Senate approves CAB funds, hears Big Event budget Kathryn Sullivan Reporter Senate President Jacob Rissler opened the meeting Monday by requesting that the senate refuse to accept Senate Treasurer Ashley Swanson’s resignation (see Senate votes to reject Treasurer’s resignation).

Swanson reported that the Student Activity Fee Account balance is $148,614, and senate approved the $7,600 allocation for CAB’s third quarter budget. $2,600 of the CAB allocation will go toward paying for Fred Whitfield, eight-time Tie-down Roping world Champion, to

present his “Gold Buckles Don’t Lie” program. $1,500 will go toward Free Bowling Night, $1,300 will go toward Blue Key’s Dodgeball Tournament and Brain Bowl, and $400 will go toward the Women’s Rugby Team to pay for its registration fee for the March Madness tournament.

Cheyenne Deering and Sam Parker submitted a $10,000 itemized budget on behalf of The Big Event, which included advertising, food, t-shirts, and a small miscellaneous fund.

Parker said they are expecting at least 600 volunteers from campus, 200 more than last year’s attendance. Senate tabled the discussion for one week and will vote on the allocation during its next meeting.

Senator at Large Chealsea Lukasiewicz resigned from her post on Senate due to conflicts with her class schedule.

CAB elected its three representatives for the Activity Fee Board subcommittee by email vote. Three members submitted applications. 24 votes were required to constitute a quorum, and CAB received 29 "yes" votes from representatives according to CAB chair Lane Swedeberg.

The representatives are Stephanie Steele, Newman House representative and sophomore of Osceola; Kelsey Empfield, Sigma Tau Delta representative and junior of Scottsbluff; and Kelly McNabb, Inernational Club representative and junior of Rapid City, S.D.

PR students, adviser head to Texas for The Big Event Instructor French and three students to present CSC's The Big Event success at Texas A&M Conference

Three Chadron State College students will represent Chadron State College this month at The Big Event Conference on the campus where the tradition began, Texas A&M in College Station, Texas, Jan. 31Feb.1.

Last year, two of these CSC students attended the conference as participants and this year they are returning as major presenters.

“Establishing an Eagle Tradition: CSC's The Big Event.”

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to travel to Texas A&M. It will be my first time attending the conference and I can’t wait to show what we have done and will do with The Big Event here at Chadron State College,” said Cheyenne Deering.

The Big Event is a student-led community service project that focuses on serving Chadron and surrounding areas as an expression of thanks for their continual support

of CSC throughout the years.

It was founded at Texas A&M University in 1982. Since then it has spread to over 75 additional colleges nationwide and internationally. In Texas A&M University’s mission statement, The Big Event is described as a day to come together, express gratitude and give back to the community.

On Monday, in a presentation about the need for and value of volunteerism in the Chadron area, Rachel Johnson suggested that CSC

students consider becoming involved either as an organizer or a worker in The Big Event this year.

Johnson, the coordinator of senior volunteer services with the Northwest Community Action Partnership based in Chadron, spoke to about 200 CSC and Pine Ridge Job Corps students, faculty and staff as part of the Diversity Committee’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day recognition.

Justy Bullington said, “I am so thankful to go back to The Big Event

conference this year. It was a great conference that put the importance of civic engagement and community service into perspective and it is an honor to be a main presenter at this year’s conference.”

Senate votes to reject Treasurer's resignation Spike Jordan Co-Managing Editor Student Senate, in a nine-six roll-call vote Monday, rejected Senate Treasurer Ashley Swanson’s resignation, which she tendered last week under pressure from Senate President Jacob Rissler and Senate Vice-President Nate Jones.

Rissler read a prepared statement to the Senate Body.

“It has come to my attention that I lack the constitutional foundation to call for Ms. Swanson’s resignation,” Rissler said, “therefore; in order to rectify the procedure, I hereby recommend that Senate refuse to accept Ms. Swanson’s resignation from Monday, Jan. 20’s meeting.”

