New marketing coordinator talks goals, seeks input T.J. Thomson Executive Editor Chadron State can expect an updated president’s webpage, better information access, and increased transparency, Interim Marketing Coordinator Tena Cook said Wednesday.

CSC President Randy Rhine appointed Cook to the position Friday after former coordinator Justin Haag accepted a job at NebraskaLAND magazine. Cook said she is splitting her time between her new post and her former post as director of admissions.

Cook said the revised president’s page will serve as a communications tool for the campus community, and will feature an “updates from his Cook desk,” blog-style format.

“The links, stories, and photos he [Rhine] posts and I help prepare will increase his accessibility,” Cook said. “He’s already accessible, but his goal is to be even more accessible.”

As part of her new responsibilities, Cook will serve alongside

members of the College Relations Department in an effort to groups conducted by an external agency.

“I think if we work with the right agency, there’d be a way to promote CSC and establish a consistent identity.

Violence only breeds hate

Television news sometimes slips in its race to be the first to report.

Turn off the TV The 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy had a much larger impact on our world today than we realize. In the turn of events that followed JFK’s death, Broadcast Television companies scrambled to meet the public’s need for information, chronicling every detail as it unfolded. The 4 days following became referred to as “Television’s Finest Hour.”

That single event marked the formation of something that draws the ire of many a skeptic today: the 24-hour news cycle. Television news provides instant gratification for anyone desiring information, but amid the selection of top stories, a symptom arises that does more harm than good.

When stories break, such as the Sandy Hook, Conn., shooting, the race to report a story first creates problems. There is no doubt that the public needs to be informed, but the hasty manner in which event’s like these are relayed leave inconsistencies, spawning inevitable conspiracy theories and typo laden hoax accusations.

Facts of the matter are seldom vetted properly, and when inaccurate information is published, television news channels do little to acknowledge, rescind, or correct a story after it’s reported. But there’s another detrimental symptom of this kind of crisis reporting. When there are no crisis occurring, producers are left with blank space that advertisers have already paid hefty sums of money for.

These content holes lead to the generation of issues that were exhibited this past week.

Did Beyoncé Knowles lip-sync the national anthem during the Presidential inauguration? Why did the First Lady roll her eyes at Speaker John Boehner? Roundtable panels and political commentary were allocated whole hours to discuss such inconsequential garbage.

Why should anyone honestly have their attention focused towards such trivial issues? Television news has had its finest hour, and it’s clear that they are grabbing at straws in an attempt to stay relevant.

ast week, The Eagle ran a column about how there are some times when it is appropriate to use physical violence in a situation, and how we should be able to encourage children to use violence effectively to solve our problems.

Shall we take a quick peek at some statistics on violence in schools? In 2011, there was a survey by the CDC that reported that 5.9 percent of students did not go to school for one or more days in the days preceding the survey because they felt unsafe at school; 7.4 percent reported being threatened or injured with a weapon on school property; 20.1 percent reported being bullied on school property; and 32.8 percent reported being in a physical fight, the prevalence higher

Movies’ portrayal of romance flawed

Events Coordinator f you’re a single woman and have watched the movie or read the book, “He’s Just Not That Into You,” you’ve experienced that moment of embarrassment when you realized you’re guilty of at least one “relationship crime.” If you haven’t watched the movie or read the book, I strongly suggest that you buy a pint of ice cream and do so now.

The story can be somewhat blunt; there’s an instant realization that men are not complicated. Women make men complicated. As a woman, I have officially gone against an unspoken code taken at birth by saying that, but we all know it’s true. Mothers tell young girls that when a boy is mean to you, it’s because he likes you; a statement that will plant itself in young girls’ brains and marks a downward spiral of terrible relationship advice. As we use the only advice we’ve heard multiple times throughout our youth; we then apply it to potential partners in adulthood. After all, it’s not like our beloved

mothers would lie to us, right? (*cough* tion will only lead to disappointment.

Hagel best fit for defense secretary

strongly support President Obama’s Secretary of Defense pick, former Nebraska Sen., Chuck Hagel.

A decorated Vietnam Veteran with two tours as an Army infantry squad leader, Hagel is, without a doubt

the best fit for the job.

The selection of a Veteran, an enlisted man none-the-less is something that has been missing from the cabinet position, whose sole purpose, is to lead and coordinate the Department of Defense.

