FACULTY ART SHOW ON DISPLAY IN MEMORIAL

Closer to Home is asking for volunteers from clubs and from the college to help serve in a soup kitchen one day a week for a month.

They are asking for groups of three to four students. This opportunity to give back looks great on resumes and applications.

Eight faculty members have art on display for the “Art in finity.” The art show runs from today until tomorrow in the Main Gallery of Memorial Hall. The gallery is open from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Richard Bird, Dewayne Gimeson, Nancy Sharps, are featured in this week’s edition.

UCLA speaker to present at CSC Jaycie Cheatham Reporter Laure Sinn confirmed that the speaker Jackson Katz from UCLA, will come to Chadron State to give a presentation on Title IX March 17.

Sinn is going to ask Faculty Senate to allow students to attend the 11 a.m. presentation for extra credit.

Senator Katrina Hurley reported that over 75 percent of the cameras on campus do not work. She is working with security to acquire cost estimates to fix the existing cameras or to buy new ones.

Treasurer Hannah Love reported $64,743.25 in unallo-

cated funds.

If anyone has any questions about the Student Senate’s minutes and agendas, you can call IT and have them add you to the student association.

Student Trustee Jacob Rissler reported that the F’real machine “will not become a F’reality.”

It is still advising month for students to get signed up for next year’s classes. Dr. Brust also wants to remind students that they can still meet with their advisers even after February.

The overall consensus is that students would like more free bowling nights. CAB members are working with SayaLanes to determine which nights will work; however, they may not line up with the existing free movie nights.

Josh Mayer, a student who is petitioning to be on Senate, spoke up about his disapproval of campus parking, specifically the limited amount of parking for National Guard students.

Mayer suggests that National Guard students get a different colored sticker to discern their vehicles from residents and commuters.

Though Vice President Taylor Strong agrees with Mayer, she informed him that Student Senate does not have any sway in this area of concern.

Rodeo club expresses concerns about new stadium Jaycie Cheatham Reporter At large CAB representative Sara Donnelly sent CAB Chair Andy Martin her letter of resignation.

Vice Chair of Finance Kelley McNabb reported $8,408.52 in unallocated funds.

The rodeo club was concerned about the talk of the new football stadium when the barn on campus “hasn’t even been finished,” but were quickly reassured that the football stadium renovations will not begin for several years and that the barn will take precedence.

Laure Sinn confirmed that the speaker Jackson Katz from UCLA will come to Chadron State to give a presentation on Title IX, March 17.

Sinn is going to set up a drawing at the event to foster more attendance.

CAB members are working with SayaLanes to determine when there will be more free bowling nights for students. The dates may not line up with the existing free movie nights.

BRIEF Police warn students against recent area car-thefts

The front desks of student resident halls have postcards available to students who would like to participate.

Grounds supervisor Lucinda Mays is still in need of group volunteers to help her with horticulture instillations around campus.

Mays has projects big and small, ranging from planting trees and shrubs, to spreading mulch. Anyone interested can contact Mays via her cell phone 308-430-4186. She will provide the tools.

Students must be able to work in two-hour sessions at a time.

Vice Chair of Records Stephanie Steele still needs updated packets, adviser agreements, and constitutions from several clubs. Not updating these files could affect the clubs’ budget hearings. The deadline to turn in paperwork is Feb. 27.

The Big Event staff is still requesting clubs’ pledge numbers.

Closer to Home, located on Main Street, is in need of volunteers.

Groups of three to four people would work three days a month to help get food to people in need. For more information contact Laure Sinn at lsinn@csc.edu or call Rachel Johnson (432-3393, ext. 120) A new club on campus, The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, is looking for participation.

The club will have their first meeting at 11 a.m., March 19 in Math and Science room 227.

Over the past two weeks the Chadron Police Department has taken numerous reports of unlocked vehicles being entered and items of value stolen. So far, all thefts have occurred during the night time hours.

Items that have been taken include laptops, electronics, stereos, billfolds, tools, and many other small items.

Chadron Police Department offers these tips: Don’t leave your car unlocked. Don’t leave your keys in your vehicle. Don’t leave your windows rolled down. Don’t leave valuables or personal property in your vehicle.

