Elections for all the positions, except for Hall senators, of Student Senate will be April 15-17. The petitions for candidacy are due at 6:30 p.m., April 1. Petitions should be hand delivered to any member of the Justice Court. There will be a mandatory meeting for all candidates at 6 p.m., April 1.

CSC is starting a marching band. The first informational meeting is at 5 p.m., today in Memorial Hall Room 104. Everyone is welcome.

If you play an instrument, are a dancer or twirler, or if you are willing to carry equipment come to the meeting to get your questions answered.

Paleontologist shares fossils with community, campus Teri Robinson Photo Editor Salvage paleontologist for the Nebraska highways Shane Tucker gave two presentations last Thursday about his job of finding and saving fossils during road constructions throughout the state.

The Natural Sciences club invited Tucker to speak with the Chadron public school’s after school program, and then a presentation to the campus and community.

For the after school program, Tucker displayed and passed around fossils found in the panhandle of Nebraska during highway constructions.

Out of all the fossils found in Nebraska, only two dinosaur fossils have ever been found. Tucker travels the state whenever construction occurs and follows the machines. If his crew finds fos-

sils, construction in that specific area of the site stops until they have cleared all fossils. Then, construction in that area can continue.

Fossils such as saber-toothed deer, giant land tortoises, baby and adult mammoth teeth, rhinos, and many more have been found throughout Nebraska.

During the open presentation, Tucker shared what led him to become a paleontologist. Since he was little, his father would take him fishing and he would look for clamshells and find fossils. Once the asphalt fossil beds opened, he would visit and watch workers. After he was in college, he worked at the fossil beds and continued from there.

Tucker said he believes he is one of two highway paleontologists in America. The other is in Colorado.

After each of his presentations, Tucker allowed the audience to look at the fossils displayed on the front table.

Campus Calm speaker discusses women leaders, self-love Teri Robinson Photo Editor Life coach, award-winning author and speaker, and president of Campus Calm, Maria Pascucci spoke to CSC women Monday night during her Women in Leadership presentation where she focused on how perfectionism can hold women in college back from their full potential.

The presentation consisted of two parts. First, Pascucci focused on perfectionism and how women focus on being perfect and don’t allow themselves to make mistakes. The second consisted of self-love and how to accomplish that.

In the first part, Pascucci went over statistics and how unhealthy being a perfectionist is. Stress, anxiety, and sleep deprivation are three issues that affect college women’s studies. Throughout the presentation, Pascucci shared personal

stories of how she dealt with perfectionism and how it worsened to the extent that she would have panic attacks, along with a dwindling diet.

Pascucci developed Campus Calm, a website for women who seek support dealing with perfectionism and to know they are not alone. The website’s motto, “Healthy, resilient women lead,” focuses on helping women relieve their stress and become confident, healthy leaders.

She also gave a list of seven steps to follow in order to overcome perfectionism and enjoy life while being a confident woman in a leadership role.

After a short break, Pascucci focused the second part of the presentation on self-love and how to accomplish it, from dealing with media portrayals of women to how women view themselves.

She showed a commercial making fun of magazines and

how they crop women’s bodies to look “perfect,” to further prove that images the media portrays are in fact not real women’s bodies.

Factors like women’s conscience and the feeling of not being able to have self-care or self-love if you don’t earn it, are part of women’s inside factors. Outside factors include the media, technology, and parents, but Pascucci noted parents are not normally to blame. Growing up, females pay attention to their parents on how women should be. Mothers portray their idea of how a female should be to their daughters, and how a father treats his wife or talks about women will also be an influence on a young woman and her views.

Overall, Pascucci gave pointers on how women can deal with perfectionism and pointed out the struggles, while offering the insight that many women, and occasionally men, deal with, and how they can find assistance.

Justice Court now full, election petitions due April 1 Jaycie Cheatham Reporter President Dillon Spies introduced Sami Schmit as the newest justice of a now full Court.

Chief Justice Coy Clark said that the Court decided it would have a rules meeting for Senate petitions at 6 p.m., April 1 and would only take petitions until 6:30 p.m. Any petitions submitted after that will not be accepted.

