CAB elects new vice chair of finance Ashley Swanson Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor Sports Editor New furniture will be moved into the Student Center in October after maintenance re-carpets the main lobby, Student Senate Vice President Taylor Strong said, Monday.

Initially thought to arrive at the beginning of the semester, the furniture arrival has been set back due to back order, Strong said.

“We’re trying to make the Student Center a little more friendly,” Student Activities Coordinator Laure Sinn said.

In other news, the Essential Studies Committee met Wednesday and discussed a possible change for first year inquiry classes. All incoming freshmen are currently required to take six credit hours of an FYI class.

The committee thought of changing the six credit hour requirement to three.

Sinn said more than 400 people attended the Uptown On-Campus event that took place Thursday in the Student Center Ballroom. She also said Omega Phi Rho and XI Delta Zeta, the fraternity and sorority on campus, is hosting Greek Week Aug. 25-29.

Senator of Liberal Arts Josh Keating asked CAB if there would be a change in free movie night, as the movie theater has raised their prices

from $6 a person to $7. Originally, CAB allocated $1,800 for free movie night, which allowed 300 students to see a movie if they had their student IDs. CAB Chair Kelsey Empfield said she was not sure but she would check into it.

Vice Chair of Finance Kirby Krogman said Senate has $160,350 in total unallocated funds.

Student Senate will not convene until Sept. 8 due to Labor Day. Kelley McNabb was elected for the position of vice-chair of finance after Brendan Mead officially resigned.

Jon Lordino, chief justice of Student Senate, talked about an issue with a few clubs not getting their funding because they were not approved as clubs by the end of last

semester.

The clubs mentioned were Natural Sciences, Sharp Shooters, ROTARACT, Phi Beta Lambda, and A Capella Club. Lordino said the clubs needed to talk to him, and he thought they should get all the funding they asked for.

Empfield spoke about the club fair going on today from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., in the Student Center. She also reminded CAB representatives that there is a calendar of events online, so if they are planning an event they should check the calendar to avoid scheduling problems.

Vice Chair of Records, Stephanie Steele, reminded clubs to turn in their updated information. She wants to know the current CAB representatives, each clubs president,

and advisor.

She also reminded clubs to send their constitutions to Lordino. He specified that after they get all the constitution up online, clubs will not have to turn in a constitution every year, unless changes are made to it.

Sinn reminded students that the scavenger hunt is still going on for the Week of Welcome.

Jacob Rissler, student trustee, told students if they have anything they want brought up before the board to contact him before Sept. 6.

Sinn closed up the meeting by talking about a meteor shower that is happening next month. She wanted to put “a bug in your ear” about ideas for maybe a star party the night of the shower.

BRIEFS Brown case at a stand-still Economic education workshop on campus Sarah Townsend News Editor Former CSC student Tre M. Brown, of Donaldsonville, Louisiana, was arrested on a probable cause affidavit citing first degree sexual assault, a class II felony on March 5. The alleged assault occurred off campus, he was not arrested on-campus.

Brown was held in Dawes County Jail on bond starting at 10 percent of $250,000 then reduced to 10 percent of $75,000, after special conditions were imposed that were not open to the public. Brown

posted the $7,500 bail and was released March 16.

A trial date has not been set.

“There have been no further proceedings with the case, nothing else has been filed,” a Dawes County Court spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Numerous attempts to contact the county persecutor in regard to why there has been nothing further filed in this case were unsuccessful.

Brown was a member of the Chadron State football team. He was listed as a defensive back, one of 36 non-numbered players on the 2014 CSC football roster, according to the college’s athletics website.

The Nebraska Council on Economic Education is bringing an interactive workshop to Chadron State College from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 27 in the Burkhiser Technology Complex.

The workshop will cover differentiation in the economics classroom. This will include; vocabulary, K-12 standards, content, and pedagogy. This is a workshop for K-12 teachers and pre-service teachers. All K-12 teachers and pre-service

teachers will receive a $50 stipend, lunch, and economic and financial literacy curriculum.

