Big Event directors, adviser to travel to Texas A&M CSC Assistant Professor of Communication Shaunda French; Jessica Orose, 21, senior of Piedmont, South Dakota; and Alyssa Sanders, 21, senior of Dalton, will present at The Big Event’s One Big Thanks Conference Saturday at Texas A&M University, College Station. French is the adviser of The Big Event and started it at CSC in the spring of 2013. Saunders and O’Rose are co-directors for this year’s fourth annual The Big Event.

“It’s such an honor and privilege to present at the conference for a third straight year,” said French. “I’m thankful that CSC has been able to maintain such a positive relationship with Texas A&M and grow The Big Event here in our community.”

Child Development Center sells pies for fundraiser The Chadron State College Child Development Center is selling “Village Pie Maker” pies for a fundraiser to improve their Nature Explore Outdoor Learning Environment.

Orders will be taken until Feb. 12 and the pies will be available to pick up after 4 p.m. Feb. 23 in Burkhiser Room 231. The available flavors are apple, berry medley, blackberry, blueberry, cherry, cran-apple nut, peach, raspberry/peach, rhubarb, and strawberry/ rhubarb.

The pies are $15 each and accepted types of payment include cash and checks. Checks should be made payable to CSC CDC and should be given to Child Development Center Director Lona Downs. Email lvroman@csc.edu with orders and send the money through campus mail.

Lifestyles Editor A jury trial for former CSC student Timothy C. Jungquist originally scheduled for Jan. 28 and 29 in the Dawes County District Court was cancelled. It is expected that he will enter a plea on Feb. 12 on Motion Day in the Dawes County District Court, Chadron, according to a Dawes County District Court spokeswoman.

Jungquist was arrested by Chadron Police Oct. 8, 2014, in connection with an alleged first-degree sexual assault in Andrews Hall that reportedly occurred Sunday, Oct.

5, 2014, Chadron Police Department and Dawes County Sheriff ’s officials said.

He was arrested after the alleged victim, a female, reported the assault Oct. 7, 2014, police stated in a press release. The Eagle does not publish the names of victims or alleged victims of sexual assault.

Jungquist was released from Dawes County Jail Oct. 15, 2014, after posting a 10 percent of $50,000 bond, following a bond hearing that same day. His original bond was set at 10 percent of $150,000.

The fall 2013 campus directory lists Jungquist as a freshman of Pegram, Tennessee, majoring in phys-

ical education and health (K-12). In April 2014, he was sworn in as an at large senator to the CSC Student Senate. He is no longer serving as a CSC student senator.

Jon Hansen, vice president of enrollment management, marketing, and student services, said Oct. 22, 2014, that Jungquist is, “no longer a student at Chadron State College.”

Hansen was unable to comment on the status of Jungquist’s enrollment, if Jungquist withdrew himself from class, or if he was administratively withdrawn at CSC under the Family Education Rights Protection Act.

CAB approves 2 more clubs Justine Stone News Editor Two clubs – Art Guild and Pitch – were approved as clubs in CAB. Pitch club will meet in the Red Room at 7 p.m. Sundays.

Clubs have spent $62,387.05 and have $91,677.86. CAB has spent $7,610.59 and has $1,389.41.

Open forums for constitutional changes for Student Government will be from 4-5 p.m. today and from 3-4 p.m. Monday in the Scottsbluff Room.

Vice Chair of Public Relations Kalen Grint told CAB representatives to email him any information about events they want on the slide show in the Student Center at kalen.grint@ eagles.csc.edu.

Grint said the wildlife clubs is putting on an ice-fishing tournament Sat-

urday at Box Butte Reservoir.

Director of Student Affairs and Student Activities and Recreation Chris Green told representatives to email him or Student Affairs Graduate Assistant Ryan Parriott if they need supplies for an event from Walmart from 10 – 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Admissions Representative Justy Bullington said Eagle Leader applications are due at the end of this week.

She will hire about 60 students to help with several different jobs during New Student Orientation. The Eagle Leader positions are paid.

Student Trustee Mikayla Gallagher reminded representatives that applications for the student trustee position are due tomorrow in Enrollment Management, Marketing, and Student Services Vice President Jon Hansen’s office.

