NSCS approves new student trustee Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor The NSCS approved current Senate Chief Justice Coy Clark, 21, junior of Benkelman, as CSC’s new student trustee.

Clark will not be able to keep his position as chief justice because the constitution won’t allow him to hold two executive positions at the same time.

“I will be stepping down from my position as Chief Justice of the Student Association once elections are complete and I am closer to officially assuming the position of student trustee,” Clark said.

Clark will replace Mikayla Gallagher, junior of Lead, South Dakota, as trustee.

“The Governor made a great choice,” Gallagher said of Clark.

Treyten Nelson, of Peru State College, and Henry Miller, of Wayne State College, were also approved as student trustees for the next year. The new trustees will start their term at the May 3 meeting.

CSC’s Bruce Hoem, associate professor of coun-

seling, psychology, and social work, was selected as one of the three nominees for the Teaching Excellence Award. Peru State College’s nominee is Kelly Asmussen, professor of criminal justice, and Joe Blankenau, professor of political science, was selected from Wayne State College.

The Academic & Personnel Committee will select one of the nominees for the award, and the winner will receive public recognition and a $3,000 cash reward.

Chadron State College recommended continuing the contract with Creative Dining Services. The contract lasts until June 30, 2019. The contract calls for $96,796 plus additional operating costs per year, which is up $2,820 from 2015-2016’s rate of $93,976.

Chadron State asked the Chancellor to sign contracts to keep the following projects on schedule: campus cable TV agreement, partial West Court demolition agreement, campus wireless upgrades agreements, campus security camera install agreement, and High Rise shower upgrades change order.

The System Office and Chadron State recommend-

ed the Chancellor sign the contracts.

The System Office recommends the approval of changes to Board Policy 5010 to explain the number of hours F-1 visa students can work during the school year and during breaks. International or non-resident alien student employees who are on F-1 visas can work up to 20 hours per week during the school year and up to 40 hours per week during the summer and semester breaks.

The System Office recommends the approval of changes to Board Policy 5016 to clarify enrollment qualifications graduate assistants can have. Graduate students have to be enrolled in the graduate program and at least one three-credit hour course.

Chadron State College gave a quarterly report of its construction projects—Armstrong Gym and Rangeland Lab Building. The final report of the Armstrong Gym-Phase 1 project reported $17,142,946 in total spending. The interim report for the Rangeland Lab Building reported $3,721,892.14 in expenditures to date and shows $121,024.86 remaining of its $3,803,845 balance.

His term will begin in May. Clark will not be able to keep his position as chief justice because the constitution won’t allow him to hold two executive positions at the same time.

Clark said as chief justice per the constitution he does not have the

power to file articles of impeachment so he will no longer be filing article of impeachment for attendance problems. Clark said he will be informing Senate when senators have reached the maximum days of absences and he will leave it up to Senate to file the articles of impeachment. When senators miss two meetings, five other senators will have to sign an article of impeachment, or 10 percent of the student body can file an article.

a second absence. He also announced Senator Chelsea Holt missed her limit but he needed to check his email to see if her absences were excused.

CAB Vice Chair of Finance Molly O’Connell recommended senators come and sit in on budget hearings because they will be the ones who will eventually allocate money to the clubs at the end of the semester. She also said clubs are asking for a total of $225,000 this year.

Senator Curtis Stevens announced the Constitutional Committee has finished going through the constitu-

tion and will begin going through the bylaws next week. They will continue having open forums at 4 p.m. every other Thursday. The next open forum will be March 31.

Senior Director of Student Affairs Pat Beu said he appreciated the attendance and discussion at the general assembly last week and said that maybe next year Senate should bring in someone from the admissions office to talk about the efforts already being done to recruit and retain students.

There will be no meeting next week because of Spring Break.

BRIEFS No forum last week Every other Thursday, Senate’s Constitutional Committee has been hosting open forums to hear students’ opinions on the constitution. There was no attendance at last week’s meeting so the next open forum will be at 4 p.m. March 31.

