Community Choir open for everyone

The first rehearsals for the community choir will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1 in Memorial Hall Rm. 126; rehearsals will continue weekly until the concert. The choir is under the direction of Una Taylor, who can be contacted at (308) 432-6484 with questions. Anyone and everyone is invited to participate. There is a $20 registration fee—checks payable to CSC—and registration forms will be available at the first rehearsal. The Community Choir concert will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, at the Chadron Arts Center.

Senate reports an increase to student fees, tuition Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor Senate allocated $109 for food provided for that Monday’s meeting.

Student Trustee Coy Clark said this summer at two Board of Trustees meetings the Board raised the activity fee for all three state colleges—Chadron State College, Peru State College, and Wayne State College.

The Board also increased tuition 5.5 percent. Clark said the reason for the increase was to “play catch up” from the twoyear tuition freeze from academic years 2013-14 and 2014-15. The Board also approved the Cuba Libre program for CSC. Chief Justice applications are available

now until Sept. 2. Interviews will be the week after the applications are due and applications can be turned in the Student Senate office or under the door.

The Chief Justice position is open for any student on campus but preference will be shown to full-time students in the legal studies or criminal justice departments, Senate President Katrina Hurley said.

Petitions for dorm hall senators will be due Sept. 1, Hurley said. The new senators will be sworn in on Sept. 12.

Senate will be hosting an open forum at 7 p.m. every Thursday in the Scottsbluff room in the Student Center, unless otherwise posted, to give students the opportunity to come and voice their opinions on various topics.

CPR class offered on campus CSC Nurse Ann Dockweiler will be giving a CPR class from 12:30-4:30 p.m. Oct. 18, in the NPAC Rm. 102.

The American Heart Association Heartsaver Certification is valid for adult, child, and infant CPR and AED. Anyone who took the American Red Cross course previously, must take this new CPR course to be recertified.

The course capacity is 10 people and filled within a few hours Monday, but you may still contact Brenda Barry-Schommer to be put on a waiting list.

Contestants must be a U.S. Citizen, age 17-24, and either a resident of Nebraska or a student attending college in Nebraska. The pageant entails

a private interview, an on-stage question, and talent, swimwear, and evening wear competitions.

“Pageantry is much more than sparkly crowns and pretty gowns,” Executive Director Sara Smith said. “Contestants and titleholders have the power to make an impacting change in the world by standing by their platform issues.”

CAB Chair Molly O’Connell encouraged senators to attend CAB meetings to see what clubs are interested in. She also said there will be a club fair from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 31.

CAB will be hosting Free Movie Night every month this semester, but free bowling night will be no more because the bowling alley is closed on Saturdays.

CAB will also be hosting an outdoor movie night three Fridays a month with the projector and screen. Senate agreed to host the first outdoor movie night on Sept. 9.

Former director of student activities Chris Green will be stepping down from his position as Senate adviser after the Aug. 29 meeting due to his new position as associate athletic director. He did mention that the Guidebook App, where all the clubs and organizations on campus can pool a calendar together for all the students, is up and running. He said there is a link on the Senate webpage for a submission form that clubs and other organizations can fill out to add their events to the calendar.

CAB has positions open Uptown on Campus Melanie Nelson News Editor CAB is looking to fill multiple positions. Vice Chair of Records Courtney LaMont resigned Tuesday, as she is transferring schools.

CAB Adviser Chris Green announced that he will resign next week to assume his new position on campus as associate athletic director.

Vice Chair of Finance Gavan Archibald reported that CAB has spent $3,164.26 this school year, and $201,339.97 remains.

Archibald needs three members to fill CAB positions on the Activity Fee Board. He also asked that if any club is planning extra events that they let him know within the next two weeks so they can be added to the budget.

Chair Molly O’Connell said the club discipline policy has been modified. There is also a new code each club needs to receive information from CAB, which the board will email to all clubs.

Vice Chair of Programming Morgan Carrico announced there will be a club fair from 11-1 p.m.

Wednesday in the Student Center, and CAB and Senate will be co-sponsoring Outdoor Movie Night Sept. 9. The movie has yet to be chosen.

Vice Chair of Relations Trista Schell said the new app for a schedule of campus events, called Chadron State Activity Guide, is up and running.

