Senate allocates $25k for The Pit’s new pool tables Ashley Swanson Managing Editor Senate approved by a majority vote $25,000 for five new pool tables to replace the current ones in The Pit area.

The Pit Manager Jennie Robbins and The Pit Adviser Chris Green said the current pool tables are falling apart and that some of them have lost pockets.

At least one of them is “pretty much beyond repair,” Robbins said.

Green said he called numerous places for the best price and said he found one in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Shipping, installation, removing the old tables, and purchasing the pool tables will be including in the $25,000.

Green and Robbins said the old tables might be moved to the residents halls, Kent Hall’s Red Room, or the Gold Room.

Green said The Pit could spend money to renovate each table, but they would have to do that each year, ultimately spending more money than the $25,000. The new pool ta-

bles will last 10-15 years, he said.

Senate President Dillon Spies suggested senators wait a week before making a decision, and talk to their constituents.

Student Trustee Jacob Rissler echoed his suggestion.

As Nov. 24 was the last Senate meeting for the semester, and Green wanted to put in an order during winter break, Rissler said he understood there was a time limit to making the decision, but still suggested senators wait on making the decision.

Half of the senators said many of

the students on-campus have already voiced their opinion on the pool tables, saying they were difficult to play on and were bad quality.

They also said since so many students use the pool tables, spending the $25,000 would benefit a majority of campus.

The greenery could not be gathered much sooner, otherwise the needles would dry out, Mays said.

The thick ends of the branches are held by wire, and for this Mays reminded volunteers to use “creative wiring” skills to guarantee the decorated swags would be tough enough to withstand the wind and extreme weather that can accompany a Chadron winter. Bows were then fastened to the top of the swags, and volunteers were encouraged to add their own décor if desired.

The swag-decorating event began four years ago, when the 10th Street main gates were built, according to Mays. Only two to three people decorated swags in the beginning, but the event grew significantly when it was opened to community volunteers.

Dewayne Gimeson, college relations public information specialist, volunteered for the third time Saturday.

“My motivation is to help the college, just to volunteer,” Gimeson said.

The swags will be displayed for over a week, until the needles are too dry to continue spreading Christmas cheer.

Reporter Chadron campus and community members volunteered a portion of their weekend to ensure Chadron’s Christmas would have “swag”.

Led by Lucinda Mays, administration and finance grounds supervisor, about 15 volunteers participated in the campus-sponsored swag decorating Nov. 22 in the Sandoz Center Chicoine Atrium.

The swags will be displayed at the main gates on 10th Street and in the Student Center. Volunteers were also invited to decorate swag for their homes.

“Students love to see the Student Center dressed up,” Mays said. “It’s nice to do little things this stressful time of year.”

Swag is a type of greenery used for holiday décor.

Colorado blue spruce supplied the 10th Street swag greenery and Black Hills spruce was used for Student Center swags.

Mays and other Mari Sandoz employees harvested the greenery for about a week prior to the event.

As Luton understood it, the tunnels are used for maintenance only, which was confirmed by many of Senate’s advisers.

This makes the tunnels unavailable for students to use as walkways.

Pat Beu, senior director of student affairs, said the progress with the Student Health 101 magazine is going well, and asked if a senator would like to give leadership advice for the magazine content.

If a senator is interested they were asked to contact Beu or CSC’s Nurse Ann Dockweiler.

In an emotional meeting, Kelsey Empfield stepped down as CAB Chair Tuesday evening. Empfield will be student teaching during the spring semester and had to give up her position of CAB Chair. Vice Chair of Programming Andy Martin will be taking over. Chelsea Evans was voted in as the new vice chair of programming.

Molly O’Connell, Annie Johnson, and Courtney LaMout were elected as members to sit on the Activity Fee Board.

Tena Cook, CSC marketing coordinator, presented to CAB about the merit pages online. The page offers students the option to share their accomplishment oncampus with their social medias.

Martin said Sunday is the last free movie night of the semester and the movies playing are “Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1;” “Horrible Bosses 2;” and “Penguins of Madagascar.”

Kelly McNaab, vice chair of finance, reported $2,908.52 in unallocated funds.

CAB also allocated $2,000 for free movie night.

Stephanie Steele, vice chair of records, reminded clubs to turn in their club pack-

ets by the end of the semester, and to give CAB an updated constitution.

