CSC students win awards at International Society of Range Management Convention Sarah Townsend Contributor Three Chadron State College students garnered top awards at the Society for Range Management’s (SRM) 71st Annual Meeting and Convention in Sparks, Nevada, at the end of January. The conference spanned a number of days, starting January 28 and ending February 2, and was themed “Empowerment through Applied Science.” The convention saw an attendance of nearly 1,400 people and 400 of those were students. CSC brought 12 students to compete and network with the producers, educators, researchers, range consultants and government employees in attendance.

Will Krause, junior from Canyon Lake, Texas, took home the first place honors in the Excellence in Range Management poster competition, Missy Jech, senior of Rushville, won first in the photo contest and Jessica Hurd, senior of Gordon, placed fifth in the SRM competition of extemporaneous speaking.

The trio was honored to accept the awards and had great experiences at the convention.

“The best take away from the SRM [convention] was the importance of connections, team work and willingness to learn. It was an awesome experience and it was humbling to have done so well,” Jech said. “The trip overall was a learning experience and I truly enjoyed seeing the different landscapes, people, and differences in practices within the range community.”

Jech entered her photo of a yucca plant framed by fire that she took on her family’s ranch near Rushville. She named the photo “Lil Toasty” and it sold during an auction to raise money for the Society of Range Management endowment.

Hurd gave a speech on “Keystone Species” and was only given two hours to prepare and research her five-to-seven minute presentation.

“SRM [convention] this year and in the past has allowed me to see new places, open my mind to new ideas and understand the depth and structure of the field I’m studying. I was happy

with my placement in the speaking contest, although I believe I could have done better if I had incorporated a couple more ideas,” Hurd said.

Krause entered a large poster featuring photos and text about the range management processes used at Terrell Farms south of Hay Springs. Krause had an internship with the farming company during the summer of 2016.

Nine other CSC students competed in the competitions available at the convention in categories ranging from plant identification, various exams with topics in range management and a chapter display competition. They also attended job fairs, career building seminars and networking information sessions.

Anthony Perlinski and Aaron Field, both CSC rangeland management professors, attended the convention as well. Field serves as a member of the Range Science Education Council, and Perlinski recently took over as the chairman on the SRM Advisory Council. He also serves as president of the Nebraska Society of Range Management.

this month’s Free Movie Night are “Peter Rabbit,” “Black Panther” and “50 Shades Freed.” The doors open at 6:45 p.m.

The AFB Workshop will be Feb. 20, at 6 p.m. in the Ballroom. CAB will be going over budget packets and how to correctly fill them out. Any club member is welcome to attend, even though it is strongly recommended that club presidents and executive boards of clubs are present at the workshop.

BRIEFS Frankenstein Symposium The 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s novel “Frankenstein” is on Feb. 26. To celebrate the anniversary, the University of South Dakota is hosting a “Frankenstein 200! Symposium,” to commemorate the novel and its influence on western culture. The symposium will take place on Feb. 26 and 27, and all of the events are free and open to the public.

The symposium features Joel Pace, a professor at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. He is an expert on British literature and transatlantic romanticism. Events include a community art show and a ghost story writing contest. To register for the event go to the University of South Dakota website, click the Frankenstein 200! tab and click register.

CSC CDC selling “Village Pie Maker” pies The CSC Child Development Center has announced that they are selling “Village Pie Maker” pies to fundraise for their Nature Explore Outdoor Learning Environment. The CSC Nature Explore Outdoor Learning Environment is meant to help children reconnect with nature and the natural world. Pies are sold for $15 each and payment can be made with either cash or check.

The available flavors are: apple, berry medley, blackberry, blueberry, cherry, peach, raspberry/peach, rhubarb and strawberry/rhubarb. The frozen pies will be delivered and ready for pickup on Tuesday, Feb. 20, after 3 p.m. in Burkhiser 231.

