Regional schools compete in history day events Clint Johnson Contributor

The annual National History Day district competition for the region will be from 8:30 a.m.-noon, Friday at this year’s History Day. The competition is made up of two divisions,’ junior sixth-eighth grade and senior ninth-twelfth grade.

The competition can be entered as an individual or as a group, with a maximum of five students. Public, private, and homeschooled students are all able to take part in the competition.

The theme this year is “Rights and Responsibilities in History.” There are 80 students from the region they will compete in five categories exhibit, performance, website, documentary and historical paper.

Most of the entries can be seen in the Student Center.

A new bylaw was passed enabling associate members enrolled in less than 12 undergraduate credits or nine graduate credits to serve on Senate. This bylaw was drafted by Chief Justice Jon Lordino and evaluated by Senate members. The new bylaw states, "Senators shall be enrolled in at least twelve (12) hours of undergraduate credit, or at least nine (9) hours of graduate credit at Chadron State College, an exception is made when any association member is enrolled in a number less than (12) hours of undergraduate credit,

The Campus Activities Board discussed homecoming for this coming fall, and the Career Fair taking place March 21. The date of homecoming has been set for Oct. 4, and the themes are still being discussed. An

update on the CAB’s Constitution is also going to be made so that not all meetings will be mandatory, and clubs won’t be punished if they are absent. Allocation of funds will be directly proportional to a club’s attendance.

Clubs need to get in their itemized budgets by March 7, so that the distribution of funds can be planned accordingly. Other upcoming events include the Club Fair, which takes place from 6-7 p.m., March 5, in the library lobby. The next mandatory CAB meeting will be on March 4.

Although many students do not want to take classes in the summer, it gives them a head start and opens the possibility of graduating early.

Many students only think about what classes they can take in the fall and spring semesters, and often forget that they could be taking classes throughout the year to be ahead of the game.

“We encourage students who want to graduate early to take this path,” Douglas said.

One thing that not many students know is that financial aid is available in the summer.

Students should registered for summer classes

by April 15 in order to receive financial aid. If students want to take summer classes they can find the list of summer classes available through CSC. Go to www.csc.edu/summer or go to the CSC homepage and click on “Accelerate Your Education.”

For undergraduate and graduate courses, eight week one and four week one sessions begin May 12; eight week two and four week two sessions begin June 9; and four week three sessions begin July 7.

The Big Event is set to make its way back to the community this April, and registration is just around the corner. Volunteers can register for The Big Event beginning March 17-April 11. Interested parties can fill out registration forms online on the CSC website (www.csc.edu/thebigevent), on The Big Event-CSC Facebook page, and with the staff members of The Big Event, who will have tables set up around campus.

“The Big Event” allows for students, faculty, and staff of Chadron State to volunteer in numerous

ways around the community. The Big Event began in 1982 at Texas A&M University and now takes place on 72 campuses across the country. Last year marked the first time “The Big Event” occurred in Chadron, and it turned out to be a huge success, with more than 400 CSC students, faculty, and staff coming together to help out. “It was great to see so many students, faculty, and staff support the community,” Sam Parker, senior of Harrison, event coordinator, said. “This year we hope to make it even bigger. We encourage all students, faculty, and staff to get involved.”

Remember Mr. Rogers as a great man

Richard Heule Columnist This week, I wanted to take time to talk about one of the most influential people in my life. It is the eleventh anniversary of his death today, and I think it is appropriate to pay tribute to the one and only Fred Rogers. You would remember him as Mister Rogers from Mister Roger’s Neighborhood, which is, in my opinion, probably one of the best shows made for children ever. He has left a mark on all of us, whether you know it or not.

Fred Rogers was born March 20, 1928.

When he was a child, he spent most of his free time with his maternal grandfather, Fred McFeely, who was very interested in music. If that name rings a bell,

it’s because there was a character on Mister Rogers Neighborhood named after him; Mr. McFeely, the postman. Not only that, but Rogers’ grandfather’s interest in music contributed significantly to Rogers’ life, as he graduated from Rollins College in Florida with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Composition. Later in his life, he met Sara Joanne Byrd, whom he married on June 9, 1952.

In 1954, Fred Rogers started working at a public television station in Pittsburgh called WQED, as a puppeteer on a kid’s show called “The Children’s Corner”, where he created many assets that would later be used in his own productions, such as the puppets King Friday XIII and Curious X the Owl. At the same time he was in television, he would use his lunch breaks to go study at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, where he would later become an ordained minister.

After a few more years of working at various television stations, Fred Rogers developed his own show, called Mister Rogers Neighborhood. It first aired on the Eastern Education Network, but was moved to PBS in 1969.

