Sen. introduces bill for $21 mil. for renovations at Chadron State Jordyn Hulinsky

Managing Editor Sen. Dan Watermeier, R-District 1, introduced a bill relating to appropriations and specifically appropriate funds to the Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State College System.

Watermeier is the senator for Thurston, Madison, Stanton, Cuming, Burt, Platte, Colfax, Dodge, Washington, Polk, Butler, Saunders, Seward, Lancaster, Cass, and Otoe counties.

When a bill is introduced, it is sent to a committee for public hearings. This bill was sent to the appropriations committee. After the committee passes the bill, the bill will then move to the general file or the

general floor.

If the committee fails the bill it can be killed at committee without going to the general file.

At the general floor, there will be a vote after hearings and discussions, and if passed it will move to the select file. After the select file, it goes to final reading. After passing through the final reading, the bill will move to the governor for signing.

The governor can either pass or veto the bill. If the governor signs the bill, it won’t come into affect until three months after the signing.

The bill is asking for $50,393,089 for renovations and construction at the three state colleges. Chad-

ron State College is looking for $21,281,664 for renovations and an addition to the Math and Science building. The allocation will be $8,425,094 for the 2016-17 school year, $7,405,886 for the 2017-18 school year, and $5,450,684 for the 2018-19 school year.

Peru State is looking for $7,597,837 for renovation and an addition of its Theater/Event Center, and Wayne State College is looking for $21,513,588 for renovations to Benthack Hall and construction of the Applied Technology Center.

The sum of Peru’s and Wayne’s allocations will be split between three school years like CSC’s Math and Science renovations.

Carrico, Grint elected to executive board Justine Stone News Editor CAB representatives voted on the Vice Chair of Records and Vice Chair of Relations positions during Tuesday’s meeting. The nominees for Vice Chair of Records were Morgan Carrico and Analise Garland. Garland respectfully declined her nomination and Carrico was voted in as Vice Chair of Records. The nominees for Vice Chair of Relations were Gavan Archibald and Kalen Grint.

Archibald respectfully declined his nomination and Grint was voted in as Vice Chair of Relations.

At the beginning of the meeting, CAB had spent $4,834.15 and has $665.85 remaining.

CAB allocated $1,500 for Free Bowling Night from 6 – 9 p.m., Saturday.

CAB allocated $2,000 for Free Movie Night on Sunday. The movies that will be played are “The Revenant,” “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi,” and “The Big Short.”

These movies are all R-rated so bring your ID in order to be admitted.

Vice Chair of Finance Molly O’Connell told representatives that budget packets will be handed out in February or March.

The Social Science club will be starting a fundraiser today for Valentine’s Day. They will be taking orders for roses, lollipops, brownies, chocolates, and cookies in the Student Center. The club will be taking orders until three days before Valen-

Student Senate President Katrina Hurley and Senator At Large Tierra Snyder talked to CAB about Spring Days on April 29 and 30. They said they would like to partner with clubs to do booths for the event. There will be live music and activities including bubble soccer, a gerbil wheel, a dunk tank, carnival games, a bouncy castle, putt-putt golf, rock climbing, a mechanical bull, a petting zoo and more all the way from Memorial Hall to the Rangeland Complex. If you would like to be on the planning committee, contact Senate. An open forum for the event is at 3 p.m., tomorrow in the Student Center.

Nebraska Press Women Memorial Scholarship A $750 scholarship is available for graduate or full-time upperclass undergraduate female students who are studying mass communication. The recipient should be in the second half of her second academic year at a Nebraska college or university. Undergraduates must be enrolled in at least 12 credits, and graduates at least nine credits.

To apply, the form is available at nebraskapresswomen.org. One to three samples of applicant’s work are required. A letter explaining the applicant’s achievements and goals and a letter of reference from an adviser or faculty member is required. The deadline for applying is March 18. Darold A. Newblom Foundation Scholarship For the 26th year, a scholarship to support students in Box Butte and Dawes Counties will be awarded in May. To apply, forms can be picked up from Wally A. Nebraska Press Association Foundation Scholarship Four college and high school students will be awarded $2,000 and preference will be to those pursuing newspaper journalism education at a Nebraska university or college. Those eligible are students who graduated from high school and are a full-time student at a Nebraska college or university. Newman finds new house director Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor The Newman House at CSC found a new director of the center.

