A combination of un-forecasted rainfall, removed downspouts, and a broken machine resulted in flooding in Old Admin and Crites buildings during midterm break.

According to The Weather Channel website, about half an inch of rain fell and caused flooding in three rooms in Old Admin and in the basement of Crites.

Other than paint bubbling on walls, the rooms are back to normal, Dale Grant, vice president of finance & administration, said.

The flooding in Old Admin rooms 331, 241, and 131 happened because the downspouts outside the building were removed, Grant said.

According to Grant, the spouts were removed because they’ve been leaking for years, so the school contracted with a company out of Scottsbluff, to fix the downspouts. After they were removed, the machinery the company was using broke so they couldn’t finish the job. Because of missing downspouts and missing section of gutter, the company will be re-

sponsible for the damage, Grant said.

In the first floor computer lab, room 131, one computer and one scanner were damaged due to the water. The school will not have to pay for those replacements either. For more information on the computer lab, see related story on page 3.

Based on the average desktop computer cost, Grant is estimating the computer replacement and the scanner replacement will cost less than $2,500.

The company has not given a specific date for when they will have its machine back up and running to finish the job.

“We’ve been kind of pushing them because if we get a lot of rain again it’s going to have the same results,” Grant said. “It’s in their own best interest to get it fixed.”

The flooding of Crites was a result of the construction in front of Crites. The silt plugged the drain, allowing the water to run inside the building. The contractor will also be responsible for that damage.

There were a few other places where windows were left open so there was a little water found in a few other buildings, Grant said. But those buildings were not carpeted so the cleanup was much easier. Grant noted a small leak in the hall between High Rise and the Gold Room and another in the new Rangeland Lab Building.

On Monday night, the water was found in Crites Hall and the water was found in Old Admin Tuesday morning. And the custodial staff cleaned up the water in the buildings, Grant said.

There is a $25,000 deductible on CSC’s property damage insurance.

Bookstore manager arrested Tuesday Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor The former manager of the Eagle Pride Bookstore was released from Sheridan County Jail Tuesday night after police arrested her earlier that day on a warrant accusing her of stealing $10,500 from the store, a Chadron Police Department press release states.

Sarah Porter, 25, of Gordon, posted 10 percent of $10,000

bond after Nebraska State Patrol executed the warrant in Sheridan County, and transported her to the Sheridan County Jail.

The theft is a Class IIA felony, the release states.

The Eagle Pride Bookstore is owned by Follett Corporation of Winchester, Illinois. Police said Follett employees provided detailed information from a Feb. 8 store audit that showed $10,591.28 was missing from the company’s safe, according to internally-generated safe reports dating to September 2015, the release states.

A call to Follett went unanswered Wednesday afternoon.

Eagle Pride Bookstore employee Nathan Pindell said Wednesday afternoon, that Porter is not the manager of the store and that the store does “not have a standing manager at this time.”

After receiving the information, Chadron Police Department conducted an investigation over several weeks before the warrant for Porter was issued. The Chadron Police Department was assisted by the Dawes County Attorney’s Office and Nebraska State Patrol.

Student lab loses 1 computer, scanner due to rain Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor One computer and scanner were lost due to rainfall leaking into the first floor computer lab in Old Admin, Room 131.

The computer lab is designated for the education department and first priority is given to the students in that department but if the room is open, it is available for all students.

The leak was caused by a combination of almost half an inch of rain that fell on Monday, March 7, according to The Weather Channel’s website, and missing downspouts from the building, according to Dale Grant, vice president of finance & administration.

The damage in the computer lab was noticed Tuesday morning, but by Friday the lab was back up and running.

The computers on campus in the labs are on a rotational basis for when they will be replaced, according to Ted Tewahade, information technology analyst, and Ann Burk, information technology chief officer, and the computers in that lab are on a 5-year rotation. Burk said the 5 years is the target rotation but it varies from lab to lab.

The computers in that lab are almost 5 years old, Burk said.

“We’ll be taking a look at them here in the next couple years,” Burk said.

The lost computer and scanner have already been “replaced with a comparable system,” Tewahade said.

The IT department will be submitting the amount for the replacement to Grant for an insurance claim, Burk said. Tewahade and Burk said the computer and scanner together is estimated about $1,500.

