Mariah Busch Reporter Kelli Bowlin Reporter Senate plans to explore possible scholarship funds to create more competition, participation, and involvement from the student body.

Scholarships of $200 would be available to members of Senate and executive members of CAB. A formal committee consisting of Senate members, CAB members, student body, and faculty would create the regulations regarding scholarship allocations. Senate President Jacob Rissler views the scholarship as an incentive to involve more members of the student body and create competition for Senate positions. Scholarship opportunity could promote a shift from the petition elections to student body elections. No set date has been made as to when scholarships would be available.

Senate also discussed purchasing 10 water bottle refill stations. Each station would cost about $1,500.

Funding from revenue bonds may be available. Twothirds majority vote initiated further exploration.

CAB Chair Lane Swedberg reminded Senate that free bowling will be 8-11 p.m., Saturday; free movie night is 7:15 p.m., Sunday. To inform the student body of these events Reminder 101, a free texting service, is being pursued.

Senate approved $153.48 from the foundation account toward going-away gifts for former Executive of Student Life Aaron Prestwich. Gifts included CSC memorabilia for Prestwich and his family. Rissler reiterated the funds for the gifts did not come from the student account.

Student Trustee applications are due March 14 to the office of the Vice President for Students/Student Services/Student Affairs.

Senate Treasurer Ashley Swanson reported $130, 514.81 in unallocated funds.

Tuesday, CAB allocated funds to support various clubs’ activities. Swedberg again stressed the importance of the attendance of each club’s CAB representative, as this has an effect on the distribution of funds.

Allocations that were passed include $1,500 for free bowling night; $1,800 for free movie night; $400 for the women’s ruby team registration; $1,300 for Blue Key events; $2,600 for the traveling fees and housing of Fred Whitfield, a world renowned calf roper, and $300 for Cardinal Key events. see SENATE, Page 3

Advising month assists Second annual Back on Track with withdrawls, registration Program set for Tuesday

With February being advising month many students are likely wondering about withdraw deadlines and registering for future semesters. “February is advising month meet with your academic advisor, check eaglemail for more information. Registration is open for current students for summer 2014, fall 2014 and spring 2015,” Start Academic Adviser, Danielle Hencey said.

“February 12 is the last day to withdraw from a first eight week course. The last day to withdraw from a full semester course is April 4,” Hencey said. However, some students might not know what it means to withdraw from a class.

“Withdraw means a grade of W; there is no refund and the course will be considered a repeat if taken in the future and the start office needs to take care of those requests,” Hencey said.

ADVISING MONTH

The second success seminar for the Back on Track Program, hosted by the Start Office, will be at 5 p.m., Tuesday, in the Student Center Lakota/Bordeaux room. This follows the first success seminar that was on Feb. 4, which was put on by the Cardinal Key and Blue Key members.

“The Back on Track program is meant to enhance the chances of academic success of students in probation and to meet with mentors,” Frances Gonzalez, learning center coordinator, said.

Students who are part of the Back on Track program have to fill out the Back on Track student contract. In the program, students will follow an academic action plan and fill out an academic success check-off list, after meeting with their academic advisers and weekly meetings with their mentors.

“I assign tutors as mentors to students in the program,” Gonzalez said. Students in the program will attend four academic seminars the next of which will be done by SEAN Student Education Association of Nebraska.

Jessica Jester, recruiter for “The Big Event,” informed clubs that the job sites for this year’s “The Big Event” have doubled, meaning more people will need to commit to participating when the event occurs April 26. Registration for “The Big Event” will be March 17 in the Student Center, and all are encouraged to sign up.

Three clubs were voted in to CAB, bringing the number of clubs on campus to 41, an exciting occurrence as CSC has never had more than 40. Clubs that were recently added include Phi Beta Lambda, Rotaract, and the Sharp Shooters Club. Phi Betal Lambda is a business club, Rotaract is the college equivalent of the Rotary Program, and the Sharp Shooters Club is an archery and trap shooting club. The Sharp Shooters will be having their first meeting this Friday, February 14 at the 4-H center from 6-7:20 p.m.

