CAB BYLAWS CHANGE AFTER SENATE APPROVES

CSC Theater will perform the play “Extremities” at 7:30 p.m., Thursday-Saturday, and at 2 p.m., Sunday. The play calls into question what is right and what in the world needs to change. Director Scott Cavin will host talk-back sessions following the performances on Thursday-Saturday.

Senate passed the bylaw changes CAB made last week. The changes went into affect Tuesday. Clubs who miss three or four meetings in an academic year will be contacted. If they miss five meetings, the club’s funds will be suspended.

Senate approves 3 student trustee applications Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor Senate approved three student applications for the student trustee position. The names of the students will not be released yet.

Dining Services Director Tracy Shuck answered senators’ questions about a possible F’real machine in the coffee shop.

Shuck said profit sharing is out of the question because all cash revenue goes straight to the school, not to food services.

He said minor renovations would have to be made to the coffee shop. During the renovations, the coffee shop will have to be closed, unless they can schedule the renovations during a school break. Also, to make room for the machine, something in the coffee shop will have to leave and Shuck thinks it will probably be the ice coffee machine.

A question was brought up asking if the money could instead go to getting a full barista-style coffee shop. Shuck said the renovations for that would cost more than a F’real machine. He said, Senate would have to decide where they want to spend the money.

A F’real comes in one size and it would cost between $3.19$3.99.

A committee called the Court Rules Committee was formed to create procedures that the court will use to operate. President Dillon Spies appointed Sofia Trefilova, Kelly McNabb, and Jacob Rissler to the committee. Senators Tileen Sullivan and Katrina Hurley volunteered to sit on the committee.

Grounds supervisor Lucinda Mays is in need of group volunteers to help her with projects around campus. Projects include planting trees and shrubs. There are some big projects for bigger groups and small projects for smaller groups. Mays can be contacted via her cell phone 308-430-4186.

Senate approves ammends to CAB bylaws Jaycie Cheatham Reporter Senate passed the amended CAB bylaws in the Monday meeting, that are now in affect. Any absences prior to this week will not count against members.

Three to four absences during the academic year will result in the clubs’ president and adviser receiving a warning email.

Five absences will result in the suspension of the clubs allocated funds.

CAB treasurer reported $8,408.52 in unallocated funds.

The spring Career Fair is from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Friday.

About 30 businesses and agencies are expected to attend, with the possibility of more. Students should come to learn about potential jobs, internships, and to gain valuable contact information.

Vice Chair of Records Stephanie Steele still needs updated packets, adviser agreements, and constitutions from several clubs. Not updating these files could affect the clubs’ budget hearings.

The deadline to turn in everything is Feb. 24.

There was a great turn out at the free bowling and movie nights last weekend. CAB members discussed a possible free bowling night before every free movie night each semester.

Laure Sinn also brought up the possibility of promoting a theme night for the activities, such as an 80s workout theme.

The CAB members had to implement a new rule stating that if any student left the building they would not be permitted back in, to prevent students from drinking in the parking lots.

Vice Chair of Programming Chelsea Evans reported that students who attended the activities were very polite and cooperative.

In light of the recent tragedies on campus, Dr. Bue wanted to make it known that this is an opportunity for student leaders to focus on issues with substance and significance.

As leaders we should ask ourselves, “What kind of change can we impact on campus as well as within our clubs and organizations,” he said.

Senate passed CAB’s bylaw changes they made at last week’s CAB meeting. The bylaws affect clubs attendance policies.

The changes state that clubs that miss more than three meetings in an academic year will be contacted and eventually funding will be affected.

Clubs that have missed meeting prior to the passing of the bylaws will not be affected.

The free movie night scheduled for March 15 is moved to March 22.

CAB’s Vice Chair of Programming Chelsea Evans asked senators to talk to constituents to see if there is an interest in another free bowling night. The next bowling night is scheduled for May 2.

Adviser Deena Kennell reminded everyone that the career fair is from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Friday in the Student Center. The door prize will be an iPad Air. Senate reported $64,743.25 in unallocated funds.

Theatre program announces auditions for next show The Chadron State College theatre program is announcing auditions for Alfred Hitchcock’s “The 39 Steps” by Patrick Barlow.

The auditions will be Tuesday in the Black Box theatre room 227 in Memorial Hall. Individuals who are auditioning should prepare a two-minute monologue or be prepared to read one provided.

Individuals should sign up for a five-minute time slot on the sheet posted outside the Black Box. Callback auditions will be from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday. It is recommended that individuals auditioning should watch the original movie in order to fully understand the humor of the classic spy thriller.

CSC hosts memorial service Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor The CSC softball team and the athletic department hosted a memorial service for Fatima Larios Tuesday night. The service was open to the public.

Father Timothy Stoner of Chadron’s St. Patrick’s Catholic Church led the service with an opening prayer and some words for the softball team and others in attendance.

Joel Smith Jr., CSC athletic director, then opened the stage for members of the softball team to talk.

Teammates read poems, and talked about Larios’ life as a friend, as a teammate, and as a person who loved life.