Don’t leave your vehicle running, especially while it is unattended or unlocked. Park in a well-lit area. Install an audible alarm system or a vehicle immobilizer system.

Students, businesses benefit from Career Fair Teri Robinson Photo Editor Students had an opportunity Friday to connect with different businesses in their field of study for a chance to apply for a job or internship during the spring Career Fair.

Fall 2014 semester was the first fall Career Fair, according to internship and career services director Deena Kennell, and helped set the tone for last week’s fair. Kennell “inherited” the fair and business list that includes about 300 businesses that are invited every year.

In previous year the fair is normally hosted in the Student Center Ballroom, but last semester and Friday’s fair was in the Student Center lobby and wound through the Ponderosa, Lakota, and Bordeaux rooms.

“It is comfortable in the lobby and more traffic goes through,” Kennell said.

The only negative Kennell noticed for the fair was the time of week, and plans on trying a different part of the week for Fall 2015 semester Career Fair.

There is on average 40 businesses each semester, with Friday’s turnout being 32 businesses.

“We’ll probably do one a semester and keep doing the fall one,” Kennell said.

The Career Fair is always a great opportunity for students to interact with potential employers and make a connection for after graduation.

“This is the only time in your life the job will come to you,” Kennell said.

Students will have another opportunity in fall to interact with area businesses.

Awards don’t define artists Emily Lisko Contributor

Vaccinate your children please

T

he en vogue discussion on social media in recent months has been vaccines and vaccinations. Like most discussions, there are two camps: pro-vaccine (see: sane, reasonable people), and anti-vaccine, (see: absolute nut cases, lunatics). It’s easy to see where we side.

The pro-vaccine crowd has mountains of scientific research and evidence on their side; they have demonstrated that most of the diseases which killed children in our grandparent’s and great grandparent’s generations, are now almost eradicated.

Measels, mumps, and rubella (MMR), are no longer the massive threats to public health that they were in centuries past, thanks to the work of tireless immunization and education programs.

Polio no longer cripples huge swaths of the population; children are no longer cut down in their prime and forced to live out the rest of their lives in iron lungs.

Smallpox was completely eradicated, and now only exists as samples in labs in the United States and Russia.

But the anti-vaccine crowd has the belief that vaccines cause autism. They also have... Wait... No, that’s all they have.

We can side with beliefs or we can side with science. This one isn’t some great philosophical question; vaccines save lives and have been proven to work.

Please be a sane, rational, reasonable and responsibly parent; vaccinate your children.

hen I took 20th century music history, we learned about a ground breaking composition entitled “ 4’33’’ “ by John Cage.

The interesting thing about this piece of music is that it is composed of four minutes and thirty-three seconds of a person sitting silently at a piano. It’s complete silence that the world of academia has felt noteworthy enough for students of music around the world to learn about.

When I took a 20th century humanities class, we learned about Fountain, a 1917 work of art attributed to Marcel Dushamp. What was this great piece of art exactly? A urinal that was put on display as a piece of art, and who’s to say it isn’t? Both of these pieces blew the lid off of societies expectation of what “art” is.

I know it’s been a while since the infamous Beck vs. Yeezus moment at the Grammys this year, but I think the reaction from the public has brought up some interesting discussions.

First off I have to disclose, I’m not a huge Beck fan. I like a couple of his songs, but for the most part I find his

music to be bland and boring. It’s just not my style.

That’s not to say he is not an artist or not talented, it’s just not my style. That’s also not to say Beyoncé isn’t an artist because she’s not exactly like Beck.

After Kanye West’s statements, many people came out with a list of reasons why Beck is a better or more worthy artist than Beyoncé; one reason being that he played all his own instruments and wrote all the tracks himself. Yes, this is impressive, but I would be hesitant to say that makes his work inherently better or more artistic than a collaborative musical experience. Duke Ellington, one of the most prolific American composers had a partner, Billy Strayhorn, who he worked with on most of his compositions. Most of the time, in live performance, whether

it’s a symphony or a rock band, music is a collaborative experience. Arguing that individual effort creates “better” or more “worthy” art than collaborative work is arguable on a case-by-case basis.

