Investigation into CSC student’s death continues Jordyn Hulinsky, Sarah Townsend, & Janelle Kesterson Managing, News, & Lifestyles Editors Amending an earlier statement, Dawes County Attorney and Coroner Vance Haug issued a press release Tuesday stating that “foul play and all other possibilities continue to be investigated” in connection with the death of Fatima Larios, 19, sophomore of Seaside, California.

In an original press release issued Saturday morning, Haug states, “A preliminary investigation of the scene leads Vance

Haug, the Dawes County Attorney and Coroner, to believe that foul play is not involved…”

The new press release states, “A forensic autopsy has been completed and additional forensic testing continues to assist in the final determination of cause of death.”

Tuesday’s release did not explain why Haug changed his position.

Haug states no additional information will be released at this time. Police are asking anyone with information involving this death investigation to contact Chadron Police Department at (308) 432-0510 or the Dawes County Crimestoppers at (308) 432-0519.

The CPD found Larios in High Rise at 2:30 a.m., Saturday, and she was pronounced dead after police were called to the dormitory.

Larios was listed on the CSC’s softball roster as No. 20. She was a second baseman and an outfielder.

Two more senators resign; 1 cites poor leadership by execs.

Jaycie Cheatham Reporter Senator of Liberal Arts Courtney Bustillos and Senator At Large Lindsey Schanaman handed in resignations this week.

Bustillos, a senior of Torrington, Wyoming, said Wednesday she was disappointed with the way the sitting executive board runs Senate. She added, however, she is interested in seeking a seat next year. Schanaman was far more vocal.

“Senate is supposed to be a group of students and faculty that represent the rest of the student body in a respectable manner. However, that’s not what’s happening in the Chadron State Student Senate.

President Dillon Spies and Vice President Taylor Strong take issues into their own hands and make the rest of the senators feel as though they don’t have a say in what’s going on. There is little to no communication between the executive members and the senators.

There are many decisions that are made by the executive board behind closed doors, which causes a lack of transparency, which was a goal of Dillon and Taylor’s when they were running for their positions. Neither of them has followed

through with their “goals”, which, to me and the few I have talked to about the issue, makes it seem as though they were just in it for themselves.

I resigned because there is a lot of very unprofessional leadership going on within Senate.

The leadership is not the leadership that I would like to be a part of any longer.

For example, there was a senator during my last meeting that was trying to speak her opinion about a topic and Taylor Strong continuously interrupted her, making her feel as if her opinion wasn’t going to be taken into consideration. That senator sat down and wouldn’t give any input the rest of the meeting because she felt like she wasn’t needed.

I feel as though because Dillon and Taylor are President and Vice President that they think they have all the power in decision-making.

They’re giving themselves a bad reputation throughout much of the student body as far as their leadership qualities and integrity is concerned,” Schanaman said.

Bustillos’ and Schanaman’s resignations came one week after Marci Luton’s.

Luton resigned for similar reasons, her letter to the editor explains her position. (See page 6).

Senate President Dillon Spies said he apologizes if he seems like a person who doesn’t take the senators opinions into consideration.

Chief Justice Coy Clark is looking for committee members for constitutional courts preliminary petitions next week to get procedures in place. The committee should be comprised of senators, at large members, and the court justices.

Treasure Hannah Love reported $65,493.25 in unallocated funds.

The petition for the appointment of senators has been updated. To access the petition go to www.csc.edu and search for petition for appointment and follow the directions.

AFB is still looking for three at large committee members. Students must be in good academic standing and have a GPA of 2.5 to apply.

The applications deadline is Feb. 16.

Career and Academic Planning Services Director Deena Kennell requested $750 for refreshments and prizes for the spring Career Fair. The event is from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Feb. 13.

Students should come to learn about potential jobs, internships, and to gain valuable contact information.

Laure Sinn is updating the files and would

appreciate it if senators and advisors could get her their club agreements and list of members as soon as possible.

Student Trustee Jacob Rissler wants to invite Tracy Shuck, dining services director, to next week’s meeting to discuss more details about adding a F’real machine to the coffee shop.

Josh Mayer, a student who is petitioning to be on Senate, spoke up about his disapproval of the F’real because it would promote bad eating habits, which conflicts with the new Health 101 magazine, he said.

Rissler and Sinn defended the treat declaring it’s all about moderation and a balanced diet when it comes to health.

Faculty Advisors want to remind students that February is advising month.

Michael Hall, head of the Informational Technology Committee, apologized for the delay of the new Internet. The paperwork is in, but now they are waiting for the service provider to test if the campus can handle the new speeds, he said.