Laure Sinn, CAB adviser, wanted to put a “bug in your ear,” about possibly going to a leadership conference in Cheyenne, Wyoming next semester. She would want to open this conference up to any student.

The Nest announced themes for this weekend’s basketball games. Friday’s game will be an ugly sweater theme and Saturday’s game will be a redneck theme.

The Wildlife club announced that the Rocky Mountain Elk Club Foundation wants to start a student level club on campus and for more information students can attend the wildlife club’s meeting on Thursday.

There will be a Madrigal Dinner Saturday and Sunday. Tickets for the event are $35 a piece and it includes a three-course meal and a capella entertainment from various singing groups on-campus.

Public Relations club asked CAB for $262.75 for T-shirts for its member. The board said they are not able to supply the money for the shirts unless clubs have used up all the funds allocated for them at the beginning of the year.

There was also an announcement to inform students that there are spots still open on Senate.

Senate presents leadership skills learned at conference Eagle Staff The CSC Student Senate hosted a conference Tuesday and Wednesday in the Student Center Ponderosa Room. The first presentation by Senate Vice President Taylor Strong covered conflict resolution, communication, and personal leadership.

Student Trustee Jacob Rissler presented next, and covered publicity, public speaking, and public relations, mediated communication, and Disney’s leadership model.

Senate President Dillon Spies’ presented, “More Action Less Title.” He talked about empowerment, motivation, and being appreciative.

Student-at-Large Representative Coy Clark, who travelled with Student Senate to Orlando, Florida, for the Leadership Conference, presented three topics including conflict mediation, public relations, and managing a professional life.

Wednesday’s presentations began with Vice Chair Kirby Krogman, who spoke about Conflict Resolution: “The Fight Club.”

He discussed three items including “Talk about Fight Club;” “Fight with Style;” and “Create a no Fight Club.”

Under each item, Krogman outlined cer-

tain important aspects, including, focus on purpose, not position; collaborating; a person should know his or her conflict style, while also knowing others; and treat others how they want to be treated.

Chief Justice Jon Lordino’s presentation focused on the last keynote speaker at the NCSL conference, who outlined how to deal with problems and manage conflict.

Lordino outlined several concepts presented at the conference, including the four P’s of great leaders—permission, participation, practice, and play. Conference attendees were encouraged to stretch themselves, cocreate, and lead by example. It is not enough to simply tell others what to do; we must do those things ourselves.

Senate Secretary Nathaniel Brown focused on Disney’s style of leadership. He presented the effects that personal values, motivation, and involvement can have on goals and dreams.

The final presentation by Senator-atLarge Marci Luton and Senator of Liberal Arts Courtney Bustillos, focused on how four colors—blue, orange, gold, and green— relate to a person’s leadership characteristics.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Deena Kennell on Nov 20. editorial Dear Editor: I am writing in response to various and assorted criticisms aired by the paper regarding the Chadron State College Student Senate, specifically the most recent editorial, (It’s time to declaw student gov. fatcats, Nov. 20.)

In it the readers are instructed how to go about removing representatives and those in office from their positions and goes on further to explain how ludicrous it is to have to go to that much work to make a change in the student governing body.

Let me be very, very clear that I am not suggesting that some actions aren’t deserving of public scrutiny, and that I am aware that part of the job of taking a public office is that you open yourself up for criticism because you can’t possibly make everyone happy.

What I take offense by is the suggestion that the existing process for implementing a change is just simply too onerous to deserve the effort it might take to accomplish that change. The writer finds it much easier to make a public mockery of the existing democratic process but gives no suggestion for what might actually be an effective strategy for change.

It is easier to make anonymous criticisms than to put oneself in the public eye for others to criticize.

Of that there is no doubt.

What is of doubt, however, is that there are really very many people on this campus who truly give a care about a positive action change.

Did you know that the most recent Student Senate officer election was the first in years in which more than one candidate ran for each office. Are you aware that only two of the six residence halls on campus have even bothered to have a representative in Senate? Are you aware of how the percentage of the Student Activity Fees that are going to support this leadership conference compares to the percentage that goes to Free Movie Night?

I challenge those of you who are so very disgruntled with your “wasteful, self-aggrandizing” Senate to actually join Senate and advance change by proposing changes to by-laws, or really go out on a limb and run for an office. I would caution you, though, that you might be setting yourself up for the public flogging that is so much easier to dish out through anonymity than it might be to take.