I’ve heard the argument that Beck plays twelve instruments and Beyoncé plays none. I will say it is impressive, but who is that say someone who plays six instruments is less of an artist than Beck, based on sheer numbers. Or that someone who plays one instrument at a far higher skill level than Beck is still less of an artist. And also, let’s not forget to give some credit to vocalists, after all, their voice is their “instrument.”

In the end, we can all make our own opinions about art and recognize that they are just that: opinions. Kanye West and the Grammys don’t determine what music is meaningful to you as art. Listen to what you like and don’t let others dictate what is and isn’t art. I’m not going to convince you that Beck is any less of an artist. He is, whether I personally like his music or not.

I’m only trying to say that if four minutes and thirty-three seconds of silence and a urinal are ground breaking enough pieces of art for us to learn about in college, Beyoncé and Beck are both artists.

They just use different palettes.

‘Just say no’ to nostalgia Hindsight may be 20/20, but romanticizing the past holds us back.

O

ne common trope that appears when a generation reaches an age of relative adult hood is the worship of the way things “used to be.” Anyone with children can attest to this, as can any college or high school student. The generation just beneath you has no clue, right? That noise they listen to isn’t music, man! They just don’t make food and drinks like they used to, everything’s over-processed. And what’s this garbage on TV, lately? Can you believe they don’t know who our obscure one-hit wonders and pop culture icons are? Man, if they had been born in our generation, they would never have cut it.

If I had a week, I couldn’t explain all the reasons why this mindset needs to die.

Imagine for a moment that your leg was just mangled in some horrible accident. Would you prefer access to medicine from the 1980’s or modern medicine? What about the research paper you’re putting off? Would you rather have to huff it from library to library and painstakingly hunt books down, or be able to have a wealth of peer-reviewed articles at your fingertips? We can blame technology all we want for the downfall of society, but technology is a tool, and we are to blame for how it’s used. It is a poor craftsman who blames his tools,

and besides, didn’t ignoring societal progress in favor of how things used to be cause the Dark Ages?

Nostalgia is a dangerous lens to look through. It allows us to focus completely on the best parts of what “used to be,” while managing to completely eclipse any of the bad. The problem is, memory is fickle. When people complain about society being glued to their smart phones, not only is it usually over social media (because irony is just lost on some), but they’re intentionally overlooking that certain characteristics have always been present in society.

Before smart phones, people used newspapers, books, or whatever version of portable music player at the time to shut the world out. Ignoring the people around you is not a new behavior, as any true anti-socialite will tell you. People are attached to their phones because they’re afraid to be alone with their thoughts for longer than a second, but don’t know how to talk to real people.

They need validation, they need connec-

tion, and they need it now. The feeling of isolation isn’t new. Technology is simply being used as a new Band-Aid for an age old wound.

To worship how things once were is to impede any chance we have of progressing as a society. People often hold this idyllic image of the past 100 years in their heads, like the turn of the last century was the ushering in of some blight on our country. Do you really think our peak as a culture was during a time where people with a different skin pigment had to fight to drink from the same fountain as a lighter person? Are you really longing for a time where the highest spot in a career for a woman was a secretary? I’m sure the Vietnam, Gulf, and Iraq Wars are all conveniently left out of these delusion-induced paradises. I hate to break it to everyone, but Grunge music and 90’s cartoons were not God’s gift to the world, and America was not founded as a Christian nation.

Challenge your nostalgia: go back and listen to old music, play your old video games, watch old movies, and see what you think with a different perspective.

Quit blaming technology with an infinite capability of bringing us together for your own shortcomings. Rather than obsessing over some make-believe golden age from the past or worshiping the far-off innovations promised us by Kickstarter campaigns, we could try something really novel like living our lives as they come to us.

Mankind is still the master of its tools Broc Anderson Contributor

I

n response to Richard Heule’s column, “Men Have Become Tools of Their Tools” (The Eagle, Feb. 6). I wish to maybe shed a different light on technological convenience in our time. Would you rather entertain your 4year-old with a puzzle piece where pieces can get lost and be a huge mess or a tablet that is one piece and has the ability to turn down the volume on the activity in your visit to the burger chain restaurant? Technology is at our hands, not driving mankind to its knees, or the couch.

Sure we have a problem with kids playing too many games and having devices that can often consume our days, but we have other uses besides enjoyment. Technology is everywhere and it does not have to be digital or electronic. Technology can be a pencil or a piece of chalk. Trying to generalize technology as a “bad” thing is not the purpose of technological advances. Technology is meant to solve a problem.

