Senate swears in new vice chair of finance Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor Hannah Love was nominated, approved, and sworn in as the new vice chair of finance. Kirby Krogman stepped down from the position due to his December 2014 graduation.

Love reported $95,993.25 in unallocated funds.

Jon Lordino, chief justice, said last semester Senate allocated $25,000 for new pool tables for The Pit. The tables will only cost $23,000 so the extra $2,000 will go to pool cues, pool balls, and any unexpected situations that may come up with the moving of the old tables.

The latest the tables will be in would be during midterm break in March. They will either put the tables in then or they will close off The Pit sometime before that so the

tables can get moved.

President Dillion Spies said if any clubs or groups on campus want more information or for the senators to present to the clubs about the trip to Florida, they can contact him to set that up. He also said he wants to fill Senate up this semester. There are spots open for all the schools (B.E.A.M.S.S., E.H.P.C.P.S.W., Liberal Arts), at-large positions, and Kent Hall.

Marci Luton, senator of Kent, suggested talking to the people who campaigned for positions but didn’t get elected since they have already shown interest in Senate.

Michael Hall reported that if anyone is complaining about the slow internet speed, it should be picking up by the end of the month. Also, the program that you have to download when you connect to the internet is only there to make sure you have an

antivirus program on your computer.

Taylor Osmotherly, senator Edna, resigned from his position because he has class during meeting times.

CAB asked for Senate to approve Chelsea Evans as the new vice chair of programming and Mikayla Gallagher as the vice chair of relations.

Laure Sinn reminded Senators Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. day.

Dr. Nesheim has schedule panels all day Monday morning. There will be different panels from 9 a.m. - noon.

At 1:30 p.m., the march will start at the corner of Main and Third streets.

“The Drum Majors Instinct” speech will be played during the march. She said they will have vans available for rides if students don’t have a car or don’t want to drive to the start. She also said the Health 101 magazine is now available to students in their emails. Sinn would

Stephanie Steele, vice chair of records, asked for updated constitutions and club packets. She also said if clubs have a new represen-

tation this semester to come talk to her so she can make that change.

Gallagher said if clubs want their events promoted on the CAB’s social media to come talk to her.

Breann Greer asked to be an at-large CAB representative.

Martin explained that because the number of at-large representatives can equal up to 10 percent of the number of campus clubs there can be four positions.

Martin said they will vote on Greer’s request at next week’s meeting.

The wildlife club and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Club that is trying to start up have meetings at 11 a.m., Thursdays in Burkhiser 231 if anyone is interested in joining the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Club.

With the help of Jon Hansen, enrollment management, marketing and student services vice president, Sinn asked Senate to consider helping to sponsor a Title IX speaker, Jackson Katz, on March 19 in the Chicoine Events Center. She wants this to be “a big deal,” and “why not fill up the entire 4,000 seats in” the Chicoine Events Center for this. Sinn is working on getting food, prizes, and T-shirts for the event. She said she will be asking Senate to allocate some money next week to help cover the costs of bringing Katz to CSC. Student Trustee Jacob Rissler said Sherri Simons is the interim Title IX coordinator, so if there are any problems that need to be dealt with, con-

tact her. He also said Student Trustee applications are available and due at noon, Feb. 9. The only requirements for this position are to be an undergrad and have three letters of recommendation from CSC staff to go with the application. Anyone of the student body can apply. The applications can be found at csc.edu/ student senate and are due to Kathy Mason’s office on the third floor of Crites. Rissler will then set up a committee to recommend three people to Dr. Rhine for selection.

The board meeting is next weekend so Rissler said if there is anything that students want brought up at the meeting to get ahold of him.

Rissler also talked to Tracy Shuck, dining services director, about the coffee shop. The shop will now be open from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. without the break like it had last semester.

Chadron gas prices continue to be lowest in the state Sarah Townsend News Editor

Gas prices in Chadron continue to hold the slot of lowest in the state.

