Vietnamese student hosts international luncheon Kylee Odenbach Reporter The Chadron State College International Office hosted an International luncheon on Thursday, Jan. 25 from 12-1 p.m. in the Scottsbluff Room of the Student Center.

The luncheon was open to the public. The International Office expected 50 people, and about 40 people attended. Students, staff members, and other community members attended the event.

“The purpose of holding these luncheons are to internationalize the campus and let people know what international students bring to our college,” said Angie Camerlinck,

Cardinal Key is hosting a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Feb. 5 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Feb. 6, in the Student Center. If students are interested, they can sign up from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Jan. 29 in the Student Center. Students can sign up on the day of, but are subject to wait for an available time. CSC CDC selling “Village Pie Maker” pies The CSC Child Development Center has announced that they are selling “Village Pie Maker” pies to fundraise for their Nature Explore Outdoor Learning Environment. The CSC Nature Explore Outdoor Learning Environment is meant to help children reconnect with nature and the natural world. Pies are sold for $15 each and payment can be made with either cash or check. The available flavors are: apple, berry medley, blackberry, blueberry, cherry, peach, raspberry/peach, rhubarb and strawberry/rhubarb. Orders will be taken from Jan. 22 to Feb. 9. The frozen pies will be delivered and ready for pickup at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20, in Burkhiser 231.

This luncheon featured Yen Nguyen, 19, a sophomore of Hanoi, Vietnam. She presented a power point at the event that described her home country and her culture.

She explained some of the differences between the United States and Vietnam.

“The best part about the event is that I get to communicate and share with other people about my culture,” said Yen Nguyen.

Vietnamese chicken was the meal provided at the event. The attendees of the event could eat the cultural dish while learning about Vietnam.

“It was great to learn more about Vietnam while eating good food,” said Michele Rickenbach, the assistant registrar at Chadron State College.

Lifestyles Editor President Donald Trump focused on America and some of his plans for the remainder of his term at his first State of the Union address Tuesday night.

Trump’s speech touched on several hot button topics including immigration and national security.

However, Trump’s main focus of the speech was “America first,” concentrating on the goal of repairing the nation’s infrastructure and continuing to see employment and economic growth within the U.S. Trump also made a point to address the lack of unity between representatives in Congress.

“Tonight, I call upon all of us to set

aside our differences, to seek out common ground and to summon the unity we need to deliver for the people … we were elected to serve,” Trump said.

Trump acknowledged several guests to during his speech, including North Korean defector Ji Seong-ho, the parents of two teenage girls who were murdered by the New York gang MS-13, 12-year-old Preston Sharp who started a movement to plant flags on the graves of veterans and several military personnel.

“This is our new American moment.

There has never been a better time to start living the American dream,” Trump said.

Spring Daze budget presented to Senate Nalani Stewart News Editor The Spring Daze budget was presented to Senate. The breakdown of the budget goes as follows: · $1,000 for 200 t-shirts · $200 for prizes · $600 for decorations · $400 for food/water · $2,750 for club budgets ($50 per Club) · $8,000 for inflatables · $2,600 for Bongo Ball/Bubble Soccer · $4,200 for staff shirts, hats, visors, etc. · $1,300 for visors/hats · $800 for Nostalgic items · $400 for the bull riding competition prizes · $1,000 for the Funny Farm Petting Zoo · $2,500 for DJ

The total presented cost comes to $26,450.

Senate has a current budget of $8,646.40 in unallocated funds.

In another matter, applications for student trustee are due by noon Feb. 9, to Pat Beu. Applications require three letters of recommendation, and a statement explaining why one would be the person for the job.

The court is looking for a new Solicitor General, and have two applicants for the justice position. If anyone is interested, they should contact Chief Justice Samantha Merrill, or Senate President Carly Slaught.

“We will get an election timeline out to you guys very quickly,” said Merrill. “The court will hopefully be full soon.

We have two very qualified applicants that we can select from, and we are still looking for a Solicitor General.”

In another matter, Senate has begun to enact the Feminine Hygiene Initiative on campus. Senate allocated $1,580 last school year to purchase 4,800 feminine products which

will be placed in the Student Center restrooms.