Make a difference. DO something. Remember that complaining about something is not the same as doing something.

See the bright side of Black Friday Jeff McFarland Columnist

D

espite what that e-mail from your extended family member says, the term “Black Friday” did not originate from slave auctions. Black Friday, as a phrase, originated somewhere in the 50s, when laborers would call in sick the Friday after Thanksgiving so they could have a four day weekend. In the 60s, the term was used to describe the sudden influx of foot-traffic as large amounts of people went Christmas shopping.

What was once a term used by Philadelphia police to describe pedestrians has now become an international spectacle. In the days following Black Friday, social media sites and news outlets alike light up with footage of stampedes, fist fights and disgusting human behavior in the name of American capitalism.

Those of us less fit for this Darwinian exercise sit back at home and watch the carnage unfold, opting instead to compete in the invisible race that is “Cyber Monday.”

Though the general consensus among most seems to be that a 60-inch television isn’t worth having your teeth kicked in, there is one aspect of the Black Friday fallout that I despise almost as much as I enjoy watching society tear itself apart over spectacular savings.

Commentators on Facebook and the like are first in line to demonize those risking their necks for purchased goods, and while I in no way condone the barbaric behavior Black Friday often yields, these holier-than-thou folks do not have the moral high ground that they pretend to. I’d wager to guess a lot of these people lead somewhat privileged lives: a TV of their own, a laptop of their own, food, water, a roof over their heads, etc. For them, Christmas means money from a relative or time spent with their family.

Why would they need anything else?

What they don’t understand is the “consumerist capitalist corporate machine, man” is the only chance some people have to give their families something spectacular for the holiday.

As touching as it is to claim that family time is a gift in and of itself, the reality is that many people return from the break complaining about their relatives.

Shocking as it may be to hear this, not everyone is as fortunate as you.

PS4 is a once-a-year luxury. Is it right to put others in danger for this? No, but if you don’t recognize the irony in criticizing capitalism via Facebook status on an overpriced internet connection, you have larger problems than your misplaced outrage.

The saddest part is, Black Friday doesn’t have to be the nightmare it is.

With a little foresight, shops could avoid the zombie horde built-up at their front doors. Requiring single file lines and giving redeemable cards on a first-comefirst-served basis for big ticket items eliminates the consumer’s need to race and battle for limited quantities of items.

On a similar note, shops need to plan accordingly for what they know will be an insane number of customers. If there’s enough to go around, there’s nothing to compete for.

It isn’t wrong to want to surprise someone with a lavish gift. It also isn’t wrong to want nicer or newer things. It’s just human nature. It’s when you decide to forsake priorities or the well being of others that problems occur.

The holidays can be a rough time for everyone. A time that’s supposed to be focused on relaxation and reconnecting with family members often degenerates into a rat race for gifts and an argument over time allotment. This holiday season, be grateful for the people and the things that are already in your life.

New TV or not, Black Friday can be just as bright as the rest of the holiday season.

Cynical columnist continues complaining Spike Jordan Opinion Editor

O

n Oct. 31, 1517, a German priest named Martin Luther nailed a list of complaints to a cathedral door. The list contained things he saw wrong with the Catholic Church. Luther’s list became popular and spawned the Christian protestant sect. However, it wasn’t the first “viral” list. Moses beat him to the punch several thousand years prior with his famous list, “Top-Ten Things That Piss God Off.” See? The hipsters at BuzzFeed didn’t invent the viral-listicle; Moses and Luther did it before it was cool.

Where am I going with this?

I have a list of things that I see wrong with the Student Senate, and ways that they can fix them.

I’ll nail my list to the Senate office door for Senate to look at over the break because I’ve been beat on the head enough-times this week with the phrase “don’t complain without offering solutions.” That’s fine and dandy; I’ll take that to heart.

But for this article, I want to complain about student activity fees and how they are being spent. I know everyone is tired of reading about this, but no one seems to get why the editorials beat a dead horse.

To their credit, the Senate delegation didn’t spend all of the $18,500 allocation.

Senate President Dillon Spies told me that he won’t have the figures available until the State Comptroller’s office releases them, but that their air-fare was significantly cheaper than the $700 per-ticket that Senate originally budgeted for.