NE tornado drill today A statewide tornado drill will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. today.

March 21-25 was designated as Severe Weather Awareness week for Nebraska. The Chadron Police Department 911 Center will alert Chadron and surrounding areas and there will be a steady 3 minute siren blast.

Author to visit CSC Jeff Kurrus, children’s book author and editor of NEBRASKAland magazine, is coming to visit CSC April 4-6. At 7 p.m. April 4, he will have a book reading of “A Tale of Jacob Swift,” and give a presentation titled “Writing with a Camera” in the Sandoz Center. At 11 a.m.

April 5, Kurrus will have an open session about nature writing and wildlife photography in Burkhiser, Room 231. At 6 p.m. April 6, Kurrus will present “Crances, Foxes, and NEBRASKAland Magazine” in Library, Room 111.

CAB nominations open in April Justine Stone News Editor Nominations for CAB executive board will begin in April. To be elected for the CAB chair, students must have served as a CAB representative for at least two semesters.

To be elected for the vice chair of programming, vice chair of relations, vice chair of records, or vice chair of finances, students must have served as a CAB representative for at least one semester.

CAB allocated no more than $263.82 to the social science club for

a gun debate. The debate will be in the Ballroom at 4 p.m. April 4.

Clubs had spent $79,893.86 and had $75,865.38 in unallocated funds at the start of the meeting. CAB had spent $10,475.07 and had $4,724.93 remaining in their account at the beginning of the meeting.

AFB will also need three new CAB members and six new at large members next fall. Vice Chair of Finances Molly O’Connell said the club budget hearings are open to the public, and encouraged CAB representatives to attend to see what the hearings are like.

CAB Chair Stephanie Steele said they will begin to require clubs to send members to other clubs’ events to increase attendance and club membership.

Free Movie Night is April 3 and Free Bowling Night is April 16.

Coy Clark will begin his term as Student Trustee in May. Director of Student Affairs and Student Activities and Recreation Chris Green told CAB representatives to discuss activities they would like to see on campus next year with their club’s members and bring ideas to the CAB meetings.

TBE staff looks for sites The Big Event staff is looking for businesses and residents in Chadron to apply to be job sites for the upcoming The Big Event.

Businesses and residents will have to apply to be selected as a job site.

The Big Event is scheduled for April 23.

Those interested can contact Shaunda French, social and communication arts assistant professor, at sfrench@csc.edu or at 308432-6302 by April 1.

Some suggestions of job site services could include painting, landscaping, gardening, or any other community-service-type project.

In the past, The Big Event has traveled outside of Chadron but will focus the attention to just Chadron this year.

“This year we want to overstaff job sites, and make sure job sites are completed in an efficient and timely manner,” French said.

Under a heavy snowfall that struck Wednesday morning, a line of cars exits the CSC campus at the Main Street entrance minutes after President Randy Rhine closed the college at 10 a.m.

Winter storm threat prompts Pres. Rhine to close campus Justine Stone News Editor A late winter storm threatening up to 9 inches of snow and wind gusts as high as 45 mph, prompted CSC President Randy Rhine to close the college at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Rhine’s announcement came by a campus-wide email from Director of College Relations Alex Helmbrecht, after heavy snows blanketed the campus early Wednesday morning.

“The closure includes the cancellation of all classes, including those in the evening, all public facilities on campus, and previously scheduled Navy SEAL presentations. However, the Student Center will remain open, so students may access food services,” Rhine stated in the email. He said the college would reopen at 7:30 a.m. today.

At 8:36 a.m. Wednesday the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning, and although the snow stopped at about 11:30 a.m., the NWS warning remained in effect until 6 p.m.

Dining Services Director Tracy Shuck said food services would observe regular hours, except the Eagle Grille Food Court would close at 7 p.m. Wednesday when the Student Center closed.

