Sans clear purpose, diversity committee seeks face-lift After public meeting, group to suggest more student leadership u By Brandon Davenport Editor

It might have been chaotic at times, but Thursday’s meeting of Chadron State’s Diversi-

ty Committee marked a new beginning for the group - exactly what its members were seeking when it invited the public to attend its monthly gathering.

Current committee co-chair Bruce Hoem, who has been with the group for 15 years, said it hasn’t changed much since he first joined.

Late last year, it was decided the committee needed new life.

“We weren’t clear anymore what our purpose was,” Hoem said.

At their November meeting,the committee decided they’d invite the public to their

next meeting to start a conversation about the group’s direction.

Hoem said he felt the committee wasn’t getting enough input from students.

“That was what was lacking,” he said. “How do we communicate with students? We would have an idea of what we wanted to do, but we weren’t asking the students what they wanted to do.”

Senate discusses new student activity fees u By Aubrie Lawrence News Editor

An increase in the amount of student activity fees was once again a topic of discussion during Monday night’s meeting of the student senate.

“This is one of the things that is at the top of our lists because it is a pretty high-impact thing to all of our students in terms of paying for education,” said Senate Vice President Konery Klueber.

Currently, senate makes $369,927.48 from student activity fees. This money is used to fund student events clubs put on during the semester. Right now, fees are set at $6.54 per credit hour and students do not pay fees on credits in excess of 12 credit hours. Nor do they pay fees for online classes.

You@CSC to make enrollment push u By Aubrie Lawrence News Editor In an effort to increase publicity and campus involvement, You@CSC introduced a new initiative at the CAB meeting Monday night to discuss new monthly topics concerning health that will help student adjust to living on a college campus.

Each month will have a specific topic that will help students become more educated on living a healthy life in college and beyond.

January was centered around goal setting and intentions. This week students had the opportunity to post a note saying a goal or intention they wanted to accomplish this year in the Student Center near the senate office.

The topic for February is Sexual Health awareness. Different events over the course of the month will relate to the topic.

In March, events surrounding the topic of diet and nutrition will be available for students.

These monthly topics are part of a push to get more people active in participating on the You@CSC website and social media page.

Student Activities Coordinator Megan Northrup is also looking to increase the

connection students have with the college and make them feel more comfortable with doing the uncomfortable and have a desire to want to enroll at CSC. “We’re really trying to connect with that Gen-Z and do more social media posts, take them on virtual tours of what it’s like to go into the nursing office, what it’s like to go to Western Community Health, what it’s like to go into the Start Office, all of these different things so it’s not as intimidating when they actually have to go,” Northrup said.

Each student that answers the survey will be entered in a raffle and has the chance to win a Nintendo Switch. > RLA is hosting I Hate Winter weekend starting tomorrow with events such as pet therapy at 3 p.m. on Friday in the Student Center, beach games in the Hub on Friday at 9.m., and a silent disco on Saturday at 9 p.m. in the Hub. > CAB has $68,175.66 remaining in unallocated budget.

The increase would make it easier for AFB to predict yearly income according to enrollment and would make a fair system for students. Senate also recognized that some majors would have to pay more fees than other due to the ratio of online to in-person classes.

Senate currently has no firm plans to make the increase but continues to explore the idea. Vice President Klueber urged senators to take the discussion to their constituents and return with feedback.

Another issue that was brought up for discussion was the price of hybrid classes.

About 26 people attended the meeting in the Student Center’s Ponderosa Room, many of whom had no affiliation with the committee. Diversity Committee Co-Chair Kevin Coy Jr., graduate student of Davenport, Florida, said he was surprised at the number of students who attended.

As intended, the students were a large part of the conversation regarding the committee’s new direction.

“Getting students in to start the conversation was perfect, because that’s what (Hoem) has been trying to do for a while,” Isioma Akwanamnye, a junior of Nigeria, and student member of the committee said.