Syerra Wycoff-Bagshaw, senator at large, brought up the wasp issue on campus. Rissler suggested Wycoff-Bagshaw bring the issue up to Vice President of Finance Dale Grant.

Conferencing coordinator seeks $75k for Galaxy Series’ concert Jaycie Cheatham Reporter Conferencing Coordinator Shellie Johns scanned CAB representatives’ IDs as they entered Tuesday night’s meeting.

This was the first test of the new implement to record student attendance at events as a safety precaution.

Johns also revealed that Galaxy Series is having one more event. She hopes it will be a concert of a well-known country artist on April 24, but nothing is official.

Johns is working with the rodeo club on having the event at the Rangeland and Agriculture Center and Pavilion and shutting down campus dining services for the day to have a BBQ instead.

Johns’ estimated cost for the event are around $75,000, but warned The Eagle newspaper to refrain from publishing that number.

“I can tell you it (the concert) is going to cost me $75,000, which I don’t want to see in The Eagle newspaper. So whoever is writing that, don’t write that,” Johns said.

Grounds supervisor Lucinda Mays is in need of group volunteers to help her with horticulture instillations around campus.

Mays can be contacted via her cell phone 308-430-4186. Students must be able to work in two-hour sessions at a time.

CAB treasurer reported $8,408.52 in unallocated funds.

Vice Chair of Records Stephanie Steele still needs updated packets, adviser agreements, and constitutions from several clubs.

Not updating these files could affect the clubs’ budget hearings.

The free movie night scheduled March 15 has been moved to March 22.

Free bowling is this weekend 8-11 p.m., Saturday and free movie night at 6:45 p.m.,

Feb. 8. The movies playing are “American Sniper,” “Seventh Son,” and “Spongebob Squarepants 3D.” The amended bylaws of section three regarding club attendance policy were discussed.

The new bylaws will be in affect after Senate approves them. Any absences prior will not count against the clubs.

The Big Event staff is still requesting clubs’ pledge numbers.

Feb. 13 is the “pink out” themed basketball game. Feb. 14 is the “nerd/senior night” themed basketball game.

BRIEF Rules of the Court Committee needs members The Constitutional Court, the judicial branch of CSC’s student government, is looking for two students at large to serve on a Rules of the Court Committee.

Until the committee is in place and procedures are adopted, preliminary forms for filing for a Constitutional Review may be received by requesting them at the above email address.

Stop telling our reporters what they can report Earlier last month Kirby Delauter, a councilman in Fredrick County, Maryland, threatened to sue the local newspaper, the Fredrick News-Post, if it published his name without his permission.

Since Delauter is a public official, The NewsPost responded to the councilman’s threats by publishing a tongue-in-cheek editorial titled, “Kirby Deluater, Kirby Delauter, Kirby Delauter,” which used the councilman’s full name 25 times.

The First Amendment protects journalists and our right to publicize information that is of public interest. We fight to uphold our press freedom.

Anything said in a public meeting is fair game to a reporter. Only in rare circumstances do public officials reserve the authority to restrict what reporters are allowed to report on.

However, this might be a difficult concept for some on campus to understand. During Tuesday’s CAB meeting, Conferencing Coordinator Shellie Johns told our reporter that they couldn’t publish information about a concert that is in the works.

This was said after Johns had already told that information to the assembled CAB representatives.

Johns’ comments were made in a public meeting before representatives who have both voting rights and the authority to decide where a portion of the student activity funds go. Anything said during those meetings are a matter of both public interest and public record, and we are obligated to report on them.

The problem we keep encountering is that people on campus do not understand how media works. We enjoy the same protections and freedoms as any commercial newspaper. Therefore, we assert our independence; you do not get to decide what we do or do not publish.

If you would like to write for The Eagle, our doors are always open. Everyone has an equal opportunity to come and join our staff. We would happily welcome more reporters.

‘Men have become the tool of their tools’ Richard Heule III Columnist Last weekend, when I was in Scottsbluff doing some shopping, I decided to go to a chain restaurant for a burger. While I was in there, I was looking around, and I saw something that struck a chord with me. It was a little kid, maybe three or four years old, playing a game on a touch screen monitor.

I watched him play a game of foosball, and in the middle of him shouting at the game, I was struck with a sense of dread. I don’t know why, but watching this kid play foosball got me thinking about a lot of things.