CAB hosted their first Free Movie Night of the semester Sunday with a turnout of 179 students. CAB is also hosting a lip-sync battle Feb. 15, and is planning a pizza and PJ party.

CAB also allocated $450 to fund the band club for the purchase of a series of entrepreneurial online courses for the Music Department.

Budget packets, and trip packets will be sent out to clubs Feb. 5, and the CAB meeting Feb. 20 will be converted to a budget workshop to help students understand the process of budget hearings. Budget hearings will be held March 19-22, and appeals will be held March 26-27.

Senate discussed incentives for senators as a method of recruitment. Suggestions for incentives for senators included scholarships, class credit, jackets, and leadership certificates.

Senate tabled the discussion for the incentives until next week, hoping to get more input from other students.

Nesheim requests student input on co-curricular outcomes Loren Ritter Sports Editor David Nesheim, interim Director of Assessment, distributed Co-Curricular Surveys to those present at the CAB meeting, Tuesday. The Co-Curricular Surveys pertain to how well constructed the Co-curricular Outcomes are for Chadron State College.

“Outcomes are supposed to help us as an institution all do the same things that we value-the same things that we think are important,” Nesheim said. “We have to have co-curriculars cover just about every damn thing we do on campus that takes

place outside of the classroom.”

The Higher Learning Commision (HLC) is a nonprofit organization that sets standards for CSC to meet in order to be accredited by the Department of Education. Accreditation is important because it is used to determine if an institution is working up to standards, is eligible for federal student assistance and a variety of other reasons.

The HLC now requires that outcomes for co-curriculars are established. HLC Staff are in the process of developing a final version that encompasses criteria for Co-Curricular Outcomes.

“HLC’s goal is to have final revisions

approved by the Board in February 2019 and go into effect in fall 2019 or fall 2020, depending on the extent of the changes” states hlcommission.org.

Club representatives were asked to pass on the survey and pertaining information to others. The Co-Curricular Surveys are for students, faculty and administration to complete. The survey can be found at https://www.surveymonkey. com/r/9CHXX32 Later during the meeting, Hannah Fessler, junior of Alliance, was nominated and accepted the new position as Chair of Public Relations for CAB. Ashley Goad, junior of Pueblo West, Colorado, mentioned

that her position as Student Trustee is looking to be filled beginning at the end of her term in May. Student Trustee applications were sent out to student emails and can be found at the Senate Office in Crites Hall. They are due by noon Feb. 9.

Last Sunday, 179 Students participated in Free Movie Night at the Eagle Theatre.

The Free Movie Nights for the rest of the spring semester are Feb. 18, March 18 and April 15.

Feb. 15, CAB and The Pit are hosting a “Lip Sync Battle” from 7 to 11 p.m. in the Student Center. Senators are still needed for BEAMSS, Liberal Arts, At Large, Edna, High Rise, and Eagle Ridge.

No longer a bystander: stand up to sex crimes On Jan. 24, Larry Nassar, former USA Gymnastics national team osteopathic physician, was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison after over 150 women accused him of sexually abusing them. After he serves the 60-year sentence for child pornography.

This is one of the biggest and disturbing sexual abuse scandals in sports history.

According to Attorney General Bill Schuette, the assaults have been traced all the way back to 1998, with victims just 6-yearsold. To make the case even more disturbing, it appears that adults all around Nassar have been enabling these actions for years.

USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University, where Nassar was a faculty member, have been accused of enabling his predatory behaviors for nearly a quarter of a century by paying victims to keep quiet about their assault.

USA Gymnastics has been accused of covering up the sexual abuse by paying McKayla Maroney $1.25 million to sign a non-disclousure agreement.

As if things were not bad enough, information recently leaked revealing that 144 Michigan State University athletes have come forward about being sexually assaulted by Nassar.

Worst of all, former MSU gymnastics coach, Kathie Klages, has also been accused of pressuring victims of the assaults to stay silent and has been aware of allegations against Nassar as early as 1997.

Similar allegations regarding students and players have been seen across other sports, such as men’s basketball and football players, since as early as 2007.

It’s an undeniable fact that sexual assault is something that has been given more attention recently with movements such as #MeToo

and #Time’sUp. While the crime itself may not be on the rise, the media attention being given to it and the women speaking up against their perpetrators has been a developing.

