CSC PROFESSOR CO-AUTHORS TIGER BEETLE FIELD GUIDE

Natural Sciences professor Dr. Mathew Brust will have research work featured in “Tiger Beetles of Minnesota, Wisconsin & Michigan,” a 112-page field guide set to release Feb. 15.

The guide features Brust’s work on 21 tiger beetle species. The majority

of Brust’s work was completed during his undergraduate years at University of Wisconsin-Steven’s Point, but Brust has taken the last two years to refine previous work and write additional content.

This is Brust’s third published field guide.

Senate announces several position vacancies Shannon Schneider Managing Editor In the first meeting of the spring semester, Senate announced various positions in student government, including senators at large and Constitutional Court justices, are vacant and in need of filling.

President Lukas Klueber, junior of Rapid City, South Dakota, notified Senate that a senator at large position has been opened. Previously, Ashley Cowley, sophomore of Box Elder, South Dakota, was serving as a senator at large, but due to credit transfer issues is now attending a different school. As of Monday’s meeting, two senator at large seats are open.

Chief Justice Sam Merrill, senior of Oral, South Dakota, also announced openings in Constitutional Court. Because of graduating members, the solicitor general position and a justice position are available. Merrill encouraged those who are interested to step forward, noting that in certain cases individuals can serve on both Senate and Court.

“The good thing about being solicitor general is that you

can be on Senate and any of the committees and still hold that position. With justice, you cannot serve on Student Senate or any of the other subcommittees,” Merrill said.

Merrill also reported that the spring election schedule has been set. The elections will be a week earlier than usual.

Though this means elections are “coming a lot faster,” Merrill explained that a move up was necessary because of the Easter break schedule.

“Because Easter Monday falls on what would typically be Inauguration Monday, we need to back it up a week,” Merrill said.

Petitions for Student Senate are due by 5 p.m., Friday, March 15 to Merrill. Because residence hall senators are selected in the fall, the elections will include all Student Senate positions except residence hall senator seats. Office hours to drop off petitions will be announced mid-February.

AFB proposed that clubs submit one budget packet with fall and spring semester budgets itemized separately. Vice President of Finance Lily Umeta, sophomore of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, explained that this move would make the budgeting

process easier and would better show the money coming in and what should be allocated.

“Because we get the money for spring semester separately, and fall semester, that would be easier for us to know exactly the money we’re getting and the money we should allocate for that semester,” Umeta said.

Umeta also reported the fall semester’s total programming allocations amounted to $36,247.35. Paired with last semester’s trip allocations, which came to $16,937.69, a total of $53,185.04 was spent in the fall. The numbers added to roughly 40% of the original allocation of $135,000, which Umeta called “a good thing.”

CAB Chair Kimberly Hernandez announced the Spring Club Fair will be held from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the Student Center Scottsbluff room. All clubs must have at least one representative at their table for the duration of the fair or be penalized with an absence.

Free Bowling Night will be held from 6-9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, at Hilltop Lanes. Free pizza will be provided.

Senate currently has $30.999.79 in unallocated funds.

CAB introduces date for January club fair Devin Fulton Reporter CAB Chair Kimberly Hernandez, senior of Scottsbluff, announced that CAB will host its spring semester club fair from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the Scottsbluff room.

The club fair is mandatory, and all clubs on campus are required to attend and represent. If a club does not attend, the result will be one absence.

Vice Chair of Records Kristina McGann, senior of Broken Bow, asked clubs to report any CAB representative or executive board changes as soon as possible.

Hansen encouraged students to come to him and Osmotherly as they would have with Dr. Beu. “Please don’t hesitate to me as you would Dr. Beu, or go visit Mr. Stephens, or Taylor, or [Title IX Coordinator] Ted Tewahade, when it comes to students and various issues,” Hansen said.

Student Trustee Dawson Brunswick, senior of McCook, reported Governor Pete Ricketts is set to announce his support to bring 50-80 scholarships to Chadron State College for Rangeland Management and Criminal Justice programs. If the legislation goes through, both incoming and existing students

could obtain scholarships.

Student Activities Coordinator Megan Northrup said the bugs and issues on the new SuperFanU app have been worked out.

However, if problems persist, Northrup asked students to alert her as soon as possible.

“If you want to take a screenshot and tell me what the problem is and email it to me right then, that will help us stay right on top of those app issues,” Northrup said.

