The Student Senate currently holds $83,240 in unallocated funds among its four accounts, Treasurer Ashley Swanson said Monday.

SEMESTER PLANS Lane Swedberg, vice president, said that currently CAB is focusing on upcoming events such as spring days, taking place April 21-26, Release, which will be March 16, and Scholastic day.

The new year started off with Student Senate approving a new club.

Christian Challenge was approved as an on campus club by a majority of senators. Reba Jackson, corresponding secretary, asked what set Christian Challenge apart from the other Christian Clubs on campus. Justin Brown, a sponsor of Christian Challenge said that Christian Challenge is more of a mission outreach group rather than a bible study group. Brown also said that they were interested in having a presence on campus because he wanted to see more students involved. “This is where the leaders are going to come from,” Brown said.

In other business, T.J. Thomson, vice president, said that each organization of student government has it’s own constitution. Thomson said that to try to get more unity and avoid points of conflict, he would like to merge all student government constitutions into one constitution. This would include Student Senate, CAB, and Student Senate Finance Committee. A committee including Jacob Rissler, Senator of Andrews Hall; Heather Wing, Chief Justice; one member of CAB and one member of SFC was put together to consolidate the different constitutions.

On Tuesday, contention rose in CAB’s regular meeting. Dani Buckley, president, reminded CAB members to follow protocol and stand when making a motion. “Can we wear big boy wigs too?” Evan Baker, sophomore of Ord asked. Buckley replied by saying he could do whatever he wanted as long as he was following protocol.

In official business, Campus Activities Board allocated $1,800 to free bowling night and $1,800 to free movie night. Free bowling night will be Jan. 19, and free movie night will be Jan. 20.

Shellie Johns, CAB adviser reminded CAB members to let conferencing know about any activities to be put on February’s calendar by Jan. 20.

Kellie Aye, treasurer, said that this year budget packets will be emailed to clubs, and are required by Feb. 21.

Clubs asking for less than $1000 will have their hearing on March 14 or 15, while clubs asking for more than $1000 are required to attend a 20 minute hearing on March 20 or 21.

Legislature to vote on 2-year tuition freeze for college, university systems T.J. Thomson Executive Editor Gov. Dave Heineman will propose, for the first time in Nebraska history, a joint two-year tuition freeze, totaling $68.3 million, when he submits his budget to the Nebraska Unicameral Tuesday.

If approved, Heineman’s plan would lock tuition rates at current levels for academic years 2013-14 and 2014-15 for the university and state college systems.

Heineman said in a phone interview Wednesday that the $4.1 million for the state colleges, Chadron, Peru, and Wayne, would be part of the state’s standard budget and that the state has the money to cover the costs.

“We clearly have the money to fund this proposal,” he said.

Heineman said it would likely be the middle of May before the state’s budget is finalized.

Heineman said, to his knowledge, this is the first time in Nebraska’s history that a tuition freeze like this has been proposed.

“I don’t think there has ever been a time when we’ve had a two-year tuition freeze,” Heineman said.

“There hasn’t been a proclamation like this that anyone [at our office] can remember,” said Jason Kreese, public information and special project coordinator for the Nebraska Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education. The University System has frozen tuition three times in the past in 1978, 1987, and 1990, but the University System and NSCS jointly freezing tuition for a two-year period is new.

“This is pretty unique for the state colleges, the uni-

versity system, and the governor to join in a compact like this,” Melissa Lee, communications manager for the University of Nebraska, said in a telephone interview Wednesday.

Heineman noted that the plan would affect tuition rates only. Student fees and other expenses would still be up to the individual colleges and universities, he said.

Chadron State’s Interim President Randy Rhine said Wednesday that if the legislature approved the proposal, it would only apply to CSC’s in-state rate, not the out-of-state or online rates. Rhine said that it’s still too early to predict whether the Nebraska State College System will raise fees, but that the board of trustees would decide at its upcoming March meeting.

Korinne Tande, vice chancellor for student affairs, marketing, enrollment & public information, said Wednesday she hadn’t been on any discussions regarding the tuition freeze, but that she said the System Office would carefully evaluate whether to raise student fees.

“At all times, the discussion [to raise fees] is always a considered decision,” Tande said. “The hope was to keep the costs the same for students.”

