Senate chief justice announces resignation Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor Jon Lordino, chief justice, announced his resignation via email to President Dillion Spies and Vice President Taylor Strong prior to the Senate meeting Monday night. Senate will be taking nominations for a new chief justice next week.

“Some things came up and it was time to part ways with Senate,” Lordino said, Monday evening. “I’m going to miss it, but it was time.”

A mistake was made in last week’s minutes. The minutes reported $129,993.25 in unallocated funds.

This number was calculated without subtracting the $25,000 for the pool tables Senate allocated. The minutes were approved with the change stat-

ing $95,993.25 in unallocated funds.

Strong reported the high tables for the Student enter have come in and are in the Student Center now for use. She reminded senators to turn in student trustee applications.

They are due at noon, Feb. 9. The only requirements for this position are to be an undergrad and have three letters of recommendation from CSC staff to go with the application.

Anyone of the student body can apply. The applications can be found at csc.edu/student senate and are due to Kathy Mason’s office on the third floor of Crites. Jacob Rissler, current student trustee, will then set up a committee to recommend three people to Dr. Rhine for selection.

Sarah Townsend, senator of liberal arts, reported that Spike Jordan, opinion editor of The Eagle, asked her to mention that the State of the Union Address was Tuesday night and if anyone was interested in being a part of a twitter conversation about the address to use the #SOTU and mention @eagleopinions.

CAB reported that the PowerPoint in the Student Center has been experiencing some technical difficulties but they think they have the problem solved, and it should be working now. Chelsea Evans, vice chair of programming, also handed out the dates of the Free Movie Nights and Free Bowling Nights. The first movie night is Feb. 8 and the

first bowling night is Feb. 7.

Laure Sinn, coordinator of student activities, thanked everyone who participated in the march for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. She also reminded Senate that she and others on campus are trying to get Jackson Katz from UCLA to come to Chadron State to give a presentation of Title IX. The total cost to bring Katz to campus will be $8,100.

To help pay for the cost to bring Katz and to pay for prizes and Tshirts, Sinn asked Senate to allocate no more than $6,000 Senate approved.

Townsend asked if Sinn was still trying to get teachers to let students out of classes for that time period to make sure the money is being used for something all the students on

campus will have the opportunity to attend. Sinn said she spoke at the faculty meeting last week and is presenting at Faculty Senate this week.

She said she is trying to get it approved to let the students and faculty out of classes for the time block.

Katrina Hurley, senator-at-large, said she is still looking into the video cameras in the dorms.

She is hoping getting new cameras will help with Title IX issues and with laundry being stolen. She is still working on getting a total cost and will report back to Senate when she gets it.

Sinn also said she met with a few students last week about the Health 101 magazine and plans on doing it again this week. She said she would meet at 10:45 a.m., Thursday at the new tables in the Student Center.

Reporter Breann Greer was voted in as an at-large representative at Tuesday’s CAB meeting.

Andy Martin, CAB chair, required CAB representatives to stand during roll call because it was brought to his attention that some clubs are not attending meetings but are having other representatives say “here” for them.

Martin said that this is unfair if a club does not come to meetings but gets more funds than a club that attends every meeting.

Martin also requested representatives interested in joining a committee to discuss new bylaws regarding clubs participation and attendance with the executive board to stay after Tuesday’s meeting.

CAB reported $980.52 in unallocated funds.

Chelsea Evans, vice chair of programming, apologized for the PowerPoint in the Student Center not working due to technical difficulties. The problem should be solved by the end of the week. Former CSC student pleads guilty to drug charges Sarah Townsend News Editor A former CSC student reached a plea agreement Jan. 13 with Dawes County District Court stemming from his August 2014 arrest on a Class III felony drug charge.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m., March 10, for Taquan D. Kelly, 20, of No. 30, 1010 Maple St., Chadron.

Police arrested Kelly, Aug. 21, 2014, at his home located within a mobile home park that is within 1,000 feet of Chadron’s Wilson Park.

He was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver within 1,000 feet of a public institution or park.

Court documents state that, on the

day of his arrest, police noticed the scent of marijuana coming from inside Kelly’s home.

The records also state that, upon investigation officers observed plants, grow lights, hydroponic equipment, fertilizer, watering equipment and fans inside Kelly’s residence.

