Senate approves 2 petitions, denies 1 Jaycie Cheatham, Teri Robinson, Angie Webb Reporter, Photo Editor, Advertising Director Student Senate voted in two new senators in a special meeting Wednesday called by Student Senate President Dillon Spies on Tuesday.

In the special mandatory meeting at 5 p.m. in the Scottsbluff room senators discussed and voted upon Senate seat positions from Josh Mayer, Garrett Lower, and Nathaniel Jones. Spies said he called the meeting after speaking with the faculty advisers about questions raised after Monday’s regular meeting concerning the three petitioners.

The agenda was “too important to wait” until Senate’s regularly scheduled Monday meeting, Spies said.

After discussion the Senate unanimously approved Mayer as a senator of liberal arts, 7 votes to 0 votes.

Once elected, Mayer was eligible to vote. Soon after he was approved, a ninth voting senator, Syerra Wycoff-Bagshaw, senatorat-large, arrived late to the meeting. She apologized and explained she was taking a quiz.

Lower, a former Student Senator who also ran for Chadron City Council in the fall election, petitioned for a seat as senatorat-large. He was voted down 5 votes to 4.

Jones, who served as Senate vice president in the academic year 2013-14, also petitioned for a seat as senator-at-large. The Senate unanimously approved him 9 votes to 0. Senator Katrina Hurley told Senate that she had been provided inaccurate information before last week’s meeting when she stated that 75 percent of college security cameras were not working. According to an

email from President Randy Rhine, out of 117 cameras on campus, 113 are working and a work order has been sent out to repair the four cameras that are down.

The college appreciates the Senate’s concern for the cameras that are not working, but does not need any funds from the Student Senate to pay for the repairs, Hurley said.

Hurley would not disclose her original source, but states she received her information from a student security officer and not Campus Resource Officer, Shane Sanders.

Treasurer Hannah Love reported $64,743.25 in unallocated funds.

Senator Michael Hall suggested creating some sort of survey to find out whether students know how to properly use the Internet connections in their rooms.

Students enjoy Food Fair CSC Dining Services brings Food Vendor Show to campus to provide new food experiences Teri Robinson Photo Editor The Student Center Ballroom was filled with students, faculty and staff, and various foods during the CSC Dinning Services Food Vendor Show Friday. Those who attended were treated to free samples of chicken, steak, cinnamon rolls, various produce, and much more.

Thirteen vendors displayed and handed out various samples for attendees to try. Although a count of attendees was not taken, the vendors commented that the crowd seemed bigger than in past years, according to CSC Dining Services Resident Operations Director Tracy Shuck. At the time Shuck was asked about feedback those who attended gave, he had no comment due to the amount of feedback received and not having sat down and read them yet.

The Dining Services hosts the Food Vendor Show as a “monetary break,” according to Shuck,

after coming back from the holiday break there’s a long eight weeks. They use it “to serve the students something different from the cafeteria or food court,” Shuck said.

“If they (vendors) have new products to show off we have a great market,” Shuck said.

Not only is the vendor show free, but it allows the students to try new products and give the vendors a different audience than the bigger vendor shows they normally attend according to Shuck.

Most of the vendors that participate in the show are used by the Dining Services “in some form or another,” according to Shuck. The produce table at the show is the vendor which the school’s produce is purchased from, and the cafeteria pizza crust is purchased from the Key Impact vendor. New vendors such as Rich’s, who brought cinnamon rolls, may be looked into and purchased for the coffee shop, Shuck said.

“We enjoy putting it together,” Shuck said. “We are glad everyone has a good time and it’s always a surprise to us at what vendors are coming.”

The Chief Information Officer, Ann Burk confirmed that the slow wireless Internet speed cannot be improved due to the construction of the buildings, Hall said.

Burk was not available Wednesday to confirm Hall’s report.

Vice-Chair of CAB Programming Chelsea Evans said that students are “good to go” for another free bowling night on March 28. There will be no free bowling nights available in April due to bowling leagues and tournaments.

