Enrollment beats national trend Ashley Swanson News Editor As college enrollments decrease nationwide, Chadron State is bucking that trend, keeping just above the national average, Jon Hansen, interim vice president of enrollment management and marketing, said. “The fact that we’re up half a percent is good,” he said. As of Tuesday, enrollment was 2,937, which is up .24 percent from last year’s figure of 2,390 at this time. Enrollment in 2011 was 2,931; in 2012, it was 3,005. In May, The Huffington Post reported that college enrollment nationwide has been slowly declining by 2.3 percent since spring 2013. The National Student Clearinghouse, a source for education verification and student educational outcomes research, stated in the Huffington Post that Midwest schools saw a 2.6 percent drop in enrollment—the biggest decrease among the regions. The article states that drops in enrollment might be the result of students returning to the workforce, since the economy is slowly improving. CSC’s incoming freshman class totaled 773, but there was a drop in the number of students matriculating from freshman to sophomores, and juniors to seniors. From fall 2012 to now, the sophomore class dropped 7 percent from 408 to 376 students. The senior class dropped almost .5 percent from 646 to 643 from 2012-13. “I don’t know yet why,” Hansen said about the attrition. Hansen, CSC President Randy Rhine, and Vice President of Academic Affairs Charles Snare, are working to figure out why there are lower numbers of students in certain areas, as there are several elements they need to consider, Hansen said. “It’s important for us to discover [the reason],” he said. “If there’s something we need to do, then we’ll fix it.” Although the reason is not yet clear, Hansen expects to see CSC’s enrollment exceed 3,000 at the conclusion of the first eight-week classes.