Student Senate President Katrina Hurley said there will be a table in the Student Center from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. today and tomorrow for clubs to sign up to host a booth at Spring Daze.

Jamie Utt is presenting in the Student Center Ballroom at 6 p.m. tonight and at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

Faculty and staff appreciation night is at the wrestling dual 6 p.m. tonight in the NPAC. There are also wrestling duals at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The theme for the basketball game Friday is pajama night and the theme for Saturday night is hometown throw down. The women’s games start at 5:30 p.m. and men’s at 7:30 p.m. The Nest plans to hand out Eagle wristbands for the first half of the women’s game and the first 10 minutes of the men’s game Saturday.

Senate petitions open, 1 empty position Justine Stone News Editor Chief Justice Coy Clark said the Student Senate positions open for the spring elections are as follows: senator at large (six); Liberal Arts (three); B.E.A.M.S.S. (three); E.H.P.C.P.S.W. (three); vice president; president. Petitions for Senate are due to Clark March 23, hearings are at 6 p.m. March 29, opinions are released at the Senate meeting April 4, elections open at noon April 15, elections close at noon April 21, and results will be announced at 5 p.m. April 21. The new senators will be sworn in at the regularly scheduled Senate meeting April 25.

Former senator of E.H.P.C.P.S.W. Kali Ritterbush resigned from her position through a letter to Clark.

A letter to Student Senate President Katrina Hurley stated personal reasons for the resignation. Ritter-

bush did not respond to messages by press time.

Hurley appointed Anas Haddadi to an at large senate position, leaving only one open position on Senate.

Senate allocated no more than $2,000 to bring Tom Krieglstein, a career-planning speaker, to CSC the second week of April.

Hurley said the Spring Daze Committee is still looking for another band so she will bring a Spring Daze budget to the Senate meeting at 5 p.m. Monday.

Taylor Osmotherly was appointed to be the Platinum Eagle Chair Member. Former Chair Lane Swedberg recommended Osmotherly for the position.

Senator at large Tate Jensen said he is working with Keep Chadron Beautiful and SWAN to increase recycling on campus. Since Keep Chadron Beautiful doesn’t recycle plastic bottles, Jensen is working with

SWAN to make arrangements to recycle plastic bottles. He said he is working with Project Strive to apply for a grant through Recycle Nebraska to receive more recycling supplies. He said he is also talking to CSC alumni for donations for recycling.

Tri Beta, a biology honor club, was approved by Senate to be a CAB affiliated club.

Vice Chair of Finance Molly O’Connell said she will ask for an allocation of no more than $2,700 for zorb racing and bubble soccer at next week’s meeting. Zorb racing is giant inflatable hamster balls that people can race in and bubble soccer is a game of soccer with people in giant inflatable hamster balls. These events are on Feb. 20.

The lease for the equipment is about five years long. She is asking if Senate would pay for half of the lease. Right now, the total monthly cost is $514 but she said they could push this to next school year because of all the allocations of money that are being given this semester.

Calling all watchdogs For years, senior CIA officials have intentionally deceived parts of the agency workforce by sending internal memos containing false information about sources and operations overseas, according to current and former U.S. officials who referred to the practice as “eyewashing.” The tactic was described by agency veterans as being an infrequent but important security tactic to protect vital secrets.

It is done by inserting fake communications into routine cable traffic within the CIA, while using separate channels to convey the accurate information to the cleared recipients. While some claim it is necessary to the security of some operations, some cite it as a significant potential for abuse.

Federal law makes it a criminal offense when a government employee conceals, covers up, falsifies, or makes a false entry in an official record, and according to an article in the Washington Post, legal experts said they knew of no special exemption for the CIA. Although the CIA’s missions regularly involve carrying out operations with the intent to deceive foreign governments, it seems fundamentally wrong to aim the same level of deceit at employees of the department.

Column Welcome to CAB Art Guild and Pitch Club!

Art Guild is a group of student artists who get to have a fellowship and work on service projects, hold art sale fundraisers, and take an annual trip to speak with real world artists and visit various museums.

Pitch Club meets at 7 p.m. Sundays in the Red Room to play pitch, the card game. If you don’t know how to play, that’s okay. If you come on Sunday nights you can come to learn an exciting new game.

