War, and as the anarchists started getting old; grunge took the torch and carried forth, until it too petered out.

Punk’s survival hinged on the necessity of things being said, but if “the medium is the message” as Marshall McLuhan once stated, hardcore is left ringing emptily in deaf ears.

A glimpse into the past . . .

Exercise equipment and kitchens added to High Rise – Sept. 13, 2001 – For the last four months, renovations have been made to the fifth and eighth floors of High Rise, as well as adding exercise equipment to the basement. After a coat of fresh paint, maintenance crews began working on moving equipment in including two elliptical gliders, two stationary bikes, two stair-climbers, and one treadmill. New kitchen utensils, pots, pans, electric mixers, and cleaning supplies were added to each kitchen; a couple of tables and chairs were also included.