The petitions are available on the Student Senate page of the CSC website.

The polls for Student Senate election open on April 15 and will be open for 48 hours. As of Wednesday, Clark said a time has not be set for when the polls will be open but he said, “It will probably be open during business hours on the 15th so it will have to go into the 17th for at least part of the day to meet the 48 hour requirement.”

All senators who want to remain on Senate will have to rerun. Hall senators are elected in the fall.

Student Senate reported $46,943.25 in unallocated funds.

CAB Chair Andy Martin requested no more than $2,500 for the bongo ball tournament in correlation with the Nearly Naked Mile activities. They are now waiting for a contract from the company. The bongo ball tournament and the Nearly Naked Mile are scheduled for April 30.

Vice Chair of CAB Programming Chelsea Evans wanted to remind students that 7-10 p.m., Saturday is free bowling night.

The theme is ‘80s wear and students must bring their student IDs in order to get shoes. Deena Kennell said she will give students 80s fashion advice in exchange for chocolate.

Coordinator of Activities Laure Sinn is seeking help for the 54th Scholastic Day this Friday. Over 1,700 high school students are expected to attend. There will be free snacks and tshirts. Ft. Robinson is providing horse drawn tours, there will be the gaming trailer that was at last year’s event, and NOCS is offering dance lessons. Any students interested in helping out should meet in the Student Center at 8 a.m.

Nathaniel Jones brought to discussion a Senate volunteer opportunity with Lucinda Mays, CSC’s grounds supervisor.

Senate allocated around $1,500 last year for higher quality trees that Mays cannot afford with her budget. All 12 trees that were planted last year are doing great, Jones said.

Jones said he would bring Mays to next week’s meeting to talk more about where the trees are needed and determine a more finite budget.

Senators and advisers want to make sure that students are safe while participating in “case day” this Friday. If you are not of age, do not participate, and if you see someone who is unreasonably intoxicated, help them.

“Watch out for your friends,” said Vice President Taylor Strong.

The newly established Heart and Minds club requested $4,000 to fund their Sexual Harassment Walk on April 18.

The walk will consist of stations along a trail that will demonstrate different assault scenarios to teach students how to handle different situations.

The club needs money for t-shirts and a lunch.

The request must be approved by Senate at their next meeting before Hearts and Minds can receive the funds.

Hearts and Minds’ request brought up the proposal of a bylaw change amongst CAB members that requires clubs to present a budget before requesting allocations of more than $1,000 at the time of their request, so CAB members can view the budget before they vote on the allocation.

CAB reported $7,908.52 in unallocated funds.

NOCS will have a live band, Back Roads, 7-10 p.m., Sunday.

Tickets are $5 per person.

Blue Key National Honor Society will hold their annual dodge ball tournament at 6:30 p.m., Thursday.

A new club on campus, Land Surfers, has been established.

The Galaxy Series performer for April 24 has still not signed the contract. Evans said Conferencing Coordinator Shellie Johns hopes to have the contract signed by Friday and tickets available for sale next week. The identity of the performer will not be disclosed until the contract is signed.

I have a dream...” that all music will be treated as equal, because music is equal! I am tired of this war of genres.

I’m glad to hear Spike Jordan voice his opinion, (Head to Head: Jazz, March 19), without fearing scrutiny from his friends, but I think there are a few things he overlooked in his argument.

I agree that there are defiantly true “Jazz Nazis” out there that will rag on any type of music that doesn’t swing. However, most Jazz musicians are not as closed-minded as you have been led to believe. Just like all other genres of music, there are fast, slow, simple, and complex pieces of Jazz. Insisting that all Jazz is based on self-centered, egocentric, showing-off is itself a bit ignorant.

First off, Jazz music is very easy to understand. I think that one of the reasons Jazz is hard for some people to “get” is because unlike some genres of music, it helps your understanding of the music if you listen with attentiveness as opposed to absent-mindedness. It’s not that Jazz is incomprehensible to the general public, it just requires attention.