A general agreement between all speakers was that Larios was a person who lived life to the fullest. They said she was always the life of the party.

After a handful of softball players spoke, Head Softball Coach Robert Stack eulogized.

Stack and his wife attended the funeral service for Larios on Monday in California.

Stack reflected many of the same statements as the players about Larios.

He then expressed his thanks to everyone who has offered sympathies and condolences to Stack and his team. He said he appreciates everyone who has reached out to him. Every team in the RMAC has contacted Stack to offer sympathies, he said.

When Larios’ father was on campus last week, the softball team presented him with one of Larios’ game jerseys and Stack gave Larios’ mother another jersey Monday at the funeral.

The maroon game jersey and Larios’ glove will travel with the team to all of the games.

A slideshow of pictures from Larios’ hometown of Monterey, California, and of her time here at CSC was shown to end the service.

Larios was found dead in High Rise dormitory Jan. 31. The Chadron Police Department and the County Attorney and Coroner are still investigating her death.

BRIEF Career Fair scheduled for Friday in SC Students are encouraged to participate in the upcoming Career Fair scheduled for Friday.

The fair will be in the Student Center Pit area from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.

There are over 30 businesses and agencies who are interested in hiring CSC students for careers, seasonal positions, and internships. Faculty is also encouraged to swing by and meet the guests.

Credit offered to students who attend Early Childhood Conference CSC will be hosting the 26th annual Excellence in Early Childhood Conference on Feb. 20, and Feb. 21 in the Student Center.

There will be two pre-session options available on Feb. 20. The conference is set to begin at 11 a.m. and lasts until 5:30 p.m.

The second day of the conference will feature Dan St. Romain as the keynote

speaker. The session will begin at 8 a.m. and lasts until 3 p.m.

The conference fee is $40 and refunds will only be given up to 72 hours prior to the conference.

Don’t be a generation-ist Emily Lisko Contributor

In light of recent events, namely the ongoing battle between student politicians and The Eagle, as well as the recent front page debacle in the Rapid City Journal, I would like to thank all the current and former Eagle staff members who have played a roll in The Eagle’s journalistic integrity over the years.

I can’t imagine how hard you all work to bring us what you do every week - award winning photography, relevant news stories, some brilliant investigative journalism, and constant objective exposure of all the outrageous numbnuttery that happens at this fine institution.

Basically, you guys are the epitome of what I, and hopefully many others, think is proper journalism. As well as providing impressive coverage of campus affairs, many of you have graduated and taken your place as important figures in society. Two who reside at the top of my head because they reside closest to home are recently-elected Chadron city councilman Miles Bannan and Chadron Record sports editor Kevin Oleksy.

I’m quite hopeful this trend will continue, and that The Eagle will send many more brilliant minds out into the world to affect real, direly needed changes.

EDITORIAL–THE EAGLE’S VIEW

Why you need to attend ‘Extremities’ The benefit of theatre is that it allows us to explore subjects that can often be difficult to discuss in real life without consequences to the people involved.

Feb. 12 - 15, the Chadron State College theatre program will be performing “Extremities,” a play that unapologetically delves into rape culture to explore a number of facets and assumptions about rape and sexual assault that we tend to overlook without thinking.

The performance is a moving one, and is timely with the heightened sensitivity toward rape sexual assault on college campuses across the country; this is no longer a topic which can be ignored, and should be confronted.

Director Scott Cavin will be hosting talk-back sessions after Thursday, Friday, and Saturday’s performances for audiences to discuss the play, ask questions of the actors, and explore the subject in greater detail.

An informed public is what we strive for, and “Extremities” is one of the most informing performances we’ve noticed in our collective tenures at CSC. It is the opinion of the Editorial Board that all students, faculty, and community members should see the performance in order to both start, and take part in the discussion.

Before I graduated from high school, it was tradition that we would receive a little present from our past: eighth grade portfolios. These giant binders were filled with poetry, writing assignments, pictures, and other keepsakes that we felt, back in eighth grade, described us. Pretty much every one of us had that moment when we opened up the front cover.

Was I really this annoying? Why did I ever think that was cool? I would’ve kicked my own ass. This is a pretty natural reaction, and part of me thinks it was the school’s way of taking us Big Bad Seniors down a peg before heading off to the “real world,” and I think it kind of worked.

I think the more time passes, the easier it is to romanticize things from our past, which can be a good or bad thing. I’m sure I’m not alone when I get excited about hearing a song that I haven’t heard in forever come on, or see that Third Rock from the Sun came on Netflix. It’s the reason I own We’re Back and Drumline on DVD.

We crave the things that meant something to us from our childhood, even if they’re shitty.

The problem that I see coming from this is there is a huge generational divide. It seems like every generation thinks every younger generation is going downhill. The phrase “kids these days” is older than the oldest people using it.

None of this is new, but the thing people fail to realize is something that you think is meaningful from your childhood, isn’t inherently meaningful to everyone. Land Before Time movies, may be cool to you, but they may be super lame to kids that are watching How To Train Your

Dragon, and that’s okay. It’s fascinating to me that my fellow 20-somethings are caught saying things like “I feel so old!” because their younger sibling doesn’t know who Missy Elliot is. My parents don’t understand why the President went on YouTube.