IT analyst Ted Tewahade has agreed to help Laure Sinn give a presentation on African American history at 11 a.m. today in one of the rooms near the Pit in the Student Center.

Jackson Katz from UCLA will come to Chadron State to give a Title IX presentation March 17 in the Student Center Ballroom.

There will be a drawing for a big screen television to incite more attendance. To enter the drawing students must attend the presentation and have their student IDs scanned.

Vice President Taylor Strong reminded members that Student Senate elections are coming up. The executive board needs help getting information out and advertising to get more students to run.

Adviser Deena Kennell brought up a commercial she saw presenting the Indiana University Bloomington program Culture of Care.

This is a student-driven initiative that provides care in sexual well-being, drug and alcohol awareness, mental health, and respect. Kennell encourages students to research the program and consider pursuing it at CSC.

Chadron State College hosted the 29th Excellence in Early Childhood Conference last Friday in the Ponderosa, Lakota, and Bordeaux Rooms, and Saturday in the Student Center Ballroom.

The Early Childhood Development Conference on Friday gave attendees choices of seminar topics to sit in on and learn about how to care and deal with babies and young children.

A main session Friday ran the full length of the day while three smaller sessions in the afternoon gave three topics of childcare and facts.

‘Safe With You: Shaken Baby’ was the first session Friday afternoon, which focused on facts related to shaken baby syndrome.

Cindy Molina, an independent consultant

for early childhood from Gering, presented the first two mini sessions. ‘Nothin’ But BabyPreventing SIDS,’ and ‘Power to Protect –Preventing Child Abuse and Neglect’ were the other two sessions.

Molina discussed why babies and young children up to five years are susceptible to shaken baby syndrome because of the amount of room in their skull that allows their brain to move around and bump against their skull.

A fact she said many people don’t know is that tossing your child in the air and catching them—like many adults do with their children—or even bouncing them on your leg, can lead to shaken baby syndrome.

Any jarring of the baby or the head can lead to this syndrome.

Unfortunately it is difficult to determine how many times a baby must be shaken or jarred, and how severely, before that child develops shaken baby syndrome.

Galaxy Series performer signs contract Jaycie Cheatham Reporter The Galaxy Series performer for April 24 has signed the contract, “but there are still some minor things to work out” before the announcement of who the artists is, Lane Swedberg said.

Conferencing Coordinator Shellie Johns has no comment at this time about the concert.

The goal was to have tickets available to students by the end of February, but that is not happening.

Hopefully, they will be available after midterm break. If any tickets are leftover they will be open for community members to buy.

Vice Chair of Records, Stephanie Steele still needs updated packets, adviser agreements, and constitutions from several clubs by Friday, Feb. 26. Not updating these files could affect the clubs’ budget hearings.

CAB e-mailed members their budget packets which are due by March 6.

Clubs need to turn one copy in via the Sakai site and one in person to either the Senate office, located in the Student Center, or to Vice Chair of Finance Kelley McNabb.

Club members voted on themes for the remaining free bowling nights this semester.

March 28 will be 80s themed night and May 2

will be Hawaiian themed night.

The Big Event staff is still requesting clubs’ pledge numbers, due by Friday, Feb. 26.

Vice Chair of Finance Kelley McNabb reported $8,408.52 in unallocated funds.

March 16 will kick of Big Event Week ending with the Tower of Power event at High Rise on March 20. Every floor will have games to advance to the top floor where participants can sign up for The Big Event.

Everyone needs to be registered and assigned to a specific location by April 21.

The Big Event is to take place April 25.

Lane Swedburg, the coordinator of recruitment for the Nearly Naked Mile invites anyone interested in helping out to attend the first official meeting 4:00 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26 in the Student Center lobby.

The Nearly Naked Mile will be held on April 30.

The rodeo club is holding their annual Black Tie Calf Fry 7:00 p.m. in the Ballroom. Tickets from a rodeo member cost $15 and tickets at the door will cost $20.

The event will feature a speaker, a silent auction, and a live auction.

The College Relations club is hosting a dance in the Crites Hall lobby 9:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.