Early Childhood Conference The 29th annual Excellence in Early Childhood Conference will be held on Friday, Feb. 16, and Saturday, Feb. 17, on the CSC campus.

The theme of the conference will be “United We Stand for Children…Balanced and Barefoot!” Sessions include the Nebraska Early Learning Guidelines for Social Emotion presented by Sarah Ochoa, Nebraska Early Learning Guidelines for Math presented by Pam Uhl, Safe with You Training presented by Jennifer Baumann and Introduction to Family Child Care Environmental Rating Scale (FCCERS) presented by Cindy Jennett.

The conference features nationally renowned presenter Angela Honscom.

Conference participants can receive her book “Balanced and Barefoot: How Unrestricted Outdoor Play Makes for Strong, Confident, and Capable Children,” for a $5 value.

Senate approves budget for Frankenstein Symposium Katelyn Lambert Lifestyles Editor Senate approved a budget of $4,757.94 to be allocated for an interdisciplinary trip to be taken Feb. 26 and 27 to the University of South Dakota.

The trip to USD is for the “Frankenstein 200! Symposium,” a two-day event celebrating the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein.”

After discussion of various budget appraisals provided by Mary Jones and Kimberly Cox, professors at CSC, Senate voted to approve a budget including travel and hotel but excluding meals.

Senate currently has $105,260.69 in unallocated funds and $156,585.32 in unspent funds.

A complaint from an unnamed source was presented to Senate about funds previously allocated for Senate members to receive jackets. The source was concerned with student fees being used for said jackets. In response, Student Senate President Carly Slaght said the funds had already been allocated.

“Did you want one? You could join Senate,” Vice President of Finance Lukas Kleuber said.

Slaght continued the discussion on incentives for Senate members at Monday’s meeting.

The idea of a fee waiver was proposed as a way to encourage students to become involved in Senate.

According to Slaght, students at Wayne State College get scholarships based on their position in Senate, and this money comes from the school’s foundation.

“Instead of having a tuition waiver, because most people get scholarships of some sort that cover tuition, to do it for room and board … we talked about doing, like, maybe a fee waiver, or a waiver to cover other aspects of your cost to come to college,” Slaght said.

The Spring Daze budget of $26,450 was approved Monday.

There will be an AFB meeting next Monday, and Tuesday, Feb. 20, is the AFB workshop with CAB. Marlys Brenning, 21, junior of Culbertson, was unanimously appointed the final Student Justice.

Course evaluations will come out between the 12th and 13th week of this semester.

“Teachers don’t get them until after your grades have been posted, so you don’t need to worry about teachers seeing a bad evaluation or a good evaluation. It won’t affect your grade at all because it won’t be seen until after [the course is over],” Slaght said.

Tonight is the Lip Sync Battle, sponsored

by CAB and The Pit, from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 18, is another Free Movie Night at the Eagle Theatre.

Class registration for this upcoming summer term, Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 is now open for all students, including freshman.

Maricle promotes genetically modified organism education Loren Ritter Sports Editor CSC collegiate Farm Bureau hosted guest speaker, Hilary Maricle, who came to CSC to give a presentation to help others understand Genetically Modified Organisms, otherwise known as GMOs. Maricle is a member of the Nebraska Farm Bureau Promotion & Education Committee and is currently an educator and farmer from Spalding.

A GMO is an organism that is developed using the tools of genetic engineering. GMOs can often sound scary to consumers; however, there are a lot of foods that most people think are GMOs, but are actually just selectively bred.

Selective breeding is when we choose what traits we want the organism to have, and only reproduce organisms that have the specified traits in hopes that future generations will all hold the desired traits.

Tomatoes and bananas are prime examples of food items that many people think are genetically modified, but

are actually just organisms that have been selectively bred throughout the years.

The foods currently approved to be considered GMO products by the USDA are: alfalfa, potatoes, arctic apples, papaya, corn, soybeans, sugar beets, canola, and squash.

