CSC hosts the early childhood conference Nalani Stewart News Editor The 29th annual Excellence in Early Childhood Conference will be held on Friday, Feb. 16, and Saturday, Feb. 17, on the CSC campus.

The theme of the conference will be “United We Stand for Children…Balanced and Barefoot!” Sessions include the Nebraska Early Learning Guidelines for Social Emotion presented by Sarah Ochoa, Nebraska Early Learning Guidelines for Math presented by Pam Uhl, Safe with You Training presented by Jennifer Baumann and Introduction

The conference features nationally renowned presenter Angela Honscom. Conference participants can receive her book “Balanced and Barefoot: How Unrestricted Outdoor Play Makes for Strong, Confident, and Capable Children,” for a $5 value.

Honscom, from Barrington, New Hampshire, is a pediatric occupational therapist. She has an undergraduate degree in kinesiology and physical development. She also has a master’s degree in occupational therapy. Honscom has treated many children that deal with coordination is-

Hernandez said that 155 students attended last Sunday’s free bowling night which was a huge success. However, only 39 students attended Friday’s “I Hate Winter Week” pool party.

“We are going to have more [free bowling night events], so keep your ear out for when we announce that,” Hernandez said.

As for the pool party, Hernandez said that they will try harder to attract larger crowds in the future.

Lawmaker introduces bill to protect students’ first amendment rights An east Nebraska lawmaker introduced a bill early last week aimed at protecting First Amendment rights of the state’s student journalists.

Calling it the Student Journalism Protection Act, Sen. Adam Morfeld, District 46, Lincoln, introduced LB886 Jan. 8 with the intent of protecting free speech and free expression rights of Nebraska’s high school and college journalism students who participate in school-sponsored media.

According to the Nebraska Legislature website, the bill was referred to the legislature’s Judiciary Committee. Public hearings have not been scheduled as of press time

Student senate is looking to recruit new senators Nalani Stewart News Editor Senate discussed incentives for senators as a method of recruitment.

“We want a full senate,” Konnery Klueber said. “The more people we have, the better.”

Suggestions for incentives for senators included scholarships and class credit.

“We do a lot of work as a Senate. Essentially, we are looking for something to get senators to come, and increase our market of what senators are,” Konnery Klueber said. “If we have a full senate year-round, we can get a lot more things done. This is not something that we want to close up, and say that we want to have a closed society where we are all getting paid money. This is very open and transparent.

This is something rewarding those students for what they are doing.”

Senate currently has a budget of $21, 846.40 in unallocated funds.

“This number will be changing within the next weeks with our spring allocation coming in soon,” Vice President of Finance Lukas Klueber said.

“When tuition is paid, then fees with go up,” Adviser Deena Kennell said.

The court is looking for a new Solicitor General, as well as a new Justice.

CAB hosted a pool party, alongside Project Strive, on Friday to start “I Hate Winter” week, which yielded a turnout of 39 students. CAB split the cost of the pool party with Project Strive which came to a total of $203.38. The total cost of the event came to $406.76.

CAB also hosted a free bowling night on Sunday at Hilltop Lanes, which yielded a turnout of 155 students. The free bowling night came to a total of $1,200.

CAB also elected Stephanie Gardener as new Vice Chair of Public Relations.

“We are doing faculty advising in the Library Learning commons now,” Kennell said. “I think that we have about 10 advisers scheduled right now. The idea of that is for you to have the opportunity to come have scholarly conversations with faculty about your degree or in general.”

NSCS Chancellor announces budget cuts Torri Brumbaugh Managing Editor Nebraska State College System (NSCS) Chancellor Stan Carpenter announced new budget cuts for the state colleges after a meeting with the college presidents, Thursday, Jan. 11.

Carpenter states in an email on Jan. 11 that the cuts are due to state tax receipts falling below projections and loss of tuition revenue due to a decline in enrollment. The NSCS cuts proposed by Governor Pete Ricketts include a two percent cut in state money for the NSCS for the 2017-2018 fiscal year and four percent cut for the 2018-2019 fiscal year.

Along with the proposed cuts, NSCS must make budget cuts to cover the cost of “core needs” without

state assistance. The email states “core needs” of the NSCS include salary and benefit increases, utility cost increases, building opening costs and general operating cost increases.

Budget cuts will be immediately implemented and include cuts to personnel, travel, contractual services, furniture, computer and other equipment/capital purchases, utilities and operating supplies.

In terms of personnel, the search to fill any vacant or new positions will be halted and the positions will not be filled unless deemed “absolutely essential to the core mission of the College.” The President must approve any increase to current budgeted hours for temporary workers, like student workers, and Graduate Assistant employment.