EDITORIAL–THE EAGLE’S VIEW

Remember that loved ones are important

A

n American philosopher Henry David Thoreau once said, “Children, who play life, discern its true law and relations more clearly than men…” This proposition is vague without a lot of context, so in other words, we as young adults often forget the importance of loved ones.

We forget this as we get carried away with our lives, then something of high magnitude occurs, and we remember and must always remind ourselves this truth.

When we were young, we all enjoyed pleasing those around us. Pleasing teachers by saying, “look Mrs. Teacher! I did it!” was common. Or grabbing a second item of anything anyone gave you, like candy bars, so that a sibling could have one as well. It is unfortunate that we seem to no longer care about the condition of loved ones, at least not often. We exhibit this change through the self-centered direction of our day-today lives.

Then something of high magnitude involving a loved one occurs and we are brought back to the truth. Whoever this is might tell you they need to discuss something. You will look up from your couch as you motion to rise, but then they will say, “Stay down. It is just a talk.” After a conversation occurs, the first one you have truly had with a loved one in years, you have to ask yourself, “Do I feel guilty?”

To conclude the conversation, they will tell you, “You should not wait until there is a baby to talk to me.” (Or whatever the occurrence is.) And though we have seen all the signs before, we only remember loved ones are important until after an occurrence so blatant.

Once we do remember however, it is in our power to change our ways. Remember something that happened when you were young. Call up your mother and tell her about it and that you love her. Look at yourself and what really matters. It is best to remember this so that when you are old, you say, “Everyone I know has gone away.”

Seize opportunity and find yourself M y freshman and sophomore years here in Chadron, I did little more than attend my classes and bunker down in my room because that was easier than being sociable and far less frightening than meeting new people.

Up until recently, I’ve always been one to cower in the sanctity of my comfort zone. In certain aspects, I still do. Familiarity may breed contempt, but for me, familiarity means a guarantee. I can’t be disappointed if I go with a sure thing. It’s the same reason that any time I go to a restaurant I get a burger and fries; it’s always a safe bet. What potential for disaster is there in a burger and fries?

Recently, there has been a bit of a paradigm shift in my life, and thus, a similar shift in my outlook. For the uninitiated, my gimmick around these parts has been one of a sarcastic, anti-social heavy metal guy who frequents in scowling and slinging offensive words. For the most part, all of that is still true.

However, I’ve made it my mission to step out from the shadow of my dorm room and discover the fabled college experience for myself. So far, I would say I haven’t done too poorly. I’ve frequented open mic nights, drank with strangers, gone days without sleep, and, more recently, traveled to “far away” lands.

With the help of one Dr. Sandy Schaefer and some very close friends of mine, I went to Anaheim, Calif., to attend the annual winter NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) show, the be-all-end-

all of showcases for those looking to make it in the music business industry. Having been in the same band for six years and recently starting to pursue a minor in music, I figured the trip would make an excellent opportunity to see if I had any real stake in music as a money-maker.

Leaving all pre-conceived notions behind at the airport, I made it my goal not to be the slack-jawed new guy with the bag full of free stickers. If I was going to be bumping shoulders with some of the industry’s biggest names, I was going to take advantage of the opportunity. More than four football fields worth of the hottest gear, biggest names and newest faces eagerly awaited me.

One week, a dozen business cards and some very sore feet later, we returned from sunny beaches to subzero temperatures and snow. Home sweet home. The two biggest lessons I brought home from California are ones that my younger self would scoff at.

Number one: know how to carry on a conversation. This seems obvious, but for the misanthropes and anti-socialites out there, I know how hard this can be. Both your working life and your day-to-day drudgery will be made a million times easier if you know how to smile, crack a joke, and acknowledge other human beings.

Lesson number two, and this is the important one, is to take an opportunity when it presents itself. There will always be thousands of reasons not to do something; money is never quite right, it’s just a little

Jeff McFarland Columnist too far from home, or your friends aren’t quite sure it’s best for you. If you wait for the stars to align before you do something, you will never do anything. It’s much better to look back and learn from an experience, be it a mistake or not, rather than wonder what could have been.

In the end, I’m still that sarcastic, notquite-as anti-social metal guy. I still enjoy scowling and I still enjoy offensive words.