In an interview with the Veteran’s History Project in 2002, Hagel offered his insight that resonates with me: “People just don’t understand it unless they’ve been through it. There’s no glory, only suffering in war.”

The Veteran stereotype of “You don’t know man, you weren’t there!,” would apply in this case, but it’s not a logical fallacy. Someone who has been “there” is willing to put a lot more thought and consideration into exercising restraint, rather than rushing head-on into a war with shoddy intelligence.

Hagel has recently been the victum of attacks that attempt to portray him as

Hagel’s experiences trudging through the jungles of Vietnam have given him a more human perspective of war.

Rather than some West Point General who treats his troops like poker chips on a mapboard, Hagel’s approach is with sincere concern for the people who actually fight our wars.

Without first hand combat experience, whatever qualities a civilian leader posseses in the Defense Department are going to forever be lacking, and prior combat experience is not a handicap.

That should be the first and foremost consideration for a man who advises the president on the merits of sending young men and women off to die in a foreign country.

Facebook is no alternative for face-to-face

Photo Editor ’m old-fashioned; I’m just going to get that out of the way right now. In my lifetime, I’ve heard multiple people tell me stories of how they met; my sister set us up, we met while at school, we worked together, and so on and so forth. Unfortunately, I’ve also heard the whole we-met-online stories. I say unfortunately because I don’t see online dating as a way people should meet others.

I’ve always disliked online dating but the thing that really pushed me past that thin line was an article in Time Magazine called “Will Facebook steal online dating sites’, girl?” One sentence in the article states, “any single person can save him or herself a lot of trouble and odious evenings at the wrong end of the bar, by doing a little leg-

work online first – weeding out those potential dates whose attributes they could not tolerate and singling out those who look more simpatico.”

Seriously? Going on dates with people you like or just hanging out with someone to learn more about them is half the fun. If it’s “a lot of trouble” to do that, then what’s the point of trying to find that person? Relationships take work and they are never easy, so if a person can’t go through the trouble to get to know the person face-to-face or simply hang out with them for an hour at a time, then they shouldn’t try for a relationship.

Let’s return to Facebook. As everyone knows, Facebook has broken through as a giant social network elephant that no one has hesitated to jump on. I only know a small handful of people who don’t have a Facebook account. As of right now, Facebook doesn’t have an online dating page people can run to, but it could be seen as a sort of dating site.

I know people who go on Facebook searching for girls or guys they think are hot and then they send them a friend request, hoping they accept so the lookers can continue in their quest to learn all they can about the girl or guy. In the article, the author states, “while it doesn’t have an of official dating app, it certainly has a bunch of ways to meet people. Men often prefer to

do their date-fishing on Facebook because women are more open to approaches from guys who know somebody they know, even though ‘friend’ has a very elastic meaning in the world of the big blue lower-case “f.”

Is that what Facebook has come to? Is it slowly becoming a dating site while no one notices the changes? I hope not, as I still see the site as a place where I can keep in touch with friends 400 miles away, share pictures, and occasionally message people I can’t get a hold of via cell phone.

After talking with a friend on this particular subject, I created a profile on a dating site. I’m not a hypocrite, but I figured I can’t judge something I’ve never tried before. So, I went through all of the basic steps and when I got to the last question, I slapped my forehead. The question was “what are you looking for?”

A few of the options were new friends, long-length relationship, short-length relationship, and sex partner. Why is that last one even an option? By giving the option to have a possible one-night stand with some random stranger, online dating goes into the creeper factor. I know all the safety tips about using your information online and that, even on Facebook, people could be pretending to be someone they’re not.

A person could be talking to a 35-yearold guy, sitting in his mother’s basement, eating Cheetos, pretending to be a 20-year-

old lacrosse player from a university in some big city. Or, it could be a 15-year-old girl pretending to be in her twenties just so she can meet older people. That just reeks of trouble.

Have you ever sent a text message to someone and it takes forever for them to get back to you? Well, that’s what it’s like when you talk to someone on a dating site.

You receive or send a message to them and it takes them two days to respond. It would save a person a lot of time to go out and talk with someone rather than sit at a computer, waiting for a response that may never come.

Another thing I’m not fond of is the fact that they give you tiny boxes for you to write down what you like to do, what your favorite books are, and what you’re like as a person, among other things. I don’t know about anyone else but I’ve never been able to look at someone’s profile and say, “hey, this person has a nice personality, I can see it just by reading these few words they’ve posted.”

