The 28th annual Excellence in Early Childhood Conference will be hosted at CSC on Friday, Feb. 17 and Saturday, Feb. 18. The title of this year’s conference is “United We Stand for Children...One and All.” Friday will feature four sessions and Saturday will showcase internationally renowned presenter and author Daniel J. Hodgins.

CSC’s wrestling team won a dual against Western State Colorado University 18-17. This was the first time CSC beat Western State in 10 years.

Director of College Relations Alex Helmbrecht sent campus-wide emails and text messages notifying students and employees that classes would not meet Tuesday and Wednesday, but the residence halls and dining services would remain open. The Tuesday email also stated that campus was rescheduled to open 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. The Wednesday email did not state when campus would re-open.

At 9 a.m. Wednesday, Helmbrecht sent another email stating that CSC’s standard text message did not reach everyone, but he reminded students and employees that the primary form of communication from the college is email.

Helmbrecht’s email stated, “I apologize for this inconvenience and I assure you the issue will be resolved as soon as possible.”

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Wednesday, total snowfall in Chadron was one foot. The high today is near 27 degrees Fahrenheit and a low around 13 degrees Fahrenheit tonight with wind gusts up to 15 mph.

CAB, Senate discuss spring budget at open forum CAB executive board members explain details of their requested spring budget, adjust total Melanie Nelson News Editor CAB and Student Senate members discussed CAB’s spring budget request and Spring Daze events at the open forum Thursday in the Senate office.

CAB Vice Chair of Programming Trista Schell said CAB was requesting $16,050 for four Free Movie Nights, seven small events, two large events,

and a contingency fund.

Senate President Katrina Hurley asked how much money CAB used out of last semester’s budget.

CAB Vice Chair of Finance Gavan Archibald said there was $4,173 left over, because they canceled some events last semester that would have clashed with RLA events.

The CAB board was not aware that they retained the unspent money from last semester, so they will be deduct-

ing that from their proposed budget request. Hurley said Senate will vote to approve the adjusted request at its meeting Monday night.

Archibald asked Hurley about what weekend events Senate had planned to keep CSC from being a “suitcase campus,” and whether they would be willing to collaborate with CAB to sponsor larger events on weekends. Hurley said Senate has been urging clubs to plan events on the weekends, and would gladly work with CAB on larger weekend events.

Archibald also mentioned that the Friday of Spring Daze weekend, April 2123, seemed to be overloaded with events.

“They wanted to do Spring Daze as kind of like a deterrence from other events that may happen during The Big Event,” Hurley said. “But we kind of pushed it so Spring Daze would be the day before The Big Event.”

The carnival and club booths are on Friday so everyone, including resident advisers, can attend and because it was suggested people might be too tired from The Big Event to participate in the carnival on Saturday. Hurley said there will be a pool party Saturday as a “relaxing thing” before the concert that night. Sunday afternoon Senate is also trying to plan a small event before Free Movie Night.

Senate allocates CAB budget, swears in senators Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor Senate allocated $12,558 and swore in five senators at Monday’s meeting.

Senate allocated $11,808 to CAB for its spring semester budget. CAB returned with an updated proposed budget from last week.

At the Monday, Jan. 16 meeting, CAB asked for $16,050 for the semester, but after discussion at the open forum, it was found that CAB has $4,242 remaining from last semester budget. So the updated amount requested and approved was $11,808.

Senate also allocated $400 for international students to

decorate the Student Center to celebrate their Christmas. The allocation was for 10 packets of lanterns, $108.90; Chinese poetry to hang on doors, $54.45; envelops, $15.98; paper cutouts for windows, $34.02; coins, $36.67; fake firecrackers, $56.43; and shipping.

Senate allocated $350 for Senate training from 1-5 p.m. Saturday and for a bonding dinner at Wild’s following the training.

Five senators were approved and sworn in: Cameron Lehr, Kent Hall senators; Makenzy Petty, senator of B.E.A.M.S.S.; Maikayla Weiss, senator of B.E.A.M.S.S.; Lelisse Umeta, at large senator; and Madelynn Knight, senator of E.H.P.C.S.W. There is one at large position, three liberal arts posi-

tions, one B.E.A.M.S.S. position, and an Eagle Ridge position open on Senate.

