OVERNIGHT PARKING PROHIBITED IN FRONT OF AQUATIC CENTER An ordinance to prohibit parking on 10th Street from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m., in front of the Chadron Area Aquatics and Wellness Center, will be effective immediately, according to CSC Resource Officer Trevor Jacobson. Signs near the

Club nominations for Homecoming royalty due Nalani Stewart Reporter This week’s Campus Activities Board Meeting kicked off with a warm welcome from CAB Chair Trista Schell, Tuesday. With Homecoming right around the corner, Justice of the Constitutional Court Sam Merrill informed the present club representatives that club nominations are due no later than noon, Sept. 11.

Candidate pictures will take place Sept. 12-13, in the basement of Crites Hall between 11 a.m. and noon. If the candidates cannot make those times, it is up to them to reschedule with Daniel Binkard. Elections will be held on Sept. 18-20, with the Coronation taking place also on Sept. 20.

Before hearing the report from Vice Chair of Programming Chair of Relations Kimberley Hernandez, Schell took a moment to address the tragedy of the death of former student

Aaron Eagle, and address suicide awareness on campus.

“If you guys know someone who is struggling, or you are struggling, reach out,” Schell said. “There are resources on campus, you can always reach out.”

Later in the meeting Adviser Pat Beu also addressed the subject of suicide and mental health.

“We ask CAB to be sensitive to the issues of substance, being aware that there are a lot of issues that are impacting the lives of our students, and we ask you to be very conscientious, and sensitive to that,” Beu said.

Also addressed at the meeting, was the mandatory club fair Wednesday, in the Student Center Ballroom.

A major topic of discussion was the NSCS September board meeting, specifically the voting of policy 3300, which affects the student organizations of Chadron State College, Wayne State College, and Peru State College. Student Trustee Ashley Goad explained that the policy addresses

clubs’ and organizations’ travel expenses, particularly the adviser’s. According to the policy an adviser must travel with the club to sanctioned events, with the expenses being paid by either the college, or the student organization. The decision of who will take the expense will be left up to the college itself.

Another big change is the structure of most of the clubs on campus. Many clubs will continue to be a student organization, but if a club applies, they have the opportunity to be accepted as an academic or professional organization. This could affect the place from which most clubs will receive their funding.

If the funding comes from the college, then the clubs may apply for transportation, and be covered by the school’s insurance. Club fundraising will continue to stay the same. This policy is one of many that will be voted on in the early weeks of September.

Coffee shop future still up for debate Nalani Stewart Reporter

The future of the coffee shop in the library, Book Ends, continues to be a topic of debate. Some members of Senate including President Carly Slaght felt that Book Ends was quite costly, “not being used enough,” and presented some complaints regarding noise. Senate proposed ideas and alternatives, such as a barista could be hired on campus. Until the Student Senate comes to a verdict, however, Book Ends remains on the first floor of the Reta E. King Library.

Student Senate discussed plans concerning future senators of the resident halls.

With the elections underway, Student Senate Chief Justice Samantha Merrill explained that the petitions were due noon yesterday, and should have been given to her or any other justice of the court. Elections will open at noon Sept. 5, and will close noon Sept. 7.

New senators will be sworn in Monday, Sept. 11, at the senate meeting.

Another topic at the meeting was the financial situation of Senate. As of Monday evening, the financial balance “is in the negative,” said Vice President of Finance Lukas Klueber; its current balance sits at -$130,670 of un-allocated funds. However, as

later explained by Faculty Advisor Deena Kennell and Klueber, there is no need to worry because they will receive “roughly $300,000,” once the school year kicks off.

Klueber also said that it could be about three weeks before the funds are received.

Senate also came to a conclusion regarding the various events soon to take place on campus including: Week of Welcome, Free Movie Night, and the Magician John Rotellini coming to campus Monday.

Topics still up for debate include: online chat rooms in place of open forums to improve student feedback, installation of water bottle filling stations, and the date for Spring Daze.

Enrollment counts up from 2016 Torri Brumbaugh Reporter As students moved back in to the residence halls and the check-in tables quickly filled, the number of incoming students appeared higher than last year.

