Students thank Senate for funding visit to Frankenstein Symposium Nalani Stewart News Editor During Monday’s Senate meeting, students who attended the Frankenstein 200! Symposium came to thank Senate for funding the trip.

“We had a really great time there, and I also got to connect with different professors in the MFA background. It was a really great opportunity to reach out and branch out and start connecting to other schools,” Shaniya DeNaeyer, 21, junior of Valentine said.

“I’d like to thank you for funding the trip. It was a very rewarding trip and multiple panels stuck out,” Zane

Hesting, 27, senior of Burr Oak, Kansas, said. “So, it wasn’t just an English thing. We could hear opinions about literature from biological perspectives, psychological perspectives and also get to talk to multiple grads students from the University of South Dakota.”

“We had 22 students total who came with us. We were the largest group represented there and a number of the different professors commented on the quality of questions that our students asked, and the quality of the participation,” Assistant Professor of English and Humanities Kimberly Cox said.

Senate has a current budget of $89,582.75 in unallocated funds.

“We are just around $140,000 in allocated unspent funds,” Vice President of Finance Lukas Klueber said.

Senate allocated $8,500 toward the budget requested for the Nearly Naked Mile. The budget is broken down into $3,917.52 for t-shirts, $200 for postcards and posters, $800 for staff gear, $3,000 for prizes including an Apple Watch and a futon, $50 for food and drink, $375 for decorations for the Spring Days dance and $120 for trash bags. The total requested budget came to $8,762.52.

In another matter, the Spring Days committee has a table set up in the Student Center for students and their clubs to sign up to help volunteer at Spring Days and sign up for Mr. and Mrs. Spring Days.

Students ask to support CaringBridge Account Loren Ritter Sports Editor CAB Vice Chair of Finance, Tierra Snyder, raised the concern of Phil Cary, who was a math professor at CSC for over 20 years.

Cary just retired from CSC last year, and his family shared a story on Facebook about how recently six tumors have been found in his brain.

A few students set up a CaringBridge account, and are asking students to share the account and spread the word. An email with the link to the CaringBridge account will be sent out to student emails soon.

RLA and Plainswalkers Club is sponsoring a Live Clue Night in The Hub from 7 - 10 p.m., Thursday, April 29. Invitations were sent out with more information.

The Pit will be hosting a sports themed dance tonight in the Student Center.

one absence, an email will be sent out to the club, after the second and third absence, clubs must meet with Senate to discuss a 20 percent deduction of the club’s budget. A fourth absence will result in a suspension of funds and a fifth absence will end with the club no longer being active.

Scholastic Days will be April 6. It is a day for high school students to come take academic tests, as well as see the campus. 18 clubs have signed up to help with Scholastic Day. If any more clubs would like to volunteer, they should contact Interim Student Activities Coordinator Megan Northrup, Senate secretary Konery Klueber or CAB Chair Kimberly Hernandez.

Spring Days activities will be April 11-15. To kick things off, at 6 p.m. on April 11, RLA will be hosting a Spring Days opening bash in the backyard by the volleyball sand courts.

Mr. and Mrs. Spring Days is 90s theme pageant on April 12.

Funny skits and outfits are welcome. John Murphy, junior of Harrison, and Katie O Boyle, senior of Gering, will be emceeing the event.

Petting zoos will be set up in the Rangeland Complex from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 13. Two different petting zoos are coming, one with farm animals and the other with exotic animals.

Club booths will be set up in the Chicoine Center. Around eight

clubs have signed up, but CAB would like as many clubs as possible to participate.

Cardinal Key will be hosting a JDRF walk to support juvenile diabetes starting at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Armstrong Gymnasium.

The Nest is having a cookout at 11:30 a.m. at the softball fields, Saturday April 14. Softball games will be at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. that afternoon. That night, a dance will be taking place from 9 p.m. to midnight in the Student Center.

The last Free Movie Night of the semester will conclude the Spring Days events, on April 15.

The Campus Improvement Committee project of placing water bottle stations in every building on campus is almost complete.

Water bottle stations have been placed in almost every building on campus, except for Miller Hall due to plumbing issues.

Members of Senate motioned to approve the Co-Curricular Outcomes for campus adoption during the general assembly that Dr. Nesheim has been working to get approved.

“That’s approval right? Diggity. You guys make me very happy,” Dr. Nesheim said.

The Big Event registration is still open until April 12. Clubs can sign up together, job sites can be registered or individuals can sign up to participate. The Big Event is Saturday, April 21.

BRIEFS Sign up for Pet Therapy To help students cope with the stress of finals week, the college is implementing Pet Therapy. Project Strive and RLA are requesting help from students by asking them to volunteer their time and pets for Pet Therapy at 5-7 p.m. on May 1, by the Clock Tower. They would like to have three to four dogs from 5-7 p.m., and three to four dogs from 6-7 p.m. If you would like to volunteer your dog, there are several requirements, including a handler that stays with the dog at all times, cleaning up any ‘mess’ that the dog may make, insurance and a completed volunteer form. Volunteer forms are due by noon on Friday, April 20, to Associate Director of Residence Life Taylor Osmotherly or Director of Project Strive/TriO Jennifer Schaer. Parking lot remains closed The parking lot behind the football stadium that connects the Nelson Physical Activity Center southern parking lot to the Chicoine Center parking lot, will remain closed for the next two weeks. The closure is due to construction materials delivery and crane work for the football stadium construction. The NPAC parking lot will still be accessible from the west side of campus and the Chicoine Center parking lot from the east side of campus.

