The sessions focused on different topics that dealt with MLK or the Civil Rights Movements. There was also a march from the corner of Third and Main streets to campus before an MLK day program at the Chicoine Center.

The 28th annual Excellence in Early Childhood Conference will be hosted at CSC on Friday, Feb. 17 and Saturday, Feb. 18. The title of this year’s conference is “United We Stand for Children...One and All.” Friday will feature four sessions and Saturday will showcase internationally renowned presenter and author Daniel J. Hodgins.

Cardinal Key will be hosting an American Red Cross blood drive in the Student Center Tuesday and Wednesday. The drive will begin at 10 a.m. both days.

Senate allocated an extra $150 to School of B.E.A.M.S.S. Rangeland Program Coordinator Laure Sinn this week after voting to approve $700 at the Monday, Jan. 9 meeting. The $700 allocation is for an interactive trailer full of games, including Xbox, Wii, and giant Jenga, as entertainment for the high school students who will visit CSC on Scholastic Day. Senate President Katrina Hurley said this week that Sinn contacted her and said she forgot to include fees for the trailer when asking for the allocation last week and would need the extra $150 to cover the entire cost of the trailer.

week. The letter cites “personal and family obligations” as reasons for resigning. Trista Schell, CAB vice-chair of relations, attended the Senate meeting and presented the CAB budget for the semester.

CAB is asking for a total of $16,050 for four movie nights, $8,000; seven small events, $1,050; two large events, $5,000; and $2,000 contingency in case something comes up during the semester. Hurley said the allocation will be discussed at an open forum at 5 p.m. today in the Student Center before Senate votes on the allocation Monday.

The movie night dates are set for Jan. 29, Feb. 12, March 19 and April 23.

Sen. Betel Weldemeskel also resigned saying that a heavy load in graduate school would interfere with Senate.

Hurley noted that senators need to work together to find people who will make Senate a priority and are willing to put in the time. Hurley said that there will be Senate training at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28 at The Hub. Senators will go out to supper after the training event at 6 p.m.

Senators will be reassigned to committees at the training.

The Campus Improvement Committee will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday and the first task is to get new desk chairs in the Student Center. Senate will appoint a chair to the bylaw revision committee at the next meeting. The Health and Wellbeing Committee will meet at 7:15 p.m. every other Tuesday.

Vice President of Finance Lukas Klueber said that Senate has $58,456.33 in unallocated funds and reminded senators that budget packets will be coming out soon.

Student Trustee applications are due Feb. 6.

Current Student Trustee Coy Clark did not travel to the Board meeting this month because of weather but

noted that the Board was going to focus on three things that mainly affect CSC students. Clark said the board planned to discuss the NSCS scholarship information, bookstore contracts, and funds for the CSC track project.

The Board plans to adjust Policy 3400, which deals with the NSCS Trustees’ Scholarships, Governor’s Opportunity Awards, TeamMates Program Awards, and Cooperative Schools scholarships. The revision will make it possible for a student to take a maximum of 18 credit hours with the scholarship.

CSC plans to continue its contract with MBS Direct Corporation as its online bookstore for July 1 through June 30, 2018.

The Board requested to use the Sports Facility Cash Funds from Oct. 1, 2018-Oct. 1, 2019, for the CSC track project, but the Board has to get approval for the funding from the State of Nebraska. The Board plans to receive $300,000 from the State of Nebraska each October and the Board plans to approve projects in advance so the projects can begin as soon as the funds are available in October. The October 2017 funds have been approved for the CSC stadium project and the Board plans to approve the 2018 and 2019 funds for the CSC track project.

At the Senate meeting, Cassie Mitchell, director of student activities and recreation, offered a checklist of what students should do in order to plan and execute an event.

Hurley said her office hours for the semester have changed to 10 a.m.-noon Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays, 2-4 p.m.

Tuesday and Thursdays, and noon-3 p.m. Saturdays.

Chief Justice Samantha Merrill said the court is searching for a solicitor general. The person can be involved in student government but it is not a requirement, and the person will help to navigate through the court procedures.

