Senate to host seminar, CAB allocates for 'The Voice' Kathryn Sullivan Reporter Student Senate is starting the spring semester of 2014 with $98,814 in unallocated funds.

To kick off the new semester, an allocation for $100 was made for refreshments for sessions where the executive board will be sharing the knowledge gathered from the conference attended in New Orleans in November. There will be four sessions available to students all on Jan. 22 at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 4 p.m., and 5 p.m. The location of these sessions is to be determined and senators are required to attend at least one of the sessions.

of changes being made to the CAB constitution and Senate constitution, removing requirements that large events must go through CAB and have club affiliation. For example, he used “The Big Event” and the concerns of planners that having one club affiliations will not promote a campus-wide involvement. He also reminded senators of the Activity Fee Board committee and that select senators will be serving on this committee along from three representatives from CAB. Deena Kennell, career and academic planning services director, has taken the adviser spot previously filled by Aaron Prestwich for senate and CAB. CAB is starting off the semester with $8,652 in unallocated funds.

night this Sunday, and $1,500 for expenses for The Voice competition.

The winner of The Voice competition will be sent to Nashville, Tenn. to audition for the actual show in February.

The new attendance policy is underway with the three mandatory meeting dates being announced; February 11, March 4, and the April date is to be determined.

CAB Chair Lane Swedberg said that the attendance policy was not meant to discourage clubs representatives from going to the meetings, and said “it makes no sense for your club to get punished for missing a CAB meeting.”

Josh Keating, senator of liberal arts, presented an idea to both senate and CAB for a dance marathon with a date projected for the next fall semester.

Newblom foundation accepting applications for scholarships Spike Jordan News Editor The Darold A. Newblom Foundation is accepting applications for grants and scholarships to be awarded in May. Newblom operated his family’s farm near Hay Springs, until poor health forced him to retire in 1980. He lived in Alliance until his death on Dec. 15, 1988.

The foundation was established under the Newblom’s Last Will and Testament.

This is the twenty-fourth year that the Alliance-based foundation has awarded grants and scholarships, according to a press release from Wally A. Sellier, foundation secretary-treasurer.

The foundation’s mission is to provide

support for activities that engage the moral, mental, intellectual, and physical development of young men and women in Box Butte and Dawes Counties; to provide scholarships in assisting students in obtaining an education; and to assist in the founding, equipping and maintaining of associations or institutions engaged in the advancement of learning.

Students with educational plans that coincide with the foundation’s mission, are encouraged to obtain an application by contacting Seiler at (308) 762-4693 or mailing a request to 1208 Laramie Ave., Alliance, Neb., 69301 Applications must be submitted to the foundation’s board of directors no later than March 31.

Opinion Editor Again, it might be surmised that one’s reply to this question, regardless of the context of the situation, is almost always one’s answer.

Desiring change will likely lead to a higher chance of creating change.

Just as deep waters govern over many sands, deep commitments will lead to many benefits.

Likewise, shallow commitments will lead to you grasping vainly at change just like shallow waves grasp vainly for sand.

And during the change, it will be hard to notice the process, but you will notice it afterward. Just like you can see your reflection before and after the freezing of lake, but not during.

Who is to say what is impossible?

Any combination of words we can make or say, in the wake of waves, will wash away. Everything that means anything regarding this question is what you believe.

Men win two and lose five over break Ashley Swanson Managing Editor Since the beginning of the season, the men’s basketball team has had its share of ups and downs, which leaves them with a record of 6-7.

On Dec. 14, 2013, CSC faced Colorado School of Mines, Golden. Making 41.9 percent of its shots, CSC trailed behind Colorado Mines for most of the game. Guard Evan Brooks, junior of Ontario, Calif., made three of his five field goals and three of his four 3-pointers. By the end of the first half the score was 44-39. Forward Zac Bargen, senior of Chadron, made nine of 10 free throws. The final score was 86-80.

CSC went 2-4 on the next six games played during break. CSC played Colorado Christian University, Lakewood, on Dec. 15, 2013—the final score was 71-67. CSC made 40 percent of its field goals; 32 percent of 3-pointers; and 80 percent of free throws.

On Dec. 20, 2013, CSC faced Regis University, Denver, winning 67-61. The next day, Dec. 21, 2013, the last game of the year, faced the Eagles against Metropolitan State University, Denver.

Point guard Josiah Lee, junior of Colorado Springs, and forward Kendrick Holliman, junior of Spanish Fort, Ala., racked in points by making four

of five field goals. The final score was Metro State, 83, CSC, 71.

CSC lost to Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colo., 78-72, on Jan. 3, and to Adams State College, Alamosa, Colo., 86-74, Jan. 4.

“We have been consistently inconsistent,” Head Coach Brent Bargen said Wednesday.

He said there have been interchanging parts during the season from illness to injury. “We don’t have the same line-up,” Bargen said. “I’m pretty happy where we are, we just need to be consistent.”