Following his arrest, Kelly’s bond was set at 10 percent of $50,000.

At a bond hearing on Sept. 17, 2014, Judge Russell W. Harford reduced the bond to 10 percent of $10,000. Kelly posted that bond and was released.

On Dec. 9, 2014, Kelly waived his right to a preliminary hearing which moved the case to the District Court.

On Jan. 13, he pleaded guilty to an amended charge of possession of a controlled substance—more than one pound of marijuana—a Class IV felony.

EDITORIAL–THE EAGLE’S VIEW

You need more than a speech During Tuesday’s State of the Union Address, President Obama mentioned his Italian friend, “Veto.”

That joke was bad and we feel bad for printing it. However, the President did mention the need for the White House and Congress to work together, then shortly thereafter mentioned threats to veto legislation that he doesn’t agree with.

These threats are important to highlight, considering the Republicans won the Senate majority in the November 2014 elections, while the House of Representatives has the largest Republican majority since WWII. The will of the American people was exercised at the polls, whether some like it or not. But the President backed up his threats with a talking point, avowing that he will not be a lame duck.

“I have no more campaigns to run…” said the President, and as the applause began from the Republican majority, he added, “…because I won both of them.”

While the line was touted as a “sick burn” by pundits, it seems to pander more to the smug liberal-elite “bubbleville” personality cult that feeds off Republican contempt; the “culture clash,” that Mike Huckabee failed to encapsulate in his Monday interview with the Daily Show’s Jon Stewart.

But what seemed strange about the speech is how the majority of it seemed to be perfectly packaged and written in blocks; quick tweet worthy quotes that packed a lot of punch, but this perception seemed to be without substance. He spoke well, but it’s going to take more than a snappy speech to keep the country going. We can only hope the President can demonstrate his promises, prove the cynics wrong and work with the Republicans in Congress.

This State of the Union also marked a change in tradition for the GOP. Republican Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa opted not to respond to the speech,and instead chose to outline the priorities of the American people. She did, however, offer a brief civil and non-dismissive acknowledgment of the President’s words, which was a breath of fresh air that broke from years of sore-sport rebuttals.

“Even if we may not always agree, it’s important to hear different points of view in this great country.” Ernst said, “We appreciate the President sharing his.”

Where is the outrage for Nigeria?

Two tragedies have received completely different responses.

ast week a terrible massacre was carried out in Baga, Nigeria. Amnesty International estimates anywhere from hundreds to 2,000 people may have been killed.

Daniel Eyres of Amnesty said images of Doron Baga and Baga show, “devastation of catastrophic proportions in two towns, one of which was almost wiped off the face of the earth”. Survivors describe bodies strewn for three miles surrounding the village. Desperate villagers fled in canoes, only to be ambushed and killed, turning the muddy water red.

No marches were held, no rallies organized, no world leaders vowed solidarity. After all, this was not an attack on “Western” soil. This was not an attack on freedom of speech, This was not an “assault on our values.”

This was not a red-shirt moment. This was plain old butchery. This was a mother murdered as she was giving birth. This was children cut down as they fled into

the bush. This was a death cult playing their favorite tune of mayhem. Yet, we hardly heard it.

When asked about the attack in Baga, a Nigerian Defense official began by offering his condolences to France. He then went on to dispute that a massacre had even occurred in Nigeria. He must have been watching CNN, or maybe Fox News.

Without a doubt, the attack last week in Paris was despicable. There are many brave journalists, but few brave publications. Charlie Hebdo was one such paper. They refused to be cowed by the spectre of evil. Sometimes courage car-

ries a terrible price. Twelve lives paid the bill in Paris. The world responded with the largest outpouring of emotion and support since 9/11. Meanwhile, Baga was merely a footnote. A bloody, 30 second blurb at the end of the newscast.

The mainstream media is not entirely to blame. They feed us what we eat. And our tastes lean toward the familiar. Nigeria is so far away, so foreign. But terrorists attacking the freedom of the press, that hits home. Black clad men storming an office strikes fear in the heart of Americans. A rag-tag bunch of murderous extremists in a desolate country, led by a crazed zealot on a power trip, how could that ever effect us at home?

Perhaps it was just bad timing, with everything going on in the world, it would have taken Ebola to get airtime for Baga, not some run of the mill African massacre. “Black Lives Matter” has been a popular slogan lately, don’t African Lives Matter? Don’t human lives matter? How many lives does it take to earn a hashtag? Or, is it not the number of lives, but rather where those lives were lived that matters?