For students having issues finding books, the csc.edu homepage has a link titled “Order Textbooks” under the Future and Current Students drop-down menu. Students can also find a link on the homepage banner.

CSC grad heading to Peace Corps assignment in Nepal George Ledbetter CSC College Relations When Joel Milos accepted his Chadron State College Bachelor of Science degree at the Winter Commencement ceremony December 14, he didn’t face the uncertainty about the future that confronts many students upon graduation.

That’s because Milos, a native of Bellevue, Nebraska, knows that he will soon be heading halfway around the world to work as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Himalayan nation of Nepal.

“I’ll be an agriculture volunteer, working for food security,” said Milos, who earned a Rangeland Management diploma with magna cum laude honors.

Milos’ interest in serving in the Peace Corps grew from a training session on wildlife conservation activities for students that he attended as part of a sophomore year course at CSC.

“One of the leaders was a returned Peace Corps volunteer,” he said. “She talked about it briefly and got me looking at it.”

A summer job as a cook at Yellowstone National Park put Milos in contact with people from all over the world furthering his interest in an international experience.

After deciding to graduate a semester early, Milos began looking in earnest at potential Peace Corps positions involved with agriculture development, a primary focus of the 57year old volunteer program.

“They had two that interested me. One in Nepal and one in Madagascar,” he said. “I settled on Nepal because I have heard so much about the natural beauty. I really wanted to go (there).”

In late June, two months after completing a detailed online application, Milos was contacted for an interview. About a month later he was invited to take the position, which involves soil conservation work, fruit tree culti-

vation and nutrition education in a community in western Nepal.

Milos said his rangeland degree was a definite plus in being accepted for Peace Corps service, because the agency has trouble finding people with agricultural training. While there isn’t much rangeland in mountainous Nepal, he thinks some of the subjects he studied will be useful in the job.

“A lot of the base courses do apply, like soil science and hydrology,” he said. “We learn about herbicide application and the effect of tillage on soils, and I’ve taken outside courses like entomology and botany.”

On Jan. 30, Milos will join a group other Peace Corps volunteers and fly to Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, where he will have about three months of cultural and language training before going on to the community where he will spend the next two years.

Through a Facebook group of new and recently returned volunteers he has received tips about what to expect and reassurance about the conditions he will encounter in the impoverished nation, which is still recovering from a long-running domestic rebellion and a devastating 2015 earthquake.

“It’s a pretty old program. They know how to run it,” he said. “Nepal was one of the first Peace Corps (locations).”

While in Nepal, Milos will receive a stipend to cover living expenses, and upon returning to the U.S. he’ll get a modest readjustment bonus.

But money didn’t play a part his desire to become a Peace Corps volunteer.

“The biggest interest I have is to represent the United States and to use my degree,” he said.

Milos said his long term plans after the Peace Corps are flexible.

“Ideally, I’d like to work for the National Park Service, but I’m pretty open to whatever happens,” he said.

And for now, he’s looking forward to the experience of living and working in a land and culture far different from his Nebraska home.

“It will be fun,” he said. “I think it will go by pretty quickly.”

Resolve to be better informed Shannon Schneider Managing Editor New Year’s resolutions are always a hit and miss. I’ve never been big on celebrating the New Year, so resolutions generally aren’t at the top of my list. One year I resolved to keep a diary and cut back on chocolate; fast-forward to today and I’ve got an unfilled journal and candy wrappers next to my bed, so that’s my track record in a nutshell.

Still, I like the idea of resolutions.

If a person wants to better themselves and set explicit goals, more power to them. I especially admire people who kick old habits and use their newfound time or energy, like losing a lot of weight and starting a fitness program, or overcoming an addiction and helping others who are struggling.

It’s little things that add up to the big goal. If we gradually keep on keepin’ on, we will get where we want to be.

In the spirit of mini-resolutions, let me offer up a resolution we can all keep: read a news article once a day.

Now, I’m not trying to use my ed-

itor position and preach at you all to read The Eagle more (although I’m appreciative when you do). Instead, I want to encourage our age group to get more in touch with the events unfolding around us. Pick an article from any local, state or national news source and absorb what the article says.

For an example, I read an article today from ABC News concerning the government shutdown and explaining how it’s affecting average Americans.

From it, I learned that although Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are

still operating, the IRS is not, meaning tax refunds could be delayed. I learned all of this from just ten minutes with an article, and it was time well spent.