In November, the committee also decided it would invite CSC President Randy Rhine to its February meeting in order to make recommendations for changes that would give the group a new di-

Though the meeting’s flurry of ideas may not have succeeded in completely addressing all of the committee’s needs, Coy found the discussion useful in determining what some of the group’s next steps will be.

“I think the meeting went great in terms of finding a direction and laying the foundation of the diversity committee,” he said.

“I was excited about all of the new ideas that came about. Now It’s time to take those ideas and move forward.

Watch party set for Thursday u From CSC College Relations Chadron State College Professor Kim Madsen will host a watch party Thursday featuring the release of the Nebraska Early Childhood Workforce Commission’s report, “Elevating Nebraska’s Early Childhood Workforce: Report and Recommendations of the Nebraska Early Childhood Workforce Commission.” The watch party will be from 8 to 10 a.m. in the Burkhiser Complex Room 210. The event is free and open to the public.

The Nebraska Early Childhood Workforce Commission is a group of more than 40 public and private sector leaders convened by the Buffett Early Childhood Institute at the University of Nebraska to develop a comprehensive plan for strengthening and expanding the state’s early childhood workforce. The commission’s goal is to ensure that a skilled, informed, and diverse workforce is available to meet the needs of all Nebraska children from birth through age 8.

Madsen, who served on the commission for three years, said the report is a testament to the dedication

many individuals and groups have for supporting the workforce for generations to come.

“The content of the report represents many, many years of intense gathering of evidence based practices by many individuals who care for and about investing in children and families in the state of Nebraska.

The information spans the entire state, representing a collaborative commitment to ensure high-quality care and education for young children is considered critical and vital to the future of our state and the nation,” Madsen said.

Jim Powell, Vice President for Academic Affairs, said the commission has an important focus, ensuring Nebraska’s children have the best educational opportunities possible.

“Almost everyone agrees on the importance of meeting the needs of families in Nebraska for excellent daycare and preschool facilities. The watch party on campus Thursday is an opportunity to learn what the commission found and what they are recommending to meet those needs,” Powell said.

The commission’s report contains a wide range of findings about the state of the early childhood work-

force in Nebraska, including inconsistent regulations, low wages for early childhood professionals providing care and teaching near or below the poverty line, high turnover, accessibility and availability to childcare, shortage of affordable options, economic vitality of communities and employers affected by childcare needs of working parents.

The commission’s vision that Nebraskans elevate the early childhood workforce to a priority profession benefitting all children from birth through third grade centers on four goals: One, Nebraska’s early childhood workforce will be highly qualified and will reflect the diversity of the children and families they serve; two, Early care and education in Nebraska will be fully funded by 2030; three, Nebraskans will champion high-quality early care and education and the critical role of the workforce in young children’s learning and development; and four, Nebraskans will implement the commission’s recommendations to achieve a highly qualified and diverse workforce on behalf of all young children and their families.

Media must stick to our ethical standards

S

unday, we all got a lesson in ethics.

TMZ was first to report that NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and seven others had died that morning as a result of a helicopter crash near Calabasas, California, but their handling of the story was unacceptable.

Unfortunately, news outlets have to acknowledge the business side of our industry. It’s not something we reporters particularly like to think about, but there’s truth that being the first to report breaking news is profitable. It’s human nature that readers are somewhat inpatient when it comes to consuming new information, and their attention usually goes to whoever got the scoop first, regardless of the accuracy of the report.

TMZ’s report Sunday morning was accurate, but we at The Eagle disagree with how the story was handled not just by TMZ, but by other outlets such as ABC who were irresponsible in their reporting.

At The Eagle, we’re taught to follow the Society for Professional Journalists’ four ethical

As They See It On the Bright Side

Comparing can create mental illness u By Rachel Mitchell Columnist

After writing my column last week, I really got to thinking about how much social media, magazines and film effect our lives.

We always make references and comparisons when it comes to the way we live. Whether it’s someone else making the comparison, or we’re scrolling through Instagram and making a judgement ourselves, its extremely present in our lives.

With this constant comparison, there will always be negative judgements and thoughts.