During the discussion, that followed, Andrews Senator Taylor Strong, sophomore of Gering, asked Swanson why she did not speak up during last Monday’s meeting.

“I don’t have an answer for that.” Swanson

Jon Hansen, interim vice president of marketing and enrollment, summoned the executive officers and asked them to explain the situation further.

“It was obvious to me that it wasn’t within Jacob’s purview or authority to ask for that resignation.” Hansen said Tuesday.

Hansen said that he directed the executive board and their advisers to work together to find a resolution.

“There was obviously no way to go back and

undo completely what was done, but it could be made right.” Hansen said.

Hansen said the decision to step down was Swanson’s, and that if she were to finish out her term, it would send a message.

“There’s no conflict of interest between being in one particular organization and sitting on that committee,” Hansen said.

Hansen said that the concerns with conflict of interest were perceived on Rissler’s part, and that “all parties concerned should work diligently to ensure that there aren’t conflicts.”

Prognosis healthy - local vendors share, educate Health Fair patrons

ocal health care providers, vendors, community members, and Chadron State students filled the Student Center Ballroom Thursday.

The Health Fair, which ran from 3-7 p.m., featured 39 health and wellness vendors from Chadron and the Dawes and Sheridan county region.

A few of the health and wellness services featured at the fair were optometry, massage therapy, medical, and chiropractic booths. There also was a law enforcement booth.

Several of the booths distributed flyers and treats to visitors, while oth-

ers featured free services and screenings for students.

The Chadron Medical Clinic provided blood pressure readings and flu shots.

Students and community members who visited the fair were able to learn about businesses’ offerings and even make appointments.

The event was co-sponsored by Chadron State College and the Chadron Community Hospital & Health Services and the Lifespan Wellness Team.

Officials: Library coffee shop to open at the end of February Leana Tajkov Reporter After a lengthy delay, the Reta E. King library’s coffee shop is expected to open at the end of February, Physical Facilities Coordinator Blair Brennan said last week.

“That’s a pretty safe date,” Brennan said about the anticipated February opening.

The shop, expected to open in fall 2013, has been delayed for months because of problems finding a contractor willing to undertake the oddly-sized construction job, Brennan said.

“The main reason for the delay is that

I could not get the contractor to take the project,” Brennan said.

“The coffee place falls into a small project category and it’s a bit strange.

It is too big of a project for local guys, but too small for everyone else,” he said.

Currently, pre-purchased barista equipment sits unused in the library.

However, after nine months of planning, professional contractors have been hired and are starting to work on the project, Brennan said.

According to Brennan, the coffee shop will open by the end of February, and there shouldn’t be any more delays.

CSC inducts 27 students into two honor societies Nine female students have been selected to become members of Chadron State College’s chapter of the Cardinal Key National Honor Society for the next academic year.

They are Stephanie Bailey of Rapid City, S.D., Justy Bullington, of Mullen, Cheyenne Deering of Wall, S.D., Amy Deichert of Spearfish, S.D., Samantha Eickleberry of Damar, Kan., Abby Gibson of Springview, Jennie Robbins of Mitchell, Erika Roybal of Denver, Colo., and Cathryn Zentner of Cairo.

Membership in Cardinal Key is based on scholarship, leadership and character, and is

regarded as one of the highest honors a woman can receive at Chadron State. Application is open to upperclassmen with a grade-point average of at least 3.25.

The CSC chapter places a strong emphasis on community service. Past projects have included organizing blood drives, ushering at performing arts events, fundraising for juvenile diabetes and assisting with the Ivy Day honors ceremony.

The Chadron State College chapter of Blue Key Honor Society recently inducted 18 men.