Technology does not define us The “kids these days” aren’t making a digital mistake.

ver the break, The Hallmark Channel was having a Hart to Hart marathon that I found myself watching because, let’s face it, Jonathan Hart was a dreamy, selfmade millionaire and what’s not to love?

Plus, who doesn’t like a good early 80s murder mystery show?

There was a scene in a select episode where the butler, Max, was on a date in the park and a kid rode by Max and his date on a bicycle. What the butler said next confused me and honestly it made me chuckle a bit. It was something along the lines of, “Kids these days don’t know how to slow down and take a walk. They always have to be moving faster and riding somewhere. That’s the problem with this generation.”

That line got me thinking that “the problem with this generation” is a saying old as time. The line was said in the early 80s, it was said before then, and it will continue to be said. It seems that older

generations are constantly looking for a reason to reprimand the younger for the advancements the world is making.

We hear it all the time, how this generation can’t put down their cellphones, or how we rely too much on technology.

We can all agree that we spend copious amounts of time on our phones and the majority of our work is done on computers or tablets, but is it really as bad as it seems?

Technology is constantly advancing and it will continue to do so, so why shouldn’t we relish in the technological world of right now? We should take

advantage of everything that consumes this generation. There shouldn’t be a problem taking Snapchats in public, or posting selfies on Instagram, and taking those “What kind of dog suits you?” quizzes on Facebook.

These elements are unique to this very day so seek enjoyment in the commodities that we have in this decade. Our grandparents had their social trends and our parents had theirs. Why should we be chastised for ours? Grandparents enjoyed their sock-hops and poodle skirts, and our parents enjoyed their 8-tracks and mullets. The trends of right now are ones we will tell future generations about and they will laugh and ask how we ever survived without hoverboards and holographic telephones.

As long as these technological advances don’t hinder one’s ability to communicate acceptably in society, I don’t see the “problem with our generation.”

If we move past the negative ideas associated with technology, we can be the ones who are going to use it to do and discover miraculous things.

Defining the box-office propaganda film Spike Jordan Opinion Editor

A

merican Sniper has seen one of the most successful box-office opens in history. The Clint Eastwood directed film starring Bradley Cooper as Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle, grossed over $90 million on a special fourday screening over the holidays; an unheard of feat. It has already been nominated for a slew of Academy Awards, but has also invited controversy.

But if you are expecting a hot-take condemning Michael Moore’s twitter comments on Monday calling snipers “cowards,” you’ll have to read else-where. Moore backed off his statements, saying that they weren’t in regards to the film; however, the timing of his remarks seemed a little more than coincidental.

But if there’s anything recent Hollywood trends show, it’s that nothing fuels a butthurt conservative’s resolve more than some liberal pantywaist passive-aggressively complaining about a movie. The thought is that you can defeat liberals and show how patriotic you are by purchasing a ticket; an act which is pure slacktivism.

But what I really found interesting was how Seth Rogen took a jab at the movie, comparing it to Nazi Propaganda. Rogen’s remarks seemed peculiar to me, given that Sony paid him $8.3 million to star in and direct “The Interview,” an action-comedy that sparked both a cyber attack from North Korea, as well as generating national security concerns. Added to those facts were the waves of conservative freedom-loving people who were gunning to see Rogen’s stupid movie, (by far one of the dumbest movies I’ve seen), where he and James Franco assassinate a man for laughs.

The act of going to a movie theater as a political statement is the definition of propaganda. When did purchasing a movie ticket become a proxy for patriotism and free speech? These faux-conflicts are created then capitalized on, with the end goal being to get your ass into a movie seat and generate profits for Hollywood.

But I think the great thing about Twitter is that everyone has a soap-box and can step up and make an ass of themselves in the public eye. You have the right to be offended, and you have the right to offend. It’s the perfect medium for it, and the whole news industry has come to capitalize on 140 characters of unbridled idiocy.

Liberals are not the only ones to blame; tweets from conservative politicians are constantly captured and compiled into listicles by bloggers at liberal websites like “Addicting Info,” (a misnomer I assure you; the site is neither addictive, nor contains any actual information). This ravenous culture of talking points and twitter-flubs is making us dumber, and I’m probably contributing to that culture, for which I’m sorry.