Jennifer Davidson, assistant professor of practice in economics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; and president of Nebraska council on economic education, is a featured presenter.

Walt Ellison, teacher at Starr’s Mill High School, Fayetteville, Georgia, will also be presenting at the workshop.

Club fair set for today in Student Center The annual club fair will take place from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., today in the Student Center Ballroom. Students will be able to peruse the tables of clubs, talk with other students, and sign-up for clubs they take an interest to. The fair is sponsored by the Office of Student Activities. City council stands behind community pool project Ashley Swanson Managing Editor Voting for the addition of a half-cent tax increase to the Nov. 4 ballot was unanimously approved by the Chadron city council, Monday during a special meeting.

The council originally voted against moving forward with the pool initiative for several reasons, mostly dealing with possible future money issues. The half-cent tax increase is to assist in raising $4 million of the $6 million project. The other $2 million was planned to come from grants.

However, despite the unanimous vote, the increase would have been placed on the November ballot due to the efforts of community members.

On Aug. 14, 52 petition forms were turned in to the county clerks office, and on Aug. 19, the city received certification of 575 valid signatures, which were approved by the clerks office, City Clerk Donna Rust said.

Besides voting on the ballot addition, the council also talked about misconceptions they heard from community members about the pool.

Levi Grant, vice mayor, said people had approached him and said they thought an entirely new pool was being constructed.

While new additions are being constructed, the current shell of the pool will remain where it is. The initial plan is to construct a fitness center and therapy facility alongside the remodeled pool.

Suicides are over-publicized

D

eath is a sensitive subject, one that few of us feel comfortable openly discussing. However, when a celebrity dies, their death is plastered on every cable news channel and social media site for weeks thereafter.

However, when thousands of people die due to unavoidable situations such as disease or war, and only a rare glimpse of these incidents are presented in the media.

Be it a candlelight vigil or a hasty poster board memorial, these stories run for a day or so on major news outlets before they disappear forever.

Several weeks ago, actor Robin Williams committed suicide. His death was shocking, and truly sad, but what followed his death were lengthy broadcasts of photos, news pieces, and even local television stations recounting the last days of his life.

Hundreds of posts flooded news feeds on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media websites. We can be certain that suicide is hardly going to fade from our society anytime soon, but how these stories are publicized needs to change.

Another story of suicide not so widely publicized nationally happened in small-town Nebraska, where the victim’s tragic story was broadcast with the same reverence normally reserved for celebrities.

While there are many reasons why a person commits such a heart-wrenching act, the news coverage of their death should be treated with equal sensitivity paid to someone who dies at no fault of their own. Where are their monthlong news stories? The hundreds of photos and mentions of them on social media sites?

Death is always a tragic and serious subject, however, culturally it would appear as though we value a person and exalt their life more after they commit suicide, and ignore the somber deaths of those who do not.

Post-graduation jitters? Join the club Jeff McFarland Columnist

W

ell, boys and girls, this is the home stretch.

That is, this is my senior year here at CSC, and I’m flying first class by the seat of my pants.

I’ve genuinely enjoyed my time here, for what that’s worth, but in nine short months, the seemingly asinine question of “What are you going to do with your degree?” will be right on my doorstep.

I’m not sure about my fellow seniors, but I am not ready for that. Not that I don’t feel prepared for the so-called real world. If the real world is defined by bills and stress-related ulcers, I’ve got a head start.

It’s more the tackling of the age-old question, “What do you want to do when you graduate?” that intimidates me. I tell people I’m a Literature major, and they assume I want to be a teacher.

When I tell them “no,” they look at me and scoff as though I just walked in with a tattoo on my forehead. Who would do something so stupid as to study in a field he or she is passionate about without any consideration for the monetary value? Could it be that I made the fatal mistake of choosing a major and sticking with it despite my projected annual income?

