“My favorite part is actually problem solving,” Norgard sa id.

Currently, the costu me department is working on putting together costumes for the Theatre Depa rtment’s upcoming production of “A lmost, Maine.”

Students’ ‘Confessions’ might require penance T.J. Thomson Executive Editor

Well, no need for a priest; there’s Facebook.

Those with a juicy tidbit or embarrassing transgression to share can now “anonymously” confess to an online audience of more than one billion via a recently launched Facebook page, CSC Confessions.

Until Tuesday afternoon, CSC Confessions featured the college’s logo as its profile picture. Chadron State officials contacted Facebook and requested that the registered trademark be removed, Information Technology Director and Chief Information Officer Ann Burk said Wednesday. Facebook removed the logo Tuesday and a CSC Confessions page administrator then changed the profile picture to an image of the High Rise Residence Hall at about 6 p.m. Tuesday.

As of Wednesday evening, the page boasts about 560 confessions and has garnered more than 1,350 likes since its March 9 launch.

A Sunday post stated a female CSC faculty member was “a total FOX!” The poster continued “I’d take her out any day of the month. Screw the teacher-student relationship, I’d hit it. HARD.” A Tuesday post stated “I smoked weed numerous times in the dorms… and I was never caught!” Another Tuesday confession stated “My first football camp I banged a trainer the first night that we moved into our own dorms.”

Posts made on the page may have violated a number of the college’s standards, including its code of conduct and acceptable use policies. The former bans sexual harassment, while the latter prevents users of CSC resources from digitally post-

ing “profane, vulgar or other harassing language within e-mail messages, programs, and/or files.”

“Relative to harassment, I think that should be called out,” Burk said. “That site isn’t anything that Chadron State has any control over. We haven’t made any determination as to the applicability of the [acceptable use] policy.”

Burk added “If CSC resources are being used, it would violate the [acceptable use] policy.”

Early Wednesday morning, a CSC Confessions administrator published a post announcing a change in policy. The user stated that the page would no longer publish posts with the names of CSC faculty members. By 10 a.m. Wednesday, several posts that referenced faculty member’s names had been removed.

Users submit content to the page by filling out a one-question form on online website SurveyMonkey. Page administrators then copy and paste the submissions into Facebook pages, ensuring relative submission anonymity.

Burk said CSC’s IT Department could not track IP addresses of users who submit information via SurveyMonkey or Facebook.

“It is anonymous,” she said.

In a Wednesday email, a technical escalations employee with SurveyMonkey stated that a survey’s creators could view the IP address of any responses submitted, although survey creators might not be able to identify specific devices from a single IP address.

“You can view response [sic] by IP address, but keep in mind that IP address [sic] is pretty vague and many computers on the same network may share one IP address,” the employee stated.

In another email, a product support specialist with SurveyMonkey stated Wednesday that unless a survey creator

requests records be deleted, they would remain indefinitely as long as the user maintains an account.

“The information is retained for as long as the data is stored in the account--This all depends on whether you ever request to have the data deleted, otherwise it will be stored forever,” the employee stated.

Regardless of whether the posts violate any CSC policies, administrators are concerned with the impression the page makes.

“The content isn’t a good reflection of Chadron State,” Burk said. “I think individuals need to use good judgement.”

Burk said that CSC Interim Marketing Coordinator Tena Cook is making requests to Facebook to pull content down if it is in violation of policy.

Cook cancelled a 3 p.m. Wednesday interview with The Eagle about the CSC Confessions Page and instead issued a statement via email.

“As presented in the ‘About’ section of the page, ‘CSC Confessions page has no official affiliation with Chadron State College’. The site is not sanctioned or associated with Chadron State College. The site did not ask for and we did not grant permission to use the trademarked CSC logos,” Cook stated.

In a Wednesday morning phone interview, Christine Greenhow, assistant professor of educational psychology and educational technology at Michigan State University, said students’ comfort with anonymously posting details of their private lives stems from factors such as the development of routine and perception of environment.

“In research we’ve done with young people, students see Facebook as a more hospitable environment for their thoughts,” Greenhow said. “Because it’s a part of their routine; they’re more comfortable [online] than in more formal spaces.”

Prime priorities for sequestration cuts

Student interest needed before more language courses can be offered

midst the sea of drunken debauchery and depraved exploits posted to the “Chadron State College Confessions” facebook page, The Eagle Staff found a redeemable post, namely confession #423: “I wish that CSC had a sign language class... or just more language class options.”

The only foreign language course in the current CSC catalog is WLAN 100: Conversational Spanish, however, it has not been offered since the spring 2012 semester.