A painful statistic, according to www.itsonus.org, is only 20 percent of female student victims of sexual assault, ages 18-24, report their cases to law enforcement.

Action needs to be taken on such an epidemic. We can only lock up so many predators and only for so long. Everything has its limit, and there comes a point when action needs to be taken.

We need to teach younger generations how to combat sexual abuse and how to not be a bystander or be an enabler in these situations.

This case is a prime example of what can happen when we hush horrific cases and don’t face what is truly happening in our country.

Stand to make a change.

Find 10 things you love about yourself

Columnist We live in an era where everyone is on their phones all the time. Some people wake up and the first thing they do is check their phone. I can’t lie, I, myself am guilty of doing it a few times.

Social media can be a great place to stay in touch with friends and family who live far away. It can also allow you to share with your friends what you have been up to. Unfortunately, it can also be a very troubling place.

Most of us have been on Instagram or Facebook and follow our favorite celebrities. We see them hit the beaches while on vacation in their swimsuits with summer bodies in January. We even see makeup artists posting insanely cool makeup designs that you can’t even dream of doing.

But how does that impact the way we think about and see ourselves?

I think social media can have a terrible effect on people. I’ve heard everyone

from young girls to adult men compare themselves to people they see on social media. We look at people on social media and often feel insecure about ourselves. I am guilty of scrolling through Instagram and feeling guilty about not looking like some of the fitness gurus I follow.

Realizing I was doing this I was determined to change my mindset because of how I started to view myself.

I started by writing down my favorite things about myself. I began by writing 10 things down on a sticky note that I felt good about myself every day.

Sometimes, I wouldn’t fill up all 10. Regardless, I hung them up on my wall so I could see them. As I progressed through this journey of finding 10 things that I loved about myself I began to notice a trend.

At the very beginning, I put a variety of things on the list, ranging from how my hair looked that day to the outfit I picked out. The more I did the sticky notes I noticed the list changing. Some of the ones from my latest sticky note was my smile and my encouraging nature.

Notice the difference? At the beginning I was so focused on how I looked on the outside that it was preventing me from seeing what I really liked about myself.

The sticky note that I just made only had seven things on it and it ranged from my biceps to my laugh. I have learned that there is more to my beauty than what people see on the outside or what people might consider “Instagram worthy.”

I have encouraged myself to look deeper than just my skin. Not everything that I like about me can be noticed in a photo.

This week I challenge you to take part in this sticky note challenge.

You don’t have to ingest Tide pods to achieve this challenge. You just have to sit down and try for seven days to think of 10 new things everyday that you like about yourself. If you can’t think of 10, that’s alright. Try your best. And maybe, if you feel a little ambitious, give a sticky note to a friend of your favorite things about them.

The purpose of this challenge is to not only focus on your physical attributes, but the other features that make you you.

But don’t feel like you can’t include physical attributes.

At the end of the seven days look back and see all the things that you wrote down. Encourage your friends to try it too. This challenge is to help you see all the wonderful things that make up the wonderful being that you are.

Spoon or Fork: The ultimate debate Abigail Swanson Contributor You’re celebrating a friend’s birthday, just setting down to a huge slice of chocolate swirl cake with cookies and cream ice cream. You reach out to select your utensil, then freeze. Fork or spoon, which should you choose?

This discussion has been going on since the first combination of cake and ice cream and still has no perfect solution. The fork is preferred for cake, and the spoon is the only way to eat ice cream, but which should you choose when eating them together?

The spoon’s main asset is its curved surface, useful for scooping up that last bit of ice cream left on the bowl or plate. However, the concave nature of the spoon does not translate well to cutting bites of cake.

In fact, with a spoon you are more carving than cutting the cake.

I must confess that the spoon is my preferred utensil, and I quite enjoy the idea of carving out bits of food from the mountain of cake and ice cream. Nevertheless, I believe the fork deserves a fair trial.

The fork is wonderful for slicing off bits of cake and then stabbing the pieces to raise to your lips. Forks allow you to admire

the perfect symmetry of the cake. However, forks are not made for eating ice cream.