Senate President Katrina Hurley said she was working with the Navy SEALS to try to reschedule their presentations for today.

Other facilities that closed at 10 a.m. included the Reta E. King library and Book Ends coffee shop, the NPAC and The Pit. Maintenance Supervisor Todd Baumann said crews were cleaning up the snow and custodians were working in the Student Center and dormitories.

Junior Day–a recruiting effort featuring visits and campus tours from high school juniors–was scheduled from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. Wednesday. Helmbrecht contacted Admissions Director Lisa Stein who said visiting juniors on campus at the time of the closing were given the option of staying for lunch and tours or leaving. The majority stayed to eat lunch, Helmbrecht said.

The snow and high winds made driving hazardous and road conditions were expected to worsen throughout the day.

Evan L. Brooks Reporter It is amazing to think about the impact that one individual can have on your life. Even more incredible is when they can do so without even knowing of your existence; it is amazing that someone can walk the streets on any given day, and somewhere in another city, state, or country a child has developed a passion because of what they do. This is the type of relationship that began forming when I was just 4 years old and the then 18-year-old Kobe Bryant began his professional basketball career.

For almost as long as I can remember, Kobe Bean Bryant has been a force in the National Basketball Association (NBA). And for just as long, I have admired his playing style and his passion for the game. If you asked 10 players around the league who the hardest working player in the NBA was, all 10 would respond with, “Kobe Bryant.”

These are the things I watched. His effort when the arena was empty came to light when it was filled with fans. Year by year, Kobe progressed until he found himself being called the best player in the league. This, too, I watched.

I watched as he was forced to take his cape off for a moment in 2003 and deal with sexual assault allegations, a time that showed me Kobe wasn’t just the mythical hero I thought he was, but rather quite human. Just 24 years old at the time, his handling of the situation was admirable, and when a settlement was reached, I watched an emotionally battered basketball player bounce back like only he could—by excelling even more on the court.

In seasons following, I saw Kobe set records that will likely stand for decades, if not forever, such as his 81-point game.

To list a couple more of his many accolades, he also added two more rings to

his list of championship titles and earned a regular season MVP award.

As I reached my teenage years, I wanted more and more to be like this guy­—at least on the court. I changed my number to 24 and stuck with it until the end of my college career. Although I could never compare myself to a player like Kobe, I’d be lying if I said that putting jersey No. 24 on my back didn’t give me a sense of confidence; an idea that I was going to do something special each time I stepped on the floor.

In 2013, after single-handedly propelling the Los Angeles Lakers to another playoff appearance, Kobe suffered a torn Achilles tendon, an injury that most deemed career-ending. Again, I watched my idol become human. With tears in his eyes, I watched Kobe tell reporters that he would be back. I wasn’t even sure if he believed it, but knowing this stranger as well as I did, I had no doubt about his return.

Upon his return came the realization that his years and mileage in the NBA were catching up to him. Kobe showed flashes of his old self, but he and all of his fans knew the time was near, and shortly after the start of the 2015-16 season, his 20th season in the league, the announcement was made. Kobe Bryant was set to retire at the end of the season. This time, rather than watch, I read as a poem entitled ‘Dear Basketball,’ written by Kobe, was published on The Players’ Tribune.

The poem was his way of saying goodbye to the game.

I always used to say I was going to

cry the day Kobe retired, but I never was sure if I was joking or being serious. I learned quickly that I couldn’t be more serious. I read Kobe’s poem aloud to my mother and found my voice cracking more with each stanza, using every ounce of ‘tough guy’ in my body to hold back my tears. The following day, I read her a letter written to Kobe by a Boston Celtics (longtime Lakers’ rivals) fan. The content of the letter was incredible. This fan wanted Kobe to know that despite all the hate he’s held for him over all these years of him being in a Lakers’ uniform, he still appreciated everything Kobe has done for the game (in more words). Inevitably, I sobbed and so did my mom.