Protect our rights as student journalists Nebraska’s 2018 legislative session opened Jan. 3 facing significant budget concerns that are sure to dominate, rightfully so, the legislative agenda.

But one bill – LB886, the Student Journalism Protection Act – is perhaps equally vital to the future of Nebraska as any financial legislation, and it won’t cost taxpayers one cent.

Introduced Jan. 8 by Sen. Adam Morfeld, District 46, Lincoln, LB886 aims to protect the First Amendment rights of Nebraska’s high school and college journalism students who participate in school-sponsored media. In reality, it protects all students.

For high school students, the bill provides student journalists the same First Amendment protections most American college students and all media professionals enjoy.

That’s nothing new. For 199 years, from when Bill of Rights was adopted in 1789 until the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1988 Hazelwood decision (Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier), high school students enjoyed those protections. And the country survived just fine.

In Hazelwood, the court gave high

school administrators the right to censor school-sponsored student media, unless state legislation prevented it. Colleges were immune to Hazelwood until 2005 when the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, encompassing Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin, rendered its Hosty decision (Hosty v. Carter).

There, the court applied Hazelwood to colleges and universities within the Seventh Circuit only.

In 1989, Iowa adopted legislation similar to Nebraska’s proposed LB886.

Kansas followed in 1992. Over the years other states followed suit, including Colorado and California. Recently North Dakota, 2015; Illinois and Maryland, 2016; Rhodes Island, Vermont and Nevada, 2017.

At the college level LB886 is purely preventative, and important to all, not just journalism students.

It’s intended to ensure that the long history of free press and expression students have enjoyed at Chadron State, and on college campuses across Nebraska, remains intact.

As student journalists, it is important that we continue our education under that freedom as we prepare for the real

world. Without question, we are grateful CSC administrators, now and in the past, have understood and respected our rights. It is vital that all students remain uncensored in thought and expression, but that those expressions be exchanged civilly. It also is important that student journalists continue uncensored to report and comment on stories and issues important to our primary readers – fellow students. But we also must exercise those rights in the highest professional and ethical manner.

It is important to note that the proposed bill also recognizes that we are still students and that we are still being directed down the path of professionalism. The bill does not protect students who publish libelous material; engage in unwarranted invasions of privacy; commit unlawful acts; or “so incites students as to create a clear and present danger of the commission an unlawful act; a violation of institutional policies, or the material and substantial disruption of the orderly operation of such institution.”

By adopting LB886, the legislature will ensure that we all continue to enjoy our First Amendment rights, no matter what the future brings.

Stretch out a hand of kindness

Bright Side Rachel Mitchell Columnist January is such a difficult month for so many people. The holiday season is over, school/work is starting again and unfortunately the weather gets a lot colder. Let’s be honest, January is not the easiest month. After spending time with family and friends we return to our routine of school or work. We battle the cold weather and gloomy days pretty much everyday. This can take a serious toll on a person. Physically, emotionally and mentally it can be extremely difficult for people through this month.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five adults in America experience a mental illness. One-half of all chronic

mental illness begin by the age of 14; three-quarters by the age of 24.

It is so important this month that you stay in touch with your friends and family. They might be suffering silently from depression or a number of other mental health issues.

You might be suffering from issues of your own. Sending a text to a friend and just letting them know that you are here for them is easy and can

mean a lot to them. There is no harm in stretching out a hand of kindness.

This month make plans to hang out with your friends. Invite your friends to go grab coffee and chat for a while. Maybe plan a movie night with your friends. Plan a girls or guys night to just relax and be in good company. Plan a study group with some friends in a coffee shop or at the library. If by chance there’s a sunny day go outside and invite some friends on a walk. These little gestures can make a world of difference in the lives of those around you who might be suffering. Being around people can be so helpful to your friends.

For those of you who are suffering, remember you are not alone.

As hard as it is to remember, your friends, family and faculty care about

your well-being. There is nothing more important than for you to know that you are enough and you are not alone. If you need someone to lend a listening ear, text or call a friend and plan some time together. I know it can be hard to talk about the difficult things you are going through. You are here despite all the things you are going through. You are brave and will get through this.

There are so many resources around us that we can utilize.

Whether you think a friend needs help or if you need help, there is no shame in asking someone for help.

Talk to someone on campus or look at www.nami.org. They have many resources and information for those who want it. If there is one thing that I ask you to take away from this is to simply reach out to others.

Take time for yourself, you won’t regret it Lydia Privett Opinion Editor As the semester is picking up in pace and we’re adjusting to our new schedules, course-loads and getting back in the groove of things, it’s important to take time for your own mental health. It’s important to take time for yourself.