However, around this same time, PBS was in danger of having its funding cut to around $9 million. Fred Rogers ap-

peared before the Senate Subcommittee on Communications to increase the funding of PBS to $22 million. He argued passionately about the benefits of his show, even reciting some lyrics to one of his songs. The chairman of the committee, John O. Pastore, had never heard of Mister Rogers Neighborhood, and was notorious for being a tough cookie. However, this is what he had to say about the program: “I think it’s wonderful. Looks like you just earned the $20 million.”

From then on, Mister Rogers Neighborhood was broadcast across the United States until 2001, with a total time of 33 years on the air. I will never forget the cherished moments of being a young kid sitting around the house, when all of a sudden, that familiar theme song came from the TV, and I ran over to see what would be going on in the Land Of Makebelieve that day.

He taught me it was okay to feel the way I was feeling. The fact that it is our feeling, makes it unique. In the words of Fred Rogers, “It’s such a good feeling to know you’re alive. And when you wake up ready to say “I think I’ll make this a snappy new day.” It’s such a good feeling, a really good feeling, the feeling you know that we’re friends.

Respect other people’s personal space

ersonal space—it’s something that most everyone values.

When it comes to college, that personal space may be difficult to find when sharing a dorm room with a roommate or suitemate, but it’s important to remember to respect that space.

Now, it’s two months into a new semester, and maybe a person stayed with a roommate from last year, has a single room, or is sharing a room with someone new; regardless of the rooming status, it’s easy to forget these simple gestures that

tell their roommate, “hey, I respect your space, so please respect mine.”

First, keep it tidy. Not every person in the world is a clean freak, but not everyone is a master at creating the biggest mess, and then leaving it there for a few weeks or months.

Second, don’t expect that all the floor space is allocated to just one person. This includes where the beds are placed, the number of dresser drawers, and closest space. This item doesn’t pan out the same way in every dorm. For instance, in Edna Hall, two rooms share a living room. In this case, ask your suitemate what furniture they have, come up with a layout for the living room, and go from there. In other dorms such as Kent or Brooks, people are sharing an entire room together so it’s easy to overstep boundaries. Share the space so that everyone can be happy. Neglect this gesture, and it’s more likely that someone will be angry with the other.

Third, don’t be stingy. Some people like to harvest every item they have to themselves. Now I’m not saying go around and share your hairbrushes or towels, but there

are some items that can be shared. Have a couch? Let your roommate relax on it instead of stating that the couch is only for its owner and the owner’s friends. Nobody has time for that kind of person.

My suitemate and I share a living room and we’ve never had a problem. I’ll work out in the living room which requires me to move the furniture, but after I’m finished, I move the furniture back into place.

Fourth, don’t for the love of all that is holy, be the kind of roommate that drags friends to the room and has a competition of who can be the loudest. Personal space isn’t just physical; it also goes for noise levels. If one roommate brings in friends, and they are being so loud that the other roommate has to leave in order to study, that personal space has been invaded, and the roommate is probably pissed off. Again, don’t be that kind of person.

Respect each other and dorm life will go a much smoother. I have four years of experience to fall back on. Then again, maybe you have a single room and none of this really applies to you, so just keep doing what single-roomed people do.

The power of quitting is strong

The education field has major rewards Many students often wonder if they are in the right field for them. While each individual case is going to be different, education majors in specific must look at if they are in the field for intrinisic rewards—we all know the field has little to no attractive extrinsic rewards.

So what are the intrinsic rewards that education offers? One of, if not the most attractive extrinsic rewards education offers is the goodheartedness and humorous qualities that rubs off from the students and onto you.

For example, think about these situations.

A class of kindergartners gather around their teacher for story time. The teacher tells the kindergartners of her weekend.

“First, I went to my brother’s house to pick him up.” The teacher says. The kids look interested, but unsure of what the teacher is saying exactly, and where she is going.

“Then, we drove to Wyoming.” Again, the kindergartners look interested, but unsure.

“Then, we watched the Wyoming Cowboys play football.” The kids gasp, and one asks, “Real cowboys?”

A kid in the second grade walks in to his classroom at the beginning of the day. The teacher, noticing the boy is wearing a shirt she has not seen him wear before, asks him, “Is that a new shirt?”

The boy looks to be deep in thought for a moment before he answers, “No, Mrs. Teacher. But it used to be new!”

A fourth grader walks in to his classroom and notices one of his classmates is already in the room and has a muffin in his hand. “Why do you have a muffin?” The first boy asks. The boy with the muffin replies, “Because it is my birthday!”

The first kid says, “But you have had a muffin every day this week. You have the longest birthday of anybody in America.”

These real moments show the good-heartedness and humorous qualities of elementary children. For those majoring in the education field, these qualities will be rewards given to them everyday during their tenure as teachers.

Such qualities are rewards that almost anyone would love to have. Remember that, all of you education majors.

S

omeone once said, “You’re defined by how you handle stress in the face of adversity.”

I’m not going to waste my time trying to attribute the phrase because that “someone” is more than likely dead and his copyright has probably expired with him.