The only real difference between freshman me and me now is that now, I’m trying to establish an identity. I’m trying to take chances and live a little for the sake of experience. I’m trying not to let the notions of others influence me. I’m trying to make it known to those around me that I’m not an extension of my friends or my family, I am my own entity. I might not know exactly who I am, but I know that I won’t find myself by hiding away from the world.

Be happy for the things that matter

W

hen you have a sewer problem, you call a plumber. When you have a dental problem, you go to a dentist. When you have a car problem, you go to a mechanic. So why on Earth would you go to a single girl for insight on Valentine’s Day? I realize your concern, and anyone who chose to have a friend perform minor dental work in order to save a few bucks would probably advise you to run (and fast). However, I’ve come to realize that being single gives you the most insight on who you really are, from appearance to your core.

Like most of you single gals out there, I’ve spent most of my years hating, even despising, Valentine’s Day. I’ve only had a boyfriend over the love-enthusiastic holiday twice.

The first Valentine’s Day I spent with a significant other we quickly exchanged gifts after we both got out of basketball practice. The second time I “celebrated” Valentine’s Day was after ending a huge argument (that didn’t get resolved), going out to eat, and then going our separate ways to meet back up at a Valentine’s Day dance that RLA was sponsoring. Needless to say, the romance level in my life is far from desirable.

The best Valentine’s Day I ever spent was when my mom, who decided I was “too unstable” to spend Valentine’s Day alone,

made the trek to Chadron to take me out to dinner. I always found the memory to be pathetic, embarrassing, and kind of “the story of my life” until an Instagram post took my V-Day view on a 180-degree spin.

I know what you’re thinking: if my credibility wasn’t already a little shaky, it is now, right? If reading this far in my opinion piece is the longest commitment you’ve had in awhile and/or you’re wondering where I’m going with this, I ask you to keep reading.

Also: I apologize for calling you out on the commitment thing.

The Instagram post said: “You don’t have a valentine on Valentine’s Day? Well, some people don’t have mothers on Mother’s Day or fathers on Father’s Day.” I admit that I felt selfish, ungrateful, and even a little disgusted with myself when I realized how unfortunately true this post was. Tragedies have taken place in the past few weeks in the lives of people around me that I couldn’t begin to imagine going through, let alone dealing with.

I would buy myself flowers and dinner every year from this Valentine’s Day forward if that meant I would get to celebrate other (more meaningful) holidays with the people that really matter, not the “things” that don’t matter forever.

For Valentine’s Day this year, or even from now on—maybe we could all try this thing where we are happy for others instead of envious of the things we don’t have. Everyone has the opportunity to be happy, we all just have different routes to get there.

Everyone is dealing with bumps in their own roads, just because they don’t come at the same time yours do, doesn’t mean their journey is easier. It just means it’s different.

Be thankful, be grateful, be happy.

“Have you ever noticed that when you’re going somewhere for the first time—somewhere you’ve never been —that it always takes longer to get there than it does to come back?” Little did I know that this simple and quite relatable statement set the mood for the mind journey I was about to begin. “The Play About the Baby” was brain antagonizing, confusing, and all around boggling without a single clue that it was doing such, until the end that is.

The encouraged and unavoidable audience participation leaves you no choice but to insert yourself in the play at a deeper level than merely a spectator. It forces you, captivates you, intrigues you to put yourself in each one of the character’s place of mind.

The play has everything our generation craves—the drama, the manipulation, the audience participation, and the sex. Girl, played by Ashley Rushman, senior of Gurley, exploits an innocent rawness that fully overtakes the mind, body, and soul of her lover, Boy, played by Derek Phelps, junior of Sidney. The young couple’s connection radiates through the majority of the first half of the play and even after struggle, despair, and loss Boy maintains that intense level of love to Girl. Although she reciprocate that level of love, her spirit has been crushed and I have to admit she took me down with her. Girl’s initial rawness made her lovable, yet mysterious. From the moment of her character’s existence she had my full and absolute attention. As her

emotions ranged across a wide spectrum of lust to anguish her captivation requires you to join in on the emotional roller-coaster of the play.