But for all of the attention paid to twitter, there is a double edge sword. The fringes and the far right made a number of stupid remarks that completely missed the point about American Sniper.

Countless people tweeted about how the

movie inspired them to want to “go and kill Arabs.” Besides being offensive, disgusting, and racist; the mentality flattens the conflict and does a disservice to myself and my fellow Veterans. I watched the film, and it didn’t give me any sense of nostalgia for war.

I’m not gunning to go back and “kill Arabs.”

But for some folks, the response to the film is “hero worship,” and that’s where Eastwood went wrong. Calling someone a hero, to me, is as hollow and banal as saying “thank you for your service.”

Kyle was a patriot who loved his country and he would have done anything to defend it. He watched over the lives of countless Marines and soldiers and made sure that they returned home to their families. He did kill a lot of people, but that is what he was trained to do. He did his job and I cannot discredit that.

In fact, one of the articles I’ve read talked about how Kyle referred to the insurgency as “savages.” They were trying to destroy Kyle’s credibility by highlighting that remark, but in my observation and experience, he was only calling a spade a spade.

If you look at the brutal beheadings and executions perpetrated by ISIS in the recent months, it would be hard to say those actions are anything other than savagery. I suspend judgment on that point alone, because if you witness atrocities, you have to build some sort of barrier to keep your sanity; to dehumanize your enemy to some extent is to be expected with any conflict. War is never going to be as clean cut and sanitized as the civilians, who aren’t fighting it, would like.

I love my country, and that’s why I sacrificed five years of my life to defend it. But I hate most of the movies that have come out about war during my generation. What we get are these stale quasi-patriotic prowar movies, rather than a portrait of what

actually happens in war. Films like Stanley Kubrick’s “Full Metal Jacket,” and the HBO series “Generation Kill,” more accurately depict what war like versus “The Hurt Locker,” “Lone Survivor,” or any of the other shallow bullshit Hollywood has pumped out in recent years.

American Sniper does disservice in a couple of areas. While there was a brief exposition when one of Kyle’s buddies questioned the war, Eastwood paved over this dialog in a way that was reminiscent of the flower shop scene in Tommy Wisseau’s “The Room.” To paraphrase: Kyle’s buddy says, “I don’t feel like we are doing anything here.” Kyle says, “But we ARE doing something here,” to which Kyle’s buddy responds “You’re right!”

I found that to be a shallow plot device and it was annoying and unnecessary.

While the portrayal of PTSD was well done, other points, such as when Kyle echoes a Ted Nugent aphorism, “America is not at war, the military is at war. America is at the mall,” were interrupted, and they felt forced. Good points were sacrificed in order to make a movie that made the audience feel warm and fuzzy about war, which doesn’t bode well for our future.

During the State of the Union address on Tuesday, President Obama mentioned that he was going to ask Congress to declare war on ISIS. I’m not going to get on my high-horse and be condescending, but you know what’s more patriotic than watching a movie? Serving your country. For everyone masturbating to American Sniper and itching for an opportunity to “shoot bad guys,” you just might have your chance.

There was a special open mic event Sunday night in the Student Center Ballroom in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Snacks and beverages were offered for everyone. The event was organized by Gavan Archibald, RD of Kent Hall. Students were encouraged to show off their talent and creativity, whether in song or allowing the audience to vibe with them through poetry. They did not disappoint, and the night was a success. Many students showed up, and a good number of them showcased their talents.

MLK day started early with a crowded and stuffy Student Center Ballroom for four faculty and student panel presentations. The first panel presentation was by David Nesheim, social and communication arts assistant professor. He showed clips from “Slavery By Another Name,” a movie from the book by Douglass Blackman, while also adding comments and engaging the audience to express their opinions or thoughts about the video.

The video focused on slavery and the different ways it was still occurring in other terms after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

Nesheim showed the movie in some of his classes and used portions of it to make connections as to how discrimination is still around although many believe it died with the Emancipation Proclamation.

A second panel consisting of Social and Communication Arts Associate Professor and Department Chair Robert Knight, Social and Communication Arts Assistant Professor Shaunda French, and English and Humanities Professor and Department Chair Matthew Evertson, was focused on civic engagement.