In the fall semester of 2011, The Eagle ran an article about the possibility of CSC offering the Rosetta Stone language learning software, but the faculty and student government are still struggling with how to tackle the foreign language question.

“We are currently investigating a program out of Denver, [Colo.], called BridgeEnglish,” Joel Hyer, Dean of BEAMSS said in a phone interview on Wednesday afternoon.

BridgeEnglish is a school for foreign students trying to perfect their English skills.

According to Hyer, the college is trying to broker a deal to have BridgeEnglish students to come to the CSC campus and teach a variety of conversational language classes.

If CSC can secure a deal with BridgeEnglish for instructors, the courses will most likely be offered under the current WLAN platform, but Hyer says that an improved student interest would accelerate the likelihood of adopting more foreign language options.

“It would be great if, for example, we had 4 students express interest in a conversational Arabic class,” Hyer said, “but if we had 40 students interested, we could see that as necessitating multiple sections.”

So if you are serious about wanting a foreign language option at CSC, rather than wishing, you should make it happen.

Islam is diverse inside and outside of Morocco Aaron Gonzalez

ome friends asked me what it is like to live in an “Islamic” country, and I had trouble responding.

To say “Islamic” is about as clear as “Christian.” In the Western world, we would clarify this by saying, for example, “Catholic,” “Anglican,” “Lutheran,” or “Eastern Orthodox” country.

I doubt that many Westerners know of the Shia/Sunni split, let alone the Sunni schools of Hanbali (Saudi Arabia), Maliki (North Africa), Hanafi (Central/South Asia, Caucasus), or Shafi’i (East Africa, Indonesia).

Though Islam falls into the Abrahamic monotheist tradition, Judeo-Christianity tends to think of it as something very foreign, while Islam views itself as the final corrective heir to these religions, and thus superior. As for Islam in Morocco, there exists a paradox. Their constitution says that everyone born in the country that isn’t Jewish or Christian is automatically a Muslim, and thus “Moroccan” and “Muslim” are almost synonymous.

In reality, many are only cultural Muslims. Many will say that they believe in God, the Qur’an, and Muhammad; but a large portion neither pray daily, nor adhere to the no-alcohol and no pre-marital sex injunctions. In addition, despite the prevalence of gays in this country, all the ones I’ve talked to tell me how much they adore the Prophet and love their religion.

Not everyone goes to the mosques either, despite the fact that every neighborhood has one, as well as the daily TV, radio, and minaret calls-to-prayer. Besides, there isn’t enough room in all the mosques to fit the entire population anyway.

Sometimes the paradox is obvious. Moroccan law explicitly states that alcohol is only to be sold to foreigners and nonMuslims, yet virtually every village and town has at least one bar. These bars are always packed to the brim with Moroccans of all demographics, from hip young youths to bearded pious men, drinking German beer or American Johnny Walker Blue. I don’t know about you, but I highly doubt that every night the majority of Moroccans convert to Judaism or Christianity, and the authorities know this, because plenty of policemen go to the bars too.

Despite some degree of liberalism, if someone comes out openly as being an atheist, converting to another faith, being gay, or breaking fast during Ramadan; the societal repercussions can be severe. This is the case of the openly-gay Moroccan

novelist Abdellah Taïa who fled to France in the 1990s, but his novels are still widely-sold and read in Morocco.

Another example is Kacem El Ghazzali, who came out as an atheist, ate during Ramadan, and questioning the legitimacy of the king, who is allegedly a descendent of the Prophet. El Ghazzali was accused of “shaking other people’s faith,” a law punishable by jail not only in Morocco, but many other Muslim countries. He now lives in Switzerland and recently spoke at the Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy. In both of these cases, Islam is exposed as a very weak faith that cannot take criticism, creating the need for state to protect it from dissidents, even if the dissidents are Muslims themselves.

Nevertheless, Morocco is one of the more liberal Muslim countries in the Arab world. As a result, it is often chastised by other countries, particularly in the Gulf, of not being pious enough. For example, a few years ago a Moroccan newspaper printed some jokes about aspects of Islam (usually poking fun at imams, rituals, and such).

Everyone had a good laugh, but a few weeks later legislators in Kuwait got wind of the jokes and announced to the Gulf states that Morocco was assaulting God’s religion. Such pressure forced the Moroccan state to close down the paper for a few months. This too is important for Westerners to understand; with the immense wealth and power of the Gulf states over the Arabian Peninsula holds much of the Islamic world, from Morocco to Indonesia, hostage.

