Coffee shop opens, brews interest with students, faculty Sarah Townsend Reporter Students looking for a quick pick-me-up can now stop in the new coffee shop located in the Library Learning Center. The Reta King Library and Chadron State Dining Services have joined together to provide this new addition to the campus for students to use while in the Learning Center.

The coffee shop is located on the main floor of the library. The shop is open Monday-Thursday 7 a.m.-1:30 p.m., 5-8 p.m., and Friday 7-11 a.m.

There are many beverage options to choose from, including both hot and cold drinks. The main focus is the Virtu machine that grinds fresh LaRue coffee for patrons. A different sandwich and salad will be available daily and an assortment of snacks.

Payment options for students include either cash or EagleBucks. Students will not be able to use their meal plan to pay for items.

A credit card machine will be available for use later on.

The coffee shop was a project constructed by the CSC maintenance staff over the 2014 summer months.

Jon Hansen, vice president of enrollment management, marketing & student services, said if the coffee shop and LLC become popular places for students, there is a possibility for special events to take place in the LLC, including live bands and Open Mic Nights.

Students are invited to look at the CSC Dining Services Facebook page so they can be informed about the events, food and beverages at the coffee shop. They are also invited to follow @LLCatCSC on Twitter to have access to information from the LLC and coffee shop.

A total of $6,000 was allocated to CAB for Week of Welcome events including, but not limited to, the hypnotist, Tshirts, pool party, and printing of posters and schedules.

Dormitory elections are in sight for the new academic year, Chief Justice Jon Lordino said. Students must live in the dormitories they are representing in order to run for a position.

President Dillon Spies said that positions need to be filled for the diversity, commencement, and homecoming committees. Senators from E.H.P.C.P.S.W. and Liberal Arts may fill the positions.

Laure Sinn, student activities director, said the theme for this year is Minions, and talked about New Student Orientation week.

Meanwhile in CAB, Brenden Mead, vice-chair of finance, resigned before Tuesday’s meeting. The reason for his resignation was not given at the meeting. A treasurer’s report was not given.

Kelsey Empfield, CAB chair, reminded clubs about the Club Fair, August 28. If clubs need a table at the Club Fair, they should contact Sinn.

Homecoming is also coming up Oct. 4. The theme for this year is “Welcome to the Jungle.” They are still looking for students to sit on the homecoming committee and if interested they should contact Empfield.

Stephanie Steele, vice-chair of records, asked for an update of CAB representatives. She would like clubs to have their decision made by the meeting Tuesday. Executives also asked that clubs email Lordino their updated constitutions.

One of the events of W.O.W. is a scavenger hunt. In 46 offices on campus and “hundreds” of businesses downtown there is a picture of a minion. CAB is asking students to take a selfie with the minion and then tag the picture with “#MinionSelfie” when they post their pictures online. Prizes will be given and there was talk of a 37 in. flat screen TV, along with other prizes.

The scavenger hunt is going on now until Sept. 5.

Jacob Rissler, student trustee, said he will be traveling to Lincoln on Sept. 6 and asked that if students have anything they want brought up at the meeting, contact him.

Pool project set back, council to vote again Ashley Swanson Managing Editor Familiar news across town, Chadron’s city council voted to not move forward with the enclosing of the city pool, a project in which Chadron State College and the city were collaborating.

The two entities planned, discussed, and debated over the idea, which then lead to designs being brought forth, and numbers were calculated. The council decided to not move forward for a couple of reasons.

“They [city council] were concerned about the long-term responsibility of having a pool,” Wayne Anderson, city manager, said Wednesday.

The city council was also concerned about how they were going to afford the pool, as it is a huge commitment, he said.

It would cost $250,000 a year to maintain, and they’re afraid they wouldn’t have the money to pay to maintain it a few years down the road.

Although the biggest reason for not moving forward was about the money, there was also a fear that the pool would

As of Friday, 1,110 contracts had been made for the residents halls, which ties with the third best number in CSC history, in 1996, Rhine said.

Students are coming from 47 states and 42 percent of those are first-generation students.

“As of yesterday [Aug. 14]—it’s probably changing as we speak—we’re up in undergraduate and down a little in graduates,” Rhine said. “I do expect that to change over the next few weeks.”

This year also claims to be the semester with the largest group of new international students on-campus. The

26 students come from places such as Jamaica, Vietnam, New Zealand, and France, among many others.

Rhine also spoke about the Integrated Post Secondary Data System.

According to the IPEDS website, the system that collects information from colleges, universities, and technical and vocational institutions.

