Silverstein’s dark humor electrifies CSC’s Black Box by kelsey amos

The versatile Shel Silverstein, who was a poet, cartoonist, screenwriter, and artist, is often remembered for his children’s poetry, and books, which have been translated into 30 languages. However, in 1981, he started writing short plays, including “The Lady or the Tiger,” based on the classic story; he wrote many plays before his death in 1999, including the pieces that make up “An Adult Evening with Shel Silverstein,” which is replete with dark conflict, raunchy humor, and mature insight. Director Roger Mays and 19 student actors from the CSC Theatre Department bring this play to life in the Black Box Theatre. The play, which consists of 13 skits, will show at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 9-11, with a matinee performance at 2 p.m., Feb. 12. Tickets can be reserved by calling the CSC Box Office at 308-432-6360. Tickets are free for CSC students who reserve them in advance.

NSCS expands financial oversight of its colleges T.J. Thomson Executive Editor The Nebraska State College System has created a new position to oversee the accounting procedures of its three colleges and is seeking candidates to fill its newlycreated post of “Director of System wide Accounting.”

The system office posted the vacancy the week of Jan. 30.

According to the vacancy announcement, the new director will be responsible for: • Working closely with the college’s lead accountants related to annual financial statement preparation and the use of accounting systems • Lead periodic meetings with college accounting staff • Provide support and direction during audit visits at the colleges • Coordinate with college lead accountants to make recommendations to the NSCS Council of Business Officers related to internal controls • Conduct reviews to assure compliance with internal control policies • Prepare consolidated system wide financial statements and prepare and/or review periodic financial reports provided to the board of trustees. see ACCOUNTING, Page 3

Senate jumps into pool project, allocates $20,000 Sara Labor Lifestyles Editor Plans for the new pool were the main topic of discussion at Monday night’s Student Senate meeting.

Dale Grant, vice president of administration and finance, came to speak to Student Senate about the Armstrong renovations. Grant said that if the students are committed to a new pool, it would cost approximately $2.5 million. The school would enter a twenty-year bond, which would mean paying $200,000 a year.

“Those of you who visited the pool understand that everything is shot,” Grant said. He added that no matter how much money the school might put into the Armstrong pool, it would never be as inviting as a new pool in the PAC. “At this point,” Grant said “I just want to get a feel for how committed you are to this project.”

Senators asked if the possible raise in student activity fees could be waived in any way, for example if the money from current student activity fees used for the PAC could be put toward the pool. Grant said that it was possible, however, there

have been renovations done in the past few years, such as the renovations on the racquetball room, and the school continuously buys new equipment to replace worn out equipment.

“The PAC is always an ongoing project,” said Randy Rhine, vice president of enrollment, management, and student services.

Grant said that the new pool would be a process and at best the school will see it finished by fall of 2014, but more likely by spring of 2015.

Senate voted in favor of supporting the new pool, and allocated $20,000 for a project statement.

Tami Fosher, manager of RLA, and Mary Landen, Andrews Hall resident director, spoke about fitness equipment in the resident halls.

According to Fosher and Landen, RLA wants to get students out of their rooms and socializing, and often students don’t want to go to the PAC. RLA’s goals are to update the equipment in High Rise, Edna, and Brooks, and to redesign current areas and make them more appealing.

RLA would like to get new resistance bands, treadmills, ellipticals, televisions

to mount on the walls, and other new equipment. The final price is estimated to be around $32,000.

Fosher also said that this does not have to be a one-year plan, it may take many years to complete this project.

In other matters, Vice President James Bahensky said the Constitutional Committee is currently revising the Senate’s constitution.

Secretary Chrissy Black said that the walk-through results had been tallied.

Many students mentioned that they’d like to see improvements to technology.

She also said that the improvements to the library, including the coffee shop, have seen positive results. Students also mentioned things such as better exercise equipment in the dorms, bigger events and charity events on campus, and getting plasma screens in all the dorms.

Treasurer T.J. Thomson said there is $11,508 in un-allocated funds.

Jacob Rissler was approved as a senator-at-large.

Student Trustee Riley Machal said applicants interested in the Student Trustee position can get forms from her.