Coleman Ahrens of Palmer, Alaska, Evan Baker of Ord, Alex Coon of Bayard, Ryan Carden of San Diego, Cameron Cardwell of Scottsbluff, Jorge Flores of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, Lucas Kaufman of Torrington, Wyo., Jake Murphy of Harrison, Kyle McCarthy of Aurora, Jonn McLain of Chadron, Ryan Parriott of Bayard, Derek Powers of Arthur, Jacob Rissler of Gillette, Wyo., Cody Roberts of Trinchera, Colo., Zach Sandstrom of Chadron, David Vilmar of Abaco, Bahamas, and Jonathon Wohlers of Crawford.

Membership in Blue Key is considered to be

one of the highest honors a CSC male student can achieve. Members are chosen for displaying leadership, scholarship and character.

The group serves as a student service organization and sponsors projects of benefit to the college and student body. It was chartered on the CSC campus in the spring of 1932.

The men chosen for membership must be full-time students, be a junior or senior, have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and be involved in at least one CSC activity.

Rotaract to become a CSC club Based on a positive experience with Rotary International as a teenager, Chadron State College sophomore Abby Lane is spearheading the establishment of a chapter of Rotaract at CSC. An informational meeting about Rotaract is set for Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. in the Ponderosa Room of the CSC Student Center.

Refreshments will be provided and a suggestion box will be available for those who want to comment about possible service projects but are unable to attend the meeting.

Rotaract is a service organization for 18-30 year-old members in 167 countries. Through 8,000 clubs worldwide, Rotaract members are also provided opportunities for professional development.

Lane, who will be appointed as the president of the club,

spent a year in France as a Rotary International exchange student after graduating at 16 from Cheyenne Central High School in Cheyenne, Wyo. “There are a lot of service projects going on in Chadron, for the size of the town. Rachel Johnson from the Northwest Community Action Partnership is looking forward to working with us and providing sites where we can help such as Prairie Pines, Crest View, Closer to Home and others,” Lane said.

The psychology major is excited that Rotary International members from Chadron have volunteered to sponsor the campus group. They are Terri Haynes, a START advisor, Michelle Rickenbach, assistant registrar, Karen Pope, director of alumni and development with the Chadron State Founda-

tion and Connie Rasmussen, executive director of the Chadron State Foundation.

Lane said she is grateful for the opportunity the CSC students had to speak to the Chadron group, which was arranged by local chapter president Brenda Morford.

Other CSC students who will be appointed as officers in the new club include Mikayla Gallagher, vice president, Alex Clear, secretary, and Annie Johnson, treasurer.

Rotaract is in the process of becoming recognized as an official club by the Campus Activities Board. The group has established a CSC Rotaract Facebook page and plans to set up a Twitter account.

Construction keeps campus up to date

T

here are different steps that take place when college campus officials are preparing to improve their campuses.

A college campus can benefit from building improvements, landscaping, and other such improvements. The benefits can be endless, but some are to update facilities for use and to better the appearance for the campus to encourage new students to visit and enroll.

By updating one or multiple buildings on a campus, it keeps the campus modern. Every building throughout time will need updating, whether it is a new heater, or a new addition. In doing this, it can help brighten the landscape of the college.

People are drawn to improvements and when they know a college wants to improve itself, it shows that the college wants to make the environment comfortable for its students.

Chadron State College is in the process of many improvements throughout campus to benefit the students, faculty and community. Currently some may call the construction around campus an ‘eye sore,’ but it is necessary and will only be around for a short time. The construction can be seen in many different phases throughout campus if a student looks out a window each week to see the changes being made.

Campus constructions are essential to keep up with repairs, appearance, and to make it easier to use. Eagle Ridge apartments, the renovation and addition to the Physical Education building, the rangeland management center, and the new elevators in High Rise are some of many improvements for the CSC campus.

Gender dark ages are far from over

L

ast semester, I had a minor argument with a friend regarding my article about cat-calling in the October 23, 2013, issue of the Eagle.

Since then, I’ve thought a little about, not so much responding, but rather carrying on the conversation that I began with my (I believe), slightly misguided friend.

Above mentioned friend, Jacob Wirth, wrote a letter to the editor published in the October 30, 2013, issue of The Eagle. In the letter, Wirth stated: “The gender dark ages, which feminists have fought so hard to improve, are almost over in America.”