I think far too often we undermine the power of these neg-

ative thoughts. They can be a powerful presence in the dark corners of our mind.

I did research and according to the International OCD Foundation, one in 50 people have Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), which is a mental health disorder causing one to constantly think about perceived defects or flaws in their appearance — a flaw that appears mi- Rachel Mitchell er like Cosmopolitan. Not only is BDD a big issue, but so is anorexia. The idea of having to physically look a certain way is destroying an entire generation. Athletes struggle from this as well; about 33% of male athletes are affected. Female athletes who participate in sports dealing with aesthetics and weight classes experience

With all that said, be kind to yourself. Do what you need to keep a positive mindset and know the worst thing in the world is not your weight. There is professional help, like counselors if you need help. Talk to your friends or someone you trust. For those of you who may not suffer, be nice to others. Don’t be rude or comment mean things on social media. Be an adult. Be a nice adult.

Yet another weekend passed and I haven’t finished updating my resume.

The information is there, but it lacks style. One of my professors noted that an employer spends only a few seconds sorting through resumes.

Your resume isn’t the only one an employer sees, they sort through hundreds of them.

Your resume will only get a proper read-through if it gets past the first or second round of elimination. Without clarity and style, it will never get that far.

Bullet your summary of qualifications. If the job you’re applying for gives you a list of required or preferred skills, pick out the ones you fulfill and put them at the top of your resume under the heading “Summary of qualifications”.

This way the person viewing resumes can see you are qualified for the position.

Check grammer and spelling. You can never over-proof your resume. Make your friends read your resume, take it into the writing center, ask all you professors to read it. Get as many eyes as possible checking

for spelling and grammar issues. Your word processor can still make mistakes and miss incorrect spelling, don’t let it fail on your resume.

Do not over-apply. It can be easy to think that you should just apply for everything that you remotely qualify for, but this isn’t always true. Applying takes time and energy, two things which are high in demand. It is better to put all your effort into one great aplication than to submit many subpar applications. Be selective in your aplications and really show off for that one perfect job. Again, best of luck in your job searching!

College students participated in community service for the Catholic church by assisting their rummage sale for Service Saturday.

Saturday, Jan. 27, Mariah Nelson, Assistant Director of High Rise, hosted a volunteering event at St Patrick’s Catholic Church, giving students the opportunity to help the church run their rummage sale, and help out the community.

“The reason is for people who enjoy going out and serving and helping the community. It gives people that opportunity,” Nelson said.

The rummage sale started at 8:30 a.m. and lasted until 1 p.m., earning help from a couple college students who were wanting to help the community. They helped with organizing items as people slowly purchased “For now, it’s once a month until everything is completely planned out,” Nelson said, “See where they want us,

see where they need us.”

The Catholic Church will continue having rummage sales every week on Saturday, at the same time, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. All workers participating outside of the college are volunteers, and they are all members of the church.

fter months of waiting and anticipation, it was finally time for The Eli Young Band to make their way onto the NPAC stage and give CSC the concert they have been waiting to see.

“Things have been falling into place so perfectly,” Senate Vice President Konery Klueber said. “You set it up once, ready to go, and then have to do it again you kind of have everything in your mind about how you want to execute, and things have gone really well. We’ve had student help come in and set up the stage, bring the band in and now we just have to have people come through and have a good time.”

The $90,000 concert, which was originally set for Oct. 10, 2019, was canceled last minute due to bad weather, causing a large conversation among students and staff on when the concert would be rescheduled.

Drone Discussions: Should Rangeland program include drone classes?

There is a list of new and innovating practices and tools that the agriculture and rangeland societies have been burrowing their roots deeper into and on that list sits drones and what they can do to better farm and/ or ranch practices.

Chadron State College’s faculty and staff are among those who are interested in the topic and are ironing out the details of turning the debate into a class. Roughly 15 colleges across the nation teach a drone operation and management class and 25 even developed the class into a degree.

“I can tell you that a course on the use of drones is under development,” CSC President Randy Rhine said.