Riley Stack, native of Chadron, will replace Colby Thomazin as the director of the Newman House, which is located at 907 Main St. Stack graduated in May 2015 from Mount Marty College, Yankton, South Dakota. He majored in secondary math education and is working on a masters from CSC in science and organization management with a sports management specialty.

“I think having a new college graduate will help Newman to be more involved on campus and have a fresh perspective,” Stephanie Steele, 22, senior of Osceola, said.

The Newman House is the Catholic Ministry to the Chadron State College Campus. Most Wednesday nights, a meal and spiritual program is offered. Mass is on the first Wednesday of every month. The meal begins at 5 p.m.

After serving as director for 11 years, Thomazin was not active as the director during the fall 2015 semester due to an illness, Father Timothy Stoner, of Chadron’s St. Patrick Catholic Parish, said. Thomazin died Saturday night in New Orleans at the age of 52 from his long-term disease.

Thomazin, who was originally from Grand Island, will be buried in Gibbon, on Feb. 13. A funeral service in New Orleans was celebrated Tuesday.

“Colby was a big part of why I came to Newman,” Dillon Spies, 22, senior of Grand Island, said. “I hope the new director can do half as well for the new students as Colby did for me.”

The food is so the community won’t have to pay for the barbeque that will be supplied by Dining Services. Any leftover funds will be put back into the account.

to bring Spring Days back to CSC. This will be the same days as Mesmerie Entertainment is on campus. There will be an open forum for Spring Days at 3 p.m., tomorrow in the Student Center.

Hurley said there will be a survey on the website for students to voice which cities they would like the Ride the Bus program to go to for Spring Break.

Hurley also said that green-recycling tubs will be put in the buildings on campus. Senator at large Josh Mayer requested a recycling bin by the computers and printer in the Student Center.

An at large senator position is open. Senators will vote next week. If you are interested in this position, information can be found on csc.edu under Student Senate.

MLK Day isn’t just a day off Some see it as a day off of work and school. A day of relaxation. Others see it as an excuse to complain that they didn’t get the day off. What is the occasion? Martin Luther King Jr. Day. While there are a substantial number of people that spent the day honoring the life and work of the good doctor, there were others that showed a significant amount of disrespect by ignoring the reason for the holiday.

This seems to be a growing problem in this country. We are so concerned with having a holiday so that we can have a day to ourselves that the meaning has been stripped. In fact, it would be an educated guess to assume that many millennials don’t even know why we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The day was set aside by Congress in 1983 to honor the work of one of America’s most influential civil rights activists. The fact that the holiday is almost forgotten is a travesty considering the backward steps that our country is making toward finding racial peace.

A day doesn’t go by that a headline isn’t made about the injustices in America. Whether it is a headline about an officer shooting an African American teen or a headline about only white actors and actresses being nominated for Oscars, we cannot escape it.

With all of the racial tensions around us, we should be even more conscious of a holiday set aside to commemorate the steps that we have taken toward common ground.

Twenty-first century racism is different than the racism that Martin Luther King Jr. fought.

Racism today is disguised by calling immigrants ‘criminals’ and by protecting some of the discriminators by letting them claim that they are being discriminated against.

Racism has gone underground. It used to be violent and public, but now it is subtle and sometimes even unconscious. People with names that sound as if they may be a race other than Caucasian are denied interviews for jobs despite their qualifications.

However, racism is two sided. It is not just Caucasians discriminating against the rest of the world. A white man is ridiculed just as much if he walks into the wrong neighborhood. Invisible boundaries have been set by both sides to prevent true integration.

In order for us to all honor the true work of King, we must strive to reach a place where there is equality and understanding from every side, because as of right now, we are far from the goal we should aspire to.

Think before you take a drink Is drinking alcohol worth setting a bad example?

Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor A little more than two years ago, I wrote an article in The Eagle about drinking. At that time, I was an 18-year-old, freshman college student, who had never tasted alcohol, except for the wine at church, which I don’t count.

This coming weekend, I will be turning 21 years old, legal drinking age, and as of right now, I still haven’t tasted alcohol.

When I was in the sixth grade, I went through a program called All Stars. This program was similar to DARE in many other schools. Its focus was to keep kids away from drugs and alcohol and help them become better citizens. With a presentation we put on for our parents at the completion of the program, each one of my classmates took a turn standing at the podium to make promises to ourselves and our parents about alcohol, drugs, and being good citizens. I remember listening to classmate after classmate promise they would “never use drugs and never drink alcohol,” and thinking they will never keep those promises. I specifically worded my promises to something I could and would keep.