Not only that, but there are no concrete rules governing eyewashing. In one case cited in a Washington Post article, the recipients of an overriding message were told the eyewash was the only cable that would go in agency records and the cable they were receiving would be removed from the system. That cable was later traced from an unpurged email trail.

While the CIA and other intelligence agencies in the United States are trying to secure more ways to watch the people, what are the people doing to watch them? They are asking for permissions from the government to override encrypted codes on smart TVs and other objects found in ordinary households, but if the CIA is already lying to people within the agency, there is a chance they are already concocting plans to spy on us in our homes.

A journalist’s mission should be to take a stance and be a watchdog of the government. And with the surfacing of the information that the CIA is being deceitful, it is safe to say there are some journalists out there that are fulfilling the mission quite well. However, there is more work to be done, and no journalist, or aspiring activist of any sort, should let an opportunity to be a watchdog pass them by.

We are excited to have these new clubs and can’t wait to see what enrichment they bring to campus.

Becoming involved in clubs on campus is a great way to meet new people who share common interests and create new networking opportunities.

CHANGE: just do it Eli Smith Reporter As normal, everyday people we grow accustomed to comforts from an everyday schedule. We go home, turn on the television, watch a football game, or do anything at the end of a long day at work. Sometimes, this can turn into a reoccurring cycle. It’s good to have the comfort of familiarity when we go home, as it puts our mind at ease. However, this comfort can also come with danger.

Complacency is known as the tendency to be satisfied with the way things are. In many ways this is a good thing, as we cannot constantly be upset with things without bringing ourselves down. However, too much complacency can be a bad thing.

When we go through the same routine, we become content. We are happy with going back to the same thing after the busyness of a hard work day (or a tough day at college). But being too content leads us to accept things as they are. We do not seek

change in this state.

Change is a powerful and terrifying word to the content individual. We see something different coming into our calm and perfect world and resist. We deny that reality and substitute our own as our preference. With this mindset, we see change as not necessary.

But it is a necessity. It was seen as such a necessity that President Barack Obama used it as the centerpiece of his 2008 presidential campaign. That simple word aided him in becoming the 44th president of the United States. Change is powerful, and in order for us to achieve great things we must embrace

it. If we find that the change is unwelcome, we can just change it again.

That is the beauty of change. Change is something that stands as an ongoing and everlasting process. We should strive to try new things on a regular basis.

Complacency and contentment stand as enemies of change. “Why do something that could affect my life like that? I’m already happy with what I am.” Thoughts like these are dangerous. It prevents us from learning.

It prevents us from growing. It prevents us from becoming the men and women that we are meant to be.

You may say that it is hard for a college student to become complacent. We are never given a schedule we can get used to for long. But when we return back to the campus from our breaks we can come back to doing the same things we are used to. We return to our regular clubs, go to regular sporting events, and surround ourselves in an atmosphere we can feel comfortable with.

New students are especially vulnerable to this, as they are sometimes wary to in-

According to national studies, over 40 percent of college students engage in episodic drinking, which is defined as having 4-5 drinks consecutively.

Furthermore, 50 percent of minors have reported they find it easy to obtain alcohol. College is a time where students are going to explore and experiment with numerous different things; however, making a college campus a dry one does not necessarily make it safe.

The intention of having CSC be a dry campus is to discourage underage drinking and, for those over 21, safe

drinking. However, the only precedent it sets in place is for students to get drunk off campus and then stumble back to the dorms, or even worse, drive back to the dorms in their drunken state.

In some cases, students end up drunk and belligerent in an unsafe environment, putting them in a vulnerable, and possibly dangerous situation. Fifty percent of sexual assault cases occur while the victim, or assailant, are intoxicated. There are numerous universities paving the way in alcohol consumption on campus; allowing it has allowed them to better regulate it, even sell it in places on campus.

Perhaps it is CSC’s turn to lead by example and better our institution by presenting students with real world freedoms, rather than attempting to put students off drinking through the threat of punishment.

With this in mind, we have one question to answer: How do we beat complacency?

The answer to that question is a little different for everyone. We are each unique individuals with our own ways to reach conclusions. An answer found by one person may not be the answer for another person.