Their parents don’t understand rap, and their parents didn’t understand rock ‘n’ roll. On and on it goes.

It seems to me that we could all stand to realize none of these mediocre movies, music artists, TV shows, etc. are inherently that great. They’re great to us because of the time in our lives that they affected us.

I guess my point is, I think all generations could benefit by being a little more open to things from outer generations. Investigate some older music or movies. Be open to new music.

Show respect to elders, but also don’t expect respect from those younger than you by not showing any in return. And most of all, be understanding of the younger generation. Go ahead and try to remember how you were when you were younger, and realize that the world isn’t doomed.

Don’t be a generation-ist.

Head to Head: Cynicism A negative outlook doesn’t accomplish anything.

Sycophantic praise does little to effect change.

he word “cynicism” has many different definitions depending on where you search, but a common thread between nearly all of them is a general contempt for or distrust of the motives of others. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t often in this mindset.

We live in an age where citizens fear the police that are supposed to protect them and where women are hard-pressed to speak out without having the word “feminist” spat at them as if it were a racial slur.

People have good reason to be distrustful of others; human nature is more terrifying than any Stephen King tale.

The issue here is that the thin line between justifiable frustration with the world and pedantic whining is an easy one to blur. Without a doubt, humanity in general could stand for a few improvements.

What the world doesn’t need is more keyboard warriors and coffee shop heroes who believe they’re doing the rest of us a favor by picking apart the work of others.

They believe nothing is adequate, everything is too commercialized, and that without their butter knife-sharp wit, the general population of plebeians would have no idea what to be outraged about.

I have always valued criticism, as do most who take their craft seriously, but there is a monumental difference between necessary criticism and negativity for negativity’s sake.

The quintessential cynical a-hole believes he and his ilk are the only ones who see the world for what it truly is. To them, the rest of the world is still sleeping, and their supposedly scathing social commentaries are part of the greater good.

It rings true that throughout history society sometimes needs someone to pull the curtain back on real issues. Considering everyone who doesn’t share your narrow worldview an idiot is not the same thing.

Those with real clarity recognize that, at least in the social media age, the cynical ahole is little more than a parasite, leeching the morale of those who actually intend on making a difference.

Society fetishizes ideas. They enjoy promises of change and a bright future, but often do little to contribute besides offer moral support via a shared picture on

A Facebook. The world over eats TED Talks like candy, riding high on waves of temporary, meaningless inspiration.

Cynics, supposedly far too enlightened for that, instead fetishize pessimism.

Some argue that a cynical outlook arises naturally out of the abysmal state society is in, which I consider to be an excuse.

Don’t like the state of something? Be an agent of change. Words can be powerful, but if you believe that your edgy slam poetry about society is somehow any less vapid than someone’s New Year’s Resolution, you need to get a clue.

Has it ever occurred to most cynics that they might hate themselves and the world around them because they don’t feel satisfied with the direction their lives are taking?

Negativity is a mindset that we love to wallow in. It feels good to be angry, it feels good to blame others, and it’s a hell of a lot easier than taking any personal responsibility.

If one doesn’t do anything to contribute to society, he can’t rightfully call himself part of it, and it’s easy to hate something you view as separate from yourself.

But nothing could possibly be wrong with cynics, because they have it all figured out.

They’re stuck at a 9 to 5 they hate because that’s the card this crappy society dealt them. They always wanted to be in a band but never had the time because those revolutionary blog posts aren’t going to write themselves.

I’m as guilty as anyone of a cynical outlook. I believe right now we’re all on a proverbial Titanic, and the lifeboats are filling up fast.

Still, I would rather help someone aboard than sneer about how they should have learned to swim.

s a society, we pay a lot of lip service to self-expression. However, when someone expresses something we perceive to be “negative,” how do we react?

We rise on our high-horse and engage in the quixotic crusade; we either blame the critic for their acute observations, or we choose to pity whatever happened that turned them cynical. Rather than put forward the work and attempt to see things from a critical perspective, it’s so much easier to ignore protests and brand suffering as self-imposed.

This, to me, is an indication that we’ve become cynical about cynicism. We engage in the idolatry of “the man in the arena,” not because that ideal is more important, but because it is more palatable to root for the gladiator. That is nothing new; rather, it’s a relic of the limited binary thought that defined the modern age, and it’s high time we moved past that way of thinking.

It’s been said that cynicism is intellectually lazy because you limit your perspective. You are seen as narrow-minded if you discount the entire human race as villians who strategically game for their own personal benefit. But selfishness has been demonstrated throughout human history, so to me it seems far lazier to don rosetinted glasses and paint one’s world view with transcendental platitudes. What can be gained from ignoring the fact that people, by their very nature, are selfish pricks?

The crowds who engage in the positivity-centric approach prefer to place their bets on the future and ignore the problems of the present. Rather than confronting the harsh immediacy and problems of today, they prefer to fantasize about some nonexistent utopic future and naively believe that things will work themselves out.