CSC Vice President James Powell also said, “We have been discussing a number of options around drones.”

In the United States the first unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to take photography for aerial surveillance was the military’s Radioplane in 1955, according to Rango et al., in their Journal of Applied Remote Sensing article published in Aug. of 2009. Since then, UAV technology has advanced tremendously in most industries. Today that technology has branched into agriculture where there are numerous uses for drones

Drones are becoming popular in many industries, including farming, ranching and rangeland management. from aerial photos and spraying crop fields to herding cattle and reading their radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags for tracking purposes and more.

Drones might be able to herd your cattle and spray sections of your fields, but speaking imagery, the debate is on whether or not to invest in them, or use traditional methods through satellites that offer similar resolution.

Being closer to the ground than satellites, drones can shoot high resolution photos at 1-6 cm resolution and can do it in hard-to-reach places that satellites can’t reach.

Purchasing a drone will also be beneficial in the long run considering satellites and their yearly payments.

However, satellites can offer down to a 25 cm resolution image. Looking at the big picture, do we need resolution that precise? This seems to be the question between some of CSC’s rangeland professors.

Agriculture and Rangeland Management Associate Professor Anthony Perlinski said, “For broad-scale stuff, satellites can do everything a drone can do. It’s just a matter of if you want to fly a drone or if you want to pay to get the satellite imagery.”

On the same side of the fence,

Agriculture and Rangeland Management Adjunct Faculty/Emeritus Faculty Professor James O’Rourke said, “Drones are another one of those things, to me, that distracts us from what the real issue is. We get so enamored by new developments, new technology and new electronic gadgetry. It bothers me that we get sidetracked from the real issue of managing the biology and the ecology of rangelands.”

Though Perlinski and O’Rourke share similar thoughts on how drones are a distraction and the same objective could be achieved with satellite imagery, they do share the same ideas on how a drone operation and management class will be beneficial.

“I certainly think it should be part of a class. Kids are going to have to know that stuff, I mean it’s going to be a tool one of these days. So, people need to know the cost and how to operate them. What they can do, what can’t they do,” O’Rourke said.

Perlinski also said there’s definitely an interest from the student body and there’s definitely an interest from the general public.

Taryn Foxen tied her career-high with 33 points against UCCS, Friday, as Chadron State College defeated the mountain lions 78-74.

“I had absolutely no idea I scored 33,” Taryn Foxen, junior of Aurora, Colorado, said. “I don’t always pay attention to stuff like that, but I knew I was scoring a lot. Coach Raymer took me out of the locker room, and I went on my first-ever interview with Dave Collins and he was the one who told me I had 33.”

The Mountain Lions led CSC 17-2 midway through the first quarter, but the Eagles caught up by the second quarter, “The start of the game was really tough, we didn’t come out very strong, they were knocking down a bunch of shots and we were struggling to score.” Foxen said. With the game tied at 25, both teams exchanged leads until the Eagles established a 10-point advantage with nearly three minutes left in the third quarter. In the game’s final seconds, Jori Peters, sophomore of Mitchell, made two free throws as the Eagles preserved the

victory. “The whole game was just trading baskets, there was never one time that we stopped fighting and I think it was a huge game for us, like we deserved to win that game.” Foxen said.

CSC was unable to sustain its momentum in Saturday’s game against Colorado School of Mines, losing 93-48 to the Orediggers. Colorado Mines shot 33 of 64 from the field compared to CSC’s 16 of 54. Junior Liz Holter, of Gilbert, Arizona, led the Mines with 26 points while three other Orediggers scored double-digit points. Foxen led the Eagles with 22 points and two steals.

“We got on our heels and were a little bit insecure with our abilities on offense,” Head Women’s Basketball Coach Janet Raymer said, “We weren’t running something that gives us reversals and good looks at the basket and we were taking poor shots as a result of it.”

The Eagles host the 8-5 Black Hills State Yellow Jackets, Friday and the 6-7 South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers, Saturday.