General assembly brings Student Government together Justine Stone News Editor Students, CAB representatives, and student senators met Tuesday to discuss student retention, student enrollment, campus improvement, and other campus issues.

Each of Senate’s committees reported what they have been working on so far this semester and what they plan to do for the back half of the semester.

Campus Improvement Committee chairperson Stephanie Alfred reported that the committee has completed two main projects this year: water bottle filling stations around campus and bathroom changing stalls in Kent Hall. The committee has also worked on campus recycling.

The recycling bins will arrive at campus soon, she said. The committee’s main project for the spring is to expand the food pantry for students on breaks. The committee hopes to partner with Northwest Community Action Partnership for the food pantry.

Constitutional Review Committee chairperson Curtis Stevens said the committee is working to improve how the constitution is written and how student government operates. “Gender identity” was added to the non-discrimination clause, freshman can now vote immediately when they are voted into Senate, the attendance policy for senators and officers is being improved, powers between executive board and Senate are being adjusted, and the relationship between CAB and Senate is being improved.

Other changes include clarifications and fixing grammar and usage errors. The committee hosts open forums to discuss constitutional changes in the Senate office at 4 p.m. every other Thursday. There is an open forum today.

The Spring Daze Committee chairperson Katrina Hurley said the committee is hosting the Spring Daze event on April 28-30 so there is an activity that is not alcohol centered. The Nearly Naked Mile will be part of the event on April 28, and the Party at the Pavillion will be on April 29. For the final day, right now, they have

56 planned booths but plan to organize a few more this week. The event will include nearly every building on campus.

Activity Fee Board Secretary Nathaniel Brown said they revised their bylaws through Senate this year. The main change in the bylaws is that clubs can fundraise but if it exceeds the seed money, the club has to return it but can keep the profit. He also congratulated the clubs because this was the first year AFB had few late budget packets. AFB hearings for club budget packets are today, tomorrow, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

CAB Chair Stephanie Steele said that nominations for CAB executive board start in April. Steele said CAB is providing funding for clubs to host booths during the circus hosted on April 9.

Attendees discussed ways to improve the student retention rate at CSC. Senior Director of Student Affairs Pat Beu said that CSC’s retention rate is about 65 percent and that “isn’t a bad rate.” Some students expressed that some reasons students do not stay in Chadron is because there aren’t enough activities and there are issues with academics.

Students said there should be more of a variety of food services on campus and that Senate should look into getting franchises or a grocery store where students can use bonus bucks to buy food. Students suggested that the school looks

into reevaluating their contract with CSC Dining Services to allow more options on campus.

Concerns from students include professors needing to analyze their teaching styles, lack of effective email communication, the library being closed on Saturdays, the coffee shop set up, Wi-Fi, lack of activities for students on and off campus, classes not transferring to other colleges, students feeling uncomfortable in the tutoring center, and lack of advertisement for events on campus.

Director of Student Affairs and Student Activities and Recreation Chris Green said he is looking into a smartphone application for students that would show all the activities happening on campus.

Ideas to improve student retention at CSC include offering students perks at businesses in town if they use their student ID, cooperating with a business in town to make a mini golf course, and encouraging students to enjoy the outdoor areas around Chadron. Career and Academic Planning Services Director Deena Kennell and Green are working with Chadron Chamber of Commerce and Dawes County Tourism on improving the relationship between the college and community.

Kennell said to email studentconcerns@csc. edu with any academic concerns.

Ideas to improve the student enrollment rate are updating the school’s website (csc.edu), clubs hosting booths during signing days, events during signing days, events on the weekends, have students of each major speak one-on-one with prospective students, create promotional videos of CSC, and having prospective students spend the night in the dorms as part of the tour.

BRIEFS First-year, senior students academic survey available An annual survey for first-year and senior students has been emailed to students in their EagleMail last month. The National Survey of Student Engagement is a survey that is coordinated

by Indiana University, Bloomington, that focuses on five major themes: academic challenge, learning with peers, experiences with faculty/staff, high impact practices, campus environments. Not all freshmen and seniors are qualified for the survey, but those who are were emailed with a link to the survey. The survey results are used to improve undergraduate programs at CSC.

Petitions for senatorial positions including at large, school, and residence hall senators; and executive board positions are due March 23 to Chief Justice Coy Clark. In order to become Senate vice president, the student must have spent at least half a term, or one semester, on Senate and one full term, or two semesters, for president.