Green added that there is tab on the Senate webpage where clubs can go to request that an activity be added to the app.

Schell also announced that the soup kitchen “Closer to Home” is always looking for more volunteers and clubs can contact her to sign up for an open day.

Adviser Pat Beu thanked Green for his service on the board and encouraged clubs to recruit.

“If you see folks who don’t have a home yet, invite them to come be involved,” Beu said.

O’Connell said the election for vice chair of records will be open for two weeks. She then expressed her eagerness for the coming year, despite the loss of a board member and adviser.

“We can do a lot, but we need your help,” O’Connell said.

Make a positive 1st impression

Y

ou don’t get a second chance at a first impression.

This statement is an overused cliché, but the odds are that you have heard this from a parent, counselor, or teacher. While the saying may be trite, it resounds with truth.

As we start this new semester, The Eagle urges you to remember that adage, because first impressions DO matter. The beginning of a semester is the perfect time to give a good impression. You may have classes with a professor that you have had in the past, but there is a good chance that you will have a new professor. This is your opportunity to establish yourself as a dedicated learner.

Even if you have the same professors that you have had in the past, it is still possible to kick start your semester and start with a fresh page. You just have to make

an effort.

There are a few things that you can do to give a good impression.

The first of which is to be on time.

Being punctual is a trait that all professional and responsible people possess, and it speaks volume to character.

Another way is to dress like an adult. While it is remarkably easier to roll out of bed, throw on a pair of sweats, and walk into class, dressing like you care about how you present yourself makes a difference in how people perceive you.

College is the best time to start making a professional impression. The people that you meet in college are the people that are going to help you make connections that you will need to get a job after graduation.

To throw another extremely overused adage at you, it’s not WHAT you know, but WHO you

know. As an up and coming adult, it is important to impress the people that you will be asking for references, whether that is in nine months or four years.

Not only are you going to want positive references from your professors, but if they think that you are a deserving student, then they may present you with opportunities to meet even more people that may help you in the future.

It may seem like these are all things you won’t need until later, but first impressions last longer than one would think. That being said, take a moment at the beginning of this semester to evaluate ways that you can make a better impression.

Practicing making good first impressions will also help you become a more responsible person 100 percent of the time, and you might be surprised at the opportunities that pop up.

Justine Stone Lifestyles Editor The Backyard was filled with the sound of music, laughter, and life-sized Jenga crashing to the ground during the RLA carnival Tuesday evening.

“It’s so good to see such a diverse group of people having fun together tonight,” RA Aaron Duin, 18, sophomore of Omaha, said.

Students from all different clubs, majors, and interests joined together Tuesday for the carnival. RLA supplied activities to accommodate each of these different groups of students.

Games like mini plinko, darts, skee ball, milk bottle toss, sand volleyball, cornhole, drunkgoggle basketball, and life-size Jenga were set up

around The Backyard.

If students chose to play carnival games under the tent and won, they received tickets that were put into a drawing for prizes. At the end of the night, students walked away with microwaves, a mini fridge, rugs, coin banks, speakers, a laptop, a vacuum, and various dorm and school supplies.

Along with the games, music, and prizes, RAs also hosted hot dog, snow cone, popcorn, and cotton candy stands to satisfy the hunger that students built up from playing the games.

“It was very promising for a first event on campus,” Gabi Perez, 21, senior of Sioux City, Iowa, said. “It brought everyone together, to play games, dance, eat, and just to enjoy themselves.”

Eagles plan for successful ground attack Preston Goehring Sports Editor After an injury-ridden 2015 season, the Eagles took the offseason as a chance to recover, rebuild, and replace the 14 seniors that graduated.

“We came out of spring a lot more healthy,” Head Coach Jay Long said. “The good news is that a lot of young kids played because of those injuries. This year they can rely on those game reps that they got as freshman.”

A big part of the team’s offensive game-plan will be the strong backfield. Three returners that saw substantial game time will once again carry a large workload.

Derek Jackson, junior of Pueblo West, Colorado; Kevin Coy, redshirt freshman of Davenport, Florida; and Cody Paul, senior of Seal Beach California, will be the main ground attack for CSC. The trio combined for over 2,00 yards last season, averaging more than five yards per carry.