In fact, the only ice cream that can be eaten with a fork is the kind that’s hard and frozen. If that is the kind of ice cream you prefer, then go for a fork and enjoy your perfect cake bites.

This issue is not black and white, for there are other factors that influence your selection. For example, does it make a difference if served on a plate or a in bowl?

Personally, I prefer a curved spoon for bowls and a flat fork for plates. For many people it makes no difference. What if, instead of cake, you are eating pie with ice

cream? Are sporks a possibility? Would you ever consider using both utensils and switching between bites?

It all comes down to whether you like cake or ice cream best. Those who love cake prefer forks, and those who adore ice cream prefer spoons. Each utensil has itvs merits.

So take a moment next time you eat cake and ice cream and think about why you chose your utensil. Ask your friends what they think, but be warned, strong feelings can get involved.

And please, if it’s your birthday party, make sure your guests have a choice.

Life comes before homework Lydia Privett Opinion Editor Ever since high school, I’ve been an overachiever, people-pleaser, and school has always come before everything. Coming from a small high school, I didn’t have much competition and it was easier to stand out. Upon coming to college, it didn’t take long to realize that once you come to college, you’re really not all that special.

No one’s here anymore to pat you on the back for doing a good job. It’s cut throat, and it’s scary to think that we’re not even in the “real world” that our parents and adults love telling us the horrors of.

One of the hardest realities I had to

quickly learn to accept in college was the fact that it’s okay to not get all A’s.

Of course, it’s something I always strive for, but I’ve learned that it’s surely not the end of the world if I don’t get an A on that test that I spent weeks preparing for.

Sometimes, it just takes a reminder that a B is still technically above average.

Another harsh reality I had to learn

in college was that, simply, not everyone’s going to like you. You can’t please everyone, it’s an unrealistic goal. Coming to this realization, I experienced one of the most anxiety-inducing and alleviating times in my life. Even today, I’m still adjusting to this and have to remind myself from time to time of this. Especially in terms of professors, I’ve had to accept that not all of them will love me as much as my teachers in high school did. And you know what? That’s OK. Finally, one of my favorite things that I’ve learned in college that changed my life is that school isn’t everything.

In high school, I would never entertain the idea of going over to a friend’s house on a school night, even if it was to do homework. I had this preconceived

notion that I wouldn’t get anything done there and would have too much fun.

That’s right, I was afraid that I would have too much fun and wouldn’t get any homework done. Being in college, and also, by a part of me growing up, I realized that life comes before school.

If your friend is crying, comfort them.

If your mother wants to talk, talk to her.

If your friends are going sledding, go with them. I don’t care if you have three hours of homework to do, if your family wants to go out to eat, go with them.

You can always finish homework later or get one bad grade; but life … you can’t push that off for later. You only have one chance. And no homework assignment is more important than actually living your life.

Academic writing is over-the-top Brianna Wilson Reporter It’s safe to say that everyone reads an academic article at some point in their college career. Whether you’ve read an article as an assignment or in tangent with some research paper, you probably know what I am talking about. And, if you’re like me, you have noticed how difficult these articles are to read.

There’s a free, online editing app called Hemingway Editor that is geared toward making your writing simpler and more interesting. In short, it color codes your writing and gives it a readability grade.

Out of curiosity one day while I was struggling to get through a particularly dry article, I copied and pasted it into the Hemingway Editor. What I found wasn’t surprising, but it was discouraging and mildly frustrating. The readability grade was 12, but the app suggested a nine given the context of the paper’s subject.

Nearly every sentence was highlighted in red, meaning it was “very hard to read.” The few that weren’t highlighted in red, were highlighted in yellow, standing for “hard to read.” A shocking number of phrases had “simpler alternatives” – meaning, in my mind, that they were using fancier

sounding words ... because? Most of the paper was written in passive voice – which makes it duller. And it was loaded with adverbs. Adverbs are great every now and then, but when you’re using four and five in a row – all meaning the same thing – it slows down the reading. Your mind feels like it’s trudging through a bog. Stephen King once said, “The road to hell is paved with adverbs.” I couldn’t agree more, King.

I had expected it to be bad, but that seemed extreme.

And it got me thinking: why is an academic article so difficult to understand? What’s the point in that? Isn’t the purpose of an academic article to share the author’s beliefs and findings? So why make it so hard to understand? I’ve been in college for four years.