I promised to never use drugs, ever, which I still won’t. (That would need a whole

separate opinion article to explain that decision.) And I promised to never drink unless I was of the legal age, and if and when I did drink, I would do it responsibly.

I’ve watched classmate after classmate change his or her perspective on alcohol and start drinking as we got into high school, or a few waiting until college, thus breaking his or her promise to never drink.

I can only name a handful of people I know who have avoided underage drinking.

I can honestly say it’s not the easiest task in college. Alcohol and the pressure to drink are everywhere. Almost everyone does it and almost everyone thinks it’s needed to have a good time. It makes me incredibly sad.

From the first time I encountered my friends drinking, and experiencing a hangover after, I had zero sympathy. If

you are “suffering” from a hangover, especially when you have responsibilities the next day, it was your own stupid fault. I never have and never will give any easy passes for people who are “suffering” from a hangover.

“You’ll think differently when you wake up with your first hangover,” everyone says.

I can’t believe how many times I’ve heard that from people I know.

But it’s a lie.

I won’t wake up with a hangover. Not on my 21st and not anytime after that.

“Everyone says that until it happens,” everyone says.

It’s three days until I can legally drink, and I still haven’t decided if I will even drink on my 21st. I believe there are so many better ways to spend my time. I believe there are much better decisions I can make with my life rather than focusing all my attention on drinking.

I used to be able to sit and have conversations with my high school and college friends. Now it seems everyone is unable to have a conversation that is longer than 20 minutes without bringing up alcohol.

Alcohol, it seems, is like the center of everyone’s life.

But it shouldn’t be. Anytime I think about my friends drinking and drinking myself, I think of my 17-year-old brother,

I think of the family of six perfect kids I baby sit, I think of three little girls whom I admire, and I think of a three triplets and their older sister. I think of all those kids who I want to make the absolute best decisions with their lives, and I think how unfair it is of me to ask that of them if all I focus on in my life is alcohol.

Those 13 kids along with my little brother are the reason I have avoided drinking thus far in my life and why I won’t allow myself to drink irresponsibly, if I decide to drink.

I would never claim to be perfect and I’m not condemning anyone. I’ve made many mistakes in my life and I hope those kids do better in certain areas of life compared to me. But this is one thing I’ve believed in fully since even before sixth grade.

I said in my article two and a half years ago that I couldn’t convince anyone to never drink again. And that’s never been my goal. I don’t see much wrong with drinking, if you limit yourself and are responsible with your drinking. But that’s the key; you have to be responsible.

There are so many more important things in your life instead of alcohol. Think of the people looking up to you the next time you think you need to get drunk. I guarantee there’s at least one person looking up to you, whether you know it or not.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is an American federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of January every year. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, and the holiday was first observed in 1986, but was officially observed in all 50 states in 2000.

In honor and celebration of MLK Day, five 50-minute panels were presented in the Student Center Ballroom on various topics.

Michael Kennedy, social and communications art instructor, who teaches a photojournalism class was the first presenter. His presentation, titled Photojournalism and Civil Rights, showed students how the Civil Rights Movement in the United States was documented through pictures. Students were shown photos from different parts of the movement, some containing graphic images.

“These images should make you angry,” Kennedy said. “They made me angry when I was putting this (presentation) together.”

Kennedy showed a variety of images that depicted the injustices that African Americans in the United States suffered.

A group of 40 college students and faculty joined a panel of nine students from HIST/SS Seminar in Social Sciences to discuss segregation within schools during the second panel of the day.

Segregation remains a fact in most schools nationwide.

With the basketball season halfover, the Eagles traveled to New Mexico, looking to keep their playoff hopes alive and pick up two much needed road wins against RMAC opponents, New Mexico Highlands University and Western New Mexico University. The Eagles traveled to Las Vegas, New Mexico, first to face off against the New Mexico Highlands University Cowgirls in the first game of a long, tiring weekend for the Eagles.

The Eagles excelled with their regular shots from the field but saw major shooting woes from long range. The Eagles shot a dismal 20 percent from the 3-point line but managed to shoot an impressive 58.6 percent from the field. Maka Daysh, sophomore of Tauranga, New Zealand, led the Eagles in scoring, tallying 29 points in 23 minutes on 12 of 13 shooting from the field. Close behind her was Stephanie Knowles, senior of Colorado Springs, Colorado, who managed to score 28 points in 25 minutes on 12 of 15 shooting from the field and 4 of 5 shooting from the free-throw line. The duo combined for 57 out of the teams total 85 points.