I attended three of the Student Senate’s leadership presentations on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagle is short on staff reporters, so I covered three-hour’s worth. Vice-President Taylor Strong, Student Trustee Jacob Rissler, and Spies all gave wonderful presentations to a captive audience: Senior Director for Student Affairs Pat Beu, a handful of senators, CAB executives, and I. It seems that apathy is rampant on campus.

If a leadership presentation is held in a forest, and no one is around to hear about it, is it still a leadership presentation? I thought about a solution: The Eagle could publish features about the leadership and what they’ve learned. However, that’s timeintensive and the presentations were scheduled with short notice; we didn’t have time to prepare. We have deadlines to meet, finals to fail, and we are short on writers. I’m

sorry if I’m cynical, but it’s not my job to be the sycophantic Public Relations executive for the Student Senate. We report on what they do and how much they spend. During times of necessity, we offer commentary.

However, if Senators want to write columns about things on campus that they care about or are trying to accomplish, we would happily accept them and share them with our readers. The free press is important to democracy, and I’ve always had open pages.

I’m begging for press releases or for Senate to publish meeting agendas a week in advance so that we can prepare and communicate that to our audience.

If people can read about what’s planned, they can take time out of their schedule and actually attend Senate meetings. If they can’t, they can write a letter to the editor and give their input. The Eagle is funded with student activity fees, meaning any student can write for us. Senate is letting that resource go to waste. We have readers, and if you want to engage students and faculty, write. Communicate. How hard is that to understand?

Now, I need to balance my criticism here with praise. I didn’t attend the other sessions, but I was impressed that Strong, Rissler, and Spies actually seemed like they learned something. They are trying to be good leaders. No matter how cynical I am, I won’t criticize someone for literally, “giving it the college try.”

However, I’m consistent in the principle behind my argument: Student Activity fees should be spent on something that has a demonstrated and tangible benefit to the general population. It’s essentially student tax-dollars being spent on a few people, but Senate and its advisers seem to overlook that fact.

Adviser Susan Schaeffer has argued something to the effect that the Student Senate is “an administrative body,” and therefore is entitled to spend student funds with no oversight.

However, Nebraska State College System Chancellor Stan Carpenter said last fall that

Nebraska State Colleges are “stewards of the public trust and the public treasure.”

“Administrative bodies” are created under NSCS Board Policy, so I’d imagine that Carpenter’s charge of stewardship extends to the Senate. Other “bodies” on campus have to do their own fund-raising if they want to attend a conference or host a Christmas party. During one meeting last fall, we reported when Schaeffer stepped-in to turn away students requesting student activity fees to help pay for travel to a conference (Senate hears two proposals, directs to other sources, Oct. 23, 2013). The logic is that club conference are not what student activity fees are for. But, the “law,” in this instance, is somehow above… well… itself.

If the Senate were actually entitled to spend students money on its members professional development, rather than Senators fund-raising like everyone else, then the account would be called the “Senate Activity Fee.” This is not the case.

I believe Schaeffer is giving Senators the wrong idea; that they are entitled to certain “perks” for belonging to that organization, or that they are outside the same processes that other students have to uphold. In my mind, a good adviser would discourage selfishness and scrutinize spending decisions, rather than create an environment where they are encouraged to seek that privilege.

But again, to be fair to the advisers, Senate adviser Deena Kennell raised a number of good points in her letter to the editor this week. I appreciate her comments, as well as those in Jon Lordino’s letter earlier in the semester. The more other’s write, the less I have to. I don’t want to talk; I want to listen.

In her letter, Kennell asks a particularly important question; “Are you aware of how the percentage of the Student Activity Fees that are going to support this leadership conference compares to the percentage that goes to Free Movie Night?”

I’m grateful that she asked that question because I can answer: Yes we are aware, but no, we don’t care. Here is why: even though Free Movie Night is a more regular and costly expenditure, every student has an equal opportunity to benefit from free movie night. They can go downtown on a Sunday night, stand in line, and get a ticket.

The movie theater is not in Orlando or New Orleans. They don’t have to write a letter to the Senate. They don’t have to cross their fingers and hope they win the faculty adviser-lottery in order to get a ticket. If that were the process for free movie night, then we would most certainly criticize it.

While more money is spent on Free

Movie Nights than leadership conferences; more students have an equal opportunity to benefit from that spending directly. Only 10 students were able to directly benefit from this leadership conference. Two of the delegates; Rissler, a Senior; and Chief Justice Jon Lordino, a graduate student; attended last year’s conference in New Orleans. They should have given up their seats, but they didn’t.