A little over a week after we published Wirth’s letter, a much bigger newspaper, The Huffington Post published the gem “23 Trends Guys Hate (But Women Love).” Ellie Krupnick, a female, (and I would here like to emphasize that this article was written by a FEMALE) interviewed men about trends that they hate on women.

The men’s answers ranged from high waisted skirts, to beanies, to oversized sweaters. There are even a couple comments on makeup. One man answered about bright red lipstick, “Really, really bright lipstick, because gross, you’re going to get that on me.” Obviously this man’s first mistake is to assume that anyone would want to kiss him.

The men quoted refer to high-waisted jeans as “mom-jeans,” and say that

high-waisted skirts “lack a certain degree of subtlety,” and that hair bows make a girl look “too young.” Leggings are either “too predictable,” or “a little gimmicky.” Here’s a wacky idea gents: maybe the first thought in a girl’s head as she slides a bow into her hair is that it’s cute, rather than I hope I catch me a man with this bow! Maybe we like oversize sweaters because, get this, we like to be comfortable.

The men quoted in Krupnick’s article state their opinion on women’s fashion so boldly. Clearly we females should care very deeply about what the men interviewed think. We should rush all our Peplums, leggings, and boots to the nearest thrift store and replace our entire wardrobe for these men, obviously. As if. I love my red lipstick, giant sweaters, and high-waisted skirts. What I wear is my business, it’s not meant to impress anyone but me.

And I have a feeling that a lot of women feel the same way.

The real problem here is that a well read newspaper actually took the time to publish Krupnick’s outrageous list.

In 2014, a female columnist can write about what trends men hate. Men can comment on something that isn’t even their business and get it published.

Not only published, but also revised and added to. It was updated last week.

If this isn’t bad enough, I might add that recently I’ve been noticing more and more articles about why women shouldn’t cut their hair short. In an

Sara Labor Contributor article, “Total Frat Move” (you can tell it’s a douchey site by the title), the author comments on Jennifer Lawrence’s new haircut, “You’d only bang her if she lost 10 pounds.” As though.

She cut. Her hair. For other people’s approval. As though any women cut their hair for other people’s approval!

One of my good friends said, “I feel taller when my hair is shorter. I feel more confident, and I like that feeling.”

So women like it, but men publishing well read blogs still feel the need to comment on how much they don’t like it. People read these things, and worst of all, agree with them. Things that comment negatively on what women wear, how they cut their hair, and how they do their makeup are still being published and read. Internet and media continue to spread misogyny far and wide. The gender dark ages are far from over.

Education should adopt naturalism pratices

I

n the United States, a country where individualism is emphasized, a main objective of public education is to act as an institution that molds young individuals into positive members of American society.

Currently, the public education system attempts to accomplish this and other goals through standardized testing.

One could say this is attempt misses the intended mark. If we wish for public schools to create positive members of society, many different personalities must be encouraged; standardized testing does not encourage different personalities.

Therefore, the public education system should look into replacing standardized testing. (Standardized testing has merit in its practicality.

The following suggestion is not practical, but while practicality is to be considered to an extent, it should not be what holds public school back.)

Also, the public education system should look into dropping many other practices originating from the general concept of standards, however impractical. Finally, what should replace these practices are practices of the opposite end of the spectrum: those based in the education philosophy known as naturalism.

In a hypothetical scenario where naturalism and its practices are the base for the public education system, education would theoretically be an institution that helps every individual discover who he or she is. The role of the teacher is to objectively

lead the student to this self-discovery through improvised lessons not based on strict curriculum, but through what educational subjects the individual finds interest in.

The end result might be a better result in the objective of creating positive members of society because individuals are allowed to follow their interests instead of what he or she is told they should follow.

Speaking of such (and moving on the topic of how the change to a naturalist education system would positively change one’s personal life), one might find it unfortunate that the lifestyles which the public education system seems to praise and regard as successful are but few kinds (for example, a life in the fields of medicine or engineering). Why exaggerate any one subject’s importance at the expense of others?