So, when I said I was old-fashioned I wasn’t kidding. I want to meet someone face-to-face; start out with a friendship, learn about their quirks, how they act, and all of the things that interest them and then, once I feel I’ve gotten to know them well enough and we have developed this relationship, I’ll be happy to go forward with the dating scene.

Despite double losses, players stay positive Molly Wedan Sports Editor While the stands were packed with students dressed in togas, Chadron State men’s basketball team warmed up for their contest against Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves on Friday. After the teams had gone through warm up stretches and the tip off was won by the ‘Wolves, the students voices could be heard loud and clear. That propelled the Eagles to keep driving and scoring, which they did after two and a half minutes into the game. Kyle Vinich, sophomore forward of Casper, Wyo., scored the first points for the Eagles, after CSU-Pueblo already had eight points on the board. However, Vinich’s shot propelled the team to go on 13-7 scoring run for a chunk of time.

However, the second half proved to be a different story, when it took five minutes for the Eagles to score more than five points. CSU-Pueblo had five players who scored in double digits, while Chadron’s lone player to do so was Zac Bargen, junior forward of Chadron, with 11 points. Those five

players helped propel the ‘Wolves past the Eagles 87-47. Chadron’s Chris Taylor, junior guard of Amman, Jordan, scored eight points as did junior guard of Canton, Mich., Grant Stone.

“I thought at times we did really well and showed improvement and positives, we just had lapses that cost us the game. If we spent less time in those lapses we could have won,” Taylor said.

Featuring a new theme for a new day, the students were embezzled with tropical gear and luau-appropriate garments on Saturday for the RMAC contest against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. The visiting team won the tip once again, but the Eagles came out fiercer, coming within one point in just two minutes of playing time. However, the Mountain Lions outstanding shooting percentage of 55 for the night came them the edge to win the game, 92-73.

The second half proved to be the deciding factor when the Mountain Lions led by as much as 24 points when they converted on some turnovers and missed rebounds by the Eagles. On a good note, Chadron had more players score in double digits than the night before. Bargen scored the

team-high 20, but Kendrick Holliman, sopho-more forward of Spanish Fort, Ala., finished with 16 and David Downey, junior guard of Scotts-bluff, had 13. Holliman also led in rebounds with seven. Another positive note for the Eagles was Brandon Pippenger, freshman forward of Banning, Calif., who came off the bench and helped the Eagles defense with five rebounds and three blocks.

“As a whole team we need to sacrifice more on ofof fense and defense because sacrifice wins games.

I need to continue to play defense and rebounds and show energy and poise for the rest of the team,” Holliman said.

The Eagles will host another double-action weekend with games against Metro State on Friday and Regis University on Saturday. Both are scheduled to start at 8 p.m. in Armstrong.

“We’ve beat Regis before, but we can’t slack at all and can’t take any team in the RMAC lightly.

Metro is No.1 in the conference so it is definitely not going to be an easy game. We just need to put our best foot forward to have a chance, but every team is beatable,” Taylor said.

Eagles fall to 3-14 in RMAC To start the double header for the weekend, the Chadron State women’s basketball team took on the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves and battled it out play-by-play. The ‘Wolves shooting percentage of 50 from the field and Laurel Kearsely’s 30 points and 10 rebounds helped them secure the win 79-60.

The Eagles had a slow start when they were down 14 to zero after four and a half minutes into the first half. Dallas Shaw, sophomore guard of Buffalo, Wyo., made a shot behind the threepoint line to put the Eagles on the scoreboard. Shaw ended the game with 13 points, leading scorer for Chadron, and Greer Babbe, junior forward of Papillion, also scored in double digits with 10 points.

The Eagles took more shooting chances than CSU-Pueblo during the game, but only connected on 23 of 68. The ThunderWolves now improve to 12-4 overall,

On Saturday, the Eagles came out hungry for a win against University of Colorado-Colorado Springs and scored within the first 40 seconds when Kate Simonton, sophomore guard of Bakersfield, Calif., made a jump shot. Simonton ended the game with nine points, but Kattie Ranta, junior guard of Rapid City, S.D., led the Eagles with 18 points.

The Eagles hung on the Mountain Lions heels in the first half when the lead switched 10 times.

Both teams were close in shooting percentage from the field, with Chadron shooting 41 percent and the Mountain Lions 46 percent. However, UCCS outscored the Eagles from the charity stripe 83 percent compared to Chadron’s 56.