In theory, the more people that go, the more it’s beneficial to the student body. Beu tried to make that argument after Strong’s presentation; he said that these leadership conferences “help plant seeds for future leadership on campus.” I drew exception to his remark, but I bit my tongue because I couldn’t comment as a reporter. It’s not about how many people go, it’s about who goes and who pays for it.

The argument that “anyone from the student body can attend,” is incorrect. While two seats were opened up to students, the provisions were that you had to write a letter to the Senate, at which point the names were removed and the advisers, not the students, decided who got a slot. Sure, every student had the opportunity, but who made the cut?

I was one of the respondents. I wrote in for laughs, so I wasn’t surprised or upset when my letter was passed over. I was actually relieved, because I didn’t have time to attend the conference anyway. But, I’m willing to wager that the majority of the students who didn’t respond to Senate’s offer are the same majority that didn’t attend the conferences on Tuesday and Wednesday.

They either don’t have time or they simply don’t care.

It’s easy to spend money on stuff that students care about (movies), and then have a good turnout. But most of the student body is here to get a diploma and leave. The issue is that Senate spends student’s money on professional development for a handful of people, but then denies that same opportunity to students who petition for similar access to those funds. My ears are open to any adviser or Senator that wants to explain to me not only how that’s judicious use, but how that reasoning constitutes responsible stewardship.

In closing, Rissler mentioned during his presentation that Disney’s leadership model has no room for cynicism. I’m sorry that I’m a cynic but, I won’t hide that fact. I guess my dreams of working for Disney Public Relations are never going to be realized.

However, this article isn’t meant to be “negative.” Rather, in my eyes, it is necessary.

Ramadan begins June 29 and ends July 28, 29 and is the ninth month the Islamic calendar. The celebration begins and ends on the first sighting of the moon.

During this time, people begin fasting for the holiday. People included in the fasting is all physically and mentally healthy Muslims.

In addition to fasting, there are five pillars of Islam, including confession of faith, Zaka, five daily prayers, and Hajji.

Hanukkah is an eight-day celebration that begins on the 25 of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar, which is the equivalent to the months November and December.

On each of the eight days, after sundown, a candle is lite on the Menorah. Food such as potato pancakes and jam-filled donuts are eaten during this celebration.

People also exchange gifts, some of which are dreidels, a spinning top.

Christmas Eve Dec. 24, and Christmas, which takes place Dec. 25, is a time for families to gather around a decorated tree.

Families travel far and wide to visit other family members, and take a family photo to cherish the moment when everyone can be together.

Traditionally, families buy presents for their loved ones and

friends, and on these particular days, delight in watching those people open the presents.

Mounds of food are eaten, including turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, and desserts.

The night of Dec. 24, children head to bed early so that Santa Clause will arrive and fills their stockings hanging by the tree with presents and candy.

Pancha Ganapati Kwanzaa - Hindu - African American Pancha Ganapati takes place from Dec. 21-25 to worship the elephant-headed Lord Ganesha.

This holiday has family outings, picnics, feasts, and exchanges of cards and gifts.

A shrine of Ganesha is built in each home, and every morning, children of the house decorate the shrine with the color of the day. Each different color represents one of Ganesha’s five rays of energy.

Families also worship Ganesha, chant and sing songs in his praise, and children prepare sweets and fruits, which are offered to Ganesha.

Kwanzaa is celebrated from Dec. 26-Jan. 1, and first began in 1966. Kwanza honors Ancient African cultures.

There are seven days of honoring, including unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility; cooperative economics; sense of purpose; creativity; and faith.

The colors used to celebrate with are red, black, and green.

These colors are used for decoration.

Kwanzaa has seven symbols used also. They are Mazao (The Crops); Mkeka (The Mat); Kinara (The Candle Holder); Muhindi (The Corn); Mishumaa Saba (The Seven Candles); and Zawadi (The Gifts).

Women’s team will host 2 games William McLaughlin Uyen Han Reporters Forward Jordan Spencer, senior of Omaha, scored a game-high 22 points.

Two other players scored double figures as the NCAA-ranked #2, Wayne State College, defeated CSC 88-50 on Nov. 21.