Applications are due to the VP of Student Affairs office by noon Feb. 24.

CAB allocates $5,300 toward ‘Release,’ movie night, bowling Kelsey Amos Reporter CAB members allocated money for three upcoming events during their meeting Tuesday.

The CAB account contained $15,470 prior to the allocations, according to Treasurer Samantha Evans CAB allocated $2,000 to Marty Lastovica and the Allies club to fund Release, an annual show that draws poets and artists from around the country.

Lastovica said the money will pay for the artists’ travel expenses and hotels, and Tshirts for the show.

‘Release’ is slated for March 24.

CAB allocated $1,500 for a free bowling event, which will be 9 p.m. to midnight, Saturday at SayaLanes on 10th Street.

CAB also allocated $1,800

for a free movie night, which will be Feb. 19.

Luke Wright, president, said the money was allocated early because there will not be another CAB meeting before the event.

Only two of the movie theatre’s screens will be showing movies because the other screens are under renovation, Wright said.

Club reps asked whether less money should be allocated, since fewer movies will be showing.

Wright said the event will be open to 300 students, as usual, because the two theaters should have enough room for that many students.

Evans reiterated that Feb. 23 is the deadline for clubs to sign up for budget hearings.

Adam Neumann, publicity coordinator, said he has a shorter attention span than a squirrel.

Accountant to monitor athletic funds, VP says Executive Editor

Chadron State is on the brink of hiring someone to fill the college’s newly created accounting position, which will monitor athletic department finances, CSC’s Vice President of Administration and Finance Dale Grant, said Tuesday.

Grant said that the position was not related to the NCAA’s investigation into alleged football fundraising violations.

“We started talking about this position before; however, the recent events have certainly reinforced our thinking related to this position,” Grant said.

Grant said talks about creating the position began in April 2011 after CSC Foundation personnel expressed concerns about several athletic coaches filing 1099 tax forms. Grant did not specify which sport those coaches were affiliated with, but said the practice of filing the 1099s made it appear as if those coaches were employees of the foundation instead of the college.

“We were concerned about the liability it put them under,” he said.

Grant added that the college interviewed candidates Jan. 27, and that he expects the position will be filled soon. The athletic department monitoring system would be launched soon afterward.

The vacancy announcement states that the System Office is seeking someone who holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field, and at least five years of experience in public sector accounting or auditing.

The NSCS will begin application reviews Feb. 27, the announcement states.

Before the 2003-04 academic year, each college in the NSCS was audited independently, said Dale Grant, vice president of administration and finance.

After that, “we went to a combined audit,” he said.

However, the move to a combined system had its problems.

“Ever since that time, the auditor’s office has brought up concerns that we [the three colleges] don’t measure things the same way,” Grant said.

A desire for a consistent and unified accounting approach among the three colleges is the reason for creating the new position, Grant said.

“It [the position] will provide consistency,” he said. “It will work similarly to an internal auditor in corporations.”

Grant said a starting-salary range of $60,000-$70,000 is “fairly accurate,” for a CPA holding the minimum qualifications.

Grant said that two representatives from each college, in addition to System Office personnel, would sit on the position’s search committee.

Grant and CSC Comptroller Julie Goodman will represent Chadron State on the committee.

Black History Month must be known better With February now upon us, so officially begins Black History Month. In the popular mind, it is thought that the month grew out of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, and it tends to get watered down with constant Congressional declarations of special weeks and months devoted to various things.

But in fact the history of this month goes back much further, and it offers more reason to recognize it than many people think.

It all began in the summer of 1915, the fiftieth anniversary of the liberation of the slaves, in Washington, D.C. An exhibition was underway, showing the history and thenprogress of African-Americans since liberation. Among the dozens of thousands of visitors was Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson, who after seeing the enthusiasm of the crowds decided to form an organization devoted to scientifically studying AfricanAmerican life and history.

Though more and more people were learning the history of African-Americans, Woodson wanted to take it a step further and in 1924, with the help of his fraternity Omega Psi Phi, Negro Achievement Week was born.