French engaged the audience by asking how many terms and citations people thought showed on a web search when looking up the term “civic engagement.” Guesses from 20 to a few million were suggested, but the answer was 383,000. The three faculty members continued by asking what audience members considered to be civic engagement and what the difference, if any, is between that and community service.

A quote from King’s “Letter From a Birmingham Jail” was used to pursue the topic of engaging in civic activities. “…We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality…whatever effects one directly, effects all indirectly…”

Each professor asked a student of theirs to speak on how they engaged in civic activities and share their experiences with the audience.

The third panel focused on King’s “Letter From a Birmingham Jail” with students from English and Humanities Professor Katherine Bahr’s Composition II class presenting. Each student or pair focused on a section of the letter and explained how it is still relevant.

After each shared their portion of the letter, different faculty and staff from the audience expressed what they remembered from the Civil Rights Movement or related events.

The last panel brought Nesheim back along side Thomas Smith, social and communication arts associate professor, to discuss the book, “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Color blindness” by Michelle Alexander. Smith shared Alexander’s thoughts. Both Smith and Nesheim went back and forth providing the audience with a compelling panel and raised questions on different topics.

Following the panels at 1:30 p.m., members from Job Corp, Chadron State College students, faculty and staff members joined together at the corner of Main and Third streets to begin a march.

During the march those involved listened to King’s “Drum Major Instinct” speech, which King delivered Feb. 4, 1968, at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. The march went to the Student Center where those who joined could enjoy refreshments.

Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor We all know the story of Martin Luther King Jr. We learned in high school he was a civil rights activist who believed in nonviolent fighting. He gave many famous speeches and was assassinated in 1968. We have heard the history of King.

So one might think the movie “Selma” might be a boring movie about a man we already know and a story we’ve seen played out a million times. But what “Selma” does is show you the inside angle of what was really going on in the time of King.

The movie opens with a black screen and only a single voice saying, “This isn’t right.” The voice comes from David Oyelowo, who plays King, talking about the ascot he is wearing. As the movie progresses, we watch the struggles King encounters leading up to the march from Selma, Alabama, to Montgomery, Alabama. Leading up to the march, we see the hardships and restrictions King has to deal with in preparation. King is seen multiple times talking to President Lyndon Johnson, played by Tom Wilkinson. Johnson is refusing to sign and pass a law making it illegal to discriminate at the voting booth. By this time the Civil Rights Act, which made segregation illegal, has already been passed. Johnson now wants to move on to the Poverty War, but King is pleading with the President to focus on the voting first.

The way King plans to convince Johnson that this issue needs to be dealt with is by stuffing it in his face. He plans to use the media to attract the American citizen’s attention to the issue at hand. King organizes a march from Selma, Alabama, to Montgomery, Alabama, to expose the struggle.

We also experience the battle King has with his wife, played by Carmen Ejogo, and his kids. I wasn’t aware of the strain King’s work put on his family life, but it’s laid out there for you to see that King was fighting more than one battle during

this time.

Women’s team wins 1 game in overtime Christopher Smith Reporter Chadron State women’s basketball team split this weekend defeating New Mexico Highlands University and falling to Western New Mexico University on the road.

Friday the Eagles faced New Mexico Highlands University Cowgirls defeating them in a thrilling overtime victory. Outscoring the Cowgirls, 13-8, in the overtime to pull out the victory.

The Eagles trailed early by as many as 16 points before the first media time-out. They then went on a 28-14 run to cut the Cowgirls lead down to four at the half.

In the second half, CSC was down 12 points before a stunning comeback and forcing overtime, outscoring the Cowgirls, 38-34, second half.

Junior Allegria Chisom, of Witchita, Kansas, led the Eagles scoring 25 points shooting 10 of 13 from the field.

She scored 18 of her 25 in the games final 10 minutes to help lift the Eagles to victory.

Junior Stephanie Knowles, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and freshman Kayla Mathews, of Adelaide, South Australia, chipped in 13 point each.

The next day the CSC women traveled to Western New Mexico University playing the Mustangs, a tough road oppo-

nent, and fell short of a victory.

The Mustangs jumped out to an early 13-4 lead against the Eagles in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Eagles cut the deficit to as little as two points with 43 seconds to go in the first half. In the second half, the Mustangs came out early going on a 23-10 run, extending their lead to as much as 17.