I’m used to reading academic works and I enjoy the challenge in reading authors such as Shakespeare. But Shakespeare, as with many fictitious works, is meant for interpretation.

It’s safe to say that an academic article isn’t supposed to be interpreted. It’s supposed to lay it bare so you can take in those ideas and reflect, drawing your own conclusions and forming your own opinions.

If you want to share your knowledge in a scholarly work, then do. But don’t make it so hard to understand that the common person isn’t going to be able to or want to read it.

It does no good to write a bunch of words and sound smart

when no one is going to be able to understand. You’re not sharing anything, at that point.

My English teacher in high school used to criticize our writing if we started using words that sounded fancier so we could look smarter. We weren’t allowed to use any word in our writing unless we knew what it meant and could dictate that meaning clearly. And we were to write as concisely and as clearly as possible. She would tell us that if the lunch ladies couldn’t understand it, then it needed more work.

This advice has stuck with me since my freshman year in high school and it’s advice that I always try to write by.

If the average person off the street can’t understand my ideas, then I don’t know them well enough myself or haven’t communicated them properly.

There are two clear benefits to this.

One: If John Doe on the street can understand what I’m trying to say, then so can the academic audience.

Two: John Doe deserves to hear my ideas just as much as those academics do.

So, keep that in mind when you’re writing your next research paper: the mark of a good writer isn’t sounding smart, it’s being able to clearly communicate.

And for everyone who struggles through academic articles to write those literature reviews? I hear you. I hear you loud and clear. And I so feel for you.

The dual against the Adams State Grizzlies, Friday, resulted in several exciting matches, but the Eagles lost with a final score of 33-11.

The first match started the Eagles off right.

Jacob Otuafi, 157-pound redshirt sophomore of Sparks, Nevada, scored 10 points against Joshua Salas, redshirt junior of San Tan Valley, Arizona, in the first period alone. Otuafi finished the match with a technical fall against Salas, 15-0. It was a comeback for Otuafi, who lost 17-0 by technical fall against New Mexico Highland’s Kellen Pelzel, 165-pound redshirt senior of Centralia, Washington, Wednesday.

Rulon Taylor, 285-pound redshirt junior of Curtis, lost in double overtime in a close match against Adam State’s Tuli Laulu, a 285-pound fifth year senior of Peyton, Colorado. Wednesday, Taylor won by decision against New Mexico Highland’s Gabe Escobedo, a 285-pound junior of Caldwell, Idaho.

The only other win for the Eagles against Adams State came from Joshua Miller, 141-pound redshirt junior of Bennett, Colorado, who pinned Marquel Parks, 133-pound freshman of Tacoma, Washington.

The dual against New Mexico Highlands University, Wednesday, ended in a loss for the Eagles with a final score of 26-13.

Eagles lost two wrestlers, Brock Thumm, 141-pound redshirt junior of Watervliet, gan, and Devin Stork, 184-pound freshman of Canton, South Dakota, in the dual esday due to illness.

Eagles will gear up again at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, for the RMAC tournament in do Springs, Colorado.

A win over the New Mexico Highlands University Cowgirls broke a 13 game losing streak for the Chadron State women’s basketball team.

The Eagles traveled to Pueblo, Colorado, to take on the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves on Friday and lost 76-57. The Eagles then traveled to Las Vegas, New Mexico to compete against the Cowgirls and won 66-57. This moves the Eagles to a 4-17 overall record and a 2-13 conference record.

Senior Kalli Feddersen of Rawlins, Wyoming, led the team in scoring on Friday night with 16 points. Freshman Taryn Foxen of Aurora, Colorado, scored 13 points. The Eagles shot at 36.7 percent and were 58.3 percent from the free throw line.

“Our goal against a team like this is to put ourselves in a position to compete and have a fighting chance for a win,” said Head Coach Janet Raymer.

Savannah Weidauer, junior of Pleasant Grove, Utah, led the team in rebounds grabbing 9 for the night, three offensive and six defensive. Feddersen grabbed five rebounds, all on defense.

The Eagles had 18 turnovers on Friday night, which has been a trouble spot for them throughout the entire season. The ThunderWolves scored 18 points off of Eagle turnovers.