Secondly, Jazz is simple in structure.

There is a basic chord progression that repeats like most other styles of music. There is a written melody that is usually just as “catchy” as any pop, country, classical, or rock song. Then there is the solo section.

This might be what Spike referred to as “musical masturbation.” Jazz songs would barely make it to a minute if there wasn’t room left for improvisation. It is the most expressive part of the piece.

According to a study done by musician and researcher Charles Limb, Jazz improvisation actually uses the same part of the brain that activates when you are having a conversation.

Communication is personally my favorite part of any improvised solo. When a trombone plays an ascending line and the bass player catches it and plays a descending phrase to compliment the trombone player. Or a drummer mimics a syncopated rhythm that the saxophone just played. Or even when a soloist plays quietly and the rest of the band dynamically comes down to match them, it becomes a musical conversation. These nuances are all over jazz; the thing is you have to be actively listening to catch them. Soloists can follow the chord progression or “changes” if they want to, but honestly, there are no rules to an improvised solo. It is simply whatever the soloist “feels” at that time about the song.

I just explained how jazz works in comparison to other music in a single paragraph,

Every style of music has had an egotistical way of thinking about the “rest of the world.” They think that they are somehow separated from everyone else by being better in some way, shape, or form. You see this in other forms of art, racial segregation, and even religion.

So, what is the real difference between Greg Ginn and John Coltrane? Style. What else could there be? In the millions of songs written we know that music can sound completely different. But in reality, music has a very finite number of variables. For instance, there are only 12 notes to work with in music. Only 12. Isn’t that amazing that a million different songs have come from only 12 notes? And a million more will be written. All Music is written in the same parameters and limitations.

To say that a certain style of music is the worst music ever written is clearly naïve in the most extreme sense of the word. Not only is it insulting half the population who likes that style. It is also saying that a vast amount of the population is wrong; that you think you are smarter than the whole world.

Jazz is really no exception to this problem. I know Spike is very smart and opinionated which is why I truly believe that he doesn’t hate the entire genre of Jazz, otherwise he really wouldn’t like any music at all. I think what he really hates are a few people’s closemindedness that he’s generally associated with Jazz.

Editor’s note: After publishing last week’s article, several readers commented that references in my satire stood out as malignant toward a particular individual. I recognize how it was perceived as vindictive and apologize for any misplaced criticism. I’m sorry.

Moving on; I’ve learned over the years that vitriol usually accomplishes nothing. However, the purpose of both articles was to gain attention by being as absurd, derisive, and provocative as possible.

As I openly stated in the second paragraph of my column, my true intention was to incite a response. My goal was to spark a discussion and encourage someone with a more intimate understanding of the genre to stepforward and explain it. Rational appeals went unanswered prior to my Wednesday deadline, so I took a non-traditional approach. It worked.

As a writer, I’ve found that sometimes it’s necessary for me to be overly-absurd with my criticism. I feel that when carefully executed, the absurd can be a useful tool for breaking apathy and helps generate a more mature and reasonable conversation.

The fact of the matter: I was wrong about Jazz and this article proved that. —Spike

Optimism: The key to success Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor

In the summer and over breaks from school, I work at a daycare in my hometown.

Working there, I spend a lot of time reading books to the kids. As I’m sure you can imagine, most of the books are not that exciting or interesting or even fun to read for a 20-year-old. But, all the kids and I can always agree on Dr. Seuss books.

Theodor Seuss Geisel wrote more than 60 books in his lifetime. Some of his most famous works include “The Cat in the Hat,” “Horton Hears a Who,” “Green Eggs and Ham,” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

Seuss books are humorous and entertaining, but they also teach life lessons. Seuss was once quoted saying, “All of my books are based on truth, an exaggerated truth.”

As a kid, my favorite Seuss book was “Are You My Mother?,” and the most popular book at the daycare is “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish,” but when I was trying to find a book to write this review on, I came across a book I’ve never read: “Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?” This story is about a man who reminds a young boy, Duckie, to be thankful for all he has. This old guy is stuck in a “prickly” situation, but he was a happy guy who realizes that things could be much worse. The old man explains to Duckie multiple different situations that are “much-much, oh, ever so much-much, so muchly much-much more unlucky.”