In this day in age, we live in a world purely centered on convenience. If you want something, you can get it dropped off to your house in a day or two. You don’t even need to go outside, because the delivery guy can just slide it in the door, and you can have whatever it is you wanted. Am I the only one who thinks that the rate at which we are advancing is frightening? I fear that one day, we will become so consumed in our

own want, and we will cease to exemplify the once vibrant human spirit.

As I watched this young man play his game, I felt emotions I hadn’t felt in a long time, one of which being a sense of nostalgia. When I was a child, we didn’t have touch screen games at our disposal. We had ball pits and slides, and they were the high point of going out to eat with your parents. And now, that entire experience has been replaced with a poorly programmed simulation. It sickens me. It sickens me to know that we have forgotten what it’s like to not be so dependent on our devices, and it makes me sad.

As I pondered these philosophical questions, I recalled my dad telling me about Henry David Thoreau. When I was young, he tried to get me to read his essay, “Walden.” I know a little bit about it, but I still haven’t read it. However, I found a quote that sums up everything I have been talking about. “Men have become the tools of their tools.” This is coming from a guy who was living in a time where the idea of a television was completely unheard of. I’m sure if he were to visit our time period, he would hop right back in the time machine and tell the people of his day, “Hey guys, we screwed up somewhere along the line.”

I didn’t stay long enough to see how his little game ended. By the time I was finished with my meal, I had become too consumed in my own thoughts to care anymore. I rarely ever go off on a philosophical tangent, but when I do, it’s because I get genuinely concerned about the future. In this case, I’m more concerned about whether or not people as a whole have become too engrossed with the technology around us. Perhaps it’s about time I read that book.

Columnist It goes without saying that music has taken many turns throughout the years, but lately the industry seems more and more corrupt.

My biggest problem with today’s music is that popular artists are not making music to spread their talent, but instead to find ways to make the quickest buck possible. Music used to be about sharing new ideas and thoughts, and expressing oneself and now it all seems to be centered on awards and who makes the most money. Let me be the first to tell you that no one becomes a musician solely because they want to be rich.

Taylor Swift is a prime example of how corrupt the industry is, as she has taken her music off Spotify, so she makes as much money as possible from people purchasing her music.

She has also recently trademarked lines to her songs, just incase she goes broke from music she can still fall back on personalized school supplies. Taylor Swift is a businesswoman, a great one at that, but she is not what music is about.

End rant.

When it comes to making music,

different genres have different forms.

The newest “hits” all seem to sound the same anymore with the tired chord progressions, singers belting out their highest notes with the help of auto-tune, and the most basic four-on-the-floor drum and bass beat.

Most pop songs follow some variation of a I-V-IV chord progression, and country follows a I-IV-V progression.

What this means is in the key of the song, they use those chords and build from there. For the most part, pop and country music are all pretty standard and passé.

This formula has worked for hits in the past, so it only makes sense to continue to color inside the lines, right?

Funk, soul and jazz progressions are

slightly more complex, and that gives the musicians room to play with.

What makes these genres interesting is that the music is about style and how you express yourself while playing the music. Plus, noteworthy improvisation adds to the self-expression and takes a level of skill, which will bring out true musicianship and creativity in the soloist. The sax lick in “Talk Dirty” is neither creative, nor noteworthy.

While we’re on the topic of instrumentals, the use of jazz instruments, such as sax and trumpet in modern songs, has become increasingly popular, and I can’t say I’m too terribly upset about it.

I would very much like to see this idea progress and bring more knowledge of the American music roots to the listeners, that is, as long as they continue with real instruments instead of the electronic choice. Nothing sounds worse than that piercing electronic shrill producers like to call a trumpet.

The world is not completely hopeless when it comes to music, so long as people pull their head out of the radio cave they’ve been hiding in for years.

Ashley Swanson on support for Marci Luton on the CSC softball team Senate resignation Dear Editor: This past Saturday, CSC lost one of its own and there are no words to describe the pain seen on faces across campus, especially those of the softball team.

Though I was not acquainted with Fatima, it was heartbreaking to see how hurt her teammates and friends were during Saturday’s basketball games.

While this situation is difficult for everyone at CSC, and for everyone who knew Fatima, it was nice to see the wonderful support each person gave to the softball team, and to those around them. Before each game there was a moment of silence for Fatima; the men’s team ran onto the court wearing softball T-shirts; and after the women’s game many of the women gave hugs to the softball women sitting in the stands, or consoled them.

There are times when people at CSC don’t get along and disagree with other individual people or groups on-campus, but when something tragic like this happens, those same people come together and support each other in every way they can.