I am currently enrolled in a course where

we are discussing this issue that Robert Putnam has brought to attention in his article about American society becoming disengaged from civic society. Although there are a few points to his argument that help him, his blame on technology, television specifically, is not examined very well.

Putnam uses this aspect of his argument and states that much of our civic duties have declined immensely. But he does not take in account for how technology connects us to the rest of the world. We can now fly across the Atlantic in a matter of hours rather than taking two months at sea like Columbus did. How can someone not marvel at this fact?

Could the Civil Rights movement in the 60s have been as successful without television? We can only guess, but since the invention, we can put some pieces together for a decent hypothesis. It all started with the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, with President Abraham Lincoln. Although African-Americans were free, they did not get the equal treatment the law had promised. The Civil Rights movement did not come until 100 years later and came with at a faster pace than ever before. Television did not become relevant until the 1950s and more so the 1960s. With television, Americans could not only read and hear about the rest of the country, but see exactly what many of the reporters see. We are able to make a better emotional connection when we see events unfold for ourselves, even if we are a world away.

As a future teacher, I will use technology to expand the four walls of my classroom.

What would our classrooms be like without the internet, computers, or even televisions? Sure they used to do it in a not so distant past, but now-a-days kids can access the library from their own homes or dorms.

Doing research projects the old way going through card catalogs was a process in itself, but now we simply type in a general name and find information within a second from anywhere in the world. Videos and research projects are not the real thing and nothing will ever replace physical experiences. I personally can relate to doing a research project and having an in-country experience in last semester’s Cuba Libre course and trip.

But without a computer and the Internet, I would have visited a country without really knowing much about it.

So what would we do without our technology? Isn’t it human nature to want to make our lives easier? Sure we can often use these technologies too much at simplest level with mindless video games, but our society as a whole with technology has allowed for more individual expression and freedom. It’s fair to say technology is not as bad as some make it out to be, it just depends how and why we use it. We can all thank the parents that use these tools to keep their kids under control in public places. It’s your choice and the tools are at your disposal.

Camera failures a cause for serious concern Richard Heule III Columnist This week, for the first time since I’ve started school at Chadron State, I decided to attend a Student Senate meeting.

Honestly, I’m glad that I did, because it shed some light on a huge problem.

This year has been the year for raising awareness of sexual assault and how you can prevent it. There are cameras in the residence halls, so if there were an incident, there should be some form of evidence, right? Right?

During this week’s Senate meeting, some new information came to light.

Senator At Large Katrina Hurley reported that after her conversations with campus police, she found out that approximately seventy-five percent of the video cameras in residence halls do not work. That’s right; there is a seventyfive percent chance that the camera in your residence hall isn’t even turned on.

I want to thank Senator Hurley and the rest of Student Senate for bringing this to public attention. Considering past events on campus, it is imperative that

we raise awareness of this so the rest of the student body knows.

I normally don’t get passionate about things on campus, but this? This is complete and utter bullshit. The worst part is we don’t know how long those cameras have been off. For all I know, I could have gotten jumped by a group of thugs in my hallway, and there wouldn’t have been any evidence of it aside from my testimony. How can you expect people to come to this school when we’re not even sure if we’re safe or not?

Not only that, but how can you just let the cameras sit there? Had there been a real emergency, maybe you would be actually able to catch the perpetrator. I don’t know how many students will really hear about this, let alone give a damn, but I hope this will be something we can all be passionate about.

If this school really does care about preventing sexual assault and not just about making the school look good to potential students, they will do the smart thing and actually turn the cameras on.

We shouldn’t have to wait for someone to get brutally assaulted to get the point across.

The men’s basketball team will lose five seniors at the end of the season: Evan Brooks, guard of Ontario, California; Christopher Smith, guard of Pasadena, California; Kendrick Holliman, forward of Spanish Fort, Alabama; Michael Safer, center of Elizabeth, Colorado; and Josiah Lee, point guard of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Head Coach Brett Bargen commented about each of the seniors.

“Brooks is one of the best shooters in the RMAC from both the free-throw and 3-point lines,” Bargen said.