CSC won against Black Hills State University, Spearfish, S.D., on Jan. 9 with a final score of 82-81.

Black Hills State led the game for the first half of the game, ending the first half 35-33. Although BHSU continued leading throughout the second half, CSC steadily responded, tying the score up more than once. CSC made 55 percent of its field goals, and 68 percent of its free throws. A lastminute shot by Lee pushed CSC 80 to 82, awarding them a win.

Being ready to play at a high level and maximizing potential are a couple of things the team needs to focus on, Bargen said.

There are 13 games left in the season, seven of which are home games. CSC’s next competition is a home game at 7:30 Friday against New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas.

Bargen leads the team in points and rebounds, 49 defensive and 17 offensive. He’s posted 161 points this season. He also tallied 66 rebounds.

Chadron State women’s basketball team lost against Black Hills State University, Spearfish, S.D., 89-45, on Jan. 9. That marked the seventh straight loss against the Yellow Jackets for the Eagles.

Kattie Ranta, senior of Rapid City, S.D., led the Eagles with 17 points in the contest. Kayli Rageth, senior of Kimball, scored 10 points along with 12 rebounds.

The Eagles made 18 of 54 from the field, and they were five of nine from the free throw line.

Adams State defeated the Eagles in overtime, 66-

54, on Jan. 4, in Alamosa, Colo.

Rageth led the Eagles with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Dallas Shaw, junior of Buffalo, Wyo., scored 13 points.

The Eagles shot 42 percent from the field, and they were eight of 16 from the free throw line.

The Eagles also lost against Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colo., 85-83, on Jan. 3. Ashley Kuchar, senior of Provo, Utah, sealed deal for the Skyhawks when she made a layup with one second left in the game.

The Eagles shot 48 percent from the floor including 10 of 16 from downtown.

Rageth scored a career high 27 points. Ranta and Shaw scored both 19 points.

The Eagles are now 1-12 overall and 1-8 in conference. They will host New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas, at 5:30 Friday. CSC will face Western New Mexico University, Silver City, in Chadron at 5:30 Saturday.

Wrestling team wins three duals, boosts record to 3-3 CSC hosts two duals and travels to one in Valentine Janelle Kesterson Reporter

Live wrestling action is back at Chadron State College this evening starting at 7 p.m. against the New Mexico Highlands University Cowboys, Las Vegas. The Cowboys are bringing their 2-0 record to challenge the Eagles. The Eagles are currently 3-3.

The students at Chadron State College have enjoyed a month long break. However, over Christmas break, they competed in three duals and gained the advantage in all three.

The Eagles competed first against the 3-7 Dickinson State University Blue Hawks, Dickinson, N.D.; second against the 2-2 Northern State University Wolves, Aberdeen, S.D., and third against the 4-6 Morningside College Mustangs, Sioux City, Iowa.

In the push against the Blue Hawks, the Eagles beat their opponents in all but one weight class.

Alex Kopp, redshirt freshman of Yuma, Colo., at 125-pounds; Jay Stine, redshirt freshman of Worland, Wyo., 141-pounds; Cj Clark, junior of Rapid City, S.D., 157-pounds; Tyler Smart, junior of Wheatland, Wyo., 165-pounds; Dylan Fors, junior of Roseburg, Ore., 174-pounds; and Jordan DeBus, senior of Mitchell, 197-pounds, tallied six decisions.

Jacob Anderson, freshman of Central City, 149-pounds, tallied CSC’s one major decision. Devan Fors, junior of Roseburg, Ore., 197-pounds, tallied CSC’s one technical fall, and Dustin Stodola, senior of Clarkson, 133-pounds, accomplished the Eagle’s single pin.

Chadron State also pushed the pace offensively, finishing

with 22 takedowns and had seven near-falls. The final score was 33-4.

Three days after the home turf victory over Dickinson State, the Eagles were matched up against the Northern State Wolves, who met the same end as the Blue Hawks.

The Wolves won three matches and the Eagles won the remaining seven matches.

The Eagle’s three loses were decisions. Stodola, Clark, Smart, and Dylan Fors secured their wins with decisions.

Anderson and Michael Hill, junior of Fort Laramie, Wyo., accomplished pins.

The final score was 28-9.

The Eagles rounded out their wrestling action over break by traveling to Valentine to overtake the Morningside Mustangs.

They won the dual with a score of 27-15 by accomplishing five of seven match wins.

Stodola, Stine, DeBus, and Fors won their matches by forfeit, and Dylan Fors won his match by decision.

Former Chadron State football player, Garrett Gilkey, will be returning to Chadron on Jan. 19. Gilkey plays for the Cleveland Browns as an offensive lineman. He was selected in the seventh round, 227th overall, of the 2013 NFL Draft.

He intends on graduating from Chadron State in May. He will be available to sign autographs and take photos at the Bean Broker. The autographs and photos are free of charge, and Gilkey will be available from 1-4 p.m.