Although he said he hadn’t spoken with Appropriations Committee Chair, Heath Mello, District 5 of Omaha, about his view on the tuition freeze, Heineman said that Mello has been “a very strong supporter of education in the past.”

“Education is the great equalizer,” Heineman said. “I think it’s [the tuition freeze] a great priority and will be working with the legislature closely to ensure its passage.”

W

ith the rising costs of higher education, we look at our thinning wallets and start to question: is college really about opportunity?

While Gov. Heineman is entertaining the idea of a tuition rate freeze, there is a cost that won’t be eased for Jill Freshman and Joe Sophomore: textbooks.

The blame does not rest entirely on the bookstore; they’re contractually bound and subject to the whims of corporate ownership. It might seem like a racket that you spend $70 dollars on a used textbook, but at the end of the semester you receive barely enough back to buy lunch. But business is business; they’re still the only retailer for the blue exam book.

With hectic semester transitions, some faculty members will forget to submit their book lists to the campus bookstore, and students are relieved to seek online outlets.

For other professors, a delicate balance hinges on the pocket books of their students.

How do you choose between using the cheaper and plentiful previous editions and enhancing our A woman manipulates education with the more a digital textbook on a costly, newest version? portable tablet screen.

Some might write off the textbook question as a way to test students’ commitment and how much they are willing to put toward learning and their future.

The symptom this creates is that students will wait a few weeks to see if the course inclusion and assigned reading warrants purchasing the “required” text, or if they can squeeze by on the information in the lecture alone. It’s a gamble, but what other alternatives do we really have?

Chadron State College, along with eight other colleges nationally, has taken the lead with the Kaleidoscope Project, an institution that uses Open Education Resources (OER). While the OER platform shines as a beacon of cost-effective hope, the digital divide, as well as outages that plague campus infrastructure from WiFi-connections to learning management systems to email service providers, quickly dampen the allure of open-source learning.

For books that are not only essential to your major, but also your future career, nothing compares to having the physical copy for your library.

As long as there’s that sentiment amongst scholars and professors, books will be printed and the students will pay.

There are so many things wrong with this situation that I have a hard time figuring out where to start, so I’ll try with the beginning.

It’s likely that “Cut for Bieber” was started as a prank against the “Belieber” phenomenon, but the problem is that cutting and self-harm is in no way a joking matter. And rather than harming the popstar, this prank is hitting young, gullible girls.

Charity shouldn’t be a holiday affair

Franklin Annis Columnist Approximately 50 percent of all charity donations occur during the six-weeks before Christmas. While one reason for this might be due to our tax codes, the holiday season is a period of charity and giving. During this time, we enjoy the wonderful rewards of giving by sharing presents with our loved ones and giving to the less fortunate. While the culture of giving during the holiday season can bolster non-profit organizations and those in need during the holiday season, the need for charity doesn’t end on Dec. 26.

In a world that seems to be driven by

the goal of generating maximum profit, philanthropy can provide our culture an ethical balance between the haves and have nots. To raise the lowest of our society and make them more productive is the goal of charity, and it’s more than simple material donations. Charity, when used effectively, can greatly impact the lives of the recipients and raise them to a social status where they no longer need aid. I would hope that any educated American would demonstrate charity and mercy within their community.

While we often think of charity in terms of financial donations, true charity demands a broader approach. Many social conditions cannot simply be fixed with money, but require the actions and dedication of passionate volunteers.

Being a charitable individual doesn’t require financial gifts, and there are many charities that would appreciate the gift of time or labor just as much as financial donations. On a college student’s budget, you can still fit charity into your daily life.

What charity should you get involved with? This all depends on who you want

to help. The beautiful thing about charity is that you can pick causes and organizations that you are passionate about.

If there is not a charity that addresses the needs you see in your community, consider starting one.

Consider your talents and how they might be best used to support your charitable goals. Are you a really friendly person? Consider spending time interacting with seniors in a retirement home. Are you a really good party planner? Consider helping a local charity organize a charitable event. Are you a handy with tools? Consider donating some of your labor to a charity building houses. These are all examples of how you can increase your charity activity without requiring a single penny.

