Library renovations underway for new year Shawn Hartman Contributor Welcome back new and returning Chadron State College students to the start of a new academic year! As you get into (or back into) the swing of college life, please take time to visit the Reta King Library located in the center of the campus.

Since the concept of academic libraries has become somewhat outdated, in that the design of the traditional academic library does not encourage collaborative group work (e.g., group student rooms, tutoring, student lounges, IT assistance); access to food and drink within the library (coffee shops); flexible learning environments (scattered computer stations); and inviting atmospheres (comfortable soft seating), the King Library is undergoing renovations to satisfy these missing pieces.

The library, along with the college administration, is in the midst of shifting the King Library in the direction of a Learning Commons area. This transformation will address

the student and faculty needs by bringing together technology, tutoring, content, and services in an upgraded physical space that provides an engaging environment different from that of a typical library. The concept of a library learning commons is a “one-stop” learning oriented and learner centered space that is powered by the students, faculty, information technologists, tutoring coordinators, and librarians, all brewed together!

While it is hard to believe another summer is gone and the fall semester at CSC has begun, we all have an exciting, challenging, and rewarding semester ahead of us – particularly at the King Library. The entire Learning Commons staff is here to assist with all of your library service and research needs. EDITORIAL–THE EAGLE’S VIEW

Opportunity starts with you

A

s a new academic year unfolds here at Chadron State College, the first edition of The Eagle is resting in your very hands, (or for our web readers, on a computer screen.)

We know it is hard for you to contain your excitement, or so we tell ourselves, lying through our teeth as we sing epitaphs to the dying summer. But cheer up; there are boundless opportunities that lay ahead of you.

The campus will soon be a bustling junction, alive and full of people once again.

Students on skateboards will roll up and down the sidewalks. The smells of the cafeteria will fill the nostrils of many a patron, and tug tauntingly at the stomachs of those who have not purchased a meal plan.

The student center on campus is a primary social setting, and you can take a break or occupy your free time with late nights at the pit, as well as events sponsored by every club under the sun. Just remember that involvement starts with you, and you get only what you put in.

Student government will be clearing out the cobwebs as the gears of democracy lurch from their summer slumber. Student Senate and the Campus Activities Board will renew the dialogue and make decisions that affect all of us.

You don’t have to follow campus politics like a hawk: The Eagle publishes a weekly recap of what happened in student government, so even the busiest student can stay informed.

And of course the reason why we are all here: to learn.

Eager professors will be gleaning through lectures and presentations, assigning readings and encouraging discussions. Each passing day moves you a bit closer to your graduation and earning that sought after degree. We hope you progress and grow into a reflection of what CSC has to offer.

Take an active interest in your education, that way you will be ready to serve not just the community, but develop the skills that help serve yourself. Be aware of the fact that you are making an impact, no matter how small or insignificant you feel it may be.

This year will be a time for experience, whether it is the same routine for returning students, or an exciting adventure for freshmen.

Calm your freshman jitters W hen I signed up for fall courses this year, I felt a strange mixture of feelings. Excitement and anxiety, stress and hope.

However, these feelings are nothing compared to the feelings of new college students. With a college freshman in the family, I have heard the ever-growing worries of new students. My younger sister has expressed her concerns constantly to Sara Labor me. What if I don’t fit in? What if I Lifestyles Editor don’t like my classes? What if I can’t make friends? What if I don’t like my major?

I decided to write some friendly advice as a college pro to assuage the fears of this year’s incoming class. While college should be nerve-wracking, it’s not something to be terrified of.

First, it’s important to remember that there’s always somewhere to fit in in college. As a high school student, I often felt left out. Of course, in high school, popularity seems key. That’s not so in college.

With more clubs and activities, there’s always a place to make new friends and be a part of something. I tried it all; choir, youth group, gamers club, you name it. It may take a while, but college is about trying new things until you find your niche. I finally wandered into the newsroom and have been happily writing for the school newspaper since.

College freshman should always be trying new clubs or activities until they find that one place where they feel most at home.

Second, the roommate issue. When I walked into my first dorm room the first thing I noticed was a picture of her shaking hands with John McCain. I must admit, I was nervous we wouldn’t get along. We had different political affiliations, different tastes in music, different schedules,

and different lives. Our first semester, we didn’t do much hanging out. Three years later, she became one of my closest friends.

Some people think that it’s a good thing to room with people they already know. I can guarantee that this is a bad idea. When people room with friends from high school, they don’t get the opportunity to bond with new people.

New roommates may seem scary, but they will introduce you to new things outside of your normal comfort zone.

A new roommate may even end up becoming a best friend.

Third, don’t worry about your major. Perhaps this is different advice than a parent or a counselor might give, but as a seasoned pro, I have to impart this wisdom on a younger generation.