Part of the problem, at least from what I have heard from my peers, is that many don’t know where to get their news from. Who should we trust, and how do we find those deemed trustworthy?

My tip? Avoid televised news or news provided by social media platforms.

It’s easy for news to be sensationalized, especially when it’s breaking and all the facts haven’t been gathered.

However, odds are if you’re reading an article in a paper, the reporters have already done the hard work for you and sifted through credible sources to bring you a factual, quality article.

As 2019 begins, let’s resolve to become more knowledgeable of the world around us. Don’t rely on your news from Snapchat or Facebook. Instead, actively pursue credible sources and find out what’s going on. The world is counting on our generation to make informed and impactful decisions, so let’s pick up a paper and get reading.

Strengthen your mind with reading

Rachel Mitchell Contributor One of my greatest passions is reading.

There is nothing better to me than finding a book I truly enjoy.

I know that is not the case for everyone.

There are some people who really struggle with finding a book they enjoy or just don’t care for it at all. Many people that I talk to about how they’ve struggled with literature is from a past experience in the educational system. Whether that be in middle school or high school some people found reading to be irrelevant because of what they had to go through. Unfortunately, now many people don’t pick up another book. But there are many undeniable benefits to reading.

I hope that this year if you have any resolution or hopes to start a new hobby that it would be reading, because it can really

change that way that you think and the way that you advance through school as well as life.

Possibly one of the most beneficial factors of reading is the way the i mp ro v e m e nt on yourself and others. Not only does seeing life through other people’s eyes help you get a different understanding of how the world around you works but also it might spark an understanding in yourself. You can probably relate to a lot more characters than you think.

You might not be exactly what the character is portraying but you might relate

to the characters driving theme of wanting success or desire to travel.

Maybe you read about a situation that is similar to what you are going through right now in your own life and can find a connection to the characters feelings. There is so much more to books than analyzing them and having to “understand the deeper meaning”.

Books give you the opportunity to look as in depth as you want to go. In that you have the chance to relate or learn as much as you want.

Another extremely beneficial factor of reading is being able to communicate more efficiently. It has been proven time and time again that reading helps expand your vocabulary and increase your ability to empathize with people. No matter what profession you go into or what you do with your life being able to communicate is essential. And if you

can do it well that is even more power to you.

If you are in business or legal studies it will make stand out if you are elevate the way you present your topics in your document.

And when you read you also learn about other people’s experiences and being able to view events you might not ever live through helps you be able to empathize with people easier because you’ve been able to see a similar situation before even if it was in a book.

Overall, there really is no downside to reading. It is a easy, portable, and cheap form of entertainment and it allows you to connect with people around you no matter where you are.

If you start a book and don’t like it don’t waste your time with it and get another you might like more. There is no shame in not finishing a book if you don’t like. So do yourself a favor this year and read a book or two extra than you normally. This might just be what turns 2019 into your year.

Take care of yourself and others in the new year Samantha Persinger Opinion Editor One of my favorite movies of all time is Cinderella. Not only because I watched it every single day as a child, but also as the role model the common girl, turned princess, is to me. When I started college the live action version of this classic Disney film, gave me the extra confidence to start a new chapter in my life, the quote from the movie I say in my head every day is “Have courage and be kind”. wwww I strive to be the best version of myself every day. Even with the help of my faith and supportive friends I still find myself with low self esteem.

So as a new year rolls around I have a New Year’s resolution for myself and for all of you who struggle with keeping positive confidence. Have the courage to be good to

yourself and be good to others.

This may seem like an easy task but being the 10th day of the year I have had a few struggles with my proposed resolution. We all do not have a fairy godmother to make everything better in an instant. I recommend start helping yourself. Eating well, getting exercise and finding peace, even in small amounts, will really get you on the right path of being good to you. Spend the time to reflect on your feelings whether it is writing

in a journal or talking to a counselor, I have found that getting negative thoughts out of my head has helped.

Make this year the year that you grow into the best version of yourself, and it all starts with a positive attitude and change.

The second part of this New Years resolution may sound easier but word of caution, though the people around you could be negative do not let that make you a negative person. I know being nice to others can be difficult.

People say you aren’t good enough, not smart enough, you cannot go to the royal ball. All though all these negatives are thrown at you, do not throw them back. Be good to others despite the fire. Smiling more often, appreciating small gestures and building stronger re-

lationships has helped me do good for others.