Lisa Stein, director of admissions, confirmed that enrollment for freshmen is greater than a year ago.

“Based on national numbers, we are doing really well,” Stein said.

During last year’s census, done Oct. 15, 2016, enrollment at Chadron State included 388 freshmen with 382 as full time students.

As of this year, Stein has counted 423 first time freshmen attending CSC at the start of classes on Aug. 21.

Attention all freshmen: Advice for the new year Welcome to Chadron State College, whether you are returning or just starting. It’s that time of year again.

Classes are starting, football season is creeping up and freshmen are thrown into the college life.

We, at The Eagle, have been in your shoes. Everyone older than you, has gone through what you are. The big move to college can be difficult for some. Here are some tips to help make this change smooth.

Number one: Go to class. I know you have spent the past four years in a high school sitting in classes for eight hours a day, but you still need to go. Independence is amazing. You are now free from your mom breathing down your neck about everything, but your freedom does not excuse you laying in bed all day. Surprise, but most teachers take attendance and even if they don’t, they notice who is in class. Stay caught up in class and get the education you’re paying for. I know that 8 a.m. class might sound really terrible on a Monday morning, but get up and go. Habits are hard to break and once you are in the habit of skipping, you are destined for bad things.

Number two: Be respectful. If you live on campus, that is your new home. Treat it how your mother would want you to. Just follow the rules, respect quiet hours and don’t be stupid. Not everyone likes to stay up until 3 a.m. playing Xbox, so be respectful of your roommates and floormates. Your RA’s have a job to do, so if you follow the rules of the dorms, there won’t be a problem.

Number three: Get involved. I know this is cliche, but it really does help you feel like a part of the community.

There are many clubs on campus that are always looking for new people. Do some research, find things that interest you, because there are other people that share your interests. Participate in on campus events. Residence Life Association works really hard to put on events on campus for students to be a part of. Watch for advertisements for events you might be interested in and bring some friends.

If you are not sure who to talk to about getting involved, talk to your RA’s.

Number four: Stay organized. This is easier said than done. I have bought a planner and filled out one page and never used it again, but organization helps tremendously in college. Buy a dry-erase board and write yourself reminders about upcoming assignments, tests or meetings.

Use sticky notes for reminders. Constantly check Sakai and EagleMail for deadlines and emails from professors.

You don’t want to be the person that shows up to class

when it’s canceled because you didn’t check your email.

I’ve been there. Check your MyCSC account and make sure you pay your bill on time. The last thing you want to do is get evicted from campus. Also, keep track of your student I.D. That card is literally your food source, so don’t lose it!

Number five: Be smart. You aren’t fooling anyone. Everyone knows why you stumble into the dorms at 2 a.m. on the weekend. Your teacher knows why you never show up on time for Friday morning’s lecture. College parties seem like the greatest thing on earth, but this isn’t like the movies. Be safe, smart, and don’t put yourself in a position to get into trouble. Watch out for your friends. If they are putting themselves in bad situations and losing control, put the brakes on. There is no shame in leaving early and getting home safe. It is all fun and games until the party gets busted and you have to make a wonderful phone call telling your parents that you are receiving an MIP. Don’t forget the real reason you are here is to get a higher education. You have paid a lot of money for this opportunity, so don’t just drink it away. In a perfect world, freshmen would study in the dorms on weekends, and absolutely nobody would drink alcohol until they turn 21. But let’s be honest, it is going to happen. Don’t be stupid, know your limits, understand the risks and do not drive while impaired.

Number six: Explore. Chadron has a lot more to offer than many of you may think. Yes, it is a small town with limited places and opportunities for leisure, but don’t be afraid to go outside of city limits. Chadron State Park is just a few minutes south of town. There is fishing, hiking and even an 18-hole disc golf course. If you travel west, Fort Robinson State Park offers great views, with a touch of history, trail rides, fishing and more hiking. There is an 18-hole golf course just outside of Crawford, and if you aren’t afraid to drive on a dirt road, Toadstool Geologic Park is another great outdoor exploration opportunity. If you are tired of the outdoors, or if you just generally don’t enjoy them, grab a few friends, plug in the aux cord, and take a mini road trip. Rapid City, South Dakota, is less than a two hour drive from Chadron. There are plenty of shopping opportunities and more dining options (yes, they have a Taco Bell).

