Jon Dahlstrom, of Broken Bow, carries some of his deceased nephew’s belongings down a hallway in Kent Residence Hall Monday. Dahlstrom’s nephew, CSC freshman Sterling Atkins, died Saturday from complications related to an enlarged heart.
HITTING THE RIGHT NOTES James Margetts, associate professor of music, is set to perform on a refurbished 1918 Steinway concert grand piano 3 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
Complications from an enlarged heart claimed the life of CSC freshman Sterling James Atkins, 18, of Broken Bow, Saturday evening while he was watching television with a friend at an off-campus Chadron residence, a family member said Wednesday. “The results of the autopsy was his heart was enlarged,” Wanda Dahlstrom, Atkins’s aunt, said Wednesday afternoon while visiting Atkins’s parent’s home in Broken Bow. Dahlstrom, of Custer, S.D., added that Atkins had no history of heart complications, and said the investigation is ongoing to determine why his heart was enlarged. “He was a very healthy kid,” Wanda Dahlstrom said. Atkins’s friend called an ambulance after he fell unconscious. Emergency personnel attempted to resuscitate him and rushed him to Chadron Community Hospital. Atkins, a health sciences major who resided in Kent hall, died between 6:30-7 p.m., Dahlstrom said. Sterling Atkins’s parents, J.B. and Sonya Atkins of Broken Bow; his uncle, Jon Dahlstrom, also of Custer; and his grandfather, Maurice Atkins, also of Broken Bow, were moving his belongings from his room on Monday afternoon. “He just influenced so many people. He made an impression wherever he went,” Sonya Atkins said about her son, as she neared completion of loading the family’s two pickup trucks. “Just a great kid,” Jon Dahlstrom said. “It was a tragic health event and we’re all sad. It’s a loss for the college and for the family; those that knew him loved him.” see ATKINS, Page 3