Thanks to the intolerant and supremacist Wahhabist/Hanbali school of Islam that pervades there, Saudi Arabia determines who may or may not visit Mecca (the Sufis, Shia, and other sects are already banned from pilgrimage). To think that such a malignant country exists, with the support of America nonetheless, guarantees that liberalization and reform of Islam will be very difficult.

The effects of such power can be seen in mosques in the Western world, where a large number are built with Saudi funds and supplied with racist, homophobic, intolerant, and paranoid Wahhabist ideology, something seldom found in indigenous mosques in Lebanon, Morocco, Bangladesh, Turkey, and other non-Gulf countries.

Speaking as an atheist, a “Westerner,” and a humanist, I can say with certainty that one need only really fear the Islam of Wahhabism and similar schools of thought. There is a civil war of ideas and blood going on in the Islamic world, not only in Iraq and Afghanistan but also Mali, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Syria, and

Pakistan, to name a few. This fight should not be seen as solely something that affects “our” interests, but rather a human tragedy and a battle for Islamic civilization, a once glorious, progressive, and leading global force.

The first victims of this sectarian struggle, after all, are not Westerners but Muslims. The side that “wins” this struggle will not only determine the fate of Muslims, but also impact the rest of the world. Let’s hope for the sake of humanity that side of tolerance, secularism, and reform wins.

Irish Rose Cocktail One ounce of lemon juice One ounce of cherry juice Three ounces of soda water Directions: Pour the ingredients over ice and stir.

Garnish the drink with a maraschino cherry or a twist of lemon. You can use lemon-lime soda instead of soda water for a sweeter drink.

Chocolate Mint Shake

Directions: Pour the milk, chocolate syrup, and Creme De Menthe into a blender with the ice cream. Blend the drink to your desired consistency.

Garnish it with whipped cream.

Debus, McAfee end season as All-Americans Debus finishes fifth, McAfee takes eighth place at NCAA Nationals meet Barrett Browne Reporter

Two CSC wrestlers fought their way to the top of the bracket at the RMAC/Super Region 4 Championships to earn themselves a trip to the National Championships in Birmingham, Ala., last weekend.

Jordan Debus, junior of Mitchell, placed third in the RMAC/ Super Region 4 tournament, over the time span of two days. Perry McAfee, senior of Casper, Wyo., went 2-1 on the first day, but sealed his championship spot with a 4-2 decision.

Three other wrestlers were still in contention Saturday; Chris Leak, senior of Omaha, Bruce Zurek, senior of Sargent, and Mike Hill, sophomore of Fort Laramie, Wyo. All three wrestlers were unable to capture victories on Saturday and fell to sixth place. Chadron State placed fifth overall for the tournament with 59.5 points.

This National Championship trip to Birmingham was Debus’ third trip.

Debus placed fifth in the 184-pound weight class while McAfee finished eighth at 133 pounds.

Both wrestlers lost their first

match of the tournament, but bounced back with multiple victories. After losing his first match 15-8 on Friday, Debus recovered with three straight victories which sealed his All-American faith.

In his final match, Debus out grappled Mitch Schultz, junior of Upper Iowa University, in an 8-1 decision to seal his fifth place finish.

McAfee lost his first match to the No. 1 ranked wrestler at 133 pounds, then defeated a two-time National Champion in the weight class in his next match. McAfee would win his next match by a 7-3 decision against Cameron Throckmorton, a redshirt freshman of Shippensburg. In his final match, McAfee lost by a narrow 6-4 margin.

Both wrestlers finished the season with impressive records. Debus sits at 24-13 and McAfee ended his career at CSC with a 27-19 overall record. Both wrestlers also came out of the tournament with All-American honors.

As it was McAfee’s last season, he reflected on the season as a whole and found he was quite satisfied.

“This was the best season I ever had, I’m happy with how well it went,” McAfee said.

Eagles softball swings to winning season Molly Wedan Sports Editor Even with cold wind howling through the Black Hills, causing Saturday’s games to be canceled, the Eagles softball team was able to get a hot start on Friday in winning two games against Western New Mexico, 11 to one, and Black Hills State University, eight to three.

After one inning of warm up where either team went scoreless, Chadron took off and scored eight of their 11 total points in the second inning. Three athletes had the majority of the scoring when they each had two runs batted in. Danielle L’Argent, senior infielder of Clovis, Calif., started the action off with a homerun in the second inning, and then had both her RBI’s in the second inning as well. Shea Graham, freshman infielder of Colorado Springs, Colo., had both of her RBI’s in the second inning, and Caity Pelayo, freshman catcher of Parker, Colo., had an RBI in the fourth inning.