“He has become an offensive weapon that other teams have to game plan for.

Holliman and Safer have played four years at CSC. “The basketball program and Coach Bargen brought me to Chadron,” Safer said. “I knew that I would play teams close to home in Colorado that my parents could come to.”

After college, Safer plans to look for a “career in the finance world,” somewhere where he and his wife can both find a job. He said he would prefer to be in Colorado.

Holliman plans to be the best father he can be and look into a professional basketball career, he said.

Safer said he is passionate about basketball because of his love “for Jesus Christ. I love the ability to compete for my brothers on the court, and to glorify God.” Holliman said he draws inspiration from Michael Jordan and he said, “Knowing I get better every time I touch the floor drives (my passion).”

He said he is inspired by his grandpa and brother.

Smith said he wants to be “successful in my career choice, have money, power, and respect.”

“My plan for the future involves basketball,” Brooks said. “Whether playing professionally somewhere or just in the adult league downtown.” He said he also wants to pursue a career in sports broadcasting. Brooks said he is inspired by his mom and his late father, along with “the greats like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.”

“I’m happy that I got to build lifelong friendships with my teammates through these two years that I’ve been here,” Lee said. “A few of those guys are my brothers and blood wouldn’t make us any closer.”

Guzman redshirted her freshman year at CSC, making this her fourth year here.

She will go on block in the fall and student teaching in the spring. She had to make “a tough decision,” Guzman said.

“Being able to play college basketball at this level was my dream for as long as I can remember,” she said.

“The girls that I have met along the way will always be my family. Coach Connealy has done so much for me, and I know that I have someone who will always be there to support me in my future.

“Being a student athlete in college is not easy, and being able to balance your social life, school, and basketball is a huge challenge,” she said.

Guzman, a secondary math education major, plans to teach and coach basketball somewhere in her future.

She said her passion for the game comes from teammates, coaches and family.

Simonton also played four years for the Eagles after she redshirted at Fresno City College in California.

“I have gained a lot of life experience which will help me in the future,” Simonton said about her time at CSC. “I have a solid group of people whom I will remain close with for life.”

Simonton said she struggled learning how to communicate with her teammates but she said, “I think over the four years, my ability to talk to teammates has improved and allows me to help our coaching staff.”

As a secondary science education major, Simonton plans to teach and coach in her future.

Simonton says she draws inspiration from her mom, and she plays for “the little fifth grader who dreamed big when it came to basketball.”

“I am very thankful for my coaches, teammates, but especially my parents,” Guzman said. “They have been there for my basketball career since third grade, and have made a lot of sacrifices to always support me.”

Eagles defeat CCU, fall on senior night Preston Goehring Distribution Manager Chadron State capitalized on a lights out first half to fly past Colorado Christian University, 82-69, Friday, at the Chicoine Events Center.

Both teams shot exceptionally well in the first half. The Eagles shot just under 58 percent while the Cougars shot 56 percent.

CSC also sank 7 of 12 from beyond the arc, four of them from senior Evan Brooks, of Ontario, California.

Eight players found their way on the scoreboard for the Eagles. Brooks and Kendrick Holliman, senior of Spanish Fort, Alabama, led all scorers with 19 points each.

Seniors Josiah Lee, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Christopher Smith, of Pasadena, California, each chipped in 12. Lee also added six assists and seven steals.

“We shared the ball and attacked the basket aggressively but on balance,” Holliman said. “When the help defense packed the lane on drives, it opened up 3-point baskets for us.”

The Eagles kept the offense going in the second half, but also picked up their defensive game. They held the Cougars to just 33 percent from the field.

“Each senior kept telling one another, ‘one play at a time,’ we didn’t need to score as much as long as we played great defense,” Holliman said.

The first half was just a prelude to the second for CSC. Continuing to shoot lights out, the Eagles improved to 62.5 percent from the field. Sharing the ball proved to be effective for CSC, finishing with 19 assists.

Herl competed against nearly 70 competitors at the South Dakota State University Indoor Classic. She won the weight throw with a toss of 58-4 1/2. Herl also placed seventh in the shotput with a distance of 42-8 3/4.

Softball team prepares for conference play Evan Brooks Reporter The Chadron State College softball team was on the road again this weekend in hopes of picking up some wins against another group of tough opponents in the West Texas Woodward Invitational.