Chief Justice Samantha Merrill said the court is still searching for a solicitor general. The person is not required to be involved in student government and this person will help navigate through the court procedures.

Coy Clark, student trustee, said that the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees approved a partial allocation for the CSC track project; approved the tuition waiver which will now cover 18 credit hours a semester instead of the 16 from before; and approved to keep the contract with the current bookstore.

Student trustee applications are due noon Feb. 6.

President Katrina Hurley said that Wayne State College is spending $12,000 on three charging centers for cell phones on WSC’s campus. Hurley presented the idea to see if senators would be interested in providing the charging centers on CSC’s campus. The centers will have phone cords for all the major types of phones and there will be lock boxes available for students to lock their phone in while it charges.

Hurley said Spring Daze will be April 21-23. She said the Spring Daze committee will bring a budget to Senate next Monday.

Friday, April 21 will be the clubs and businesses booths on campus. Saturday, April 22 will be The Big Event in the morning, a pool party in the afternoon,

and a country concert in the evening. The performer for the concert will be announced at a later date. Sunday, April 23 will be Free Movie Night.

Vice President of Finance Lukas Klueber reported $58,206.33 in unallocated funds.

Clark was appointed as the bylaw revision committee chair.

A student said that the pops in Andrew Hall’s vending machines are expired and the pops are in the wrong places.

The parking lot at Eagle Ridge is a mud patch, Sen. Carly Slaght said. It was suggested to take this issue to the parking committee, but senators said that the parking committee cannot do anything about that issue, so Hurley said she will take it to administration.

Take a note from former pres. actions Friday, the 45th president of the United States was inaugurated. Donald Trump officially became the ruler of the free country. Despite critiques and protests, Trump still took the oath and was sworn into office.

Thursday Jan. 19, Barack Obama was in control of the government, as he had been for the last eight years, but as of Friday, he had no power.

And Obama gave up that power peacefully and freely.

The 1790s in America are credited with establishing modern political parties as we know them today, despite the first president George Washington’s warning to avoid the party system.

During that time there were the Republicans and the Federalists who were on opposite sides of the spectrum on most issues, and each thought the other party was a threat to the country much like today’s Republicans and Democrats.

Despite the tensions between parties, Federalist John Adams still peacefully turned over power to Republican Thomas Jefferson. This exchange of power is credited as the first time political parties peacefully accepted a loss to another party. And this peaceful exchange is now a hallmark of American democracy.

Since that first exchange, power

has shifted back and forth between political parties a series of times, all which happened peacefully.

The First Amendment of the Constitution states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; of abridging the freedom of speech, or the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

This amendment grants the citizens of the United States of America the right to peacefully protest. It gives us the right to speak critically of the government. We have the right to not agree with the government, and to tell people that we don’t agree with it.

There is a difference, however, in standing your ground and destroying property. Setting fire to vehicles and breaking windows does nothing for your cause, and is hardly the way to gain respect for your opinion. By all means, have a voice and stand up for your beliefs, but rioting will only bring harm to yourself and others.

The outgoing president also has the right to speak out against the incoming president, and he has the right to protest the exchange of power.

But, each time, the outgoing president peacefully surrenders power. He accepts that the people have elected a

new president and he hands over power. He trusts the incoming president to not destroy America, even though the two do not always see eye-to-eye.

We, as American citizens, do have the right to protest what the president does and believes, but Americans did vote to elect each president.

So, despite your opinions on Donald Trump as president and despite who you voted for in the most recent election we should take a note from our outgoing president Obama, and all the former presidents, and allow Trump to take control of our government. Trust that Trump is not planning to ruin the country we love, and trust him to make the right decisions for our country, just like all of the past presidents.

Follow his presidency closely, not for the chance to ridicule Trump about the next candid photo that gets published, but to be involved with what is happening in our country. Practice your First Amendment rights and speak up when you have an idea or a complaint. But give our president a chance to lead.

We all work better with collaboration and constructive criticism when it is given to help build us up, not tear us down. We are one nation, under God, and should join together to keep America great.

