Senate allocates $10k at first meeting Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor

At the first meeting of the semester, Student Senate allocated no more than $3,500 for an inflatable outdoor movie screen for CAB and no more than $7,000 for The Week of Welcome.

Senate President Katrina Hurley said the reason the money for The Week of Welcome was allocated after the fact was because Senate forgot to allocate money for The Week of Welcome before the Spring 2015 semester ended.

Hurley said usually any allocation of more than $5,000 would be brought up in a public forum before voting on the allocation at Senate so senators and constituents would have an opportunity to discuss.

Senate discussed the allocation for the movie screen at the last meeting of the Spring 2015 semester and waited to vote until after senators were able to talk to constituents about the screen.

The movie screen is between 16 and 18 feet and will be available for any student to use via a club.

Student Senate Treasurer Nathaniel Jones reported that Senate’s budget has about $141,000 in rollover from last year’s funds. He said they

are projecting to have $179,000 in student fees.

He said only half of that will come this semester and he said so far they have collected $83,000.

Jones said after the allocations for the movie screen, The Week of Welcome, $20,000 for the pool, and $154,000 for clubs last year, the Senate budget is sitting at about $135,000.

Hurley said the $20,000 for the pool had to be allocated because it was something that was agreed on between the college and the city a couple years ago.

Hurley said there are still positions on Senate that need filled. She reported that all the dorm representatives are open and elections will be within the first three weeks. A petition form is available on the senate webpage, www.csc.edu/ senate, to apply for a dorm representatives position. Chief Justice Coy Clark said petition are due to him by 5 p.m., Sunday.

There is also one liberal arts position open, two B.E.A.M.S.S. positions, three E.H.P.C.P.S.W. positions, two at-large positions, and two chief justices positions.

To apply for a school representative or atlarge representative, a resume, cover letter, and three letters of recommendations are due to Hurley by Monday. Chief justices have to be a full time student with at least a 3.0 GPA. They

cannot hold any other position on Senate, CAB executive board, nor any other subcommittee of Senate. A resume, cover letter and three recommendations are also due Monday.

CSC President Randy Rhine attended the meeting to tell senators that he appreciated their efforts and to let them know his door is always open. The administration wants to hear their opinions so things can change for the better for the students on campus.

Senior Director of Student Affairs and Senate Adviser Pat Beu told senators to look for important issues and set goals for the year. He also introduced Chris Green, who is the new director of student activities and affairs.

Adviser Deena Kennell said she wants senators to take advantage of the opportunity that is presented to them by being placed in the roles they are in. She also said the advisers of Student Senate have taken a pledge to take a more active role in Senate.

Susan Schaeffer, adviser to Student Senate, passed out handouts of “Robert’s Rules for Participating in Meetings” for all those present at the meeting. She also included “Robert’s Rules Process for Handling a Main Motion.” She reminded senators that it says in their constitution that they will follow Robert’s Rules of Order.

Student Senate has officially started as well as all of the classes on campus.

This week we allocated money to co-fund an outdoor movie screen with CAB. The screen will be available to all clubs to check out to host movie nights.

Any allocations this year that exceed $5,000 will cause Senate to host an open forum for students to come and voice their opinions. When there is a forum there will be signs stating dates and times for the forum.

CSC snatches director of human resources from SDSMT Teri Robinson Photo Editor

The Chadron State College Director of Human Resources position has been filled and the position has been elevated to the Associate Vice President of Human Resources, according to CSC President Randy Rhine.

Anne DeMersseman, native of Rapid City, South Dakota, and former South Dakota School of Mines and Technology’s Human Resource Manager, will begin her position at CSC on Sep. 8. DeMersseman has experience with Title IX, business, higher education, and human resource offices. She will be replacing the Interim Director of Human

Resources Derby Johnson.

With her background in Title IX, DeMersseman plans to “review current procedures and look to see any gaps and bring students along in discussion.”

The title was changed from director to associate because of the elevation of the position to be placed on the cabinet, according to Rhine.

“I decided it was time to have that person on the cabinet,” Rhine said. “This person will also be the lead person on Title IX.” The former position of director included the Title IX coordinator for campus, but with the responsibilities of Title IX evolving, the position needed to be elevated to allow the associate vice president more resources and focus

on Title IX issues, according to Rhine.