But I’ve noticed that people will throw banal quotes like that around hoping to inspire others to achieve success.

I think that’s good, but the problem I see is that we’ll only read the sentence one way; “no matter how much pressure you’re under, you are not allowed to quit.” That’s a positive thought for some people, but that’s not viewpoint I’ve been searching for.

I woke up a couple of weeks ago to find that my car had been stolen. It was deadline day for The Eagle, I had news stories to finish reporting on, an upcoming Army reserve duty in Casper, Wyo. (which I couldn’t make it to without a car), and a whole host of other problems weighing on my mind. I was well beyond my limits and I wasn’t able to focus.

So how did I handle the stress in the face of such adversity? I chain smoked, finished my work and spent the rest of the night awake and worrying about my future. The next day, I made a decision: I walked in to The Eagle and resigned as the news editor. I gave up; I quit.

A cliché we’re taught growing up is that winners never quit. If you follow that logic, I’m your textbook loser; but look that word up in the dictionary and my picture won’t be beside it. That logic doesn’t apply to me because I’m not a binary definition; I’m a pleasant ambiguity known as a human being.

We are conditioned by society to believe that if we quit we are somehow defeated. Winning makes you a success, while losing means you’re a failure. Because of this fundamentally flawed value system, we are supposed to be ashamed when we quit something.

MAN ON THE STREET

Believe me; I feel no shame.

In fact, I’m extremely proud of the fact that I quit. Of course, there were consequences for my actions. I now owe the Department of Veterans Affairs money for the class I had to drop when I resigned from the Eagle staff.

But I’ve come to realize that a degree doesn’t illustrate how smart you are and I’ll happily pay Caesar what belongs to Caesar. My happiness is worth more to me than acquiring pieces of paper with arbitrary and imaginary value.

But I’m mostly proud of what I’ve lost (stress) and what I’ve gained (peace of mind). I’m proud because I quit on my own terms. I gave up my desire to be seen as successful and I found the freedom to pursue something more satisfying and important than reporting on student government.

To all the winners who are stuck chasing accomplishments and manipulating people to acquire success; I wish you only the best of luck, and I hope you grab a taste of that “Big W.” Honestly, that game is not for me.

You learn the best lessons from failure, not achievement.

I came to college to learn something, so I might as well intend my mistakes.

Find love, pride in being an Eagle

W

hen I graduated high school, I thought I would be married by the time my college career came to a close.

With an expected graduation date only a semester away, I think it’s safe to say that that’s probably not going to happen.

When I graduated high school, I had no idea that I would fail more than I would succeed and that those failures are in fact a success on their own time.

When I graduated high school, I had no idea what I’d really be getting on my journey toward earning a degree.

I often get asked why I chose Chadron State. As cliché as it sounds, I fell in love.

No, I didn’t have a boyfriend here or planning to attend CSC, I fell in love with the campus. I not only saw a beautiful campus, but a starting point.

I saw opportunity. I saw a spark.

The same spark I see in the eyes of high school students when they visit CSC for the first time.

The question I ask all of you is not whether you felt the spark then, but whether or not you feel the spark now?.

Growing up is a process of great successes and even greater failures.

There are times when I’ve even blamed CSC for my struggles. We all do. The reasoning? I’m sure each one of you has your own idea, but I’ve decided it is because CSC is our parent. Yes, parent.

Just like our mothers stayed up late washing our basketball jerseys night after night during tournament play, just like our fathers lectured us about checking our oil before long trips, CSC does the dirty work to make sure each and every one of us is prepared mentally and physically for whatever it is that

may come next, knowing that it is going to be underappreciated but doing it anyway because it is our guardian.

At the end of the day, we decide our experience. You can curse Chadron for being “too small” or you can be thankful that the professors, faculty, and staff can call you by name on campus, downtown, or in Walmart.

You can complain about being “too busy” or you can be thankful for the opportunity and freedom to be involved in whatever you want.

You can curse your peers, but knowing over half of your undergraduate graduating class is a privilege that we, as Eagles, have. No matter what you do at CSC, you ARE Chadron State College, each and every one of us, together.

Four years anywhere would be miserable if you persuaded yourself to feel that way. Change starts internally.

Find your spark so when the day comes for you to look back on your time at CSC you know that you loved with no regrets, jumped without fear, and you lived with a Photo Illustration by Ashley Swanson sense of invisibility.

The first student you notice walk in is Mike. Mike is a real chill guy, and rule number one of being a real chill guy is that real chill guys do not simply walk in to the classroom. Therefore, Mike does not simply walk in to class. Instead, Mike has his Beats by Dr. Dre (also known as the chillest of headphones) on and is swerving side to side in his walk as he gets down with his bass. Mike almost bumps into a desk because he has been head-banging for a whole hour and has become disoriented — but he finds his seat. Mike is a character, and that’s why we all love the Mikes of CSC. The second student you notice walk in is George. George is on the football team.

