SENATE DISCUSSES REVISION TO BYLAWS, CAB PREPARES FOR HOMECOMING EVENTS Mariah Busch Reporter Kelli Bowlin Reporter Six thousand dollars toward “Release Live” will be voted on during next week's Senate meeting. “Release Live,” formerly known as “Release,” is focusing on local talent this year and performing as a concert. Karl Minor, director of “Release Live,” made the request based on the total expenses of last year's show. The $6,000 will help cover costumes, supplies, technicians, extra costs, and food for the performers. “Release Live” is scheduled for March 22.

Senate Vice President of Finances Ashley Swanson resigned. A new treasurer will be determined at next week's meeting.

Senate President Jacob Rissler advised Senate to postpone a motion on a bylaw to the Constitution. This bylaw will allow Senator-atLarge Sean Munger to remain on Senate despite his hourly credit load. The current Constitution states, "Senators shall be enrolled in at least twelve hours of undergraduate credit, or at least nine hours of graduate credit at Chadron State College," which would disqualify Munger. The bylaw will enforce an exception to Senators who are in the final stages of their degree. The bylaw will be voted on next week.

A project to update the furniture in the Student Center was addressed. Rissler suggested a group of students design several layout options that are then voted on by the

student body. This project may be funded by revenue bond since the Student Center is a revenue bond building. Rissler stated that, "if revenue bond funds aren't available, Senate should provide for the project."

Two hundred dollars was approved to Coordinator of Student Activities Laure Sinn.

The $200 will fund T-shirt for volunteers during Scholastic Day, which is scheduled for April 4.

Tuesday’s Campus Activities Board meeting was short, sweet, and to the point. The CAB Chair Lane Swedberg’s, report included the topic of Homecoming, the date for which has been set for October 11. Homecoming themes that have been suggested include, but are not limited to, Wild West, Jungle, Candy Land, and Greek themes.

Upcoming events include The Pit Events Mr. and Mrs. CSC pageant, which starts at 9 p.m., tonight.

There has been some confusion regarding the start time of the event, but it was stressed that it begins at 9 p.m. as opposed to the advertised 7 p.m. Actor Jeffery Tambor, who is known for his popular roles in Arrested Development and The Hangover, will be speaking at Memorial Hall at 7 p.m., Tuesday. The International Club’s Food Tasting Party will be this Saturday, and tickets are still available for this event.

The next mandatory CAB meeting is on March 4 and each club’s CAB representative is urged to be present.

International students cooking up food, entertainment for food tasting party This Saturday is the International Food Tasting Party in the Student Center Ballroom. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the party begins at 6 p.m.

The International Food Tasting will include recipes from Ethiopia, Togo, Russia, Japan, America, Jamaica, Vietnam, China, Mali, Germany, France, and Brazil.

It will also include entertainment from the United States, and highlights of Hawaii, Ethiopia, China, Togo, Japan, Russia and

Singapore.

Tickets are required for attendance, cost $7 for students; $12 for adults; $10 for seniors, and children seven and under eat for free. Tickets can be bought from the International Club members or by emailing Michele Rikenbach, records assistant registrar, at mrikenbach@csc.edu.

“We have a lot of new recipes and this year we have more American students,” Rikenbach said.

START advisers urge students to register for summer, fall classes February being advising month has been full of events for current and perspective students to register for the summer and fall 2014 semesters, and other events such as the Back on Track program for current students in academic probation.

Monday was the Admissions Eagle Open House, which included campus tours, academic advising, a free lunch, presentations

by Admissions, Financial Aid, and Housing, and a student panel.

As advising month reaches its final week, students are being encouraged to register for next semester. The week of Monday, 24 through Feb. 28 will be filled with registra-

tion events. The registration events start Monday in the START Office from 7:30 a.m.4:30 p.m., then in the Student Center from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and from 4-6 p.m., Tuesday. The next event will take place in the library from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Wednesday. An event will be in the Gold Room from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Thursday, and 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Friday will be back in the START Office.

“We encourage students to meet with their academic advisors prior to attending a registration event, however advisors will be available at the central locations to assist and a reminder can be found in your eaglemail,” START adviser Danielle Lecher, said.

Retired colonel shares his plans for Congress Jaycie Chatham Contributor Retired Colonel Tom Brewer spoke about his campaign for the Republican nomination for Nebraska’s Third Congressional District.

Brewer grew up on a farm north of Gordon and is the son of Ross Brewer and Alice DeWolf Brewer, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. Brewer graduated from Gordon High School in 1977 and went on to Doane College where he began his military career, participating in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), and eventually become Commander of his Unit. While at Doane, Brewer also ran track, cross country, and participated in the student government, serving as Senator and vice president. Brewer graduated college in 1984.

After several years of military education and experience, Brewer was sent to Afghanistan in May 2003 to take command of the training of the Afghan National Army. During this assignment Brewer was shot six times during an ambush. As a result, he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

In August 2005, Brewer was selected to command the first Task Force in re-

sponse to Hurricane Katrina.

In January 2010, Brewer was on an assignment as an Afghan Ministry Interior Advisor for U.S. CENTCOM Counter Narcotics mission in Afghanistan to stop the drug production and trafficking. A grenade hit his vehicle and he was severely wounded forcing him to retire from military duty after 36 years of service.