According to the USDA, 94 percent of cotton is considered to be genetically modified, proving that not just food items can be considered GMOs. Even most of the insulin used today is considered to be genetically modified.

The four steps to making a plant become considered a candidate for genetically modified engineering are: determining whether or not using genetic engineering is the most effective way to solve the plant’s problem, identifying the desired gene, removing the desired trait from a donor organism, and, finally, planting the new seed to test it.

Although some uninformed consumers worry that GMOs are not safe to eat, Maricle assured the audience that the process GMOs take to be considered safe for the environment is a lengthy process that can take several years to complete.

Maricle said GMOs are safe to eat and grow. She also said that she uses GMOs on her farm and doesn’t recall a time where she hasn’t been using GMO crops.

“Rather than putting on an insecticide that may kill multiple insects, because we know some insects are good, it allows us to target very specifically,” Maricle said.

When stating the benefits of GMOs, Maricle brought up that GMOs can help reduce production time, production cost and food waste levels.

Maricle presented an example of misleading consumer information during her presentation. She showed the audience a Tropicana orange juice she bought from Safeway earlier in the day that had the sticker ‘Non-GMO’ on it.

Although the labels are not misinforming customers, they can be considered misleading due to the fact that currently there are no GMO oranges on the market. Marking one style of jug with ‘Non-GMO’ but not putting any GMO related sticker on other jug styles next to it on shelves can lead consumers to falsely believe that one orange juice jug may actually contain GMOs at first glance.

Speaker visits campus to educate on human rights Kylee Odenbach Reporter About 50 students, faculty and community members attended last Thursday night’s Galaxy Series event in Memorial Hall to listen to guest speaker Sandra Uwiringiyimana talk about human rights and her story of immigration.

Uwiringiyimana, of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is a human rights activist and the co-founder of the Jimbere Fund, a non-profit working to combat poverty in rural communities in Congo.

She told her story of how she survived a massacre, immigrated to America and finally found her voice.

Uwiringiyimana and her family were forced out of their country in 2004, and settled in America in 2007. She encountered many difficulties and challenges after being resettled in the United States.

“My entire family didn’t speak very much English when we first came to the U.S., so it was a very hard challenge at first,” Uwiringiyimana said.

Uwiringiyimana has now become a voice for other refugees in the U.S. “Refugees can overcome many challenges when they come to the U.S. by utilizing community outreach,” Uwiringiyimana said.

Uwiringiyimana wrote a book titled “How Dare the Sun Rise” about the challenges she went through and how she overcame them.

The book tells her story of survival, and how she used art and activism to overcome her trauma.

“I could relate to everything that Sandra talked about,” Jeff Mugongo, 19, sophomore of Denver, said.

Jeff Mugongo, a student at Chadron State College, immigrated from Rwanda to the U.S. in 2010.

“It was extremely hard to adjust to living here at first. I didn’t know how to read, write, or speak the language,” Mugongo said.

Jeff is a social work major, and he said it was a miracle that he ended up at CSC. Uwiringiyimana is currently attending college at Mercy College

“I strongly encourage students to look outside of themselves and to not be individualistic,” Uwiringiyimana said.

Chadron State College’s next Galaxy Series event will be on March 27 at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Hall Auditorium, and will feature a performance by the Cashore Marionettes.

Art exhibit turns disaster into beauty Yen Nguyen Reporter Laura Petrovich welcomed guests to the “Stitched in Wood” exhibition during the Galaxy Series reception Monday in Memorial Hall.

At the reception, Petrovich shared much about the inspiration for her works.

“I was always inspired by quilters. I learned about quilting from watching ‘Little House on the Prairie,’” Petrovich said. “They traveled through this area, Nebraska and the whole Midwest, and when I was little, it was a huge influence.”

The largest artwork in the exhibition, “Crazy Quilt,” was put together with 80 pieces. Petrovich said she

got the idea from her hometown, Philadelphia, and brought it to where she’d always wanted to travel, Nebraska. Chadron State students helped hang the pieces in the exhibit.