Forwards Millie Niggeling, senior of Sioux City, Iowa, and Paige Ballinger, freshman of Pender, scored 21 and 18 points, respectively, to help Wayne State earn its fourth straight win. The Wildcats held a 40-30 lead at halftime and carried that momentum in the second half, outscoring the Eagles 48-20. Wayne State opened up the second half with an 18-3 scoring run and led by as much as 40 points.

CSC shot well in the first half, making over 50 percent of their shots but only took 23 shot attempts, compared to Wayne State’s 33. CSC’s forward Maka Daysh, freshman of Tauranga, New Zealand, scored a team-high 11 points. Guard Kate Simonton, senior of Bakersfield, California, was second, scoring 10 points.

Defensively, CSC struggled to stop Wayne State inside the paint, giving up 36 points.

“We struggled against their posts most of the night, but that’s still no excuse,” said Head Coach Tim Connealy.

“We struggled shooting the ball as well and need to improve if we want to beat teams like Wayne State.”

The CSC women’s basketball team’s losing streak continued as South Dakota School of Mines soared past the Eagles,

65-49, in a non-conference game Friday.

The Eagles started out strong with a 10-3 lead and made 12 of 17 free throws, leading 29-26 at halftime. There were seven lead changes in the second half, and it was a pretty even contest until the Hardrockers came up with some big shots and got some even bigger stops to slowly distance themselves. Over the final 20 minutes, South Dakota Mines outscored the Eagles, 39-20.

Individually, center Stacy Hull, freshman of Broomfield, Colorado, came off the bench to lead the Hardrockers with 14 points while guard Alexis Long, junior of New Hope, Minnesota, contributed 12 points.

While no one reached double figures for the Eagles, Daysh led Chadron State with nine points and Simonton added eight.

Playing their first games for the Eagles, point guard Emma Block, junior of Copenhagen, Denmark, and forward Ruby Luders, freshman of Adelaide, South Australia, tallied seven points.

The Eagles scored 18 of 28 from the free throw line whereas the Hardrockers made 12 of 23. Mines shot 45 percent from the field, hitting 25-56 buckets while Chadron State connected on 14-56 for 25 percent.

Another factor in the game was Mines’ ability to force baskets in the paint earning 32 points while Chadron State only marked 17.

The Eagles, currently 0-4 this season, will host Colorado Mesa University tomorrow and Western State Colorado University Saturday to start conference play. Tip-off times for both games are at 5:30 p.m.

4 Eagles named to Academic All-American Jordyn Hulinsky Sports Editor

Four CSC football players have been awarded the Capital One Academic AllAmerican Award. Like last year, CSC’s football team provided the most Division II players selected. CSC has two more than any other RMAC school. Players are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Jacob Anderson, sophomore of Central City, 149-pounds, and Cooper Cogdill, freshman of Chadron, 197-pounds, each earned first place, winning five of five matches.

“I feel like I really opened up at UNK,” Anderson said. “In the tournaments before, I was held back and didn’t wrestle how I usually do. At UNK, I wrestled smart and pushed the pace, and that worked good for me.”

Other place winners included Taylor Summers, sophomore of Plymouth, 133-pounds, finished second place; Terrance McKinney, sophomore of Spokane, Washington, 149-pounds, in third place; Brock Thumm, freshman of Watervliet, Michigan, 141-pounds, and Caleb Copeland, sophomore of Bennett, Colorado, 174-pounds, finished fifth; and at 197-pounds, amateur Zach Thompson, freshman

of Powell, Wyoming, and elite Devon Fors, senior of Roseburg, Oregon, finishing in sixth place.

All of the Eagle placeholders competed in the Amateur division except Fors, who competed in the Elite, or older, division.

Summers went 4-1, falling to P.T. Garcia of the University of Wyoming in the finals. McKinney went 6-1 and Thumm and Copeland each went 4-2 during the tournament.

“I didn’t finish the tournament the way I wanted, but overall I felt pretty good about the way I wrestled,” Summers said. “I was a lot more offensive and pushed the pace more so than the first couple tournaments, which is a step forward.”

This weekend, the CSC wrestlers will travel to Great Falls, Montana, to compete in the Argo Duals Friday and the University of Great Falls Open Tournament Saturday. Thirteen competitors will be making the trip.

“We will see some of the best teams in the country with NAIA and NCAA Division II programs,” Hunter said. “We will see where we are at with a young squad making the trip.”

“My mind set for the upcoming duals is just to go out there and work the moves that I’m best at,” Anderson said. “I can’t get caught up in what the other guy is trying to do, I just need to do what works best for me.”