Student Senate allocated no more than $2,000 for Free Movie Night and no more than $1,500 for Free Bowling Night.

Senate allocated $100 for Table Tennis Club to buy supplies.

Table Tennis is a new club this semester. They originally asked for $346.70 but the protocol that Senate follows is to allocate $100 for new clubs and the clubs will then ask for more through the AFB hearings for next year. Senate will vote on the budget packets after the hearings.

Table Tennis has already submitted a budget packet for the AFB meetings that are scheduled for this week and next.

Senate allocated no more than $1,500 to help bring Navy Seals to campus.

The regularly scheduled CAB meeting was changed this week to allow for the student government general assembly.

The general assembly is supposed to happen within two weeks, per the constitution, after midterm break and because Senate President Katrina Hurley will be gone next week, the meeting was Tuesday night.

CAB Chair Stephanie Steele, in her committee report, reminded CAB representative that nominations for CAB executive board will open in April. She also reminded representatives that if they wanted to host a booth during the circus that will be on campus April 9, CAB will provide funding. Clubs just need to talk to a CAB executive member or email Steele at stephanie.steele@ eagles.csc.edu for funding.

Eight businesses have committed to donating to Spring Daze.

The Bank of the West, Norwesca, and Morfords signed up for sponsorships. Norwesca and the Bank of the West signed up to host booths. Senate President Katrina Hurley said they will only take 60 booths for Spring Daze because there will only be space along the sidewalks for about 60 booths.

The Campus Improvement Committee placed new changing stalls in the Kent Hall restrooms.

The Constitutional Review Committee will host an open forum in the Senate office at 4 p.m. today.

Student Senate approved the Campus Improvement Committee bylaws.

Senate is working with the print shop to hang up posters during Scholastic Day around campus that are against drunk driving.

Mari Sandoz Center Museum Director Sarah Polak apologized for her “unprofessional behavior” at the last meeting she attended. Polak said she will work with Senate so the Mari Sandoz Center can work with and support Senate activities.

e probably don’t need to tell you that last week was midterm break so we had time off, time away from classes, maybe time away from Chadron. Whatever it was, we hope you had an enjoyable break.

It’s important to remember that even though we had that glorious week away from normal class routines, there were people on campus still working.

If you were away from Chadron, you might not have known that it rained unexpectedly Monday, March 7, and this un-forecasted rain in conjunction with construction and repairs at a few buildings resulted in flooding.

Outside Old Admin, there were downspouts removed to be replaced after years of leaking. The construction company removed the downspouts and a section of gutter to fix them, but before replacing them, the company’s machinery broke down and they have yet to finish the job.

Three rooms in Old Admin were flooded because of the untimely circumstances. Rooms 331, 241, and 131 were affected. Room 131 is a computer lab. As we’re sure you can imagine, rain and computers usually don’t mix well, but thankfully only one computer and scanner were lost in the incident.

This was a result of the custodial staff on campus cleaning up the water from the carpet.

How many of us walk around campus and don’t give a second thought to how the rooms are always clean when we show up in the mornings? We assume the trash cans digest the garbage, that the dirt on the floors is swept away by fairies, and the bathrooms are always stocked and cleaned by the those magical scrubbing bubbles.

The custodial staff on campus is always here working. They are like our moms at home who clean up after us, and they never ask for any recognition.

But they deserve it more than most on campus.

So to the custodial staff, The Eagle would like to express our appreciation for your hard work in keeping this campus functioning. There are many nights we are working late in the newsroom and you have been more than helpful to us.

The next time you see someone on the custodial staff working to clean up after you and your friends, just say thanks. It’s a simple word, but it can go a long way.

And maybe if you want to push yourself even further, help them out by simply making sure the trash is in the can, any spills are cleaned up, or even take a broom and sweep up excess dirt or mud that comes off your shoes.

Hang up the phone, see the world Janelle Kesterson Opinion Editor

It is impossible to go out in public without seeing at least one person whose nose is but inches away from a cell phone.

And we have all heard it a thousand times: “The millennials are engrossed by technology and it is going to ruin them.”

However, the members of Generation X and beyond continue to absorb themselves with the latest gossip on Facebook, the newest joke on Twitter, and the hilarious video they just posted to their Snapchat ‘my story’.