The retirement of Kobe Bryant was more to me than just a player retiring from his sport. This announcement came at the end of my college career— one which saw some success, but too many injuries to continue into a pro career as I had dreamed for all my life. So, the timing of this retirement was symbolic to me.

Kobe Bryant retiring from the game of basketball was equivalent to a piece of the game being taken away forever. Additionally, it was almost as if the end of his career meant the same for me. I’m not sure what watching basketball with the name Kobe Bryant not being repeated constantly will be like, but I know it won’t be the same.

Throughout this article, I’ve referred to Kobe Bryant casually by his first name because for 20 years I have felt like I know him. I was that kid­ —watching; wanting to be just like that guy on TV whose passion for basketball matched and likely exceeded mine.

Kobe Bryant to me is a hero, and through all of this rambling, I just wanted to use this opportunity to show my gratitude toward him for what he’s meant to basketball and the impact he’s had on my life. To me, Kobe Bryant is more than a player of basketball; he is basketball.

EDITORIAL–THE EAGLE’S VIEW

Make a commitment to your community Community service is defined as voluntary work intended to help people in a particular area. Take a second to think about that. “Work intended to help.” In what ways are you working toward a goal that helps somebody else?

Community service is a civic responsibility. It is an opportunity to give back, and help a community that supports you. Not only that, but community service can give you insight into yourself. As a volunteer, you can discover hidden talents that may change your view on your self worth, and it can help you learn about the government, or the inner workings of your own community. Understanding community needs also helps foster empathy and self-efficacy.

With all of these benefits, it is hard to justify not engaging civically. There are service projects all around, even for college students who may not feel connected to the community they live in. All it takes is a little asking around. Word of mouth is the best way to learn about opportunities.

If you find an organization that interests you, call and get information on what you can do to serve.

Volunteering also gives you an opportunity to meet new people. You can find community service projects to do with your friends, and find people that have similar interests. You can ask a friend to volunteer with you and make a difference together. It may help you expand your circle of friends while helping the community as well.

You can figure out what interests you and find a project that fits the bill. Or maybe, find a project that you never thought you would be interested in, and try it out, because college is a time to try new things.

Either way, you will be pleased about the effects that volunteering can have on your life. Try it out, and see where it takes you.

KamRon Tomlinson, 22, senior of Kansas City, Missouri, enjoyed his meal and the overall experience of learning about other cultures.

“No matter where you get food from, it’s good,” Tomlinson said. “Different meats, rices, and everything—it makes you want to experience more in life.”

Tomlinson dates an international student, and reflected on his experience in doing so by stating, “There are times you have to step back and realize that despite the difference in cultures, the communication barrier isn’t as different as people might think.”

Bergstrom said she found the event to be a complete success, claiming that they did not have a single issue in the kitchen in the nine hours they were in it.

“It was a great time getting to watch all the different ways of food preparation from different countries,” Bergstrom said. “Although the doors opened 15 minutes later than we had originally anticipated, people were astonished at how much food we had, as well as the great quality.

“Our only other issue for the evening is that the sound for the international ambassador’s video was malfunctioning at the beginning, but after that it was smooth sailing. I feel as if those who attended received a great international cultural experience.”

Bergstrom went on to say that in years to come, as different nationalities attend CSC, people can expect a showcase of more international foods. She claims, however, that they should expect the same high quality of food and entertainment.

The Chadron State track and field team dominated this indoor season, breaking a number of school records, sending athletes to nationals, and finishing in the top 25. The women’s team finished with three All-Americans.

The women were without their best thrower Mel Herl, graduate senior of Eaton, Colorado, who is redshirting this year in preparation for her final indoor and outdoor season in 2017. Herl still competed unattached as a thrower and fared well this indoor season at numerous meets, finishing in the top three in nearly every event.

Herl excelled particularly well in the weight throw, finishing eighth in the event at USA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 11 in Portland, Oregon.

“It was a great and fun experience competing at USA’s,” Herl said. “It was great to meet all those elite athletes and see how they prepare, compete and act.”