The reason I can relate to this book, and I’m sure many other college students can relate to this story, is because sometimes we find ourselves in a “terribly prickly place.”

We think we are stuck and there’s nothing worse that can happen to us. I’m guilty of it myself as I’m sure we all are at some time in our lives.

In the past 12 months, I’ve dealt with some of the biggest struggles of my life, but I am constantly reminded that things could be worse. I am a pretty lucky person and I have a lot of good in my life. It’s not always easy to remember that, but reading “Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?” reminded me that even though my situation isn’t perfect, I should still be thankful for what I do have.

It’s easy to think “poor pity me” but if you look at the world around you, you will quickly notice that there are many other people on this earth who have struggles much worse than you, who still manage to find good in every day.

Nobody ever said life was going to be easy, but just because life isn’t easy doesn’t mean life can’t be beautiful and good. That’s the message Seuss was trying to portray in his book.

So just remember, “When you think things are bad, when you feel sour or blue, when you start to get mad…you should do what I do! Just tell yourself, Duckie, you’re really quite lucky! Some people are much more… oh, ever so much more… so muchly muchmuch more unlucky than you!”

Janelle Kesterson Lifestyles Editor The movie “Horton Hears a Who” is a movie about an elephant named Horton who just so happens to hear a Who. Now it isn’t just any Who that he hears, but a Who who he can’t see. The Who that he hears is floating by on a speck of dust.

Horton, believing that a whole family of Whos lives on the speck, places the speck of dust atop a pink, fuzzy clover. The mayor of Who-ville finds out that Who-ville will be destroyed if Horton does not find them a more stable place to live.

Horton then sets out to take the clover holding the speck of dust to the top Mount Nool, the safest place in the forest. The inhabitants of Nool and the especially strict ruler, Kangaroo, ridicule Horton, and Kangaroo sets out to make sure that Horton does not succeed in taking the clover to the mountaintop because Kangaroo does not want the children of Nool to get ridiculous ideas in their heads.

Each of the occurrences that happen to Horton on his trek to the top of Mt. Nool have catastrophic effects on Who-ville.

Towards the end of the movie, Kangaroo starts to get more frustrated with Horton, and organizes a mob to throw him in a cage. When Horton refuses to admit that Whoville does not exist, Kangaroo threatens to throw and drop the speck into a pot of boiling beezlenut oil to “teach him not to make up stories of people on specks!”

The people of Who rally and all start to yell out the drainpipe. After a heroic attempt

by JoJo, the son of the mayor, to make a noise on his invention, the Symphony-Phone, Kangaroo finally hears the Whos.

Kangaroo feels remorseful for his actions in the end, but Horton forgives her, and offers his friendship, which the Kangaroo accepts. At the end of the film, everyone helps Horton carry the speck up to the top of Mt. Nool.

Just as the people of Who-ville survive through all of the catastrophes that happen to them, we too can survive anything that is thrown our way. It is all about mindset. If you have a positive mindset then it is likely that you will be able to overcome the obstacles that are put in front of you.

Despite Kangaroo trying to stand in his way, Horton keeps persevering. In the same way, it is important for everybody to keep persevering when they have a goal that they are trying to reach.

There is no way to reach a goal if we let the ideas and ridicule of others get into our heads. We need to be more like Horton and stand firm in the resolves that we believe in.

As Horton says over and over again throughout the movie “A person’s a person, no matter how small.”

In the same fashion, it is important that we remember not to put people down for being different than us. The people in Who-ville had no idea that a universe outside of theirs existed, and the animals in the Jungle of Nool had no idea either.

Had it not been for Horton’s open-mindedness, then the eyes of the animals and Whos would have never been opened.

Everybody can learn something from the impartiality of Horton. We can all keep an open mind as we go throughout life, and you might be surprised where you can go and what you can learn. In the infamous words of Dr. Seuss himself: “Oh, the places you’ll go!”

easy ground out and two strike outs, and Eubanks finished the day with three hits, three runs, and three RBIs. The Eagles carried the momentum into Sunday, winning the first game 5-3.