The week, however, was not a national phenomenon, as it was more linked as a marked week within the African-American and historical community. In fact, even in the 1920s the idea of considering African-Americans as significant was dangerous, with the Klu Klux Klan and like-minded forces having a great sway in the public mind.

In the 1970s it was finally recognized by the government as Black History Month.

Comedians today have occasionally joked about Black History Month being in February, the shortest month of the year. However, February is the special month mainly because both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass were born that month, Lincoln on Feb. 12 and Douglass on Feb. 14.

Black History Month is not some simple declaration made by the government to appease a race, or meet the levels of political correctness. It really was an genuine desire to show to America, then and now, that despite adversity and strife African-Americans have, collectively and individually, a great impact and stake in this country. We should all remember that.

Santorum’s moral compass is way off course

In his essay “Why I Am Not a Christian” Bertrand Russell wrote how the organized churches define morality as a “narrow set of rules of conduct which have nothing to do with human happiness.” He adds that when one argues that morals should be based on making people happy, the churches reply, “What has human happiness to do with morals? The object of morals is not to make people happy.”

That notion of morality still pervades much of American society, particularly when it comes to the homosexual.

We find this in presidential candidate Rick Santorum, the man who takes pride in his unreason. He’s Hell-bent (no pun intended) to make sure that all levels of government “protect” American families and children from the gays and their godlessness.

Many know him as the senator from Pennsylvania who said gay marriage is hardly different from “man on child, man on dog, or whatever the case may be.” Well, unless one comes from the Appalachians.

Santorum made it quite clear recently in Fulton, Mo., on Feb. 3 when he said to a gay man he didn’t deserve to have “special treatment under the law… it’s not a right,

Vets paid their dues, now Uncle Sam should too

As a U.S. Marine veteran, I’m currently using my Post-9/11 G.I. Bill to attend CSC, but lately I’ve been unable to receive my benefits that are owed to me. I have no grievances with how the school has handled my benefits in the past, and I have personally verified that the problems are not with the system here at CSC. The problems are at the Veterans Affairs system at the Federal level. I’m not the only one who is affected.

I have verified with at least 10 Marines with whom I have served who are in states ranging from Washington to Florida, and they too are experiencing delays in their housing allowances and book stipends. The Boston Fox News affiliate reports that the number of in Massachusetts is almost 10,000 delayed cases.

When I called the VA Education benefits hotline, I was informed that my claim was still “processing”, and that I would not be paid my stipend until the verification of my claim,

A glimpse into the past . . .

A new, revised catalog to come to Chadron State College – Feb. 11, 1955 – The plans for the catalog started in 1947 and since then, has had multiple revisions and re-writes. The catalog is a different size, type, and arrangement and is easier for students to determine what classes they are required to take. The most noticeable changes are that each division including language arts, science, education, and fine arts, among others, will have their own section in the book. It also includes 51 hours of required courses that each student must take no matter what their major or minor is.

Get the most out of your college education TREAT YOUR EDUCATION LIKE A JOB

I find it very interesting that most students approach education in terms of only the minimum requirements. If you were to buy a car, you would want the best car for your money, right? But when students pay thousands of dollars in tuition, they tend to ask only about the minimum requirements to pass the course or get a grade. How did society learn to approach education in this way?

What is your education to you? Are you paying $50,000 or more for a piece of paper that might help you get a better job or is it something more? When you attend classes do you view them as requirements or an opportunity to grow as an individual? Do you select professors based on the quality of instruction they provide or the ease with which they grade? Are you looking to be challenged or do you just want to get by?

For those of you who wish to get more than a piece of paper out of your college experience, I have a list of things that you can do to increase the value you are getting out of your education.

I always like to tell my students to approach their school like a job. In all reality, college is a great place to develop the work skills and discipline required to be a good employee.

Schedule study time and stick to your studies just as if you were working. The increased career fields and better paying job opportunities will be the payment you reap after completing your degree.

AVOID ONLINE CLASSES IF POSSIBLE

Roughly 80 percent of communication comes in the non-verbal form. Therefore, taking an online course often greatly reduces your ability to gain and retain information. I am sure that there will be a lot of education majors that will argue about the quality of education that can be possible through online access.