Students CAN make a difference EDITORIAL–THE EAGLE’S VIEW

We erred, we’re sorry We erred - egregiously - last week. We take full responsibility and we are sorry. Sincerely so.

Here is what happened: In The Eagle’s Feb. 19 edition, we published a paragraph in the Student Senate article quoting Sen. Katrina Hurley who claimed in the Feb. 16 open meeting that “over 75 percent of the cameras on campus do not work.” She added that she was working with security to solve the problem.

We failed to double check Hurley’s claim. It turned out to be inaccurate.

CSC President Randy Rhine issued a campus-wide email Feb. 19, setting the record straight about the cameras. He noted that the campus has 117 security cameras, and of those, 113 are “doing their jobs as designed.” Repairs for the four remaining cameras are in the works.

At the Senate meeting this past Monday, Hurley acknowledged she had been provided inaccurate information.

Our second, and perhaps most serious error appeared on our opinion page in that same Feb. 19 edition. We published commentary from a student who had attended the Feb. 16 Student Senate meeting. The student’s piece repeated the erroneous claim about downed security cameras and harshly criticized the CSC administration.

That student writer, while a regular contributor to our opinion page, is not a staff member of The Eagle.

We should not have run that piece.

How we failed: In the news article, reporter Jaycie Cheatham should have followed up after the meeting and questioned the Senator’s claim. News Editor Sarah Townsend, a sitting Student Senator, is not permitted to review, edit, or comment on Senate stories; that responsibility falls to Editor Jordyn Hulinsky, who should have challenged Cheatham’s story.

About the commentary, Hulinsky and Opinion Editor Spike Jordan together should have challenged the “75 percent” figure, recognized its potential for error, then concluded that the commentator’s criticism was misplaced.

In short, we are taught better, we know better, and we know we blew it.

Our remedies: On Feb. 19, we corrected the online version of the news article and pulled the student commentator’s piece from our website.

This past week, we identified how and why we made those errors; we reviewed and reflected upon the professional reporting and copyediting standards we are taught and strive to employ; and we recommitted ourselves to holding each other accountable for the standards of our profession.

Our errors affecting the college were grievous, and we sincerely apologize to President Rhine and his administration.

But in our opinion, the damage done to the college pales in comparison to the damage we have done to our credibility.

We have broken the trust our readers place in us. That trust cannot be restored with a late-afternoon email—or even this column.

To our readers, we sincerely apologize. We know it will take time to rebuild the credibility we have lost. We promise we will do everything we can to restore it.

We owe that to all of you.

tudent Senate involvement is at a low. Currently there are only 10 school, hall, and Atlarge senators combined.

Only 10 students are voting on important issues that directly affect students on this campus. I do not understand why other students do not feel any urge to make a difference.

As a student senator, I find the experience frustrating at times, but also very rewarding. I am making a difference on this campus, and can say that I am doing my best to represent the student body and create a better overall college experience for my peers.

My first question is: Do students realize the opportunities that they are missing out on by not being involved in student government? By being involved, students can gain confidence, learn to work with others, make friends, and let their opinions be heard.

That said, becoming a Student Senator is not the only way to be involved in making changes at this school.

My second question Is: Is a lack of marketing the reason for low student involvement? To answer my own question, I think that students do not realize all the opportunities

Jake Wirth believes that puns are the lowest form of humor, but Spike Jordan argues that all jokes, especially puns, can be the key to unlocking secrets as to how the human brain functions.

My girlfriend of a couple years loves river otters. These adorable hand-holding mammals seem to bring out a sense of giddy bewilderment that nothing else can.

From time to time, I will show some form of affection towards her with a plush or artistic form of an otter, to which she will undoubtedly reply, “Jake, will you be my significant otter?”

My heart stops and my brain has to try to comprehend the amount of juvenility that went into this statement. My mind blinks to manslaughter. Anything to get out of this situation. I wonder if I want to try dating again, but decide I don’t really have the time in my day to commit to the gym. All of these thoughts race through my head at the simple utterance of a pun.