Herl was one of two athletes who finished in the top eight as an unattached thrower at USA’s in the weight throw. The other six throwers competed as professional athletes with a majority of them representing Nike.

Herl is redshirting this season in hopes

to improve her technique and strength in discus, shot put, and hammer throw for her final season in 2017, she said. Herl will still compete this coming outdoor season unattached like she did this indoor season, but said she will wait to compete until later in the outdoor season.

“The nice thing with outdoor season is it goes until late June, so I have time to train and focus on technique before I compete,” Herl said. “My hopes are to qualify for the Olympic Trials in the discus.”

Herl’s biggest focus this outdoor season will be in the discus, as she feels it is her best shot at qualifying for the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon. Currently, the standard to qualify in women’s discus is 187 feet according to the USA Track and Field website. Herl’s career best in the discus is 170.

Herl has done well for CSC as a thrower in her three years of competition. She currently holds the school’s outdoor record in the discus throw at 170. She finished fourth in the discus at 2015 Outdoor National Championships, earning All-American status.

Herl has high goals for herself going into next year and in years to come. Herl hopes to garner All-American status next indoor and outdoor season, and has her sights set on qualifying for the Olympics in 2020.

The Eagles finally separated themselves from the Grizzlies when Zoe Humphries, senior of Arvada, Colorado; Lindsey Karlin, junior of Berthoud, Colorado; and Aspen Eubanks, sophomore of of the

Broomfield, Colorado, all earned RBI’s to put the Eagles up by three runs and allowed them to cruise to the finish, winning 8-4.

The second game of the weekend saw the Eagles taking the lead easily in the top of the first inning and never looking back, eventually going on to score 11 runs in the game.

Eubanks earned six RBI’s which included two home runs. The Eagles only allowed the Grizzles to come within three runs before pushing the lead. Cosslett only allowed five hits throughout seven innings while CSC posted 10. The Eagles never felt pressure from the Grizzles and cruised to another win, 11-4.

The second day, the Grizzlies took the lead in the bottom of the first off a double to the left side of the field. But the lead didn’t last long, as the Eagles quickly tied the score at one in the top of the second inning when Eubanks hit a double to center field.

The Eagles then took the lead in the top of the fourth thanks to an RBI from Shea Graham, graduate student of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Graham ended the game with three RBI’s.

The Eagles then scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to put the game out of reach as they again cruised to the finish line with a final score of 7-2.

The Eagles walked into the last game of the weekend confident that they were going to make a clean sweep of the weekend. The Grizzlies, however, had other plans as they fought hard the whole way and pitched a shutout.

Cosslett pitched the last game of the weekend, giving up seven hits and five runs. The Eagles couldn’t capitalize on the momentum of the weekend and lost the game 5-0. With last weekend’s games in the books, the Eagles record is now 18-14-1 with a 12-8 RMAC record, which puts them in a tie for third place with the Western New Mexico University Mustangs, Silver City.

“I’m so proud of how well our season is going so far,” Eubanks said. “Everyone on the team is stepping up and together we are accomplishing some great things.”

The Eagles are scheduled to play at home this weekend against the New Mexico Highlands University Cowgirls, Las Vegas, at noon and 2 p.m.

Friday and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday.

Prairie dog: pet or pest?

CSC cowboys finish 2nd at Gillette, remain top of Region Shae Brennan Reporter The Chadron State College men’s and women’s rodeo teams added valuable points to their team standings last weekend at the Gillette College Rodeo with first place performances from Clayton Van Aken, graduate student of Descanso, California, in tie down; Justin Kissack, junior of Gillette, Wyoming, in bareback riding, and Shelby Winchell, graduate student of Scottsbluff, in goat tying.

With a time of 11 seconds flat in the long-go, Van Aken advanced to the short-go on Sunday and won the event with a time of 10.9 and leads the Central Rocky Mountain Region in tie down roping. Van Aken also added 200 points to the team’s score by placing third all-around.