The roles of Man, played by Willis Miller, senior of Deer Trail, Colo., and Woman, played by Hannah Clark, junior of Littleton, Colo., couldn’t have been casted better. Their captivation feeds off one another at an advanced level. Man’s main partner is the audience. Man pushes, expecting full verbal communication from all members of the audience. There’s no escaping this, believe me I tried. The commitment to character by both Man and Woman is remarkable.

The character of Woman is executed seamlessly. The hilarious and nonsensical personality kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what she would do next. Her nonverbal communication almost out spoke her verbal communication throughout the play. Even when Woman was not speaking, I couldn’t help but to watch her because I didn’t want to miss out on her reaction.

As much as I would love to review the content and conflict of the play—I will not. Not only because I’m still trying to figure it out myself, but also because I don’t want to interfere on how this play will affect you. Each person will take away a different aspect of the play, whether it is a sad memory, or even just a comic relief—the play will impact you in a different way than the person sitting next to you, across from you, or behind you. It will make you think. How deep you let that thought go within yourself is up to you.

The overall commitment and level of excellence from the cast and crew is truly admirable.

Edward Albee’s “The Play About the Baby,” directed by Scott Cavin, is an intriguing production the CSC Theatre Department is presenting.

The perplexing combination of crude sexual humor and somber truth found within the monologues kept this viewer interested in what was occurring throughout the play. Although often lengthy, the number of monologues found within the play of Man, played by Willis Miller, senior of Deer Trail, Colo., and Woman, played by Hannah Clark, junior of Littleton, Colo., made me think about common occurrences in a different light, such as when you forget someone’s name or driving to a new destination.

Interaction with audience members adds humor to the characters. Particularly that of Miller’s Man, a complex character that tends to lead the direction of the play. I had a difficult time deciding if I liked this character. He is a confusing individual with his drawn-out, confusing monologues, and contemplative personality.

My favorite character was that of Clark’s Woman. She brought

much of the sexual humor to light with amusing facial expressions, suggestive gestures, and a witty personality.

The characters of Boy and Girl, played by Derek Phelps, junior of Sidney, and Ashley Rushman, senior of Gurley, are simpler characters but just as amusing and thoughtful as the previous duo.

The simple set consisting of a background made from paintsplattered cream muslin leaves and two old wooden chairs, leaves the setting of the play to the imagination, and causes the characters to give more context about the play. The set also assists the characters in having the audience pay close attention to their speeches and discussions.

While the play starts out humorous and light-hearted, it eventually turns dark and more serious. The play still appears witty, sexual, and slightly confusing except a noticeable darkness becomes visible in the characters’ vague motives.

At the end, I was left contemplating what message the characters were trying to get across. The ending is confusing and vague, left open to interpretation. The lights close with one thinking that there should be another scene. While much of the play is whimsical and titillating, the ending is what makes it introspective and purposeful. This production was well chosen for Valentine’s Day weekend for all of the “intrepid travelers” and lovebirds to enjoy and ponder, “What just happened?” in the end.

Wrestling shuts out Colorado Mines at home, 50-0 Janelle Kesterson Reporter The Eagle wrestlers’ next home dual is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight, at the NPAC, against the 5-6 Adams State University Grizzlies of Alamosa, Colo. The dual is Blackout Night for the Eagles.

This past week CSC competed in two duals: one away and one home. They first traveled to Dickinson, N.D., to compete against the 5-11 Dickinson State University Blue Hawks.

CSC started out strong with a 5:18 pin from Taylor Summers, redshirt freshman of Plymouth, 125-pounds. This was followed by a 12-0 major decision by Dustin Stodola, senior of Clarkson, 133-pounds.

Jacob Anderson, freshman of Central City, 149-pounds,

came back with a 2:31 pin, after the team gave up the 141-pound match.

CJ Clark, sophomore of Rapid City, S.D., 157-pounds, followed Anderson’s win with an 8-6 overtime victory.

The Eagles dropped another matched at 165 pounds, but Caleb Copeland, freshman of Bennett, Colo., 174-pounds, and Jordan DeBus, senior of Mitchell, 184-pounds, came back to win each of their matches by decision.