The short story is these courses are best for students who do not have the ability to attend a traditional class.

If you do have the chance to go to a traditional class, do so. You will learn much more from the professor and the interactions with your peers than what is possible through videos and discussion boards.

One of my biggest complaints about online learning is that questions that could be answered quickly inside the classroom usually take several emails to sort out in an online course. Additionally, it is far easier for a professor to detect when you are not picking up the information being presented inside a traditional classroom.

Often students who fall behind in online courses will stay that way because either the students do not request help or the professor does not recognize the problem.

GET TO KNOW YOUR PROFESSORS

I would recommend that every student go and meet with his or her professor outside the classroom once a quarter. If nothing else, stop by and introduce yourself. This will present a great way to check in on your progress in your courses and ask for additional resources if needed.

But most importantly, it demonstrates to professors that you are engaged. Professors will always take more time with and provide additional support to the students who are most engaged in classes.

SIT IN FRONT

Whenever possible sit in the front two rows.

If these areas are filled, sit towards the center of the classroom.

Sitting up front will score you more eye contact with the instructor and allow you to see the board with ease.

Sitting in front will also provide you with some additional motivation to stay awake as you are no longer hiding in the back.

Statistics have proven that where you tend to sit in a classroom often determines how well you perform in class. Sit in front and show the professor that you are engaged and ready to learn. You will find that you get more attention and your questions get answered faster than when you hide in the back.

TREAT CLASS LIKE A BUSINESS SERVICE

You are paying good money to learn skills, knowledge, and behaviors. Treat college just like everything else that you invest heavily in. Always be looking for an opportunity to get more value out of your dollar. If you are excelling in a course, there is nothing wrong with asking for additional sources to expand on what is normally presented in class. Professors are here to support your academic and professional growth. So, it is up to you to ensure that you are getting the most out of the money you are investing in yourself.

TAKE THE CHALLENGING PROFESSORS

I am sure that in your time here at CSC you will find two professors who teach the same course. One might grade easier than the other, or one might expect more from his or her students. I will always recommend taking the more difficult professor. If you are paying for an education, it should be the one that requires the most personal and academic growth within a classroom. Years after you graduate, you’ll never remember the easy professors, but the professors that challenged you will be remembered for the rest of your life.

At the end of the day, you can either pay money for a piece of paper, or you can pay that much for a piece of paper and an education. You can treat college as a four year exercise in discipline which requires little more than sitting in a classroom or you can use this time to develop yourself.

The choice is up to you. What are you going to invest in your education?

Paterno’s legacy shouldn’t be tarnished or forgotten Kevan Carr Reporter

Let’s not get sidetracked now, people. I know that the death of Joe Paterno struck an emotional chord with many who are knowledgeable about his career, but for those who it didn’t, I pity you.

The man was a legend. Not only was he the one of the most decorated coaches in NCAA history, he is a man who held high standards and expectations from the players he coached. Paterno was adored, ad-

mired, and idolized by many.

I know it is hard to believe that the man was innocent in the tragic scandal that fell upon Penn State. But how many times have you been accused of knowing something that you didn’t? Or been blamed for something you had no part of? It can happen to anyone.

I know people will say I’m ignorant, naïve, or something of the like. However, I just haven’t lost hope in all of society. I still believe there are people who are honest, innocent, and possess quality character; people like Joe Paterno.

You could say that Paterno wasn’t any of these things. Fine, but let’s not forget his history and reputation before saying such rash things about the guy.

Sure, it is your right to believe and say whatever you want about Paterno, but it doesn’t mean that you’re right, nor does it

mean that I’m right. No one is, because we each have the luxury of thinking in a way that suits our morals, values, character, and so forth.

With that, let me ask you this, who is the man who actually is facing charges in the crime against those boys and families? I can’t quite remember his name. Wait, it is Jerry Sandusky. With all the fuss over Paterno and his part in the matter, I forgot the guy who we should be focusing on.