If you can just close your eyes and dream hard enough, the problem will go away on its own. That ideal seems narrow to me.

But the thing that’s important to look at is that Theodore Roosevelt gave his “man in the arena” speech in Paris in 1910; a century and five years short of a score ago.

His words are not timeless, nor are they enduring; they don’t bear particular reverence to any larger “truth.” Again, we only worship “the man in the arena,” because

the ideals are more palatable, not because they are necessarily correct.

The thought is that “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”

However, here’s where the disconnect is: no one invites the cheerleader to come watch game footage and offer feedback.

There’s a gap between positive thought and positive action and a common complaint can be found in the “everyone gets a trophy,” trope; the mentality that rewards mediocrity, rather than fostering excellence. We would rather sit on the sidelines and cheer, rather than get on the field and demonstrate what winning looks like.

So I think what we really need is to start paying more attention to the critics and learn to foster our own skeptical and critical senses. The more we are saturated by TED talks and sappy inspirational shareworthy nonsense, the more we put our cart before the horse and do ourselves a greater disservice by being content.

In reality, no matter how fastidious or polemic or sardonic I might be, I don’t think you should ever stop questioning. If you give up your ability to inquire about your surroundings, you will never grow, and you will never progress. That’s where I see disservice being done by paving over problems with sycophantic praise; you don’t congratulate someone for a “job well done” if they didn’t do a good job in the first place. Just being the doer of deeds no longer suffices in this day and age.

Rather than continuing our needless idolization of “the man in the arena,” perhaps we should recognize the facts of our ideals; selfless acts are rarely demonstrated by the mob that sip champagne and cheer on as the ship sets sail from port.

Perhaps the extraordinary character isn’t even exercised by the man who helps others on to those proverbial lifeboats; rather, virtue has always been the prerogative of the captain who sacrifices everything to go down with his ship.

In the song “Blurred Lines,” Robin Thicke says “I know you want it” 18 times. Ignore it, defend it, abhor it; we live in a world where consent takes a back seat to objectification, and where plays like William Mastrosimone’s “Extremities” are more important than ever.

This play is the most recent ambition for Chadron State College’s theatre department, following a string of increasingly intense and intelligent plays. “Extremities” is both of those things. The play follows three roommates whose true colors show after a serial rapist breaks in and attacks one of them. The attacked woman, Marjorie, played by Jada Fisk, senior of Rapid City, South Dakota, is torn from her normal morning by a horrific mental and physical assault. Miraculously, Marjorie overpowers the rapist, and in one of the most intense scenes I’ve ever watched, she brutalizes her would-be killer.

Doug Valade, senior of Gering, plays Raul, the rapist. Clean-cut and just a little creepy, Valade’s Raul commands chauvinistic lust and psychotic fear with equal power. Combine that with Fisk’s victim turned vengeance, and the pair’s chemistry is gasoline and matches. Raul’s desperate mental games and Marjorie’s iron resolve blur the boundaries between attacker and victim, between, as Marjorie says, “the animals” In this living room battlefield, Raul pits Marjorie and her friends against each other to escape. Marjorie is the voice of anger. Raul broke in to attack her, after stalking her for weeks, and Marjorie tortures him to confess his attempted rape in front of her roommates. This self-defense turned vigilante justice proves problematic when Raul threatens that no court will believe her nonexistent rape story. Fisk’s ferocious, fear-driven performance kept me tense the entire play, and her intensity is only matched by her variety.

The next woman, Terry, played by Tami Rethman, junior of Verden, is the voice of society. She just wants the whole trauma to go away. As the story unfolds, the audience learns that Terry has more intimate experience with rape then even Marjorie, but she insists on brushing it away. Defending yourself will only get you arrested or killed, and for this whistle-wearing woman, survival beats justice. Rethman’s Terry embodies the cultural pulse so well, audience members may find in her some-

thing they don’t like about themselves.

Last on the scene is Patricia, played by sophomore of Sturgis, South Dakota, Jessica Schepers. She is the voice of the law, bringing legalese and rationality into the boiling mix. Schepers’ Patricia sees court as the only solution, and tries to apply psychotherapy to the embattled Marjorie. Patricia captures the strict, prescriptive mentality that the law offers rape victims, and her tactics work about as well as the law’s work in real life. Schepers’ composure and force are perfect to play against Fisk’s passion, and their exchanges reveal Marjorie’s real fear: that once it starts, rape—of one’s life— never ends.

This is one of the painful truths Mastrosimone’s play reveals. The work isn’t preachy; it’s dark and strong, and if you don’t think you should see it, that’s exactly why you should.

The set is compact and clever, the props precise and detailed, the costumes unobtrusive and honest, and the sound design, heart-breaking. However, all of these elements fade out of view as the story’s burning interrogation light turns towards us. The audience can’t help but feel a connection, vulnerability, horror, pity, or all of those at once. The show is masterful not only for it’s cringe-worthy effects and heart-stopping choreography, it’s utterly human. No one is the “good guy,” no one the “bad guy.” Valade’s Raul is creepy, coarse, and evil, but Fisk’s revenge-fueled Marjorie stoops to the same levels as the play progresses. Ultimately, sexual assault leaves every participant broken, showing the true, destructive nature of the act. Only the audience benefits from seeing the battlefield. We’re the ones who learn.