CAB members select vice chair of programming Former CAB vice chair of relations moves to vice chair of programming, leaving relations position open Melanie Nelson News Editor CAB voted to fill the vice chair of programming spot at the meeting 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Two students were nominated for the position, Vice Chair of Relations Trista Schell and choir representative Kayla Cameron. After giving a short campaign speech, the two candidates left the room. By a show of hands, the CAB members voted in majority for Schell.

The vice chair of relations position is now available.

Cameron was the only person nominated for the job at the meeting. Nominations will be taken until next Tuesday.

Vice Chair of Finance Gavan Archibald reported the total spent from the CAB fund is $48,326.29 and the total remaining is $156,177.94.

Chair Morgan Carrico announced some upcoming events. The next two Free Movie Nights are Jan. 29 and Feb. 12, there will be water pong Feb. 3, and life-size pool Feb. 17.

Schell reported that CAB has asked Senate for the spring budget and urged students to come to the open forum at 5 p.m. tonight in the Student Center, where the budget will be discussed. Senate will vote on the budget at its meeting at 5 p.m. Monday.

Schell also said the student trustee and various senator positions are open.

Adviser Deena Kennell explained that the student trustee is CSC’s representation on the Nebraska State College System’s Board of Trustees.

“It’s a really big deal,” Kennell said. “The kind of per-

son that you’re looking for is going to represent a broad interest of you as a student body.”

Adviser Cassie Mitchell reminded clubs to plan early for events they want to host because there are a lot of components to cover beforehand. She read off a list of elements that must be secured before an event can happen, which she will bring copies of to the next meeting.

Senate President Katrina Hurley announced a general schedule for Spring Daze. The theme will be “Country Western” to coincide with the performer the Spring Daze committee, paired with the Galaxy Series, is bringing in.

The performer will be announced at a later date. April 21 will be a carnival, April 22 is The Big Event, a pool party, and the concert, and April 23 will be the final Free Movie Night. Hurley asked that clubs submit their booth ideas for the carnival to her by Feb. 7.

Sen. Carly Slaght announced that she still needs a CAB representative to join the Campus Improvement Committee, which meets 11 a.m. Thursdays in the Senate office.

MLK Day: A forgotten holiday A

s Americans we celebrate many holidays without knowing the true meaning of the holiday or recognizing the person who is being honored on the day. Such is the case for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. At CSC the day consists of multiple speakers coming in to speak about King and what he stood for and there is even a march from Third Street back to campus. These events are nice and have semi-good turnouts but most of the students are forced to attend because of class requirements. Some people only remember King for his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, but could not really tell you anything else about him.

Who is to blame for the lack of knowledge for a man who did so much for the movement and for the advancement of colored people across the country? Do we blame the educators for not fitting such an important figure into the curriculum? Or do

we blame the parents for not teaching their children? It’s safe to say that King played a major role in helping end segregation but we do not show him or his holiday the respect that they both deserve. We should honor King for being a man who accomplished so much through non-violence, which was one of the biggest principles he tried to teach people.

King was a scholar and academically ahead of his time; he entered college in 1944 as an early admissions student at only 15 years old. King attended Morehouse College in his hometown of Atlanta; graduated at 19 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 1948 and another degree in divinity from Crozer Theological Seminary, Chester, Pennsylvania, in 1951 and a doctorate in theology from Boston University, Boston, in 1955.

due to his unwavering bravery and determination. King was arrested more than 30 times while working to help colored people earn equality. He was thrown into a leadership position after being voted by the local African-American leaders to be the spokesperson for the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

From that point on there was no looking back for King, who was the leader until his assassination in Memphis, Tennessee, April 4, 1968.

This day should be more than just skipping classes to listen to a lecture in the Ballroom or a walk from downtown to campus. This day should be spent learning about a man who put the people first and himself last. We should try to help someone other than ourselves on his day, King wanted people to be treated as equals, so instead of simply listening to a speaker we should focus on treating each other better.

Living the 2nd semester struggle

We are now two weeks into the new semester. We breezed through syllabus week all too quickly, and now we are onto the real dirt and hard work, assignments are piling on, and we might even have a few quizzes and tests coming up soon. That easy class we thought we signed up for might actually be the most time consuming and difficult class of the semester.

Our phones never stop dinging from the constant emails reminding us of all the responsibilities that we hid away for a month while on vacation, and all the hours we signed up for at our part-time job are starting to feel more like a burden than a reward of hard-earned cash.