“After I retired, I wanted to hunt bears,” Brewer said. “But you can’t get paid to hunt bears.”

He then chose to become more active in politics. Brewer’s opponent is current Representative Adrian Smith, going on his eighth year and has nothing to show for it according to Brewer.

“Seven years is enough time to get your act together,” he said.

“I am prepared to work toward common sense solutions that are good for Nebraska, because they are good for America,” Brewer said in his Position Statement.

Some areas he plans to address are to restore veteran’s rights, to amend or repeal unnecessary government regulations, to protect the sanctity of human life, and implement an effective immigration policy without amnesty, among many other issues.

Susan Skyrm, professor at the University of South Dakota, Vermilion, plays a Latin American piece during her Valentine’s Day performance, Friday.

Music filled the Memorial Hall Auditorium on Friday evening as piano soloist, Susanne Skyrm, a professor from the University of South Dakota, Vermilion, performed a variety of Latin American musical numbers.

She was originally scheduled to perform at Chadron State College in October; however, due to Winter Storm Atlas hitting the panhandle, the concert was postponed. During this time, Skyrm was stranded in Chadron a few days, which allowed for some students to get a little one-on-one time with her. This was especially beneficial to the piano students.

“The campus benefits by getting a new perspective from someone who is familiar with the area,” James Margetts, music associate professor and music teacher’s national association sponsor said.

“It helps give us healthy, friendly relationships with outside sources.”

This time around the weather was cooperative and about 100 students attended the Valentine’s Day concert.

Skyrm showed off her talents with the Spanish

piano music she acquired from her vacation last spring in Spain. Her performance included four sonatas, 12 variations on the theme of Chopin, two nocturnes, and performed two other numbers.

Skyrm has been performing for more than 30 years. Along with mastering the standard piano she also can play on some of the earliest invented pianos, such as the fortepiano. Spanish and Latin American keyboard music is one of her passions and she has even recorded a CD of eighteenthcentury Spanish and Portuguese keyboard music.

Skyrm has degrees in piano performance from the College of Idaho, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of Colorado, Boulder. At the University of South Dakota, she was the first to receive the University of South Dakota’s College of Fine Arts Biennial Distinguished Professor Award in 2006.

The event was sponsored by CSC’s MTNA chapter. The MTNA chapter on campus is also a branch of the national MTNA, which is a service and professional organization. The organization is used to provide teachers and students professional opportunities and to give them knowledge of how to become better teachers.

Affordable Care Act is in fact affordable Leala A. Lewis Contributor

L

ast December, the topic of President Obama’s Affordable Care Act came up while traveling with a friend.

As the truck’s tires roared over the blacktop, drowning Springsteen’s, “Born in the USA,” I voiced concerns regarding the ACA’s potential to overload a family’s finances and received in return, a recommendation to personally research the Affordable Care Act. Over the next two days of digging for information, I found the ACA is affordable for most. The keys to ACA’s affordability are the premium tax credits, the cost-sharing subsidies, and the expansion of Medicaid in some states.

Premium tax credits are available to United States citizens, legal immigrants, and legal immigrants who have not met the five-year citizenship requirement to apply for Medicaid.

The Kaiser Family Foundation, a selfproclaimed non-partisan, non-profit organization that focuses on major health issues, states on their website, “(Premium tax credits) provide refundable and advanceable premium credits to eligible individuals and families with incomes between 100-400%

Federal Poverty Level to purchase insurance through the Exchanges. The premium credits will be tied to the second lowest cost silver plan in the area and will be set on a sliding scale such that the premium contributions are limited to the following percentages of income for specified income levels,” those percentages of income ranging from 2 percent up to 9.5 percent.

The Internal Revenue Service states, “The premium tax credit is refundable so taxpayers who have little or no income tax liability can still benefit. The credit also can be paid in advance to a taxpayer’s insurance company to help cover the cost of premiums.” This can happen after submitting the appropriate forms, of course!

On the Kaiser Family Foundation website, Michelle Andrews states, “The federal cost-sharing subsidies essentially increase the insurance company’s share of covered benefits, resulting in reduced out-of-pocket spending for lower-income consumers. In addition, people who earn 250 percent of the federal poverty level or less will also have their maximum out-of-pocket spending capped at lower levels than will be the case for others who buy plans on the exchange.”

Regarding the expansion of Medicaid, the Kaiser Family Foundation website states, “The ACA, as enacted, expands Medicaid to nearly all adults at or below 138% of the

federal poverty level (FPL) as of Jan 1. 2014.

This expansion, however, was effectively made a state option as a result of the Supreme Court ruling on the constitutionality of the ACA.” The Kaiser website also states, “As of Oct. 24, 2013, 26 states, including D.C., are moving forward with the expansion, while the remaining 25 states are not moving forward at this time. There is no deadline for states to adopt the expansion, and several states are still actively considering it.”

With the above provisions, most people living in the United States will find the ACA affordable, however as the Kaiser site states, “In states that do not expand Medicaid, nearly five million poor, uninsured adults will fall into a ‘coverage gap.’”