According to AAA Nebraska, the state average price for regular unleaded fuel is $2.01, with Chadron holding the lowest of the averaged prices.

According to GasBuddy.com Wednesday morning, the Chadron Common Cents station set the price for a unleaded regular gallon of fuel at $1.60, lower than most of the country.

Beginning in early December 2014, Chadron has been home to a very active “gas war.”

The opening of the new Maverik station on Dec. 10, 2014, correlates directly with the start of the falling prices.

Prices on Dec. 10, 2014, were at $2.35 and have since declined to $1.62, a 73 cent drop in just over a month.

AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report states that

the reason for the plummeting prices of gasoline is due to the falling crude oil prices.

Prices for a barrel of crude oil have dropped from a high of $107 to $47, reports AAA. Chadron is not the only city feeling the welcomed effects of the recent drop in crude oil prices.

The nation’s least expensive gas is found in the mid-continent states, but the national average has dropped more than 40 percent to $2.13 a gallon.

The falling price for gasoline has created a far more college-student-friendly traveling experience, especially over the holiday season when most students return to their hometowns.

Jenna McBride, 19, junior of Victorville, California, thought that the lowered gas prices affected her trip back home in terms of making traveling on the road much cheaper.

“It was very helpful, once we got into Utah, we really noticed the prices dropping,” McBride said.

he tragic events that unfolded last week in Paris have gripped headlines around the world.

On Jan. 7, two gunmen entered the offices of French satire magazine Charlie Hebdo and opened fire, killing 10 people. The gunmen were reportedly motivated by the magazine’s publication of comics depicting the Prophet Mohammad, a practice that is forbidden by Islam. The gunmen swore vengeance.

The Eagle editorial board decided to republish the cartoon of Mohammad, which appeared on the cover of the Jan. 15 issue of Charlie Hebdo, on our front page.

We feel the need to stand in solidarity with the journalists and cartoonists of Charlie Hebdo, who are persevering in the face of terrorism. Their work is not in vain. This move is not an attempt to shamelessly incite violence or controversy, nor is it a callous attempt to offend.

Rather, our aim is to demonstrate and underscore the freedoms granted by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. No act of terrorism has the power to strip away the freedom of the press; not on our watch.

In short, Je Suis Charlie: We are Charlie.

Stick to your goals this New Year Richard Heule III

ey, it’s 2015! By this point, we should have hoverboards and Michael J. Fox should be a teenager again, right? I don’t know, I didn’t see Back to the Future Part 2.

What I do know is that it’s the time of year when people make a lot of New Year’s Resolutions, and then end up forgetting about them a few weeks later.

Well you know what? Stop it. If you want to commit yourself to something, then DO IT. Stop making excuses!

Ironically, making excuses is something I do more than the average person, so I’m going to stop doing that. This semester, I’m going to try and do a variety of things.

First and foremost, I’m going to get fit, because being fat is a giant pain in the ass, and I want to get jacked so I can brag about my gains and shame people for skipping leg day.

Second, I’m going to get good at Magic the Gathering, because I’m going to Las Vegas in May to play in a huge tour-

nament, and winning $10,000 would be really nice (that pays for about ¼ of a semester of college).

In all seriousness, it’s nice to have goals. It keeps you motivated and takes attention away from the not-so-nice things in your life. If people didn’t have goals, nobody would have the drive to do anything.

I tried living life goal-free for a couple years, and it ended up with me sitting on my ass playing Minecraft until everything looked like pixels. It’s not good to live life in a bubble, holed up in your room, waiting for the C Store to open so you can feed your addiction of buffalo chicken flatbread sandwiches (please

bring them back, I’m having withdrawals).

I won’t lie, I’ve tried to hold myself to goals in the past, but if I stuck to them, I probably wouldn’t be in the position I am now. But hey, when you’re at the bottom, the only place to go is up. So go ahead and stick to your goals.