3.94 GPA, were selected to the first team.

They were both selected to the second team last year. They are the fifth and sixth players in Chadron State’s history to earn more than one Academic All-American award.

Bauer, a criminal justice and family and consumer science major with a 3.85 GPA, and Wentz, a business administration with a 4.0 GPA, were honored on the second team.

In the past 40 years, there have been 22 CSC football players to earn Academic AllAmerican awards.

To earn the All-American award, student-athletes must be a starter or important player to the team. The studentathlete must maintain a 3.30 cumulative GPA. Student-athletes have to play in at least half of the team’s games. Studentathletes must complete one full calendar year at his/her college and be a sophomore in athletic eligibility.

Cross country teams improve at Regionals Christopher Smith Reporter The men’s cross country team placed 11th this past weekend at the South Central Regional Championships in Denver. Runners took on a course through Washington Park.

The Eagles improved seven places in the team’s standings from a year ago.

Junior Evans Koech, of Nairobi, Kenya, led the Eagles. Koech placed 27th out of 138 runners with a time of 33:29 seconds. He was also the first Eagle to cross the finish line last year placing 39th. Shortly after, junior Alejandro Garcia, of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, placed 37th with a time of 33:50. Following him was freshman Eric Yager, of Hot Springs, South Dakota,

finished in 35:15 and placed 74th.

The women’s cross country team placed 12th this year in competition, placing one spot below last year’s finish.

The women were led by Jayme Nunes, junior of Alliance. She finished 43rd out of 127 competitors. She finished with a time of 24:28. Following her was sophomore Nicky Banzhaf, of Chadron, placing 63rd with a time of 25:05. Both improved on last year’s performances, finishing 54th and 115th, respectively.

The Adams State men’s and women’s teams swept the team titles this year.

All but one of the teams advancing to nationals are from the RMAC. The national championships will be held Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky.

Cops and robbers compete at intersquad dual Uyen Han Reporter The track and field team’s intersquad dual left the athletes both contented and regretful as the competition was a good chance to test the athletes’ ability and improve themselves before the season kicks off.

The intersquad dual was a friendly competition to assess athletes’ performance and help them get used to competing again. The team was divided into two equal squads.

This year’s theme was cops and robbers. The runners dressed up in simple costumes, mostly just enough to see who was who, and many took the costumes off to prevent interference with performance.

Although it seemed to be a fun event, the competition was also a chance for the coaches to see each athlete’s ability, and for the athletes to prove their accomplishments from hard pre-season practice. The events would de-

cide some athletes’ fate as either team A runners or team B runners, therefore the dual was still a competitive night for both runners and fans.

The competition involved a variety of events, including 40 yard dash, 5-step high jump, pole vault, 55m hurdles, weight throw, long jump, 250m dash, shot put, triple jump, women 58 second dash, men 48 second dash, team free throw, and 4x360m relay.

Many runners seemed to be nervous at the start of the race, as some competitors false started. To raise the tension, the gun did not go off a few times, creating a sense of nervousness among spectators. Luckily, the competitors and coaches tried to tell some jokes to lighten the mood.

Many friends and family members came to support the runners. After all, family members, friends, and the coaches are the ones who know how much the athletes love the sports and how much hard work they have

put in since the beginning.

A college athlete is allowed to practice six days a week with a total of 20 hours.

Bradley Gamble, track and field’s interim head coach, said they practiced around 15-16 hours a week with a lot of sprinting, running, jumping, and weight lifting.

“If I do their warm-ups, I’m sweating, and I’m tired.

And they just do that as their warm-ups,” Gamble said, “They’re in good shape, and they work very hard.”

Just like many other competitions, the results depend on many factors, and one of the most important factors is the athlete’s mental strength. Some might do poorly and could not show all they had. Others might have done better than they ever expected. But no matter what the results were, the intersquad dual was a good opportunity to test what they have accomplished, to point out their errors, and to give them a chance to improve even more.

Senior art students display projects at Art Show Megan O’Leary Reporter

Many years of dedication and hard work resulted in the 2014 Senior Art Show, located in the Main Gallery of Memorial Hall. The show is open to the public Nov. 17- Dec. 5.

The Senior Art Show features the work of five seniors: Arielle Boone, 23, of Buffalo, Wyoming; Kevin Kubo, 34, of Chadron; Ashley Young, 23, of Gordon; Krystal Gaar, 21, senior of Grant; and Mattie Churchill, 22, of Hemingford.