You know George is on the football team because of his sweats, but also because of his aura of intimidation. You made quick note of that when, as he walked into the classroom the first day, he pulled a balloon from his duffle bag, popped it and growled lowly, “Grrr.”

Both students are great people who revel in what they do. Unfortunately — because sometimes we all write off people as stereotypes — Mike and George do not know each other well. Mike does not identify with George because he does not seem to understand the greatness of Beats, and George does not identify with Mike because, well, he doesn’t wear ‘the sweats.’

However, people are not walking stereotypes. Each and every one of us has a plethora of interests, and we have so many different sides because of those interests.

It is not completely appropriate to blame Mike and George for stereotyping each other though. An issue equally problematic is the probability that we may present ourselves as stereotypes.

For example, many of us change from Sunday morning to Saturday night. During the former, many of us have a religious book in hand, a tie on, and are raising the roof for

whoever our savior may be. During the latter, these same people have excess alcohol going in their mouth and garbage coming out. As seen, sometimes we fit ourselves right into stereotypes by actively showing only one side of ourselves.

What would you say if Mike and George, the real chill guy and the intimidating football player, both loved Spongebob?

What if the song Mike was playing on his Beats started as “Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?” And the balloon that George had was obtained on National Free Balloon Day (Spongebob reference)?

Hopefully it would not be all that surprising.

After being in college for long enough, we learn a vast majority of people have a nerdy side to them.

Almost never, however, is it the side that we choose to show. Instead, we let ourselves appear as flat characters without diverse interests. Because of such, Mike and George may never become friends when they could have been singing, “F is for friends who do stuff together” all along.

Because it is a tragedy we do not show all of ourselves to others, we should each think about changing this. It can be hard to show your socially less-accepted sides, however, mainly because almost everyone has a fear of being ostracized.

To overcome this, the first thing we need to learn to do is to unconditionally love ourselves. Then, we must freely express ourselves. Every part. Last, we must forgive those who ostracize us for doing so.

Love yourself So let us say you are a person who has a lot of pride, but has yet to learn self-love.

You also have an undying interest in certain Japanese comics (also known as manga) like Dragon Ball. Or Star Trek. The world sees such as nerdy, dumb, and bland, but all you see is your favorite hobby, your joy, but because of your dynamics, you cannot share

this with anyone.

I have a question for you: does pulling off a chill stereotype mean much? You may say something to me like: not to you pink starfish-lover, but to a true chill guy keeping it real it matters greatly.

I like your answer; it shows you have spunk, Mr. Spock. But here is an answer to your answer: most of us are a bit silly. (That is a euphemism; if you want the cut truth, most of us are dorks.) So why keep hiding what you enjoy instead of sharing it with others who enjoy it, or may enjoy it if they were to be introduced?

Your hobbies and interests are an important part of who you are. If you like something, do not let your self-created guilt of such control you. If you do, you are giving your life away to the guilt.

Let go and live the life you wish. Love yourself.

Express yourself If you already love yourself, or manage to start doing so, the next best step may be to begin expressing yourself. If you believe that showing off your less socially-accepted sides is like being a photographer in the sense that you have to wait for the right moment, please see this from a different perspective for just a moment.

For example, use the perspective of a kid.

It is funny how as kids, we were able to have so much fun from playing with so little: for us guys, we pretended to be superheroes on the playground, or pretended to be fighting each other with cool weapons. Or sometimes, with a little “imagination,” we would go on adventures within a box. Not only was imagination required for these things, but a release from self-awareness.

As adults, or just really old children, we have such an acute sense of self-awareness.

We can no longer lose sight of ourselves and our presented image.

Away with that. If someone asks you who

you are deep down, scream it out loud, “My heart is calm and pure… pure padawan!”

If you are listening to the Pokemon route two theme song through your Beats while taking a test in a PC lab on campus, and a cutie sits next to you, don’t worry if he or she can hear it through your Beats. Blare it louder. Well maybe don’t blare it, the objective here is to not go overboard, but just do not hide it.

If he or she is impressed in your tastes, then that is a great sign. Ideally, you should want to be with someone who compliments the life you live and love, not someone who will change minor details about you to fit their liking.

You may be saying: I do not care about love, show me another reason why expressing my full self is important. In this case, think of yourself as a set of shakers. You have a salt side and a pepper side, or a light side and a dark side if you wish. Sure, salt may be good on some food, but without pepper, it can be a little bland sometimes.

Same goes for pepper. Certain food is better with both, just like certain situations in life are better with all your sides in play.

Forgive ostracizing Make no mistake, you will be ostracized at times if you choose to fully express yourself. However, in general, many people think those who are made fun of a lot are the ones with the viewpoints needed to change the world. After all, if everyone were like Spongebob (that is, people who are willing to show their nerdy sides), then it would literally be impossible to have any Squidwards (that is, those who get mad at those who are willing to show their nerdy sides).