Chisom led the Eagles once again scoring 10 points, shooting 50 percent from the field, six rebounds and three blocks.

Junior Emma Block, of Copenhagen, Denmark, scored nine points from the field.

The Eagles’ defensive put up a strong showing in the loss holding the Mustangs under 40 percent shooting from the field.

Chadron State hosts CSUPueblo Friday and the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Saturday. Both games tip off at 5:30 p.m.

Three Eagles were named to the RMAC All-Academic basketball team Wednesday: Hattie Guzman, junior of Scottsbluff; Havannah Newens, sophomore of Mitchell; and Kate Simonton, senior of Bakersfield, California.

To be named to the team, athletes must maintain a 3.3 GPA, be a starter or reserve, and have completed two consecutive semesters or three quarters at their school.

Eagles win 2 duals, 3 wrestlers receive regional honors Janelle Kesterson Lifestyles Editor It was a kiss-your-sister week for the Chadron State College wrestlers after a busy week of duals with a near split of 2-3 pushed the season record to 6-6. The Eagles posted a 4-3 dual record prior to the holidays.

The Eagles expected stiff competition going into this week’s duals. They dropped the first dual 24-12 against Colorado Mesa University, Grand Junction, on home turf.

The Eagles then traveled to Kearney where they thumped the University of Mary Marauders, of Bismarck, North Dako-

ta, 33-9. However, the CSC wrestlers were unable to carry that win through to the next dual, the San Francisco State University wrestlers beat CSC, 7-26.

They came back in the dual against Newman University, Wichita, Kansas, and ousted them 34-9. CSC wrestlers then fell to Fort Hays State University, Kansas, in a close dual 18-26.

The matches with Mesa and San Francisco opened CSC’s RMAC schedule for this season. The Eagles posted a 4-3 dual record prior to the holidays.

Three Eagle wrestlers are ranked regionally. They are Jacob Anderson, sophomore of Central City, No. 5, at 149-pounds with a season record of 14-5; Caleb Copeland, sophomore of Bennett, Colorado, No. 7, at 174-pounds holding a season re-

cord of 12-7; and Devan Fors, senior of Roseburg, Oregon, No. 4, at 197-pounds with a season record of 13-14.

“I thought we wrestled good in some spots, but we still need to continue to get better in certain positions,” Head Coach Brett Hunter said. “The next two duals at home are going to be very challenging for our young lineup, but we are excited about the test.”

Friday the Eagles will compete against Colorado State University-Pueblo at the NPAC. Coach Hunter wanted to remind fans that Friday is blackout night, so make sure to wear black.

The Eagles will compete against the Western State Colorado University Wolves of Gunnison, Jan. 31 at the Chicoine Events Center.

Coaches corner will be on campus once a month The new Chicoine Events Center will be put to use for more than just sporting events.

The Eagle Booster club will use the events center once a month for its weekly Coaches Corner. The first Coaches Corner on campus was Monday.

Coaches Corner is an opportunity for the coaches of all the in-season sports teams to talk about their teams and the upcoming activities of the teams.

New Mexico Highlands University took an early lead against Chadron State, giving them momentum to defeat the Eagles in a tight game, 98-95, Friday.

The Eagles battled back from a 12-point deficit to tie the game at 41 going into the half. Sharif Black, freshman guard from Detroit, scored nine points in the first half to help bring the Eagles back. Junior guard Kendrick Nichols, of Chicago, led the Cowboys with 13 points in the opening half.

In the opening minutes of the second half, the Cowboys pushed to a quick 10 point lead. The Eagles came storming back, going on a 28-9 run, giving them the lead for the first time.

For the remainder of the game, both teams went back and forth. In the final minute of the game, Highlands took a three point lead off an and-one and a quick transition dunk. Junior

forward Roderick Butler, of Detroit, sunk a tying 3-pointer with 20 seconds left. On the following possession, Jonathan Mines, junior guard for the Cowboys of Brisbane, Australia, hit a game winning three with one second remaining.

Christopher Smith, senior guard of Pasadena, California, led the Eagles with 19 points. Butler and Kendrick Holliman, senior forward of Spanish Fort, Alabama, both finished with 16. Senior guard Evan Brooks, of Ontario, California, ended with 15. Black closed the night with 11.

