Student affairs director leaving CSC to Colorado

Another snowy day

“I’ve loved the people that I’ve worked with and working closely with the students,” Prestwich said.

Before being promoted to senior director of student affairs in May of 2012, Prestwich was the director of the TRiO center for three years.

He received a master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado in rehabilitation counseling, and a bachelor’s degree in Prestwich exercise science, also from UNC. Prestwich’s last day at CSC will be Dec. 12.

Ashley Swanson News Editor Senior Director of Student Affairs Aaron Prestwich, is leaving CSC en route for Fort Range Community College, Westminster.

He and his family are packing up and moving there after he was appointed as the dean of student service. Prestwich saw that particular job and applied for it, and was named a finalist shortly after.

“I’ll miss Chadron State a lot,” he said.

For the current moment there is no one set up to fill his position, which he has held for a year and a half. Prestwich said they will probably have people apply for it. In the mean time, his responsibilities will be split up; however, Jon Hansen, vice president of enrollment management and marketing, will be assuming most of

In celebration of Native American Month, the Learning the Native American Culture event, which took place in the Student Center Ballroom, Friday, Nov. 22, started off with a supper for the first 30 people to attend.

After the supper, which consisted of soup, bread, and cranberry sauce, many dance routines were presented by students from the Red Cloud Indian School.

Stressed students: Find your drive and live once more

I

am tired.

Over the course of this semester, I have stretched myself to the breaking point. And I know that I’m not the only one.

Just yesterday, as I walked down the hallway, I heard someone say, “I told my sister the truth about college. That I have lost the ability to live.”

God did that stick out to me.

I once went to classes eager and excited. I am a learner. And I love to learn.

Now, however, my anxiety drags

me back into bed. I walk through the halls zombified, feeling like the weight of everything could very well crush me.

And if I am crushed, well, at least I won’t have to worry about all the crap I have to do. I have even toyed with the idea of giving up the piece of paper with my name on it that I’m supposed to get this spring. Even writing for this newspaper, which once brought me a great deal of joy, brings me only late nights of tears and hair pulling.

I’ve lost the ability to live. I forgot why I decided to pursue literature, a major famous for churning out Starbucks baristas.

It was because I loved it, once. I once loved to read and write and learn. And when people asked what I wanted to do when I graduated, it didn’t matter, because I just knew that I was learning and enjoying school.

Now, I bury myself in books I don’t like to try and eek out information for my homework assign-

ments. School has become less about enjoying classes, and more about pulling baloney off the top of my head to put together homework assignments I no longer care about.

One of my favorite movies is “Accepted” a 2006 movie where Bartleby Gaines, a high school slacker, is rejected by every college he applies to, and begins his own.

At one point, he goes to a fancy university to “figure this whole college thing out.” While he’s there, it shows him standing among people rushing through the halls, and talking to caffeine addicts who snap, “This is gonna be on the test, I can’t afford to miss it.”

So Bartleby goes back to his own school and asks the students what they want to learn. And they say, “I’ve never been asked that before.”

I think that this movie really captures how I’ve been feeling lately.

This semester, I’ve been taking classes I need to graduate. Classes I care about very little. And it’s pushed me into a rut where I just

feel depressed and sick. Constantly.

In November, I decided to take on Nation Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo. For NaNoWriMo, participants try to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. Now you might be thinking, “Sara, why add more stress on yourself?”

However, trying to write a 50,000 word novel was more like stress relief. For the first time in ages, I set aside some time every day to do something that I wanted to do.

I love to write, and I seem to have forgotten that somewhere in the past four years as I wrote essay after essay about things that I didn’t necessarily find interesting or relevant.

Over break and into next semester, I have decided to re-kindle my love for what I do.

I’m going to read for fun, which seems like a strange concept now.

I’m going to write when it’s for me.

I’m going to research things that interest me.

I came to school to be a learner, not a student. And I want to love

learning. That’s something I can’t accomplish by beating myself up while I take tests about jazz music.

Perhaps you came to college to be a learner as well, and have lost your love for it too. Try to do the same.

Set aside time to do the things you love, rather than bringing yourself down with the stress of things you don’t.

When you’re trying to get back your ability to live, you may have to shed some things that you know are bad for you.