And all of that just keeps distracting us from all the new seasons and shows coming to Netflix this year.

On Friday, the University of California Davis, Davis hosted an event that Milo Yiannopoulos and Martin Shkreli were scheduled to speak at; however, droves of protestors showed up to their event, and the UC Davis Police Department eventually shut it down as it was deemed unsafe for the two speakers.

Now, I won’t go into detail about my own feelings about the speakers, as they are rather controversial and conservative; but I will say that I am deeply disappointed about the grow-

This “spring” semester isn’t fooling anyone and it could be considered an oxymoron. Spring means sweet, warm, and life-giving, but the fall is the semester that welcomes us with warmer and sweeter weather. The spring semester typically greets us with ice, snow, and bone-shivering temperatures, and no matter where we look, everything is dead.

Some of us might be returning from vacations where we were able to lounge by the pool while getting a suntan, but now we are forced to pile on layer after layer and slide and skate across the icy sidewalks to and from campus (but shout out to the grounds crew for clearing most of the sidewalks on campus).

Because of the holiday break, we are used to resting, relaxing and eating delicious home-cooked meals, but suddenly we are back to stress, back to attempting to stay awake during lectures, and back to eating, let’s just say, not-so-home-cooked meals.

The New Year’s resolutions to be a better student, to stay healthy, and to remain positive are quickly wearing off, which

can be shown by the homework lists getting longer, the candy wrappers pile growing larger, and the angry texting thumbs moving quicker and quicker.

The struggle for sure is real and starting to wear on us already; the responsibilities and the weather are already beginning to bring us down; and we are all riding the struggle bus, but if we take things one day at a time and simply one task at a time, we will get through this struggle.

Man, the struggle is definitely real, but so is chocolate, so life must still be sweet.

Open your minds, don’t be scared to hear opposing opinions ing trend in our country where people refuse to hear opposing views.

An organized protest that still allows for the conduction of an event is absolutely reasonable, and conveys personal feelings about the event; but threatening speakers, throwing things, and creating a place in which only one opinion may be dominant is terroristic. In my opinion, this is a form of brutal censorship.

UC Davis Interim Chancellor Ralph Hexter commented about the cancellation saying, “Our community is founded on principles of respect for all views, even those that we personally find repellent…a university is at its best when it listens to and critically engages opposing views, especially

ones that many of us find upsetting or even offensive.”

I find that I absolutely agree.

The fundamental right we all have to speak our views or perspective allows for us to grow as people; it gives us a spectrum of thoughts and ideas that we can create our own values on.

But when you deprive one person of

that right, you start a chain reaction and endanger your own right. This sort of trend doesn’t only exist in the news, but even in day-to-day interactions.

I am constantly frustrated when people engage in controversial conversation, but only want to hear opinions they’re comfortable with.

Ideologies are controversial in nature in which we should all attempt to push our limits and listen to and understand the thoughts of others.

To do so would allow us to have grand perspective. I’ll end this column with a quote from the famous Tyrion Lannister, “When you tear out a man’s tongue, you are not proving him a liar, you’re only telling the world that you fear what he might say.”

A traveler is someone who goes off-the-beaten-tourist-path to obtain more of an accurate understanding of the culture. Eating at the locals’ favorite restaurants enable you to savor local culture. Learn how to haggle.

Haggling is not always socially acceptable. Most open air markets and some taxi drivers can be bargained with for lower prices. At open-air art markets the asking price is typically doubled what the product is worth. Shopping around is the most crucial part of bargaining. Markets gauged toward tourists have several stalls with the same products. Keys to bargaining prices: pay cash, be patient, don’t show too much enthusiasm for a product, and don’t be afraid to walk away if the price is too high.

Pay attention to customs.

Traveling between countries is exhilarating but can quickly turn terrifying if you’re pulled aside in customs. All customs forms explicitly detail what can be brought in and what needs to be declared to a country. Customs officers are located at country entrances to answer questions. Airports have stream-lined the customs process so all patrons need to do is stay calm and pay attention while passing through customs. Panicking through customs can appear suspicious. Panic potentially makes your time in customs difficult.

Go to the local hang-out.