These individuals would have been eligible for Medicaid if their state had chosen to expand coverage. In the absence of the expansion, they remain ineligible for Medicaid and do not earn enough to qualify for premium tax credits to purchase Marketplace coverage, which begin at 100 percent FPL. Most of these individuals have very limited coverage options and are likely to remain uninsured.

I almost fell into the trap of listening to opinion rather than facts. The truth is that President Obama’s plan for healthcare reform is affordable for most.

EDITORIAL–THE EAGLE’S VIEW

Nothing that is something comes from nothing

W

e all invest our efforts into things that are important to us. There are those who paint, those who perform music, those who participate in sports, those who do other things, and some who do everything above. We invest our efforts into these things because we wish to better ourselves at them.

Every once in a while though, someone who invests less in one of our areas of interests achieves higher levels of success. For example, have you ever studied extensively for an exam only to watch someone who did not study achieve a higher grade than you? Most likely the answer is yes; this is unfortunate, but such is life.

So what are the important things in life, and what is the best method to achieving them?

Should we risk not putting effort into something because of these uncommon occurrences? No. Though the undeserving succeed every once in a while, a good rule to follow is this: the more effort you put into something, the more likely you are to achieve higher levels of success.

In regards to what the important things in life are, everyone’s set of answers is unique, so there is no definitive, universal set. Because you are the person who knows you the best, advice to adhere to is self-discover what is important.

After determining what is important, whether it be painting, music, sports, or studies, the best method to achieving success is to follow the rule.

Painting a masterpiece, performing a musical piece almost without flaw, and breaking sports records are all works of determination.

While these achievements are also works of other things - such as, but not limited to, skill and chance - success commonly comes down to what is in you. You have to grow. You have to continue to push yourself.

Whatever you do, make sure you find importance in it. After that, make sure you put the effort into it to achieve higher levels of success.

Remember, nothing that is something does not commonly come from nothing.

Don’t mix yourself with alcohol illegally Danny Reynaga Contributor

I

n a study done by Monitoring the Future in 2011, over 70 percent of 18 years olds had tried alcohol at least once. From the ages of 18-20 years old, nearly 50 percent admitted to consuming alcohol in the last thirty days.

These numbers may seem familiar to the average student at Chadron State College, but Nebraska is clear about the repercussions of breaking the law. In Nebraska, the legal age to consume alcohol or have in one’s “…possession or physical control…” is 21.

Nebraska does carve out some exceptions to the minimum drinking age in Neb. Rev. Stat. 53-180.02. Here, when the underage drinking is “…a part of a bona fide religious rite, ritual, or ceremony or in his or her permanent place of residence,” it is legal. This exception allows for parents to give their children alcohol as long as the alcohol is maintained within the parameters of the home.

However, this does not give parents the right to serve anyone other than their own children. For more information about underage drinking in the home, visit socialhost.drugfree.org.

So what if you are an underage student here at CSC, and you decide to party it up. And what if you are caught consuming or possessing alcohol?

Nebraska state laws punish those that

are 18 harsher than those 19-20 years old.

If you are 18 or younger and are caught drinking you will be guilty of a class III misdemeanor, which means you can be fined up to $500, sentenced up to three months imprisonment, have your license suspended for 30 days, and be mandated to attend alcohol education classes (Neb. Rev. Stat. 53-181).

If you are caught a second to third time, your punishment extends the suspension of your license and tacks on hours of community service.

For those 19-20 years old, you may not have your license suspended but you will still be guilty of a class III misdemeanor with fines and/or imprisonment possible.

Thinking of giving a minor some of your giggle juice? Well if “…serious bodily injury or death to any person resulted and was proximately caused by a minor’s (a) consumption of the alcoholic liquor provided or (b) impaired condition which, in whole or in part, can be attributed to the alcoholic liquor provided” you are felon, guilty of a class IIIA felony.

(Neb. Rev. Stat. 53-180.05).

Bottom line is if you are not 21, don’t drink. And if you are 21, drink responsibly and don’t give any of your hooch to the kids.

In either case, it is not worth the longterm repercussions you will be given that can ruin your future as an educator, law enforcer, or any other public service career.

‘Guise of the Wolf’ incident shows company to be inept

I

f you are an avid reader of my columns, you might remember when I wrote an article about a little game called Day One: Garry’s Incident and the massive backlash that occurred when the developer, Wild Games Studio, tried to get a negative review of their game off the internet.

The tactics they employed were childish, and resulted in one of the biggest flame wars that had ever

occurred on YouTube and Twitter. However, as of this week, the Garry’s Incident case can’t even being to compare to what happened when a YouTuber known as TotalBiscuit posted a review of a game called “Guise of the Wolf.”

Now if you’ve read about the Garry’s Incident case, then you would guess that the scenario here is the same. You are correct. A review was posted on YouTube of the game courtesy of John Bain, who is better known by his internet moniker, TotalBiscuit, The Cynical Brit.

His review of the game was pretty brutal. He talked for half an hour about every single thing that was wrong with the game. In response, the game company who created Guise of the Wolf, FUN Creators, issued a copyright strike against Bain in an attempt to take the review off the internet. Bain

didn’t take too kindly to this. He took to his Twitter account, making countless posts bashing FUN Creators.