Consider this column as my farewell to The Eagle. After four years of working as an editor, I have found that the panic attacks that pressnights have brought me are just not worth it anymore. I cannot lose one more hair over something that I don’t truly love.

I don’t want to lose my ability to live. I want to be excited for classes again. And I hope that everyone who reads this will agree, and try to get back their ability to live, just like I plan to.

Make a difference instead of creating excuses

any people strive, on a daily basis, to make a difference in the world, but a great number of those many people do not believe it is possible.

A change of attitude or a boost in the right direction could be one of the things a person needs. Many different perspectives are imaginable and a positive, ambitious attitude will produce the greatest results in any situation.

Whether you intend to lift the spirits of individuals singularly, or you hope to be a known influence throughout a state, nation, or even the world, you should know that if one’s person life changes for the better, you did a great thing.

It might seem like only the most pow-

erful and famous inspirations have been effective. However, the most influential events often end up being the ones that deeply encourage particular individuals to take actions to improve their life, another life, or any situation.

Madison Kimrey, a 12-year-old voting rights activist, is a textbook example of a seemingly helpless individual that has inspired, persuaded, and informed many people that one person really can “change the world.” Kimrey is determined to reintroduce pre-registration for 16- and 17-yearolds in her home state of North Carolina.

Kimrey is a very young lady who is wellinformed, and feels strongly about her rights as a U.S. citizen. She is truly passionate about the privileges she can receive and has made it a goal to gain those rights.

Being involved at events and making herself known throughout her hometown has given her the opportunity to start organizations, be an advocate, meet with Gov. Pat McCrory, and even speak in response to him.

The response Kimrey gave to McCrory proves how informed and passionate she is. It is incredible to hear how well-spoken she is.

Her speaking experience seems to exceed that of most high school students, as does her education level. She is an inspiration

even if a voting rights issue does not intrigue you.

There were four actions outline in the previous paragraphs that are vital to making a difference: be well-informed, remain passionate, get involved, and make yourself known. If you follow these examples of Kimrey’s instead of making excuses, like I often find myself doing, you will find yourself making a bigger impact than you thought possible. With a little thought and explanation, you might realize why each is important, and how much of an impact you didn’t realize each could have.

First: be knowledgeable and up-to-date about information. This is how respect can be earned from others. A person who knows exactly what they are talking about can easily provide examples and a variety of information. Engaging with viewers is important and can prove the doubters wrong.

In the example case, Kimrey is unusually knowledgeable about the subject. Mainly because of her age and overall expected intelligence level, she has a lot to prove to her listeners. Her consistency verifies her knowledge, though, and she has become respected in the political world of N.C. Second: remain passionate. Passionate does not seem like a strong enough word to explain how Kimrey feels about her rights as a voter. The passion she has for the issue

is undoubtedly solid and she cannot help but show it when she speaks.

If you are not passionate about something, I assume that you have no intentions of making a difference based on that subject. The passion for a specific thing is likely to be what invented the desire to make a difference. Losing passion is going to force you to fail at your attempt.

Third: get involved. Make the subject that you are passionate about a bigger part of your life. In the beginning it might be hard, but starting organizations, big or small, is a simple and easy way to start your involvement and even prove your passion.

An example that Kimrey provides is her organization called North Carolina Youth Rock which promotes the rights of young voters. Whatever it is that you want to promote, creating a Facebook page for it seems possibly pointless, but it is a simple way to begin what could be a greatly effective and inspirational event.

Finally: make yourself known. It is extremely hard to do this, but everyone has to start somewhere. To do this, you must also stay determined. Starting with the things that seem too small to matter is more important and can end up being the most helpful in the end.

EDITORIAL–THE EAGLE’S VIEW

What’s in an opinion?

We have been toying around in the newsroom with a concept for our last editorial of the semester. We decided on an opinion about opinions; a ‘Meta-torial.’

I

n his book, “The Enchirdon,” stoic philosopher Epictitus offered wisdom about opinions in the first aphorism.

“Some things are in our control and others not. Things in our control are opinion, pursuit, desire, aversion, and, in a word, whatever are our own actions.

Things not in our control are body, property, reputation, command, and, in one word, whatever are not our own actions.”

The nature of an opinion is a judgement, statement, or view point that surrounds a subject. When you use facts to inform your judgements or to shape your views, it is said that you are making an argument.