Once again, CCU started the game with a 1-run lead going into the third, but then the Eagles put together three impressive innings to take control. In the bottom of the third, Taylor Bauer, sophomore of Rapid City, South Dakota, hit a single to right center, and was brought home off a home run from Courtney Lecher, sophomore of Fort Collins, Colorado.

In the fourth, Bauer hit another single to bring home Jessica Eatmon, senior of Broomfield, Colorado. The game was tied 3-3 going into the fifth, but the Eagles took the lead for good off an RBI single from Katelyn Kruger, junior of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and Polk grounded out to bring Eubanks home. Hall picked up another win, striking out seven batters.

The final game was a lopsided loss, ending in the fifth inning 15-1. The Eagles gave up 10 runs in the first inning and were never able to recover.

The Eagles play University of Colorado-Colorado Springs this weekend in two doubleheaders. First pitch is scheduled for noon, Saturday.

Reporter The Eagles’ softball team split both doubleheaders last weekend against Colorado Christian University.

The Eagles opened the weekend with an 8-3 loss, where they scored two runs in the final two innings after giving up five runs to CCU in the first. The Eagles took the second game 5-4, and Head Coach Rob Stack earned his 150th victory in the program.

After a solo home run from CCU in the fourth inning, Casey Polk, senior of Golden, Colorado, slammed a solo homer of her own to tie things up. In the next inning, CCU loaded the bases and scored on an error to go up 2-1. Stack called in pitcher Tayler Hall, junior of Windsor, Colorado, who was able to get out of the inning without giving up more runs.

“Our first game didn’t go exactly as planned,” Hall said.

“So I got a second chance to come in and shut them down. I told myself I wouldn’t lose to them twice.”

Eubanks batted .600 against RMAC rival Colorado Christian University. She finished the weekend with three RBIs off of six hits, one of which was a 3-run home run, and scored four runs. Eubanks only struck out once in the weekend’s games. Her current batting average for the season is .396.

In the first competition of the spring season, Day earned a first place finish in the tie-down roping last weekend at the Gillette College rodeo. In the first round, Day finished third with a time of 11.0 seconds. In the finals, he earned second with an 11.4, giving him first place in the average.

CSC cowboys rope the championship at Gillette College Janelle Kesterson Lifestyles Editor The Chadron State College men’s rodeo team took the championship title this weekend at the Gillette College rodeo. Three cowboys in the timed events and two cowboys in the bareback riding led the way.

The cowboys scored 680 points in Gillette, 295 more than Casper College, which bumped them to second place in the Central Rocky Mountain Regional rankings with a total of 2,250 points. The Chadron State cowboys are now just 65 points behind Gillette, the team currently leading the standings.

The rodeo was the first of the spring season in the Central Rocky Mountain Region.

Point scorers for CSC included Lane Day, senior of Bartlett, who won tie-down roping; Prestyn Novak, freshman of Newell, South Dakota, who earned second in tie-down roping; and Taz Olson, senior of Prairie City, South Dakota, who won steer wrestling.

Day roped and tied his first go-round calf in 11.0 seconds to earn third place, and

went 11.4 in the finals on Sunday to earn second. Both times earned him first place in the average.

“The rodeo season is a war of attrition.

It’s not the guy who’s on top each week that matters it’s the guy who is on top when the season ends who is the champion,” Day said.

“Our coach, Shawn (Patras), really stresses the importance of each and every run. That’s the mindset our team is really trying to live by.

The guy who is the most consistent in rodeo is generally the most successful.”

Novak tied for seventh place in the first goround with a run of 11.8, but came back with a second run of 11.2 to win the go-round and finish second in the average.

Olson placed second in the first goround with a time of 6.1 and wrestled his second steer in 5.9 to win the final go-round and the average.

“I plan on just keeping the ball rolling and trying to be consistent to finish out the rest of the year,” Olson said. “My expectations are to go out and do the best of my ability to make the short-go again.”