More powerful than the outright violence, however, is the effort of the other roommates, Terry and Patricia, to ignore it. When Raul turns the pair against Marjorie, even though the audience saw him assault her, we can’t help but feel convinced. Our own convictions turn against us, and the play capitalizes on that. Scott Cavin, director, brought “Extremities” to CSC to promote conversations on rape. We want to act like Terry and Patricia, and sweep discomfort under the rug. The play allows us to overcome that. Please, do your future self a favor and see “Extremities.” It’s worth it, just to read program. It’s worth it, because you may find yourself on a jury one day. It’s worth it, because if you think you know what they’re going to say: you’re wrong. It’s worth it, because this show’s blurred lines showed me a clearer picture than I’ve seen in a long time.

Men win 1 in Colorado, move to 6-14 Preston Goehring Distribution Manager Chadron State traveled to Gunnison, Colorado, Friday to take on the Western State Colorado University Mountaineers. The Eagles earned their sixth win of the season, 94-83, thanks to a lights out second half.

After a rocky start, CSC came back from a nine-point deficit early in the first and battled hard to earn a five-point lead going into halftime.

The Eagles came out swinging in the second half, shooting almost 67 percent from the field and 80 percent from behind the arc. CSC took off on a 20-point lead, never letting the Mountaineers regain the advantage.

A trio of Mountaineers did the majority of the work on offense. Seniors Mason Biddle, of Riverside, California, and Devin Kastrup, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, along with junior Danny Hopkins, of Riverside, California, combined for 50 points and 17 rebounds.

Kendrick Holliman, senior of Spanish Fort, Alabama, earned his first double-double of the season.

Holliman shot 7 of 13 from the field, ending with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Senior Josiah Lee, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, finished with a perfect night from beyond the arc, draining all three, to finish with 19.

Christopher Smith, senior of Pasadena, California, added a game-high five assists to go along with 10 points.

Sharing the ball well, Chadron State finished with 16 assists as a

team. The Eagles also used their defense to fuel the offense, earning 23 points off turnovers.

“Everyone was aggressive but on balance when attacking the basket; therefore, each time we attacked, if we drew in the defense, we’d find open guys, but if the defense didn’t help, we’d do the obvious and finish strong,” Holliman said. “When my teammates got going offensively, the attention left me, and that allowed me to get going as well. We had five guys in double figures, and when all of us get going it’s a long night for any team in the RMAC.” The Eagles were unfortunately unable to keep the momentum Saturday, losing to Colorado Mesa University, 85-51.

CSC hit only five shots in the first half, allowing the Mavericks to take a 29-point lead into the break.

Once again, a trio of players doomed the Eagles. Juniors Ryan Stephan, of Lakewood, Colorado, and Julian Vasquez, of Miami, scored 19 and 17, respectively. Redshirt sophomore Nate Hawley, of Montrose, Colorado, added 17 for the Mavericks.

Holliman led the Eagles with 13.

Evan Brooks, senior of Ontario, California, and Roderick Butler, junior of Detroit, both added 12.

“The only difference (between Friday and Saturday) was we didn’t come out with the same energy and focus the second game,” Lee said. “And their game plan against us was pretty effective playing zone instead of man to man.”

Chadron State will tip off against Colorado Christian at 7:30 p.m., Friday at the Chicoine Events Center.

Eagle wrestlers fall to Cowboys, destroy Grizzles Janelle Kesterson Lifestyles Editor Last week the CSC Eagle wrestlers traveled to Las Vegas, New Mexico, and Alamosa, Colorado, to take on the New Mexico Highlands University Cowboys and the Adams State University Grizzlies.

Thursday, the Eagles fell to the Cowboys, 10-22.

CSC started out strong with a 13-7 win from Robert Ozuna, freshman of Omaha, 125-pounds, but they couldn’t keep the momentum and dropped the 133-pound match.

Zack Denney, redshirt freshman of North Platte, 141-pounds, earned a decision for CSC, but that win was a stand alone. Three Cowboy decisions followed.

However, Caleb Copeland, sophomore of Bennett, Colorado, 174-pounds, brought the heat and earned a 14-6 major decision over his opponent, racking

up the third win for the Eagles.

The CSC wrestlers upped their game Friday winning the dual against the Grizzlies, 27-17.

Wins came from Taylor Summers, sophomore of Plymouth, 133-pounds; Denney; Jacob Anderson, sophomore of Central City, 149-pounds; Reed Burgener, sophomore of Douglas, Wyoming, 157-pounds; Devan Fors, senior of Roseburg, Oregon, 197-pounds; and Jake Weber, sophomore of Rapid City, South Dakota, 285-pounds.

Both Burgener and Fors won their matches by fall in 6:17 and 1:31, respectively. Summers earned a forfeit, and the rest of the Eagle victories were decisions.