That is easier said then done, of course.

When we find ourselves in silent situations that are full of sound — quiet laughter when we enter a quieted room — our courage is tested. So much courage is needed for an individual to be willing to fully express themselves because being accepted into a group of real chill guys is a powerful force in every young person’s life.

Because of such, you may get angry and say: you real chill guys have taken away my life, but there is one thing you cannot take away, my pride! So what are you waiting for? Tear another strip out of my heart by popping another balloon.Try not getting angry toward the people who ostracize you, but instead be forgiving of them.

In the end, we are all quite capricious souls. Today one thing is nerdy, but the next day it may not be. So do not worry about current trend. Each generation seems to laugh at the current fads, but follow them religiously after time has passed.

There was a large turn-out at the “International Food Tasting Party,” Saturday in the Student Center Ballroom.

Community members, CSC faculty, and students showed up to enjoy the great food and entertainment from all around the world.

A cookbook was handed to each person who attended the event as they entered the ballroom. The cookbook has recipes from Ethiopia, Togo, Russia, Japan, Jamaica, Vietnam, China, Mali, Germany, France, Brazil, and America. The International Club prepared some of the recipes, which started their day off at 7 a.m., Saturday.

The food was served in a buffet style system. After getting plates piled high with food people sat down at round tables to eat.

The entertainment started after everyone had been served and seated.

The MCs of the night, Bethany Bergstrom, freshman of Axtell, and Nabin Shrestha, sophomore of Kathmandu, Nepal, introduced the International Club President, Yanrong Liang, junior of China, who showed videos that previous international students.

Next, the United States National Anthem was sung by Lane Swedberg, junior of North Platte; Zachary Henderson, junior of Douglas, Wyo.; Brendan Mead, senior of Knoxville, Iowa; and Scott Reffert, senior of Omaha.

A flute and piano duet, performed by Sophia Zhang, freshman of

China, on flute, and Pamela Shuler of Chadron, on piano came next.

Twelve international Job Corp students, who are refugees from another country, sang two songs.

Kishawn Tualaulelei, sophomore of Kailua Kona, Hawaii, performed a traditional Hawaiian dance. The dance was beautiful and had the whole crowd captivated. Mercy Gagnon, senior of Togo, Africa, performed a traditional dance with the assistance of Anna Dembele, freshman of Mali.

Jacob Almanrode, junior of Chappell, took the stage next with a piano piece he created himself.

It was very interesting to see the Japanese tea ceremony that was demonstrated by Analise Garland, freshman of Wall, S.D., and Yurika Koga, junior of Japan.

Sofia Trefilova, freshman of Russia, and Maria Evtodieva, freshman of Russia, brought a taste of Russian music to the event, which was sung in their native language.

The last event of the night was calligraphy, a form of art, performed by Heather Ong, freshman of Singapore, who drew mandarin letters.

“I would like to thank our officers, Doris Liang, Mercy Gagnon, Eunice Songthangtham, Zoe Leishman and Kelly McNabb, for being team leaders and bringing all the students together,” Michele Rickenback, the International Club sponsor, said. “Everyone did an awesome job organizing, cooking, entertaining, and cleaning. It’s a big event and hard work, but as always, they provided a fantastic meal and program. Too, the club would like to thank everyone involved. Without the help of so many volunteers and campus staff this event would not be possible.”

She is only one of six women who has reached the 1,000 point mark and the 500 rebound mark. She is ranked eighth in D-II for her 14 double-doubles this season.

Stone led the team in scoring against CSU-Pueblo, Saturday. He also posted five rebounds in the competition.

Stone also added 10 points during Friday’s game against UCCS. He now totals 106 rebounds and 237 points this season.

The CSC women’s basketball team lost to the 10-13 University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Lions on Friday in Armstrong. The Eagles were unable to defeat UCCS with a loss of 81-73.

“I thought we didn’t play very smart with turnovers on the offensive side, but we played hard,” Head Coach Tim Connealy said. “I was proud of the hustle that the girls put in. They played hard and we were able to catch up in the second half, but we were unable to finish it.”

Forward Kayli Rageth, senior of Kimball, and Dallas Shaw, junior of Buffalo, Wyo., scored 15 points apiece as the lead scorers.

Other double-digit scorers for the Eagles were guard Kate Simonton, junior of Bakersfield, Calif., with 13 points and guard Kattie Ranta, senior of Rapid City, S.D., with 12 points.

Ranta also led CSC with seven rebounds and five assists.

The Eagles trailed at halftime, 3928, but managed to catch the Lions in the second half by knotting 62 with 5:49 remaining. However, they could not maintain the momentum.

The Eagles outscored the Lions from the field with a 66-60 lead, but were out-

scored at the free-throw line 21-11.

The Colorado State University-Pueblo women defeated Chadron State, 8064, in Armstrong on Saturday night.