An education system based on naturalism would not impose an attractive lifestyle in the minds of individuals. Instead, it would allow them to discover what could be an attractive lifestyle for them. A good way to start the application of this ideal would be to get rid of standardized testing.

I believe the greatest purpose of education is to provide individuals with the knowledge required to find one’s self. What the vast majority may believe is good, one may intuitively feel is bad. In order to live in accordance with one’s intuitive morals, and therefore one’s self, one needs to be educated on the workings behind his morals. In sum, education allows

an individual to liberate him or herself from society’s imposition.

The role of the teacher is to help students discover themselves. In this way, the teacher should hope to have an impact on each student. The impact should strictly be in regards to helping each student better understand what he or she is trying to learn.

Having an impact by way of imposing beliefs of any kind that are not applicable to the above proposition would be to delude the student’s clarity of his or her self.

The role of the student should be directed by one objective: to actively pursue matters he finds of interest.

A student who freely pursues his or her own inquiries would, ideally, confidently advance in the direction of his or her dreams and to live the life which he or she has imagined.

In theory, this results in much more effective learning. It would fulfill one of the main goals of education: become an individual who can be productive for today’s society.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear editor: Andrew Jackson once said: ‘Any man worth his salt will stick up for what he believes right, but it takes a slightly better man to acknowledge instantly and without reservation that he is in error.” Before the executive board meeting last Monday, I made an error in procedure. While I still feel that there is a potential for a conflict of interest in this situation; after talking with all the senate executive board, faculty advisors, and my personal advisors, it has come to my attention that I lack the constitutional foundation to call for Ms. Swanson’s resignation. Therefore; in order to rectify the procedure, I hereby recommend that Senate refuse to

accept Ms. Swanson’s resignation from Monday January 20th’s meeting. I apologize for any perceived malice or ill intent. It was never, nor has it been, my intention to come across as rash or offensive. Those familiar with my character can attest to that. My intent was, and is, to be proactive in preventing situations, causes, or issues that would lead to circumstances identical to last year. We need to deport Bieber to Canada

I

f you have gone on to Twitter, let alone anywhere on the internet, within the last few weeks, odds are you have heard about this debacle with Justin Bieber getting a DUI

while dragracing in a Lamborghini. If that wasn’t enough, his mugshot has been circulating the internet, showing off his terrible grin. To top it all off, his bail was set at $2,500, and he was released shortly after the bail was paid.

A bunch of his fans are now flooding Twitter with messages of support for the singer.

It comes as no surprise to me that his fans would be in an uproar over this, but are they aware of the fact that he could have potentially killed someone while behind the wheel?

Just because he is a popular so-called musician does not mean that he has immunity from the law.

This is like the case of the kid in Texas who didn’t have to go to jail after killing four pedestrians in a car crash. To be fair, he still served probation, but that’s a pretty weak sentence for killing four people. His defense

claimed he was suffering from affluenza, which is where his family felt that wealth bought privilege and there was no rational link between behavior and consequences.

I think it is safe to assume the Justin Bieber suffers from this affluenza. However, being rich doesn’t give someone the excuse to endanger innocent lives and act like a spoiled little child.

But there is a light at the end of the tunnel, ladies and gentlemen. Yesterday on Jan. 29, a petition on The White House’s Change.org website went viral and racked up 100,000 signatures. What is the petition, you ask? It is to deport Justin Bieber back to Canada, which might actually be possible.

Right now, he is in the country on a visa called an O-1. He has said in the past that he has no plans to become a full US citizen.

If that’s the case, then there might actually

be grounds to deport him back to Canada. If that is the case, then I hope that he gets the punishment he deserves.

I have to say that I’m not a fan of his work at all. I think although he can play his own instruments, it still doesn’t change the fact that he has let record companies damage his integrity and he ended up being their little puppet, putting out bad song after bad song in hopes to make the sales of music CD’s go up.