Depending on how you’ve structured those facts will determine how sound or flawed your arguments are, and how well they can be weighed against the arguments of others.

However, it can never be guaranteed that two people will see the same set of facts and form the same opinion. That’s why opinions will always be subjective in nature.

So since an opinion is a personal possession, subjective in nature, and under your control, you have a lot of power over your opinion, but you also have the responsibility to use your power wisely. It is best to form your opinions based on sound arguments because that helps you be understood.

Many politicians and celebrities have made themselves a fool by stepping on their soapbox and shouting an ignorant opinion.

While they have the power and freedom to do so, they’re not immune from criticism.

Looking back to Epictitus’s comments, we see that reputation is not in our control. How others view your arguments and opinions are going to be based on how they choose to perceive you, rather than how you present yourself.

So you’re free to the powers of your own opinions, but when you choose to voice a poorly formed opinion, everyone else is just as free to criticize you for voicing it.

For example, I don’t even know my neighbors, and I have lived in the same house for a while now. People you have lived next to for years don’t even say hi to you, and you sure aren’t getting any help from them when you need it.

When I think about it, I know that conservatism isn’t a bad thing. There are many issues that conservative people don’t have. I am not going to go into details, but some people know what I am talking about.

When you lived in the Midwest for a while, you just appreciate the culture.

You appreciate how people care and think about their families. You also have a great deal of respect for these young ladies following in their parents’ footsteps and keep the conservative culture alive.

While I’m not saying we should all be conservative, it’s nice to see that liberalism hasn’t destroyed the unique family values found in the Midwest.

Discovering relationships vs. imposing Concept: the authors collaborated and wanted to offer their opinion about relationships through a wild-west narrative.

T

he batwing doors of an old, western saloon had barely swung open for business before a weathered gunslinger trudged in and retired at the bar. Glowing from the rays of the rising sun that beamed through a window, he rested his head on crossed forearms. He and the bartender, a young blonde, conversed over the oaken bar between them; he unloaded his burdens and she listened with interest.

“What is it like to be you?” She asked, leaving all pre-conceived notions of such persons behind.

“Each day the morning sun will rise once more,” he began as he uncrossed his arms and wearily poured himself his first shot from the bottle of bourbon before him.

“I feel the heat rise in my cheeks and know the coming of another morning sun dooms me to fall a little further down this land’s notorious great gorge of death.”

As he was about to down the first shot of his bourbon, a second customer burst into the saloon, a younger fellow who went by the name Blondie. He gasped at the site of the other customer with alcohol.

“Come on, cousin. You know you’re not supposed to drink. I knew you were going to find the bottle today, but it’s not even high noon yet. How are you supposed to guide me, your city slickin’ cousin, through the West when you can’t see straight?” Blondie skipped into the

seat next to his cousin.

“The weather here is amazing though,” he began cheerily as he took away the tin shot glass from his cousin’s hand. “I feel hot and warm at the same time here. It’s like the ninth circle of heaven.”

“It’s the ninth circle of Hell, Blondie,” the gunslinger corrected him and retrieved his shot glass. “And that circle’s made of ice, anyway.” Blondie shook the gunslinger’s fatigued body.

“Get ahold of yourself and stop talking about weather. We both know why I came to the West: To find the perfect woman--a short, sable-haired, conservative gal.”

At this interjection, one the bartender would describe as serendipitous, she said to the first customer, “Funny. I too am versed in the classics.”

The doors swung open once more to lead way to a third customer: a sablehaired young gal.

Blondie whispered to the gunslinger, “That is the girl! Watch while I make the moves.”

As she approached the bar, he intercepted her with an innocent grin.

“The name’s Blondie, I’m a real-life gunslinger.” He drew a pistol from his cousin’s holster, and as he spun the gun around he said, “My draw is the perfect speed. It’s fast, but not too fast. Just the perfect speed for dueling.”

The true gunslinger retrieved his weapon from Blondie and returned it to his holster.

“Careful there, little faux cowboy. You don’t know how to work that thing.”

“A little showmanship is a great way to woe the ladies,” Blondie whispered to his

cousin as if he was letting him in on profound wisdom.

“It’s woo,” the former said to the latter.