A tough match-up led to a final score in favor of the Eagles. The Eagles outscored the Cowgirls in the second and third quarters, but were outscored in the first and fourth quarter.

Freshman Jessica Harvey of Morrill, led the team with 15 points on Saturday. Leticia Rodriguez, senior of Chaparral, New Mexico, followed close behind with 14 points. The Eagles shot at a 35.8 percent for the night. They were 78.6 percent from the free throw line, a team best for the weekend.

Harvey led the team in rebounds as well, grabbing eight, all on defense.

Senior Kendra Baucom of Colorado Springs, Colorado, grabbed seven rebounds, three on offense and four on defense. The Eagles had nine total offensive rebounds and 31 defensive rebounds.

The Eagles turned the ball over 10 times Saturday night and the ThunderWolves only scored five points off of turnovers. This showed great improvement for the Eagles from Friday night.

The Eagles are on the road again this weekend. They will travel to Lakewood, Colorado, to take on Colorado Christian University Friday night. The Eagles will then travel to Golden, Colorado, to take on the Colorado School of Mines Saturday. The next home game for the Eagles is Feb. 9, when they take on Metropolitan State University of Denver.

Eagles struggle during weekend match-ups Bri’Yanna Lyon Reporter

The men’s basketball team played two away games this weekend. On Friday, the men traveled to Colorado State University-Pueblo, in Pueblo, Colorado. The men were defeated by a score of 92-49.

The ThunderWolves made 14 out of 16 free throws throughout the game, while the Eagles made 11 out of 14. Although the game was close at the end of the first half, the ThunderWolves launched ahead of the Eagles in the second half, where they scored 47 points.

Jordan Mills, sophomore of Alliance, was the only Eagle who scored in the double digits. He finished the game with 12 points.

Michael Johnson, sophomore of Nassau, Bahamas, who returned from an illness, and

Jeremy Ruffin, junior of Chicago, both had 8 points.

On Saturday, the men traveled to Las Vegas, New Mexico, to play New Mexico Highlands University.

Although the game was close, the Cowboys defeated the Eagles 69-67.

The Eagles shot their best game of the season and the Cowboys shot their third lowest percentage of the season.

Mills led the Eagles for the third time in a row. He hit 7 out of 10 shots and finished the game with 16 points. Dru Kuxhausen, freshman of Scottsbluff, had 13 points. Ruffin had his sixth double-double of the season with 10 boards and 12 points.

The Eagles will play their last two away games against Colorado School of Mines and Colorado Christian University this upcoming weekend.

Eagles track and field gains experience CSC sent nine athletes to compete at Colorado School of Mines last weekend Aaron Duin Reporter A select few members of the Chadron State track and field team made their way to Golden, Colorado this past weekend to compete at Colorado School of Mines. The Eagles faced stiff competition from the RMAC’s best.

“This meet provided our athletes with a good preview of what the conference championship will be like,” Distance Coach Brian Medigovich said. “Our team was able to get some valuable experience.”

Eight of the nine athletes who made the trip participat-

ed in the 4000-meter Distance Medley Relay, Friday. The men’s DMR placed fifth with a time of 10:57.42, worth 5 points. The women’s relay placed sixth recording a time of 13:11.55, scoring 3 points.

The Eagles were also able to score in individual events.

On the men’s side Cory Salitrik, junior of Rock Springs, Wyoming, contributed 7 points to the team score. He placed fifth in the 400-meter dash and sixth in the 200-meter dash. Levi Avila, junior of Mitchell won his heat in both the mile and 3000-meter run. Avila’s time of 4:37.05 in the mile was worthy of a seventh-place finish.

The Eagle women also received a boost in scoring from the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash. Cassidy Johnson,

senior of Rock Springs, Wyoming, placed seventh in both races. Her performances garnered 4 team points for the Eagles. Alyse Henry, sophomore of Rock Springs, Wyoming, also scored 4 points. Henry finished sixth in the 3000-meter run and eighth in the mile run.