You think you’ve got your future figured out? Think again. You’re only eighteen, your interests will change.

Sixty-one percent of college students change their major at least once before they graduate. It’s ok to be part of that statistic. Choosing what you want to do for the rest of your life is a big decision to make at eighteen. So make it after you’ve explored your interests instead.

Then there are the little pieces of advice that any college freshman may have heard already. Sit in the front, it impresses the teacher. Buy your books from Amazon, not the bookstore. The library isn’t that scary. Try to avoid eight o’ clock classes. Etc., etc.

Most importantly, it’s important for you younger students to remember that college is fun. It’s not meant to be something huge and scary.

There are always new friends, new activities, and new creative outlets. It should give you nervous butterflies, but in the excited way, rather than the terrified way. College is about learning, not just in the classroom, but in life.

Targeted advertising: a digital dilemma Spike Jordan Managing Editor

E

arlier this summer, National Security Agency whistle-blower Edward Snowden revealed details via Wikileaks about PRISM, the agency’s covert wiretapping operation.

This revelation devastated the nation’s credibility both domestic and abroad, leaving many unanswered questions about our government’s role in providing security and respecting the privacy of individual citizens.

Several aspects of the Snowden ordeal have turned me into a technophobe, just short of the tin foil-hat. However, my angst isn’t really about the government tracking and storing my every move online.

Admittedly, my online presence was boring. I wasted an immeasurable amount of time on Facebook, but I really didn’t embrace social media as communal catharsis, a “complaint book,” if you will.

Over the summer I deactivated my Facebook, figuring

that the digital village can carry on without one more idiot.

But what has mainly sparked my apprehension is a concept called “targeted advertising.” A long known but rarely publicized fact about Facebook is that it silently collects all information users input, aggregates that information, and then sells the information in bulk to advertisers.

Furthermore, Facebook uses specific algorithms to direct advertisements to users, targeting them with a customized stream of ads and promoted content which appears in the users ad-bars and newsfeeds.

At first I attempted to use the AdBlock Plus plugin for Firefox, which silently blocks advertising scripts from most web pages. However, this wasn’t enough. Even if I couldn’t see the ads, that information was still being collected, broadcast, and used for profit by someone else.

I don’t tolerate my digital activities being tracked, and I certainly don’t want my information being translated to dollars in someone else’s pocket. The clearest solution I could find is to opt out and drop off the grid. My advice is to ignore social media and leave the visage-tome to trap someone else.

Blogs square-up against Sakai

T

here’s a new kid on the block, and he’s looking to brawl with the ring’s reigning champ, Sakai.

For students new to online classes, a novel concept to some erstwhile high schoolers, Sakai is Chadron State’s online portal for web-based and distance-learning courses. Also called CSC Online, this service allows students to access the pages for all their classes and find notes, homework, and tests professors post.

With the simple entry of ID and password, students can enjoy the realization that they forgot to take a test before its time limit, or that the slides from the presentation they missed aren’t available. They can slowly become near-sighted, as they squint to see the micro-fonts of their peer’s forum posts, and they can fruitlessly email their absent adjunct, desperate for the never-coming response.

This summer I enrolled in a online course, ENG 431/531 Topics in English: The Graphic Novel in the ELA Classroom, but when I logged into Sakai, I found no page. My professor, Elisabeth Ellington, had opted for a blog-based class, where students would post a “response” to each novel they read, culminating in a final project in four weeks.

I’d never seen a challenger to Sakai before, and this rookie stepped into the ring with lots of promise. In this corner, weighing 3.76 kilobytes, the reigning champ, Sakai. Opposing him, weighing 15.97 kilobytes, the spunky competitor, Wordpress blog-class. Let’s get ready to rumble!

EASY TO USE: Although the blog-class, based in the Wordpress free blogmaker, might be startling and new, there are plenty of online tutorials available. Wordpress is a global structure with thousands of users, and plenty have made youtube videos for the newbie’s benefit. I remember my first freshman exploration of Sakai, the navigation confused me, and each professor used it differently. Sakai does boast a 24/7 help hotline, but it’s like a man with a cane: he’s glad it’s there, but would rather he didn’t need it at all.

TECHNICAL ISSUES: I have just spent the last 15 minutes sculpting the perfect Sakai forum post. It’s concise, deep, and is sure to blow away my half-paragraph peers. I turn away to pour myself a congratulatory root-beer, and Sakai times out! My hard work disappears in a puff of log-in screen.

Next time I’m wiser, I write everything in Word, then copy and paste. The text appears in a jumble of HTML, or with letters missing. The blog-class never had these issues, and the format allowed for more creativity, with pictures, links, videos, and a just plan attractive look.

PUBLIC: This is a double-edged sword for the blog-class. Everything you post is on the internet. It’s public. Someone can Google the novel you responded to, find your post, comment on it, plagiarize it, make fun of you for it, whatever.