Despite differences, CSC comes together as one family, leaving shoulders for others to lean or cry on; lending as many hugs as needed; being a listener; and/or just sitting with someone to let them know they’re not alone.

CSC has one of the best support systems I’ve ever witnessed, and with this system, even though it will be difficult, CSC will make it through this heartache one small step at a time.

Garrett Lower on ‘Senate leadership lacks transparency’ Dear Editor: I would like to comment on Spike Jordan’s article ‘Senate leadership lacks transparency’ (The Eagle, Jan. 29).

I have been off student Senate for a Semester now and looking forward to graduation. I attended my first Senate meeting as a spectator Monday Night. I was shocked to see the lack of Student Senators. Only one side of the room was filled!

How are voices being heard? Especially during the second semester when fund allocating for clubs and major events takes place. That’s an issue!

I would also like to comment on the issue of being transparent during the last meeting.

The process that the Chief Justice position was done the right way per our Constitution, but what was said to the public was something completely different per the feedback the senators had given on the topic. I believe that transparency to the public should be the number one priority in an organization. I believe that situation raised a red flag;

that maybe we need to rethink what were doing and get the record straight.

I applaud all the student senators who stood up against the appointment. They represented there constituents well. Honesty and Integrity go along way with me. I would like to congratulate student senate for appointing a Constitutional Court.

I would have personally would of like to see someone in the Chief Justice position with some Senate Experience however. Not trying offend the new justice I wish you well.

With that I would encourage students to get involved in there Student Government. I believe that there is great opportunity in the organization. It opened many doors for me and I enjoyed making a difference.

Remember the power rests in the hands of your Student Senators!

Dear Editor: Following the Senate meeting of Jan. 19, I was informed that Senate President Dillon Spies had planned to appoint Coy Clark as Chief Justice and to appoint a Constitutional Court as well. Following this, I was also informed that this plan had been in the work for months and the spot had been promised to Coy as soon as former Chief Justice, Jon Lordino, resigned his position. As soon as I was made aware of this I was distraught because of the planning of Senate’s President behind Senate’s back.

While President Spies is acting within his presidential power bestowed upon him in Senate’s Constitution, the planning of Coy being appointed as well as a constitutional court was done in shadows without Senate’s opinion being taken into consideration. The lack of transparency being the exact opposite of what Spies said that he would strive for as President.

Several Senators expressed their disagreement to what Spies had planned to do. During the meeting I along with several senators expressed our discontent with Spies’s decision especially with his choice to go outside of Senate to find a new chief justice.

While his explanation of finding someone without a bias to things going on within senate was a valid reason, in the end, it was an excuse because when taking the oath of Chief Justice, the new chief justice swears to uphold their office without bias; therefore, Spies’s reason would be invalid. I pointed out at the meeting and questioned Spies on his choice to appoint a constitutional court.

For the previous months Spies has reminded the senate (as well as The Eagle) that we needed more senators in order to obtain a full senate. With the appointments made to the constitutional court, Spies made the executive decision that those three students were more important on the Constitutional Court than making them Student Senators. I personally felt that having voting senators who have a say were more important than a constitutional court that had no voting rights.

Overall with everything that happened in that meeting, along with the conduct and execution of countless other things (which includes the Senate Conference) I believed my best choice as a senator was to resign my position and no longer be a part of a Senate. Dillon Spies and Taylor Strong make decisions and choices that I strongly disagree with. My hope is that my resignation will show Dillon and Taylor that they need to change how they are running things. But I fear that without any transparency as to what Spies and Strong are doing, everyone will be left in the fog and the senate will continue to disintegrate.

inging, dancing, cheering, and shirt ripping set the mood in the Student Center Ballroom last Thursday for the third annual Mr. and Mrs. CSC competition.

After 10 minutes, no seat in the Ballroom was left empty and those in attendance waited for the night’s master or ceremonies, Justyn Anderson, 22, senior of Las Vegas, and Jonathan Dunn, 19, sophomore of Harrison, to begin the show and welcome the first competitor on stage.

Collin Brook, 21, junior of Colorado Springs, Colorado, began the night with his celebrity impersonation of Richard Simmons. He brought four members of the audience on stage with him to perform. The contestants each took turns, alternating between male and female, on their impersonations leaving the audience laughing and cheering every time.

Each contestant then took the stage again, one at a time, and answered two questions. Some stayed in character from their impersonation and answered the questions as their character would, causing the audience to laugh and clap harder.