No matter what your personal opinion may be, our society is addicted to technology. The first response to a lost cell phone is a sense of panic. We feel helpless and lost without having the option to reach out for help, or the ability to scroll through Facebook when we get bored.

Social media and technology have such a grasp on society today because they provide an instant gratification that is unlike any other. We can be sitting alone at home and post something on Twitter. Within seconds, this post may already have a like or a retweet.

If we put a picture on Instagram it may only take a few minutes for five or 10 people to double tap it and give it a heart.

These “likes” or “favorites” give us a sense of gratification that we are accepted and that the people around us on social media actually care about our lives. Not only that, but

we can paint ourselves as whatever we want to be on social media.

A person can be extremely sad, but post a happy picture on the web to prove to the online world that they are happy with his or her life. There is no personal interaction. Nobody to notice an emptiness in the voice of somebody that could really need to talk.

Society has become driven by the things that will get us the most likes and favorites on the web. But what happens when we unplug?

We see people around us who haven’t. We go to the coffee shop and see the guy sitting at the table next to us looking at his or her phone and the first instinct is to reach for our own. We wait in line for lunch and want something to do besides stare awkwardly at the people around us, so we want to bury our face in our phone.

It has gone so far that we will sit at a table full of friends and all stare at our phones.

Money plus hard work equals happiness Preston Goehring Sports Editor College students across the nation commonly struggle with the same issue. No, not the freshman 15, but the lack of money. Whether you don’t have time for a job, or just spend it as soon as the check is cashed, complaints about money problems are common to college students.

Money is a necessity in life. Whether you want to admit it or not, there aren’t many things that you can do without it. Obviously you cannot buy your family or friends, but the argument can be made that money can buy happiness.

Happiness can be found all over the place, but in my case, a lot of my hobbies that I enjoy cost money. Whatever you enjoy to do, odds are that it costs money. The point is that money is an important part of everyone’s life.

The problem is that in today’s society, people are unwilling to work hard for their money, or think that they are entitled to it. There are three unalienable rights granted to every human; life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Note that it is the pursuit of happiness, not just happiness. And as I previously stated, happiness usually costs money.

The pursuit is going to be filled with a lot of work, probably even more failure, and hopefully with a little luck, success.

One of the most angering things in my opinion, is that there are some people in society that are shaming wealthy individuals. If it’s an-

ger, or jealousy, they are chastising the wealthy.

Now, there are some people in the high class that have had their entire life handed to them. I am not talking about those people. I am talking about the ones that started with next to nothing, took risks, and worked endless hours to get where they are today.

Instead of shaming these people, next time look at what they have done to get to that point in their life. Instead of sitting around and waiting for someone to hand you success, get out and do something for yourself. Take a risk, accept and learn from failure, and put yourself in a position to be happy. Whatever you find happiness in, get to that point in your life that it can be an everyday occurrence, not a luxury.

So the next time your friend or roommate skips out on “Call of Duty” or “Madden” to go to work, instead of complaining or begging them to stay, keep in mind that they might have a goal that they are working toward. It might just be paying rent, or buying a new car, but if they are working hard and earning their money, hold your tongue, and think about something that you want, and can’t afford. Maybe if you put your head down and work long hours on top of school, someday you’ll get there.

With all of this happening around us it is almost impossible to get away from the technology addiction, but here is a charge for everyone: Put your phone down and see what you can notice. Just try it for a day. Maybe make a pact with your friends and promise to all spend time with each other without using cell phones.

Walk down the sidewalk and smile at every person you see instead of avoiding eye contact by staring at a screen and the response will be positive. The only thing stopping us from interacting with each other is the notion that we have created ourselves that it is too terrifying to have a conversation with a stranger.

You will be amazed by the people you can meet and the things you can observe when a phone screen isn’t the first thing in reach.

Saint Patrick, the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland, is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland. He is known for his two short works: the “Confessio,” a spiritual autobiography, and his “Letter to Coroticus,” a denunciation of British mistreatment of Irish Christians.

During his childhood, he was kidnapped and sold into slavery in Ireland. During the time he spent in slavery, he converted to Christianity. Once he was freed, he spent the rest of his life teaching the Irish about the Christian faith.

St. Patrick wasn’t made a saint until hundreds of years after his death, but by the end of the 7th century, St. Patrick had become a legendary figure. As can be expected, the

legends grew, and have continued to grow.