The men’s and women’s teams finished the meet in ninth and 10th place respectively. The Eagles will return to the Steinhauer Field House in Golden, Colorado, Feb. 23, to compete for an RMAC title. With the conference championships less than a month away, the team is gearing up for the end of the indoor season. The track and field team will be back in action this weekend in Boulder, Colorado at the CU Open.

“Black Mirror” provides modern spin on “The Twilight Zone” Sarah Townsend Contributor Imagine a world where technology has completely taken over. Robots do basically everything for us, we all have implants in our eyes that we can use to play virtual reality games or use the Internet and have machines that can read through our memories to solve crimes.

The Netflix Original series, “Black Mirror”, delves into what our lives would be like in these types of situations.

The anthology series, created and written by Charlie Booker, examines our society, and episodes are typically set in the future or in an alternate reality version of the present.

Booker’s own paranoia of the potential effects of tech overload comes through in full force when the dark side of human ingenuity is exposed in these stories.

Along with a history of past accolades, Booker won a Primetime Emmy Award for his writing on the “Black Mir-

ror” episode, “San Junipero” in 2017.

To say it is binge-worthy is a massive understatement.

With a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 96 percent and a score of 8.9/10 on IMDb, “Black Mirror” is a home run. The British-based series has some seriously dark, satirical themes and with each episode produced as a stand-alone, this is a great series for those who have a whole weekend to watch or just a couple of hours.

The series draws on themes of human dependency on technology, and can be seen as a warning of what the world could be like. With inspiration from the American series, “The Twilight Zone,” the series is controversial to say the least.

The only problem with the show is that the lead-off episode, “The National Anthem,” is nauseating and not for the faint of heart. It is worthy of skipping and the rest of the series is much more watchable, dealing with less cringe-worthy topics.

The series is also well-cast with recognizable names like

Jon Hamm, who stars in “Mad Men,” “The Town” and “Million Dollar Arm,” and Daniel Kaluuya, best known for the male lead in “Get Out.” “Game of Thrones” actor, Jerome Flynn, also makes an appearance. Additionally, there are some talented up-and-coming stars that help propel the plots of the episodes.

With four seasons out now, there is enough “Black Mirror” to take the viewer on the dystopian ride of a lifetime.

While dark and gloomy sometimes, “Black Mirror” is full of thought-provoking ideas and makes the watcher more aware of their own dependency on technology.

Most episodes rely on creating a storyline, followed by a unique twist that the viewer is not expecting. This might be why the show keeps drawing viewers in and keeping their attention.

By building anxiety and creating a connection with those who watch, “Black Mirror” has created an almost cult-like following and is an absolute must-see if the viewer has a taste for the bizarre, yet possible, outcomes of humanity.

“Algedonic” is a journey through heartbreak Lydia Privett Opinion Editor On Dec. 17, 2017, r. h. Sin released his collection of poetry, “Algedonic.” When the news came to me just a month before, there was no hesitation to pre-order it on Amazon. Sin is an author that speaks to young people who are still learning their worth and what they deserve in life.

In this book, he takes the journey with the reader through heartbreak.

The first half of the book is called “Pain | Chaos.” It contains short poems on black paper. This section is dedicated to the reality of what heartbreak can do to

someone’s self-esteem. One of my favorites from this section of the book is, “who were you before the aches / of a broken heart / who were you / before the world decided / to tear you apart.”

The second half of the book is called “Pleasure | Peace.” This part of the book focuses on healing and a renewed feeling of value and self-worth. These poems, on the other hand, are written on white paper. I think the choice of paper color was genius and worked well with the mood of the poems.

One of my favorite poems from this section, is the very final one. It says “she found life in the night / like a rose blooming / without the sun.” This book is not only empowering for women, but it takes into account the emotions and events we overcome to become strong

women we are today and continue to grow.

The majority of Sin’s poems are quite short, ranging from 3-6 lines typically. This makes them an easy and quick read for busy college students, such as myself.

The book, a short 121 pages, makes for the perfect quick read before bed. Since it doesn’t tell a story, it makes it perfect for just a few pages to read a night and to not get lost in all of the story.

This book is perfect for the young, busy, college student going through heartbreak and learning her selfworth.

The quote on the back of the cover sums up what this book is about perfectly, “joy sits behind the curtain of pain.” I think everyone needs to be reminded of that every once in a while.