This little linguistic tic, which many have picked up over the years, is the lowest form of comedy. Puns can grind witty conversation to a halt as everyone has to lower themselves to the mental level of a child to continue talking. Why is it that we believe ourselves smart when we can switch the words otter and other, or describe a banana as appealing? Oh! Har Har! How great and smart you are!

It was Oliver Wendell Holmes that stated in his book “The Autocrat of The Breakfast Table,” “(Punsters) are like wanton boys that put coppers on the railroad tracks... their little trick may upset a freight train of conversation for the sake of a battered witticism.” Today when people use this juvenile form of wordplay, many go to it as a guilty pleasure. People say them and the audience responds with a resounding sigh of disappointment. Personally, I en-

Last December, the Chinese government grabbed international headlines.

One LA Times news report stated that the State General Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television issued an edict “restricting puns and irregular wordplay on television and in advertising.”

I’m not well versed in Sino-cultural affairs, but from my understanding, the government wanted to ban puns because they were afraid that puns are an affront to traditional Chinese values.

There are probably international students on campus that could explain the concept in greater detail, but the gist I’ve gathered from reading on the subject is that Chinese language contains a large number of four-character idioms. Changing any one of those characters can create a humorous play-on-words. The idioms, however, are part of a cultural heritage, and the Chinese government feels that they should be spared from being converted into cheap puns.

But what exactly makes a pun, a playon-words, or any joke for that matter, particularly funny?

There’s a whole field of study in philosophy called “humor theory,” and part of the discipline is based in “incongruity theories.” A joke needs an incongruity, or something that violates the order of the language that we’re used to. It’s essentially the “punch” in a punch line, and we laugh

But worry not dear reader! There are many other witty and hilarious forms of comedy to take part in. Say you stub your toe in your dorm room. You can begin yelling and screaming, exclaiming that you see the light at the end of the tunnel.

This form of exaggeration can be quite funny for all involved.

But wait! There is more. Say the local youth have picked up some new crazy buzz word that you find ridiculous. It would be funny to mock this word with your friends by adopting it for very comical situations. #YOLO. It’s time to put away such an immature form of comedy and elevate ourselves to the level of comical geniuses. Using satire, irony, and exaggeration as our weapons, we can come together as an intelligent people and begin our war on puns. With my last few sentences I would like to apologize. By writing this portion of the head to head, I have unleashed the pun beast in Spike Jordan.

at it because we’ve learned a new order for the language. This also can help explain why a joke that we’ve heard before is no-longer funny, or why puns sometimes solicit groans. That punch line isn’t funny because we already know what’s coming.

For most American children, our first exposure to jokes was through puns printed on candy wrappers or Popsicle sticks.

Those jokes seem terrible the older we get, but our nieces, nephews, or younger siblings seem to love telling them. I’d imagine those jokes are still funny to them because they haven’t quite learned the new order of the language.

I know that sounds pretty complicated, but from what I’ve read, a number of universities around the world have developed computer models that seek to map out the logical pathways that are created when we learn the punch line from a joke, and I can only imagine that feeding puns into a computer is a quick and easy way to create those new logical pathways.

There are many exciting things that can be learned from these simulations, especially about how the human brain functions, how we learn, and how we store information. Perhaps China should rethink restricting the use of a valuable language that’s so perfectly prone to puns.

“T

onight, it’s going to be a little bit louder than the piano recitals you might be used to,” CSC Music Professor Charles Carey said while delivering the introduction for Tom Frear’s Senior Guitar recital, last Thursday in Memorial Hall, room 104.

Frear, a 22-year-old senior from Columbus, spent six months practicing for the recital, and performed a mix of fusion, jazz, classical, and fast-tempo country songs.

Brooks, bassist and junior of Alliance, and Emily Lisko, percussionist and senior of Piedmont, South Dakota. Lisko and Brooks are also Frear’s bandmates in Blue Street Trio. Frear said in an interview Tuesday that he had about four rehearsals with the band prior to the performance, but that he jams with them regularly.

“We all put a lot of work into it,” Frear said.