Talents ranging from reading poetry, singing, dancing, playing a recorder, and stand-up comedy entertained both the audience and judges panel. Between acts, Anderson and Dunn performed and pulled last year’s Mr. CSC, Jazz Bozner, 23, senior of Rock Springs, Wyoming, on stage as well.

The final category, evening wear, allowed contestants to strut their stuff on stage while wearing clothing varying from pajamas to evening gowns. Some even brought blankets, a pillow, and teddy bear on stage with them. Each contestant walked from the stage through the crowd and back to the changing area.

While the judges were excused to collaborate and choose a winner, the emcees pulled audience members to the stage and dance to “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira. The remaining audience cheered for their favorite performer and laughed as both men and women shook their hips to the beat. Two more students took the stage after and sang “Long Black Train” by Josh Turner.

The judges returned and six winners were announced. Lexis Ferguson, 19, sophomore of Casper, Wyoming, and Brook won third place and received $15 Subway cards. Gabriela Perez, 19, sophomore of Sioux City, Iowa, and Jesse Bleidt, 20, sophomore of Lewellen, won second and received headphones. The titles of Mr. and Mrs. CSC was given to Lane Swedberg, 22, senior of North Platte, and Haley Calderon, 19, freshman of Silverdale, Washington, won smart televisions. Swedberg and Calderon were also given crowns and sashes.

‘This season is for Fitty’ Jordyn Hulinsky & Evan Brooks Managing Editor & Reporter “Even when you’ve played the game of your life, it’s the feeling of teamwork that you’ll remember.

You’ll forget the plays, the shots, and the scores, but you’ll never forget your teammates,” Deborah Miller Palmore, basketball Olympian, said.

Fatima Larios, No. 20, sophomore softball player of Monterey, California, passed away early Saturday morning. Her passing has been felt campus-wide, but the loss hit the softball team the hardest.

Losing someone is never easy, but when you lose a friend, a teammate, a leader, and a family member, all wrapped into one person, it’s devastating.

“She was definitely a leader,” teammate Aspen Eubanks, freshman of Broomfield, Colorado, said.

“She led by example.”

Jessica Eatmon, senior softball player of Broomfield, Colorado, said Larios was going to be a leader, a power hitter, and a motivator this season.

The softball team was voted by RMAC coaches in January to finish sixth in the 2015 RMAC Preseason Coaches Poll. The team finished second in the conference last season and they plan to win the championship title this season. There are seven starters returning from last season.

“This season we are going to go as hard as we possibly can because that is how Fatima played,” Eatmon said. “This season we are playing for Fitty (Larios).”

Larios gave a motivational speech the day before she passed. She talked about her goals for the season. Larios wanted to “make noise in the RMAC and go to the conference tournament,” Eatmon said.

“This season, we will play for her and win the RMAC for her,” Casey Polk, senior softball player of Golden, Colorado, said.

“Our biggest goal for the season is to make it

back to the conference tournament,” Head Softball Coach Robert Stack said. “With the experience we gained by participating in the tournament last season, we are looking to build on that momentum.”

Larios was listed on the CSC softball team roster as an outfielder and second baseman. Polk said she was going to play third base. Larios played for Austin Peay State University as a freshman.

“We were very fortunate that Fatima chose Chadron State to continue her softball career,” Stack said.

As a teammate, Larios pushed her teammates to do their best and to work hard at all times.

“Fatima was the kind of person that would remind us all that the game was fun,” Eatmon said.

“We started playing softball because it was fun.

She was the spirit of the team. She made us all smile and laugh. She has the biggest heart and let us all know how special we were all the time. She had crazy stories and crazy swag. She was truly a beautiful person and an even better teammate.”

“She was the most amazing teammate,” Polk said. “She was always so positive and the hardest worker on the field.”

“Loud. She was the one to always motivate us to keep going even though we wanted to give up,” Eubanks said. “She was the best teammate I’ve ever had.”

“Fatima was a phenomenal team player,” Stack said. “In her short time with us, she had a tremendously positive impact on, not just the team, but everyone else who knew her.”

Stack said Larios was a natural at third base and in the outfield because of her “awesome arm.”

This weekend, the softball team dives into the season with a tournament at the Eckerd College Invitational in Clearwater, Florida.

The team will play two games Friday against Eckerd College and Barry University, two games Saturday against Saint Leo University and the University of Tampa, and two games Sunday against Palm Beach Atlantic University and Lynn University.