I struggled with this last semester and worked myself nearly to a pulp. I felt emotionally drained and never took time to recharge myself. It began to affect the quality of the work I was turning in.

It’s important to not forget to be kind to yourself and to know that your emotional health affects every aspect of your life, from your social life to your academic and professional life.

Here are a few ideas of how you could work some “you time” into your daily

schedule. One idea is to take a fifteen or thirty-minute walk or run while listening to your favorite music. With the season as it is right now and working out outside not necessarily being an option, taking a trip to your dormitory workout room or the PAC and utilizing the equipment there can even turn into a social event by seeing people you know. Why not turn it in to a social event from the get-go by inviting your friends to

go with?

Not only is the physical activity beneficial, but listening to your music is also healthy and gives you a brain-break, along with seeing some people you know!

Another way to take some time for yourself is to take time to do some pleasure reading or journaling. As an English major, I have found that unless I consciously make time for pleasure reading, it will never happen.

Since I started making time to read a book that I wasn’t assigned, it has helped me take a break from homework every day for the 10 to 15 minutes that it takes me to read a chapter or two, and makes me much more productive in my studies.

Journaling is also a great way to keep yourself from going insane as the semester starts to get into full-swing.

I’m sure you have heard it before; how beneficial journaling can be for your mental health.

Taking fifteen minutes to write out your frustration, about your day, even listing everything you have to do that night, or even about that really cute kid that sits in front of you in your lecture, can make all the difference. It can be soothing to know that your journal is a judgement-free zone where you can write your cares away. By getting it all out on paper, it frees your mind for all of the studying that you have waiting for you.

Being kind to yourself is something that should never be overlooked or pushed aside for another time. Know your limits and learn the value of giving yourself a little “brain-break!”

Find more time to do things that you love and bring you joy! You won’t regret it.

Guest speaker reflects on the impact of Martin Luther Ki Torri Brumbaugh Managing Editor “Over the last three years, we have really seen this country explode,” said speaker Cheryl Brown Henderson as she discussed civil rights and the importance of her father’s ground-breaking case, Brown v. the Board of Education.

Brown Henderson spoke Monday night, in the Ballroom, during CSC’s celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. She was one of many speakers throughout the day to celebrate the event.

Brown v. the Board of Education was the case that “changed the federal position regarding race regulations in the United States of America,” Dr. David Nesheim, interim director of assessment, said as he introduced Brown Henderson.

In 1954, the Supreme Court made the decision over Brown v. the Board of Education to declare state laws that segregate schools to be unconstitutional.

“Brown v. Board was nothing new,” Brown Henderson said. She said that starting in 1879, 11 cases in Kansas, where the case originated, had already been filed. Cases filed in small towns were often successful due to Kansas’ laws on segregation, which gave smaller towns the option to segregate schools and made segregation legal in cities with a population of 15,000 or larger.

Oliver Brown, Brown Henderson’s father, and his family were the tenth family to be added to a thirteen-family class action case in Topeka, Kansas. That case would make its way to the federal level and become a catalyst for the civil rights movement to follow.

Although Brown v. Board was a big step for civil rights, many states did not comply to the decision. The Southern Manifesto was compiled in 1956 in Congress in opposition against the integration discussed in Brown v. the Board of Education. The neglect to follow the decision of Brown v. the Board of Education inspired Martin Luther King Jr. to organize three marches.

The leading men of this game were Jaisean Jackson, junior of Aurora, Colorado, who led the team with 17 points as well as two assists, and Dru Kuxhasuen, sophomore of Scottsbluff, who scored 12 points.

The Griffins scored their second lowest amount of game points this season. Within the last eight minutes of the game, the Griffins made all 10 of their free throws and held the Eagles to just three field goals as they built their lead to 21 points.

The Eagles will be playing seven out of their 11 games left at home starting with Adam State University on Jan. 19th and Fort Lewis College on Jan. 20th.

Women’s basketball attempts to break their losing streak Ashley Jackson Reporter The Chadron State women’s basketball team lost to the Westminster College-Utah Griffins, Saturday, in Salt Lake City. This moves the Eagles to 1-10 in conference and 3-14 overall.

The Eagles came out strong in the first half, going into the locker room ahead 33-32. The second half proved difficult and the Eagles fell to the Griffins 70-53.

Turnovers plagued the Eagles this weekend. The Griffins scored 10 points off of turnovers, while the Eagles scored only seven. According to Head Coach Janet Raymer, the Eagles have struggled with turnovers in the past 10 games.

The Eagles have averaged 19 turnovers per game to their opponents’ 14.