The next wrestling action will be on the road against the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers in Golden, Colorado, and will be the last regular season match before the Eagles travel to the Super Region Four Tournament in Pueblo, Colorado.

Track athletes impress at Birds and Bees Invite Collin Brook Reporter

The Chadron State track team won multiple events and set records at the Birds and Bees Indoor Track and Field Meet, Gillette, Wyoming.

Demarcus Simpson, freshman of Lafayette, Georgia, broke the long jump record.

Simpson jumped 25 feet, 3 1/4 inches, breaking the previous school record of 24-8 1/2 that Simpson set in December 2014.

Simpson currently leads the NCAA Division II with the mark.

Simpson also won the 60-meter dash Saturday in 6.81 seconds.

Other winners for CSC men this weekend include Chris Cutcher, sophomore of Colorado Springs, Colorado, with a time of 8.13 in 60 high-hurdles, and junior Kyle McCarthy, of Aurora, with a career-best 52-2 1/2 shot put distance.

The women’s team continue to impress this season as well, notably Shelby Bozner, junior of Rock Springs, Wyoming, and Kelsy Wood, sophomore of Hemingford. Bozner broke the school pentathlon record of 3,747 points set by Caryn Martin in 1993. Bozner ended with a 3,759 total points, which should be enough to qualify for Nationals in March.

Wood scored a career-best 3,509 points while placing second in the pentathlon, and will also qualify for the national meet.

Tiffany Thomas, junior of Kingston, Jamaica, won the 400, posting a time of 58.93.

Tessa Gorsuch, sophomore of Rapid City, South Dakota, won the 60 hurdles at 8.96; Mel Herl, junior of Eaton, Colorado, won the weight throw at 59-7 1/2; and Angelique Urenda, sophomore of Pueblo, Colorado, won the high jump at 5-3. The 4x400 women’s team also won with a time of 3:59.22, and consisted of Wood, Thomas, Bozner, and Nikki Glasson, junior of Wheatland, Wyoming. Finally, Stachia Reuwsaat, sophomore of Black Hawk, South Dakota, won the women’s long jump event at 19-11 1/2.

Chadron State’s track and field teams’ next competition is the South Dakota State Invitational Meet in Brookings Friday and Saturday.

Mavericks halt women’s win streak Christopher Smith Reporter The Chadron State women’s basketball team split on the road this weekend taking on the Western State Colorado University Mountaineers, Gunnison, and Colorado Mesa University Mavericks, Grand Junction, in RMAC matchups.

Friday, the Eagles took on the Mountaineers, opening the game with a 14-0 run and never looked back, winning, 70-60, for their fourth straight win.

CSC was up 19 points before Western State attempted a comeback, cutting the lead to single digits early in the second half. Stephanie Knowles, junior guard of Colorado Springs, Colorado,

and freshman center Maka Daysh, of Tauranga, New Zealand, helped fend off the comeback with 21 points and 16 points, respectively.

It wasn’t the best shooting performance for either team. CSC shot 35 percent for the game and the Mountaineers shot 32 percent. The big impact of the game was free throws, the Eagles hit 25 of 35 free throws which helped carry them to victory.

Saturday, the Eagles fell to Mesa to end their four-game wining streak, 7860. Turnovers were a problem for CSC committing 14 while Mesa only committed five.

In the first half, the Eagles got off to an impressive start putting together a 15-point lead before going cold in the

last four minutes of the first half with a 34-31 lead.

The two teams went back and forth in the second half before the Mavericks went on a 31-13 run to win the game.

The Mavericks were led by sophomore Erin Reichle, of Pleasant View, Utah, scoring 24 of her 34 points in the second half. The Eagles hurt themselves shooting poorly from the free-throw line going 5 of 14.

Knowles led the Eagles in scoring shooting 7 of 9 from the field finishing with 16 points. Daysh chipped in 14 points.

The Eagles will host Colorado Christian University and Colorado School of Mines Friday and Saturday at the Chicoine Events Center.

Softball team swings into season, drops 6 in Florida Evan Brooks Reporter

The Chadron State softball team dropped six this weekend when they traveled to Clearwater, Florida, to compete in the Eckerd College Invitational.

On the Eagles’ first day out, they made things interesting in both games. Matching up first against the host, Eckerd College, CSC fell short by a score of 4-3, though they were in control of the game until the final inning.

The Eagles got the ball rolling in the second inning, in which Zoe Humphries, sophomore catcher of Arvada, Colorado, bombed a solo homerun to score the first run of the game. A double by Courtney Lecher, sophomore shortstop of Fort Collins, Colorado, kept things going, and Taylor Bauer, sophomore infielder of Rapid City, South Dakota, followed with a single to bring Lecher home.

Following the second inning, the Eagles struggled to put any more runs on the board, scoring only once more through the sixth inning, but holding Eckerd to just one run through the sixth inning.

The Eagles owned a 3-1 lead entering the final inning, but fell apart, giving up a walk-

off double with the bases loaded.

Not having time to harp on the loss, the Eagles’ next opponent, Barry University, was waiting for them on another field.

Scoreless through four innings, CSC trailed 3-0 heading into the fifth, where they scored the first of two total runs.