“We had our first practice back from everything on Monday and it was hard,” Polk said. “We would have random breakdowns and just needed time to sit and think. Tuesday’s practice was much smoother. We had a few moments of weakness, but each day we get stronger and embrace what we are facing. I think that we are ready to play in Florida and show the true strength of our family with the help of our angel.

“This weekend we want to have fun and just play softball. Fatima always said, ‘Win or lose, if you gave it your best shot than that’s all that matters.’ So that’s what we will do in Florida. We will give it all we have in her name,” Polk said.

“The goal for the weekend is to be competitive,” Stack said. “We have six non-conference games this weekend, followed by six more nonconference games next weekend. We will use these 12 games to see where our players are going to excel, on the field, in the circle, hitting, etc., so that when our conference season starts on Feb. 21, we are playing solid, consistent softball.”

Stack said he will use these games to try players at different positions to find the best positions for the team.

The team’s first home game will be March 7 against Black Hills State University.

Cutcher won the 200-meter dash and the 60 high-hurdles with a time of 22.99 seconds and 8.24, respectively. He also won the triple jump with a distance of 45-7. Cutcher was also a member of the 4x400 team that finished in first place.

Gorsuch set a meet, arena, and school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.67 seconds. She also placed third in the 60 with a time of 8.23. Gorsuch finished off with a fourth place finish in the 200 in 26.99.

Records set at Don Holst Twilight Meet Collin Brook Reporter Chadron State hosted the Don Holst Twilight Track and Field Meet Friday, with a showcase of event wins and broken records. At the end of the day, the Chadron State women’s team set six meet records, three arena records, and one CSC school record.

Stachia Reuwsaat, sophomore of Rapid City, South Dakota, broke the 60-meter record with a 7.79 second run, and set the long jump record at 20-3 3/4, breaking her own meet record set last year at 196. Both were record scores for the meet and the NPAC. Tessa Gorsuch, another sophomore of Rapid City,

South Dakota, ran the 60 hurdles in 8.67, which is now the meet, arena, and school record. Gorsuch won her event with a time of 8.78 in the finals.

The next broken record came from Tiffany Thomas, junior of Kingston, Jamaica.

Thomas ran the 400 in 58.39, coming close to the CSC record of 58.03 that she set earlier this year. Thomas was also part of the 4x400 team that set the meet record to 4:00:14. The team was combined of Thomas; Kelsy Wood, sophomore of Hemingford; Rochelle Nelson, senior of Kingston, Jamaica; and Shelby Bozner, junior of Rock Springs, Wyoming.

The women’s team wasn’t only setting records, they were also winning events. Nikki Glasson, junior of Wheatland,

Wyoming, won the 200 with a time of 26.54, and Mel Herl, junior of Eaton, Colorado, won the weight throw at 58-5 3/4. Miranda Karn, sophomore of Holdrege, won the 800 with a time of 2:27.46.

“I think hitting such good marks at the beginning of the season means our end-ofthe-season marks will be outstanding,” Karn said.

She also said she gives credit of the team’s success to more team-building and being more supportive of each other than in the past.

The men’s team did not break any records, but won plenty of events and continue to build momentum.

events on Friday. Cutcher won the 200 in 22.99, the 60 highhurdles in 8.24, and the triple jump at 45-7. Cutcher ran on the winning 4x400 relay team, alongside Lane Higgins, freshman of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; Jazz Bozner, senior of Rock Springs, Wyoming; and Martin Muriel, junior of Phoenix, Arizona.

Muriel also won the 400 with a time of 50.46.

The Eagle’s other event winners were Cody Davis, sophomore of Fort Morgan, Colorado, in the 800 at 2:04.47, and Skyler Hoopes, senior of Lusk, Wyoming, who pole vaulted at 15-3 1/2.

Women’s 3 home win streak cont. Mountaineers climb Christopher Smith Reporter The Chadron State Eagles women’s basketball team won two games at home this weekend taking on the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners and the Regis University Rangers, Denver, at the Chicoine Events Center.

Friday, the Eagles earned an impressive victory, 79-71, in a RMAC game against the visiting Roadrunners. This was the first win for the Eagles against the Roadrunners since February 2004.

“It feels really good to beat one of the top teams in the conference, it shows that we belong up there as well,” Kayla Matthews, freshman guard of Adelaide, South Australia, said.

For brief stints in the game, it seemed as if Metro State would continue its string of victories against the Eagles, closing the first

half with a 40-34 lead.

In the second half, the Eagles turned things around, shooting 59 percent from the field compared to Metro’s 33 percent. CSC’s second half shooting gave them the lead in the second half, and Metro could never regain the lead they once lost.