Frear opened with “Hong Kong Incident” by fusion group Jing Chi. It was written by Robben Ford and Jimmy Haslip, and was featured on Jing Chi’s 1992 self-titled album.

The second song was “Anthropology,” written in 1945 by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. “Nick Brooks has dubbed this song ‘AnthropOleo,’” Frear said when introducing the song. The play on words came from Brooks played the Oleo melody for the bass line,

and at the end of the song they played them both together.

“We decided to switch it up and mess with people,” Frear said.

The third song Frear performed was “User-Friendly,” by Steve Morse, from his 1992 studio album, “Coast to Coast.” Carey switched out with Brooks and played bass on the song. In an interview Tuesday, Frear said that it was the most difficult piece he performed.

“It’s a real wrist-burner,” Frear said, “you have to get all the way up to the top fret.”

On the fourth song, “Invention No. 4,” by Johan Sebastian Bach, Lisko sat out and Carey switch to guitar to accompany Frear.

Raymond, sophomore of Ainsworth, on Tenor Saxophone and a single gong hit near the end of the piece.

“The song originally had a piano part, but I decided that I wanted a Tenor Sax instead,” Frear said Tuesday. “I think he [Raymond] really won the crow with his gong hit.”

The final song was “Runaway Train,” also by Steve Morse. The song was a fast-paced, country-sounding song that featured finger picking, and sounded incredibly complex.

About 54 people attended Frear’s recital, including his parents, CSC alums Jim and Shelley Frear, and his grandmother, Edith Frear.

Frear has received a job offer to play guitar for Carnival cruiseship lines and will begin work with them this fall. He said he plans to finish his degree online.

Women drop 2 on road, fall to 8-17 Christopher Smith Reporter

The Chadron State women’s basketball team dropped two on the road this weekend in RMAC matchups, taking on University of Colorado-Colorado Springs and Colorado State University-Pueblo.

Friday, the Eagles took on UCCS, giving up 100 points in a 100-68 loss. This was only the fifth time in UCCS’ school history that the Mountain Lions scored 100 in a game.

CSC was scoreless in the first six minutes of the half, falling to a 15-0 deficit before going on a run to cut the lead 158. UCCS counter punched the Eagle’s attack in the final seven minutes, going into half with a 49-24 lead. Senior guard Abby Kirchoff, of Barrington, Illinois, led UCCS, scoring 23 of the 29 final points of the half.

In the second half, UCCS continued to be aggressive. The Mountain Lions’ lead extended to 37 points in the second half, cruising to an easy win.

The Eagles struggled from beyond the arc, shooting 17 percent. They were also out rebounded 43-31.

Junior guard Emma Block, of Copenhagen, Denmark, led the Eagles in scoring with 11 points. Junior forward Allegria Chisom, of Wichita, Kansas, chipped in with 10 points and

three assists.

Saturday, the Eagles took on the ThunderWolves on senior night, falling short 74-57. The Eagles played the opening five minutes close before Pueblo went on a 12-0 run to take a 21-8 lead with nine minutes left.

The ThunderWolves finished the half with a 33-22 lead.

“We fought, but early turnovers put us in a deficit that became too deep,” Senior guard Kate Simonton, of Bakersfield, California, said.

The Eagles struggled taking care of the ball in the first half, committing 12 turnovers.

In the second half, Pueblo opened up its lead going on a 22-11 run. At one point, the lead extended to 22. Junior guard Ashley Piper, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, helped lead Pueblo to victory scoring 15 points.

Pueblo outshot CSC 43 percent to 38 percent, going 56 percent from beyond the arc.

Junior guard Stephanie Knowles, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, led CSC, scoring 14 points, five rebounds, two blocks and three steals, going 6 of 11 from the field. Block filled up the stat sheet tallying eight points, seven rebounds and three assists. Simonton, chipped in 10 points.

The Eagles will play their final game at 4 p.m., Saturday, against Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota.

Eubanks went 5 for 8 in last weekend’s matchups to help the Eagles earn their first win of the season. She also added five RBIs and scored two runs. In nine game starts, Eubanks has tallied nine RBIs and a batting average of .400 this season.