But there is one quote that we can come back to that can help us.

Just do it.

The immortal words of Shia LaBeaouf are said in passion and fire. “Yesterday you said tomorrow. Just do it!” Most people just laugh at his words, but he leaves us with an important message.

That club you were thinking of joining.

Join it. That race you were thinking of running. Run it. That idea you want to suggest to your superiors. Suggest it.

Live your life with that same fire. You will never know what will happen until you try.

The Eagle is a public forum, making it the perfect place for you to reach the masses with your thoughts and ideas.

The room was packed, every seat in the house was full. The lights dimmed down and a spotlight was focused on the stage.

Out stepped a member of Chadron High School’s FFA Chapter, welcoming Temple Grandin, professor of animal science at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, to the stage.

After spending the day talking in sessions on specific topics about autism and cattle handling, Grandin took the stage Thursday night to talk about her life and how autism led her to where she is now.

When Grandin was about 2 years old, she was diagnosed with autism, but her parents did not let her become a stereotypical autistic child. They pushed her out of her comfort zone and forced her to become comfortable with social situations of all sorts.

They urged her to get jobs as soon as she was able, and sent her on trips to visit family.

One of the most pivotal moments in Grandin’s life was when she was in her teens. Her mother told her that she was going to visit her aunt for either two weeks, or for the entire summer. Grandin was given the choice of deciding how long to stay, but not going was not an option.

So off she went to her aunt and uncle’s ranch in Arizona, where she was first introduced to ranching and the cattle industry. This trip sparked Grandin’s interest in changing the way the cattle industry looked at handling methods.

During the talk, there was one point that Grandin kept going back to.

This is just one example of how Grandin can take a cattle handling facility and improve the way that the cattle respond to the environment. Throughout the talk, she identified several easy ways that ranchers can improve their facilities. One was by moving cars or other foreign objects from the line of sight of cattle while they are passing through a facility, and another was by arranging the facility in a curve so that the cattle think they are going back to where they came from.

Grandin tied her life story into a lesson about identifying the type of learner that a child is, and then pushing them to stretch their comfort zones, making them more functioning members of society. With that it is no excuse for an autistic kid to hole himself in his room because of the diagnosis. She suggested to parents in the audience that if they have autistic children, they should be putting them in situations to prepare them for school and other social settings.

Mathews managed to collect 11 total points on 1 of 4 from the field and 9 of 12 from the freethrow line, which was enough for her to lead the Eagles team in scoring.

Daysh managed to chip in 10 points on 2 of 7 from the field and 6 of 7 from the free-throw line. The Eagles only managed to dish out five assists on 14 baskets, while the Skyhawks managed to pass 10 assists on 26 baskets. Graham and Allegria Chisom, senior of Wichita, Kansas, handed out two assists apiece to lead the Eagles, and Keren Boyce, sophomore of Arad, Israel, collected the other assist.

The Eagles were also stagnant on defense, allowing the Skyhawks to score 78 points on 36.2 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from the 3-point line. The Eagles also lost the rebound battle, 55-37, and allowed the Skyhawks 21 offensive rebounds while the Eagles only collected 11. Daysh led the Eagles in rebounding, collecting eight, and Pearce was second-leading rebounder with seven, the duo combined for 15 out of the team’s 37 total rebounds. Block and Chisom collected one block apiece to give team two total blocks. Graham managed to collect three steals and Knowles collected two. The duo combined for five of the team’s seven steals. The Eagles just couldn’t find a recipe to stop the Skyhawks from scoring.

The Eagles will play in the Chicoine Events Center against Colorado Christian University, Lakewood, Friday and Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Saturday with both games beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Jones broke the indoor 800-meter dash school record. He set the record at 1:53.73. The previous record was 1:56.19, set by former Eagle Zac Metz in 2006. After the conversion, Jones’ time will drop to 1:50.93. It was only the second time Jones ran the 800 in college.

Reuwsatt won the 60-meter dash, setting the record at 7.69, which is a tenth of a second faster than the record she set in 2015. She also won the long jump and automatically qualified for the National Indoor Championships with her jump of 20-1 3/4.

Do weapons deserve a spot on college campuses?