This is where the story gets good: FUN Creators denied ever making a copyright claim to YouTube. In response, Bain took pictures of the email that was sent to one of his staff by FUN Creators, in which a representative of FUN Creators known as Jasmine said, “…it will cost us nothing to send our lawyers to UK courts and make it a real accusation…” She goes on to say that the company “is bigger than a couple of videos.”

So not only are they lying about not making a copyright strike, but now they are saying that they will sue him to prove their point. To top it all off, the vice president of a company associated with FUN Creators came forward and said, “I’m a VP at Maker Studios. I can

confirm that Totalbiscuit’s video takedown request came from FUN Creators.”

FUN Creators told Bain to not play “photoshop games” with them. In retaliation, Bain posted a video to his Twitter of someone on a computer, going to his email, and clicking on the email from FUN Creators. And then, the icing on the cake, the coup de grâce; FUN Creators sent one last email, telling Bain this: “This is your last warning. Our company is a lot bigger than your little YouTube channel. We are not afraid of you. Remove all your tweets and delete your channel.

Do not tweet this message or we will claim it’s fake. We will get our lawyers involved and sue you.”

This company has managed to dig its own grave and destroy any shred of credibility they have ever had within the span of a mere

three days. If you ever wanted to see what a meltdown looks like, there is your answer.

When you get bad criticism, you learn to stick by it. Criticism is the best way to improve your craft, that way you don’t keep releasing bad games. Apparently, FUN Creators believes that they are above the criticism of someone from the internet.

But nay I say, nay! For the first game they will ever be releasing, they should be taking all the criticism they can get. Instead, they chose to act childish and try to censor one man’s opinion.

Ever since the last email was exchanged, Bain and FUN Creators have been at it on Twitter, threatening each other with lawsuits. I, for one, think it would be interesting to see where this goes. FUN Creators have sealed their fate as one of the worst game companies.

Chadron State College campus compared to Hogwarts

’m going to start by suggesting that if you haven’t read “Sorcerer’s Stone,” the first of seven books in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, you run to the nearest public library, grab a copy off the shelf, and begin reading. If you aren’t really into fantasy (or aren’t into books at all), there is an alternative. Lucky for you, there is a Harry Potter movie for every book, so you won’t miss a beat. This movie should also be available at the public library. Anyway, I digress.

Before I begin explaining where I am going with this, you should be familiar with the layout of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hogwarts is the school where all of the wizard children of England are sent to become educated in the application, ramifications and history of all things associated with witchcraft.

The wizard children are sent to this school by the time they turn eleven years of age. It is like a boarding school in the sense that the children live on campus.

Upon the children’s initial arrival to Hogwarts, they are sat, one-by-one, onto a stool where a hat known as the Sorting Hat is set atop their crowns. It sorts the young wizards into one of four Houses, based on character, because each house is known for housing wizards that possess certain character traits.

The four Houses include Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw. Bordering Hogwarts there is a forest referred to as the Dark Forest or the Forbidden Forest. The Houses, the Dark Forest, and various other structures are collectively known as Hogwarts.

Now that you have the basics down, we can move onto more complicated matters, or rather, more complicated relationships.

There is one relationship in particular that I am interested in pursuing. The idea comes from a group of students housed in CSC’s Edna. These students found a connection between the Houses of Hogwarts, and the residence halls on CSC’s campus.

Members of Hogwarts that are sorted into Ravenclaw are characterized by their wit, learning, and wisdom; just as the especially learning oriented students at CSC often find themselves choosing Edna as their choice dormitory. However, this is

not to say that there are not extremely witty and brilliant students in other dorms.

Hufflepuff is the most inclusive among the four houses; valuing hard work, patience, loyalty, and fair play rather than a particular aptitude in its members.

This classification fits most closely with the characteristics of High Rise, due to the fact that everything one could need is in High Rise, and there are few reasons other than classes and food to leave. There is a gym in the basement, the C-Store in the lobby, a large computer lab, and more than enough students to socialize with.

Slytherin is traditionally home to students who exhibit traits such as cunning, resourcefulness, and ambition. It is the resourcefulness and cunningness of the residents of Kent Hall that earned them the title of Slytherin.

Kent Hall is notorious for illicit activities, and on the whole, the residents are fairly practiced at finding new ways to do things they know they probably shouldn’t.

The particular characteristics of students sorted into Gryffindor are courage, chivalry and determination. These characteristics seem to be most accurately portrayed by the residents of Andrews Hall. These residents seem to keep mostly to themselves, but they are welcoming and chivalrous none the less.

You may be wondering about Brooks Hall; the fifth of five residence halls on

the Chadron State campus. No, I have not forgotten the residents of Brooks Hall, of which I am a member. However, I do regret to inform you that Brooks Hall itself does not possess the characteristics that warrant a comparison to one of the four Houses of Hogwarts.

This is not to say that the residents do not possess good traits, but rather that Brooks Hall has a reputation. It is a reputation that precedes any of the residents, but one that cannot be overlooked. Brooks Hall is commonly avoided, and for good reason.