The show featured a variety of different pieces by each student. The work ranged from photographs, oil paintings, watercolor, pottery, sculptures, drawings, stained glass, and graphic designs.

The theme of the show was “What is Enough?” based on a Vincent Van Gogh quote.

The students not only created art pieces for the show but arranged and organized the open house.

“It has been a very big learning experience. We had to learn how to arrange, set up, and work together to make a successful gallery opening. It is something that I’ll never forget.

Though it does help when you have wonderful students to work with,” Kubo said.

The art show has allowed the students to reflect on their time at CSC and the skills they have developed over the years.

Audio tour accessible to students, public Jessica Thiele Reporter The Chadron State College Audio Tour was created in spring of 2013, around the same time as the inauguration of President Randy Rhine.

So far, the tour has not been widely promoted because the tour has been gradually expanding as the campus expands.

The audio tour is basically a phone extension anyone can call to learn about the history of the college. All that needs to be done is locate a tour stop, call 408-794-7782, enter the tour stop number followed by the #, listen and enjoy the tour, and comment on the experience by dialing 0# at any time.

The tour is available to everyone, even those who do not live on campus or own smartphones. Even family back home can access the audio tour. Furthermore, there are no additional costs for calling the extension.

“We want to make it as usable as possible to as many people as possible,”

Mari Sandoz Center Museum Director Sarah Polak said. Most buildings on campus have voiceovers, but extensions are not yet available in some of the new buildings.

As I sat in Polak’s office with her, we listened to a couple of the files online, first the clip for the Reta E. King Library, then the clip for the Sandoz Center. Spike Jordan, 26, senior of Harrison, is the speaker for the voiceovers.

The creation of the audio tour was a great way to commemorate the college’s rich history.

According to a brochure I picked up in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center, the audio tour was created and is maintained by the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center at Chadron State College.

It is also sustained through the financial support of the Office of the President of Chadron State College. The significant historical information is provided by Con Marshall, information services officer of the office of the president.

“She is very good at it,” Robbins said.

Cook brought photo albums containing her gingerbread houses images and cutout samples from magazines served as examples of how the houses could be built.

“Forty years ago I made my first three,” Cook said. “I went to a class when I was 12 with my mom, and we just decided that is what we wanted to do.”

Cook said it takes about six hours to build each house. It is her hobby. She made sleighs, train stations, and regular houses.

Before big projects, which were different from the regular houses, Cook created the design of it. She makes about 10 houses every year and teaches others how to do it. All built houses are edible. She said the biggest project was a train station, which took about 12 hours to complete.

In addition to Christmas holidays, Cook also makes gingerbread houses at Valentine’s Day, Easter and Thanksgiving day. It is a tradition in her family.

The Pit organized a mini Gingerbread House Building entertainment project Nov. 21 in the Student Center.

Students learned how to make gingerbread houses. They used bread pieces, crackers to put them together with royal icing. Afterward they sprinkled the houses with sugar confectioner’s powder, multicolored candies, pretzels, marshmallows and candy canes. More than 20 students attended this event.

“It is different from what we [the Pit stuff members] usually do,” said Jennie Robbins, senior of Mitchell. “We just started it last year, people enjoyed it.”

5k draws runners of all ages Frozen Turkey Trot hosted for fifteenth year.

Brittany Province Reporter Chadron Community Recreation, HPER Associate Professor Donna Ritzen hosted the Frozen Turkey Trot Nov. 22.

With an entry fee of $20 and a free t-shirt 10 people signed up to run the 5k around the campus and onto the trails. Ritzen has been doing the Frozen Turkey Trot for 15 years, and hosts it the Saturday before Thanksgiving.

Once the contestants sign up for the race they put their name in for a draw-

ing for a chance to win a coupon to Pizza Hut, Taco Johns, or a Hi-Tech Car Care Card, and the New Leaf Jelly Bellies. The Chadron Wrestling team donated a couple prizes such as a CSC wrestling baseball cap, and a CSC wrestling beanie. The winners from the men and women’s groups would both win a frozen turkey as the main prize from the race.

The winners from the men and women’s divisions of the race are Angie Schafer, 20, junior of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Monte Adams of Harrison. The next race that Ritzen will host will be Fat Tuesday; the date has yet to be set.