Averaging 68 points-per-game, the Hardrockers own the second-best scoring offense in the RMAC while Black Hills ranks sixth, averaging 66 points-per-game.

Roden posts career-bests u By CSC Sports Information Led by sophomore Brodie Roden’s victories in both the 200 and 400-meter dashes, the Chadron State College track and field entries had another strong showing Saturday at the Dave Little Alumni Mile Meet hosted by Black Hills State University in Spearfish.

Athletes from six schools entered the competition.

Roden’s times of 22.53 seconds in the 200 and 49.82 in the 400 were both indoor career bests.

Eagles’ senior Javan Lanier also won the 60-meter dash in 6.98 seconds, barely a tenth off of the NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Oth-

Witnessing Kobe Bryant constantly dominate and take over games gave everyone, young or old, athletic or not, a legend to model themselves after on and off the court.

The news of Kobe and Gianna Bryant’s deaths broke the hearts of people around the world, not just those involved in basketball. Instead of only players and coaches recalling the legend’s performance on the court, Bryant’s role as a father and his work ethic are the pinnacle of every mournful conversation.

It’s easy to remember his dominance on the court, but Kobe instilled a mindset across the nation, the “Mamba Mentality”, a trait few players in any sport have. Kobe only worked harder, he never asked for superstars to join the Los Angeles Lakers. Kobe only took contested three-pointers with the game on the line, he never passed the ball under pressure. And after his career, Kobe only used the spotlight to speak about Gianna’s Devin Fulton future, not his current situation.

Kobe and his wife Vanessa went through struggles after Kobe admitted to committing adultery with a hotel employee in 2003, but he and Vanessa kept a strong marriage. ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne documented in 2013 how Kobe taught himself Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” to play on piano in honor of Vanessa. His passion caught the eyes of everyone, not just those who watch sports.

“What I’ve noticed on social media or even the media is the recognition Kobe is getting from the non-athletic world. There are people who don’t know anything about Kobe getting drafted, they couldn’t tell you what number he wore, they couldn’t talk about his 63-point game, but there are housewives that know who Kobe Bryant is. He’s touching a whole other non-basketball world and I think that shows true

Normally, we remember the athlete and not the person, but this wasn’t the case on Sunday. Never have I witnessed six teams unaffiliated with a former player honor them the way the Celtics, Pelicans, Wizards, Hawks, Raptors and Spurs pay tribute to Bryant with in-game clock violations tailored to Kobe’s number (24 and eight). Brooklyn Nets’ Kyrie Irving left the team’s stadium after hearing the news and didn’t play in Sunday’s game and multiple players across the league called for those games to be rescheduled.

With his heartbreaking exit from life, Bryant showed his greatness in his final moments on, and off the court as well. At age 37, “The Mamba” scored 60 points in his final NBA game against the Utah Jazz and congratulated Lebron James breaking his career-points record the night before his tragic death.

His play is indescribable, but the next-closest adjective I’d use to sum up Kobe’s career is “Fearless”.

In the twilight of his career, Bryant played through multiple leg injuries with the most memorable being his two free throws after tearing his ACL against the Golden State Warriors in 2013. He never backed away from any moment or felt he needed extra support to accomplish success because Kobe worked harder than anyone on the court.

Kobe’s death reminds us how fragile life is, but also how great it can be with the right values and work-ethic. The Mamba was willing to work harder than anyone in the room. His death is heartbreaking, but it’s also a wakeup call for us to embrace every moment and work hard.

If Kobe can ball out of control with injured legs, we can improve in our daily lives. If Kobe and Vanessa can improve their marriage after hardships, we can work on our own relationships. Above all, if Kobe can impact and inspire those around him, why can’t we do the same?

Growing up as a basketball player, Foxen said she and her dad bonded over discussing the best players in the game.

“We sat and talked about it and it turned into a conversation about having to live every day like it’s your last, because you really don’t know.”

Bryant was an inspiration to many during his career – one of the greatest in NBA history. During his 20-years in the league he won championships in 2000, 2001 and 2002; and again in 2009 and 2010. He retired the third highest scoring player in NBA history, though LeBron James passed him for the position just a day before his death.