Every location has its own local hang-out, for example the Malecón in Havana. The Malecón is the sea wall where locals converge on nice evenings. Spending time on the Malecón enables travelers to meet locals and return home with unique stories because a night on the Malecón is never the same. A Travel Column for College Students

Don’t drink the water.

Four hotel room walls are not the exclusive view you want to see on your trip. Drinking the water in some countries can make this a reality. Before you leave for a new country, conduct some research to determine if you can safely drink the water. Travelers are suggested not to drink the water in many Latin and South American countries. If you’re traveling to one of these countries, brush your teeth with bottled water and ask for your beverages with no ice. These two means of water consumption are easy to forget but can have dire consequences for your digestive system.

Remembering the Dream

Chadron State College hosted a full day of events Monday to recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day, including presentations, a march, and Open Mic Night.

Sunday was King’s actual birthday, but the holiday is meant to remember not just the man, but his work and legacy. David Nesheim, interim director of assessment and academic affairs, along with the Diversity Committee and Social Science Club, put together six speakers to give sessions throughout the day, a march, and a MLK program in the Chicoine Center. Nesheim also worked with the Chadron Public Schools to have the elementary and middle school students attend the program.

Nesheim said CSC’s MLK Day agenda has grown considerably since he came here in 2012.

“I was shocked so little was done, so I wanted to make more things happen,” Nesheim said.

He said his plan has been to make the holiday bigger and better each year, and Monday was the fullest day of programming in the six years he has been in Chadron.

CSC alum Jovan Mays, a poet laureate of Aurora, Colorado, kicked off the day with an 8 a.m. session in the Ballroom discussing “American complacency.” Mays graduated from CSC in 2010, and he said during his time here, “there wasn’t a lot of black love.” He has returned to campus to speak each year, attending either MLK Day or Release, because he feels, “racial progress is very important here.”

Mays also participated in the march from Main and Third streets to the Chicoine Center. He read an original poem that he wrote while attending CSC, during the MLK program in the Chicoine Center, and performed another selection of his poetry during the Open Mic Night that evening in the Ballroom.

Four CSC professors spoke at the remaining sessions in the Ballroom. The afternoon kicked off with the march. CSC students, faculty, members of the men’s basketball team, Job Corps students, and Chadron community members, all joined together to march through the streets from downtown to campus, led by a police escort. At Shelton St. they met Chadron elementary students who were released from class to join the trek.

They ended at the Chicoine Center to attend the MLK Day Program. After a welcome from Nesheim and School of B.E.A.M.S.S. Dean Joel Hyer, Mays took the stage. His poem, recited from memory, was about African American’s struggles throughout history and how they were able to overcome adversity and follow MLK’s dream.

sang “We Shall Overcome,” followed by the Cardinal singers, who sang “MLK.” Jay Milburn, sophomore of Chadron High School, opened the song with an a capella solo for the latter group, who were all ninth-12th graders. As his clear voice echoed through the gymnasium, a calm fell over the crowd. Wendy Mahr, the Chadron fifth-12th grade choir instructor, directed both groups.

Keynote speaker Hillary Potter, a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, ended the program with her speech. Her focus was justice, diversity, and education. She spoke about training classes she had recently taken at a prison in Pennsylvania. After three days of intensive work at the prison, Potter found herself “overwhelmed.” She said we all become overwhelmed with our work at times. Anyone going through some sort of struggle will become overwhelmed at some point. But Potter’s lesson was to not let this stop our progress, but rather use this overwhelming feeling to drive us forward in our mission, whatever it may be.

“In our continued fight for justice of all kinds we will be overwhelmed, but we must use that for good,” Potter said. “For the good of ourselves, and of the just healthy lives we want our children in this country and in this world to live.”

After the program, Potter continued her discussion with a session in the Ballroom.

cation to a student he used to mentor in Chadron that has passed away. He said he loves open mic events because it creates a safe space for people to express themselves. He left the crowd urging them to be “advocates for heightened communication.”

The messages each speaker or performer displayed on Monday brought awareness of the ongoing civil injustices in our country. CSC celebrated the work of Martin Luther King Jr. that day, but as the speakers noted, it must be remembered throughout the year for our nation to progress.