I admit, it is possible Paterno might not have handled the situation effectively or didn’t do all he could have to make sure justice was served, but he wasn’t alone. Think of the assistant coach who brought the issue to Paterno. Think of the athletic director to whom Paterno brought the matter. All three of these men allegedly knew of what was going on, yet nothing was done?

However, we choose to fire shots at and

ridicule Paterno.

I’m not trying to sway anyone in any certain way regarding the issue. I’m simply stating we should look at the full picture and everyone involved rather than singling out the popular of the bunch to pick on.

Now, Joe Paterno, I’m sorry you had to go the way you did under the circumstances that you were in. I pay my respects to you as a coach, as a legend, and as a man, and it isn’t easy to see such an icon pass. I am saddened to think that it was possibly because of this hassle that you aren’t still here today, but I know that it’s probably better to be where you are now, away from all of the nonsense.

Rest in peace. I hope that the storm passes and when the wind dies down justice is found for the victims and their families, as well as Sandusky, Penn State, and the Paterno family.

The building was named after Ross Armstrong, longtime CSC coach, athletic director and dean of men. Armstrong also started the college's athletic hall of fame in 1983.

The Ross Armstrong Health and Physical Education Building was built in 1961, opened in 1964, and cost $600,000 to build. Beside having a gym, the building was also used for tournaments.

New bill introduced for Armstrong funding College and system officials travelled to Lincoln over the week of Jan. 30 to attend a hearing on LB1019 before the appropriations committee of the Nebraska Legislature.

The bill, if approved, would supply more than $13.7 million in funding for the renovation and expansion of Armstrong.

Chadron State College President Janie Park, Nebraska State College System Chancellor Stan Carpenter, and Ashley Reisen, CSC student-athlete, sophomore of Chadron, represented the college at the hearing.

Park said Friday that she spoke at the committee’s meeting, and supported what the bill’s progenitor, Sen. John Harms of Scottsbluff, said when he introduced the legislation.

Park said that the committee didn’t indicate when it would make a decision.

Park declined to comment on the project’s future if the legislature rejected the bill.

“I don’t want to speculate at this time. We are hoping Senator Harms' bill will be successful,” Park said.

Preparations for Armstrong pool begin Ashley Swanson Reporter Approximately 50 years old, the Armstrong pool has multiple problems.

"The liner, mechanics, and electronics are all shot," Dale Grant, vice president of administration and finance, said Monday during Student Senate's meeting.

Grant discussed the condition of Armstrong and the plans and suggestions of how to renovate it.

One of the major suggestions is moving the

pool out of Armstrong to the NPAC in order to utilize the floor space of the pool area for locker rooms and offices.

Grant laid out a three-pronged process for the building a new pool.

First, an architect would have to be selected, and program statements would have to be created. Grant said such statements would cost around $20,000-$25,000. Student Senate allocated $20,000 for the program statement, and Grant said he would fund the difference.

The project would need to first be approved

by the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees, followed by Nebraska's Coordinating Commission for Post-secondary Education.

If approved, the project, which is estimated to cost $2.5 million, will be funded from a bonding account, which is basically a loan from a bank, Grant said.

"Pools are very expensive operations to maintain, to keep the water clean," Grant said. Receiving the loan would mean that the bond would last from 20-25 years and cost about $200,000 a year to pay back.

its streak this weekend when they travel back to the foot of the Rockies to face off with Metro State College, Denver Friday and Regis University, Denver, Saturday.

Metro State will be a challenging opponent for Chadron. Last time the two met, the Roadrunners, then ranked first in the nation, squeaked by with just a four-point victory.

Since then, Metro has dropped to 11th in the NABC poll.

Head coach Brent Bargen is optimistic about the upcoming contest with the RMAC heavyweight.

“I think you have to go into every game expecting to win,” he said. “If we play to our capabilities I feel good

about our chances.”

Chadron also has a history with the Regis Rangers, defeating them 72-58 earlier in the season.

If the Eagles play as competitively in these upcoming games as they did in the last two, another pair of victories seems likely. The Chadron squad looked fresh and energetic as they shot an impressive 50.5 percent on the weekend, out scoring Western 83-58 and Mesa 80-67.