Wyatt Clark, graduate student of Wellfleet, was runner-up in the first go-round of bareback with a score of 75 points and tied for third place in finals with a score of 68 points.

Nate McFadden, senior of Elsmere, placed third in both go-rounds with scores of 69 and 68 points, and he finished third in the average.

“The next rodeo I want to improve on my third place and get a win in Torrington, and just keep getting as many points as possible for my team,” Nate McFadden said. “For the rest of the season I’m going to keep a positive attitude and keep having fun!”

Jeff Cover, junior of Ashby, added 48 to the team score by placing sixth in the saddle bronc riding.

There were three Chadron State cowgirls that finished fifth at Gillette.

Amy Deichert, senior of Spearfish, South Dakota, finished fifth in barrel racing after winning the first go-round in 14.26, and running 14.56 in her second go-round. Deichert also finished seventh in goat tying in 8.2 and 8.6.

“My expectations are always high, a big aspect of the mental game is always having confidence going into the rodeo,” Day said.

“I’m especially working on staying healthy this week preparing for Torrington. I also have big expectations for our team, this is the best team I have ever been apart of here in Chadron. Every single guy I feel has bought into our coaches philosophies for success. We have been putting in more hours in the arena, and the weight room this offseason compared to past seasons, and by winning the team title this past weekend I feel it shows we are reaping the benefits of our labors.”

“This week I am just going to keep perfecting my riding and working on the basics and staying in the gym everyday,” Nate McFadden said.

Unique exhibit allows visitors a look into a different lifestyle Sandoz display brings a new meaning to the word ‘cowboy’ Hannah Clark Web Editor When I think of a “cowboy,” I think of fairskinned John Wayne, straddling a long-legged horse and saving a blonde starlet. I do not think of the faces currently lining the walls of The Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center. I do not imagine that their tobacco smiles and traditional hands worked in Texas as recently as the 1970s. When I think of “cowboy,” I do not imagine “Vaquero.”

“Vaquero” comes from the spanish word “vaca” or cow.

The United States’ Spanish-speaking population used the term, popularized in the 1850, to refer to a Mexican cowboy. “Vaquero,” however, has passed into history. Much like the old rides and roping of the South West, the traditional Mexican cowboy exists only in grainy photographs of the past. These poignant homages show the foundation of cattle work in the U.S., and compose the Sandoz Center’s newest exhibit, “Vaquero: Genesis of the Texas Cowboy.”

rapher Bill Wittliff, these images show dusty vaqueros working on a ranch in Northern Mexico.

Joe Frantz, a Texas historian, offered Wittliff the opportunity to record the vaqueros’ ways before they passed into obsolescence. This intimate and thoughtful exhibit features books, photos, and a roping station, where guests can practice wielding a lasso. This exhibit is also the Sandoz Center’s, first bilingual feature, with its captions in both Spanish and English.

“We’ve done vaquero programs with K-12 kids before,” Sarah Polak, director of the Sandoz Center, said. “The teachers were very excited, since some of the kids had been bullied for not being of euro-American, English-speaking descent. They’d been told they don’t have a place in our culture.”

Wittliff ’s photos tell a different story about the history and culture of cattlemen.

One pedestal holds two copies of the book “The King Ranch” by Tom Lea, one in English and the other, Spanish. The book tells the story of King Ranch, one of the largest ranches in the world, in southern Texas. In this enormous ranch’s infancy, an entire village of vaqueros moved from Mexico to tend the King Ranch cattle. Their commitment to ranching helped develop the entire culture and practice of the “cowboy.” One panel of the exhibit recounts Wittliff ’s interview with a vaquero. He asks how long the

man had been working with cows. “Since I was six,” the man replies. Wittliff asks what his father did. “Vaquero,” the man says. His father before that? Vaquero. “Vaquero,” the ranch man responds, “Vaquero since the beginning.”

Of this forgotten heritage, Polak said, “I did not grow up in the ranch and country life, so anything that helps me understand the environment in which I now live is valuable to myself, as it is to the community.”

The exhibit will be open through May 9, including graduation.