“Whatever. Watch this,” Blondie raced off again with his plans. “A drink for the lady please,” He bent to whisper to his cousin, “Any perfect girl of mine will drink bottled-courage.”

“Any drink?” The sable-haired lady asked. “I will have a shot of red-eye, then.” The gunslinger kept a poker face as Blondie looked at him for any sign of enjoyment he might’ve gained from his failure.

Cleaning the tables during this time, the bartender sat aside her dishrag. Once she was behind the bar again, she continued to converse with the gunslinger.

They found much in common to talk about, and so for them the day went smoothly.

Blondie found the sable-haired girl, who did indeed fit his imposed requirements, to be more complex of an individual than he had thought ideal. After an abysmal argument where the two made a mountain out of a mole-hill--which was about whether the hills outside the saloon were indeed hills or mountains--the sable-haired gal left the saloon.

“Thus she walked on out of your life forever,” Blondie’s cousin said to him.

“Well there was still one nice conversation today,” the bartender said, implying the one she and the gunslinger had. The latter, with Blondie moping behind, rose high to walk out of the saloon, but first left money on the counter.

“Indeed, ma’am. I’ll be back to spend the rest of that later.” With that, the doors swung open one last time.

Wrestling continues season after two week break Janelle Kesterson Reporter

After a two and a half week break in the meet schedule the Eagle wrestling team will take on the Dickinson State University Blue Hawks, N.D. The Blue Hawks will travel to Chadron from Dickinson Wednesday to compete with the Eagles beginning at 7 p.m. The Dickinson Blue Hawks are 2-1 on the season in duals whereas the Eagles are off to a rough start with a 0-3 dual record.

On Nov. 23, the Eagles traveled to Kearney to compete in the University of Nebraska-Kearney Holiday Inn Open. The meet was divided into two divisions: the Elite Division and the Amateur Division. The Eagles wrestled seven in the Elite Division and 11 in the Amateur Division.

In the Elite Division, Dustin Stodola, senior of Clarkson, won his three matches to become the 133-pound champion. Stodola won all three of his matches by decision. Stodola is now 10-0 on the year and that includes a victory over returning All-American Casy Rowell of Central Oklahoma.

Also in the Elite Division was Tyler Smart, junior of Wheatland, Wyo., 165-pounds. Smart won his first match against Kyle Pope of the University of Wyoming, Laramie, by decision; however, he lost his next two matches leaving Stodola as the only CSC champion in the Elite Division.

While the Eagles only won four matches in the Elite Division, they made a name for themselves in the Amateur Division winning 33 out of

53 total matches. The highest placing Eagle in the Amateur Division was CJ Clark, junior of Rapid City, S.D., 157-pounds. Clark won his first four matches, one by major decision and three by decision, which advanced him to the championship match. In the championship match, Clark fell to Juan Alvarado of New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas, by decision and a score of 6-5.

In addition to Clark, there were six other Eagle wrestlers to finish in the top six of the Amateur Division. They were Taylor Summers, redshirt freshman of Plymouth, 125-pounds; Jay Stine, redshirt freshman of Worland, Wyo., 141-pounds; Jacob Anderson, freshman of Central City, 149-pounds; Caleb Copeland, freshman of Bennett, Colo., 165-pounds; Stuart Hircock, freshman of Amherst, 185-pounds; and Rulon Taylor, freshman of Curtis, 285-pounds.

Summers won three of his five matches; each by decision, and Stine won all but one of his matches. Stine won four of his matches by decision, one by fall, and one by medical forfeit.

Anderson started the open strong with three wins; one decision, one major decision, and one sudden victory; however, he lost steam and lost his final three matches to finish in sixth place.

Copeland went 4-2 to finish fourth. Three of his four wins were decisions and he also pinned Western State’s Eric Bach.

Hircock pinned Kale Hintz of Concordia University, Seward, and Augustine DeSantis of Colorado State University-Pueblo.

Taylor also won two of his matches by fall, and finished the tournament 4-2.

Stodola is undefeated this season with a record of 10-0 following his winning of the 133 pound Elite Division at the University of NebraskaKearney Holiday Inn Open, Nov. 23.

He won all three matches in the Elite Division by decisions.