The truth is, he sold his soul to the corporate machine a long time ago, and now, he is trying to cling on to whatever shred of popularity he has left, whether it is good or bad publicity.

He’s trying to be the rebellious bad boy stereotype little teenage girls fantasize about.

He isn’t a good role model, and sure as hell isn’t a good person.

The floor is filled with dancers, but it becomes crowded as the “Cupid Shuffle” comes on. It’s not long before the dance floor and half of the carpeted area is full, and walking room is almost nonexistent.

Although the chilly weather outside attempts to keep people inside their warm rooms, the atmosphere inside the ballroom is hot and sweaty.

Toward the last hour of the dance, a group dance competition breaks out giving people the opportunity to strut their stuff. Students gather in a tight circle as the two groups go head-to-head, each dancer hoping to shine.

Throwers set records at BHSU invitational Christopher Smith Reporter The Chadron State track and field team participated in the Black Hills State Dave Little Invitational, Spearfish, S.D., on Saturday, where two Chadron State seniors set school records in throwing events.

Charith Kapukotuwa, senior of Chilaw, SriLanka, won the 35-pound weight throw at 61-1 1/2. This distance beat the school record of 60-3 that he set in last year’s national championships.

He also had a career-best mark in shot put, 55-4 3/4. He won the shot put competition with that throw. With that mark, he has qualified for nationals in March.

Alyssa Norton, senior of Rushville, also won the shot put with a mark of 48-6 1/2, which breaks the previous school record 48-1 3/4. Her best throw last year was 46-6.

Stachia Reuwsaat, freshman of Blackhawk, S.D., won the 60-meter dash in 7.89 seconds and the long jump at 18-7 3/4. This jump was one of six provisional qualifying marks for the national meet in March.

Karl McFarlane, senior of Montego Bay, Jamaica, in the 60-meter high hurdles, and Zerek Jones, sophomore of La Junta, Colo., in the 600-meter run, were the other winners for Chadron State at the invitational.

The Chadron State men won the 4x400 and the distance medley relays. The women finished first in distance medley race and placed second in the 4x400.

CSC will host its annual Twilight Meet beginning at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Colorado State University-Pueblo quickly responded with a 2-pointer.

With 16 minutes left in the game, CSU-Pueblo took over, leading by one point, continuing throughout the first half by making 69 percent of its field goals. CSC made 42 percent of field goals and 55 percent of its 3-pointers in the first half.

Guard Grant Stone, senior of Canton, Mich., scored four of his eight field goals within the first half of the game. The first half ended with CSUPueblo, 54, CSC, 39.

The second half began with forward Kend-

rick Holliman, junior of Spanish Fort, Ala., scoring a 2-point shot. CSU-Pueblo continued with a 13-point lead. Holliman shot three of four field goals alongside forward Kyle Vinich, junior of Casper, Wyo., who also made three of four field goals.

The game ended CSU-Pueblo, 94, CSC, 88.

Saturday’s game against the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, left Chadron State behind again, losing 92-82.

Throughout the game, CSC made 44 percent of its field goals and 65 percent of its free throws.

Guard Evan Brooks, junior of Ontario, Calif., made four of seven field goals, while forward Zac Bargen, senior of Chadron, made three of six.

In the first half, with 10 minutes left, CSC took lead until UCCS made a 2-pointer, tying the teams, with six minutes left—UCCS lead for the rest of the game.

CSC sits 11th on the RMAC standings with a RMAC record of 4-9 and an overall record of 7-10.

Women lose twice to Colorado schools; look ahead to Friday Mouhamed Diop Reporter Chadron State lost a close game, 65-60, against the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Saturday. Both teams shot less than 40 percent from the field; however, the Mountain Lions capitalized on foul shots and turnovers to win the game.

The Eagles shot 38 percent from the floor and 19 percent from the 3-point line. Half of CSC’s points were in the paint.