This was the end of the wins for Chadron State, but it was enough to secure a 25-15 win over the Blue Hawks.

CSC’s next match was against the 0-4 Colorado School of Mines Orediggers. The Eagle wrestlers were able to shut out the Orediggers during Saturday’s match to walk away with a score of 50-0.

Track victorious in 18 events Christopher Smith Reporter The CSC track team maintained their strong showing this past weekend at the Birds and Bees Invitational hosted in Gillette, Wyo. The men’s team received eight first place titles, while the women won an outstanding 10 events.

There were athletes from nine different schools that competed this past weekend.

Shelby Bozner, sophomore of Rock Springs, Wyo., was a double winner this weekend. Bozner won the pentathlon on Friday by scoring 3,577 points, which is the second highest total point in CSC history. She ran 9.04 seconds in the 60-meter high hurdles, and she matched the time the next day winning the event in open competition. Bozner is one of three CSC women who share the old record.

There were two other CSC women that were double winners this weekend. Stachia Reuwsaat, freshman of Black Hawk, S.D., jumped 19 feet to claim the long jump title. She also ran 7.94 seconds in the 60-meter obtaining a first place victory. Mel Herl, sophomore of Eaton, Colo., won the 20 pound weight throw (52-6) and the shot put (44-4 ¾).

The women’s CSC medley relay team also set a school record Friday with a time of 12:35.16 which is 13 seconds faster than the old mark. Rebecca Volf, junior of Wood River; Meagan Nahrwold, junior of Byers, Colo.; Shelby Guy, junior of Akron, Colo.; and Ashley Riesen, senior of Chadron; make up the team that holds this new record. Riesen also won the mile

with a time of 5:18.17.

Jayme Nunes, junior of Alliance, won the 3000-meter race with a career best 10:55.30, which beats her old best by roughly 20 seconds. Josey Pehringer, junior of Cody, Wyo., won the pole vault, scoring 10-6.

The only double winner for the men was Charith Kapukotuwa, senior of Chilaw, Sri Lanka. He won both the shot put (56-4 ¾) and the 35-pound weight throw (59-9 ½).

The men’s 4x400 relay team also won this weekend running 3:21.38. The runners of this relay team were Gavan Archibald, junior of St. Ann, Jamaica; Zerek Jones, sophomore of La Junta, Colo.; Xavier Kvistad, junior of Crawford; and Brandon Segelke, senior of Sidney.

Other Eagles that won individual events for the men were Karl McFarlane, senior of Montego Bay, Jamaica, 60-meter hurdles (8.03); Dean Francis, senior of Montego Bay, Jamaica, 200-meter (22.00); Chris Cuther, freshman of Colorado Springs, long jump (22-4); and Skylar Hoopes, sophomore of Lusk, Wyo., pole vault (15-1).

Greg Rodriguez, Junior of Del Rio, Texas, won the heptathlon, scoring an imposing 4,867 points. This point total in the heptathlon is the second highest in CSC record books, exceeded by only Brad Gamble who scored 5,456 points in the 2011 NCAA Division-II National Championships.

CSC Track and Field teams will participate in NCAA Qualifier Saturday at Adams State University in Alamosa, Colo.

DeBus won his match by forfeit, and Devan Fors, junior of Roseburg, Ore., 197-pounds, won his match with a 6-5 decision.

Michael Hill, junior of Fort Laramie, Wyo., 285-pounds, secured a pin in 2:18, helping the Eagles reach the 10-win mark against the Orediggers.

Chadron State is ranked second in the RMAC standings with an overall record of 11-5 and an RMAC record of 4-2. The team is ranked 21st of 25 in the Basford Division-II National Rankings. Two wrestlers, Stadola and DeBus, are ranked 4th and 6th respectively.

Men win 2 home games, 10-11 record Angie Webb Reporter Betty Mays Reporter The CSC men defeated Western State Colorado University, Gunnison, on Friday, 90-62, at Armstrong.

CSC set the tone early after forward Kendrick Holliman, junior of Spanish Fort, Ala., dunked after a defensive rebound. The half ended with a CSC 3-pointer by center Michael Safer, junior of Elizabeth, Colo., assisted by point guard Justyn Anderson, sophomore of Las Vegas, putting CSC ahead 47-21.