Herl continued to impress at the Joe Davies Open Indoor, winning both the shot put and weight throw. She broke personal records in both events. Herl threw a stunning 60-10 3/4, 15 inches farther than her previous record.

Eagles dominate 2 meets

Collin Brook Reporter The Chadron State track teams competed in two separate events last weekend, with the University of Nebraska Tune-Up Meet in Lincoln on Friday, and the Joe Davies Open Indoor Meet in Golden, Colorado, on Saturday.

A myriad of runners broke personal records to open up the weekend, starting with senior Jayme Nunes, of Alliance.

Nunes ran the 5,000 meters in 18 minutes, 42.65 seconds, knocking a stunning 36 seconds off her old record. She placed fifth out of 16 runners.

Junior Evans Koech, of Nairobi, Kenya, also broke his personal record in the 3,000 at 8:42.65. He was 17 seconds faster than his previous record that he set last year.

Alejandro Garcia, junior of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, also broke his running record, finishing ninth in the men’s 5,000 in 15:15.11. That was 36 seconds faster than his previous best time.

Even more records were broken Saturday, and the Eagles won some individual events to match. Tessa Gorsuch, sophomore of Rapid City, South Dakota, continued to dominate the 60 high hurdles, breaking her own school record set earlier this year with a time of 8.64. This record may propel her into the top 16 of the nation, allowing her to qualify for nationals.

Gorsuch won the event.

Chris Cutcher, sophomore of Colorado Springs, Colorado, also broke his personal record in the high hurdles, with an 8.01 run, beating his previous record of 8.1 seconds.

Mel Herl, junior of Eaton, Colorado, won the women’s shot put and the 20-pound weight throw while posting personal records in each. Her shot put throw was 45 feet 9 3/4 inches, 10 inches farther than the previous record, and her weight throw was 60-10 3/4, a career best. Herl was 12th on the national list in the weight throw entering this weekend, and her record breaking performance on Saturday will no doubt push her even closer to qualifying for nationals.

On the men’s side, Kyle McCarthy, senior of Aurora, placed second in the weight throw, tossing the weight 56-7 ½, crushing his previous record throwing an extra 11 inches.

The Eagles look to continue this fantastic season this weekend at the RMAC Indoor Championships in Gunnison, Colorado.

CSC squared up with the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, Friday, where they fell, 86-80.

The Eagles played well in the first half, swapping leads until the No. 20-ranked Mountain Lions went on an 8-4 run in the last five minutes, giving them the advantage, 41-38. Senior Chris Smith, of Pasadena, California, led the Eagles with eight points. Sharif Black, freshman of Detroit, grabbed seven rebounds to go along with six points in the first period.

After the break, UCCS came out swinging, extending the lead to 56-42. The Mountain Lions shot 57 percent from behind the arc, giving them the edge they needed. Seniors Evan Brooks, of Ontario, California, and Josiah Lee, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, each added seven for the Eagles.

With just over a minute left, the Eagles came within four of the Mountain Lions. However, UCCS hit four straight from the line to seal the game.

Black and Brooks finished with 13 points. Smith followed with 12.

“We had great ball movement early in the game,” Smith said. “We weren’t able to finish that way.”

CSC faced off against Colorado State University-Pueblo, losing 86-73. In another back-and-forth first half, the Eagles held a two-point advantage going into the break, thanks to a buzzer beater from Justyn Anderson, junior of Las Vegas.

The second half proved to be the same story, neither team able to build a substantial lead until the ThunderWolves went on a 12-1 run, to launch them to a victory.

Smith led the Eagles with 16 points, shooting 50 percent from three-point land. Senior of Spanish Fort, Alabama, Kendrick Holliman, added 12. Michael Safer, senior of Elizabeth, Colorado, ended the night with 12 points, five boards, and three blocks.

“I went to the free throw line a lot,” Safer said. “I was more aggressive and my teammates kept giving me the ball. I also knew that their big men were important to their offense, I wanted to help out my team by taking that option away.”

Chadron State will finish the season against rival Black Hills State University, Saturday.