CSC celebrates MLK Day with various speakers, sessions Eagle Staff Martin Luther King Jr. Day, while a national holiday, doesn’t seem to be celebrated in a way King would have wanted, according to CSC alum Jovan Mays, the first speaker at CSC’s MLK Day Celebration beginning at 8 a.m. Monday in the Student Center Ballroom.

“What is American complacency?” he asked.

He told the audience to envision themselves in a large room with roughly 100 people. And then he said there was a bomb that went off in this room. There are people directly affected by the bomb while others only feel the blast and those farther from it only hear it.

While he was a freshman at CSC, Mays said he was at a party when someone made a racist comment regarding a new rule in wrestling.

Detonation.

He said there were maybe 50 other people that heard this statement, no one said anything.

The First Amendment guarantees the freedom of speech. But in doing that, it also leaves open the door to not say anything.

Mays said that the country has decided it is up to the person who is being offended to defend themselves, and if they don’t, we all just walk away like nothing happened.

“This is not the same belief Dr. King would have had,” Mays said. “This is why we’re here today for this talk of ‘I Have a Dream?’ Because if this dream is an actual thing…

we have to really start thinking about who we are in these moments of detonation.”

Mays referenced another experience at CSC when there was a racist submission to The Eagle that referred to a friend running for an office.

Detonation.

“It was a very awkward thing. I didn’t know what to do. So I didn’t do anything. That’s American complacency,” Mays said.

“My belief is that, when we’re trying to fight against injustices in our own world, that they don’t have to be the big gigantic injustice that we see, the enormous mountain that we see of things that are happening all around the country. To me, I firmly believe that it happens on these fronts.”

Mays finished his speech with a poem that talked about those bigger injustices. It talked about the police brutality and the racism that African-Americans face even today. The most moving part of this was the passion with which Mays gave this poem. It left the roughly 75 attendees quiet for several moments before their applause.

Communication and Social Sciences Assistant Professor Janice Haynes spoke at 9 a.m. about African-American Independent film. She said there was an entire era of African-American silent films that are rarely taught about or even known about, for being such an instrumental part of American history. Most of these films were made in Chicago, rather than Hollywood, Haynes said.

Haynes referenced “Within Our Gates,” directed by Oscar Micheaux, as one of the most important films. The film shows

what was happening to African-Americans from the black perspective, including controversial topics such as lynching, rape and interracial relationships.

“The bravery and courage it takes to tell that story and then to show it in theaters,” said Haynes. “That’s significant.”

She said we know of the films because there were blackowned newspapers that advertised for the films, as well as oral accounts.

Now, imagine being forced out of the land that your family owned and forced to live in conditions that aren’t suitable for animals. That was the message that David Christensen, Chadron State history professor, presented at the 10 a.m. session.

The speech was about the Lakota Native Americans and the issues they faced in Western Nebraska. Even though Monday was Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the speech showed the parallels and similarities that the Lakota tribe faced at the same time of the Civil Rights Movement.

The conflicts started when the settlers came to Western Nebraska and saw the land and started taking it from the Lakota tribe in various ways, mainly elimination. Years after elimination didn’t work, they made the Lakota tribe live on the outskirts of town and work unskilled jobs like in the beet and potato fields.

Michael Kennedy, CSC communication and social sciences instructor, hosted a discussion and presentation on the impact of photojournalism on civil rights in the late 1900s at 11 a.m. Kennedy showed pictures of significant events that happened during the fight for racial equality in the 1950s and 1960s.

According to Kennedy, one event in particular sparked the Civil Rights Movements of Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and many others. This event was the murder, and open casket funeral of Emmett Till. Till was only 14 years old when he was kidnapped, beat, mutilated, shot, and dumped into the Tallahatchie River, for allegedly flirting with a white woman. Till’s mother wanted an open casket funeral for her son, and JET magazine published pictures, Kennedy said. This event could have sparked the momentous events that followed.

One hundred days after the publishing of the pictures of Till’s body, Rosa Parks was arrested and the Montgomery Bus Boycott began, Kennedy said. Then in 1963 the Birmingham Children’s Crusade, President John F. Kennedy’s Civil Rights Address, and King’s “I Have A Dream” speech all took place, Kennedy said. All this happened because some people realized what was going on was wrong, and a change needed to be enforced.