Information collected from these higher education entities include enrollment, graduation rates, finances, and institutional prices.

This information is compiled and made available to students and parents in order to choose an institution best suited for them. It will also serve as a ranking system for all higher education schools, Rhine said.

The second phase of the Rangeland Management Center has started, and is set for completion at this time next year, Rhine said.

Armstrong’s renovations are nearing completions, and it is expected for players to play basketball in the new gym by November.

EDITORIAL–THE EAGLE’S VIEW

Dear #Ferguson PD: stop arresting journalists

I

t’s become almost impossible to ignore the reports coming out of Ferguson, Missouri in the past 12 days, but if you aren’t in the know; on Aug. 9, Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, 28, shot and killed an unarmed black youth; 18-year-old Mike Brown. The killing has since sparked protests and skirmishes between crowds and an incredibly militarized police force. The ordeal has left the streets of the St. Louis suburb resembling a war zone.

Details about what’s happening in Ferguson have been hard to come by and even harder to confirm. The police force’s side of the story seems to be changing depending on which outlet you go to. Even their own official reports seem to be revised after the fact.

These discrepancies could be due to the fact that coverage has been jeopardized by police hostility toward reporters who are engaged in lawful news gathering activities.

On Aug. 14, St. Charles County SWAT team members fired a tear-gas canister at a camera crew from Al-Jazeera then proceeded to swarmed in with guns drawn to tip over the crew’s lights and tripod.

While the crew fled up the street shouting “We’re the press,” St. Louis station KSDK caught the interaction on camera. If you view the footage, the benefit of the doubt cannot be given to the SWAT team, this was not “just an accident.” Why the police chose to attack the crew and advance on their postition while using such a threatening posture remains an unanswered question.

As of Tuesday, 11 journalists and photographers have either been arrested or detained in Ferguson, Missouri.

Reporters serves as watchdogs to ensure that the police are acting appropriately, but judging how the police are treating reporters, we can only infer something nefarious.

N

ews that Islamic State militants beheaded former Stars and Stripes Photojournalist James Foley, broke late Tuesday. Foley had been on assignment as a freelance photographer covering the Syrian civil war when he disappeared in November 2012. According to the video released by militants, the killing is in retaliation to U.S. airs trikes on Islamic State targets in Iraq.

Foley’s death, while tragic and gruesome, has sparked my renewed interest in an important question: should journalists be allowed on the battlefield?

As a Veteran and journalist, I believe that the news media has an obligation to send reporters into combat zones and to provide coverage of the conflict.

The public has a need to know when a conflict is occurring. Fair and unbiased war coverage gives them insight and helps the public put political and social pressure on people in positions of power; this pressure, in-turn, forces the powered individual to act. While the video of Foley’s execution is disturbing, ignoring the “why” will do more harm than good.

War news is hard for anyone to stomach, and it’s even harder to sell to a weary and beleaguered public. However, after more than a decade of this nations involvement in numerous wars, it is still a highly relevant subject that needs to be discussed.

The larger philosophical imperative is

that war carries huge repercussions for every person on this planet.

I hate to state the obvious, but war kills people: be they civilians, soldiers, or “the enemy.” The public needs to be made aware every time war breaks out.

We can’t willingly ignore an uncomfortable truth just because it doesn’t sell newspapers or catch high ratings.

Which side is right and which side is wrong is not for the reporter to decide.

Their job is to report on what happens.

The problem I see is stems from our societal understanding; we have received a selective presentation of war through media, and there’s something missing.

The “T.V. war” that was Vietnam has made it’s mark in history as has having destroyed our nation’s will to fight.

When the public had the opportunity to see that everything wasn’t as cut and dry as the WWII newsreels, they protested further involvement.

The public got an opportunity to see for the first time what so many Veterans know first hand: war is a violent and traumatic experience.

However, beginning with the Reagan

administration, the White House and Pentagon recognized the potential for negative public reaction when people had the opportunity to witness war in that same context.

Politicians have since taken advantage of a dramatic change in philosophy for how they should manage military public affairs during a war.

Press black-outs began during 1983’s Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada, and the influence carried on through the rise of “embedded journalists” during the first Iraq War in 1990.

Military Public Affairs’ relationship with the press has ensured that only “credentialed” reporters are allowed access to witness and document wars. So what does this all mean?

In order to maintain public support for war, you have to change and control how the public perceives it.

If you watch the news today, more than likely you’ll only see brief stock footage with the majority of the newscast consisting of top-down 3D maps and an occasional edited drone strike.