15 football players named for post season honors Jordyn Hulinsky Sports Editor Twelve players from Chadron State’s football team were named for the 2013 RMAC All-Conference football teams.

Three were named for the first team: tailback, Glen Clinton; wide receiver, Nathan Ross; and center Sam Parker.

Clinton, senior of Cody, Wyo., led the team this year in rushing yards with 1,518 yards. He posted 13 rushing TD’s and one receiving TD. He caught 43 passes for 405 yards. Clinton is a four-time all-conference choice and has been named one of the nine finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy this year. He is the second leading rusher for Chadron State with a career total of 4,656 yards. He is ranked 10th nationally in rushing yards and in rushing yards per game. He is ranked 14th in the nation in all-purpose yardage.

Ross, senior of San Diego, rushed for 598 on 43 carries for six touchdowns. He also caught 27 passes for 539 yards. He became CSC’s all-time leader in touchdown receptions with 23.

Parker, junior of Harrison, helped on the offensive line.

The four players who were selected for the second team include Jonn McLain, Cody Roes, Jake McCrary, and Shea Koch.

Quarterback, McLain, junior of Chadron, completed 258 of 394 passes this season for 2,615 yards and 23 touchdowns. He also rushed 38 times for 41 yards and one 30-yard touchdown.

Inside receiver, Roes, senior of Chadron, caught a team-high 54 passes for 576 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Left tackle, McCrary, senior of Valentine, started in all 11 games this season.

Inside linebacker, Koch, senior of Custer, S.D., posted 127 tackles this season: 52 solo and 75 assisted. He also helped on two quarterback sacks and six tackles for loss.

The third team will include Chapman Ham, Mike Lorenzo, Dylan Furrier, Lane Haller and Trelan Taylor.

Inside receiver, Ham, senior of Rapid City, S.D., caught 51 passes for 361 yards and three touchdowns.

Left guard, Lorenzo, junior of Oak Park, Calif., started for 23 straight games.

Linebacker, Furrier, sophomore of Tucson, tallied 75 tackles this year including 3.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss. He marked 31 solo tackles and 44 assisted tackles.

Cornerback, Haller, junior of Gordon, marked 74 tackles which included 40 solo, 34 assisted, and 1.5 tackles for loss. He also intercepted two passes for 79 yards.

Safety, Taylor, senior of Spring Valley, Calif., only played in five games this season because of a six-game suspension at the beginning of the season because of a credit shortage committed in 2011, but posted 41 tackles: 28 solo, 13 assisted, and one for a loss. He also intercepted two passes for 39 yards.

Ryan Wood was named as the RMAC Freshman Co-Defensive Player of the Year and shares the honor with a Colorado Mesa University’s defensive end William Milo, freshman of San Deigo.

Defensive back, Wood, freshman of Stockton, Calif., counted 53 tackles: 36 solo, 17 assisted, and four for loss. He also intercepted three passes.

Four Eagles were also named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division II Team.

This is the first time in school history that four CSC players have been selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

The two player selected for the first team include Clinton, who was also named to the Academic All-American team in 2012, and safety, Pierre Etchemendy, senior of Douglas, Wyo., who posted 61 tackles this season including four for loss, and one interception.

The second team selection include Parker and defensive end, Zach Sandstrom, junior of Chadron, who tallied 42 tackles for three for loss and one sack.

Track season starts Saturday The men and women’s track teams start off their indoor seasons Saturday at the Yellow Jacket Holiday Open, Spearfish, S.D. The meet is hosted by Black Hills State.

Women’s basketball travel to Colorado this weekend Mouhamed Diop Reporter CSC women’s basketball team will travel to Grand Junction, Colo., for the RMAC conference play opening against Colorado Mesa University at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

The Eagles are 0-4 so far. They are scoring 55 points average while allowing 68 points per game on average.

There are three players who are tallying double figures. Forward, Kayli Rageth, senior of Kimball; guard, Kattie Ranta, senior of Rapid City, S.D.; and guard, Dallas Shaw, junior of Buffalo, Wyo.; are averaging 16 points, 12 points, and 10 points per game, respectively. Ranta is also grabbing 10 rebounds per game.

The CMU Mavericks are 4-0 so far this season, but they have lost an exhibition game against Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, a Division I school.