Shaunda French, CSC associate professor of communications, hosted a showing of the documentary “Prom Night in Mississippi” at noon. Attendees watched parts of the documentary and discussed issues such as segregation and racism that still exist in some high schools and communities today.

According to the documentary, the U.S. Supreme Court ordered all schools to integrate in 1954, but Charleston, Mississippi did not allow black students into their high school until 1970, 16 years later.

It is clear this school/community is a little behind the times with racial equality.

The documentary shows how Morgan Freeman, a Charleston native, wanted to make a change at the high school in Charleston, where there was still a black prom and white prom, in 2008. Freeman offered to provide the funds if there was only one integrated prom in 1997, but was denied. Freeman offered again in 2008 and his offer was accepted; however, an all-white prom was organized by parents and took place as well.

The documentary also questioned what Charleston high school seniors thought of racism in their high school and community. Freeman asked the high school seniors about their separate proms, “If it’s not what you want, why do it?” The students had no reply.

After watching this documentary for a while, a conclusion can be made that the problem is the parents. If parents continue to raise their children with racist pretenses, what will become of our future?

Many children will grow up with the same beliefs as their parents, and the circle of racial discrimination will continue, as we see happening with some of the students in the film.

Children are the future. Like Freeman stated, we can’t survive if we see each other as different, “We are one people.”

At the 3:30 p.m. session of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day events, Hillary Potter continued and adjusted her keynote address to less of the “kindergarten” version. Potter is an associate professor in the department of ethnic studies at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Potter discussed her research notes she’s been gathering from Ferguson, Missouri, since 2014. Her research focused on the unjust nature of unequal imprisonment based on skin color. Potter’s research focused on African-American women, of which 80 percent had been abused or raped by black men, but those women still work to reduce police brutality.

Potter’s research focused around the idea of intersectionality, which is the idea that everyone has multiple identities and those identities cannot be separated.

Relationships don’t have to be fairy tales Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor Once upon a time, there was a typical princess who looked like every other princess that’s ever been.

Once upon a time, everyone is happy and loving life, until some kind of traumatic event occurs. But don’t worry; the wonderful, handsome man will come to the rescue and save the innocent girl. And they all will live happily ever after.

And thus summarizes almost every Disney princess movie to date.

Tuesday evening, Stacy Nadeau, professional speaker, discussed common themes of Disney princess movies, chick-flicks, and romantic comedies with the nine women in attendance. Nadeau explained why it is important for women to critically think about where we get our

ideas about relationships and our ideas about beauty.

Nadeau has been professionally speaking around the country for eight years. Nadeau was picked as one of the real-beauty models for the Dove campaign in 2005. The Dove campaign promoted real women with real curves.

“Dove’s mission was to make more women feel beautiful every day by widening the stereotypical theme of beauty and by inspiring women to take great care of themselves,” according to Nadeau’s website.

The 7 p.m. session focused on relationships in the media and how women, especially, create dream-like fantasies based on movies that can create issues with real-world relationships.

Nadeau explained that the themes created in classic Disney movies are readdressed in the more mature chick-flicks and romantic

comedies that we watch as we grow.

She noted that in all these movies the girl doesn’t do much, she sits around waiting for the male to save her, and when there are mothers, they are typically evil, which eliminates strong female characters.

Women tend to become emotionally invested in the characters of both the Disney movies and the chick-flicks to the point that we criticize our real relationships for not living up to the characters.

“We even get angry at our boyfriends for not treating us like Matthew McConaughey treats Kate,” Nadeau said.

The unrealistic themes and ideas can even be expressed in 30-second television advertisements. Nadeau showed two commercials where the girl had to change something about herself in order to “get him to say hello.”

The girl was again not doing much, except changing herself, and she was sitting around waiting for the man to come to her.

“How often have any of us ever been sitting and staring out a window when some perfect looking guy comes up to us and says, ‘Hey,

your teeth are really white. Will you marry me?’,” Nadeau said. “No! It doesn’t happen.”

After a disclaimer about being an open person, Nadeau explained her life of dating beginning in high school. She went through a series of boyfriends in high school and college that just didn’t work out. Some because of pressures, some because of distance, and a few because of cheating, which eventually led to Nadeau’s “self-esteem taking a hit.”