Knowles, who flirted with a tripledouble this game, also managed to lead in assists with eight and rebounds with eight, said that she feels like there is more room for improvement and she isn’t satisfied yet.

“I feel more blessed than anything, God has given me the tools so all of the glory goes to him,” Knowles said.

Defensively, The Eagles got stops early in the game which helped them to build a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter and a 13-point lead at halftime.

Looking to ride the momentum of the win, the Eagles faced off against the Western New Mexico University Mustangs in hopes of pulling a clean sweep of both New Mexico teams and better their chances of making the RMAC playoffs. Offensively, the shooting struggles continued for the Eagles, shooting 36.5 percent from the field and 26.7 percent from the 3-point line.

However, Daysh led all scorers with 22 points, Graham who was second in scoring with 16, and Emma Block senior of Copenhagen, Denmark, who was relatively quiet the night before, managed to chip in 10 points as well.

The trio combined for 48 of the Eagles’ 61 points.

The Eagles only allowed the Mustangs to shoot 33.3 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from the 3-point line in the game and only allowed the Mustangs to shoot five free throws. The Eagles shot a total of 27, which proved to be the difference in the game. Daysh led all rebounders with 20, 12 of which were defensive, and also managed to collect two steals.

The Eagles managed to pull away, thanks to their free throw shooting, winning 61-53.

The Eagles are scheduled to play the Westminister College Griffins and the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks this weekend in Chadron at the Chicoine Center. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., Friday.

Daysh was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts against New Mexico Highlands University and Western New Mexico University. Daysh scored 51 points in the two games and nearly broke the school record for rebounds against WNMU.

10 CSC track athletes excell in Spearfish William McLaughlin Reporter Ten athletes traveled to Black Hills State University this weekend to compete at the Myrle Hanson Memorial Track and Field Meet in Spearfish, South Dakota. Skylar Hoopes, senior pole vaulter of Lusk, Wyoming, led the way by breaking his own indoor school record in the pole vault by two inches.

Hoopes’ old record of 15 feet, 9 inches, stood for a little over a year which he set back in early 2015. Hoopes cleared 15-11 on Friday with relative ease but was not able to clear the next height of 16 feet.

Hoopes owns both the indoor and outdoor records in pole vault. His outdoor record currently stand at 15-11 3/4, which he also set in 2015.

Feral cats cause unseen issues

The women also excelled in the throwing events. Senior Mel Herl, of Eaton, Colorado, competed unattached and placed second in the shot put with a throw of 47-1 1/2. Herl also won the weight throw with a toss of 61-11.

Herl is redshirting this indoor and outdoor season with the hopes of improving her skills for her final season in 2017.

Keri Ruff, junior thrower of Eaton, Colorado, placed third in the weight throw, throwing 51-4 1/4.

The Eagles will send a full squad of athletes to compete at Black Hills State University again Saturday. The Eagles are also expected to send some athletes to the Colorado School Mines, meet which is slated for Friday and Saturday.

If I were to ask you to name some invasive species that pose a significant risk in the United States, what would your answer be? It may be the Asian carp, house mice, or even zebra mussels. Feral cats may not even be an afterthought for many people in this discussion.

Common definition of an invasive species is a plant, fungus, or animal that is not native to a specific location, which can cause damage to the environment, economy, or health. All of following pertain to problems associated with feral cats. Studies from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reveal that anywhere from 1.4 billion to as many as 3.7 billion birds are killed annually by feral cats. That same study concluded that feral cats account for at least 6.9 billion deaths of small mammals. In addition, The United State Herpetoculture Alliance estimated that feral cats have caused the extinction of 33 species of birds in the United State. The U.S. Herpetoculture Al-

New Mexico Highlands University defeated the Eagles, 90-83, and Western New Mexico University beat the Eagles in overtime, 7470. It was WNMU’s first win of the season.

The Cowboys of NMHU are the best team in the RMAC, with a record of 10-7, 9-2 in conference. The Eagles stayed with the Cowboys on offense, but were unable to create defensive stops, especially late in the second half. The Cowboys shot exceptionally well from the field, shooting 55 percent.

Although the team lost, several players managed to score doubledigit points for the Eagles. Sharif Black, sophomore of Detroit, and Warren Gordon, junior of Indianapolis, scored 20 points each.

liance estimates that by 2020, feral cats will have caused 70 species of birds in the United State to become extinct. Feral cats can be a benefit to the environment by killing the abundance of prey species, but the benefits have arguably become too much of a good thing.