At 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, the Eagles will play the Mountaineers of Western State Colorado University in Gunnison.

Western State is 0-4. The Mountaineers are averaging 53.3 points per game and giving up 79 points per game in the preseason.

Men’s basketball loses first game of the season against UNK Ashley Swanson News Editor CSC’s men’s basketball team lost their first game of the season against the University of Nebraska-Kearney on UNK soil, Nov. 24, 88-60.

“We had an off game; seemed like nothing went right,” Grant Stone, senior of Canton, Mich., said. “We basically just got out played.”

Stone posted 10 points and five total rebounds against the Lopers.

In the first half, forward Zac Bargen, senior of Chadron, made his first free throws adding the first two points of the game. He made eight of eight free throws that night. He also put up 19 total points for the team.

Bargen is currently leading the team in scoring with 57 points this season.

Moments later, UNK came back with a layup, tying the score within the first three minutes of the game.

Forward Kendrick Holliman, junior of Spanish Fort, Ala., helped add to the scoreboard with three free throws, alongside Bargen who made four free throws— all in the first half. Holliman made five of his eight free throws against UNK. Although CSC took the lead for a short time, UNK quickly caught up, bypassing the Eagles and taking the

lead, ending the first half 45-20.

“I think we need to get more comfortable with our offense as a team. We are a relatively new group of players so it will take some time to completely come together as a team,” Justyn Anderson, sophomore of Las Vegas, said. “As the season goes on, we will need to trust each other as well as coaches offense and move the ball and pass up good shots for great shots. We need to get a more consistent performance on the defensive end.

Once we start to figure these things out I believe we can do something special.”

Within the first five minutes of the second half, UNK put themselves a good stretch ahead of CSC with 50-29 lead.

Point guard, Anderson, made three of five 2-pointers, adding to the forty percent of 2-pointers made in the second half.

Overall, CSC made an average of 27.59 percent of 2-pointers; 26.66 percent of 3-pointers; and 65.26 percent of free throws.

The Eagle’s also played against Hastings College, Nov. 30, at Hastings in an exhibition game and lost 7661.

The Eagle’s led early in the game; however, Hastings passed CSC by halftime with a 37-27 lead.

The Eagles will face off against Colorado Mesa University, 7:30 p.m., Dec. 6, Grand Junction.

This speed bump combined with a growing fear of leaving home kept Tajkov from committing to pursue her dream.

Tajkov’s mother confronted her, “There is no trying.”

If Tajkov wanted to do this, she would have to throw herself whole-heartedly into pursuing college basketball. Too much money and time commitment was involved.

Tajkov healed from the injury and dove into the arduous process of passing entrance exams, completing paperwork, sending transcripts and game film to the states.

After receiving calls and emails from over 30 colleges and universities, she got a call from a coach at the University of Mobile, a private Baptist university in Mobile, Ala. He offered her a tempting full ride regardless of Photo by Emma Stockley her test scores.

Serbia, has come a long way to pursue a dream—basketball. Her journey has opened her to experiences that transformed her.

Life in southern Europe was a challenge.

Born in 1991, Tajkov grew up in a time so riddled with political and economic strife that Serbia’s economy was halved leaving the national currency of little value. She was blessed with a decent lifestyle though. She never lacked thanks to a supportive close-knit family made up of her father, mother and now 18-year-old brother.

Her mother pushed her to learn English at an early age creating new possibilities for Tajkov’s education. She received a grueling education. High school encompassed an astounding 15 courses per semester; nearly double the requirements of a school in the states.

The odds weren’t in her favor to succeed in basketball. She had to rely on club sports to pursue basketball. At the age of seven, Tajkov finally got an opportunity to join a club basketball team after a two-year stint in ballet.

She dropped ballet entirely and began to master the game.

Mixed emotions flooded Tajkov’s mind on her last day of school in the spring of 2010.

She was notified that she passed the exams and was eligible to attend college in America.

Part of her had wanted to fail for fear of leaving her homeland. The other part of her wanted to succeed to represent her town well. In a matter of months, Tajkov had transformed from an unknown ball player to a highly recruited athlete. Friends and family sent encouragement. Now eligible to attend a college in the U.S., she solidified her decision, with more of mother’s prodding, to attend the University of Mobile. Tajkov felt pressure to succeed in America, but the entire time she was also in a sort of limbo about leaving.