Friday, the Eagles matched up against Tarleton State University and Midwestern State University, respectively.

The Eagles dug themselves into a hole both games, allowing five runs to the opposition in the first inning of each.

Against Tarleton State, the Eagles managed to climb out of the hole, scoring six unanswered runs to take a 6-5 lead going into the final inning. But Tarleton State came up big when it mattered, holding the Eagles scoreless in the inning and following with a three-run homerun to close the game out with a 9-6 victory.

Despite the loss, the Eagles received a handful of production from a number of players. Casey Polk, senior catcher of Golden, Colorado, and Courtney Lecher, sophomore shortstop of Fort Collins, Colorado, each went 3-for-4 to lead the offense. Lecher also contributed two RBIs for the Eagles, while Jessica Eatmon, senior outfielder of Broomfield, Colorado, hit a two-run homerun.

Midwestern State’s quick start set the tone for the game.

The Eagles were not able to respond like in the previous game.

Chadron State fell, 15-7, in a six-inning game that Midwestern State controlled from start to finish.

Saturday, the Eagles returned to the field to face Texas Woman’s University and defending national champion and No. 1 ranked West Texas A&M University.

The Eagles took off to an early 3-2 lead after the first inning against TWU, but the Pioneers exploded for an 11-run second inning, scoring three more in the following inning to take a 16-3 lead through three.

The fourth inning brought a bit of new life to the Eagles, who battled with resilience to make the game interesting. They scored three runs in the inning and held TWU scoreless. The Eagles followed that inning with an eight-run inning to cut the deficit to 17-14 at the end of the fifth.

Despite the battle back, the Pioneers closed the game outscoring the Eagles 5-1 in the final two innings to take a 22-15 victory.

“I took away to never give up when you are down, because we were down 11 runs at one point and made a huge comeback and were close to winning the game,” Lecher said. She led the Eagles with another 3-for-4 effort, scoring three runs to go with three RBIs. The Eagles struggled against the defending national champions, falling in five, 16-0. West Texas A&M’s good pitching, coupled with CSC’s lack of the same was primarily responsible.

On the final day of the Invitational, CSC looked to snatch a couple of wins against Cameron University and No. 11-ranked

Angelo State University.

Against Cameron, the Eagles grabbed an early 1-0 lead after the first inning, but failed to score again until the final frame.

Cameron was persistent and took a 2-1 lead over the Eagles in the fourth.

Cameron scored four runs off three doubles in the sixth inning to put the Eagles away. Chadron State made a quick run at a comeback in the final inning, but could only manage two more runs and Cameron would go on to win 6-3.

Polk went a perfect 3-for-3, and Taylor Bauer, sophomore infielder of Rapid City, South Dakota, also pitched in three base hits.

The Eagles ended non-conference play against No. 11 Angelo State University.

The Rams let their presence be known, scoring six runs off their first six batters, and adding two more runs in the second inning to take an 8-0 lead. They would go on to score three more runs in the fourth and shut the Eagles out in a five innings run rule.

“I feel like we need to work on little things,” Lecher said.

“We really don’t have any major things to work on, but one thing I did notice from the past two weekends is communication. We need to always be talking, whether defensively or offensively.”

The Eagles will begin RMAC play against Colorado State University­-Pueblo and Western New Mexico University this weekend in Silver City, New Mexico.

“I just think we played more motivated than ever before and finally understood that we are more successful when we share the ball,” Brooks said. “When we’re all on the same page and giving a max effort, we’re a tough bunch of guys on both ends of the floor.”

Saturday, the Eagles faced off against Colorado School of Mines in a nail-biting game. CSC fell to the Orediggers, 73-72.

The first half went back and forth, ending with the scores tied at 37. Chadron State kept even with the Orediggers in almost every aspect of the game. Mines shot 46 percent in the first half while CSC held the edge at 47 percent. Each team shot 50 percent from 3-point range.

The second half was just as exciting as the first, going down to the last second. With just over eight minutes to play, the Orediggers took an eight-point lead, threatening to run away with the game. However CSC refused to go away, taking off on an 18-7 run. With just under a second, Holliman slammed a dunk home, giving Chadron State a three-point advantage. Mines answered with a deep three, tying the score with 11 seconds left.