Kissack contributed important points to the team by winning bareback riding and scoring 135 points. Kissack is ranked second in bareback regional standings, trailing 305 points behind Casper College’s Dylan Wahlert, junior of Kim, Colorado.

Winchell continued to benefit the women’s team by winning the goat tying with times of 7.1 and 7.6. Winchell has accumulated 900 points in the region’s goat tying standings and is 430 points ahead of second place, University of Wyoming’s Josee Vogel, sophomore of Pavillion, Wyoming.

If you take a ride with almost any rancher in Western Nebraska you will learn a fair share of knowledge. They will tell you about that drought from a few years back. They might discuss how long the land has been in the family. They will definitely tell you how many head of cattle they own. Finally, they will reference to those nuisance prairie dogs that are “taking over their pasture.” When that happens, I tend to just sneak a grin out the corner of my mouth and proceed to the next topic.

You might ask why I find this so humorous. It humors me because of the ignorance people have for this species. Any person that knows about rangelands will tell you that the prairie dog, more specifically the black-tailed prairie dog, is a keystone species. Simply defined by any source engine, a keystone species is a species on which other species in an ecosystem largely depend,

Kissack gives credit to the coaches and his teammates for his success, mentioning that the other rough stock riders are always supporting and helping him behind the chutes.

“We are always pushing each other in practice and we have a strong team, and that makes a difference. The next three rodeos I’m wanting to keep pushing myself to the next level and help get this team qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo,” Kissack said.

Winchell commented that she “couldn’t have done it without the help and support of her teammates, coaches, parents, veterinarians, and chiropractor.”

Winchell also stated that she looks forward to “making consistent runs, sticking to the fundamentals, and remaining solid” in the next three rodeos.

Although Gillette College won the rodeo last weekend, the CSC men’s rodeo team still leads the Central Rocky Mountain Region team standings with a total of 3,590 points, thanks to consistent performances from the team. In team standings, the CSC men’s team is ahead of second place Gillette by 1,155 points. The CSC women placed sixth in Gillette, adding 155 points to their 1,225 total, and stand fourth in the region out of 11 teams, behind third place University of Wyoming’s 1,465 points. Three rodeos remain this season.

Believe it or not, prairie dogs are the mold that have the ability to keep a landscape together. First, they serve as a food source for many animals. This includes foxes, coyotes, badgers, ferrets, owls, eagles, snakes, and many more species. They reproduce quickly, which provides a great predator-prey relationship. Their colonies provide habitat for many species which includes the black-footed ferret. (The black-footed ferret has become nearly extinct due to the reduction in prairie dogs.)

Their colonies also provide habitat for the burrowing owl, an interesting species that actually nests in their burrows.

Of course there is that debate on the effects that they have grazing animals.

Ranchers hate the species because they take over their pastures and can cause cattle to break their legs when the cattle

step in the burrows. However, we have to look at the positives for cattle and other rangeland species. A book called “Prairie Dog Empire” outlines the benefits this species offers. For example, positive plant diversity actually increases in the presence of prairie dogs. Better yet, the quality of plants is much higher due to an increase in nitrogen. Therefore, animals have to eat much less to get a quality meal.

In conclusion, “Prairie Dog Empire” offers some jaw-dropping statistics on historical distribution of black-tailed prairie dogs. The book uses an example from a biologist working for the U.S. Biological Survey in 1905.

The book states, “A prairie dog colony north of San Angelo, Texas, some 100 miles wide and about 250 miles long. He thought there might be 400 million animals on this single area of about 16 million acres.”

Campus horticulturist wins award for contributions Melanie Nelson Reporter Lucinda Mays, CSC campus horticulturist, received the Jim Kluck Honor Award from the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum March 4.

Although she was unable to attend the ceremony in Lincoln, Mays was recognized for her significant contributions to the Chadron affiliate of NSA. A member of NSA nominated her for the award last fall.