“It’s the community help. I wanted it to be an art of community. I wanted them to have a part of it,” Petrovich said.

According to the artist, they hung the 80-piece artwork sporadically, but it still has a consistency that holds things together.

“Each one of the 80 pieces has the color of dark green wood so it holds together,” she said.

The exhibition presents a sense of order with squares but still shows some inconsistency with rectangular pieces.

“I like order and symmetry. Most of the wood is from

the disaster of [a] hurricane. Within that chaos, I want to bring back order,” Petrovich said. “And the most perfect shape is the square and that’s why I chose square, but I’m not always consistent in that choice.”

Petrovich also keeps the original color of the woods and only arranges them in the order she wants.

“Whatever the color is, it stays,” Petrovich said.

The artist from Philadelphia also expressed her feeling about the cold weather in Chadron.

“It’s the coldest place I’ve ever been. I’ve been to the Arctic and it wasn’t as cold as it is here. But it’s really beautiful,” Petrovich said. “I love seeing the white hills with snow and the very fuzzy black houses just dots in the landscape and the gorgeous blue sky.”

The “Stitched in Wood” exhibition is open until Friday in the Memorial Hall Main Gallery.

“The Greatest Showman” rekindles circus magic Torri Brumbaugh Managing Editor

When I was younger, going to the circus was a magical experience for me. My family would load up the car and head to Rapid City, South Dakota to view amazing human feats.

I would patiently wait for the time of year when the circus would come to town.

The magic of the circus has worn off now that I’m 20, but thankfully, director Michael Gracey was able to recreate that giddy feeling I had as a kid in his film “The Greatest Showman.”

“The Greatest Showman” tells the story of P. T. Barnum, played by Hugh Jackman, and how he developed the first circus.

The film begins with Barnum as a poor child, who is constantly dreaming of a better world.

After starting a family with his childhood love, Barnum realizes that he didn’t live up to his dreams and ambitions.

In hopes of fulfilling his promises to himself and his wife,

Barnum begins a museum of curiosities. Tickets don’t sell to Barnum’s museum, until his daughter points out the one flaw: they need something live.

While wandering around New York City, Barnum begins to find unique people to add to his show, including a bearded lady, a man covered in tattoos and a “giant.” He gathers these people and develops the world’s first circus.

As the story continues, the audience sees Barnum try to balance his friendships and family with his ambition and search for fame.

The audience also watches as the circus “freaks” find their voices and accept who they are. The storyline is inspiring and reinforces the idea that your limits are only the ones you create.

The story is beautiful and creates a land of magic, but “The Greatest Showman” is also a musical. I could listen to the music from “The Greatest Showman” every day.

For those who are weary about musicals, know that the music from this film is very contemporary and not your traditional Broadway music.

Without the music in this film, I feel like you would lose

a lot of the captivating magic and would lose part of the true message.

While the plot and the music in “The Greatest Showman” are wonderful, the actors are what bring the film to life. The movie includes many well-known actors, like Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Zendaya and Michelle Williams. I love each of these actors, so to see them on the screen together in such an amazing film is fantastic.

The A-list actors are amazing, but one actor steals the show. Keala Settle, who plays the bearded lady, is seen as a leader to the circus people. Settle’s character helps empower the other characters and encourages them to embrace their differences.

The song “This is Me,” Settle’s major solo, is one of my favorite songs in the movie. Settle speaks about being discriminated against as an actress for her size and weight, and you can tell that she uses that experience in her song and in the rest of the film as a whole.

For those who love musicals and have a soft spot for Zac Efron, I highly recommend seeing “The Greatest Showman.”

You will leave the movie feeling like anything is possible and ready to belt your heart out.