Leading the way for the Eagles was senior guard Kate Simonton, of Bakersfield, California, scoring 22 points, shooting 54 percent from the field. Freshman forward Maka Daysh, of Tauranga, New Zealand, chipped in 19 points in just 22 minutes.

Saturday, the Eagles took on another RMAC opponent Regis University defeating them 76-69. Once again a second half surge helped push the Eagles to victory.

Regis shot well in the first half, shooting 65 percent from the field, while the Eagles shot 43 percent.

Regis went into halftime with a 4432 lead before the Eagles came out

with a strong second half effort. The Eagles shot 52 percent from the field while Regis went cold, shooting 22 percent from the field.

CSC took a one-point lead, 7069, with four minutes left and defensively did not let the Rangers score again for the duration of the game.

“Second half comebacks have been key to many of our victories this season,” Matthews said.

The five starters scored a majority of the points. There was little point production from the bench, scoring only three points. Junior guard Allegria Chisom, of Wichita, Kansas, and Simonton both scored 17 points. Matthews helped as well scoring 16 points, shooting 9 of 10 from the free-throw line.

CSC will be hitting the road this week taking on Western State Colorado University, Gunnison, and Colorado Mesa University, Grand Junction, Saturday.

over Eagle wrestlers Janelle Kesterson Lifestyles Editor The Chadron State College Eagle wrestlers were delivered a tough blow Saturday as they competed against the Western State Colorado University Mountaineers, Gunnison.

The Eagles lost the home meet 35-6. Western won 8 of 10 matches.

Chance Helmick, freshman of Beatrice, 165-pounds, and Caleb Copeland, sophomore of Bennett, Colorado, 174-pounds, were both able to bag a decision against the stiff competition.

“I knew this was big for the regional tournament, and I knew it was a win I needed to have, so I made sure I was doing everything right and stayed focused,” Helmick said.

The Eagle wrestlers will travel to Pueblo, Colorado, to compete in the

Super Region 4 Tournament after they compete in three more duals.

“It’s a good win to build off of,” Helmick said. “But I know I have to keep looking forward and focus on one match at a time and doing what it takes to improve so I am prepared when the regional tournament rolls around because that’s when it really matters.”

Head Coach Brett Hunter is confident that the team will compete well not only in the three remaining duals, but also at the Regional Tournament.

“The main thing we took away from the Western States dual is that we have to be more consistent and we need to wrestle with effort as a whole,” Hunter said.

The next wrestling action will be away against New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas, New Mexico.

Men win with extra motivation Preston Goehring Reporter Metropolitan State University of Denver took an early 6-0 lead and never looked back Friday against the Eagles.

CSC never took the lead. The Eagles fell to Metro State, 72-60, at the Chicoine Events Center, dropping their RMAC record to 3-11.

Three players for the Roadrunners combined for 54 points to help Metro improve to a 12-2 RMAC record. Senior Nicholas Kay, of Tamworth, Australia, led all scorers with 25. Senior of Brisbane, Australia, Mitch McCarron, followed with 21. Will Sinclair, senior of Lilydale, Australia, added 11 points to go along with six rebounds.

The Eagles struggled defensively, giving up 34 points in the paint, along with 14 second-chance points.

Senior of Spanish Fort, Alabama, Kendrick Holliman, led the Eagles with 13 points. Roderick Butler, junior of De-

troit, and Christopher Smith, senior of Pasadena, California, each put 10 on the board for the Eagles. Senior of Ontario, California, Evan Brooks, couldn’t seem to find his rhythm offensively, finishing with eight points.

“Friday night, I thought we did a pretty good job competing,” Brooks said. “We just struggled to execute as well as we wanted to, and that was our biggest downfall.”

The Eagles bounced back the next day with a nail-biting victory against the Rangers of Regis University, Denver, 73-72.

At the half, Chadron State earned the largest lead of the game—10. The Rangers came back in a hurry in the second, outscoring the Eagles 40-31 after the intermission. With the game down to the wire, CSC took a three-point lead, thanks to a pair of free throws from Brooks. At the buzzer, Regis’ Spenser Reeb, sophomore of Broomfield, Colorado, hit a game-tying three, but his foot was just over the line, giving the Eagles a

one-point victory.

“Our biggest difference on Saturday was just more attention to detail,” Brooks said. “As unfortunate as it is, we had a little extra incentive to play our hearts out for Fatima Larios. We really wanted to get a win for her and the softball team.”