The ThunderWolves, now 20-5 overall and 16-5 in the RMAC, led 46-31 at halftime and their high percentage shooting continued in the second half to propel them to a 16-point victory.

Pueblo’s leading scorer, Alex Evans, senior of Louisville, Colo., was 10 of 13 from the field with 22 points. Taylor Fox, senior of Santa Cruz, Calif., Pueblo’s leading scorer on the year at 14 points a game, poured in 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds.

Ranta, who became only the 10th Chadron State women’s basketball player to score over 1,000 points for her career, led the Eagles.

Coming into Saturday, she only needed 22 points to reach the illustrious barrier and she did so going 11 of 20 from the field for 24 points.

She now ranks 10th in women’s scoring history.

Rageth and forward Maddie Metzger, freshman of Liberty, Texas, scored 14 and 11 points respectively.

The Eagles, now 4-21 and 4-17 in conference play, will wrap up their season this Saturday against Black Hills State University, Spearfish, at Armstrong. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.

Eagles lose 1, tie 1 before 2 game cancellations Conor Casey Reporter Colorado School of Mines defeated the Chadron State Eagle’s softball team, 11-3, in the first conference game for both teams on Saturday in Sterling, Colo.

The 3-team pod, originally set to be played in Chadron, was moved to Sterling, Colo., because of poor weather conditions.

However, only two games were finished on Saturday and Sunday’s were cancelled.

The Eagles, who are 3-8 overall and 0-1 in the RMAC, scored first when Rebekah Anthony, sophomore of Monument, Colo., was moved home on a bases loaded walk from Katelyn Kruger, sophomore of Highlands Ranch, Colo.

Mines, 5-6 overall and 1-1 RMAC, answered behind 14 total hits with two runs

in the third, two more runs in the fifth, and seven runs in the sixth and final inning taking control of the game.

Chadron State’s Courtney Lecher, freshman of Fort Collins, Colo., homered in the bottom of the sixth scoring two runs, but the spark was not enough to close the gap on the Orediggers.

Sarah Knudsen, senior of Parker, Colo., Breeze Phillips, sophomore of Evergreen, Colo., Shea Graham, sophomore of Colorado Springs, and Casey Polk, junior of Golden, Colo., also recorded hits during the game.

The Eagle’s second game of the day against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs was stopped in the third inning due to bad weather. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Chadron State plays next this Saturday in Denver against Metro State University.

The first game of the double header is set to start at noon.

Track team prepares for RMAC indoor championships Throwers set new school records and mark career bests at the Joe Davies Open Meet in preparation for championships Christopher Smith Reporter The CSC track and field throwers flourished this past weekend while participating in the Joe Davies Open Meet at Colorado School of Mines, Golden.

There were at least a dozen entries and most schools were RMAC schools.

CSC’s Alyssa Norton, senior of Rushville, won the shot put event with a mark of 48-3/4. Norton is the schools current record holder in shot put. This weekend’s throw is 14 inches shy of her record.

Cyndi Thomas, senior of Omaha, threw her career best this past weekend 44-8 1/2 finishing third in the shot put event. CSC sophomore Mel Herl and freshman Keri Ruff, both from Eaton, Colo., finished fifth and sixth respectively in the shot put.

In the 20 pound weight-throwing event Herl led the Eagles by placing third at 53-8 1/2, while Norton was fourth and Thomas was fifth.

For the CSC men, Kyle McCarthy, junior of Aurora, was third in the shot put at 48-11 1/2 and sixth

in the 35-pound weight throw with 49-11 1/2. Daniel Sotelo, sophomore of Grand Island, was sixth in the shot put.

The women’s team remains in the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Poll, but they have dropped six spots from No. 19 to No. 25 this week.

The team will be participating at the RMAC Indoor Championships this weekend in Alamosa, Colo.

The Mari Sandoz Chicoine Atrium was filled with the melodies of classical and jazz music; performed by the Department of Music Faculty at 3 p.m. Sunday. bringing some musical warmth to the cold snowy day.

Despite the cold snowy weather an audience of 100 people ventured out to hear the faculty display their many talents.

CSC’s Music Department hasn’t always put on a Faculty Recital, but for the past seven years it has been an annual event that allows the teachers in the music department to showcase their musical talents. This gives students a great opportunity to see their professors perform.

The Music Department is clearly talented as performances such as a guitar solo, entitled “Beautiful Love” by Victory Young, performed by Music Instructor and Guitarist for the Professors of Jazz, Charles Carey,

filled the Atrium with a beautiful, jazzy melody. Music Associate Professor and Music Department Chair, Una Taylor, brought some culture to the concert by singing three German songs.

Along with bringing culture to the campus with their performances, it also allows the faculty to have fun and listen to each other’s performances. Music Associate Professor, James Margetts, who performed a piano solo entitled, “Ruvido ed Ostinato from sonata No. 1”

by Alberto Ginastera, and has also been a part of the Faculty Recital for a few years now said, “My favorite part about it is that we get to hear everyone shine in their own area.”