“We’ll prepare the same with hard practices and a great scouting report from the coaches,” Safer said. “This game is important to all of us to finish strong and end the season well for those returning next year. We owe these guys after earlier this year.”

Softball team wins 1 of 4 conference games Evan Brooks Reporter The Chadron State College softball team traveled to Silver City, New Mexico, this weekend to open RMAC play against CSU-Pueblo and Western New Mexico University. The Eagles played each team Saturday and Sunday.

Against Pueblo (8-8, 4-0 RMAC), Courtney Lecher, sophomore shortstop of Fort Collins, Colorado, helped the Eagles (1-15, 1-3 RMAC) off to a good start, cracking a solo homer in the first inning and a double in the second to bring home Shea Graham, junior outfielder of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The Eagles controlled the game until Pueblo’s pitcher blasted a grand slam in the fourth inning to take a 5-3 lead. In the fifth, Pueblo’s catcher added another home run to lift the Thunderwolves to a 7-3 lead.

Casey Polk, senior of Golden, Colorado, doubled in the sixth inning to make things interesting, as the Eagles cut the Thunderwolves’ lead to one. But a Pueblo three-run home run in the bottom of the inning proved to be the dagger, propelling them to a 10-6 victory over CSC.

The Eagles jumped out to a demanding 10-1 lead through two and a half innings against Western New Mexico (4-11, 1-3 RMAC). Jessica Eatmon, senior outfielder of Broomfield, Colorado, and Aspen Eubanks, freshman infielder of Broomfield, Colorado, each hit doubles in the first to help the Eagles score their first four runs.

Zoe Humphries, sophomore catcher of Arvada, Colorado, hit a two-run home run in a three-run second inning for the CSC, and Graham added another two-run homer in the top of the third.

The Mustangs got things going in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs off of four walks and two home runs. They carried this momentum into the fourth inning, attacking the Eagles with seven of their next eight batters hitting singles, taking a 16-10 lead over CSC. WNMU scored two more runs to end the game due to a run rule, 18-10.

Sunday, the Eagles played two close games and found their first victory of the season against WNMU, 9-8.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead early on after Humphries smashed a double to bring home Caroline Johnson, junior infielder of Firestone, Colorado.

The Mustangs answered with a solo home run to tie things up, but CSC’s Eubanks, who went 3-4 with three RBIs, hit a solo homer of her own in the second to put the Eagles back on top.

CSC jumped out to a 6-1 lead through three innings thanks to a two-run single by Katelyn Kruger, junior first baseman of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and a two-run double by Eubanks. The Eagles scored two more runs in the fifth to take an 8-3 lead.

The Mustangs fought back, scoring two runs in the sixth to make it an 8-5 lead for the Eagles.

Kruger was walked early in the top of the seventh. Three batters later, Lecher hit a single to bring Kruger home and take a 9-5 lead.

Despite giving up a couple of walks and singles, Tayler Hall, junior pitcher of Windsor, Colorado, closed the game out to give the Eagles a 9-8 victory over the Mustangs.

“We were excited to get that first win under our belt,” Polk said. “We played so well this weekend, and it finally paid off. We’ve been doing everything right. So, we knew it was going to happen.”

The Eagles threw the first punch again against Pueblo, with Polk hitting a single up the

middle to bring Lecher home and take a 1-0 lead.

Humphries followed with a solo home run in the third to take a 2-0 advantage. Late in the sixth, Graham, who went 3-3, doubled to left field to bring Eubanks home. Bekka Prokaski, sophomore infielder of Broomfield, Colorado, came in as a pinch hitter on the next at bat, hitting a sacrifice fly to lift the Eagles to a 4-0 lead.

The ThunderWolves found a way to pull it out down the stretch, starting the inning with a solo home run. A two-run home run later gave the Eagles a 4-3 advantage. With the bases loaded, Pueblo brought in a pinch hitter, who would single to center field to bring home two runners and take a 5-4 edge.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles could not manage a hit, giving the ThunderWolves an impressive come-from-behind win.