Title IX decisions are evolving and a new position was needed for how those decisions impact the responsibilities of that position.

“She’s qualified for the position and has experience,” Rhine said. “I think she’s going to be a very good person to be in this position.”

Her responsibilities at CSC under the newly elevated position will include directing the administration, coordinate and assess the human resources office, which include telecommunications and Title IX issues, and other responsibilities, according to a press release Friday.

“I’m so excited for the opportunity,” DeMersseman said.

“The school is already so supported by the community.”

Laure Sinn, former director of student activities and affairs, moved on to a new position this semester. As the rangeland program coordinator, Sinn will now augment programs at the rangeland pavilion.

Sinn said this will include the rangeland and rodeo people, but she said she would like to see

other people up there as well.

She wants to hear from students about what they want to see.

Sinn said, “I’m super excited for this new position. It was time to change to keep myself pumped up.”

“Chris has good ideas and he will do big things with the students,” Sinn said.

Green will continue his duties at the NPAC and will continue to oversee The Pit. He will now also be involved in CAB and student activities and with Student Senate and student leaders.

“I took the position because it’s a good step for me professionally,” Green said. “It will help me

become more involved on campus.”

A 2009 graduate of CSC, Green said he wanted to be more involved at the school he Chris Green grew up at. He said this position will hopefully lead to opportunities to move up in the student affairs profession.

Campus security offers rides to students feeling unsafe Janelle Kesterson Opinion Editor

Chadron State College’s Campus Security is offering a Safety Escort Program as of this semester. The program is part of an effort to promote a safe environment for all students, faculty and staff on campus. Safety escorts are available to anybody that is uncomfortable with walking from a building on campus to a dorm or another building.

Once an escort is arranged, a campus security officer

will walk with you or give you a ride. This ensures that you make it to your destination safely and in a professional manner.

The safety escorts are not meant to be a shuttle service. They are only intended for students, faculty, and staff that have real, serious fears. Safety escorts are only available on campus, but once a person requesting an escort is close to campus, a campus security officer will meet them at the edge of campus and escort them to their destination from there.

Safety escorts are available seven days a week from 5 p.m. - 3 a.m.

In case of an emergency, people should contact 911 or 9-911 from any of the campus phones. If a person would like to set up an escort in a non-emergency situation, they should call the Chadron Police Department’s non-emergency number at 308-432-0510. The dispatcher at the police department will contact Campus Security and a security officer will come to your campus location as soon as they are able.

Deez Nuts’ momentum is a dangerous trend

I

f you have been on Twitter or Facebook in the last two or three weeks, it is likely that you have heard about the newest independent presidential candidate, Deez Nuts. The person behind Deez Nuts is a 15-year-old boy from Wallingford, Iowa, who registered with the Federal Election Commission and submitted an official filing statement to Public Policy Polling, which is how he got his name on the polls.

According to Reuters, Public Policy Polling found that 9 percent of 600 registered voters questioned in the statewide survey in North Carolina said they would vote for Nuts as an independent in a three-way race against Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, who polled at 38 percent, and Republican front-runner Donald Trump, who polled at 40 percent. The margin of error on the Public Policy Polling was plus or minus 3.2 percent.

Deez Nuts secured eight percent of the polls in Iowa a week earlier than the North Carolina poll and seven percent the week before that in Minnesota.

NPR stated that Deez Nuts has secured his first public endorsement from the Rent Is Too Damn High party.

Jim Williams, polling analyst, told Reuters that acknowledging the Nuts polling was done as a lark, and Tom Jensen, director of the Public Policy Polling, admitted to the New York Times that he added Deez Nuts to the survey because “the name makes people laugh and it’s a long presidential election.”

The fact that the members of the Federal Election Committee think that it is acceptable to let fictional characters become registered and run for president is ludicrous. It portrays America as a weak nation and sends a message that we don’t take our own government seriously.

America is the poster child of the first world, and the example that we are setting for countries that are trying to learn how to run a democracy in the wake of totalitarianism is nothing short of insulting.

Not only that, but it sends a message to terror groups across the globe that we have a weakness festering within our nation which only increases the chances of attacks.