Sophomore Tim McDavid of Scottsbluff led the team against Western with 13 points, while senior Kevin McClelland of Long Beach, Calif., took the helm with 18 points against Mesa.

Softball swings into Vegas for preseason tourney Chris Clark Sports Editor Chadron’s softball team is looking to play a little hardball this season.

The players will open their preseason this weekend in Las Vegas, Nev., in the Desert Stinger tournament. They’ll compete with five different teams: University of Minnesota Duluth, Minn.; Minot State University, Minot, N.D.; Montana State University Billings, Mont.; University of Mary, Bismarck, N.D. and St. Cloud State University, Saint Cloud, Minn.

Minnesota-Duluth and Montana-Billings will most likely pose the greatest challenges to Chadron. The Duluth Bulldogs finished last season with an impressive 33-17 record and were projected to finish fourth by the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference preseason poll.

‘An Adult Evening’ keeps audiences on their toes

Black Box productions are notorious for their mature, edgy nature. “An Adult Evening with Shel Silverstein,” a dark comedy, lives up to the Black Box’s established reputation. This is a difficult play to review, since each of its skits stands alone like a separate play. Many of the skits are clever and thought-provoking. A few of them seem ribald merely for shock value and cheap laughs.

With 13 skits in this play, audience members will probably find something they’ll enjoy.

“An Adult Evening with Shel Silverstein” comprises 13 skits that revel in dark humor; some of them surprise the audience with a philosophical smack upside the head in the midst of the humor. In “Going Once,” an auctioneer, played by Willis Miller, tries to sell a woman, played by Erin Daniel, to the audience by showing off her body and telling potential buyers she’ll do anything they want. When the skit becomes incredibly offensive, the auctioneer asks a simple ques-

tion that changes the entire direction of the skit. Miller perfected the “used car salesman” persona.

In “The Lifeboat is Sinking,” Jen, played

by Erin Neal, tests her husband, played by Derek Phelps, with a game of “lifeboat,” asking whom he would toss overboard first.

What starts as a game morphs into something serious, where reality and nightmare are intertwined. Neal and Phelps maintain a high level of tension and energy throughout the skit.

In “Smile,” the fool, played by Johnathon Prante, who is responsible for inventing clichés like “far out” and “have a nice day” is punished for the horror he has wreaked on humanity. The man is at his wit’s end to explain his blunders as he tries to escape by the seat of his pants from his captors, who have an ax to grind.

Most of the actors establish their characters’ distinct personalities within the duration of the short skits, which is impressive.

Evan Torkelsen has “creepy” down; you would not want to meet any of his characters

in an alley. Becci French is convincing as a dramatic, 13 year-old girl in “The Best Daddy.” Lindsey Ferguson transitions smoothly from an intimidated woman to a vixen with a vendetta in “Bus Stop.” In “Blind Willie and the Talking Dog,” Sara Labor explores the hopes and dreams of a talking dog in a way that seems plausible.

A few of the skits fell flat, such as “Wash and Dry.” The plot twist is interesting, but George, played by Laven Adair, is a onedimensional character. George’s lines, which are disturbing and threatening, are incongruous with his lack of a personality.

Although most of the skits use language and ribald humor to an effect, some of the raunchy humor seems gratuitous. Hannah Clark, who plays Lucy, and Willis Miller, who plays Pete, did a fine job in “Thinking up a New Name for the Act.” The way they only use two words, “meat and potatoes,” yet give the words meaning based on context is clever. The groping, grinding, and leering are less clever.

This play contains plenty of wordplay,

from two prostitutes’ rhyming sales pitch in “Buy One, Get One Free” to the verbal sparring in “Bus Stop.” In “Bus Stop,” Irwin, played by Torkelsen, and Celia, played

by Ferguson, hurl synonyms for male and female anatomy at each other. The actors deliver their lines with a prose rhythm and tempo that is amusing. However, the anatomical content is juvenile and seems to aim for cheap laughs. What is the difference between this and the kid who says “penis” and then giggles about it?

Between the mature content, dark humor, and intimate setting, this play may make some audiences uncomfortable even while they are amused. These characteristics seem to be requisites for a Black Box play, so “An Adult Evening with Shel Silverstein” will not disappoint audiences who expect a certain edginess from Black Box productions. This play is raunchy, violent, and in your face.