If you haven’t gathered, I abhor people who tsk-tsk and shake their heads when you give the wrong answer to the “What’s your major?” question. After they finish chewing your ear off about

how it will be hard to find a job (because I totally didn’t know that already), they follow up with the previouslymentioned “What are you going to do with THAT degree? You have to have a plan, you know!”

Last semester in Dr. Sandy Schaefer’s Music Products Seminar class, we were given the invaluable opportunity to speak via Skype with Rick Drumm, former president of D’Addario & Company, Inc., as well as Vic Firth Inc. (major bigwigs in the music products business).

When chronicling his road to the top, Mr. Drumm told us that he was part of the workforce and had been the president of a major company before he ever pursued higher education. He told us about how his work experience helped him better apply what he learned in the classroom. He knew where he wanted to go with his education.

What Mr. Drumm told us stands in stark contrast to the ignorant belief that young adults, many of whom are just beginning to discover their true passions in college, should have their futures perfectly mapped out from their

we asked:

18th birthday to the day they die. It’s not only ignorant, but it’s downright unrealistic.

For any older readership: what did you want to do when you were 18?

21? Are you doing it now? Why not?

What makes asking teenagers to sink thousands of dollars and years of their time into an institution okay, when they aren’t even sure who they are?

Teens are pressured early on to pick both a college and a major, and pick them fast. Godspeed if you decide to change your major a year in and have classes that can’t contribute to a minor or your new major.

People are heartbroken when they suddenly discover maybe they weren’t really in love with music, or maybe they aren’t as good at science as they thought. That’s a paradigm shift in one’s life.

They are often forced to put all of their eggs in one basket with no experience besides high school to back that decision. They claim we’re adults at 18, but treat us like idiotic children with diatribes about how we’ll learn one day and when they were our age. When do we actually reach adulthood? For the critics among you, I doubt you’ll ever reach that point. That’s okay.

I would love to be a professional writer after I graduate. Short fiction would be ideal, but being a columnist of some sort seems a bit more realistic. Is that my plan? I’ve no idea. I’ve got homework due tomorrow, and that’s a bit more pressing than a nine-month-long existential crisis.

Are T.V. award shows relevant?

‘ve been struggling with story ideas, so I asked a question in the newsroom during the editors meeting.

“Did anyone watch the VMAs?” I was met with blank stares, shrugs, and mumbles; “That’s still a thing?”

“What about the Emmys?” Nope.

I was about to tell my peers that they sucked at staying in-touch with pop culture, the words of lyrical genius Ice Cube echoed through time; chiggity-check yourself before you wreck yourself.

The bigger question I need to ask is: does anyone care?

Seeing as I just referenced an early 90s rap artist whose only claim to notoriety lately is selling white people beer, you can see how impossibly milquetoast I am when it comes to what’s relevant.

However, as much as I would like to dismiss the cult of popularity, I have a professional obligation to cater to the masses and ask engaging, entertaining, and thought provoking questions.

However, I’m a pretentious hipster dork and I pride myself on being able to tell people that don’t own a television, so that’s certainly a handicap when it comes to being versed in cultural relevance. Thankfully I can stitch things together with the aid of the internet because: journalism.

Around this time last year, I paid little attention when everyone began complaining about Miley Cyrus masturbating with a giant foam finger on National Television.

The only real reason the event seemed significant to me at the time was the fact that her performance broke the record number of tweets per minute. That tweet

record stood until it was surpassed during the Super Bowl, only to be shattered after Germany’s 7-1 win over Brazil during the world cup finals.

These are facts, which, once again, offer valuable insights into what a dull person I am, and how my job forces me to focus on stupid details.

At this year’s VMAs, Cyrus won Video of the Year for “Wrecking Ball,” but opted to have her date, a young homeless man named Jesse Helt, accept the award on her behalf to raise awareness for homelessness.

I suppose this gesture was meant to atone for past outrageousness. But the media, in its vapid quest to leave no good deed unpunished, revealed that Helt has an outstanding arrest warrant in Oregon for violating parole.