The issue of guns and where they should be allowed continues to be a heated debate.

It seems that the federal government and anti-gun groups want to limit gun ownership as much as possible. In the meantime, many states are rushing to enact laws that protect their gun rights. One way states plan to do that is by enabling college students to carry guns on campuses.

According to Students for Concealed Carry, some states such as Utah, Colorado, and Mississippi require public colleges to allow campus carry. That may surprise many people as many more states try to enact similar legislation. Recently, Texas joined the list that allows carry on college campuses. Florida and Kansas, just to name a couple, are going through similar processes. Without a doubt, there are advantages and disadvantages to allowing students to carry.

Against the Grizzlies of Adams State, the Eagles struggled to shoot, particularly from behind the 3-point line. CSC shot nearly 40 percent from the field, but only managed to hit 4 of 21 from outside. The Grizzlies hit 60 percent of their shots, including nearly 40 percent from long range. CSC lost the game with a final score of 94-78.

Junior Warren Gordon, of Indianapolis, led the Eagles with 18 points. Sharif Black, sophomore of Detroit, added 11. Jay Feltson, senior of Saginaw, Michigan, grabbed a team high nine rebounds, along with six points. Eight of his rebounds were on the offensive glass.

Three Grizzlies put double-digits in the

scoring column. Shakir Smith, senior of Tucson, Arizona, led all scorers with 28 points, shooting 9 of 14 from the field and only missed 1 of 8 free throws. Kendyl Grover, senior of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, finished with 21 and Joe Bell Austin, senior of Seattle, added 15.

Against ranked opponent and RMAC leader, Fort Lewis College, the Eagles improved on the offensive end but still couldn’t pull out the win, losing 90-72. CSC managed to hit 6 of 18 3-pointers, and 25 of 60 overall. The Skyhawks are now ranked No. 15, according to ncaa.com.

“In the second half (against Lewis), we had a hard time guarding them because they had so many weapons and a lot of sets we hadn’t seen,” Black said.

The Skyhawks shot 56 percent from the field and 35 percent from the 3-point line.

college shootings. Supporters argue that many shootings take place when the victims are helpless, like college campuses.

The idea is that we put firearms in the hands of students and teachers, that way they can defend themselves. Another argument is that people who carry guns are not the people causing harm. Those people are the ones trying to prevent crime; it is the criminals that do not abide by the law. Many people support the idea that they have to protect themselves, because they can’t expect anyone to do it for them.

Many people cite the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution; it is their right to carry firearms.

However, there are several disadvantages to college campuses allowing firearms. First, do we want all students to enter the classroom with a gun on their hip? Many students will probably feel uncomfortable if that is the case. Some people will lack the training necessary to

carry guns in public, an issue that we deal with outside of campuses. In addition, allowing more people to carry guns would lead a reasonable person to believe that a situation could turn lethal much quicker.

It seems to be common practice that retaliation is more extreme when guns are involved. In the heat of the moment a college student could make a bad decision that they will regret. Many would argue that college students are emotional people, and access to guns could be a problem for themselves, dorm staff, or teachers.

Correctly implemented college campus carry laws should be a positive. It should increase protection for college students and teachers. However, we could see major implications if we do not take precaution. The students and teachers carrying need to be familiar with firearms. Special training should be considered for people wishing to express their Second Amendment right on former gun-free zones.

Men’s, women’s teams ranked in top 25 nationally William McLaughlin Reporter The CSC track and field team hosted its annual Don Holst Twilight Open Friday and broke nine meet records. According to the NCAA D-II Indoor National Rankings from U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, CSC’s men team is seated No. 14 and the women at No. 24.

Sprinter Zerek Jones, senior of La Junta, Colorado, led the charge breaking the indoor 800-meter dash school record, running it in 1 minute, 53.73 seconds. The previous record was 1:56.19, set by former Eagle Zac Metz in 2006. With the time, Jones is a provisional NCAA qualifier.

“Zerek looked good from start to finish,” Head Track and Field Coach Brad Gamble said. “We knew he was capable of running sub two minutes and he showed it with relative ease.”

Jones’ 800 time, after conversion, dropped to 1:50.93 due to the size of CSC’s track and altitude. He ranks ninth in D-II entering this weekend.