If you do, really cool things could happen to you. I don’t know what you’re goals are, but I’m sure that they will end up benefiting you in some way, unless your goal is to do absolutely nothing at all, which is a pretty bad goal.

I know you’ve probably heard every single motivational thing in the book, and then some. People can tell you to get motivated every single day, and it won’t do a single thing. Well, I’m not the shining example of optimism 90 percent of the time, but even I can say things will get better. But you have to take the first steps. The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is right now.

Women lose home game, 78-69 Christopher Smith Reporter Chadron State women’s basketball team fell to Black Hills State University Saturday in a 78-69 loss.

Chelsey Biegler, senior of Rapid City, South Dakota, led BHSU with a 25-point performance. BHSU’s supporting cast also helped contribute to the win against the Eagles.

Senior Logan Cowan, of Highmore, South Dakota, and freshman Jennie Scharn, of Rapid City, South Dakota, tailed 11 points. Senior Courtney Patterson, of Rock Springs, Wyoming, pitched in a solid effort with 10 points.

was a force in the paint in the first half, outscoring Black Hills State University, 20-12, including eightsecond chance points.

Junior Stephanie Knowles, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, led the first half effort with six rebounds and five points. Turnovers were a problem for CSC in the first half leaving them trailing going into halftime, 38-31.

The Eagles had a hard time recapturing the lead once they lost it. Black Hills led by as many as 15 points.

The second half was nearly an even matchup, but CSC could never go on a solid run. The Eagles, however, outscored the Yellow Jackets in the paint, 36-28. The Yellow Jackets outscored CSC in the second half, 40-38.

Maka Daysh, freshman of Tauranga, New Zealand, led CSC with 15 points including six straight points in the first half. Emma Block, junior of Copenhagen, Denmark, helped with a 14-point effort and senior Kate Simonton, of Bakersfield, California, helped chime in with 11 points, shooting 4-6 from the field.

The Yellow Jackets outshot CSC from the field 52 percent to 41 percent. Yellow Jackets also outshot the Eagles from beyond the arc with 44 percent, while CSC went cold shooting three for 18 beyond the arc.

CSC will be traveling to New Mexico for their next set of RMAC games playing New Mexico Highlands on Friday and traveling to Western New Mexico Saturday.

The Eagles fought hard in a back and forth battle between rival Black Hills State University, but came up just short, 62-61.

The largest lead in the game was only seven points, held by CSC late in the first half. A 10-2 Yellow Jackets’ run to close the half quickly turned that around. The biggest lead for BHSU was five. With 12 seconds left in the game, Christopher Smith, senior guard of Pasadena, California, hit a clutch three to bring the Eagles within two.

Wyatt Krogman, a junior guard for the Yellow Jackets of White River, South Dakota, split a pair of free throws, extending the lead back to three. A last-second foul by BHSU

put Kendrick Holliman, senior forward of Spanish Fort, Alabama, on the line. Holliman sank both, closing the gap back to one.

On the following possession, senior guard Evan Brooks, of Ontario, California, stole the inbounds pass but couldn’t get the half-court shot to fall.

BHSU outscored the Eagles in the paint, 40-30. Overall the shot charts for both teams were close; CSC shooting 43.4 percent from the field while BHSU shot 44 percent.

Holliman and Smith accounted for more than half of the Eagles points, 17 and 15, respectively. Junior forward Davante McCallam, of Miami, added eight points for the Eagles. Brooks added six points and three boards.

The Eagles will tip off against New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas at 7 p.m., Friday.

Civil Rights Movement art on display for MLK day Photo Editor

Images of African-Americans and Caucasians peaceably protesting, being beaten, and jailed are only some on display for the “Road to the Promised Land” exhibit in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center, borrowed from the nonprofit organization, Humanities Texas.