One of these legends is that St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland, into the sea and their destruction. Another popular legend is that of the shamrock. The story goes that St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity, three persons in one God, to an unbeliever by showing him the three leaves connected by one stem.

To this day, Irishmen wear shamrocks in their lapels on St. Patrick’s Day. The shamrock is also the national flower of Ireland.

Today, St. Patrick is seen as the man who brought a day of good times and green beer to pubs across the world. Each year, March 17 is set aside to honor the life of the saint.

Little green men The belief in leprechauns stems from the Celtic belief in fairies, which are tiny men and women who can use their magical powers to serve either good or evil.

Leprechauns are also known as the wee folk and stand approximately 2-3 foot tall. They are devious, quick-witted characters and will do anything to evade capture. If they are captured by a human, they have to grant three wishes before they can be released.

According to Celtic folklore, leprechauns are cranky fairies responsible for mending the shoes of the other fairies. Leprechauns are only minor figures in Celtic folklore, but they are known for being especially tricky.

The leprechauns use their trickery to protect their fabled treasures of gold. According to legend, there is a pot of leprechaun gold at the end of every rainbow.

Brent Bargen and Tim Connealy have resigned from their positions as head men’s and women’s basketball coaches, respectively, Athletic Director Joel Smith announced Tuesday. Both resignations will be effective June 30.

As head coach at CSC, Bargen owns a 78-186 re co rd .

In his 10 years with the Eagles, he has coached 10 AllR M A C Brent Bargen athletes, two academic all-conference players, and nine honor roll athletes. Throughout his coaching career, he has coached nearly 40 players that have gone on to play at the professional level.

Bargen, a Nebraska native, played for Doane College, Crete, and started for two seasons. He helped lead the Tigers to a Nebraska-Iowa Conference Championship.

He has coached at levels ranging from high school, to D-I. As an assistant at Kansas State University, Manhattan, the team reached the NCAA Tournament in 1996 and the National Invitational Tournament in 1998 and

Women’s Rodeo TEAM:

1999. While an assistant at Long Beach State University, Long Beach, California, the team led D-I in scoring, averaging 83.7 points per game.

Connealy has been the lead man for the women’s basketball team for eight seasons. During his tenure at CSC, he accounted a record of 58-112. He worked as a graduate assistant at the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 2004, and then as an assistant coach in 2006. In his first season at CSC, he helped lead the Eagles Tim Connealy 11-16.

He has won the fourth most games at CSC. He coached All-American, Kaitlin Petri in 2012, just the second in school history, along with nine all-conference players, six academic all-Americans, and a large number of players on the conference honor roll. In 2010 and 2011, the Eagles were ranked No. 2 in the nation for team GPA. In 2010, the team’s GPA was 3.641.

A Chadron native, Connealy also played two seasons for the Eagles.

Messages to Bargen and Connealy went unanswered.

A national search to fill both positions will be conducted, according to Smith.

Michel hit .583 over the four-game weekend.

She accounted for two home runs, a double, and a 1.167 slugging percentage. She earned seven hits and drove in two runs. Michel is currently hitting .385 for the season with six homers and 14 RBIs.

Reuwsaat won the long jump at the D-II National Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 11. She is the first female individual national champion in school history. Reuwsaat won the event with a jump of 6.21 meters (20 feet 4 1/2 inches).

Reuwsaat brings home gold from national championships William McLaughlin Reporter The Chadron State track and field team concluded its strong indoor season with nine athletes traveling to the NCAA D-II Indoor Track and Field Championships at Pittsburgh State University, Pittsburgh, Kansas. Long jumpers Stachia Reuwsaat, junior of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Damarcus Simpson, sophomore of Lafayette, Georgia, and led the way finishing first and second, respectively in their events.

On the women’s side, six athletes traveled to the national meet. Four of them being in the 4x400 meter relay. Reuwsaat paved the way for the weekend, taking home first place honors in the long jump.

She jumped 20 feet, 4 1/2 inches on her fifth attempt to seal her first national championship. Reuwsaat’s second and third best jumps of 20-1 and 19-8 1/2 also helped her lead nearly the entirety of the event.

She is CSC’s first female individual champion in an NCAA sport.