It comes down to what kind of back we want. DJ (Jackson) is an all-around back that can really do it all. Coy is a hard downhill runner. I don’t think he has lost a yard in camp. And Paul is a guy that can get in space and do some great things.”

Long also said that there are two more freshmen running backs that will become well-known early on this season.

The offensive line only lost one senior to graduation, Daniel Sotelo. According to Long, redshirt sophomore Travis Romsa, of Burns, Wyoming, has been taking the majority of reps but Jared Maciejczak, redshirt freshman of Box Elder, South Dakota, will also see game reps.

“Stein and Matt (Vinson) are both capable quarterbacks,” Long said. “It just comes down to consistency and making plays. I thought that both of them did a great job, both improved from last fall. Ultimately, we know that we have two quarterbacks that are capable that we can win with.”

“We finally have some age and experience in that group,” Long said. “I think we have multiple guys that have the opportunity to be All-Conference.

Women picked to finish 9th, men 10th in preseason poll Preston Goehring Sports Editor With the first meet of the season rapidly approaching, the CSC cross country teams have been busy training for the season.

“They must have done a good job logging summer miles,” Head Coach Brian Medigovich said. “It’s all on their own in the summer but they are all in really good shape.”

Medigovich said that the women’s team has a lot of new faces while the men’s team has a lot of depth.

Nicky Banzhaf, senior of Chadron, and Alyse Henry, sophomore of Rock Springs, Wyoming, have redshirted this season. Banzhaf suffered an injury but Medigovich said he was planning on redshirting her before the injury occurred.

According to Medigovich, Margaret Vinton, junior of North Platte, will lead the women’s team but the rest will be “unpredictable” due to the amount of freshmen on the team.

“I still have good expectations for them,” he said. “They can run really fast.”

On the men’s side however, Alejandro Garcia, graduate senior of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, will return as one of the team’s top runners. Garcia redshirted last year but made a large impact during the indoor track season.

Dylan Stansbury, senior of Crawford, will also return this year. Stansbury placed 27th at the regional meet last season, just two spots out of an All-Region nod.

The men’s team landed 10th in the preseason conference poll with 77 points. Colorado School of Mines is predicted to win the conference, grabbing 191 points in the poll.

“This should be the best guys team we’ve ever had at Chadron State,” Medigovich said. “Black Hills will be a big rival. I think our team can line up pretty close to them.”

The teams will open their season Friday, Sept. 2, in Rapid City, South Dakota, at South Dakota School of Mines.

Class of 2020 soars onto campus Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor About 500 freshmen and new transfer students, in addition to their parents and guests, attended the annual New Student Orientation the Thursday and Friday before classes started.

This year’s NSO featured a few new events compared to years past.

Thursday, Alex Helmbrecht, director of college relations, spoke to students about the history of past and present traditions at CSC and the importance of creating your own traditions at college.

“Alex exceeded my expectations and hopefully motivated the new students to take the opportunities that CSC provides and make the absolute best of their time as an Eagle,” Justy Bullington, admissions representative and Orienta-

tion, Transition and Retention committee member, said.

At the pep rally, the Class of 2020 “released their fears,” where they wrote their fears on a slip of paper that they put in balloons and then they ceremoniously released their balloons together at Elliott Field.

Also new this year, NSO paired with the summer event Bands on Bordeaux to feature NSO on Bordeaux which gave students and parents the opportunity to see downtown Chadron.

“We co-hosted the event with the Chadron Chamber of Commerce and the event was open to our NSO attendees and the Chadron community. Blue Street provided music and there were a variety of vendors, games and activities for all ages,” Danielle Lecher, director of market development and Orientation, Transition and

Retention committee chair, said.

“Despite the cooler temps and wind, the event was well attended and we will definitely plan to do it again next year as it exposed our attendees to the businesses and families that call Chadron home.”

“NSO is always such a great time of year for the Chadron State campus and community,” Bullington said. “All of the CSC faculty and staff work so hard all year long to recruit new students, so getting to see these students move from potential students to current Eagles is one of the most rewarding experiences.”

“I was on maternity leave for a lot of the execution of these initiatives so I have to give credit to my amazing team members for all their hard work: Lisa Stein, Tamara Toomey, Justy Bullington, Sam Parker, Deena Kennell, Chris Green, Sara Smith, and Erin Heide,” Lecher said.