It’s sterile and clean, so that the public can stay detached from the conflict.

The blood-and-guts reality is filtered out, and I find this troubling because it serves a disservice to not only the public interest, but also alienates those who witness war firsthand.

Foley’s death should not be seen as a reason to limit reporters access to combat zones, nor should his death be seen as a rally-cry for a particular political purpose. His death is real; a reality that underscores the need for reporters.

T

here’s a girl walking down the street with blond hair, the perfect bronze tan, long legs, and the curves of a Victoria’s Secret model.

Her makeup is done flawlessly and her hair has the perfect beach curls every girl desires, but can never seem to achieve. She has on a low cut pink tank top that is a little bit see through to see her pink bra to match.

Her shorts show off her leg muscles that don’t even seem to move when she sways her hips as she walks. As she walks down the street, every man turns his head to look at this perfection. But is she truly perfect?

This idea is all men think about. This is their expectation of a true woman. When you imagine this woman, does she truly seem happy with herself?

She may have that confidence for a bit while every man stops and stares in her direction, but later that night, when she takes off the bold eye liner and expensive foundation, is she still that confident about herself?

Men have this expectation of the perfect woman, and looks are all that matter. I know all of you say that you’re different, every girl hears it every time she meets a new guy and is skeptical about his opinion of her, but if all of you are saying that you’re different, are you truly?

Please tell me if you looked at the girl who was right behind that ideal woman who was in sweat pants, a T-shirt,

and walking with her head down.

But, enough with the men bashing. Ladies, when was the last time you felt truly confident with yourself without feeling like you were showing a little too much?

Or possibly searching for the attention of a guy because you’re getting a little tired of hanging out with the girls or having Netflix marathons every night?

You need to feel confident in jeans and a T-shirt. But, at the same time, have the confidence to go out in a dress that does make you feel a little sexy. You need to dress the way you want men to treat you.

For example, if you’re wearing a belly button shirt and shorts that show off your cheeks, expect men to only want a one-night-stand and don’t be offended if that’s what they do.

If a guy takes interest in you while you’re in sweat pants and no makeup, he’s definitely interested in your personality. But you must also find your happy medium. Ladies, be confident enough to wear cute clothing, but also have enough self-respect to say no to a guy that you can tell is just going for a one-night-stand.

Altogether, gentlemen; please learn to respect women whether they are in heels and a skirt or sweatpants and no makeup.

Ladies, please learn to have enough self-respect to realize that you are valuable and you don’t need to wear clothing that show more than your comfortable with.

Everyone has value; learn how to use it.

New Student Orientation kicks-off fall 2014

Suitcases, cars, and hundreds of feet covered CSC’s campus Thursday as incoming students prepared to move into their dorms. Kent Hall, campus’s freshman dorm, was crowded from wall-to-wall with students signing in and moving items to their room.

Next door, the Student Center’s atmosphere was full of excitement and nonstop talking. Students created long lines almost stretching the length of the hallway while waiting for their new student IDs. Others wandered over the housing tables, or into the ballroom where advisers waited to assist students with their classes.

As the day moved on, the freshman class of 2018 crowded Elliott Field’s stadium for the welcome back speech given by CSC President Randy Rhine.

As usual, after the speech, decked in CSC logo-donned sunglasses, students gathered on the field for a group photo.

Smells of pulled pork, chicken, pie, vegetables, and much more greeted students and their families as they took a break from moving and unpacking at the family picnic.

Not only were people able to sit back and enjoy a good meal, but also engross themselves in live music and games. Dozens of students pulled together in teams for sand volleyball, while others took to the basketball court to shoot some hoops.

The weekend was jam-packed with events including three more live bands, a welcome back outdoor dance, and an international picnic in Wilson Park. All too soon the back-toschool agendas were thought out, and classes resumed.

Monday wound down with a pool party at the city pool, which brought a large group of students, decked out in their swimsuits and sunglasses.

Diving and cannonball contests were started, while squirting fights erupted with squirt guns. Students also partook in a few games of basketball and Frisbee.

CSC takes a stronger look on sexual assault Spike Jordan Reporter Chadron State College has taken a tougher stance concerning sexual assault, CSC President Randy Rhine said Friday during the allcampus meeting.

“The campus is obligated to investigate every mention of sexual assault,” Rhine said, “whether the cops are involved or not.”

Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments requires colleges and universities receiving federal funding to combat gender-based violence and harassment, and respond to survivors’ needs in order to ensure that all students have equal access to education.