Bryant’s final tweet congratulated James’ accomplishment.

Both Jackson and teammate Michael Sparks credit Bryant with inspiring them.

“Kobe Bryant is the reason I play basketball now,” Jackson said. “When I started playing basketball I was about four-yearsold. I used to ball up my little sock, make it a basketball and use the top of the door as a hoop.”

When he started playing competitive basketball, Jackson wore Bryant’s number eight until he was in high school. He said Bryant had a positive impact on his life, not just as a basketball player, but as a person.

“He made me a better man,” Jackson said.

“He taught me to live life to the fullest and do everything you can at your best.”

Sparks said Bryant inspired him to work harder.

“He’s the reason I started working out so early and so late throughout my life,” he said.

“He’s engrained that in me: if you want to be great you have to work at it. Work harder than everyone else.”

“He was a great father, obviously,” Sparks said. “Everything he did was excellent. That’s something engrained in me since I was a kid.”

Foxen didn’t grow up a fan of Bryant. As a Denver Nuggets fan, she, like others, disliked Bryant the way many fans dislike star athletes who don’t play for their favorite team.

“I looked up to him, of course, because he was one of the greats,” she said. “He was so good, but there was something about him that bothered me.”

Over the past few days, the world has had the chance to look back on the life and career of Kobe Bryant, without the modifier of worrying about what he might have done against your favorite team.

“I’ve gotten to see not only what kind of player he was, but what kind of person he was, and the kind of father he was, that I had never seen before,” Foxen said. “It really hits hard.”

In 2003, Bryant was charged with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old resort employee in Colorado. Charges were eventually dropped at the request of the accuser and Bryant later settled a civil suit with the woman out of court.

Following his retirement from the NBA, Bryant was brought back to the basketball world in part by his daughter Gianna. The two were on their way to Bryant’s Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks, California, where Gianna and her Mamba girls’ basketball teammates were scheduled to play.

Gianna, also known as “Gigi,” followed in her father’s footsteps as a basketball player and aspired to play first for the University of Connecticut and later, the WNBA, according to The Athletic’s Molly Knight.

Gigi was often seen at her father’s side.

Payton Chester and Alyssa Altobelli, two of Gianna’s teammates, also died in the crash along with Payton’s mother Sarah Chester, Alyssa’s father John Altobelli and mother Keri Altobelli. Also killed were pilot Ara Zobayan and Christina Mauser, an assistant coach of the Mamba team.

Wade French went undefeated, pinning two of his three opponents in the first period, and another in the second as Chadron State College went 2-1 at the University of Nebraska-Kearney Midwest Duals, Saturday.

French, a senior of Herriman, Utah, is CSC’s only wrestler ranked in the top-12 of the Div. II Wrestling Coaches Association poll.

“Kearney has always been a great place for me to wrestle as in I’ve always done very well when wrestling there. I went into the weekend feeling very confident and just made it a priority to have fun. I wrestle my best when I don’t have extra stress or worries weighing over me.” French said in a message to The Eagle In Kearney, the Eagles won 25-22 against Fort Hays State University in their second dual of the day and defeated Northwest Kansas Technical College 45-6 in their third dual of the

day. The Eagles only loss was a 30-12 defeat to Newman University.

Five CSC wrestlers went 2-1 in their matches.

Tate Stoddard, freshman of Glenrock, Wyoming, earned pins against Fort Hays State and Northwest Kansas while Mason Watt, redshirt freshman of Broomfield, Colorado, earned pins against Newman University and Northwest Kansas. Brandon Kile, senior of Hastings, won by major decision against Fort Hays and a forfeit against Northwest Kansas while Chase Clasen, senior of Moses Lake, Washington, won by major decision against Fort Hays and decision against Northwest Kansas.

The Eagles travel to Sterling, Colorado, to dual Northeastern Junior College, Saturday, and host Adams State University, Thursday at 6 p.m. for “Senior Night” in the Chicoine Center as Allison, Clasen, French, Kile and Jay Westcott, senior of Grand Junction, Colorado, wrestle for their last time as an Eagle in Chadron.