“If your parents come in early, and you’d like an interesting, air-conditioned place to take them,” Polak said, “the exhibit will be open.”

The term that Polak used — “interesting” — is humble, as the exhibit, compact and thoughtful, also explores an important oversight in the American Western mystique. The mexican heritage of the cowboy does not stop at the vaquero.

Words like rodeo and lariat were borrowed from the Spanish tongue, and the Old West’s cowboys were not all one color. The Sandoz Center’s newest exhibit shows not only images of the past, but truths about the inherited present.

“We want to show,” Polak said, “that not all cowboys were Marlboro men.”

The exhibit is free and open to the public 8 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m., Saturday.

‘The Black Market’ does not rise to the occasion Angie Webb Advertising Director On July 15, 2014, punk rock band Rise Against released their seventh studio album “The Black Market,” their first album of new content since 2011’s “Endgame.” “The Black Market” debuted at No. 3 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and received mostly positive reviews from critics.

However, Rise Against does not stray from its typical sound and album structures from the past. It has repetitive chord structures in most of its guitar tracks, one acoustic track near the end of the album, and, albeit more general and unfocused than previous albums, politically charged messages throughout the lyrics.

The album exhibits a tone of weariness and struggle that occurs when trudging through life, a phenomenon that almost all college students have experience within their lives.

The message is the strongest piece of the album; musically, this album feels generic and uninspired compared to Rise Against’s early albums, especially toward the end.

The first song of the album, “The Great Die-Off,” starts out fast and portrays a tone of inspiration and passion to perservere through difficult times. The song also uses imagery of war and battlefields, a theme popular in previous Rise Against songs, to provide a sense of strength and power to listeners. This provides contrast to the end of the album that features slower songs.

“I Don’t Want To Be Here Anymore” is the second song of the album and also its first single. This song explicitly states the theme of the album and is the first point where the nar-

rator begins to feel struggle and strife with his aware of that fact and try their best to change every day life. In typical Rise Against fashion, the 11th song, near the end of the album, is an acoustic ballad called “People Live Here,” which is an attempt to relive the same success as the band’s ballads such as “Swing Life Away” from the album “Siren Songs of the Counter Culture,” and “Hero of War” from the album “Endgame.” “People Live Here” is not as strong musically as previous ballads and feels like an attempt to cash in on the aforementioned success of other ballads. However, this song is worth a listen for its strong lyrics focused on how the madness of fighting and strife can make humans forget that others are the same, that they experience the same struggles and the same happiness.

The final song on the album, “Bridges,” provides a strong, yet negative conclusion to the album with a message of how the rich often benefit from the hard labor of the working class, a sad yet true reality of life that may hit close to home to those about to graduate. This song contrasts the fire and passion of “The Great Die-Off ” well, and also helps redeem the album from its boring middle.

Rise Against’s “The Black Market” provides listeners with a message about how life can be difficult and full of stressful endeavors; the bleakness of the theme displays a harsh reality that we, as college students, can help change. Although this is not the strongest album both lyrically and musically, and weaker than previous Rise Against albums, its beginning and ending are worth the listen for rock music fans.

Teri Robinson Photo Editor Running, screaming, and competitive games had about 70 students high on adrenaline Friday during the Tower of Power event in High Rise.

Co-sponsored by Resident Life Association and The Big Event, the Tower of Power brought students to all 11 floors of High Rise to compete and become the first to finish the tower and sign-up in the Gold Room for The Big Event on April 25. The Big Event at Chadron State is a community service event that allows the college stu-

dents to give back to Chadron’s community and businesses.

Each floor of High Rise allowed students to compete against each other in order to advance to the next floor. Games ranging from tictac-toe, rock-paper-scissors, corn hole, and many others were placed from second floor to the top.

Once each participant reached the 11th floor, they received a paper crown and were sent back down to the Gold Room. There, they were encouraged to sign up for The Big Event if they hadn’t already, and could relax, eat, and win prizes.

As of Friday, over 450 volunteers had signed up for The Big Event. Students can continue to sign up through April 1.