There is really no reason that one would choose to enter Brooks Hall unless he or she lived there, or knew one of the residents.

In this way, Brooks is much like the Dark, Forbidden Forest behind Hogwarts.

The young witches and wizard are terrified to cross the threshold into the Forest, and not many of Hogwarts’ students have first-hand knowledge about the creatures that reside in the Forest. It is an unfortunate, but unavoidable, truth that the only option for Brooks Hall is to represent the Dark Forest.

I strongly suggest that you take what you have read here into consideration when it comes time for you to choose your next dorm.

Chadron State lacks a Sorting Hat, but that leaves you free to choose your own fate.

Ashley Swanson Managing Editor Let’s talk about the birds and the bees, the car in the garage, deflowering, and any other clichéd way to say sex.

Sex is a topic that often makes people change to five different shades of red and turn the other way; however, it is a big part of life. Ever wondered how babies are born? No, they are not delivered by storks in cotton-soft blankets as portrayed in children’s films.

In the 1800s, men pursued sex with women who showed them fear because it meant men had more power in the act.

Around the same time, anyone who was serious about Christian morality did not consider sex, but instead decided to be celibate. Pre-marital sex was a risk because they were often reported by priests and blamed as adulterers and fornicators.

Fast forward to Puritan life. Sex outside of marriage was still seen as a sin, so no change there, but that didn’t stop them from having shotgun weddings. It was frequent that one in three women was pregnant by the time she married.

When people did do the deed, the condoms they used were much different than they are today. Early rubber condoms were often used from the intestinal lines of animals, were as thick as bicycle tires, and smelled of sulfur. Condoms were not introduced to America until the beginning of the last century, and were founded by Julius Schmid.

Today, things have changed immensely from back then; however, to some religions having sex before marriage is still seen as a sin. Sex is not as strict as it was back then either, but instead is done a little more loosely. For instance, college students often hook up with on another, which could mean having casual sex or just doing everything besides having intercourse.

There are many myths regarding sex including the fact that aphrodisiacs boost a person’s sex drive; however, there really is no such thing as an aphrodisiac. There is no food, drink, or drug that amplifies drive before or during sex. Most often, people will nibble their lover’s ear, kiss their neck, or give them a massage to prepare them for sex.

Men lose 2 games, drop to 7-12 in RMAC Sarah Townsend Reporter Mackenzie Watson Reporter In another RMAC match-up, the CSC men were defeated, 94-74, Friday at Colorado Christian University, Lakewood.

The Cougars out shot the Eagles both from the floor and the free-throw line.

The Cougars could not be stopped as they shot 31 of 54 from the field and were 94.4 percent from the free-throw line.

Michael Brown, junior of Heber City, Utah, led the Cougars with 31 points. Brown was the driving force of the Cougar offense.

CSC’s Brandon Pippenger, sophomore of Banning, Calif., commented about the game and the Cougar defense.

“They shot the lights out and they played really good defense,” he said. “They over-played the wings, making it hard to get into our offense.”

Chadron started the game, competing well, but Colorado Christian made an 11-point run, setting the Cougars up for a 20-point victory over the Eagles.

The Eagles came within 12 points of the Cougars with a halftime score of 42-30.

The Cougars pulled forward and led by as much as 22 points in the second half.

CSC was 27 of 63 from the floor and had a

62.5 percentage from the free-throw line.

Chris Taylor, senior from Amman, Jordan, led the Eagles on Friday night with 13 points.

Taylor was five of nine from the floor and two of five from the free-throw line.

Kyle Vinich, junior of Casper, Wyo., tallied 11, and David Downey, senior of Scottsbluff, sank 10.

Zac Bargen, senior of Chadron, Evan Brooks, junior of Ontario, Calif., Justyn Anderson, sophomore of Las Vegas, and Kendrick Holliman, junior of Spanish Fort, Ala., added eight points each.

Grant Stone, senior of Canton, Mich., added six and Pippenger chipped in with two.

The CSC men also competed against Colorado School of Mines, Golden, on Saturday.

Colorado Mines came out with the win, 104-72.

The game started quickly. Within the first minutes, each team had scored once. Colorado Mines with a 3-point shot and CSC’s Holliman with a layup.

At the end of the first half, Colorado Mines was ahead, 57-36.

The Eagles scored 45.8 percent of its field goals in the first half. CSC made 33.3 percent of its 3-pointers in the half. They made 62.5 percent of their free throws.

The second half did not start off well for Chadron. After several missed shots a time-

out was called. Less than a minute out of the time-out CSC’s Stone made a 3-pointer assisted by Taylor.

Chadron played to the buzzer where Bargen attempted to make a 3-pointer with five seconds left.

CSC scored 39 percent of its field goals in the first half and 54.5 percent of their free throws in the second half.

The Eagles made 36 points in each half, proving their consistency.

Colorado Mines scored 57 in the first half, but CSC held them to 47 points in the second half.

Christopher Smith, junior of Pasadena, Calif., led the team in points on Saturday with a total of 17 points throughout the game.

Stone and Holliman followed with 12 points and 11 points respectively.