Other awards Mays has won include the Nebraska Forest Service Educator Award. She received this honor after a project where she, along with 500 volunteers, planted 12,000 pine trees by C-Hill after a 2006 wildfire destroyed the area’s vegetation.

Mays earned her master’s degree from CSC in May 2005, and has been working for the school ever since. Prior to that, she worked at Calloway Gardens in Georgia and did the southern segments on the PBS gardening show, “The Victory Garden.”

Mays said her job is to design garden spaces, select plants, get them established, and fix any problems they may have.

She said she has a great team that does all the “behind-the-scenes”

and “unglamorous” work.

Mays noted that Blair Brennan, CSC physical facilities project coordinator, is a big help to her work.

“What’s so important about what he does is that he gives me advance notice of where campus projects are going on,” Mays said. “It allows me to avoid or work around them until they are done.”

Starting July 2015, Mays and the grounds crew have been working on a pollinator-friendly living fence by Eagle Ridge.

The CSC Wildlife Club took out the barbed wire fence that was there, and Mays is building a plant wall to attract butterflies and other pollinators. She said the area can be used as a teaching garden, while also providing a habitat.

Another project she has coming up is reconstructing the flora by the Rangeland Complex.

“All that land was disturbed with construction, so we’re coming back and sewing in all the native grasses that should be there,” Mays said.

Mays will be recognized again for her award during Wildflower Week, June 2-4.

This is the western Nebraska NSA affiliate’s celebration, in which volunteers will be planting wild flowers by CSC’s Rangeland Lab.

Nebraska State Patrol Officers Kevin Waugh and Clint Bruhn gave a distracted driving presentation to CSC students Monday in the Student Center.

Jacob Rissler, housing and residence life assistant director, organized the event as part of Safety Day. Seven students signed in to the 1 p.m. session, and a second session was given at 3 p.m.

Officer Waugh, the main speaker, has been with the State Patrol for almost 25 years and has seen first-hand the impacts of distracted driving. He explained the numerous different causes including texting, eating, drinking, radio, pets, and many more.

the need to wear seatbelts every time you get in a car. He explained that the seatbelt is the only thing that holds a person in the upright position during a rollover, which gives them the best chance at surviving the crash.

He said there have been three fatal crashes in the Chadron area already in 2016 and none of the victims had been wearing their seatbelt, causing them to be ejected from the vehicle.

After the speech, students went outside and tried out the State Patrol seatbelt simulator. The officers belted in a volunteer then pulled a lever which sent the student down an approximately 15-foot ramp into a rubber bumper at 7-10 mph to simulate the feel of a low-impact crash.

The students were surprised at what a jolt they got from the low impact, which proved how dangerous a highspeed crash can be, especially without wearing a seatbelt.

The most frequent fatal crashes in Nebraska are single-vehicle rollover crashes, which usually are a result of distracted driving, according to Waugh.

He said it’s as simple as just briefly pulling off to take care of a distraction and then you can get back on the road.

“If the text can’t wait until you reach your destination, pull over to send a reply,” Waugh said, “Or have your passenger take care of it for you.”

Drinking and driving is a big issue.

A student asked what they should do when an intoxicated friend is trying to drive and will not accept a sober ride or turn over their keys.

“If that’s the case then I would be making a call,” Officer Bruhn said. “Some people have to learn the hard way, but better a DUI than ending up dead.”

“My favorite part of the event was trying to collect and find as many Easter eggs as possible hoping that at least one of them had a golden egg in it so I would be able to win a big prize,” Kishawn Tualaulelei, senior of Kailua Kona, Hawaii, said.

Daniel Sullivan, junior of Omaha, who also works with the RLA also commented on the event.

“I think the event went really well because we had a big turnout, people seemed to enjoy themselves and everything went as planned,” Sullivan said.

“The turnout didn’t shock me though due to the past success with the program I figured there would be a nice turnout.”