Managing Editor Man, the struggle is real…

Mother nature, and CSC President Randy Rhine, blessed us with two snow days, which were great, but with the snow days, there is a struggle.

There’s a struggle to decide whether to stay in bed all day and just watch Netflix, or to actually accomplish some tasks.

Snow days as kids in elementary school and even high school were days to stay at home, watch TV, sleep in, and maybe go sledding. But we didn’t have a lot of responsibilities when we were in

elementary and high school.

Now we are in college and we have responsibilities, so the struggle is that we have to actually work and be responsible adults and being an adult is not always fun.

Snow days are for sure a struggle. Tuesday was my birthday, and I wanted nothing more than to stay in bed watching Netflix while eating cake. But I am the managing editor of The Eagle, so I had to struggle through the mountains of snow to get to the newsroom Tuesday and Wednesday to complete the paper. And the hardest struggle was simply leaving my bed.

Man, the struggle is definitely real, but again, so is chocolate, so life must still be sweet.

Friday, marked a day in history in which President Trump was officially inaugurated into office. Shortly thereafter all over the country there were protests, marches, and other demonstrations against this.

I want to lead this article by stating my intention is to be impartial; this isn’t about Trump, Hillary, or otherwise. Instead I want to direct attention to the media, specifically.

I find it to be reckless, dangerous even, to group together protestors and rioters. Thousands peacefully

Open your minds, don’t be scared to hear opposing opinions marched, without any incidents of violence; however, the mass media tends to focus its attention on the rioters, and makes bold claims that group the two together.

For example, Richard Spencer, a neo-Nazi, was attacked on camera by a rioter, but numerous news outlets have labeled this attacker as a protestor.

These subtle language differences highly influence what it is we, as the consumers, think of protestors. To make matters worse, some encourage these acts of violence, claiming that to hurt someone who promotes hate speech is vindicated.

This sort of thinking is short-sighted. It may feel satisfactory to strike out

I am pleased to announce that at the last Board of Trustees meeting, the Board amended policy 3400, tuition remissions. Beginning in the Fall 2017 term, students who receive the Board of Trustees Scholarship, Governor’s Opportunity Award, TeamMates Program Award, and Cooperative School Scholarship, will have 18 waivable hours each semester, instead of 16.

The Student Senates of Wayne, Chadron, and Peru proposed a change to the policy that would eliminate the term requirements, students would have the same amount of waivable hours, but they would be able to be taken at any time over four years. The original proposal went to the Council of Presidents, who researched the proposal, and forwarded the

The Senator’s reception was after the Board meeting. The state colleges’ respective foundation offices host a reception for trustees, state senators and other officials to attend to discuss the state of the system and on-goings. The attendance was down this year, but was still a success.

Other items on the agenda were a partial allocation for an outdoor track for CSC as well as re-contracting with the bookstore. Both measures passed. The track allocation funds, come from a yearly allocation from the legislature. This year, the allocation will go toward CSC’s track project, conditional that the rest of the funds become available from some other source.

Applications are now available for student trustee for the 2017-2018 year. Applications are due to Jon Hansen, vice president of enrollment management, marketing, and student affairs, no later than noon. Feb. 6. A committee will select three applicants to be forwarded to Governor Pete Rickets to choose one for appointments. For the past week all I’ve seen on Facebook are people trying to shut down these protests out of fear of them becoming violent; PROTESTS are not violent, riots are. And riots have no business anywhere in our mature, progressive society.

We should be proud of the men and women that stepped forward to voice their concerns and beliefs, because they are practicing their right to do so.

When I see such a collective mass of people all operating together, I don’t see people “throwing a tantrum” or endangering the public, I see people united in hope striving to make their own voices heard.

Willy Cogdill, redshirt freshman of Chadron, 184-pounds, and Matthew Kindler, freshman of David City, 197-pounds, lost their respective matches by decisions, allowing the Mountaineers to regain the lead 17-15.

But, Cooper Cogdill, redshirt sophomore of Chadron, heavyweight, earned the last three points for the Eagles when he won 3-0.