Barry would also score once more to secure a 4-2 victory over the Eagles.

Chadron State was back in action Saturday for games against Saint Leo University and the No. 17-ranked University of Tampa.

The Eagles got off to a good start against Saint Leo, jumping out to a 2-0 lead behind a single from Casey Polk, senior catcher of Golden, Colorado, who brought home Lecher and Rebecca Wetsch, senior outfielder of Erie, Colorado.

In the second, Saint Leo would respond with a four-run inning that the Eagles were unable to bounce back from. Saint Leo would score in each following inning to pull away and defeat the Eagles, 12-2.

Again, Chadron State had new life, matching up against All-American pitcher Julia Morrow, senior of Baiting Hollow, New York, and the University of Tampa shortly afterward.

The Eagles fought tough in the game, holding Tampa to only one run through four

innings despite scoring none themselves.

But in the fifth inning, Tampa scored three runs behind three walks and three singles.

Tampa went on to win the game 4-0.

On the third and final day of the Invitational, CSC matched up with Palm Beach Atlantic University and Lynn University.

The Eagles came out hungry against PBA, with Bauer, Wetsch, and Jessica Eatmon, senior outfielder of Broomfield, Colorado, giving CSC three consecutive hits. However, PBA still managed to escape the inning without giving up a run.

Chadron State was held scoreless, and PBA ran away with the game after scoring four runs in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead.

They went on to win, 10-0.

The Eagles found themselves down 2-0 to Lynn University early on, but bounced back in the third with Lecher reaching for a single up the middle, stealing second, and being brought home by a Polk single.

Down 2-1 after the third, the Eagles committed two errors in contribution to giving up five runs in the fourth. Bekka Prokaski, sophomore infielder of Broomfield, Colorado, went on to score one more run for the Eagles after placing a bunt and being brought home by Aspen Eubanks, freshman infielder of Broomfield, Colorado.

Despite their fighting effort, the Eagles fell to Lynn, 9-2.

Although they did not conclude the weekend in the fashion that they would have liked, the Eagles did good things and used the experience as a learning tool.

“I think we learned a lot about ourselves individually and as a team this weekend,” Wetsch said. “I believe we also learned that this game requires a lot more mental strength than most people think. The scores of our games do not directly reflect what we have accomplished so far, and they do not reflect how great of a team we really are.”

The team has demonstrated throughout the preseason their care for one another, and they feel like it will propel them to perform well this season.

“I feel as though our team is extremely close now,” Eubanks said. “When we were out there, all we had was each other to fall back on. The trip was definitely something we needed.”

The Eagles will be back at it next weekend, as they will travel to compete in the West Texas Woodward Invitational.

“We need to produce runs,” Wetsch said.

“There’s no doubt about that. I believe that we need to go back and focus on the fundamentals and getting mentally stronger.”

‘Survivor’ provides survival skills for a lifetime Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor There are not many shows in the television world that last for 30 seasons on the air. In fact, the only show that comes up when you search “30 seasons on the air” on Google is “Survivor.”

“Survivor” made its Season 1 premiere on May 31, 2000. At that time, I was five years old.

I do not remember watching that first season, or any of the earlier seasons really, but my dad and I have watched every episode of “Survivor” since that first one.

“Survivor’s” Season 30 is starting at the end of this month and you can bet your immunity idol I’ll be watching the episode at least twice to fully analyze the show.

In case you’ve never watched an episode of “Survivor,” the show is about 16 contestants who get stranded in a remote location. The contestants are split into either two or three tribes.

Each tribe starts off the season with a bag of rice and a water well at the camp. The castaways are required to start a fire and build a shelter, usually before the first day is over.

The tribes then compete in challenges, sometimes for rewards, sometimes for immunity. When one tribe wins immunity, the other tribe is sent to tribal council. This is where we hear, “The tribe has spoken,” as they vote out one member of the tribe.

‘Dirty Dancing’ embodies Students use hoax to gain perspective more than just dirty dancing Teri Robinson Photo Editor Dancing and love provide the basis of the 1987 romantic drama movie based in 1963-“Dirty Dancing.” This movie follows the life of Frances “Baby” Houseman, played by Jennifer Grey, through a summer with her family at a resort before she joins the Peace Corp. Over the duration of the summer at the Kellerman’s resort in the Catskill Mountains, Baby’s curiosity leads her to the staff quarters where she meets Johnny Castle, played by Patrick Swayze, a dance instructor, and develops a connection with him. Baby quickly finds herself pulled into the lifestyle of the staff ’s living and witnesses how the staff is treated.

After forming a connection with a few of the staff, Baby begins to make excuses to escape from bingo and card games to being around the energetic and spontaneous staff dancers. Johnny’s dance partner becomes pregnant and has it “taken care of ” only to become sick from a botched job. Due to this Baby and Johnny must perform a big dance number, and spend countless hours practicing the routine.

be patient with a different kind of dance lesson as he taught her. As they spend most of the summer together they begin to open up and share their lives with each other; their hopes and dreams.