Number seven: Have fun! This is your time to grow, learn and begin the rest of your life. Make friends, make memories and make this the experience of a lifetime.

Carhenge attracts masses for solar eclipse Preston Goehring Managing Editor The small man-made tourist attraction, just north of Alliance, became the temporary stop for thousands, Monday.

Carhenge was built in 1987 by artist Jim Reinders, as a tribute to his recently passed father, according to Carhenge’s official website. The original circle structure, made of 39 classic cars coated in gray paint, offered the perfect viewing spot for those willing to bear the traffic.

Reinders, along with his fan posse, filled the parking area with travel vans and SUVs, all with markings to signify they were with “The Creator.”

When the moon first “touched” the sun, around 10:30 a.m., the still-gathering crowd cheered and clapped, building the enthusiasm and excitement for the mysterious, captivating event.

Solar eclipses are rare, but a total solar eclipse, crossing

through the heart of the United States? That is a once in a lifetime event. In fact the last time it happened was nearly 100 years ago on June 8, 1918, when a solar eclipse crossed from Washington to Florida.

Never experiencing an event like this, I armed myself with a small camera, and a notepad, and a slight (major) hope that a cult of foil-headed crazies would gather in a circle and chant to an unknown overlord waiting to be raptured or abducted by an extra-terrestrial being.

To my dismay, no such groups appeared, only tripods with expensive cameras and telescopes, the occasional dancing naturalist with a hula-hoop, and a few pairs of individuals wearing costumes, making the event have a slight comic-con feel. A pair of “aliens” walking around drew the attention of the majority of smart phones looking to take the perfect selfie with the “fourth kind.”

As the eclipse progressed, a strange haze fell upon the area, creating suspense as the excited crowd waited for totality. Dogs

began to grow anxious, spinning in circles and releasing the slight bark of confusion.

The brief moment of silence was quickly dissipated by the growing roar of the crowd as darkness fell upon the rusting automotive display of art.

Totality.

As I tried to capture the perfect image of the giddy onlookers, I glanced up and stared right at the glowing ring in the sky.

The crowd amplified as they were encompassed in near darkness during the middle of an average August day.

Just as the noise began to fall, a faint voice from the crowd yelled, “There it is, there is the diamond.” The crowd yelled again, beholding the phase just after totality that reveals the first rays of the sun, mimicking the shine from a bright diamond ring.

The next total solar eclipse is in 2024, but will mainly cross the eastern part of the U.S. I, a previous skeptic of the events true awe effect, highly recommend at least attempting to place yourself in its path of totality.

Great American Eclipse

Krystal Wilson Photographer Early Monday morning Michael D. Kennedy, Torri Brumbaugh and I, made our way to an isolated location in Harrison, away from the droves of eclipse enthusiasts with the hope of capturing the stages of the Total Solar Eclipse on camera.

With time to spare, we began to plan our strategy and set up the school cameras for shooting.

Just as looking at the partial eclipse without proper protection will damage the eye, photographing the sun directly will also damage cameras.

In order to take pictures of the partial eclipse, we did some experimenting with Kennedy’s personal camera. We cut out the lens of a pair of eclipse viewing glasses, and placed it inside a 200mm camera lens, which we then attached to a 2x tele-converter, giving us a 400mm reach. Using this method allowed us to capture the images shown of the partial eclipse. We were then able to use two additional cameras, one set to shoot at 600mm and the other at 300mm, to capture the anticipated moment of totality.

The totality portion was projected to last for 1 minute, 47seconds at our location, putting the pressure on all of us to get a good picture. With adrenaline flowing, the time seemed to go by in under a minute. In the rush of it all, Kennedy forgot to remove the filter from the back of his camera, missing the prime shot of the total eclipse. Celebrating our success afterward Brumbaugh was proud that, “we were able to get the shot when our professor couldn’t.”

With only two short weeks until the start of the season, the men’s and women’s cross country teams have been busy with off-season training. The Duncan long distance runners will start their season Sept. 2, at the Hardrocker Invitational, in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Head Coach Brian Medigovich, entering his fifth season as head coach, has a positive outlook on both the returners, and the new faces of the men’s and women’s programs.