Today, Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate romance and love and kissy-face fealty. However, the origins of this festival of candy and everything pink and red is actually very dark and bloody. According to NPR, ancient Romans would celebrate the feast of Lupercalia from February 13 to 15. For these days, the men sacrificed a goat and a dog, then whipped women, who were auctioned off in a lottery, with the hides of animals they had just slain, in belief that it would make the women fertile.

Bringing it back to modern-day, I still don’t believe it’s any more to celebrate now than it was back then. This “day of love” that we celebrate seeks only to leech money from its love-struck victims. Somehow, when February 14 rolls around on the calendar, everyone becomes more passionate and more in love as if the calendar reading “February 14” actually alters the feelings of anyone. There are 364 other days during the year to celebrate these sentiments that society pressures to be celebrated on this day specifically. Sometimes, all the pressure put on the holiday can make the gestures feel insincere and forced.

It’s the unexpected little surprise gifts that feel the most sincere.

Why save all of these sappy acts of love for this specific day? Random little gifts or acts can mean more on any random day rather than saving it for this socially constructed ideology.

Why can’t we do things like this every day?

Why do we need a day to focus on those we love?

Valentine’s Day is a great thing, don’t get me wrong. But why should it be confined to one day? We should be doing little things every day that show someone we love them.

So, instead of saving up your money for a dozen of those expensive roses or a night out at an expensive restaurant, make dinner

once a week with your significant other or tag-team chores instead of waiting on the other to do them. These are some everyday things that can be done to show someone you love them.

A ridiculous amount of pressure is also put on the gifts. As if birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas wasn’t enough, Valentine’s Day has proclaimed that all people must purchase yet another present for their loved ones.

Not to mention that it’d better be good enough for an Instagram or Snapchat post, because your entire relationship (for some reason) rides on your capability and creativity to get a romantic trinket or pretty flowers simply because the calendar tells you to.

Elementary students have it right. Everyone has fun decorating their own little shoe box and everyone contributes a pile of candy to them. Most importantly, everyone actually gets something. It’s just another Halloween (except pink). For them, it’s a day of celebrating friendship, candy, and sharing, and that is something worthy of celebration.

So unless we can wise up and be second graders on Valentine’s Day again, it will continue to be a day on the calendar ordering us to fork too much money on a dozen roses and professing our love to someone, and rather than out of our hearts, it can feel out of obligation.

But hey, “February 14” on the calendar has a big heart around it, so that makes it totally alright, doesn’t it?

Candy is on sale, there are rem polish on my nails and single peop ter than usual. All signs point to the tine’s Day has just passed.

Honestly, I can see why Valen leaves a bitter taste in people’s m often revolves around couple’s fla lationships and companies shovin love down our throats. Valentine’s oped a negative connotation, but look, Valentine’s Day should be and ed by everyone.

tic. Sometimes I forget to wash my hair, let alone tell everyone important in my life how much I love them. Is it that bad to have a day dedicated to letting those around you know how you feel?

For those skeptical about Valentine’s Day, let’s look at another holiday: Mother’s Day. You should appreciate your mother everyday, but yet we still celebrate Mother’s Day. I’m sure your mother has never rejected a day devoted to you showering her with love and presents. And while everyone may not have a significant other on Valentine’s Day, not everyone has a mother or a healthy relationship with their mother.

Now for my single ladies (and men) out there, you do have to remember that it is OK to be single.

No one is pressuring you to be in a relationship or pressuring you to find love. Valentine’s Day is not dedicated to shaming single people, it is meant to celebrate love. You may see Valentine’s Day ads everywhere and aisles full of Valentine’s products, and yes, that may make you feel left out. But just stop and think of how it feels to be a part of literally any other religion during Christmastime.

Society as a whole needs to stop looking at Valentine’s Day as an obligation that shames those not in a relationship, but as a day to celebrate those around you and those who bring love and happiness into your life. Love is something to be celebrate.