Redshirt sophomore McKenna McClintic, of Burwell, led the team with nine rebounds, two offensive and seven defensive. The team had a total of 39 rebounds for the night.

Senior Kalli Feddersen, of Rawlins, Wyoming led the team in scoring with 17 points. Feddersen made 11 of the team’s 33 points in the first half but struggled in the second, only scoring six points. She ended the night with a 39 shooting percentage, while the team had a 34.4 shooting percentage.

The Eagles made eight out of their 12 attempted free throws Saturday. Feddersen ended the night with six out of eight free throws made. Freshman Brooke Turek of Hemingford, went 50 percent for free throws, making two of her four free throw attempts.

The Eagles return home, Friday, for Girl Scouts Night to take on Adams State University. The Eagles will also be at home for their game against Fort Lewis College, Saturday.

Both games are conference matchups. The Eagles have lost to both Adams State and Fort Lewis College on the road, but are hoping to break their losing streak this weekend.

CSC Track and Field Team hurdles into the new season Kylee Odenbach Reporter The Chadron State College track and field team faced struggles and successes at the Myrle Hanson Memorial Open meet last Friday in Spearfish, South Dakota. The women’s track and field team won the team title at the meet. The Chadron State men finished third in the team standings.

“This was the first competition for the team after Christmas break, and it’s somewhat hard to get back into the groove,” Head Coach Riley Northrup said. “The team competed decently, but not to the extent that they did before break.”

Colorado, won the long jump and the triple jump. Alisha Heelan, junior of Oshkosh, won the 400-meter dash for the team. Ashlyn Hanson, junior of Seward, won the 20-pound weight throwing event for Chadron State. Cory Martens, junior of Newton, Kansas, won the shot put and the 35-pound weight throwing event. Isaac Grimes, freshman of Rancho Verde, California, won the long jump and the triple jump for the team.

“We had nine personal bests in the long distance races at Spearfish,” Northrup said. “I think we will be very competitive this year conference wise.”

Northup hopes to see better marks at the upcoming meet in Brookings, South Dakota, Saturday, at South Dakota State University.

Wrestlers win one, drop two in weekend action Eagles take on Community Night and 2018 UNK Midwest Duals McKenna Jones Reporter The CSC wrestling team fought hard at home and away, coming up with a loss at home, Thursday, and finishing 1-2 in Kearney at the UNK Midwest Duals, Saturday.

The Eagles finished 31-8 against Northern State University, Saturday, in Kearney, and finished 1-2 against the other schools. Wrestlers Chance Karst, 133-pound sophomore of Powell, Wyoming, Jacob Otuafi, 157-pound redshirt sophomore of Sparks, Nevada, and Rulon Taylor, 285-pound redshirt junior of Curtis, all won by pin against Northern State University wrestlers. Karst scored 10 points for the Eagles over the duration of the duals, and Otuafi finished with nine for the team.

Karst won by major decision over Newman University’s Vincent Eremita, 133-pound freshman of Catoosa, Oklahoma. Karst went 2-1 in Kearney.

Brody Lewis, 149-pound freshman of Riverton.

Brock Thumm, 141-pound redshirt junior of Watervliet, Michigan, defeated Northern State’s Griffin Hieb, 149/157-pound freshman of Aberdeen, South Dakota, by major decision, 11-3. Thumm finished 2-1 in the duals, also defeating Newman’s Brandon Conrad, 141-pound freshman of Owasso, Oklahoma.

Heber Shepherd, 184-pound redshirt junior of Spanish Fork, Utah, was the other CSC wrestler to finish 2-1 in Kearney. Shepherd won by decision, 9-3, over Newman’s Nate Panagakis, freshman of De Soto, Kansas. He also won by decision, 3-1, over Fort Hays State’s Martin Verhaeghe, 165-pound redshirt freshman of Bucyrus, Kansas.

Jacob DeSersa, 149-pound sophomore of Hot Springs, South Dakota, and Chase Clasen, 149-pound redshirt junior of Moses Lake, Washington, won in the 149-pound category.

At home, the Eagles faced the Colorado School of Mines, Thursday, winning five of nine matches, but

still finished short of a win, at 20-16. Because of a forfeit at 197-pounds, the Orediggers were able to take the win.

Rulon Taylor started the dual at 285, winning by decision, 8-3 against Weston Hunt, 285-pound freshman of Pueblo West, Colorado.

Thumm won by decision, 3-1, over Taylor Gambill, 141-pound redshirt freshman of Belle Chasse, Louisiana.

Clasen won by decision, 8-5 against 149-pound redshirt freshman of Anchorage, Alaska, Noah Ottum.