Brooks found his scoring groove, ending with 18 points. Josiah Lee, senior of Colorado Springs, Colorado, finished with 11. Junior Davante McCallam, of Miami, found his way into the scoring column with 10, six of which were from the line. As a team, the Eagles shot nearly 85 percent from the line, compared to Regis’ 72 percent.

“This win was big because it puts us in a position to make a run the last seven games,” Lee said. “We just tried to take our mistakes out and continue to play hard. This win felt great because it was more than just basketball, we played with someone in mind.”

The Eagles travel to Gunnison, Colorado, to take on the Western State Mountaineers Friday. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.

“Fatima was a tremendous person, friend, and teammate,” Stack said. “She will be missed greatly this year and years to come. We have been blessed by having had Fatima be part of our lives, even if it was a short time. We will remember her for the rest of our lifetimes. That passion and love Fatima had for softball has instilled a fire within us to play for her, her family, and each other this season.”

“Every game that we play this year is going to be special,” Polk said. “No other team has an angel like Fatima helping them out from above. One of her jerseys and her new glove will travel with us to every game and will be in our dugout. At home games, we will play Fitty’s favorite songs on our warm up playlist. We know that the community, student body, and families will help us with every home game.

Fatima touched so many lives and I know they will all be supporting her and us throughout our entire season.”

“I just want this experience to show everyone how truly short this life is,” Eatmon said. “Don’t forget to tell the people you love that you love them, hug longer, complain less, and love fully because you never know when someone can be ripped out of your life. ‘Extremities’ intended to provoke conversation Janelle Kesterson Lifestyles Editor On Feb. 12-15, the Theatre Program will be producing the play “Extremities” by William Mastrosimone.

This production considers issues that are hard to bring up, and even harder for an audience to hear. It breaches the matter of rape and rape culture.

It is an unfortunate truth that the subjects of rape and rape culture have come to attention recently.

The fact that these topics have been gaining clout is unfortunate because in order for exposure to happen there has to be a victim, and it is uncommon for people to be willing to

ransom themselves as a victim.

However, a way to discuss rape and rape culture without sacrificing a victim has been found. Theatre can be used as a scapegoat to discuss these sensitive issues.

Introducing the topic through theatre does not mean that the conversation will be easy, but it allows a safe environment for the underlying issues to be brought to light.

If they so choose, the audience can leave at the end of the show and never think about the fact that rape culture exists, or the production can be used as a means for the issues to be part of a powerful and moving discussion that continues after the conclusion of the production.

Ultimately, the production will

motivate the audience members to introduce the topic to their friends, and create the opportunity for meaningful discussion.

Scott Cavin, assistant professor of visual and performing arts, said that his goal for this production is to start a conversation about rape culture, what it is, and why it exists on the Chadron State campus.

Cavin is looking for help, understanding that the conversation will not be easy or comfortable. However, just because it is not easy does not mean that it shouldn’t happen.

Cavin encourages students, faculty, and staff to attend and experience the production. He wants to use this production as a means

to ignite thoughtful discussion regarding rape and rape culture.

Cavin is looking for faculty and staff interested in participating in talk-back sessions. A talk-back session directly follows a performance and focuses on specific topics relevant to the piece being produced and those viewing it.

The informative discussions will include the director and the cast of the production taking questions and comments from audience members.

The talk-back sessions are tentatively set to follow the performances on Feb. 12-14.

Mastrosimone wrote the play after meeting a rape victim whose attacker was released after he convinced the jury to doubt her testimony. As he walked out of the court room, he

whispered more threats to her.

In light of Title IX, and the increased awareness of sexual assault in the sphere of higher education, “Extremities” tells an important story on the stage of one woman’s worst nightmare.

Why should people see this play?

Why should people see this play?

Because rape is an issue that is big, and it has happened here. I know my first two years at Chadron I heard about it happening to someone each year. I don’t think a lot of people take rape seriously, but they should.

Because this production covers a topic that nobody wants to talk about, but one that we need to get more comfortable talking about.

Because making rape something that you’re afraid of makes it harder to deal with the problem.

What advice do you have for the audience?

Don’t be intimidated to see it, especially if something has happened to you or you know someone who’s had something happen to them. We are hoping that this is more of a positive talk-through than a negative conversation.

Black History Month

Suspend your disbelief. Productions have been done where people have gotten up and tried to stop the assault. It gets pretty intense.

Everything’s ok, it’s all safe, but it’s hard to watch. I see it every night, and it gets harder each time because they’re getting into the moment. I don’t see Doug any more, but Raul.