“It was a tough weekend for us,” CSC’s Josiah Lee, junior of Colorado Springs, said. “But we will bounce back as a unit and do what we can to finish the season strong.”

Chadron State’s current overall record is 10-13.

CSC has three basketball games left, all at Armstrong.

This weekend they play University of Colorado—Colorado Springs at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and Colorado State University—Pueblo, at 7:30

On Friday, the CSC women’s basketball team traveled to Lakewood, Colo., to face the 12-11 Colorado Christian University Cougars. The Eagles suffered an 81-61 loss against Colorado Christian.

CSC’s leading scorer was Kattie Ranta, senior of Rapid City, S.D., with 16 points in the entire game.

Forward Kayli Rageth, senior of Kimball, put up another 13 points for the Eagles.

Guard Dallas Shaw, junior of Buffalo, Wyo., added 10 points.

Ranta was CSC’s leading rebounder with 10 rebounds.

Forward Greer Babbe, senior of Papillion, was just behind her with seven rebounds.

Head Coach Tim Connealy said, “I thought we did a good job in the first half of moving the ball on the offen-

sive end and getting good shots.

“The chemistry we have developed in our offense the last month and half is starting to show and we saw that in the first half Friday.

“I thought we did a good job controlling their main threat on the offensive end, Christina Whitelaw, and limiting her easy baskets. Obviously we lost so it didn’t go the way we wanted.”

The Eagles scored 25 points in the first half, which was no match to Colorado Christian’s 32. The streak continued as CSC scored 36 points in the second half.

The Eagles had 22 turnovers for the game.

“Our next three games are all at home and that is encouraging,” Connealy said. “We have played very well at home this year, especially our last four games. We gain a lot of energy having the home crowd behind us and we appreciate every bit of the support.”

Chadron State lost to Colorado Mines, 87-63, during the last regular season away game Saturday.

It was an even game in the first half with the Oredig-

gers taking a point lead at halftime.

The Eagles made 14 of 27 from the field in the first half, including five of 10 from downtown.

The Eagles were in the game until Mines went on a run in the second half, and they never trailed after that.

Ranta led the Eagles with 19 points.

Rageth and Kate Simonton, junior of Bakersfield, Calif., scored 17 and 11 points respectively.

Courtney Gallo, senior of Lone Tree, Colo., led Mines with 24 points. Three other Orediggers scored in double figures. Tory Langas, senior of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Courtney Martin, sophomore of Parker, Colo., Katie Clements, redshirt senior of Thornton, Colo., scored 14, 13, and 11 points respectively.

Mines scored 30 points off Chadron’s turnovers, and they got a 30-point contribution from its bench.

Chadron will host Colorado-Colorado Springs at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Colorado State University-Pueblo at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Track team sets season bests at NCAA qualifier Jaycie Cheatham Reporter Saturday, Eagle track and field athletes traveled to Adams State University in Alamosa, Colo., for the NCAA Division II Qualifier Meet.

CSC competed against six RMAC opponents, including Adams State University, Alamosa, Colo.; Colorado Mesa University, Grand Junction; Colorado State University—Pueblo; New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas; University of Colorado—Colorado Springs; and Western State Colorado University, Gunnison, and West Texas A&M University, Canyon.

The Eagles won six events. The men won four events and the women won two field events.

Head Coach Ryan Baily said, “Our athletes compiled a total of 29 season bests, 18 from the men, and 11 from the women.”

Dean Francis, senior of Montego Bay, Jamaica, won the 200-meters and had a personal best time of 21.82 seconds. His time was six one-hundredths of a second slower than the current school record.

Karl McFarlane, senior of Montego Bay, Jamaica, won the 60-meter high hurdles with a time of 7.97 seconds.

His time was three one-hundredths of a second slower than the current school record that he set in 2011.

Charith Kapukotuwa, senior of Chilaw, Sri Lanka, had a mark of 61-feet in the 35-pound weight throw.

Skyler Hoopes, junior of Lusk, Wyo., cleared 14-9 1/2 in the pole vault.

Stachia Reuwsaat, freshman of Black Hawk, S.D., won the long jump with a jump of 18-8 feet.

Mel Herl, sophomore of Eaton, Colo., won the 20-pound weight throw with 53-1 3/4 inches.

Kelsy Wood, freshman of Hemingford, now holds the record title of the 60-meter hurdles, with a time of 8.91 seconds, which placed her in third for preliminaries.

The previous school record was set a week ago by CSC’s Shelby Bozner, sophomore of Rock Springs, Wyo., with a time of 9.04 seconds.

Bozner finished third with a time of 8.95 seconds and Wood finished fourth with a time of 9.19 seconds, in the finals.

Alex Graham, senior of St. Leonardo, Jamaica, received a time of 6.82 seconds in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash. Her time was eight one-hundredths of a second slower than the current record.

During the 60-meter finals, Graham placed sixth in 6.90 seconds.

Francis finished fourth in the race in with another personal best time of 6.85 seconds.

Gavan Archibald, junior of St. Ann, Jamiaca; Zerek Jones, sophomore of La Junta, Colo.; Frederick Culp,

junior of Mililani, Hawaii; and Brandon Segelke, senior of Sidney; made up the team that placed second in the men’s 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3 minutes 20.82 seconds.