Despite not shooting the ball well, the Eagles were only down two with less than a minute to go. However, the Mountain Lions capitalized on a turnover in the last seconds to win the game.

Kattie Ranta, senior of Rapid City, S.D., led the Eagles with 24 points to go with 11 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the season. Kate Simonton, junior of Bakersfield, Calif., scored 12 points, and senior forward of Kimball, Kayli Rageth, added eight points.

Abby Kirchoff, junior of Barrington, Ill., led

the Mountains Lions with 18 points; while Jeri Pikul, senior of Buena Vista, Colo., scored 12 points. They were the only two who scored in double figures.

The Eagles lost to Colorado State University-Pueblo, 73-60, Friday.

Dallas Shaw, junior of Buffalo, Wyo., led the Eagles with 16 points. Junior guard of Scottsbluff, Hattie Guzman, and Ranta scored 12 points each. Rageth added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Junior forward of Broomfield, Colo., Katie Nehf led the ThunderWolves with 22 points and five steals. All the other starters scored between eight and 16 points. Paige Ramm, senior of Prescott, Ariz., and Alex Evans, senior of Louisville, Colo., finished in double figures with 16 and 12, respectively. Taylor Fox, senior of Santa Cruz, Calif., recorded nine points and grabbed 12 boards for the ThunderWolves.

The Eagles will travel south to play against Metro State and Regis this weekend. CSC will play Metro State, Denver, 5 p.m., Friday and Regis, Denver, 3 p.m., Saturday.

Colorado duals end wrestlers’ winning streak Janelle Kesterson Reporter The Eagle wrestlers interrupt their nine-win streak with two dual loses.

On Thursday, the Eagles traveled to Grand Junction, Colo., to take on the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks.

Jordan DeBus, senior of Mitchell, 184-pounds, wrestled up a weight class to 197-pounds, and won his match with a 6-2 decision.

After the team suffered a loss, a fire was lit in Taylor Summers, redshirt freshman of Plymouth, 125-pounds. Summers won his match with a 9-0 major decision. Then, Dustin Stodola, senior of Clarkson, 133-pounds, achieved a pin in 4:37.

It was after these two match victories that the Mavericks gained the speed that carried them to win on the remaining five matches, and ultimately the 21-19 RMAC victory.

On Friday, the Eagles traveled to Gunnison,

Artist colors in the lines of her life Leala A. Lewis Contributor

The exhibit hanging in Gallery 239 in Memorial Hall features an assortment of floral and fruit still-life watercolors, contrasted by one fashion design and a lone portrait, both in charcoal.

The collection on the left wall is filled with pink carnations, pink and yellow irises, and purple wisteria. Rounding the corner reveals blue hydrangeas, pink Japanese magnolias, mauve and purple irises, white peonies, and violets with deep, saturated purples, blues, mauve, and yellows. Those guide the viewer around the corner to white daisies, white camellia, brilliant red amaryllis and white azaleas, and even a white tulip. Peppered among the floral paintings are renditions of apples, oranges, a thin crabapple branch donned with reddish-yellow apples and a sole mistletoe branch. An occasional butterfly and bee accent a few of the paintings. Entering the gallery is like walking into a flower garden— without the scents.

The artist is Chadron resident Myra Omelanuk, who celebrates her 90th birthday Friday and whose original works from the past 75 years, are on display in Memorial Hall’s secondfloor gallery.

Born Myra Middleton on Jan. 30, 1924, Omelanuk was raised in Augusta, Ga. Soon after the dust was settling from the Great Depression, she enrolled in art classes at Augusta’s Tubman High School where she often found herself in trouble for drawing portraits during class.

“I drew portraits in school of friends and sketches of teachers,” she said with a laugh.

“I just drew all the time; it was just a natural instinct­—since I could pick up a pencil.”