Chadron State scored 53 percent of its field goals in the first half. CSC made 47 percent of its 3-pointers in the half, while Western State made only 11 percent. Western State had no offensive rebounds during the entire game.

The second half proved more even, with Western scoring 41 points to CSC’s 43 points. However, CSC’s 3-pointer percentage remained significantly higher at 41 percent compared to Western 23 percent.

CSC’s lead never fell below 24 points after the first half.

Guard Evan Brooks, junior of

Ontario, Calif., led the team in scoring with 19 total points, making eight of his 10 attempted field goals, and three of five 3-pointers. Overall, CSC made 48 percent of its total field goals, 44 percent of 3-pointers, and 67 percent of free throws, ending the game CSC, 90, Western State, 62.

On Saturday, CSC competed against Colorado Mesa University, at Armstrong, winning 94-82.

Forward Kyle Vinich, junior of Casper, Wyo., was the first to score for the Eagles, sinking a jump shot, but CSC trailed by one within the first minute of the game. This was the last time that Mesa led for the remainder of the game.

CSC tied the school record for the most 3-pointers in a single game, making 17 out of 30. This allowed them to keep a steady lead going into the half leading Mesa, 49-38.

Coming back after the half, guard David Downey, senior of Scottsbluff, sunk a jump shot, bringing the score to 51-38.

Softball swings into action Women beat Western, lose to Mesa; 4-17 record Jordyn Hulinsky Sports Editor

Mouhamed Diop Reporter Clint Johnson Reporter CSC did not show any mercy beating Western State 70-48, Friday at Armstrong. The Eagles made 25 of 50 shots from the field, including eight of 19 3-pointers. CSC shot 12 of 19 free throws.

Kattie Ranta, senior of Rapid City, S.D., led the Eagles with 27 points and 10 rebounds, marking her 13th doubledouble of the season.

Kayli Rageth, senior of Kimball, scored 17 points, and guard Dallas Shaw, junior of Buffalo, Wyo., added 12 points and four steals.

The Eagles never trailed in this game.

The Eagles lost 95-62, against Colorado Mesa University, Grand Junction, Saturday at Armstrong. The Mavericks led 39-33 at half time.

The Eagles made 19 of 46 shots by the end of the second half, 50 percent from the 3-point line, and 65 percent from the free-throw line.

Rageth led the Eagles with 25 points and eight rebounds. Ranta scored 10 points and eight rebounds, and Shaw, posted 11 points with one rebound. They were the only three Eagles to achieve double figures in points.

The Eagles are 4-17 overall and 4-13 in the RMAC. CSC will play Colorado Christian University at 6 p.m. Friday in Lakewood, Colo.

CSC’s softball team came out of its first tournament 1-4. The team traveled to Las Vegas to compete in the MSU-Billings Desert Stinger last weekend.

The Eagles competed against Central Washington University, Ellensburg, losing 3-1; Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, winning 13-6; Azusa Pacific University, Calif., losing 4-1; California Baptist University, Riverside, Calif., losing 8-0; and finally St. Mary’s University, San Antonio, losing 3-2.

The Eagle’s single run against Central Washington came in the second inning. Rebecca Wetsch, junior of Erie, Colo., had a single-run homerun.

Against Simon Fraser, CSC started off right with a 2-run homerun by Katie Londo, senior of Colorado Springs, who also scored Shea Grahman, sophomore of Colorado Springs. Londo also batted in Sarah Knudsen, senior of Parker, Colo., during the third inning. Grahman scored again in the third off a single to left field by Jessica Eatmon,

The team will travel to Austin, Texas, to play five more games this weekend. The first game against St. Edward’s University, Austin, will be at 9 a.m., Friday. They will take on Texas Woman’s University, Denton, at 1:30 p.m., Friday. St. Edward’s will compete against the Eagles again at 3:45 p.m., Saturday. The final day of the tournament will face Texas A&M International University, Laredo, and CSC at 11:15 a.m., Sunday. The final game of the tournament will be Texas Woman’s University again at 1:30 p.m., Sunday.