I’m willing to wager that going on T.V. was probably a poor decision on Helt’s part, but then again, it’s not like anyone was really watching anyway. Cyrus gave Helt money to travel home after the VMAs to see his family. I hope he will be able to settle his affairs while he’s there.

Aside from that detail, this year’s VMAs were pretty yawn inducing. Taylor Swift performed “Shake it Off,” her first single since she has re-invented herself as a full-fledged pop star. I’m

fairly certain that Kanye West… let me finish ….is sitting somewhere, boiling in a pit of his own rage. I’m sorry, that joke is probably not funny anymore.

Nicki Minaj also performed her new single, “Anaconda,” which cannibalizes from another 90s rapper who I feel we’d all be better off forgetting about.

One thing that’s certain is that the audience definitely got their fill of vomitinducing conspicuous cellulite jiggling, and it’s with great dismay that I must admit: twerking continues to be a culturally relevant thing.

And while the other artists performed their singles and left the stage, Beyoncé unloaded an impressive 15-minute medley of her best work, during which I was completely blown away by the segment featuring the song “Flawless.”

If you are unfamiliar with the song, it samples part of the TED Talk “We Should All Be Feminists,” delivered by Nigerian feminist author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

During the performance, Beyoncé’s silhouette stood out against the dark background as the word “Feminist,” projected behind her in tall white lettering.

The combination reminded me of installation art pieces by Jenny Holzer or Barbara Kruger.

As Adichie’s voice narrated the definition echoed in the background, it provided a powerful juxtaposition, and was even more nuanced by the crowd shots of her husband, rapper Jay-Z, who held their daughter, Blue Ivy, as both of them looked on from the audience.

Well, I’m back to where I started. I don’t watch T.V., so I don’t know. I guess I’ll ask the question again: Who cares about the Video Music Awards?

Apparently, I do.

weet, succulent smells of cotton candy and hotdogs drifted through the large, student-filled tent during the annual Carnival.

To cool off, snow cones were soaked with different syrup flavors, creating a rainbow treat for passerby’s. Residence Life Association members popped medium-sized bags of buttery popcorn, also accessible for participants enjoyment.

Like any true carnival games were available for students to try their hand and win tickets. Such games included Skee Ball, which had students rolling tennis balls up a ramp in attempts to make it into a hole. If a they made the ball into the hole, they won tickets.

Golf, as simple as it may sound, tested students on their aim with a zigzag mini course. It proved harder than it looked as students placed their ball, lined up the shot, and sighed loudly as the ball narrowly missed its mark.

Knock ‘em Down and the Dart Game also tried students on their aim. Lines stretched far throughout the tent, while participants threw darts in hopes of popping balloons, as others threw softballs at a stack of old fashioned milk bottles.

With tickets in hand, partakers could drop the tickets, with their names written on them, into a couple of bowls for drawing prizes. Students could win a laundry basket, floor lamp, skillet, bean bag chairs, and rug.

Scrimmage sets tempo for upcoming football season Evan Brooks Reporter

The Chadron State College football team held a unique practice on Saturday, as they had a brief match-up against each other in preparation for the upcoming season.

Beginning roughly around 11 a.m., the helmets took the practice field and did what they would do any other day—practice. After about an hour and a half of drill work, the players were split up into teams to put their preparation to the test.

There were enough players that the coaches were able to split them into four teams and have two scrimmages at once. The games only lasted 15-20 minutes, but the team was able to take from it all that they needed to.

“It went well,” tailback, Cody Paul, sophomore of Seal Beach, California, said.

“It was just another day for us to get better, and having some refs there helped us out a lot and let us get a more ‘game day’ feeling.”

According to defensive back, Ryan Wood, sophomore of Stockton, California, the team did not feel too much of a difference despite the circumstances of this practice because of the way they have been coached this year.

“The scrimmage was just like every other practice,” Wood said. “We practice every day at a high tempo like it’s a game so when we get to game day we already know what to expect and are well-prepared.”