The Eagles are now 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the RMAC and are ranked No. 6 in the Super Region IV. The team travels to Las Vegas, New Mexico, for a dual against New Mexico Highlands University today and to Alamosa, Colorado, for a dual against Adams State University Friday.

“Travel has its pros and cons for sure,” Head Coach Brett Hunter said. “We like that we know exactly what the guys are eating and how much sleep they are getting when we travel, but also understand sitting on a bus for 10 plus hours one way takes a toll on our bodies.”

NMHU is ranked No. 15 in the region and ASU is No. 12, while CSC sits at the No. 6 position.

“We have to be careful about falling into a trap with these next two duals,” Hunter said.

“On paper we should win both, but we cannot overlook either team.”

The Chadron State women’s track and field team is ranked No. 5 in the USTFCCCA D-II women’s team rankings, highest in program history.

Senior Mel Herl, of Eaton, Colorado, and Stachia Reuwsaat, senior of Black Hawk, South Dakota, are two of the team’s biggest contributors this season, leading D-II in the weight throw and long jump, respectively.

Herl and Reuwsaat competed at the Air Force Academy Invitational meet Saturday. Reuwsaat took first in the women’s 60-meter dash with a time of 7.5 seconds. Reuwsaat was the NCAA D-II National Long Jump champion and the NCAA D-II National Long Jump runner-up, but she did not compete in the long jump Saturday.

Eric Yager, junior of Hot Springs, South Dakota, took fourth place in the 3,000m run in 9:04.05 followed by Levi Avila, junior of Mitchell, in sixth place at 9:24.23. Feddersen racks up 46 points in 2 weekend games Jay Feltson Opinion Editor Needing a win to get their season back on track the women’s basketball team traveled to Colorado to play Adams State University, Alamosa, and Fort Lewis College, Durango. The Eagles beat ASU 78-66, but lost to the Skyhawks 92-80.

The Eagles started the weekend playing the Grizzlies of Adams State. A slow CSC start in the first quarter allowed the Grizzlies to get off to a 24-17 lead going into the second quarter. The Eagles exploded in the second quarter offensively scoring 25 points, while only giving up 12 on the defensive end of the floor.

Junior guard Kalli Feddersen, of Rawlings, Wyoming, provided the largest offense spark for the Eagles. Feddersen dropped 19 points which led all players. Two Eagles also recorded good nights from the field, Erin Graham,

senior point guard of Deland, Florida, managed to score 17 points while dishing out four assists in 39 minutes. Leticia Rodriguez, junior of Chaparral, New Mexico, also scored 17 points in her 29 minutes of play to help the Eagles take a 12-point victory in Alamosa, 78-66.

“We had an overall great team effort from the team on both sides of the ball, we executed at the right times and got what we needed,” Feddersen said. “Defensively we worked hard all night to limit their scoring.”

Riding the momentum of a hard-fought victory the Eagles drove into Durango looking to repeat their performance from the previous night. The Eagles started taking an early 21-18 lead at the end of the first quarter. That lead would be short lived as the Skyhawks dominated the second quarter giving the Eagles 18 points while scoring 26 points of their own to take a slim lead going into halftime.

to win the game, 92-80. Feddersen continued to show her offensive dominance by scoring 27 points shooting 11-14 from the field and 2-6 from the 3-point line. Kylah Collins, redshirt freshman forward of Waukegan, Illinois, added 19 points, shooting 9-14 from the field and 1-1 from the free-throw line.

Defensively the Eagles couldn’t stop the Skyhawks from scoring, and were outscored in every quarter except the first. Fort Lewis also managed to score 50 points in the paint to help them cruise to an easy victory.

“Against Fort Lewis we put up a lot of points but our defense as a team needed to be stronger so we are spending a lot of time on it this week in practice,” Havannah Newens, senior guard of Mitchell, said.

“We feel that in order to get two wins this weekend we have to slow down other team’s offense, while continuing to score the way we have been, we really need to lock in on defense if we want a win.”

Men’s basketball team drops 2 in Colorado John Murphy Reporter The Chadron State College men’s basketball team lost both games this weekend, first to the Adams State Grizzlies, 80-65, Friday night, before suffering an 87-64 loss to the No. 21 ranked team in D-II, the Fort Lewis Skyhawks.