I would hope that every individual would seek to build a stronger community. Be known as a charity member in your community and you will be held in high-regard and enjoy the internal rewards of helping others. Make charity a part of your year-round activities because the need for charity in our community far exceeds the short holiday season.

Feb. 6, 2012–Queen Elizabeth II marks the 60th Anniversary of her rule with a Diamond Jubilee celebration. According to the celebration’s official website, more than 35,000 children submitted entries in a contest to design an emblem for the event. “The competition, open to children aged between 6 and 14, was won by 10-year-old Katherine Dewar, from Chester,” the site states. Eagles end break with double loss Molly Wedan Sports Editor Chadron State’s men’s basketball team saw double action last weekend on Friday and Saturday when they faced Fort Lewis and Adams State. The outcomes weren’t what the Eagles were hoping as they lost to Fort Lewis 85-61, and came up short to Adams State 86-65.

Fort Lewis, now 9-1, scored the first points of the game off a jumper by Alex Herrera, and kept the lead for the rest of the game. Herrera was one of four players who made double-digit points in Friday’s game. Fort Lewis had a 55.4 shooting percentage, while Chadron only shot 36.5 percent from field goal range.

Leading for CSC was Zac Bargen, junior forward of Chadron, with 23 points. He also had 10 rebounds, most being in the first half. The second half started out slow for the Eagles, after multiple missed shots and three minutes had gone by, and the first points were put up by junior guard of Scottsbluff, David Downey’s free throw.

Looking to redeem themselves against Adams State, the Eagles came out hungry for a win. They played neck-and-neck with the Grizzlies until a three pointer by Shaheed Young gave Adams State a 12 point lead before halftime.

Chadron did improve their free throw shooting percentage from the night before with an average of 82.9 percent, giving them an edge. However, Adams State’s 44.4 three point shooting percentage helped them capture the win. Grant Stone, junior of Canton, Mich., led the Eagles with 18 points. Three other CSC athletes scored in double digits as well. Adams State is now 9-1 overall.

Chadron hosts Black Hills State on Saturday.

Black Hills is currently 3-12 for the season. The game is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. in Armstrong.

While many of us enjoyed our Christmas breaks at home, the Chadron State wrestlers continued practice and traveled to Phoenix, Arizona for the annual Grand Canyon University duals.

Ten teams participated in the event, including No. 6 Grand Canyon University and No. 3 St. Cloud State University.

Chadron State lost their very first dual to the sixthranked Grand Canyon University 26-15, but went on to win three straight to finish the meet with a 3-1 record.

CSC won their final three bouts by an average of 18 points.

Junior Jordan Debus of Mitchell, and seniors Chris Leak of Omaha, and Perry McAfee of Casper, Wyo. all went undefeated during the tournament. Leak, who is now 12-7 on the season recorded two pins during his four matches and earned CSC Athlete of the Week honors.

The Eagles are set to compete again on Thursday, Jan. 10th against the Colorado State-Pueblo Thunder Wolves in the Nelson Physical Activity Center.

Art Exhibit leaves viewers guessing Hannah Clark Reporter Twelve baffling pieces hang on the feltcovered walls. There are mermaids and overcoats, demons and dresses, fires and feather caps. This week, Alejandro Mazon, a Cuban-born artist based out of N.Y., brings his unique blend of Spanish and Cuban influence to the upstairs gallery of Memorial Hall, showing until Feb. 1st.

Although a compelling craftsman, Mazon leaves his audience wondering. Off of one piece, “The Butterfly Dress”, hangs ten metal symbols, tied to fraying fabric, which spill out of the picture frame.

These symbols are, from right to left: S R 9 C 5 E 0 8 I and the silhouette of a boot. Some gallery patrons may be bemused, others confused, by Mazon’s esoteric choices.

One piece, “Bird House”, features a hanging box lined with illustrated dictionary pages and sided with painted, contemplative men. Inside, Mazon suspended a gold-leafed acrylic painting of a bird. Behind the bird hangs another box with an explosion scene, complete with a bazooka-wielding toy soldier. A strange pairing indeed.

These and other pieces are a result of Mazon favoring, in his words, “vintage” materials, like wallpapers, boxes, prints, and fabrics, which combine like a Hispanic hope chest with his paints. Bits of culture and experience are covered with intriguing Cuban faces, and this approach ties together each of Mazon’s works.