As a high school senior in 1941, Omelanuk designed place cards for her class’s senior banquet. Taking inspiration from David O. Selznick’s production of Margaret Mitchell’s, ”Gone With the Wind,” released two years earlier in 1939, she drew place cards with portraits of some of the film’s characters, including Prissy, Rhett and Scarlet. Omelanuk’s artistic talents include dress designs.

“I remember early on, that her favorite flower subjects were pansies and violets,” her son said.

Myra Omelanuk’s early pieces are less defined, softer around the edges, and possess a more delicate overall appearance. The greenery in the piece titled, “Carnations,” has an intricate, lacy appearance. Later works are more defined, sharper around the edges, with colors that are more vivid.

Myra Omelanuk moved to Chadron 10 years ago to be closer to two of her three children—her youngest Joy Omelanuk, who is Project Coordinator for the Dean of Liberal Arts at Chadron State College, and Kathy Bahr, who is a professor of English, also at CSC. Since moving to Chadron she has entered her pieces each year into the annual juried art show at the Carnegie Arts Center in Alliance.

Last year she earned an honorable mention. In addition to her Memorial Hall show, Myra Omelanuk has exhibited her work in Augusta and Wayne Ford, Ga. The gallery is open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday or by appointment. The show runs through Feb. 5.

Missing links belong on the Internet; not life Justy R. Bullington Lifestyles Editor

The first step is admitting you have a problem. Since I consider my readers some of my closest friends, I feel as though I should share my addiction with all of you. That’s right, I Justy Bullington, have an addiction (sigh) to Pinterest.

There are two kinds of women: women that have Pinterest addictions, and women that lie. The way I see it, Pinterest is like my very own magical place where my clothes are better, I’m more crafty, I’m an interior designer, and my eyeliner looks the same on both eyes. Who doesn’t need a little escape from the real world, right?

Either my addiction is growing or the self-help books I’ve been reading on relationships are starting to kick in, but lately I’ve noticed that Pinterest applies to our lives more than we might like to admit.

Although my real closet is far from my fashion board, my DIY projects look like kindergarten art, the horrific piles of

clean and dirty clothes take away from the room decor, and let’s face it, one eye’s liner always turns out better than the other the Pinterest—life similarity lies in the searching..

Naturally, I spend a lot of my pinning time in the Women’s Fashion board. However, every time I find exactly what I was looking for I also found myself double clicking my way into a missing link. I continue to spend time sorting through items that just didn’t trigger a “pin” worthy response until I find “the one.”

As I continue to pursue “the one” it always ends with an unfound web page. I began to think maybe these beautifully patterned, well put together threads didn’t even exist. Even more sadly, I continue to search, click, and try again even though I know that the chance of being led astray was not only possible – but probable.

With a New Year still in the dressing room the timing to update the closet you call life couldn’t be more fitting. My advice? Get rid of all the missing links. Set expectations and even more importantly stick to them. You want to be taken out on a date? Demand it. In order to be treated like a lady you have to start acting like one. When “Prince Charming” pulls up to your house and honks the horn don’t go running outside. No.

You sit your little fashionista self back down on the couch and let him either turn back into a frog, drive away, or get out of the car and come to the door. Honestly, if he didn’t know to come to door in the first place I’m going to go ahead and label him a missing link. And no, ladies, getting a text at 10:30 p.m. to “come watch a movie” is not an acceptable date.

As women we constantly complain about how chivalry has died. Although that may be true, it is equally true that women have stopped demanding chivalris behavior. In easier terms: “why buy the cow when you’re getting the milk for free?”

You might be pleasantly surprised with the men you start to attract.

Will removing the missing links end with you at home eating dinner alone? It’s possible. Will you have to keep your “Wedding Board” on Pinterest private a little longer? Yes. Will it prevent you of wasting your time and damaging your feelings? Absolutely. I’ve always been told to dress for the job you want; I recently decided to look at relationships the same way.

Date for the way you want your marriage to be. If he doesn’t open the door for you now, he’s not going to open the door for you 25 years down the road. If you wouldn’t settle for a new pair of shoes, you most certainly should not settle on a man.