On the next possession, Lee hit one free throw, but missed the second. Junior Davante McCallum, of Miami, grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled on the put back attempt. McCallum hit the second attempt, giving the Eagles a 2-point lead. With three seconds left, the Orediggers drove down the court, finding Joe Dellenbach, junior of Gilcrest, Colorado, on the wing, to hit the game winning three as time expired.

“The atmosphere was really intense and a lot of fun,” Lee said. “There were some tears in the locker room, but we felt all right knowing that we left everything on the floor” Holliman led the Eagles with 24 points and eight rebounds. Smith and Lee added 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Eagles smash school records at Indoor Classic Collin Brook Reporter The Chadron State College track and field team once again broke school records Friday and Saturday at the South Dakota State University Indoor Classic in Brookings.

Both of the Eagles’ nationally-ranked long jumpers won their events on Friday. Stachia Reuwsaat, sophomore of Black Hawk, South Dakota, won the long jump at 19 feet, 4 1/2 inches, and Damarcus Simpson, freshman of Lafayette, Georgia, hit 24-5 1/2 for the win. Simpson also was second in the 60-meter dash in 6.79 seconds, Saturday.

The Eagle throwers also continued to perform well for the season. Mel Herl, junior of Eaton, Colorado, won the women’s weight throw against nearly 70 contestants with a throw of 58-4 1/2. Kyle McCarthy, senior of Aurora, improved his career best by a foot, when he hit 53-2 3/4 to place second among more than 50 competitors.

Tiffany Thomas, junior of Kingston, Jamaica, beat her own school record for the 400 at 56.58, easily winning the event. Thomas also broke another record in the 4x400, running alongside Shelby Bozner, junior of Rock Springs, Wyoming; Rochelle Nelson, senior of Kingston, Jamaica; and Shelby Guy, senior of Akron, Colorado. The team ran the event in 3:51.98, shattering the original Chadron State record by 6.5 seconds.

The men’s 4x400 posted the school’s second fastest time ever at 3:18.94. The team of Jazz Bozner, senior of Rock Springs, Wyoming; Lane Higgins, freshman of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; Zerek Jones, junior of La Junta, Colorado; and Martin Moriel, junior of Phoenix, Arizona; placed sixth, while the women’s team placed fourth.

The final Chadron State record to fall this weekend was to pole vaulter Skyler Hoopes, senior of Lusk, Wyoming, who vaulted 15-9, breaking the previous record by two inches. He finished fourth in the event.

Next up for the Eagle’s track team is the University of Nebraska Tune-Up, which starts Friday in Lincoln. The Eagles will also compete in the Colorado Mines Joe Davies Open, Saturday in Golden.

Women finish home season, split 2 games Christopher Smith Reporter The Chadron State Eagles women’s basketball team split the final two home games this weekend, in RMAC matchups against Colorado Christian University and Colorado School of Mines.

Friday, the Eagles took on CCU and fell short in a 54-42 loss. The Eagles struggled against the zone, shooting poorly from the field going 0 of 10 from beyond the arc along with 21 turnovers for the game.

This was CSC lowest point total this season shooting only 22 percent from the field.

Freshman center, Maka Daysh, of Tauranga, New Zealand, dropped 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, recording first double-double of her career. She also shot a perfect 12 of 12 from the line.

Junior guard, Stephanie Knowles, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, also filled up the stat sheet, recording nine

points, six rebounds, and five steals.

Saturday, the Eagles took on Mines for their senior night in their final home game this season, winning 69-63 in a nail bitter. With that win, the Eagles won five of their last seven games in RMAC play.

In the opening half, the Eagles never led against Mines, going into halftime down, 30-26. Early in the second half, the Eagles came out of the gates swinging, grabbing their first lead 33-32.

From there the game went back and forth with six ties and 12 lead changes until the final two minutes, when the Eagles seemed to tighten up defensively.

Knowles led the Eagles with 19 points. Senior guard, Kate Simonton, of Bakersfield, California, chipped in with 14 points.

Allegria Chisom, junior forward of Wichita, Kansas, added 13 points, two blocks, and two steals.

The Eagles will hit the road this week taking on University of ColoradoColorado Springs, Friday, and Colorado State University Pueblo, Saturday.