This movie has been a favorite of mine because I’m a hopeless romantic, but also due to the innocence of both Baby and Johnny. From the beginning of the movie you can tell how sheltered she is, but how pure and innocent Baby truly is. Johnny, however, comes off a tough, protective dance instructor. It’s not until Baby becomes close with Johnny that the viewer is able to see who Johnny is and how both lead characters are similar. Through each other, Baby and Johnny discover the courage they need to be who they are and stand up to their superiors.

When I first watched this movie I thought it would be very uncomfortable, due to the title and because I was watching it with my grandmother. However, this is one of my favorite classic movies and the message will always stay with me.

Yes, there is dirty dancing in the movie, however, it is not the same as what most associate with those two words now. To me, the dances of that time may be considered dirty, but they helped the dancer portray emotion and release energy; whether negative or positive.

The students of Professor and Department Chair of Education Donald King’s SPED 230: Introduction to the Exceptional Learner class were provided with an opportunity to participate in an activity titled “Nails in the Fence- Victimization Perceptions Regarding Differences.”

This activity was not mandatory, and only students who were comfortable participating did so. The activity was based off of a poem titled “Nails in the Fence” by an unknown author.

The main idea behind the poem is that once harsh words are spoken, a person can apologize, but those words are like nails that have been driven into a fence. The nails can be taken out, but the holes will still remain in the fence; likewise, the person the harsh words were spoken to will still have emotional scars.

The purpose of the activity was for the students to gain a more specific understanding of the potential negative social victimization encountered by individuals who are labeled as disabled.

For this activity, students who participated self-identified with a negative social construct, condition, or characteristic (i.e. pregnant, disabled, substance abuser, etc.) The students then waited to see how their friends, and acquain-

tances responded to the information.

The activity was cut short by the administration because of potential harm to these students or other students on campus who may turn to the students participating with their own negative social constructs in confidence only to find out that it was not actually true.

King and Kayla Rundquist, freshman of North Platte, self-identified as being bisexual/gay; Phillip Duncan, freshman of Chadron, identified as a drug user; Cody Davis, sophomore of Fort Morgan, Colorado, identified as a drug dealer; Megan Fish, freshman of Mitchell, identified as a self-inflicted abuser; Courtney Munger, sophomore of Newcastle, Wyoming, and Morgan Hays, sophomore of Douglas, Wyoming, identified as being pregnant; Matthew Rader, sophomore of Bridgeport, identified as a having a sexually transmitted disease; and Dianna Hale, sophomore of Douglas, Wyoming, and Marissa Apland, freshman of Spearfish, South Dakota, identified as having an eating disorder.

King wanted to make sure that all students and faculty on campus were made aware that the social constructs were not true.

“I would expect my good friends to come directly to me and ask about the rumor, rather than talking about it behind my back,” King said. “When we do that we are only perpetuating potential misinformation that can be hurtful to ones self and their family.”

Power Team uses strength to evangelize to students, community Teri Robinson & Preston Goehring Photo Editor, Distribution Manager Breaking stacks of concrete with bare hands and preaching the word of God was on the agenda last Thursday through Sunday as The Power Team helped over 250 Chadron State College students and community members commit to Christ.

The Power Team, a non-profit organization, is celebrating its 40th year, and is a group of athletes who use power, strength, and inspiration to help spread the gospel and bring people to God. They are currently composed of 15 men. The Power Team travels to all 50 states and 60 different countries. Based out of Dallas, the members of this team come from all across America and each bring their past to encourage and inspire others to commit to God. Last Thursday, students and community members filled every seat in the Student Center Ballroom and Scottsbluff

rooms for opening night. The Power Team Vice President Jeremy Baker, 22-year-old Kaleb Wright, and Greg Graham took the stage and began by turning stacks of cement blocks to rubble in minutes. Each night the three men used their brute strength to pump up the crowd, and share their personal stories of committing to Christ.

Performing incredible feats of strength such as popping a 10 year guarantee hot water balloon, bending steel rods and steel frying pans, ripping license plates with their teeth, bending a horseshoe into a heart, and running through two two-by-fours taped together, are a few examples of how they grab the audience’s attention.

Baker said the reason for beginning each performance in such a way is to grab an audience of high school student’s attention the “last period on a Friday afternoon.” Instead of stepping on stage and beginning to preach the word of God, The Power Team wants to grab the audience’s attention, and breaking cement blocks with their arms is a great

way to accomplish that.

“I love what I do,” Baker said. “The message is a message about being a leader.”

In preparation for each performance they work out five days a week, prepare mentally for the show by walking through it, and spiritually by praying.

Different churches from the surrounding area, including Chadron Community Church, Chadron Christian Church, First Baptist church, Ridgeview, and First Congressional Church of Crawford came together to help bring The Power Team to Chadron for four days.

As the display of physical power came to an end, Baker began to preach about the importance of spiritual power. He shared several examples from his life that showed that physical strength cannot last, but nothing can break a strong spirit.

At the end of the show each night The Power Team prayed and invited those who wanted to accept God into their life to join them on stage and sign their cards of commitment. Each night they also gave the audience an opportunity to donate to a love offering.