Everyone, even with evil flaws, deserve kindness. Not all that have evil flaws are strangers. Rebuilding relationships with estranged friends or family can contribute to make 2019 a positive year for you. Positive attitudes create positive people, whether that person is yourself or someone else. Defeating the negative thoughts and images I have floating in my head has made a better version of myself.

Though I have a long way to go I still say to myself every day “Have courage and be kind”.

I ask you to consider my proposed resolution and encourage others to use it too.

With my small New Year’s resolution, have courage to be kind to yourself and be kind to others, try it, you might find something magical within yourself.

Women win first games of 2019 Brandon Davenport Sports Editor The CSC Eagles’ women’s basketball team wasted no time getting into the win column this year, entertaining their home fans with a 67-57 defeat of the Adams State Grizzlies, Friday, and a thrilling 66-65 win over the Fort Lewis Skyhawks, Saturday.

Chadron’s Jessica Harvey, sophomore of Morrill, scored 11 points in the fourth quarter against Fort Lewis, tallying the Eagles’ final six points, including a jumper, to give the Eagles a one-point lead with 25 seconds remaining in the game.

Nearly half a minute of tense play followed as Chadron did their best to defend the narrow lead. The Eagles successfully stymied the Fort Lewis offense until, with just three seconds remaining, the Skyhawks rattled off three consecutive shots which all missed the mark, giving Chadron the win.

Setting the stage for Harvey’s fourth-quarter heroics was teammate Taryn Foxen, sophomore of Aurora, Colorado, who tallied 13 of her game-leading 27 points in the third quarter.

Foxen, along with teammates Jessica Lovitt, senior of Mullen, and Angelique Gall, freshman of Fruita, Colorado, sank all of their shots in the third, helping the team to a nearly 92-percent shooting percentage in the pivotal quarter.

“She knows how to get to the hole and can shoot the outside shot as well,” Eagles’ Head Coach Janet Raymer said of Foxen, who sank six-of-six shots from the field in the third, and 13 of 18, including two 3-pointers, throughout her game-leading 27-point performance.

“She’s such a versatile player that we can rely on her to do a lot for us,” Raymer said.

Trailing 30-24 after the first half, Foxen’s performance and Chadron’s excellent shooting helped the Eagles double their first half score in the third quarter alone.

“Coming out of the locker room we were able to capitalize on what we do well, which is

pressuring our opponent, and the shots started falling,” Raymer said, “unlike in the first quarter.”

Harvey finished the game as Chadron’s second-highest scorer with 13 points. The sophomore from Morrill shot 60 percent including a single 3-pointer.

Friday, the Eagles 67-57 win over Adams State helped break a 10-game losing streak. The Eagles had an early 15-11 lead over the Grizzlies after the first period and never trailed through the rest of the game.

Harvey led the Eagles with 20 points against Adams State, and Gall had 17. Foxen was limited to just four points in the game.

The now 3-10 Eagles will face the first big test of 2019 as they head back on the road, Friday, for a matchup with 9-2 Westminster College who is undefeated in RMAC play and second only to Colorado Mesa University.

Saturday the team travels to St. George, Utah to face 6-5 Dixie State University. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. GMT.

After ringing in the New Year with a 93-86 win over Adams State University, Friday, at the Chicoine Center, the Chadron State men’s basketball team was just seconds away from another home win, Saturday, but a buzzer beating shot ultimately led to a 100-88 overtime win for Fort Lewis College.

Down 81-78, with just seconds remaining in Saturday’s game, Fort Lewis guard Alex Semadeni, senior of Fort Collins, Colorado, collected an offensive rebound, then ran to the northwest corner of the court just beyond the 3-point arc, spun, and sent a long shot toward the net.

With the buzzer sounding in the background the ball slid neatly through the net, sending the game into overtime and setting momentum firmly in the Skyhawks’ favor.

The timely 3-pointer was Semadeni’s third in just the final 32 seconds of regulation. The Fort Lewis senior scored a career-high 37 points in the game, sinking five 3-pointers while shooting 78-percent from the field and collecting 12 points on 14 free throws.

“He played with an edge tonight,” Chadron Head Coach Houston Reed said of Semadeni. “They have a player that’s been in their program and he really made some big shots and some big time plays.”