Both players added some insight on the upcoming season and what they expect for the team to accomplish.

“This season should be great,” Paul said. “We’ve been training really hard and putting in a lot of film hours to be the best team in the RMAC.” With teams such as CSU-Pueblo and Colorado School of Mines looking to make some noise of their own in the RMAC, Chadron will certainly have their work cut out for them.

“I’m really excited with this year and how the coaches are preparing us to be great,” Wood said. “They are pushing us to not only win the RMAC, but to be the top team in the nation, and the whole team is confident that this year is going to be a great one.”

Eagle football will be officially underway at noon on Saturday, Sept. 6, as the team opens its season against Missouri S&T at Elliott Field.

“Down…..set….hut......hut HIKE!” What better way to kick off the fall semester than with a football movie? Based on the inspiring true story, “When the Game Stands Tall” is a clean, PG-rated breath of fresh air in the midst of steamy, seductive movies shown nowadays.

Taking place in sunny Concord, California, the movie centers on the De La Salle high school football team and their winning streak, which has stood strong for more than a decade.

Under the solid, characterbuilding leadership of Coach Bob Ladouceur, the team has undergone not only grueling practices and games, but also pre-game prayers and teambuilding. Coach Lad, as the team calls him, has taught the boys there is more to life than football. The team lives up to this standard relatively well. After all, it’s easy to stand behind each other when everything is

De La Salle’s endurance is put to the test, however, when the winning streak comes to an abrupt halt during the first game of the 2004 season.

How does one cope with the downfall of losing after winning for so long? How can confidence and control of emotions be regained when all seems lost?

Coach Lad steps in to teach an important lesson—it matters more how you play the game than whether you win or lose.

I was impressed by how relatable the movie was. Just as each of us has his or her own challenges and struggles to overcome, so does each character in the film.

Whether it is as routine as enduring one more draining practice before the big game or as tragic as losing someone close to you, every viewer will be able to relate to one character or another in some way.

“When the Game Stands Tall” was a touchdown with me and is a must see for all who desire more out of life than just winning or losing.

Do not do drugs. Don’t run from the uniformed officers when they arrive to handcuff you for the illegal activities that have possibly been partaken in. Do find a friend to drive you home if you happen to be even slightly inebriated. Do not jam out to your Walkman if you happen to be walking alone at night. Avoid dark allies and creepy dim streets.

These are all sound pieces of advice that were offered to new CSC students at the campus safety presentation Monday night in the Student Center Ballroom. Campus resource officer Shane Sanders and Chadron’s Chief of Police Tim Lordino presented, along with a member of campus security.

Sanders covered issues that are impor-

tant for all students to be aware of and not just new students. These included how to be safe when walking around at night, safety in the residence halls, at parties, in the parking area, how to deal with bullying, cyber bullying, and sexual assault.

The students were informed about how to navigate CSC’s security website that is linked into csc.edu. If students go to the CSC web page and click the Current Students tab there is a link at the bottom of the drop down menu titled All Current Student Links. Under the College Life section find the security link, and then find Report a Crime on the left side of the page. This tab will bring them to a form where students can anonymously report anything from a light that needs repaired to a sexual assault, and everything in between. Once submitted, the form goes to CSC Security and is then handled by the administration or the police. Stu-

dents are encouraged to use this website to their advantage.

Lordino talked about the repercussions of underage drinking. He informed students of the different ways in which they can incur a minor in possession. An MIP can be written if the officers smell alcohol on a minor’s breath, if the officers see an alcoholic beverage in a minor’s hand, if a minor is in a car that has alcohol in it, and if minors are at a party where alcohol is being consumed.

Lordino also talked about the implications of drinking and driving for minors and those who are over the age of 21. Minors caught drinking and driving will be charged with a minor driving under the influence. Minors age 18 and over caught drinking and driving will be jailed. For those who are 21 and older a DUI will be written if they have a blood alcohol content (BAC) greater than 0.08 percent.