Most of the Mountain Lions free throw points were in the second half, as well 41 of their shooting percentage.

The Eagles face the Metro State Roadrunners on Friday and the Regis University Rangers on Saturday in RMAC competition. Both are set to start at 6 p.m. in Armstrong.

Moala Tautua: BIG man, BIG dream Molly Wedan Sports Editor The cliché question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” can produce interesting answers. A princess, doctor, and cowboy are among the many possible answers. When asked that question, the 6-foot-7-inch, 240 pound San Franciscan, Moala Tautua’a never thought his answer would be an international professional basketball player.

Tautua’a played for Chadron for his entire college career and brought many talents to the court for his team. With his charisma and talent, he was a key contributor to the Eagles’ basketball program as a whole. Last season, Tautua’a averaged 13 points per game, and had a field goal shooting percentage of 63.5. He played in every game, and brought more than just points to the court.

“We miss having the inside presence he brought. His passionate leadership was something that helped us tremendously. He gave the game, as well as his teammates, all his love,” redshirt-freshman point guard Justyn Anderson said. Anderson medical redshirted last year, but was still able to see the presence Moala had with the team.

Tautua’a was found by the KL Dragons, a team from the Asean Basketball League (ABL).

After graduating, Moala put a video out on YouTube, where scouts from the ABL were able to watch it and decide that they needed his talent. After many conversations and exchange of much information, Tautua’a signed with the KL Dragons and prepared his trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Since then, Tautua’a has been living the life he has always dreamed about.

“I’ve always dreamed of being a professional basketball player, but being an undersized post, my dreams of playing in the NBA were a little far fetched. But, internationally, I did think some I could sneak my way into there somewhere… I’m glad I did because I love playing basketball, and now I get to do it as my job,” Tautua’a said.

The ABL is made up of six teams, all located in Southeast Asia. Each team plays the other five teams four times, and then the playoffs start. Instead of having a Monday through Friday office schedule, Tautua’a has a gameby-game schedule. At the moment, Tautua’a is sitting out due to a back injury after being under undercutted on a dunk and landing on his back. He has been in recovery mode for a few weeks, but is ecstatic to appear in the games this weekend. Not only have Tautua’a’s skills improved, he’s also learned life lessons. cul When asked about the difference of cultures, Tautua’a admits to being shocked.

“Yes, definite culture shock. I’m used to talking to everyone; here I kind of just get stared at because I am about two feet taller than most people here,” Tautua’a said.

find out the hard way. Another area of culture Tautua’a had to deal with was the language barrier. Fortunately, with Tautua’a’s background, he already knew some Philippine language and has been able to touch up on it.

For a bulky post player, diet is very important, especially with the intense workouts basketball players endure. The change in food options was a challenge that Tautua’a had to overcome, and is now a pretty renowned chef, which he prides himself on.

“I learned how to cook teriyaki chicken, fried chicken, chow mien, and chicken fried rice,” Tautua’a said.

Tautua’a did reveal that the poverty in Southeast Asia is more prevalent than here in America. There is no middle class, or happy medium, “…either everyone is really rich or really poor.” Seeing how fortunate American’s really are is a life lesson that Tuatua’a has really taken to heart.

“I’ve learned that I take a lot for granted living in America. I even appreciate cross walks and stop lights.

No one really follows the rules out here, people here could make a two-lane highway four cars wide,” Tautua’a said.

In the words of Evander Holyfield, “It is not the size of a man but the size of his heart that matters.”

Moala Tautua’a may be a monster of a basketball player, but it’s his heart and determination that keeps him moving forward in the world of basketball.

Through a series of dances, performers charmed the audience with the ever-famous tale of a girl trying to find her way home. Along with numerous childern, and the main cast being no older than 14, three CSC students joined in the fun. Though wordless, the cast seemed to amuse the audience with their actions and expressions as they moved along through the ballet. Favorite part of the play: I enjoy punching people in the face. It’s a great stress relief, and a lot of fun, and a great way to stay in shape. Also, watching super heroes, vampires, and cowboys is like re-living your childhood in an hour and thirty minutes.

Hardest part about the play: The bruises when you get home from combat. I’m suffering for the art.

CSC Student shows off the patterns of Scotland clan-specific patterns, and the wide array of plaids was born.