In many ways, this incident speaks to the involvement of the younger generation in politics, but it sends the message in a negative way. It shows that our generation thinks politics are a joke. We should be striving to find a fitting leader, but that hardly seems to be the case.

We strongly urge you, as young voters, to make mature decisions when it comes to matters as important as a presidential election. You may think your voice is insignificant, but the quick rise of the ‘Nuts’ campaign is proof that young voters can make a huge difference in the outcome of a political race.

Class of 2019 arrives School may have officially started with classes on Monday, but freshmen and new students began receiving information and attending campus events last Thursday for move-in and New Student Orientation.

A mass of bodies filled Kent Hall’s lawn area, and other residence halls, Thursday morning as new students, their guests, Eagle Leaders-returning students, and CSC faculty and staff helped move and check in the students.

After new students were situated in their dorms, they had an opportunity for questions to be answered at the One-Stop Shop, find their classrooms, and enjoy an evening of fun and welcome.

The Class of 2019 joined together for a Pep Rally where CSC President Randy Rhine welcomed the class. A welcome picnic followed after and allowed students and their guests to relax and enjoy a free meal before a second day of activities.

Justy Bullington, admissions representative, headed New Student Orientation for the first time and focused on Eagle Pride throughout the activities in the first two days new students were on campus.

“We wanted to instill Eagle Pride early on and really welcome them to the Chadron State family,” Bullington said.

Bullington had the assistance of 57 Eagle Leaders, and faculty and staff to help coordinate all of the activities on campus and assist the new students and their guests in any way needed.

Friday provided more chances to straighten out any issues a student may have and check where their classrooms are located. A backyard bash barbeque and party ended the night and allowed those in attendance to savor chicken and pasta salad before competing in various activities and games. A slip and slide, bag toss, games of basketball and volleyball, life size water pong, and music entertained participants until after dark.

Roughly 440 new freshmen, and a total of 502 new residents in the residence halls were recorded as of Tuesday, according to Vice President of Enrollment Management, Marketing, and Student Services Jon Hansen.

“Our enrollment number will continue to fluctuate until we close the adddrop date for the second eightweek classes,” Hansen said.

On a head count from the same day last year, August 25, 2014, this year the count is down one percent, according to Hansen. However, there is a 25 percent increase in new graduate students and the overall graduate enrollment is up 5.5 percent from last year.

Marketing and advertising initiatives along with the Eagle Rate, a low tuition for out-of-state undergraduate students, are being used to help with recruitment for the 20162017 academic school year.

Eagles tab Stein as starting QB Preston Goehring Sports Editor The Eagle football team will look to TD Stein, a redshirt freshman and native of Chadron, to quarterback the team this year. Stein, along with several other first time starters, will round out CSC’s young but hungry roster.

“There was a lot of weight on my shoulders because there was a four quarterback battle in the spring,” Stein said. “It feels good to be named the guy so now I can finally focus on getting wins for the team and not just winning the spot.”

The decision to name Stein as quarterback was not one that was made hastily.

“It was a long process,” Head Coach Jay Long said. “It’s something that has been going on since early spring. We had 15 practices in the spring and 14 right now. It took almost 30 practices for us to decide. We felt that TD did a good job with his confidence and knowing the scheme. The thing that I like about him is his confidence and his knowledge of the game.”

Stein will have some big shoes to fill, following Jonn McLain, CSC’s all-time passing leader.

“It’s pretty nerve-racking just because he was so great,” Stein said. “He was a Chadron guy, and I was a Chadron guy, so we got to talk a lot. I don’t feel much pressure but happy that I have him as a mentor this year.”

“McLain is one of those guys that are hard to replace,” Long said. “Every year we have guys in our program that are stars. Sam Parker was a star, Michael Lorenzo was a star and great football players. It’s up to the younger guys to replace those guys. The biggest thing is that TD doesn’t try to act like he is Jonn McLain. He has to just be himself.”

Long also said that Stein will split snaps with Matt Vinson, sophomore of Box Elder, South Dakota.

“Whoever it is, we are going to make sure that we follow them and support them,” Long said.

The Eagles will have their annual scrimmage 10 a.m., Saturday in preparation for their first game against the Missouri S&T Miners, in Rolla.

“I just want to win,” Stein said. “I want to show the country that we are still here and relevant in D-II. Just because we are young doesn’t mean we can’t play with the big guys.”