Archibald, Jones, and Culp also achieved new personal best times in individual races.

“I was extremely proud of the way we competed all across the board,” Baily said.

The Eagles will compete next at University of Nebraska Tune-Up Meet in Lincoln on Friday.

The women’s track and field is ranked in the top 25 on the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Poll for the third week in a row. The were ranked No. 20 last week but dropped one place to 19 this week. They have a team score of 20.29.

The men’s team was also ranked in the top 25 last week but dropped out of the rankings this week. They were ranked No. 25 last week.

The RMAC is ranked No. 2 in the women’s conference index, but the men are ranked No. 3.

Softball bats into home plate this weekend Conor Casey Reporter The Chadron State College softball team went 2-3 during the St. Edward’s University Softball Classic in Austin, Texas.

The Eagles, now 3-7 overall, began the invitational Friday with a 1-0 setback to St. Edward’s University, Austin, Texas, and a 10-0 loss to Texas Woman’s University, Denton.

In the Eagles’ opener, the Hilltoppers of St. Edward’s University used an unearned run in the bottom of the second to overcome Kylee Polsley’s, senior of Omaha, pitching. Polsley threw a complete game, allowing only four hits while striking out nine.

The Eagles lack of offense continued later that afternoon against nationally ranked Texas Woman’s University.

Being overpowered by No. 14 Texas Woman’s University’s 10 runs on 10 hits, the Eagles only managed two hits of their own in the game.

In CSC’s only contest Saturday, the Eagles defeated St. Edward’s University 4-3 behind the strength of 11 hits.

Rebekah Anthony, sophomore of Monument, Colo., and Taylor Bauer, freshman of Rapid City, S.D., each collected two hits in the victory while Jessica Eatmon, junior

of Broomfield, Colo., batted in two runs.

On the final day, the Eagles went 1-1 defeating Texas A&M International University, Laredo, 3-2, and falling to Texas Woman’s University for the second time, 9-0.

The Eagles came from behind for their third victory of the season against Texas A&M International.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles scored two unearned runs to tie the game.

In the final inning, Katie Londo, senior of Colorado Springs, laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Eatmon to third. On the ensuing at-bat, Katelyn Kruger, sophomore of Highlands Ranch, Colo., singled up the middle for the walk-off victory.

Kruger went three for four with three singles and one RBI. In the Eagles final game Sunday, Zoe Humphries, freshman of Arvada, Colo., and Sarah Knudsen, senior of Parker, Colo., both recorded singles.

Anthony, who hit .385 for the weekend, was named to the all-tourney team.

Chadron State begins RMAC play at home this Saturday. The Eagles will face Colorado School of Mines, Golden, at 10 a.m. Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday. CSC will also face University of Colorado-Colorado Springs at 2 p.m.

Wrestlers prepare for regional tournament Wyo., 141-pounds; Tyler Smart, junior of Wheatland, Wyo., 165-pounds; and Devan Fors, junior of Roseburg, Ore., 197-pounds; are ranked seventh in their respected weight classes.

CJ Clark, sophomore of Rapid City, S.D., 157-pounds, and Caleb Copeland, freshman of Bennett, Colo., 174-pounds, are ranked fifth.

Michael Hill, junior of Fort Laramie, Wyo., 285-pounds, is ranked third.

In Thursday’s match against the now 5-7 Adams State University Grizzlies of Alamosa, Colo., the Eagles wrestlers prevailed and pinned down a 22-16 win.

The Eagles started strong with Summers winning an 8-7 decision.

The energy continued as Stodola defeated Adams State’s Martin Ramirez, sophomore of Elk Grove, Calif., with an 8-7 decision.

After the two initial wins for the Eagles, they lost their momentum and dropped the next four matches. This put the Eagles behind the Grizzlies 16-6.

Copeland brought back the next win with a decision over Mario Garcia, redshirt sophomore of Pueblo, Colo.

DeBus followed suite, and pinned Nevada Bencomo, freshman of Silver City, N.M., in an impressive 1:42 first period pin.

Fors stepped up and contributed a 10-2 major decision to the team effort to overthrow Adams State.

Hill continued the winning streak and pulled a 3-1 decision.

This four-match winning streak was all it took to put the Eagles ahead of the Grizzlies for the dual victory.

Because of a scheduling conflict, the Eagle’s dual against the University of Nebraska— Kearney was cancelled, so the Eagle’s next competition will be the NCAA Super Region 4 Tournament in Grand Junction, Colo.

The Eagles are not ranked in the NCAA Division II standings, which are determined by the D-II Wrestling Coaches Association poll.

However, Dustin Stodola, senior of Clarkson, 133-pounds, is ranked fourth in the nation individually in the NCAA Division II Poll.

Although the Eagles aren’t ranked in NCAA standings, the team is ranked No. 21 in the Basford Division II National Rankings.

The Basford rankings are complied by Chris Basford, a contributor to D2wrestle.com.

Stodola and Jordan DeBus, senior of Mitchell, 184-pounds, are ranked No. 4 and No. 6 respectively in Basford’s national individual rankings.