Medigovich said that for the men, returners Phil Duncan, senior of Chadron; Eric Yager, senior of Hot Springs, South Dakota; and Levi Avila, senior of Mitchell, will be the team’s frontrunners. Medigovich also said that freshmen Hunter Kratz, and Sheldon Curley, will also make an impact in their first collegiate season.

Kratz and Curley are two of four new competitors on the men’s side.

The men’s team will look to continue their improvement and growth within the conference. Last season, the men finished fifth at the RMAC Championships, their lowest finish in the last five years. The RMAC typically has excellent competition,

with several schools repeatedly among the nation’s best. Last year, Adams State University, Alamosa, Colorado, was the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. Colorado School of Mines, Golden; Western State Colorado University, Gunnison; and Colorado State University-Pueblo, all ranked in the top 10. Adams State won the team title at the National Championships to end the season. CSC only had one competitor at the Championship, Alejandro Garcia, of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming.

The Eagles have had success in the past at the debut invite. In 2016, the men’s team won, with the help of Garcia, who crossed the line second. Another former CSC runner, Dylan Stansbury, of Crawford, finished fifth. The six remaining CSC runners all finished in the top 20, of the 40 runners.

Fortunately, the young and talented women’s team has another year of experience and training at the collegiate level. The

roster was dominated by freshmen, with only a handful of more experienced runners. The women brought back five athletes, with seven new faces joining the program.

Two of the returners include Nikki Banzhaf, senior of Chadron, and Alyse Henry, junior of Rock Springs, Wyoming, both were redshirted last season, but consistently found themselves in the top 10 when they competed.

Medigovich said that both Banzhaf and Henry have a shot to compete at the National Championships in November.

Savannah Silbaugh, sophomore of Upton, Wyoming, and Dominique Oden, sophomore of Anaheim, California, frequently led the women’s runners a year ago.

Although the women’s team didn’t win last year’s Hardrocker Invite, they finished third in team score, behind Gillette College, Gillette, Wyoming, and South Dakota School of Mines, Rapid City.

BRIEF Registration forms for Twisted Crawdad Trail Races available The fifth annual Twisted Crawdad trails race is Sept. 16-17. The event, put on by the Chadron Community Recreation Program, brought competitors from eight states last year, including California, and West Virginia. There are five separate races; a half marathon, a 5k, 10k, a 15-mile mountain bike race, and a 20-25-mile mountain bike race that will allow competitors to race across Nebraska National Forest trails.

Registration forms are available at chadronrec. com. Registration fees are $45 for the half marathon, $35 for the 10k, $25 for the 5k, $45 for the short bike race, and $60 for the long bike race.

Last weekend, the empty residence halls were filled once again with eager freshmen, and upper classmen excited to return to their friends.

Incoming freshmen, and their families began checking in and moving into their new dorms. As usual, it doesn’t take long for the awkwardness to pass, and the pairs of roommates quickly turned into groups of four, then eight, and so on.

The new students started with a full schedule, busy with group campus tours, last-minute paperwork, and the club fair, all while attempting to keep parents from breaking down in public.

By Saturday morning, the new students seemed to have already settled into their new home, and after saying the final goodbyes, attended the weekend events.

CSC’s sorority, Xi Delta Zeta, and fraternity, Omega Phi Rho, co-sponsored a pancake feed

Saturday morning in the Backyard, treating early-birds to a hot breakfast. In the afternoon, Zeta Alpha Kappa put on a water gun fight, to help students beat the sweltering heat that blessed the area. Temperatures reached the mid-90s, but it didn’t keep students confined to their dorms. The water gun fight was just one of many outdoor activities happening behind the dorm complex.

When the temperature cooled slightly, students flocked to the sand volleyball courts behind the dorm complex.

To finish out the day, Night of Country Swing put on a street dance, helping promote their club.

NOCS has weekly dances in the Chadron Arts Center, offering students an opportunity to learn how to swing dance.

The social activities continued throughout the week, with an ice cream social, alcohol awareness program, and safety presentations.

RLA hosted a carnival last night to round out the Week of Welcome events.