Here we stand at the beginning of the fall semester. Just as we set goals at the start of a new year, we now have an excellent opportunity to set ourselves up for success in the goals we set for ourselves on campus.

Not only can setting goals for nutrition and fitness aid our physical health, the incorporation of healthy habits can provide us with greater mental acuity, reduce stress and increase our energy levels: all things that can help us live happier lives and aid academic success.

However, living a healthy life as a college student brings a unique set of challenges.

We are constantly on the go—to class, to the library, to work—this means that often the foods that we eat are consumed thought-

lessly and our fitness regimens might fall to the wayside.

In the pursuit of a healthy life, thoughtfulness and planning become necessities.

Knowing what healthy food options are available on campus, and understanding the way the foods you eat and how your activity level affects your body is key.

Some simple tips to help you engage in healthy living this semester include: • Prepare healthy snacks over the weekend, that way they are ready to grab and go when life becomes chaotic. Hard boiled eggs, cheese sticks, fresh fruits and vegetables are great options for easy snacking.

• Journal your food and exercise. In today’s amazing technological world, we have the benefit of apps that allow us to quickly track our nutritional intake throughout the day. By tracking the foods we eat and the way we move our bodies, we can prevent

thoughtless eating and increase the time we spend in motion.

• Drink water. One of the best things you can do for yourself is hydrate. When we are dehydrated, we tend to overeat more frequently. Being hydrated improves energy levels. Drinking water helps flush out the toxins that we take into our bodies throughout the day. If you find that drinking plain water is boring, try adding fruit. This can improve flavor and increase detoxification benefits.

• Add your workouts to your weekly schedule and treat them like an appointment.

• Find a form of fitness that you love.

There are so many options available: yoga, running, biking, HIIT (high intensity interval training), team sports- the list goes on. If you do what you love, you are far more likely to make it a continuous part of your life.

The smells of cotton candy, popcorn and hotdogs filled the air surrounding the carnival tent outside of High Rise Tuesday night, as students lined up to play a variety of carnival games and win prizes.

Students had the chance to play classic carnival style games like Plinko, Milk Bottle Knockout, Darts, Bag Toss, and mini-golf. The carnival also offered a variety of foods and snow cones for students to enjoy as they meandered through the tent and to the games on the grass.

A new feature that was added to the festivities from previous years was a photo booth, at which students were allowed to use disguises and take ‘selfies’ with their friends

using a ‘selfie’ stick.

The weather outside the tent was perfect for some pick-up games of basketball and sand volleyball as a warm breeze flowed through the areas beside the carnival tent.

Many students chose to listen to the music and congregate on the grass with their friends.

“I had a great time hanging out with my friends and eating cotton candy,” Jayme Nunes, 22, senior of Alliance, said.

Groups of students stood chatting and some played games as RLA members announced the ticket winners of small, medium, and large prizes.

Lucky winners got to take home an assortment of prizes including the large prizes: a 32 inch television, a Bluetooth speaker, an automated coffee machine, and a vacuum.

CSC freshmen learn about alcohol awareness Janelle Kesterson Opinion Editor

The Freshman Alcohol Program hosted Robert Hackenson Jr., professional college speaker of Dynamic Influence. He presented Sober Thought at 6 p.m., Sunday in the Student Center Ballroom.

Hackenson has been delivering dynamic presentations for 10 years.

These dynamic presentations use magic and hypnosis to engage audiences in educational lectures.

The presentation that Hackenson gave focused on why poor decisions are

made and gave students a chance to see though common college misconceptions. It also showed them how to make positive choices as they transition into college.

After giving a talk about how to make good decisions and how to avoid bad decisions, Hackenson hypnotized volunteers and any students in the crowd that wished to become hypnotized.

Hackenson then told the hypnotized students about the consequences they were suffering from the hypothetical bad decisions that they had made.

One of the students was

told that she was pregnant and the student started to sob.

In another scenario the students had to tell their parents, who were other hypnotized students, that they had gotten busted at a party.

The mother started crying hysterically and the student acting as the child was very regretful and upset.

This program gave students the opportunity to look into the future to see how their decisions may affect their future.

It gave insight and warning to freshman new to the temptations that they may encounter in college.