The exhibit begins with the Civil Rights Movement, starting when Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a Caucasian man in Montgomery, Alabama. Following Parks’ arrest, AfricanAmericans boycotted, the buses for 382 days. During the boycott, Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested for the first time for helping organize a bus boycott protest.

A display of leaders who risked their lives, such as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and Marcus Garvey, is toward the beginning of the exhibit and sets the flow. Following those, images from King sitting in the Birmingham Jail, walking in the March on Washington and the Selma March, and King’s funeral procession lay out the Civil Rights Movement.

Walking through the exhibit, emotions ranging from anger to sadness may be experienced. Some images show the graphic experiences African-Americans and Caucasians dealt with while peaceably fighting for the end of segregation.

As part of the Civil Rights Movement, Malcolm X is briefly shown.

This display depicts images of violence and quotes by King during that time of the movement. King was against the use of violence to end segregation, while Malcolm X and his followers believed violence was the only way to reach a solution.

King moved to Chicago, where African-Americans’ quality of life was deteriorating. After only living there for a short time, King expressed even his family’s attitude was negatively impacted, and he knew something had to change.

While in Memphis, King was quoted saying, “I think I made one mistake. I underestimated the depth of hate in America.”

This came after being in Memphis and witnessing the depth of hate many Caucasians had for African-Americans.

“We brought [the exhibit] in for Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Black History month,” Sarah Polak, director of the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center, said.

Polak added that the exhibit ties with classes on campus and it is their hope “to stimulate great discussions.”

Staff, students perform for funds Hannah Clark Web Editor There was a celebratory tone at the Music Teachers National Association Benefit Concert on Tuesday. Bill Mullins acted as host for the hour-long performance, which featured three students and four professors. The concert raised money for four music students to attend the fourth annual MTNA Collegiate Piano Pedagogy Symposium in Dallas. Talia Enevoldsen, Jayne Barrow, Megan Anderson, and Emily Helsel created a posterpresentation about the dangers of long-term hearingloss for music educators and performers. The four will present their findings, along with awareness and prevention methods, at the symposium.

Enevoldsen, Barrow and, Anderson performed at the beginning of the concert, Enevoldsen presenting a melodic Debussy piece involving hand-switching and overlapping scales, while Barrow lightened the mood with an upbeat ragtime piece. CSC’s educators joined the music when Anderson played flute alongside Brooks Hafey, on piano. Her contribution turned from an earnest, pastoral melody to a passionate and dramatic piece, which had the audience nodding with approval.

Mullins, a music instructor, got the idea to hold the benefit concert from fellow MTNA colleagues who held the same kind of event to support their own student’s attendance. This MTNA symposium is held exclusively

for college students, so they might experience presenting and networking before the national conference.

“It’s an experience of a life time,” Mullins said. “twenty-one colleges attend, and this is where I’ve met most of my colleagues. You’re with your peers, and it’s, as educators like to say, high-impact learning.”

Following the students, Mullins performed two pieces, the latter of which he described as an Italian gondolier’s song. This dark, contemplative melody completed the first portion of the concert, and afterwards Hafey and Bobby Pace took the stage. The pair performed “They All Sang Yankee Doodle,” a piece by Dave Brubeck which requires a pair of piano players to reinvent common tunes. For such a cheerfully-titled song, the duo pianos created a thunderous, grandiose sound that played off children’s melodies. The pair turned familiar diddles into a piano-pounding mini-concert.

Following this, another impressive piano partnership wowed the audience. Hafey and Pace manned one piano, while Mullins and James Margetts, interim dean of liberal arts, sat at the other. They introduced the piece as “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” a popular Sousa piece with a complicated twist. All four pianists played the piece, together, on two pianos. The educators got the idea from the Brigham Young Piano Quartet, which has “brought back four-person piano compositions,” according to Mullins. The performance earned CSC’s quartet a standing ovation. This song, celebrating a country’s independence, seemed like a fitting finale to a concert celebrating four student’s passion for music.