As of Jan. 22, the Grizzlies have three top-12 ranked wrestlers with 133-pounder Jonathan Andretta, junior of Walsenburg, Colorado, ranking fifth, 141-pounder Noah Hermosillo, sophomore of Gypsum, Colorado and 149-pounder Josiah Rider, freshman of Grand Junction, Colorado, ranking ninth, all according to the NCAA Div. II Wrestling Coaches Association.

Following CSC’s final home dual, the Eagles travel to Golden, Colorado for the “Rocky Mountain Open”, Feb. 9.

“The rest of our season is pretty simple.” French said last week in a message, “We’ve gotten through our really busy stretch of our schedule and are now starting to de-load in order to prepare for Regions. It’s all about guys gaining confidence in this last section of the season and getting ready to give themselves the best opportunity come regions in February.”

The Eagles’ record improved to 6-10 overall after its two victories in Kearney, Saturday.

The Chadron State College Eagles men’s basketball team had a chance to energize their season with a win over fourth-ranked Colorado Mines, but late-game misses led to the Eagles’ sixth consecutive loss.

Saturday, the Eagles looked ready to upset the Orediggers, leading 46-33 at the half. But with 7:24 remaining, Mines caught fire as Chadron fizzled, and a nine-point lead was erased in three minutes. The Eagles never recovered. Colby Jackson, senior of Las Vegas, exited the game with six minutes remaining after suffering a sprained ankle, but returned with 90 seconds left.

Leading the way for Mines, Kobe Betts, junior of Pueblo, Colorado, scored 14 of his career-high 28 points with seven minutes remaining and Brendan Sullivan, sophomore of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, scored 28 points. Junior Michael Glen, of Carbondale, Colorado earned Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors with four blocks and seven rebounds against the Eagles.

“It’s one of those deals where I compliment Colorado Mines more.”

Head Men’s Basketball Coach Houston Reed said. “There’s games you lose and games you get beat, and losing is when you don’t do things the right way and you don’t get the result, getting beat is when the other team outplays their opponent and I feel like Colorado Mines outplayed us in the last five minutes of the game.”

In the first half, CSC shot 19 of 34 from the field with Jacob Jefferson, sophomore of Buckeye, Arizona, leading the way with 16 points. Mines saw only one free throw attempt in the first half despite six personal fouls by CSC.

“I was really proud that we put ourselves in the situation we were in, but Colorado Mines, you got to tip your hat, they made their last 10 shots in a row. Offensively, when you’re playing that well you seem to do everything else a lot better. They really intensified defensively and took some things away from us and we didn’t execute some things offensively or finish some shots that we finished throughout the course of the game.” Reed said.

The Eagles host the 11-2 Black Hill State Yellow Jackets, Friday and the 6-7 South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers, Saturday.

Winning its last 11 games, Black Hills sits at second place in the conference and is led by freshman Joel Scott, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, who ranks fourth in the RMAC with 336 points. CSC brings the RMAC’s fifth-leading scorer in Friday’s matchup with Brian Rodriguez-Flores, senior of Phoenix, scoring 326 points.

The Hardrockers give up 69.8 pointsper-game, ranking them third in the conference while CSC ranks 12th, giving up 79.8 points-per-game.

“With us being down with some injuries right now, we’re going to have to come up with a defensive plan that will work and work this week to get our guys to buy into it and really go and compete and focus on doing the little things well” Reed said.

Against UCCS, the Mountain Lions’ top-ranked defense held the Eagles to 22 points in the paint. CSC shot a season-high 10 of 19 from beyond the arc but were unable to gain momentum as UCCS kept its lead through most of the game, winning 89-78.

The Eagles sit in the 15th spot of the RMAC with a 2-11 record and rank 16th allowing opponents to shoot 37% from beyond the arc. Reed said Jackson is expected to return during the weekend’s games.