It is still February and there is still the cold fluffy stuff falling from the sky. I don’t know about you, but I’m getting tired of the cold days and am looking forward to warm, sunny spring days. I’m a huge fan of non-jacket weather.

One of my favorite things to do in anticipation of spring is prespring cleaning. That may sound silly, but there is nothing better to do on a gloomy winter day than to go through the clutter in your life.

The way I think about the clutter in my life is on two different levels. There’s a physical/material level and a mental level.

Physical and material are the things that lurk in the corner of your closet or in a box in the hall closet. It can also be clothes you don’t wear anymore. Really just anything that is no longer used or needed.

Getting rid of all the clutter is a relief. But there is more clutter in

life than the objects in your home.

I am a firm believer in there being “mental clutter.” Those are the things that linger in your mind or become unnecessary speed bumps in life.

I like to start by going onto social media and unfriending/unfollowing the pages and people who constantly post negative things.

I don’t know about you but there always seems to be two or three people in my friends list that really have nothing nice to say. Sometimes seeing this negativity brings my mood down and I’m not a fan of that.

For example, maybe you have a friend that somehow always has drama and asks for you advice but never follows it.

There isn’t a need to stress about something out of your control that doesn’t pertain to you.

I’m guilty of doing this numerous times. There’s always those little things that don’t really involve you but somehow causes you stress.

Get a jump on spring cleaning and take some time to declutter both your environment and your mind. There are benefits even if you just do one or the other. The good thing is this can be done at any time.

You don’t have to wait for spring to declutter your life. I encourage you to take a step back and look at the things in your environment and mind that may be cluttering your way to a better lifestyle.

Eagles lose momentum at home Devin Fulton Reporter On Friday evening in the Chicoine Center, the men’s basketball team fell to the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners. The Eagles got off to a rough start as the Roadrunners were up 18-2 after six minutes of play. Eventually, the Eagles would hit their stride in the second half.

Jaisean Jackson, junior of Denver Colorado, found his groove as he put up 23 points. Despite a second half surge by the Eagles, turnovers proved to be too costly and the Roadrunners defeated the Eagles 6247. The Eagles turned the ball over 19 times while the Roadrunners turned it over 15 times.

On Saturday evening, the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions came to town after losing to Regis University, 93-88. The Eagles got off to a fast start, leading for a majority of the game. Jackson had himself another incredible afternoon as the junior from Denver, Colorado, put up 23 points against the Mountain Lions.

The Eagles shot 56 percent from the field and had a lot of success on offense, but it came down to turnovers as the Mountain Lions escaped the Chicoine Center, defeating the Eagles 74-70. Unfortunately, the Eagles offense stalled at the worst possible time as the Mountain Lions climbed back from a 13-point half-time deficit.

Following the doubleheader weekend, the men’s basketball team faced off against the Regis Rangers in what would be an extremely intense matchup. Everything was going right for the Eagles in the first half as it seemed like they could not miss from the three-point line.

Heading into halftime, the Eagles led the Rangers 34-20. At one point in the second half, the Eagles led 40-20, but unfortunately their offense lost momentum. In the meantime, Regis hit their stride with perfect timing as the Rangers put up 53 points in the second half alone. The Rangers defeated the Eagles 73-67 in heartbreaking fashion.

The Eagles currently sit with a 1-19 record in conference play (3-23 overall). The men’s basketball team will host Black Hills State University and South Dakota School of Mines on February 23 and 24 to conclude their season.

Eagles face difficult competition at Dixie State Aaron Duin Reporter After several close games at the Dixie State Easton Classic, in Utah. The Chadron State Softball team lost all five of the games they played this past week. Despite strong pitching, defensive errors and limited offensive production, the Eagles were kept out of the win column. The Easton Classic provided the Eagles with difficult competition including the No. 9 Dixie State Trailblazers.