Economically, feral cats account for billions of dollars lost. The small amount of control efforts conducted is significantly costly. The additional money used to shelter, feed, and care for cats at animal shelters only helps a small percentage of the species. Furthermore, the cost to euthanize so many animals is steep.

Many organizations support the idea that feral cats can spread diseases to humans.

However, the idea that they pose a significant risk to human health is much debated.

A group of three CSC students conducted a population estimate on feral cats in March 2015 for 10 days. One student, Thomas Linegar, passed the findings of

He also grabbed six boards. Billy Johnson, junior of Cedar Hill, Texas, added 19 points, shooting 41 percent for the game. McCallam led his team in rebounds with 10.

CSC will play at home for the first time since Jan. 2 and 3. The Eagles will face off against Westminster College, Friday, and Colorado Mesa University, Saturday. Tip off for both games is set for 7:30 p.m.

This alone could account for 1,092 birds killed in a year. The group concluded that from those 13 cats, the population growth could reach nearly 85 kittens the next year. Based on that estimate the local bird population will greatly suffer.

The unfortunate part of the problem is there are few solutions. It would cost billions of dollars to eradicate the feral cat population. Even worse, if we eradicate the population they would eventually repopulate. If we simply capture to spay or neuter feral cats they will continue to cause problems to the environment and economy.

Regardless, the need to work for a solution has to be a priority for this country.

The Chadron State Eagle wrestlers started off their 2016 season Thursday by taking down Colorado School of Mines, Golden.

They were able to carry that win to Kearney where they dueled Minot State University, Minot, North Dakota; Newman University, Wichita, Kansas; University of Mary, Bismarck, North Dakota; and Southwest Minnesota State University, Marshall.

CSC now holds a 9-1 record, 1-0 in conference.

It is the best start for the team in recent history.

Chadron State trumped Colorado Mines 32-12, dropping only three matches. Chance Helmick, sophomore of Beatrice, 165-pounds; Caleb Copeland, junior of Bennett, Colorado,

174-pounds; and Cooper Cogdill, redshirt freshman of Chadron, 285-pounds, pinned their opponents in 4:49, 2:41, and 4:31, respectively.

Taylor Summers, junior of Plymouth, 133-pounds, and Terrance McKinney, sophomore of Spokane, Washington, 149-pounds, both earned major decisions against their opponents. Brandon Kile, freshman of Hastings, 125-pounds, and Shane Rodenburg, freshman of Kent City, Michigan, 184-pounds, each posted decisions.

The Chadron State wrestlers kept their momentum through the weekend and swept all four non-conference duals Saturday at the Midwest Duals hosted by the University of Nebraska- Kearney.

In the dual against Newman Universtiy, Chadron prevailed once again winning, 33-12. Summers won by another tech fall followed by a pin in 2:29 from Joshua Miller, sophomore of Bennett, Colorado, 141-pounds, and a pin by McKinney in 1:41.

Helmick held his ground and earned a major decision, followed by decisions from Copeland and Rodenburg. Cogdill won his match by forfeit.

The CSC wrestlers were able to keep up the pace as they began the dual against University of Mary, tallying a final score of 24-13. The Eagles pulled away with three major decisions, three decisions and a win by forfeit.

Although the margin of win was the smallest between Chadron and Southwestern Minnesota State,

Cogdill lost a close decision against Jacob Mitchell, redshirt junior of Portland, Oregon, 4-3. Kile also lost via decision to Adelimo Salazar, redshirt junior of Leadville, Colorado, 6-1. Summers picked up a major decision win over Ruben Lucero, freshman of Greeley, Colorado, 14-0. Miller also picked up a decision over Kyle Fantin, redshirt sophomore of Cave Creek, Arizona, 2-7.

Students become highrollers at Casino Night Sara Tweet Photo Editor CSC Residence Life Association sponsored a Casino Night at 9 p.m., Friday, in the Student Center Ballroom.

With about 50-60 people in attendance, the game tables were filled enough to play many casino games. The students in attendance enjoyed playing games like blackjack and poker. Student workers helped attendees who were not familiar with the games to learn and become more skilled at the tables.

As the night went on, students began bringing their winnings to a table that traded the chip winnings into tickets that students wrote their names on and were able to use these to be put in for a prize drawing.

Every hour, RLA members drew three to four names from the tickets and lucky students won a variety of prizes. Refreshments were also provided for the high-rollers as they played their choice of gambling games.