“Stachia deserved this,” Head Coach Brad Gamble said. “She worked hard all (indoor) season to get here and it finally paid off.”

Reuwsaat’s performance would not be the only memorable one. Shelby Bozner, senior of Rock Springs, Wyoming, finished second in the women’s pentathlon scoring 3,899 points, a school record. Bozner scoring high in every event on Saturday. She won the 60 meter hurdle to open things up and finished second in the 800.

Salcia Slack, graduate of Kingston, Jamaica, of New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas, was the only on to beat Bozner.

The women’s 4x400 relay team placed seventh running 3 minutes, 45.77 seconds. The time is a season best and indoor school record. This group is the first women’s relay team to earn All-American honors in the program history. The team

consisted of Bozner; Nikki Glasson, senior of Wheatland, Wyoming; Kelsy Wood, junior of Hemingford; and Tiffany Thomas, senior of Kingston, Jamaica.

On the men’s side, three athletes competed at the national meet but Simpson would be the only one to score and bring home All-America honors. The other athletes who qualified were Zerek Jones, senior of La Junta, Colorado, in the 800; and Andre Woodson, junior of Sacramento, California, in the 60.

Jones ran the 800 in 1:52.28, finishing 12th in the nation in D-II indoors. His time was just three hundredths of a second behind to earn a spot in the finals and guarantee All-American honors.

Simpson mirrored his 2015 performance at the indoor national meet placing second in the long jump and sixth in the 60 for the second straight year. Simpson’s long jump did not come together until finals.

Coming into the weekend he was ranked No. 2 nationally, but going into finals was

seeded No. 4. Simpson jumped his personal best on his sixth and final jump, going 25-11, putting him in the lead. Simpson seemed like the winner, until the last jump

by Sedeekie Edie, sophomore of Kingston, Jamaica, of Lincoln University, Lincoln, Missouri. Edie leapt 26-1 3/4 to take home first place honors.

Simpson fared well in the 60 running 6.751 on Friday to assure himself a spot in the finals on Saturday. Simpson ran 6.79 the next day to earn sixth for the second straight year. Simpson now has five career All-American performances on his resume as an Eagle.

In final team scoring, the women finished 10th with 20 points, a program record. The men totaled 11 points to finish 20th.

The Eagles will open their outdoor season on Thursday, March 24 at Black Hills State University, Spearfish, South Dakota, and Friday, March 25 at Colorado School of Mines, Golden.

Eagles fall in 3 conference games, win 1 Jay Feltson

The Eagles managed to split against the ThunderWolves but couldn’t find a way to win against the Roadrunners. The Eagles Reporter scored 17 runs during the weekend, 11 against the ThunderLast weekend the CSC softball team traveled to Colorado Wolves in their first game.

In the first game of the weekend, the Eagles faced the State University-Pueblo, to play RMAC opponents CSU-Pueblo Roadrunners in what started off as an easy day for the Eagles ThunderWolves and the Metropolitan State University- Denver Roadrunners. The Eagles lost both games against Metro (8-3, with Rebekah Anthony, senior of Monument, Colorado, hit a home run in the first inning and Taylor Bauer, junior of 2-0) and split agianst CSU-P (11-2, 6-3).

Rapid City, South Dakota, also hitting a homer in the third inning while the Roadrunners remained scoreless.

The score remained 2-0 in CSC’s favor until the top Western of the sixth inning when the Roadrunners’ second Community Health baseman Cassidy Smith, junior of Loveland, ColoResources rado, managed to score a 3-run homer giving the Roadrunners the lead. a graduate student of Colorado Springs, Colorado, also hit an RBI in the same inning to put the Eagles ahead 3-0. The Eagles managed to score eight more runs before the fifth inning came around. After both teams went scoreless in the first inning, the game was ended after the fifth, giving the Eagles their first win of the weekend 11-2.

The Eagles again tried to knock off the ThunderWolves the next day, the Eagles could not score a run until the fifth inning when they finally managed to score two RBI’s, but only allowed the ThunderWolves to score once in the previous four innings, going through a scoring drought. The ThunderWolves responded in the sixth inning by hitting five RBI’s to push the lead for the Eagles who went scoreless in the top of the inning and only scored one RBI in the seventh inning.