Nebraska State College System board policy 3020; Sexual Violence or Sex Harassment Reporting, Policies and Procedures; further outlines how the state college system maintains Title IX compliance.

Shelley Dunbar, human resources director and Title IX coordinator, says that the college is taking steps to improve reporting and training

among campus staff to ensure a safe environment for all students.

“We want to ensure that students are free from having to face sexual violence so that they can continue with their education,” Dunbar said Tuesday.

A White House initiative launched last spring brought nationwide attention to the issue of sexual assault in higher education. President Obama has urged colleges and universities to take a more proactive approach to preventing sexual harassment and assaults on and off campus.

“We are sensing a heightened awareness and sensitivity to this issue in, not just colleges, but institutions across the country.” Pat Beu, senior director of student affairs, said, citing recent actions taken by the Department of Defense to curb military sexual assault.

According to the Department of Education’s Office of Postsecondary Education, CSC reported two instances of sexual assault that occurred in on-campus student housing facilities between 2010-12. Statistics for 2013 are not yet available to the public.

Volunteers sought by The Big Event For the third consecutive year, staff members are already planning for next year’s The Big Event.

TBE is a community-wide service to give back to Chadron and the surrounding areas.

Students, faculty, staff, and community members gather on Elliott Field, wearing their TBE T-shirts, and prepare to make their way to designated spots where they clean, rake, paint, or

help in any way they can.

New season brings new coaching staff Laramie Schlichtemeier Reporter As the new school year begins Chadron State welcomes many changes to campus including a couple coaches taking on new positions and one new head coach. Brad Gamble, former assistant coach, became the interim head track coach and the cross country coach, and Chris Wells moves in as the new interim volleyball coach. To fill Gamble’s former position, Brian Medigovich takes over as the interim assistant coach.

Gamble is a former track and field athlete from CSC. He is also a national champion in the heptathlon in 2011 for CSC. Gamble will be replacing Ryan Baily. He set a Division II Indoor Track and Field National Champion meet record. While on Baily’s staff, Gamble has coached 10 All-Americans, 33 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champions and help guide the Eagles to three runner-up finishes at the conference championships. He is the 25th track and field coach in Chadron State history.

Medigovich, who was a graduate assistant last season, will assist Gamble as both the assistant track and assistant cross country coach. This season will mark only Medigovich’s second season at CSC, but in his first year, cross country runners improved all the way around and set records at every race. He ran for Adams State in his college years. He earned 13 All-American honors, and, in 2010, was the Individual National Champion in the 5k indoors. He was a competitor on a national championship teams three times.

The cross country team will begin its season at South Dakota School of Mines on Sept. 5.

Wells, of Berkeley, California, will replace Janel Baily. He will be the 14th volleyball coach in CSC history. Wells is only the second man to lead the Eagles program since 1972. He has 28 years of playing and coaching experience, most recently coming from New Mexico Highlands as associate head coach. He helped lead the Cowgirls to a 12-17 record, which was their most wins in the last 10 years. As head coach at Willamette University in Oregon, he was named Northwest Conference Coach of the Year in 1992. In the three years guiding the Bearcats, Wells compiled a record of 98-46 and won two conference titles.

The volleyball team open their 2014 schedule at a tournament hosted by Montana State University-Billings. Their first home match is scheduled for Sept. 25 against Western New Mexico.

The Chadron State College Theatre Department will be performing the musical “Big River”.

The department received a grant from Nebraska Arts, and they will also have a guest actor, D. Kevin Williams, who will be playing the part of Big Jim. Thirty-two students auditioned for the musical, and

there are 14 parts to be filled. Along with the college students, 10-year-old Brayla Miller of Chadron auditioned. Auditions took place Tuesday and callbacks were Wednesday.

Each student auditioning had to perform a memorized monologue and folk song. The songs ranged anywhere from “Walking After Midnight” to “Danny Boy.” Senior Zachary Henderson, 21, of Douglas, Wyoming, auditioned for the part of ‘The Duke’.

“I auditioned because it seemed like a lot of fun,” Henderson said.

Senior Rebecca Lashmett, 21, of Lusk, Wyoming did not audition for a specific role.

“I received a theatre scholarship and that requires me to audition,” Lashmett said.

Freshman Jesse Snider, 18, of Lincoln auditioned for his first college role.

“I like to act, and I’m a theatre major,” he said.

There are not many female roles in the musical, so junior Tami Rethman, 20, of Verdon auditioned for any female part.

“I auditioned because this is what I want to do,” she said.

The musical will show at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 2-4, and 2 p.m., Oct. 5.