The public aspect is good, because it builds your online presence (an important aspect in the modern work-force). It

Your classmates can also see it. They can post praise or make you feel inferior with their superior additions. This is like a Sakai forum, but it encompasses all work.

Our final projects were posted publicly. I actually liked this feature, as it challenged me to meet or exceed my classmates’ work. I usually don’t benefit from forced-response forum replies, or even from the presence of my peers in online classes.

The blog-class made it a cumulative effort. We all maintained the blog together.

PERMANENCE: A blog post, once posted, is kept. The work does not expire with the class time-frame, like a Sakai course. Your work is preserved for the posterity of generations, or your own personal use. Let’s say you wanted to reuse a particularly snappy Oscar Wilde quote, or revamp an insight you had about Kafka. Your original material is still there, unlike a Sakai forum or assignment which has long-since perished.

The negative side of public, online format classes is that tests, quizzes, or basic questionanswer homework assignillustration by Spike Jordan ments are a challenge to create. Such is not the stuff of blogs. But a teacher who opts for the creative, open-format of a blog class probably doesn’t put too much weight on the educational value of those anyway.

So the rookie contender won my heart. I agreed with Ellington’s support of the blog-class when she said, “all the features you’d normally access in Sakai—Assignments, Lessons, Discussion Forums, Announcements—will be found in one central location on our course blog.”

Admittedly, the blog-class is not for all curriculums. But blogging could be a powerful, connective tool in any class, if done right.

Blog-classes are already sparring with Sakai for Liberal Arts and Humanities courses, and if professors found a creative alternative for those areas, I’m confident the internet has more surprising tools to re-think online classes, for the benefit of students and teachers.

Sakai might need to throw in the towel.

NCAA suspends Taylor 6 games

Starting safety pays the price now for credit-hour shortfall two years ago Andrew Martin Reporter The NCAA suspended CSC starting safety Trelan Taylor, 22, for the first six games this year for failing to earn sufficient credit hours to be eligible for the 2011 season.

The suspension came after CSC officials self reported Taylor’s credit shortfall to the NCAA. Athletic Director Joel R. Smith said that, to remain eligible from year to year, players must earn 24 credit hours annually. Taylor only earned 21 prior to the 2011 season and should have been declared ineligible back then.

“It fell through the cracks,” Smith said, adding that as soon as the school discovered the missing hours, it reported the infraction to the NCAA. To ensure this does not happen again, Smith said the athletic department is making changes to CSC’s compliance program.

On Tuesday, Taylor questioned why it took so long to dicover the infraction and said he was disappointed because he is in his senior year and will miss half the season.

But, he said is sure the Eagles will overcome his absence.

“I am fully confident that our team will make the proper adjustments and take care of business,” Taylor said.

Though his retirement was the talk of campus last year, former Athletic Director Brad Smith won’t say his final goodbyes for a few weeks. The NSCS Board of Trustees hired him in July to serve as an assistant to President Randy Rhine through the end of August.

Albeit temporary, Smith will stay on through Aug. 31 to help with the transition in the athletic department as newly hired Athletic Director Joel R. Smith takes over.

“It’s reasonable because I’ve been here for 26 years,” Brad Smith said Tuesday. “I have the most experience.”

Outgoing Smith’s knowledge of everything athletic at CSC, should help incoming Smith learn contacts for CSC sports teams, including ticket takers, security personnel, flag bearers and others.

A comedy for this generation that kicks butt Sara Labor Lifestyles Editor Today, trying to find a good comedy can be difficult. Every year, comedic movies come out, but they are often crass, or simply dumb humor. It’s nearly impossible to find a comedy that is not only for entertainment, but also a piece of fine art.

However, the 2010 movie “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World,” is more than a funny romance movie. It is a true masterpiece.

The movie revolves around Scott Pilgrim, a twenty-two yearold bass guitarist who falls for pink haired punk Ramona Flowers. Ramona’s heart doesn’t come for free though; Scott has to defeat Ramona’s seven evil exes before he can win hear heart.

Three years and four hundred re-watches after the movie first came out, I decided to check out the comic books. Reading these fantastically hilarious graphic novels is much like watching the movie. Now, I’m one of those people who is very critical about books turned into movies, so you can believe me when I say that the movie is exactly like the books.

This is one of the charms of “Scott Pilgrim.” Although it is a live-action movie, watching it is much like flipping through a comic book. There are sound bubbles even though we can physically hear the sounds, and headings that come with new scenes. “Ramona come closer” hovers on a blank screen, and when we hear a strangled cry of “NOOOOO!” the word hovers above Scott’s head.

This comic book approach does a lot for the story visually. acting style, and you get a non-stop laugh-fest.