“An Adult Evening with Shel Silverstein” will keep audience members on their toes, sometimes literally; during the final skit, I had the pleasure of dodging a flying harmonica.

Silverstein’s ‘Adult Evening’ retains charms of childhood Kevin Oleksy Reporter CSC Theatre’s spring production of “An Adult Evening with Shel Silverstein” delivers a typhoon of hilarity carried on the backs of agile performances from the entire cast.

The production’s spartan set puts the acting at the fore and Hannah Norgard’s costume designs have a whimsical-yeteveryday quality.

The show lives up to all the implications of its title.

One immediately conjures up fond childhood memories of Shel Silverstein’s “A Light in the Attic” and “Where the Sidewalk Ends.” But worry not intrepid theatergoers—your idea of Silverstein will stretch comfortably to include “Adult Evening’s” racily funny, offbeat sketches.

“An Adult Evening” reminds me of the titular poem from the posthumous volume of Silverstein’s children’s work: “Every Thing On It.” The poem laments “I asked for a hot dog / With everything on it, / And that was a big mistake.”

Indeed “Evening” does have a bit of everything in it—from the mundane terror of its opening vignette “One Tennis Shoe” to the surreality of the four-part “Thinking Up a New Name for the Act,” in the second half—but unlike the poem, including a bit of everything is no mistake here.

The show is comprised of thirteen vignettes, covering the sort of tropes that underpin some of Silverstein’s works for children. But here they are fully fleshed out by the heavier idiosyncrasies, consequences, and peccadilloes of adulthood.

“An Adult Evening” starts off slow, with Harvey, played by Jonathon Prante, and Sylvia, played by Ashley Rushman arguing about whether Sylvia is becoming a bag lady. At one point Sylvia, still unconvinced, exclaims, “Turning into a bag lady is like turning into a werewolf!”

Rushman artfully treads on the line between being batty and a victim of circumstance. It starts to seem like maybe she isn’t really turning into a bag lady, but then out comes the oatmeal—a whole bowl of it, cooked and ready to eat—from inside of her purse.

The show’s second bit, “Bus Stop” revels in turning a senseless act of chauvinism on its head. Irwin, played by Evan Torkelsen, appears brandishing a slightly

misspelled “Bus Stop” sign. He accosts Celia, played by Lindsey Ferguson, tells her “The bust stops here,” and begins a rapid barrage of euphemisms for how much he likes her breasts.

After more than 50 body-part nicknames fly, Celia turns the tables on him.

Ferguson is brilliant as she returns a voluble volley of derisive penis words— turning Irwin from creep to coward as he slinks from the scene.

In the darkly funny “Going Once,” an Auctioneer, played by Willis Miller, attempts to sell-off Annie, played by Erin Daniel. This bit echoes Silverstein’s “Sister for Sale,” from “Sidewalk,” but with none of the cute plaintive brother.

The auctioneer tells us Annie is being sold off at her own volition, but she’s willing to do anything for her buyer.

Miller played the auctioneer so compellingly, at times it was difficult not to respond to the catcalls he directed at the audience.

A large part of the second half—its meat and potatoes as it were—is consumed by four linked skits. Their title, “Thinking Up a New Name for the Act,” is 400 percent more verbose than the entire four-part sequence.

All the players involved, led briefly by Miller, as Pete, and for the duration by Hannah Clark, as Lucy, speak only two words over and over. The rest is left to the actors’ inflection and body language.

I won’t spoil its awesomeness any more than to say: it is really, really funny.

The entire cast gave a top-notch performance that left me gleefully clutching my sides.

In the first segment of the second half, George, played by Laven Adair, tells Marianne, played by Emily Ripa, “Don’t expect too much of out of life, you’ll be sorely disappointed.”

But CSC theatergoers would do well to expect much from the Theatre Program’s production of “An Adult Evening with Shel Silverstein,” you won’t be disappointed.

“An Adult Evening with Shel Silverstein” opens tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall’s Black Box Theatre (on the second floor).