Do you need a body guard? I have the perfect gal for the job. Sarah Lecher is a holder of a black belt in martial arts and even assists in instruction of her art. Sarah is a native Chadron-ite and CSC is lucky to be graced with her presence. In her time at CSC, she studies theatre and has been active in the department, especially in “Little Shop of Horrors”. This upbeat chick is a familiar face around Project Strive and brings a good laugh to all events and activities. In her spare time, she is a movie enthusiast which fits perfectly with her future career goal of being a filmmaker.

The Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month award recognizes outstanding students who are members of the organization. Each month, a participating student is selected for the award based upon her or his work in Project Strive/TRiO and other activities on campus or in the community. Award winners will receive a plaque from Project Strive and have their photo placed in the “Project Strive/TRiO 2013-14 Student of the Month” Achievement Recognition board. The board, located in the Strive Learning Center, is themed The Essence of Success: “Successful is the person who has lived well, laughed often and loved much, who has gained the respect of children, who leaves the world better than they found it, who has never lacked appreciation for the earth’s beauty, who never fails to look for the best in others or give the best of themselves.”

Don’t worry, be happy should be the theme song for Aisea Tremaine. Aisea comes to CSC from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. This recreation major is a gem in the Project Strive program. He always comes in with a positive attitude and encourages other participants to be the best person they can be. In his free time, Aisea enjoys hanging out with his close-knit group of friends, sleeping, and plays a mad game of volleyball.

He boasts a winning title for two on two intramural sand volleyball for CSC. Not only is Aisea active in the community, but is an extremely active member of Chi-Alpha.

Now this is the story all about how. His life got flipped, turned upside down. And I’d like to take a minute just sit right there.

I’ll tell you how he came from San Diego to a town called Chadron. Ryan is a transfer student from Grossmont College, studying sports and recreation management. This business savvy student possesses many leadership skills that will make him extremely successful in the long run. He is a true asset to Project Strive and we can only hope other students follow his dedicated work ethic and study skills. In his free time, Ryan enjoys fishing, basketball, and weightlifting. With a charismatic personality, one can usually find him among a crowd of close friends.

“Take me out to the ball game” might be a common tune sung by Nicholle Lang, that is, if it is a Colorado Rockies game. This sports enthusiast not only likes baseball, but her other favorite sporting teams include: Denver Broncos, Huskers, and Chicago Cubs. This senior elementary education major of Scottsbluff, Nebraska also enjoys shopping, swimming, softball, and her beloved dog Izzy. She finds the unique balance of campus involvement: Chi Alpha and Project Strive, academics, and friends. With her bubbly, caring, and creative personality, Nicholle will truly make a fantastic elementary teacher in the very near future.

The holiday hangover: Getting back on track Cheyenne Deering Lifestyles Editor We all spend the Holidays differently. The time is spent with family, away from home, on vacation, and sometimes on the couch going into a Netflix coma. One common aspect of almost all holidays and celebrations is food. These past few months I have been bombarded with more sweets than Willie Wonka’s factory, not to mention Christmas hams, mashed potatoes, and stacks of pie, literally.

Every year before the holiday season I resolve to avoid all of these delicious temptations, and every year I fail. During Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve I ate more than a starving village’s yearly ration.

Now that the holidays are over I can no longer use the, “I mean, it is Christmas month” excuse, or the, “Well, there is no use in dieting before the New Year,” excuse either. It is officially time to pick up the pieces of our shattered healthy

lives and start fresh.

I thought about creating my own New Years resolutions to lose weight and run a certain number of miles a week.

Let’s be honest, how many New Years resolutions have I kept? I haven’t read any books worth mentioning, taken any dance classes, and I continue to eat ice cream.

This year I simply resolved to live healthier. I decided New Years resolutions are overrated and rarely followed through and they also have an expiration date. A healthy lifestyle should be just that, a lifestyle. It should not be something you begin and then binge on Cheetos as soon as the next year rolls around.

If you have Facebook you are most likely sick of bloggers and their New Year tips. I am not going to tell you to eat a salad everyday or that you should take ridiculous risks in your 20’s.

If you need to beat that holiday muffin top (cookie top, pie top, mashed potato top, etc.), just make some small changes throughout your daily life to make it happen. Go

Fast Facts Simple ways to make a lasting change

→Make time to exercise.

No matter how long or short, anything is better than nothing.

→Cut back on junk food.

Start small by replacing one snack a day with an apple.

for a walk instead of snacking. Cut back and only sample the desert bar once a week. Do not set yourself unrealistic standards like losing 15 pounds this week or quitting all “bad foods” cold turkey. Do what you know you can handle and set small goals along the way.

In the end, do what is going to be best for you. If you are happy with your health, then stay that way! Just because it is a New Year, you do not have to be a new you. No matter what, you are exactly who you are supposed to be. Only you decide if you need improvement.

As for me, I will see my fellow Holiday bingers on the treadmills.

→Only change for yourself.

You will never be satisfied if you’re changing for someone else. Only your opinion matters.