The Eagles began the tournament Thursday, Feb. 8 in St. George, Utah by facing Montana State University Billings. The game featured superb pitching from both teams. Jessica Jarecki, sophomore of Littleton, Colorado, threw 10 strikeouts but was unable to get the win. The Eagles fell 1-0 in a defensive battle.

In their second game on Thursday, the Chadron State Eagles fell 7-3 to Northwest Nazarene University. The Eagles were unable to overcome a fast start from the Northwest Nazarene. The Nighthawks scored six of their seven total runs in the first two innings. After a pitching change, the Eagles settled down. Ellie Owens, sophomore of Longmont, Colorado hit a home run to start the seventh inning, giving the Eagles a spark. However, Chadron fell short and accumulated their fifth non-conference loss.

The theme of close losses continued Friday. The Eagles lost 8-6 to Dominican University of California. Chadron State gave up seven runs in the third inning. Once again, a strong seventh inning with three runs was not enough to produce an Eagle win. The losses to Northwest Nazarene University and Dominican University of California both fell on the resume of pitcher Megan Horn, sophomore of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

In their afternoon game against California Baptist, the Chadron State offense was stifled. Despite a solid defensive performance, the Eagles fell 3-0. With Jarecki back on the mound for Chadron State, the Eagles only allowed four hits.

Offensively the Eagles were held to a mere two hits and were unable to produce any runs.

The Eagles ended the weekend with a tough matchup against the No. 9 Dixie State Trailblazers. Jarecki pitched a complete game and once again, only allowed four hits. However, the Trailblazers capitalized on key errors committed by the Eagles and were able to score three unearned runs. Ultimately the Eagles fell 5-3 to end the tournament.

The Eagles hope to end their five-game losing streak Saturday, Feb. 24 as they begin RMAC play. Colorado Mesa will host a doubleheader. The Eagles will use the week off to prepare for the transition into conference play.

Eagles compete at 2018 SDSU Indoor Classic Aaron Duin Reporter The CSC track and field teams participated in the highly competitive SDSU Indoor Classic this past weekend. The meet was highly competitive including multiple NCAA Division I teams and over 1,400 athletes. The Eagles performed well despite the difficult competition. The men’s and women’s teams combined for eight individual top 10 performances.

The weight throw was a strong point, as usual, for the Eagles. Ashlyn Hanson, senior of Seward placed fourth in the event with a throw of 59 feet, 11 inches. In fifth place was Ashton Hallsted, sophomore of Casper, Wyoming, 9 ½ inches behind her teammate. On the

men’s side Cory Martens, junior of Newton, Kansas finished fourth with a toss of 61 feet, 2 ¾ inches. The Eagles hope to continue their success in the weight throw into the RMAC Championships.

The long jump and triple jump were also strong events for the Eagles. Isaac Grimes, freshman of Rancho Verde, California, continued his remarkable debut season. Grimes placed third in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump. Maddie Brashears, junior of Fort Morgan, Colorado, finished sixth in women’s long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 7 inches.

The 4x400-meter relay provided points for both the men’s and women’s teams. The men’s team placed eighth with a time of 3:18.92. The women’s team also finished eighth with a time of 3:56.24.

In the distance events Riley Howard, sophomore of Anchorage, Alaska paced the Eagles. Howard ran a personal record time of 15:16.40 and placed 12th. The women’s distance runners were led by Alyse Henry, junior of Rock Springs, Wyoming. Henry placed 14th and 15th in the 3000-meter run and mile run respectively.

CSC’s team is looking to finish the season on a positive note. A portion of the team will travel to Spearfish, South Dakota this weekend to compete in the Stinger Open. The following weekend the Eagles will be in Golden, Colorado to compete in the RMAC Championship meet.

Eight CSC wrestlers compete in the RMAC Open McKenna Jones Reporter The CSC Eagle wrestlers traveled to Golden, Colorado, Sunday to wrestle at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Open. Eight wrestlers participated in the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open, with two wrestlers placing for the team, and five scoring points for a team score of 28.5. The open was won by the Air Force Academy, who scored 99.5 points.