“We will enter (next weekend) with confidence without a doubt,” Polk said. “The results of last weekend’s games don’t reflect on how well we played. If we keep playing the way we are, we will have a successful season.”

The Eagles will play two double headers against Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado, Saturday and Sunday.

Purity Ring’s leaked album does not disappoint Opinion Editor Canadian electro-pop duo Purity Ring is set to release their second album, “Another Eternity” via 4AD records. The U.S. iTunes release date is marked for March 3, but an advanced copy has already leaked to several music blogs.

Their first release, 2012’s “Shrines,” was one of my favorite albums (2012 was just a good year for music in general), and as soon as I heard the rumors about this release, I preordered both the iTunes and LP versions (the first 300 some pressings of which are reported to be on clear vinyl).

The band has released two singles so far; “Push Pull” and “Begin Again.”

“Push Pull” is a noticeable change to Megan James’s vocals; she receives a more prominent place in the mix, and Corin Roddick’s beats seem to mirror a lot of her melodies rather weaving back and forth between the bars.

“Begin Again” seems to return to previous form with brooding and massive Witchhousesounding synths, but James’s vocals on this track seem really pop-y, (I’ll probably kick myself later for this, but almost Taylor Swift-ish).

My curiosity got the better of me, however, I hunted down a copy of the leak to give it a listen (and to be fair, I did purchase two “copies” of the record, so it’s not like I was cheating the band out of revenue).

I wasn’t disappointed.

The opening track, “Heartsigh,” feels like the opening to a movie with glitch-step style

CSC faculty artists showcase artwork at ‘Art Infinity’ Hannah Clark Web Editor Artist features from the CSC faculty art show: Daniel Binkard: Binkard has worked at Chadron State College since 2008 as the college relations graphic designer. His love is the camera, which he first picked up at age 15. His mother, a big influence on the budding artist, encouraged his artistic pursuits.

“My mother was an artist herself, of many mediums” Binkard said.

Four of Binkard’s photographic pieces hang in the faculty show. He can’t pick a favorite, because they are a complete series, but he enjoyed the conceptual muskrat photo.

“I like the image, it’s abstract while still remaining identifiable,” Binkard said.

Binkard advised that young artists, who want to make a living, should constantly practice their craft.

“Give it the time it deserves,” Binkard said. “Always look for

Sarah Polak: Polak, the director of the Sandoz Center, will have worked as CSC for 11 years next month. She identifies her favorite medium as charcoal, which she loves for the flexibility of the medium. She finds the variation of the shades, from black to white, very versatile.

However, she isn’t showing any charcoal in this faculty show. Rather, her display is composed of fabric arts, including an interactive piece, composed of leaf-shaped swatches.

The fabric leaves are arranged in a circle on a lazysusan and a small, hand-held fan lies nearby. Gallery guests can spin the circle and watch the leaves flutter in the wind, imitating the dance of fall. This piece is Polak’s favorite.

The fabric, with colors running from a bright green to a fiery orange, inspired Polak. When she started arranging the leaves, the interactive process evolved organically.

Polak’s advice to young artists comes from a museum/gallery perspective.

“If you want to show in a gallery space, be prepared to an-

swer their questions and have pictures of your work available. If you want your work to be seen, be willing to show it.

Be confident,” Polak said. Artists often want to show in the school’s space, but they aren’t prepared to show samples of their work. In order to show in a gallery, you first have to show to a committee.

ART INFINITY Donahue hadn’t worked with watercolor for decades, but the materials were the easiest thing to take on her rafting trip down the Grand Canyon last summer. The pieces are collage watercolors, which combine local experiences and regional information.

“I am interested in sense of place, human connection to land, time, memory, writing and environmental issues, there are news article in the collage, so I tried to combine those ideas into the pieces as well,” Donahue said. Her favorite medium is paint.

“I enjoy working with color and broad strokes. I like the emotion and tactile quality to paint,” she explained.

Laura Bentz: Bentz started at Chadron in the fall of 2005, after moving from Gallup, New Mexico. Since then, she has taught art and acted as Chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.