On the men’s side four other meet records were set.

Damarcus Simpson, sophomore of Lafayette, Georgia, was a double winner in the long jump and 60. Simpson won the long jump on his first attempt going 24 feet, 7 1/4 inches. He missed the meet record by one inch that was set in 2007 by former Eagle Jourdin Holden. Simpson’s 60 time of 6.8 in prelims and 6.76 in finals

shattered the previous record of 6.88 set by Alex Graham, a former Eagle, in 2013.

Another double winner for the men was Alejandro Garcia, senior of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, winning the mile in 4:27.31 and the 3,000 in 8:55.9. His 3,000 time is also a meet record, breaking his previous record of 9 minutes flat, which he set in 2015. Martin Moriel, senior of Phoenix, won the 400, running 50.12, breaking former Eagle Phil Rivera’s record of 50.27 set in 2012. Skylar Hoopes, senior of Lusk, Wyoming, broke the meet record in pole vault clearing 15-9 1/4, easily. The former record stood at 15-6 1/4, set in 2009.

The women broke four meet records.

Stachia Reuwsaat, junior of Rapid City, South Dakota, won the 60, running 7.69, a tenth of a second faster than her previous record of 7.79, set in 2015. She also won the long jump, qualifying for the National Indoor Championships, with a jump of 20-1 3/4.

Tiffany Thomas, senior of Kingston, Jamaica, broke her former record in the 400 of 58.39, which she set in 2015, by almost a full second, running 57.77 to win the event.

Nicky Banzhaf, junior of Chadron, also broke the meet record in the 3,000, running 10:45.75. The previous record was 10:53.52, set in 2007. The fourth meet record was set

by Mel Herl, senior of Eaton, Colorado, in the weight throw. Herl, who is redshirting this season, won the event as an unattached athlete throwing 62-7 1/4. The previous record stood at 61-11, set in 2011. Herl also won the shot put throwing 46-4 1/4.

The Eagle wrestlers traveled to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to compete in the 2016 RMAC Wrestling Championships at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. The RMAC partnered with USA Wrestling, the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation, and the U.S. Olympic Training Center for these championships. This was the first RMAC-only wrestling championship tournament since 1996, and it was also the first collegiate wrestling tournament at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

Six Eagle grapplers placed in the top six, and the team finished the tournament sixth overall with 68.5 points, two points shy of fourth. California Baptist University, Riverside, won the championship title with 133.5 points.

Taylor Summers, junior of Plymouth, 133-pounds, was one of three CSC wrestlers that progressed to the championship round.

Summers earned a 19-14 and a 5-1 decision to advance to the finals round where he faced No. 3 Martin Ramirez, senior of Adams State University, Alamosa, Colorado.

Ramirez took the match with a 10-4 decision leaving Summers as the runner-up.

“I think (this season has) been eye opening for a lot of guys, especially the younger ones who haven’t been through a grueling season like this,” Summers said. “The competition is always tough and you just have to be ready to go every time. I think there are a handful of guys who are capable of wrestling at a really high level right now and are knocking at the door to take that next step. It’s hard to paint a picture on the season at this point, we all have high goals and we have to keep moving forward and working towards them right now.”

Terrance McKinney, sophomore of Spokane, Washington, 149-pounds, won a 9-2 decision over his first-round opponent.

He kept up the momentum with a 0:58 pin over California Baptist’s redshirt sophomore Bradford Gerl which led him straight to the championship round where he met Drew Schumann, senior of Colorado Mesa University, Grand Junction, in the finals, but gave up the match with a 5-0 decision.

This was the first time that McKinney and Schumann have wrestled, and the match put McKinney second overall.

“I’d say I competed hard but I’m never satisfied, cause if you’re not first you’re last and if I took first, I’d be looking to beat the kid by more next time,” McKinney said.

“I’d like to score more the next dual so there’s no doubt what the outcome of the match will be.”

He netted a 14-3 major decision and a 9-7 decision over his first and second round opponents, respectively, that took him to the final round where he wrestled Nolan Kistler, sophomore of California Baptist, who turned the match in his favor with a 10-3 decision leaving Helmick second overall.