The show’s only negative aspect was a disappointing gallery arrangement, with three pieces lacking tags.

For style, Mazon blends traditional Hispanic portraits with strange compositions and antiquated scraps. In “The Butterfly Dress”, a woman in traditional finery smiles with her hazel-haired lapdog.

This looks normal, except for the woman’s portrait partner, a man with a crocodile head. This juxtaposition of traditionallooking Latino portraits and barbarism highlights Mazon’s unique outlook and diverse background. elOne of the unlabeled pieces has two el liptical canvases, the first showing an erupting volcano, and second shows a demure wearVictorian woman, wear feathing an enormous feath ery hat, posing for a portrait. The volcano from the first panel smokes menacingly in makthe background, mak ing the woman appear cominappropriately com natuposed in the face of natu ral disaster. This sort of pairing, sense and tradition versus serialism and nature, flows throughout Mazon’s work.

In this new upstairs gallery show, nature – brutish and short, messy and unbridled – presides alongside quaint, organized portraits. The paintings’ subjects smile knowingly, as though they, inside the art, understand Mazon’s fascinating dichotomy of tradition and madness, while the viewer is just left guessing.

Mazon’s exhibit wil be located in the upstairs gallery of Memorial Hall until February 1.

The ultimate time waster, Facebook, is a perfect place for procrastinators

Reap the fruits of procrastination ... tomorrow Sara Labor Lifestyles Editor With a few pounds put on because of Christmas cookies, and absolutely no work done, I am now returning to the life I belong to. Some of you may think that the life I’m talking about is the life of a college student. You would be wrong. No, I am talking about the life of a procrastinator.

I’m here to teach you, my fellow students, how to be a professional procrastinator. If you actually want to be productive, you should definitely not follow any of these tips.

1. The Internet is your best friend: I recently was told by a friend that Pinterest is a conspiracy propagated by the patriarchs in our society to show women how to do things that they will never actually accomplish because they’re too busy spending all their time on Pinterest. Pinterest, according to my friend, is holding women back from their dreams because they’re devoting all their time to a website.

So maybe this conspiracy theory is a little over the top. However, if I’m in almost any class where a laptop is open, there is at least one person on Facebook.

In fact, as I write this, I am jumping back and forth from Word Processor to Tumblr. It’s inevitable, once you get on the internet, odds are you’re going to surf.

If you want to be a professional procrastinator, go online, open seven tabs, and bounce between Tumblr, Facebook, and Youtube. It’ll be four in the morning before you know it.

2. Get a gaming console: My dad has a wii and my roommate has an Xbox.

I don’t remember ever playing as many video games as I played over this past break.

Before break, I made a pretty, shiny list of books I had to read. By the end of my six days at my dad’s house, I had only 10 pages read, but claimed the

high score with “Call Me Maybe” on “Just Dance 4.”

While my roommate is at work, I try to sneak in some time playing Fable II. I’ve finished it three times, and I just finished Fable III for the fourth time. But I just can’t stop.

If you’re looking for a time waster, those gaming consoles don’t disappoint.

3. Try marathon television watching: Something that is magical about our generation is that we have easy access to television shows whenever we want them. I don’t even have cable and I watch more television than I remember doing in high school.

I am addicted to every television show from “Doctor Who” to “How I Met Your Mother” to “Weeds.” Netflix is a glorious creation if you don’t feel like doing anything worthwhile.

I like to do what a friend of mine calls “marathon television watching.” I once spent four hours watching “How I Met Your Mother.” I finished the six seasons that were on Netflix in less than a month.

Marathon television watching is a great way to avoid real work. Try it sometime. You’ll be stuck with a bunch of useless knowledge about television shows.

4. Be productive elsewhere: Sometimes when I know I have a big paper due, I clean. And I never like to clean. However, on a Saturday when I know I should be working on homework, I might wake up and see a pile of dishes. Well I can’t work on homework until those dishes are done, right?

Rearrange your closet, vacuum your room, and all of sudden hours have passed and you are no closer to having anything you meant to do done.

In all seriousness, take your semester by storm. A little bit of procrastination can be a good thing, but a little bit of homework and productivity is even better. Welcome back to school and good luck this semester.