Other performances were done

by Director of the Music Industry program and Music Professor, Sandy Schaefer; a member of the Music Adjunct Faculty, Pamela Shuler; and Music Accompanist, Kimberly Murphy. As well as performances by Music Assistant Professor and CSC Show Band Director, Sidney Shuler; Music Associate Professor, James Margetts; a member of the Music Adjunct Faculty and Upward Bound Test Coordinator and Academic Advisor, Lauren Stephens; and Music Associate Professor, Michael Stephens.

New Royalty named at Mr. & Mrs. CSC Pageant Mackenzie Watson Contributor

The second annual Mr. & Mrs. CSC Pageant took place at 9 p.m., Thursday, in the Student Center Ballroom. Jazz Bozner, junior of Rock Springs, Wyo., and Mercy Gagnon, senior of Togo, Africa, were crowned Mr. & Mrs. CSC 2014.

Students started lining up 30 minutes before the doors were opened.

“I came to support Hector; he is my homie,” Lindsey Pierce, freshman of Gillette, Wyo., said. Pierce was one of the many members of the audience that attended the pageant to support their friends.

The doors were opened and the mock pageant was kicked off by the contestants performing an opening dance that was choreographed by a few CSC Dance Team members.

The contestants were then introduced one by one: Hector Bustillos, freshman of Gillette, Wyo.; Gabriela Perez, freshman of Elk Point S.D.; Bozner; Gagnon; Alex Rodriguez, senior of Carolina, Puerto Rico; Shanda Shappell, freshman of Malcolm; Xavier Kvistad, junior of Crawford; Miranda Karn, sophomore of Holdrege; Sid Campe, freshman of Eagle, Colo.; Autumn Dunn, freshman of Fresno, Cali.; Jesse Bleidt, freshman of Lewellen; Teren Hanson, freshman of Evansville, Wyo.; Cash Weber, freshman of Hemingford; Taylor Cobb, sophomore of Colorado Springs; Michael Madkins, senior of Sacramento, Calif.; SaDee Olson, sophomore of Crawford; Brandon Hamar, freshman of Minden; and LeAnn Francis, freshman of Gillette, Wyo. As the contestants changed for their next event, CSC Voice Contestant Rico Collins, freshman of Colorado Springs, took the stage. While he sang, the MCs Justyn Anderson, sophomore of Las Vegas, and Josiah Lee, junior of Colorado Springs, danced in the background. The audience could not stop laughing as the MCs interpretive dance continued.

The next event was the swim suit competition. In this event the students showed off skin; a lot of skin.

“I liked the swim suit part. I have always dreamed of being a swim suit model,” Bozner said.

Mr. & Mrs. CSC 2013 took the stage next to give the contestant a little advice.

“You need more sunscreen you’re going to burn,” Mr. CSC 2013, Zach Sandstrom, senior of Chadron, said.

CSC Voice Runner-up, Zachary Henderson, junior of Douglas, Wyo., raised goose bumps as he sang “Wake Me Up” by Avicii.

The contestants then took back the stage to perform their talent. Bustillos literally kicked off talent portion of the competition with his dance which included high kicks, crazy spins, and numerous other moves. Other contestants that danced across the stage were Bozner with a disco piece; Gagnon with a dance from Togo; Shapell with some hip-hop moves; Cobb with a “Little Miss Sunshine” themed dance; and Bleidt brought the judges to their feet with his “Macerana” Madkin’s also danced, bringing the 90s back with the Carlton, made famous by “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Madkin’s had a few of his friends join him on stage trying to teach him how to twerk but he stuck to the Carlton.

Other talents included singing by Perez, Weber, and Francis; Rodriguez and Olson read poetry; ribbons by Hanson; gymnastics by Karn; and card tricks by Hamar. Campe and Dunn performed a hilarious skit that showed the spy theme, while Kvistad also did a skit made famous by Kevin Hart.

“My favorite talent was Mercy’s dance,” Brittany Oddo, junior of Peoria, Ariz., said.

At the completion of the evening wear competition the judges, Miss CSC Rodeo Queen, Bailey McLean, freshman of Sheridan, Wyo.; Miss Ogallala Round Up Rodeo Queen 2014, sole returning judge, Laramie Schlichtemeier, sophomore of Ogallala; CSC The Voice Winner, Fredrick Culp; and Mr. /Mrs. CSC 2013 People’s Choice, Kirby Krogman, left the room to choose the top three male and female contestants.

While the judges deliberated, Anderson and Lee pulled students from their seats to compete in a Catwalk Competition.

Shelby Bozner, sophomore of Rock Springs, Wyo., won the competition, even with a limp.