Chadron State is well represented in Basford’s regional individual rankings.

In addition to its national rankings, Basford divides the nation into four regions, and CSC is ranked No. 4 with 42 points in Region 4. The top ranked team, California Baptist, has tallied 61 points.

Taylor Summers, redshirt freshman of Plymouth, 125-pounds, and Jacob Anderson, freshman of Central City, 149-pounds, are both ranked fourth.

Artists proves passion trumps financial gain Leala A. Lewis Columnist

The biggest challenge college students can face is choosing a major, and Arden Nixon, CSC class of 2005, was no different.

“As a freshman, I actually started out as a sociology major thanks to my love of Ancient Egyptian history and my then-plan to transfer to another college,” Nixon said.

“Come the end of the school year, I was literally crying in my adviser's office because I was so miserable from lack of time for my art.” Nixon continued.

“Dr. Griffith, my advisor, handed me a box of Kleenex and suggested that in the coming year, we make my major better reflect who I was and what I needed, to be me. Art.” Aware of the common idea that making a living as an artist is a challenge and with her mother, Cid Donnelly’s support, Nixon allowed her love of art to create her path. Donnelly said, “She [Arden] could draw before she could walk. I knew that’s where her heart was. She was always encouraged to express herself openly and to believe in herself.”

Nixon changed her major and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with a minor in English, choosing art as her career path, “As I loved writing equally as much and still do. It just so hap-

pens that paintings are easier to show than novels, so art won the public part of me,” she said.

Nixon remained in Chadron a few years after graduation before moving to upstate New York in 2008, where she and her husband-to-be Nicholas Walter lived until 2009.

It was after Nixon met Walter, who “encouraged [her] at times and pushed [wwher] at others,” that her career as an artist with a style bordering on fantastical realism became a reality. Art steadily gained momentum and began showing her pieces in coffee shops and libraries, designed and coded a website and utilized Facebook to promote her works. She became a member of deviantART, where she received valuable advice from more established artists. Nixon has given permission to Heaven and Earth Designs, a cross-stitch company, to use her artwork as designs, for which Nixon receives compensation. She also utilizes Cafepress and Etsy to sell her artwork.

In 2010, after Nixon and her husband moved to Lincoln, she attended ConStellation, a regional science fiction convection held in Lincoln.

“That convention brought invitations to others, and a few years down the road, my work appears at close to twenty, with more still awaiting confirmation for this year. I make personal appearances at a handful, and this year I am the Artist Guest of Honor at two,” Nixon said.

Last year Nixon kept busy attending conventions and com-

pleting commissioned paintings, leaving her with very few paintings for upcoming shows.

The road to Nixon’s success hasn’t been easy and she has sometimes been uncertain about her career option.

“Good and bad days. Sometimes, I think I’ve made the right decision, and other times I wistfully think how nice it would be to have a steady paycheck and just paint when I got home from work,” she said.

“If I had to choose a different path, owing to financial hardship or what have you, I know I could. However, so long as the choice is mine to make, so long as I do no worse than breaking even, this is what I must and need to do,” Nixon said.

“There are too many people whom I am honestly terrified of letting down or disappointing: too many who helped, too many who believed, too many who took the time to tell a stranger what a certain painting mean to them on the most personal of levels.

While I may sometimes joke about a 9-to-5 job being easier, the truth of it is that I would spend all of that time thinking about what I'd paint when I went home,” she said.

For the time being, Nixon is successfully carving out a career as an artist and has incorporated her love of writing into her life; writing 5 complete novels.

“My goals for this year include finally self-publishing several of my novels and illustrating the same, as well as finding publishing houses for my existing body of artwork,” Nixon said.

Second annual Mr. and Mrs. CSC pageant hits the stage Mackenzie Watson Contributor The Mr. and Mrs. CSC Pageant, hosted by The Pit and Resident Life Association, will take place at 9 p.m., tonight, in the Student Center Ballroom.

The Mr. and Mrs. CSC Pageant is a mock pageant that is open to CSC students. The theme of this year’s pageant centers on the Brad Pitt and Angelia Jolie comedic action film about spies called “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” Nine males and females will contend in this year’s pageant.

Each contestant will compete in three events: talent, swimwear, and evening wear.

Mrs. CSC 2013, Jessica Jester, graduate student of Cheyenne, Wyo., wore a wet suit for swimwear in last year’s competition. Mr. CSC 2013, Zach Sandstrom, senior of Chadron, showed off his extremely slow cup stacking as his talent. Some contestants in last year showed off their different talents such as building a sandwich, performing music and dance pieces, and showing self-defense moves.

The judges of the pageant are Miss CSC Rodeo Queen, Bailey McLean, freshman of Sheridan, Wyo.; Miss Ogallala Round Up Rodeo Queen 2014, sole returning judge, Laramie Schlichtemeier, sophomore of Ogallala; CSC’s The Voice winner, Frederick Culp, junior of Mililani, Hawaii; and Mr. and Mrs. CSC 2013 People’s Choice, Kirby Krogman, junior of White River, S.D. The first place winners will receive iPad Mini’s, while smaller prizes will be awarded to second and third place. All contestants will receive a t-shirt for their participation.