Junior pitcher of Denver, Colo., Aryn Grywusiewicz stymied the Mustangs to only one run in five innings and sent four back to the dugouts as well. According to Head Coach Robert Stack, the win

came as a result of all-around team effort.

“We have really been focusing on the idea that whatever success we are having, it is a result of us playing as a team,” Stack said.

Later that Friday, the Eagles started out slower against Black Hills, as the Yellowjackets led two to zero after five innings of play time.

However, Chadron responded with four runs in the final two innings to seal the win.

Graham and Pelayo were key hitters as they each had an RBI once again. Katie Londo, senior first basemen of Brady, and Graham each had a hit as well.

The star pitcher in this game was Kylee Polsley, junior of Omaha, who totaled only 11 hits in seven innings and struck out six Yellowjackets.

This weekend Chadron travels to Lakewood, Colo., to take on a double header against Colorado Christian University. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Friday, and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday.

“We stress that we need to be mentally in tune to the game and to finish whatever number of outs needed to be successful at the end of the game,” Stack said.

Norton was entered in the shot put after capturing the 18th best mark in Division II throughout the season, but scratched on all three attempts.

“Alyssa was disappointed but just to go to nationals was a highlight,” Baily said. Norton competed Friday in shot put, but did not advance due to being unable to record a mark.

Graham also competed Friday in the 60 meter run, completing it in 6.82 seconds, making him the third best. Unfortunately, he did not advance to the finals round as he finished ninth overall.

“Alex didn’t get the start he wanted,” Baily said.

The top eight advance to finals and are awarded All-American honors.

Kapukotuwa competed Thursday, beating his personal best record and breaking the school record with a throw of 60-feet, 3-inches in the 35-pound weight throwing. Kapukotuwa also finished ninth overall, keeping him from moving on to finals. “It was very exciting,” Baily said.

Each person took it easy in training before nationals.

“We don’t want to wear them out,” Baily said.

However, each practice kept them fast and quick. They wanted them to be fast and ready.

Baily also said that in Division II, there are 65 participants, which makes everything more difficult and more of a competition, but commented that it’s an exciting venue.

“We’re happy with the strength of our team.”

Outdoor track and field season is now starting up for the college athletes, but the first meet isn’t until March 30 and will be held in Spearfish, S.D. However, this weekend the Eagle track and field athletes will host the annual indoor track meet for high school athletes around the area.

Division I and II schools will be present at this meet. Competition is set for 9 a.m. in the NPAC.

Charlie Sampson, the first African American to win the Bull Riding World Championship, strolls across Memorial Hall’s main stage. As a part of the Black History Month, Sampson spoke on Feb. 21, and shared anecdotes about his journey from aimless urbanite to the bull riding champion. His first encounter with the wild west was a cub scouts trip.

Sampson fell in love with a pony-ride, and when he ran out of quarters, Sampson cleaned stables to earn rides. Growing up, he worked tirelessly for ranches, entered his first rodeo under a pseudonym, attended college on a rodeo scholarship (only to break his leg and be unable to ride as a freshman), and encountered racism while competing in the South.

Despite the pedigree of his story, Sampson’s talk was less a celebration of his successes and more a celebration of everyone who helped him. His frank humility brightened the auditorium, almost as much as his glowing smile, and these days, instead of finding role models, Sampson is stepping up to be one.

New host, new flavors: ‘Release’ makes its way into its seventh year Sara Labor Lifestyles Editor For the seventh year in a row, an excited crowd will gather in Memorial Hall’s auditorium this Saturday to see the spring concert, Release.

Former student Jovan Mays began Release in the auditorium of Chadron High School. Six years later, Release is still going strong, with not only local artists preparing to share their talent, but also artists traveling in from all across America. The buzz this year, however, is about Kay’Vion, a signed R&B artist, who is traveling in from New York.

Karl McFarlane, aka Karl Minor, this year’s Release coordinator, said that having Kay’Vion is an exciting step for Release. This is

the first year they will have a signed artist coming in, McFarlane said.

This year is also McFarlane’s first year coordinating Release.

Previously, the show was put together by Mays, then later by Marty Lastovica, who graduated last spring. Both Mays and Lastovica will be returning for this weekend’s performance.

Lastovica commented that he is looking forward to seeing McFarlane’s take on Release. Lastovica said that everyone has different ideas for the show. “I’m excited to see Karl put a different flavor on the show.”

“If it keeps going, I’ll do what I can to be there and support it,” said Lastovica, adding that it would be surreal to see the show make it to it’s ten year anniversary. “It’s good to see the support of the arts in Chadron.”