Chase Clasen, 149-pound redshirt junior of Moses Lake, Washington, finished second in the 149-pound open, and scored a total of 12 points. Clasen defeated Colorado State University–Fort Collins wrestler Santana Salas, 149-pound freshman of Commerce City, Colorado, by decision, 4-3. In the quarterfinal, Clasen won by fall, 3:47, over Air Force Academy’s Joshua Giorgio, 141-pound junior of Leesport, Pennsylvania. In the semifinal round, Clasen won by sudden victory of Air Force Prep School’s Brandon Konecny, 149-pound freshman. Clasen lost by injury default, to finish second.

CSC’s Joshua Miller, 141-pound redshirt junior of Bennett, Colorado, finished third, scoring 9.5 points for the Eagles. Miller won the first-round match by fall, 2:23, against Louis Romero, 141-pound freshman of Westminster, Colorado. Miller lost in the quarterfinal match by fall, 5:37, by Western State Colorado’s Jacob Baird, 141-pound freshman of Mesquite, Nevada. Miller received a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket and won the third round against Tim Edmonson of Western Colorado State, a 141-pound redshirt freshman of San Antonio. Miller defeated Lukas Erickson 141-pound junior of Holladay, Utah, from Colorado School of Mines in the consolation semifinals. In his final match competing for third place in the open 141-pound bracket, Miller defeated Armando Santillan, 141-pound freshman of Aurora, Colorado.

Other team scorers for the Eagles include 165-pound redshirt junior of Bellevue, Jonny Porter who scored two points. Jacob Otuafi, 157-pound redshirt sophomore of Sparks, Nevada, scored two points for the Eagles, too. 133-pounder Brandon Kile, junior of Hastings scored three points for the Eagles.

The next event for the Eagles is the NCAA Regionals, Feb. 23 and 24, in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

Eagles lose three-in-a-row at home against Colorado Devin Fulton Reporter

On Friday evening, the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners came to the Chicoine Center to take on the women’s basketball team. In what was a rather gritty performance by the Eagles, the Roadrunners walked out of the Chicoine Center with the victory as the Eagles were defeated by a score of 91-78.

The women’s basketball team got off to a slow start in the first quarter of action but found their stride in the second quarter. Taryn Foxen, freshmen of Aurora, Colorado, began her scoring streak as she ended the night with 20 points in 39 minutes of play. The Eagles entered halftime trailing 35-39, but it was the Roadrunners that came out firing in the second half.

In the third quarter, MSU put up 33 points. The offensive onslaught allowed the Roadrunners to prevail against an Eagle team that was starting to gain momentum.

On Saturday evening, the women’s basketball team faced off against another RMAC opponent from Colorado as the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Mountain Lions came to the Chicoine Center. In a very similar matchup, the Eagles got off to a slow start on offense but hit their stride late in the second quarter. Entering the second half trailing by a score of 27-32, the Eagles offense lost momentum as they were only able to put up 26 points in the second half.

Despite the lack of offense, Foxen had herself another excellent evening, putting up 21 points in 36 minutes of action.

Following the weekend action, the Eagles hosted Regis, who is currently third in the RMAC with a record of 13-6 in conference play.

The game started exactly how the Eagles would have hoped. Shooting 41 percent from the field, the Eagles hopped on top early and went into the second half with the lead 34-30.

However, the Rangers quickly turned things around and scored 26 points in the third quarter. With just 6:24 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Eagles trailed 55-66, but Kalli Feddersen, senior of Rawlins Wyoming and her 25-point evening helped the Eagles tie the game with a last second free-throw.

Heading into overtime with a score of 73-73, the Rangers hit their stride and defeated the Eagles 85-76. The Eagles now possess a 3-17 conference record (5-21 overall).

The Eagles will conclude their season at home against Black Hills State University and South Dakota School of Mines on Feb. 23 and 24.