In the final game of the weekend, the Eagles looked to get revenge on the Roadrunners and finished the weekend 2-2 by picking up a win and ending the trip on a high note. This game didn’t have a lot of scoring, the only RBI’s of the game were scored in the second inning by Smith who pitched, despite being a second baseman in the first game. The Eagles had a total of 25 at bats but could only produce four hits none of which were RBI’s, the Eagles went on to lose the game to the Roadrunners 2-0.

The Eagles will return home for a four-game weekend against Adams State University, Alamosa, Colorado, at noon and 2 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday.

Men’s rodeo team ropes big win in Torrington Janelle Kesterson Opinion Editor The Chadron State College men’s and women’s rodeo teams began the Central Rocky Mountain Region’s spring rodeo circuit on a strong foot this weekend at the Eastern Wyoming College rodeo in Torrington.

Chadron State’s Prestyn Novak, sophomore of Newell, South Dakota, and Clayton Van Aken, graduate student of Descanso, California, finished first and second in the all-around cowboy standings, respectively.

“I hope to keep the ball rolling and to carry the success into the remainder of the spring rodeos,” Novak said. “I had high expectations and drew the right stock to win on and made use of them. My team roping partner did a great job on his end and made my job a lot easier. I need to keep practicing hard to give myself a chance at making the college finals.”

Aken earned runner-up, making runs of 9.3 seconds and 10.5 in the first round, respectively, and runs of 10 flat for both in the second go. Van Aken was also the header for the winning entry in team roping, and Novak heeled for the second place entry. Novak put 310 points on the board and Van Aken had 300 in the all-around standings.

“Honestly it was a relief to do well with Trey (Yates, junior of the University of Wyoming, Laramie, Wyoming) at the first (rodeo) thus spring. We had heck this fall and both didn’t really have much luck,” Van Aken said.

“It was a much needed win. Trey did a great job. I was riding a new horse and honestly didn’t know what was going to happen. The calf roping was a little different. I have been south rodeoing and working on the team roping, and the calf roping has taken a back seat. I just tried to get them tied down. My goals are to do the best I can with what we draw. I have a great partner so I just have to do my job. I

want to keep the horses sharp and just keep staying focused.”

Justin Kissack, junior of Gillette, Wyoming, placed high in the bareback riding, scoring 67 points and placing third in the first go-round and earning 64 points to take second place in the second go, putting him first in the average.

Also in the bareback riding, Nate McFadden, senior of Elsemere, had a no-score in the first go-round, but put the high score of the weekend on the board in the second go-round with 73 points, putting him sixth in the average.

In the steer wrestling, Devin Dibbern, freshman of Riverdale, had runs of 6.1 and 6.9 to put him fourth in both go-rounds and third overall. And in the bull riding, Chasen Cole, sophomore of Hermosa, South Dakota, won the first go with 81 points to get him to the finals. He had a no-time in the finals but place second in the average.

The men’s team scored an impressive 815 points to win the championship by more than

400 points, putting their team score at 3,095 points on the year. The CSC cowboys have 887.5 points more than the runner-up team, Eastern Wyoming College.

The Chadron State cowgirls also found success in Torrington, placing in goat tying and breakaway roping.

In the goat tying, Brandi Cwach, sophomore of Geddes, South Dakota, won the average after winning both go-rounds with times of 7.0 and 7.1. Shelby Winchell, graduate student of Scottsbluff, had times of 7.6 and 7.3, placing third and second in the first and second go, respectively. She placed third in the average.

Elsie Fortune, freshman of Interior, South Dakota, had runs of 3.2 and 3.4 in the first and second go, respectively, to finish fourth in the breakaway roping average.

The Chadron State rodeo team will travel to Gillette College this weekend for the next rodeo in the Central Rocky Mountain Region.

AD announces new head volleyball coach Preston Goehring Sports Editor Athletic Director Joel Smith announced the hiring of Riann Mullis, as head coach of the volleyball team Monday.

Mullis, formerly the head coach at Cowley College, Arkansas City, Kansas, spent five years with the Tigers, three as an assistant, and earned a total record of 167-29, 56-22 as the head coach.

“Riann will begin on April 11,” Smith said. “Riann was prepared, enthusiastic, and ready to build a Division II program.

She will be a great fit for CSC and the Chadron community.”

Mullis helped lead the Tigers to two NJCAA Champi-

onships, a runner-up, and in her first year as head coach, the team finished third at the national championships. As head coach, she led the team to two conference and district championships.