In overtime Chadron would hit just two of nine shots from the field while surrendering 19 points to the Skyhawks.

Chadron trailed Fort Lewis 40-30 heading into the fourth quarter, but chipped away at the Skyhawk lead until Adoum Mbang senior of Yaounde, Cameroon, was fouled on a layup and gave the Eagles a 68-67 lead on the 3-point play late in the quarter.

against the Skyhawks with a 21 point night. Chadron’s Diontae Champion, senior of Pearl, Mississippi, shot 70-percent on the night for 19 points and Colby Jackson, junior of Las Vegas, Nevada, had 14.

The previous day saw a battle between the RMAC’s third ranked offense in Adams State, and the third ranked defense in Chadron, which played out to a 41-41 tie at the half before opening up in favor of the Eagles.

Chadron got on the board first in the second and never trailed through the final half.

“I thought that we competed for 40 minutes (against Adams State),” Reed said, “It wasn’t all pretty, but I thought that we competed.”

“Adams is a team that can really score the basketball,” Reed continued, “and teams that can usually score the basketball struggle to guard the basketball. We’re trying to be a team that’s a little bit of both. We found some matchups that we took advantage of and we shot at a good percentage.”

Chadron shot 51.8-percent against the Grizzlies, their highest this season.

Champion had a big game scoring 16 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, and flirted with becoming the second Eagle to ever achieve a triple-double by adding eight assists.

Against the Grizzlies, the Eagles were led in scoring by Jackson and Mbang who both hit the 20-point mark.

“Adoum (Mbang) has really come along,” Coach Reed said following the senior’s second 20-point night, Saturday. “He’s gotten to be a guy we can dump the ball down into the block towards the end of the game and he can give us some production down there.”

The now 6-7 Eagles travel to face Westminster, Friday.

Wrestlers start year with RMAC duals Brandon Davenport Sports Editor The Chadron State wrestling squad had a short holiday break and is already off to a quick start in the new year competing in three locations last week. The Eagles earned a 25-21 dual victory at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico, Friday, then fell 28-12, Saturday, in a dual with Adams State University, in Alamosa, Colorado.

Also, a group of Eagle wrestlers not scheduled to partake in the duals took it upon themselves to travel and compete at the Hastings College Cusatis Open, in Hastings, Saturday.

Eagles’ Head Coach Brett Hunter brought his group back early from Christmas break to ensure his guys started the year off right, he says, as this year success in dual competition holds even more weight than usual.

Going forward, the RMAC will no longer host its own championship. Instead, each team will match up in duals throughout the season with the conference championship awarded to the team with the best record.

Notable among the wins was a 197-pound bout between CSC’s Wade French, junior of Heriman, Utah, and Highlands’ Chris Collins, senior of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“Chris Collins is pretty tough,” Coach Hunter said, “He has two or three losses this season, all to Division I wrestlers.

“We were wrestling at pretty high elevation and Wade was tired, Collins was tired, but Wade’s got enough heart that he pushed through it and was able to score and put him to his back.”

Against Highlands, Friday, and again Saturday at Adams State, the Eagles were forfeited the 125-pound match. “We’re not at full strength, but we found a way to win,” Hunter said of the dual with Highlands.

French, Otuafi, Chase Clasen, junior of Moses Lake, Washington, at 149-pounds, and Matt Hebel, junior of Erie, Colorado, at 174-pounds earned wins for Chadron. Just two of the dual’s bouts ended with pins.

“There were a couple matches we gave away that we shouldn’t have,” Hunter said of the matchup. “We had our horses, the Wade French’s the Chase Clasen’s; Matt Hebel and Jake Otuafi both went 2-0, so that’s exciting – they’re wrestling well at the right time. Adams State is a great team and they’re just better than us right now.”

Seven CSC wrestlers took part in the Hastings College open, Saturday, none more successful than heavyweight Mason Watt, freshman of Broomfield, Colorado, who was 4-2 with three pins.

Thursday, the Eagles face a steep challenge as they travel to dual CSU-Pueblo. The Thunderwolves are currently tied for 11th in the NCAA DII Wrestling Coaches Association Top 25.

Among CSU-Pueblo’s four ranked wrestlers is D’Andre Brumfield, junior of Dallas, at 133-pounds and Gavin Nye, freshman of Gerber, California, in the heavyweight class.

Both wrestlers are ranked fourth in DII.