Friday night the Eagles opened with a 12-4 lead before Adams State started hitting shots to go on a 10-0 run to take the lead. The rest of the half was hard fought with the Grizzlies entering halftime with a four-point lead.

The second half was a different story.

Although the Eagles’ field goal percentage improved by five percent, the Grizzlies shot 47 percent from the field en route to

making seven 3-pointers. With the help of eight Chadron turnovers, the Grizzlies outscored the Eagles by 11 in the half to seal the 15-point victory.

“We played two good teams last weekend and didn’t shoot the ball or defend the way we needed to,” Matt Reader, junior of Appleton, Wisconsin, said.

On the night, Leigh Saffin, redshirt sophomore of Warrnambool, Australia, scored a season-high 18 points in 19 minutes, hitting five 3-pointers to lead the Eagles in scoring. Darius Polley, junior of Amarillo, Texas, accounted for 14 points while Jordan Perry, junior of Murrieta, California, recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Fort Lewis Skyhawks shot an unbelievable 63 percent from the field during the first half Saturday night, resulting in a 49-20 lead. With nine players scoring during the first half and only committing two turnovers, the Eagles struggled to get stops. Despite outscoring the Skyhawks 44-38 in the second half and shooting 56 percent compared to Fort Lewis’ 36, the Eagles still suffered a 23-point loss.

Despite seven turnovers, Polley exploded for a season and game-high 26 points, being the Eagles only double digit scorer.

The Chadron State basketball teams return home this weekend with games against Colorado State University-Pueblo, Pueblo, Friday night, while hosting the New Mexico Highlands University Cowboys of Las Vegas, Saturday night.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., following the women’s games.

“It’ll be nice to have some home games in front of our awesome crowd the next few weeks,” Reader said. “Hopefully we can bounce back and defend out home court and get some wins this weekend.”

2017 Netflix series represents better than 2004 movie “A Series of Unfortunate Events” has covered multiple mediums Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor Before there was the friendly, warm, snowman Olaf in “Frozen,” there was the cold, disgusting, Count Olaf in “A Series of Unfortunate Events.”

The first time the world heard about Count Olaf was in the Lemony Snicket’s children’s books. Lemony Snicket is the pen name of Daniel Handler. The first book in the series was published in 1999. There were 13 books in the series.

The first time we saw Count Olaf was in 2004 when Jim Carrey played the creepy man in a movie directed by Brad Silberling. That movie was a let down for those who loved the book series, and there were rumors for years about a remark, or TV series, or simply something better.

That dream finally came true this month when we finally met an ideal Count Olaf in “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” as a Netflix series. Neil Patrick Harris plays Olaf in this series.

On Jan. 13, Netflix released the first eight episodes of the show, and there are two episodes per book, so the first season goes through the first four books. Each episode is 30 minutes long.

As a fifth and sixth grader, I read the “Unfortunate Events,” and I remember having to wait for our public library to get the 13th and final book to finish. I remember having my name on a wait list and growing more and more impatient with everyone else reading it, so much so that I eventually bought my own copy to read.

“A Series of Unfortunate Events” have been my favorite series since, and along with many others, I, was extremely disappointed in the representation of the books in movie form, and I was so pumped about the Netflix series that I watched all eight in a day.

Along with Harris as Olaf, the entire cast of the series fit a better representation of the book’s descriptions of the Baudelaire children.

Malina Weissman plays Violet, Louis Hynes plays Klaus, and Presley Smith plays Sunny.

In addition, we see Lemony Snicket, played

by Patrick Warburton, pop up occasionally through the episodes to provide insights and guidance, just like in the book.

The books are sarcastic, educational, and entertaining. The narrator, Snicket, tells the reader to put the book down and walk away from the terribly sad story that he has to share.

The Netflix series does the same with the opening theme song.

but remains constant with the line, “Look away, look away, it will surely wreck your evening, your whole life and your day, every single episode is nothing but dismay so look away.”

The narrator interrupts to create suspense randomly throughout the story. During the interruptions, like in the books, Snicket takes time to define certain words or phrases that we should probably understand as college students, but we might not have known as fifth and sixth graders.