The third win in a row against the Orediggers came from Otuafi. He defeated Mines’ Ethan Ruby, 157-pound senior of Treynor, Iowa, by major decision, 13-3.

The final win of the dual was by Devin Stork, 184-pound freshman of Canton, South Dakota. He defeated Mines’ 174-pound redshirt freshman of Broomfield, Colorado, Connor Ventura, by decision, 9-8.

The Eagles will wrestle at home for their next meet during the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night, against New Mexico Highlands, Wednesday, at 6 p.m.

RLA starts school year with week of co-sponsored programs Torri Brumbaugh Managing Editor

RLA kicked off the new semester with “I Hate Winter Week” and plans for growth.

Taylor Osmotherly, RLA’s associate director, said that “I Hate Winter Week” started as an idea from Assistant Director Mariah Nelson, who participated in the event during her undergrad.

“They actually had hot tubs there ... So I called all of the places up in Rapid City to see if they could rent us hot tubs, but they don’t,” Osmotherly said.

Although they could not provide hot tubs, Osmotherly was still excited to build summer-themed programs around already existing events with The Pit and CAB. “I Hate Winter Week” began last Friday with CAB’s Pool Party at the Chadron Aquatic Center.

Saturday’s event was the interactive game show, Thinkfast, from the entertainment agency TjohnE. Osmotherly said, “It was pretty cool and it was a lot of fun to see. [The contestants] had buzzers and

it was all interactive, so they would ask a question and people could ring in their answers.”

Thinkfast included trivia, dance competitions and singing competitions and the winner received a $200 cash prize.

CAB sponsored a Free Bowling Night at Hilltop Lanes on Sunday. “I Hate Winter Week” also included CSC’s campus activities on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Tuesday night, RLA hosted a sledding and cookie bar program to take advantage of the winter weather. A summer giveaway was also held yesterday. The Pit will be holding a Blackout Dance tonight to finish the week’s events.

Along with “I Hate Winter Week,” Osmotherly is looking forward to future RLA events. RLA nearly doubled their program attendance in the past year, and they are hoping to double the numbers this semester too.

One particular program Osmotherly is excited about is the return of the hypnotist that performs during New Student Orientation every fall. The hypnotist will be coming to campus on Feb. 6.

“Runaways” continues Marvel legacy Managing Editor If you haven’t noticed already, superheroes are in.

The big blockbuster movies of 2017 and 2018—like Wonder Woman, the Justice League, Black Panther and Infinity Wars—all seemed to be focused around the classic Marvel and DC heroes we know and love.

I love superhero movies. I mean, who doesn’t love a great, choreographed fight scene? While the box office is eagerly awaiting the new “super” releases, we can’t forget heroic shows that we can view right at home, like Marvel’s “Runaways.”

“Runaways” is a new show that first appeared on Hulu last Nov. I was bored this past weekend and thought I’d give the show a try. A day later, I had finished all ten episodes and was eagerly awaiting more.

I knew nothing about “Runaways” before watching it, but it is definitely not the action-packed, superhero show that I expected.

“Runaways,” based on the comic books by Brian K. Vaughan, is focused around a group of six teenagers in Los Angeles. The group grew up together and became friends because their parents are all billionaires and a

part of a group called “Pride.” While hanging out one night, they sneak into their parents’ secret “Pride” meeting and realize that their parents may actually be the evil villains you see in the movies. The group of teens bands together to unravel what “Pride” actually is and what their parents are up to.

The plot immediately draws you in. You begin the series confused with a lot of questions. As the plot unravels, your questions are answered and you become impatient to piece together the puzzle.

Along with an intriguing and complex plot, the teenagers all have a “power” and skill that helps them in their endeavors to stop their parents. Watching the characters define who they are, discover their talents and come together as a team is fun to watch and inspiring to the teen audience the show is targeted towards.

Throughout the series, you also see the parents’ backstories and how they became involved in “Pride.”

ing and really gives them a human quality.

Not only is the plot great, but the diversity of the cast is amazing. African-Americans, Asian-Americans, and Latinos are all major players in the show. Various languages are also featured.

In an interview, Ariela Barer, who plays Gertrude Yorkes on “Runaways,” discusses how Los Angeles brings together people from many cultures and backgrounds and that it was important to have that representation on the show.

Allegra Acosta Allegra Acosta, who plays Molly Hayes, said, “It is very important to us to have all of these ethnic people who are so powerful.”

Hulu and Marvel brought a unique plot to life and brought multiple cultures to the forefront in “Runaways.” I loved the series and think audiences will feel the same as they begin to relate to the characters and unravel the plot.