Nadeau said at one point, she had a timeline.

“Girls, you know what I mean, a timeline,” Nadeau said. “You want certain things to happen by a certain age. Married a year after college, babies by 25, you know.”

Nadeau said she let a bad relationship go on too long because her boyfriend fit perfectly into her timeline and despite her gut telling her no, she stuck with it to follow her timeline.

“One of the hardest things I’ve done to date was let go of that timeline,” Nadeau said.

After a series of failed relationships, Nadeau’s perspective changed and she started to focus on herself.

Her PowerPoint presentation provided a list of things to do in order to focus on oneself.

She said to be a friend, both to yourself and to others. Stop thinking about the negatives about yourself and being judgmental of others and just be a friend.

Make yourself come first. Even when dating, you have to make sure the person you are dating lines up with your morals and values, more than if they line up with your timeline. Don’t lie when dating and never change yourself for someone. Take your time to decide if you like someone.

“No, you don’t always have to know if ‘he’s the one’ after the first date,” Nadeau said.

Demand respect, which also goes along with making sure your morals and values align.

Make yourself proud: stop, drop and roll.

Stop dwelling on past relationships, drop negative, and roll on.

And finally, marry yourself, which means be a partner to yourself and treat yourself right. Be kind and loving to yourself first and it will be easier to invite someone else in to do that when you find the right person.

Nadeau said you have to know right now that you are enough. You have self-worth and you are worth everything you demand.

Her final tip was to find yourself and to grow with a partner. If you find yourself first you will know where you are and where you want to go, so when you find a partner you can grow in that direction together.

“We never stop growing in this world and you don’t need someone to come and fill you up and save you, you are enough right now, just as you are,” Nadeau said.

One notable win included Helmick defeating Cal Baptist’s Nolan Kistler, junior of Riverside, California, who was the 2016 Super Region IV runner-up and who is ranked No. 9 in the NCAA D-II rankings.

Women’s basketball grinds out 4th win of season John Murphy Reporter

The Chadron State College women’s basketball team squeaked out a 79-76 victory in its only game this weekend against the Griffins of Westminster College, Salt Lake City.

After being down by four points early in the first, the Eagles caught fire and never looked back. Hot shooting helped them outscore the Griffins 22-17 in the first quarter and end with an 11-point halftime lead.

“I’m really happy with the way we played our man-toman defense,” Leticia Rodriguez, junior of Chaparral, New Mexico, said. “There were times where we had some lapses but didn’t give up. We continued to work together and trust that we could get the job done.”

Continuing their hot play in the third quarter the Eagles built a lead as big as 19 points before the Griffins caught fire themselves. With defensive stops and hot shooting, the Griffins managed to be down by 10 at the end of the third.

Both teams fought hard down the stretch, making it a barnburner of a game for all fans to enjoy. The Griffins outscored the Eagles 20-13 in the fourth quarter and tightened the Eagle lead to just one, before Kalli Feddersen, junior of Rawlings, Wyoming, hit two game clinching free throws to

seal the three-point victory.

The Griffins shot 46 percent from the field but committed 17 turnovers. The Eagles shot 34 percent from the field despite a season-high 45 percent from long range and only committed 11 turnovers, a season low.

Feddersen led the Eagles on the night with 21 points and seven rebounds, while Rodriguez scored 15 points. Erin Graham, senior of Deland, Florida, and Kylah Collins, redshirt freshman of Waukegan, Illinois, followed closely behind with 14 and 13, respectively.

Five Griffins scored in double figures for the team, led by Aubrie Vale, senior of Burley, Idaho, and Max Shelley, junior of Blackfoot, Idaho, each with 15. Whitni Syrett, senior of Tropic, Utah, scored 14 for the Griffins while Denise Gonzalez, sophomore of South Gate, California, recorded 12 and Sydnee Taylor, junior of Salt Lake City, Utah, accounted for 10.

Friday the Eagles travel to Alamosa, Colorado to take on the Adams State Grizzlies, then play in Durango, Colorado, Saturday against the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks.

“We played both teams about two weeks ago, beat Adams by one and lost to Fort Lewis by six, but I feel like if we keep our composure and trust in each other, then we should be fine,” Rodriguez said. “Any great team can be beaten on any given night and it comes down to who wants it more.”