Mullis said one of the draws to CSC was the growth of the athletic program and that she is excited to be a part of that growth.

Her accolades also include being named the American Volleyball Coaches Association Two-Year College Assistant Coach of the Year in 2012, and the Co-Coach of the Year for the East Division of the Jayhawk Conference in 2014.

Mullis also said some challenges could be the switch to

NCAA D-II from NJCAA as well as recruiting.

“The big difference is CSC is NCAA, it is different than what I am used too,” Mullis said. “Recruiting could be a challenge because the rural location makes it difficult to bring in athletes.”

The Eagles finished last season with a 9-17 record, 8-10 in conference play. Chris Wells, former head volleyball coach, resigned from the position following the 2015 season. In two years with CSC, one as the interim head coach, the Eagles were 12-41.

“My goal is a winning season,” Mullis said. “I want to be over .500 for winning percentage. Chadron State has the talent, I just need to provide the structure.”

Golfers begin spring season in AZ Preston Goehring Sports Editor The CSC golf team started its spring season at the Fort Hays State University Spring Thaw in Mesa, Arizona. The Eagles finished 10th place with a total team score of 706 with the help of freshman Sam Rahmig, of Gering, and Schuyler Wetzel, senior of Hot Springs, South Dakota.

Colorado Mesa University, Grand Junction, won the tournament with a team score of 623.

Rahmig carded a first round 80 followed by a 94 in the second. Rahmig’s previous best 18-hole score was an 81.

Wetzel struggled in the first round, tallying 90 strokes,

but was able to rally in the second round, scoring an 84.

Both Rahmig and Wetzel tied for 31st place.

Senior Emma Harris, of Wahoo, grabbed 41st place scoring a two-day total of 180. Kelly Haynes, sophomore of Whitney, finished one stroke behind, with a 181.

Sophomore Mikayla Gallagher, of Lead, South Dakota, and Karson Langley, sophomore of Sidney, finished with scores of 184 and 195, respectively.

Winona State’s Katya Hoffman, senior of Cookeville, Tennessee, won the individual title with a score of 148.

The Eagles will be back in action March 28-29, at the Hart Ranch, in Rapid City, South Dakota. CSC is cohosting the event with South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

Traveling art show comes to CSC Sarah Townsend Lifestyles Editor The Sheldon Museum of Art exhibit “The Romance of the Moon: Science Fiction Invades Art,” opened at CSC’s Memorial Hall’s Main Gallery Feb. 29.

The Sheldon Art Museum was founded in 1888 and holds more than 12,000 artworks.

The artwork is of a variety of different mediums and is located on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The museum coordinates an educational outreach program which presents works from the museum’s collection and teaches the importance of arts.

The pieces in this show are from a number of artists from many different backgrounds.

However, the theme of the show feels like something straight out of a science fiction novel.

The range of mediums adds to the variety and shows that anything from a still photograph to an oil painting can portray an otherworldly feel.

One specific piece, “Judy on the Beach,” a color screen print done by Kenny Scharf in 1987, seems to jump out from the wall with bright colors and abstract shapes. The piece is both colorful and interesting, but not too busy. This is the brightest piece of the group and looks like a cartoon drawing. It was cre-

ated while the nuclear arms race was at it’s peak and the fear of doom comes out with the large pink mushroom cloud.

Another interesting highlight from the group of artwork is “Small Worlds III (Kleine Welten III). (from Small Worlds (Kleine Welten)).” This color lithograph, done by Wassily Kandinsky in 1922, shows a different viewpoint of the world. It seems to portray many different universes and each one being unique and completely itself.

“Starwatcher VIII,” a color silk screen created in 1998 by Moebius (Jean Giraud), lends another take on the show’s theme.

This piece is actually in the form of a graphic novel page and because Moebius was such an influential member of the illustrators in the 20th century, this piece is a must-see.

The Starwatcher character is as his name portrays, an observer.

The exhibit will be open until March 29, is free and open to the public from 9 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Along with the display, the Sheldon Museum offered a free art education workshop Wednesday, March 2 that featured practical connections with classroom objectives and take-home resources. A public talk followed the workshop.

The workshop was led by specialists in museum education, art and curriculum and helped workshop attendees understand and appreciate these types of artwork.