The top three males and females were then called to the stage to answer questions. The top males were Bozner, Bleidt, and Bustillos. The top females were Perez, Karn, and Gagnon.

People’s Choice 2014 went to Gagnon and Weber.

Third Attendant went to Karn and Bustillos; they each received sweatshirts.

Second Attendant went to Bleidt and Perez; they each received a Kindle Fire.

Mr. and Mrs. CSC 2014, Bozner and Gagnon, each won an iPad Mini.

The night could be summed up as “…so much skin and twerking,” which was repeatedly said by Anderson.

CSC's 'Birds' land new name, new nest Kali Blevins Contributor The Birds, formerly the Jazz Birds, debuted in a new location Thursday. Because their former venue, Wrecker’s Roadhouse on Main Street is closing, the musical ensemble, which features CSC students under the direction of Professor of Music Sandy Schaefer, found a new nest to perform its talents in. That new venue is the Bean Broker at the corner of Second Street and Chadron Avenue.

The Birds decided to change their name from The Jazz Birds to The Birds, because they felt that only having ‘jazz’ in the name did not describe all the different types of music the band performs.

The band plays 50 to 60 songs from a variety of genres, including funk, soul, and the blues. It also plays jazz with “witty, wry vocals,” Schaefer said, and other songs that work for the band.

Schaefer also said he was happy the Bean Broker wants The Birds to play there, enabling the group to keep playing.

“Having the ability to play like this has high impact learning,” Schaefer said. “Students go out on stage and we instantly

know what they do or don’t know; improvisation, crowd’s reaction, what works and what doesn’t.”

Lauren Morris, 21, junior of Denver, from The Birds said, “Moving to the Bean Broker is a really good opportunity since we have the chance to open up to a new audience. People who have young children or weren’t comfortable going to a bar might feel more comfortable here.” She also enjoys singing with The Birds since there is no other way to play and sing in a group like this that plays “older” music for college students where people are able to come and listen to them perform.

The Birds plan to perform every other Thursday at 8 p.m.

Actor tells students be bold not timid Sarah Townsend Contributor At 7 p.m., Tuesday, Chadron State College was graced with the presence of Jeffrey Tambor, a widely known actor and inspirational speaker. Tambor gave a talk titled, “Performing Your Life,” to a very receptive audience in Memorial Hall Auditorium.

Tambor grew up in San Francisco and found his love for acting while watching college students perform at San Francisco State University, the school of which he would eventually become a graduate after studying acting. He went on to receive his Master’s degree at Wayne State University, Detroit, Mich.

He began his acting career doing repertory theater in Milwaukee, Wis., but eventually moved to Broadway in New York City, N.Y. and started being more known in the acting world. He moved to the screen with his role in the movie “...And Justice for All” acting as Al Pacino’s half-crazy law partner. Tambor is best known for his work in the television shows, “The Larry Sanders Show,” as the character Hank Kingsley and in, “Arrested Development,” as George Bluth Sr. and his own twin brother Oscar Bluth. You may also recognize him as The Mayor of Whoville in, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” or from the Hangover movies in which he played Alan’s father, Sid. He has played some voice characters as well in some widely known cartoon productions. He voiced the King Neptune in, “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie,” and the Big-nosed thug in the Disney movie, “Tangled.”

When asked if he preferred acting on screen or being the

voice of a cartoon character, “Acting is acting is acting is acting, it’s all the same,” he said.

He also said that while he loves doing on-stage acting. Now that he is a busy father of five, four of which are under ten years old, he prefers the silver screen.

While acting is his true passion, Tambor has come to find that he loves speaking to students about living life to the fullest and finding a purpose for their lives. Working as an Assistant Professor at Wayne State University, he encountered many talented young people that were not reaching their full potential. Tambor used examples from his life, both darker and more comical to inspire the audience Tuesday evening. He had the audience laughing throughout, but also created some very touching moments when he called individuals up on stage while telling stories from his youth.

His focus was asking the audience, “What’s keeping you?”

He wanted the audience to ask themselves why they stop pursuing their passions; he called this finding their story. He wants students in particular to find this story and try to over come it because everyone has a destiny, a calling to become the people they are meant to be, and that they should not fall into what society wants them to be.

Tambor was very adamant about students being proactive and being bold enough to network with people to better their careers. He even gave out his personal email to certain individuals from the audience in order to foster this idea.

When asked what advice he would give to an aspiring actor, he said, “You need to not be afraid of contacting people, don’t be stupid about it, but ask and be bold!”

He also states that the hardest part of acting is the rejection.

His way of stating it was much more entertaining. “The hardest part?” he said, “No no no no no no no no no no no no yes no no no no no no. Estimate the number there, but that is the hardest part.”

The evening with Tambor that CSC got to experience was very uplifting and inspiring. He used his childhood, acting career, and fatherhood to connect with the audience and inspire everyone to find their purpose and overcome anything getting in the way of that purpose.