The Eagles dropped another heartbreaker against Western New Mexico University, 78-76, Saturday. There were 10 lead changes and nine ties in the game.

The game was another hard fought battle, neither team able to extend a substantial lead. The Mustangs largest lead was seven. Chadron State’s was only three. The Eagles were outscored in the paint, 38-30, and points

off turnovers, 18-13.

Brooks hit a three with 13 seconds left in the game, cutting the lead to one in the final minute of another exciting game. Both teams then hit two free throws, keeping the margin the same. On the last possession, Brooks came up just short on the game winning three. He led the Eagles with 22 points.

Holliman added 14 along with six rebounds. Butler and Black both finished with 12.

The Eagles tip off against CSUPueblo at 7:30 p.m., Friday at the Chicoine Events Center.

Sheldon Museum of Art’s show explores views of nature Hannah Clark Web Editor Old meets new in Memorial Hall’s newest Main Gallery art show, an exploration of a timeless force on the human landscape: nature. On tour from UNL’s Sheldon Museum of Art, the show, titled “Depicting Nature, From Scientific to the Sublime,” features 16 works which “explore the various ways that artists explore nature.”

Professional programs aren’t the only luxury which the Sheldon brought to Chadron. The natural explorations which line the gallery walls come from all walks of America, including German and Japanese-born artists. Educational information hangs besides each piece, which surpasses the usual “name, title, and medium” placards of other shows. The Sheldon cards describe the work, artist, and the cultural atmosphere that produced the piece, making the show a mental and visual pleasure. CSC’s gallery team always works to present meaningful shows, and every time the college host’s a Sheldon show, the results are always worth seeing.

It is humbling to live in a natural landscape like Chadron and see a show with generations of nature-devoted art. The works span 141 years of natural contemplation, and range from pastoral oil paintings to abstract amoeba outlines. One piece, a minimalist print by Harry Callahan, is entitled “Grasses in the Snow: Detroit.” In 1943, Callahan scattered this piece’s white background with long black lines, which fade into gray like the wintery grass they’re named after. Nearby, a perfectly-detailed photo of a snowflake reflects how Doug and Mike Starn saw the same subject as Callahan, 67 years later.

The techniques vary too. A chromolithograph, the process of chemically printing images popular in the 1800s, hangs next to a misty photograph from 2007. The common thread hold-

Staying true to the band name, the songs are poetic in nature with melancholic undertones that make it worth a listen.

“Daze,” the album’s first song, sets the basis of the album: moving away from the old. This album has a softer sound than its predecessors, and also features more contribution from the keyboard than previous albums. This song is currently the only single released from this album. The album also marked the band’s first venture onto Spotify, a popular music streaming service. In order to create publicity, Poets of the Fall provided each of their albums weekly on Spotify up until the release of “Jealous Gods.”

My favorite song on the album is by far the title track, “Jealous Gods,” the second song on the album. If you choose to only listen to one song of this album, make it this one. Its message is rooted in appreciating what’s around us because it is perfect despite flaws, including ourselves. The band asks if “arcs of soaring rainbows” and “the strength of mother Earth” can fill our hearts, or if we remain jealous gods. The song also embraces our ability to grow together as people.

The song strongly features piano against a simple drum beat and soft guitars, against the positive lyrics. Like the rest of

the album outside of “Brighter than the Sun” and “Daze,” “Jealous Gods” maintains a melancholic tone in contrast to its positive messages.

Another stand-out song on the album is “Rebirth,” which describes the lengths to which the singer would go for the subject. This song is the one of the slowest on the album, and primarily features a mix of keyboard and acoustic guitar to complement Saarestos’ tenor vocals. The sweet, yet mournful tone of the song makes it beautiful and offers a message of dedication and love to listeners.

The final song of the album, “Nothing Stays the Same,” alludes to the message of growth, ending the album with a soft song that builds into a guitar solo before fading again. Lyrics such as “when sorrow calls my name, I know nothing stays the same,” contrasts with the upbeat message featured in “Daze,” where the singer appears to be excited to move away from the old rather than melancholic. However, the song still encourages listeners to keep going, despite all hardships, because the singer still has an “angel” in his life.

Life can be difficult and dreary, but there will always be someone who cares and will aid your growth into strength and better times. Poets of the Fall reminds us that, while nothing stays the same, we are not alone. Love never goes out of season.