Maroon 5, an American pop rock band, released their fifth album, ”V”, on August 29, 2014.

Since its release, the album has been featured as the number one album on Billboard’s Top 200. The debut single on the album, “Maps”, gained fame as the first single in 18 years to reach the highest level of the Top 40 radio charts. The single also took a top 100 spot on 18 different country’s top charts.

“V” is an album with a mixture of slow and upbeat songs but they all have a 1980’s spin on them.

There are songs about cheating, new found love, break ups, and finding “the one.”

This album is one of my favorite albums and has been since it was released. It is one of the most compelling and touching albums that Maroon 5 has released so far.

The songs can take you from dancing around your room to singing a slow, soulful, song in the shower.

“New Love” is a track on the album that brings about the idea of diving into commitment and being in a new relationship. It also reinforces the “honeymoon” phase of the relationship. When Levine sings, “But if I ever let you down, would it kill you to forgive me, this is a new love,” he is showing that when you are in a new relationship you have to know that your partner is not going to be perfect all of the time.

One of the songs on the album that relates to students here on campus is “Coming Back For You.” The song opens with the line, “Looking at the same sky that we used to live under. Are you thinking about the love that I took from us?” This line applies to students on campus that are in long distance relationships. They left someone that they care about

The song makes it clear that everyone, no matter how old, is wandering through the galaxy trying to find themselves. Levine asks, “But are we all lost stars trying to light up the dark?”

This album is a huge stepping stone for Maroon 5 and their music career. They started out as a small band that debuted in 2002 and they have now grown into an internationally recognized band. They won their first Grammy in 2005 and have been growing ever since.

I personally love all of their work especially this album and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Maroon 5 and all of their fans.

‘Art Infinity’ shows artistic diversity of faculty members Eight faculty members showcase the distinctiveness of their mediums in Memorial Hall Hannah Clark Web Editor Richard Bird: An artistic sabbatical of sorts drew Bird to glass. After finishing his Masters of Fine Art in Ceramics, focusing on metal processes on ceramics, Bird stayed for an entire semester and worked solely with glass. Under the tutelage of predominate glass-master Vernon Brjacha, this fiery art caught the young artist’s attention, and it went on to be his principle medium.

A series of low-slung, black and white pieces are the newest works Bird created in his glass studio.

“I always think the most recent project is the most interesting,” Bird said of his creation. Bird made the wide, urn-like vases by experimenting with glasses of varying melting points. The when the soft glass is spun, it widens and tapers at various points, creating

the ovular shape. These works sit along side glowing vases, covered in dripped webbing, and delicately-fluted rain drops, with re-dipped bases.

Bird contributed the largest number of works to the show, with 15 glass vases on display.

About five of the featured pieces were in-class demos, and Bird was pleased with the results.

After a one-year jaunt in 1977, Bird joined the CSC faculty in 1988, making this his 27th year Photo by Teri Robinson teaching Chadron students.

In reality, the human eye can’t freeze the traveling patterns of light. It can, however, appreciate Gimeson’s surreal photos.

Three of his pieces are sets of four photos, all apparently displaying the same image. They are all minutely different, though, lightening or blurring depending on the exposure or shutter speed Gimeson used. This gives the images a faded-memory like quality.

Gimeson has worked at Chadron for 25 years and is the publications specialist for the College Relations department.

Nancy Sharps: Sharps teaches at CSC with focuses in design fundamentals, watercolor, and sculpting None of Sharps watercolors are featured in the faculty art show, but two of her sculptures are on display. Both pieces are rusticlooking carvings, on of a leaf-covered planter and the other of a chubby beaver. The latter, entitled “Bucky,” was Sharps’ favorite contribution to the show.

As an avid gardener, Sharps’ inspiration often comes from nature, and her rough concrete materials reinforce the earthy elegance of her creations. “Bucky” the beaver was actually composed of left-over construction materials, vestiges of CSC’s recent building projects. Sharps’ fluency with available materials extends back to her education, while pursuing her M.A. at the University of Idaho. Sharps would procure oversized rolls of paper from the nearby paper mill, and with her students, sculpt from the giant sheets.

Sharps’ work has always appreciated nature, and her recent creations are no exception.