“I wasn’t thinking about how moving to another country would affect me,” Tajkov said.

Student directed project comes to CSC For several weeks now, Children’s Theatre Workshop has been traveling to nearby schools to perform their production “World by the Tale.”

The 12 theatre students who participated in the class were given the opportunity to adapt their own children’s story for the stage. Each student adapted and directed their own short play. Along with this, the students participated in at least one of the short plays.

The group has traveled to surrounding schools. Their final performance is 1:30 p.m. today, for Chadron elementary students.

For those of you that don’t know, the a cappella group Pentatonix released a new album a while back or something. Whatever.

I honestly don’t like them enough to review it, and I’ve been told that if you don’t care about something, you should probably just ignore it.

But I don’t have a choice. Their videos infest my news feed and the other editors in the newsroom have been playing their songs on loop.

I haven’t been able to put my finger on it, but something about Pentatonix hits a sore nerve. Since I’m a very opinionated young man, I’ve had to keep my criticism quiet; I don’t need to create a hostile work environment.

But I can’t keep silent when, with all the good and original music that’s out there, people choose to lend their ears to useless crapcovered covers. In my smug media opinion: Pentatonix is little more than diligently unimaginative pop garbage.

If you hate Pentatonix as much as I do, you’re probably nodding to yourself in silent agreement. However, if you’re a vehement Pentatonix fan, you’re probably pouting.

“But they’re so talented!” I’ve heard people try to argue.

Well isn’t that neat! I suppose I should just shut up and laud them on that merit. But… I won’t.

Honestly, what does their talent have to do with anything? I understand that the five members of the group are blessed with won-

derful voices. They’ve devoted time and discipline to sculpt their instruments to create really beautiful noise. I can respect that, because I certainly don’t have an ounce of that dedication or talent.

But what are they doing with all that talent?

They’re pissing it away in “edgy” Youtube cover videos. That’s it.

Maybe I’ve lost the plot. Maybe that’s the true benchmark of a “ground breaking recording artist” these days; slapping in some colored contact lenses and shooting a Daft Punk cover medley. It’s genius, man. Pure.

Unbridled. Genius.

I guess I should be beside myself in awe, admiring the creative passion that must’ve taken. Surely Pentatonix will live on in the annals of music history forever. I would like to pause and personally thank them for their continued selfless contributions to the betterment of the human condition.

And let me push this fan-base hatred to even further levels of absurdity. I propose that we should set aside a national Pentatonix Day, where we can all take time off from work to honor everything they’ve done to keep America free.

Or better yet, we can devote a day of the week so that we may go and worship at the font of our talented musical saviors, from which all creative holiness flows.

My favorite author, Steve Aylett, has said that originality is an itch that you have to evolve to scratch. Despite their remarkable talent and gimmicky videos, there’s nothing original about Pentatonix.

Face the music: their only claim to fame is that they can cover songs very well. Outside of that, they suck.

Winter woes will give way to Holiday cheer Justy Bullington Columnist

'Tis the season to be…….coughing? Those may not be the correct lyrics, but unfortunately it is the undeniable truth. This week I not only found myself lying on the sidewalk after an embarrassing fall, but I also found myself a little under the weather.

That’s when I decided one underlying rule: fashion (and self-hygiene), does not exist when all your words end in “guhh.” You can deny it, yes. You can fight it, yes.

But there’s no lying that at one point in time you’ve found yourself in a pile of tissues and in a bath towel you’ve lived in for the past three days.

It’s not just the pile of tissues that questions your level, or lack there of, hygiene. It is also the fact that your leg hairs could be donated to Locks of Love and let’s just say you won’t be wearing a tank top any time soon. Actually, showering in general has become sparse. Unless you’re using the steam as a decongestant – in that case a chore that already took too long has now turned into you taking breaks during your make-shift sauna (and by breaks I am referring to leaning against the wall in your shower and/or sitting down, depending of course on the seriousness of the sinus issue).

After you finally muster up the motivation to get out of the shower you may or may not have the strength to do your normal after shower activities, i.e. put clothes on, brush your hair, lotion, face cream, moving…ya know, the basics. So now your rat-nest-haired, scale-

skinned, towel-wearing self looks far from fabulous.