“I’ve been wrestling better as of late after a slow start,” Helmick said. “Just been pushing hard in the practice room and trusting the results will come.”

Caleb Copeland, junior of Bennett, Colorado, 174-pounds, won his first match with an 8-5 decision, but he was pinned by his second opponent. He won his third match against Bruno Nicoletti, sophomore of Colorado Mesa, in a 9-3 decision. He then advanced to the consolation finals where he fell 8-0 to Christian Smith, sophomore of California Baptist, to end fourth place in the tournament.

Placing fifth at 285-pounds, Cooper Cogdill, redshirt freshman of Chadron, was pinned by his first opponent, but he regrouped and pinned Colter Bentley, sophomore of Colorado Mesa, in 4:51. He was pinned again by his third opponent, but he then beat Lewis Arendall, freshman of Western State Colorado University, Gunnison, in the placement match with a 5-3 decision.

Cogdill’s only losses were to the third and fourth place finishers.

Shane Rodenburg, freshman of Kent City, Michigan, 184-pounds, finished the tournament in sixth place. Rodenburg beat his first opponent with a 7-0 decision, but dropped the second match to Jacob Waste, junior of California Baptist, who was the 184-pound champion. Rodenburg advanced to the placement rounds in the consolation bracket, but dropped the next two matches leaving him sixth overall.

The other scorer for CSC was Joshua Miller, sophomore of Bennett, Colorado, 141-pounds, who scored an 8-3 decision over Lukas Erickson, freshman of Colorado School of Mines, Golden, in the first round.

“The team is a group of guys who really care about each other and compete for each other,” Helmick said. “The team is improving a lot everyday but we are still far from our goal.”

The Eagle wrestlers have a busy week coming up with three home duals. They are scheduled to compete against New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas, at 6 tonight. RLA teaches students to be prepared for disasters Melanie Nelson Reporter CSC students learned safety precautions while playing bingo at RLA’s event Doomsday Preppers 7 p.m. Monday. Kent RD, Jazz Bozner, hosted the event in the Gold Room.

“It incorporates bingo with CSC emergency procedures and general precautions to take in extreme situations,” Bozner said.

After every blackout, the winner received a survival prize, and then Bozner read to the group the proper procedure to deal with events such as fires or tornadoes.

“I liked the prize options because they are actually something useful in case something would happen,” Angela Cruz, 20, junior of Valentine, said.

Cruz won a kit that included freeze-dried chicken and rice, a blanket, hand warmers, duct tape, and matches.

She said she will be putting it in her car for emergency situations.

Due to low attendance, all participants who stayed to the end received a kit.

Hot chocolate and fruit snacks were also provided to the 31 students that signed in. Students also came away with new advice.

CSC students over come the many factors of fear Evan Brooks Reporter The CSC Residence Life Association hosted its annual Fear Factor event Saturday night in the Gold Room.

Many students showed up either to participate or simply for the entertainment. Upon entrance, students were to write their name on a ticket if they wished to be a contestant in the event. Ten names were randomly drawn to determine who would participate and soon after 9 p.m. the games began.

“Students always get a kick out of this program because it’s so much different than any other program we provide,” High Rise Resident Adviser Yadira Gurrola, senior of Scottsbluff, said. “We try to mix up as many different challenges as we can, whether food, physical, mental, or verbal.”

A slight mimic of the television show, this Fear Factor was based on a point system.

Rather than eliminating contestants each round, all participants were able to do all events

and those with the top five highest scores won prizes. This proved to be an effective strategy to get students to stay for the entire program.

“The polar challenge was probably the most difficult for me,” Daniel Sullivan, junior of Omaha, said. “It wasn’t all that hard, but it was just hard trying to battle through the cold feeling.”

Some other challenges required contestants to put dog food in their mouths (not to consume it) in addition to consuming some pretty questionable concoctions.

“The one I found most difficult was the drunken fishing,” Anh Le, sophomore of Hanoi, Vietnam, said. “I couldn’t get used to the goggles. So, I couldn’t catch any.”

“I really enjoyed doing this program because it’s always fun and a great way to get students involved with RLA,” Gurrola said. “We primarily use this program to get students to come out of their shells and interact with others on stage.