Men’s team falls to Griffins 76-70 Preston Goehring Sports Editor The men’s basketball team lost a heartbreaker against Westminster College, Salt Lake City, 76-70, in overtime, Friday in the Chicoine Center.

CSC led the entire game, until Westminster’s Mason Smith, junior of American Fork, Utah, hit a clutch 3-pointer with 26 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 68.

On the ensuing possession, the Eagles held the ball for the last shot, eventually the ball ended up with redshirt freshman Vonsinh Sayaloune, of Chadron. Sayaloune fired a deep 3-point attempt as the game clock approached all zeros. The shot rattled on the rim for a brief moment, giving the Eagle faithful hope of another home win, but as the final buzzer sounded, the ball fell away from the hoop, requiring the game to go to overtime.

The Griffins scored the first points of the extra period off a Smith layup. It was the first lead

of the game for Westminster, and the only one that was needed. The Eagles struggled to convert offensive opportunities to points, allowing Westminster to escape Chadron with a win.

Sayaloune shot 6 of 9 from long range, finishing with a team-high 23 points. He also converted on five free throws.

Austin Hall, junior of Aurora, Colorado, and Leigh Saffin, redshirt sophomore of Warrnambool, Australia, were the next best scorers with nine.

The Eagles are on the road this weekend, traveling to Alamosa, Colorado, Friday to play Adams State University, and Durango, Colorado, on Saturday to play Fort Lewis College. Tipoff for both games is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

ASU is currently four places above CSC in the RMAC standings, with a 8-10 overall record, 5-7 in the RMAC. The Skyhawks are ranked second in the conference with a 15-3 overall record, 10-2 in conference play. Colorado School of Mines, Golden, leads the conference with an equal record to Fort Lewis.

Throwers dominate at Myrle Hanson Justine Stone Lifestyles Editor Mel Herl, senior of Eaton, Colorado, led the CSC women’s track and field team throwers in sweeping the first five places in the weight throw competition Saturday at the Myrle Hanson Memorial Open Meet at Black Hills State University, Spearfish, South Dakota.

Herl tossed the weight 21.36 meters for first place, just nine inches short of her nation-leading throw she marked in December 2016. The following CSC women took second, third, fourth, and fifth places, respectively: Ashlyn Hanson, junior of Seward, 15.52; Ashton Hallsted, freshman of Casper, Wyoming, 15.35; Keri Ruff, senior of Eaton, Colorado, 14.82; and Danielle Weyers, freshman of Fremont, 14.56.

Herl also won the shot put with a personal best throw of 14.33. Hallsted earned third with an 11.22-toss.

In the men’s weight throw, Jesse Bleidt, junior of Lewellan, claimed the top spot with a 16.85-throw, followed by Blake Jacobs, junior of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, with a toss of 16.38. In the shot put, Jacobs took first with a 16.31-throw and Cory Martens, redshirt sophomore of Newton, Kansas, grabbed third place with a 14.15-toss.

In the pole vault, Tory Snyder, senior of Pierre, South Dakota, took first with a 3.35-vault and Haley Gallagher, redshirt sophomore of Erie, Colorado, took second, vaulting 3.05.

For the CSC distance runners on the men’s side, Kyle Dietsche, senior of Sheridan, Wyoming, claimed second place in the 800m run with a time of 2 minutes, .83 seconds. Dietsche also crossed the line in 4:29.46 for fourth place in the 1-mile run.

Alejandro Garcia, senior of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, competed unattached but claimed first in the 3000m run in 8:56.85 and second in the 1-mile run in 4:23.81.

For the women, Margaret Vinton, senior of North Platte, took third place in the 1-mile run, crossing the line in 5:31.91 and fifth in the 3000m run in 11:14.12.

Nicky Banzhaf, senior of Chadron, who also competed unattached, earned second place in the 1-mile run in 5:29.51 and fourth in the 3000m run in 11:13.9.

While only a fraction of the team competed last weekend, the majority of the team will compete this weekend at the Jim Emmerich/Alumni Invitational, South Dakota State University, Brookings; the Air Force Invitational, United States Air Force Academy, Colorado; or Dave Little Alumni Mile Meet, Black Hills State University, Spearfish, South Dakota.