In the books there were various characters who we were not allowed to meet until we were deeper into the series and we were not allowed a look into their backgrounds, but the Netflix series takes the time to showcase multiple story lines while telling us the story of the Baudelaire children.

If you have not read the books, watched the movie, or watched the Netflix series, I do not want to ruin the story line and I do not want to give away the secrets of the story, but I can tell you the books and show, not so much the movie, are entertaining, sarcastic and humorous.

I recommend that everyone pick up the books, read the story, and then watch the Netflix series. They are a quick read and a quick watch and well worth the time.

Ignore the movie though, we should probably just all pretend that never happened.

Local students filed into the Math and Science Building Saturday for the third edition of Science Saturdays. The subject was “Do you hear what I hear?”

Students began the morning learning about how sound travels in waves, and modeling them with slinkys. By grabbing each end of the child’s toy and moving them in various directions, the different sound waves can easily be seen.

Next the students, with the help of several elementary and secondary education majors and professors, built models of ear drums to show how vibrations move through the ear. Using the models, students were able to see the effect of vibrations caused by sound on the ear drum.

After the ear drum experiment, the students split into two groups. The older group of students, fifth, sixth, and seventh graders, built guitars out of cigar boxes and materials found at a hardware store. After a lot of epoxy glue, and a few minutes of tuning, the guitars were ready to strum. Assistant physical and life sciences professor Jeremy Weremeichik said that the guitars could even be converted to play with an amp, as an electric guitar.

The younger group built xylophones out of copper pipes and popsicle sticks, and maracas out of coconut shells and beads.

There are four more Science Saturdays scheduled this semester. The next on Feb. 11, is called ‘Electricity: Circuits 101.’

An easy way to break the winter blues is road tripping farther south to warmer weather. For a true road trip warrior, Corpus Christi, Texas, is the perfect quick-trip destination. Corpus Christi is a vibrant city with amazing coastal views of the Gulf of Mexico. Not only is the average February weather 72 degrees Fahrenheit, but it can also be a cheap road trip. Here’s how to plan a trip to Corpus Christi for around $75.

Travel companions This road trip experience would not be complete without some friends to travel with. Traveling with others reduces expenses and produces memorable experiences. An easy way to reduce expenses is to prepare some meals or sandwiches before you leave. Cutting out the need to spend excess money on food can reduce your cost of the trip by $50.

Where to stay

Renting a hotel room can be pricey but camping at Mustang Island is a huge money saver. To primitive camp on the beach is only $10 a day on Mustang Island. For those who are electric dependent, campsites with water and electric are only $20 a day. Primitive camping for three nights with four people will only cost $7.50 per person. Compared to a $60 a night hotel room for the same amount of time the savings per person is more than $35.

Driving

Spending about 19 hours in a car can seem odious but chatting, rocking out to a killer playlist, and changing drivers, helps to break up the long drive. Corpus Christi is less than 2,500 miles round trip from Chadron. If the group has four members and the vehicle taken gets 30 miles per gallon the average price of gas per person is less than $50.

Staying entertained on a budget is easy in Corpus Christi with the numerous free events. Guided nature walks at Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve and Learning Center, La Mano food truck Fridays, and live music are all budget friendly activities. Visiting the USS. oming, Laramie, to earn a master’s degree in art. It was then he began to explore perspective art. Termes was offered a full scholarship to complete his M.A. at Otis Art Institution in Los Angeles.

At the completion of his academic career, Termes returned to Black Hills State, and began teaching as an associate professor in art.

Since then, Termes has quit his educational teaching career and begun to practice art fulltime, though he has presented seminars on art and math all over the world.

In 2014, Spearfish, South Dakota, named Sept. 9 “Dick Termes’ Day.” In Memorial Hall Room 239, Rebecca Nolda’s mixed media art show, “Cypher, De-Cypher,” is on display. In the artist statement on display with her work, Nolda says she likes to “think about the differences between what we imagine and what we see as reality.”

A combination of work on canvas and metal, her work is both vague and perplexing. The metal gives off a sort of industrial feel that hints at the changes going on in the world today.