Even simple tasks turn into a hassle. You know you’re sick when brushing your teeth turns into you holding a toothbrush with toothpaste on it in your mouth while you sit on the ground next to your bathtub on the phone with your mom while you use the other end of your toothbrush to stir your EmergenC……

Oh. That’s never happened to anyone else? Yeah, me either….my, uh, friend told me she did that once. Weird.

Let’s move on, shall we?

We sacrifice fashion the most during cold and flu season. During no other time would it be acceptable to wear the same sweatpants for four days straight without even a consideration of changing. Also, there’s just something repulsive about wearing a bra when you haven’t actually tasted your food in weeks. This is the time where people find it acceptable to tell you how terrible you look without you being able to get defensive. 'Tis the season for “are you feeling okay? You look terrible.” (angry face) Reply: “I know, I’m sick-guhh.”

Being under the weather is far from a boost to your fashion ego. However, the upside to being sick is you feel truly blessed for all the people around you that care about you. All the soup offers, the texts, the windshield scrapings, the “here, let’s throw away the tissues, they’re starting to cover your bed.” Also, this is the very rare time when you actually finish a tube of chapstick before you lose it. If that’s not winning, I don’t know what is. Before you know it you’ll be decking the halls with Christmas spirit instead of tissues.

Senior artists alter worlds Hannah Clark Reporter “Dinner Ware,”

Today and tomorrow are the last days to see “The Altered World,” Patrick Mooney and Conor McGhehey’s senior art thesis show. The duo’s science-fiction inspired show is hanging in the main gallery of Memorial Hall, and it packs stained glass, spiders, and self-reflection into one smorgasbord show.

McGhehey is new to the art field, since the senior changed his direction during college. Originally a physical education major, McGhehey played a fated game of pool with his cousin, Matt Rodell. The results of that discussion left McGhehey examining his unsatisfied feelings toward his major, and it pushed him towards the arts. McGhehey synthesized his love of science-fiction and the internet to produce some diverse work. “Through the Forest,” a set of three alcohol and ink pictures, is reminiscent of vibrant Rorschach ink blots. The fluid shapes conform just enough to be outlined with pen, but retain their free, naturalistic interpretation. His intergalactic pièce de résistance features a lounging woman framed by a startling celestial backdrop. Entitled, “Two Beauties,” this acrylic highlights McGhehey’s compositional talent and eye for color.

His other pieces reveal a different artistic side to McGhehey, where dark subject matter battles with convoluted design. His ink prints, like “Fox and the Crow,” mix an aboriginal taste for pattern with grim shapes to create an edgy design.

Mooney also showed ink prints, one black and white called “Destiny” and a colorful, industrial piece called “The Dream,” and these exemplify Mooney’s penchant for intertwining Celtic knots. This flair gives his work an ancient feel, and they become especially decorative on the low mosaic table he is displaying.

The most interesting aspect of “The Altered World” show, however, isn’t hanging on its walls, but from its ceiling. Five stained glass pieces, ranging from iPad to television-sized, are suspended from the black above. To appreciate the pieces’ full chromatic effects, viewers must walk to the gallery’s rear and see the light from the door shine through their colored panes. Mooney’s large “Trinity” features symbology from the wildly popular fantasy Zelda game series, while McGhehey’s glass shows a futuristic, yet vaguely 1950s ray gun. This piece creates juxtaposition between the refined medium of stained glass, once reserved for cathedral windows, and science-fiction, once frowned upon in academic circles.

This novel subject matter refreshes the college-age gallery-goer, almost as much as Mooney’s delicate symmetry. His stained glass pieces, the triforce piece and another called “Winterveil in Orgrimmar,” both reference fantasy fields, the latter being a World of Warcraft nod. Although they break from traditional stained glass subject matter, like religious iconography, Mooney remains true to the symmetrical art of stained glass. That mentality, the combination of old formats with new subject matter, is at the bionic heart of McGhehey and Mooney’s show. The pair have studied mediums old and new, from computer design to carving wooden blocks, and now they must look to the future.

Tomorrow, Dec. 6, the show closes, and the pair must prepare to leave CSC behind them. Their minds full of ideas and portfolios full of work, the two are going out to alter worlds of their own.