Roughly 10 to 15 pieces are displayed in the gallery, all ranging in medium, canvas and size.

Interesting parts of her work include pieces of metal bolted to a metal canvas and the appearance of paper glued to metal.

One of the most interesting art pieces is a series. All the titles include “Diary” and they are

labeled one through six. The pieces are mixed medium on aluminum cradled panel and include what looks like ink stamped directly onto the metal. The words have a somewhat poetic ring to them, which gives the feel of combining more than one literary art.

Several of her pieces include writing ranging from actual words, as in the piece above, to mathematical equations to what appears to be dates.

The numbers are a common theme in all pieces. Half of the artworks share their industrial theme, using aluminum or other kinds of metal as the canvas, and others use gallery canvas. Several of the paintings done on gallery canvas have thick layers of paint, and while they appear to be relatively simple and have open space, they also contain the interesting symbols which, according to Nolda, are all open for their own interpretation.

Nolda has a master’s degree in studio art from the University of Minnesota, and she has lived in New Mexico for over 25 years. She says it is a continuing source of inspiration. She also says she enjoys the opportunity to work with other artists in a learning situation to grow her understanding of art.

These shows will be on display until Feb. 10 in Memorial Hall Main Gallery and Room 239.

The gallery hours are 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday or by appointment.

‘Rogue One’ saves ‘Star Wars’ series “Force Awakens” left audience disappointed but “Rogue One” saves Brianna Wilson Reporter After the release of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” many “Star Wars” fans were a bit disappointed with the outcome. “Rogue One” seems to have saved the series.

A good view for classic “Star Wars” fans, “Rogue One” also draws in those that aren’t as caught up in the series. While the movie takes place in a tight window on the overall “Star Wars” timeline, it also fills in a crucial gap.

The movie introduces several new characters to the series and while the ending is a bit disappointing, it is also in many ways expected.

Classic characters make an appearance as well, among them are Darth Vader, Princess Leia and Governor Tarkin. While Darth Vader can be played by pretty much anyone, since it’s his voice that counts, Princess Leia as she was in the original movies and Governor Tarkin were somewhat surprise appearances.

To get these influential characters into the movie, computer-generated images (CGI) had to be used, considering the actor who played the original Governor Tarkin died in 1994. This could have been a tricky task, throwing well known CGI characters into the mix of live actors.

But Disney managed to pull it off. While the CGI was noticeable if one actually looked for it, it didn’t particularly stand out.

And for developing the characters of the actual movie? Disney did a pretty good job.

I’ll admit, when I first saw the previews for “Rogue One,” I seriously had my doubts. It looked like it wasn’t going to fit into the timeline at all and that Disney was going to do its

own thing with the series and that got me a bit worked up.

But it simply wasn’t so.

The main characters played a crucial part in the timeline and were well developed in the classical “Star Wars” way, which was a huge relief.

Many people, myself and my father included, worried that Disney’s purchase of the rights to “Star Wars” would completely ruin the series. And after “The Force Awakens,” it seemed we may have been right.

It was refreshing to be proven wrong.

The movie didn’t start out with the classic theme song and a back story explanation that so many people are familiar with, which was admittedly a bit disappointing. But the rest of the movie made up for it, and, truthfully, that is only a small part of the movie anyway— though it is nice to have that sort of preparation to the rest of the story.

There were, as with all movies, some places where it falls short. Such as the way the coun-

cil was set up: There were several humans within the crowd and it’s a bit disappointing because more than just the human race was being suppressed by the Empire.

They changed a few of the classic characters from the council, and if Governor Tarkin and Princess Leia were CGI, why could the head of the council not also be CGI, for originality purposes?

There was also a definite difference between the person they used to play Darth Vader and the original, though this is a minor difference, it was still, sadly, noticeable.

I have always been a Disney fan. So, in the end, I was glad to see they hadn’t completely butchered the “Star Wars” series.

And it gives me hope that in the future movies, they will continue to do as well as they have here.

Overall, I would rate this movie four out of five stars, maybe even four and a half. It is definitely a movie worth owning when it comes out on DVD in the next several months.