International Luncheon The CSC International students are hosting an International Luncheon and Information session at noon, Thursday, March 29, in the Scottsbluff Room in the Student Center. Tickets are $7.60 for community members, $5.70 for CSC employees and students can use their meal plans.

Scholastic Contest The CSC 2018 Scholastic Contest begins at 7:30 a.m., on Friday April 6.

Donate to Community Essentials Pantry Residence Life Association will be partnering with Western Community Health Resources from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28, to raise support for the Community Essentials Pantry. The Community Essentials Pantry is a place where people in need can get items that aren’t typically covered by food stamps. Items needed include deodorant, soap, tampons and other personal hygiene products. The goal of the program is to inform students about the pantry for their use if they are in need, as well as to collect items for students and faculty that wish to donate to the cause. Items may be donated in drop-box locations around campus and at Western Community Health Resources.

In light of the scandal surrounding Cambridge Analytica’s mining of personal data from more than 50 million unsuspecting Facebook users, The Eagle is dropping its official Facebook page effective the close of business Friday.

We must self-educate before we demonstrate The recent movement for gun control, “March for Our Lives,” has shed a new light on the recent school shootings. This movement has been started by students who have experienced school shootings first-hand. They have been forced into the spotlight to stand up for their fallen peers, and are now fighting the battle to bring justice to their deaths.

We acknowledge that the deaths of innocent people is prevalent in the U.S. and across the globe. Students should not have to focus their energy on what to do during a school shooting, or whether their fellow classmates may cause them harm. A march is needed and a stand must be made, but what can we truly do to prevent the next attack?

When examining the “March for Our Lives,” we must simply ask: what are they advocating for? Are they advocating for gun control, gun reform or simply to ban guns?

The goal of the march seemed to be broad without a singular goal.

In several interviews, many marchers were quick to say that they wish to ban firearms, but do they know what that means?

They’re trying to take firearms away from innocent, law-abiding citizens. They’re fighting to take away one of the rights that we as citizens of the United States are guaranteed.

However, it cannot be denied that there are flaws in our system, and the solution to such flaws are not black and white. A reform on gun laws may be needed, but the solution is not as simple as banning all guns.

The citizens participating in the “March for Our Lives” have good reason to be there, but it seems we, as a country, need to be educated on what our Second Amendment rights fully entail. We also need to educate ourselves on the national gun laws, as well as state gun laws.

The school shootings are tragedies, that is not up for debate, but heightened gun control isn’t the only solution that should be in discussion.

The recent gun control debate should have a focus on mental health and making psych evaluations renewed more frequently, before renewing gun licenses.

It’s great that they are utilizing their First Amendment, however, it’s ironic that they’re using one of their constitutional rights to have another right taken away.

Marching for the lives of innocent children who have died from school shootings is something admirable and the survivors of the Parkland shooting are right to take a stand. To use the spotlight they’ve been given is imperative in finding a solution.

However, it is important to be knowledgeable about the cause one is fighting for and to have a common goal in mind.

Decrease virtual presence and live in the moment

Columnist We live in a country that is absolutely consumed with technology. Everywhere we go there are advertisements trying to entice you to buy the “best” phone, television, smart watch, tablet or computer.

It’s pretty easy to get consumed with the little glowing device that fits in your hand. I admit I’ve spent too much time on my phone, especially on apps like Pinterest. Maybe you are like me and want to change that.

Here are a few things to try throughout your day in the the hopes of helping decrease our virtual presence and increase our presence in the wonderful real world outside of your phone.

The first and maybe most important tip is putting your phone away at meals and get-togethers. Whenever I go to lunch or

dinner, I try to keep my phone in my pocket or backpack. That also includes when I’m grabbing coffee with my friends or going bowling.

It’s important to keep it out of sight so you don’t feel like you have to check Facebook every five minutes. Being present in the moment is so much better than capturing it on your phone to share. It’s like trying to take a picture of a sunset. The camera never does it

enough justice. So, be selfish and immerse yourself in the moment.

Another tip is to keep your phone away from you while you’re studying. I feel like everyone is guilty of checking Snapchat or Twitter when doing homework.

Yes, homework isn’t always fun, but if you put your phone across your room and check it every hour or so, you will find yourself being a lot more productive.

I tried it over the weekend and got a lot more done than normally when I have my phone on my desk. You can always text your friends and apologize later for putting your education above liking the meme they tagged you in.

One last tip I have is keeping your phone away from your bed at night. I use my phone as an alarm, but I also have a tendency to spend an hour on social media after laying down to go to bed. I deprive myself of sleep to watch one more funny

video and it’s never actually worth it.

As a result, I started putting my phone just out of reach. That way, I am not tempted but when my alarm goes off I don’t have to go far to turn it off. I really encourage anyone who feels like they spend too much time on their phone to try some ways to break those habits. We spend so much time talking about the newest phone or meme that we forget in a week, it won’t matter.

Although this may sound like a recommendation to completely stay off your phone, these are just a few ways to decrease the time you spend on your phone.

Not to completely eradicate it.

So, on that note, go see more sunsets and less videos of people listening to music in their car. For some reason, we all have a person like that on Snapchat.

Be present. Be in the moment with your friends, not on Instagram with your “followers.”

Warm weather presents great opportunities Devin Fulton Contributor Warm weather is finally making a comeback and it sure feels great. Yes, there could be more snow storms coming up, but we should be ecstatic that spring is finally here. Instead of waking up shivering and cold, we can now wake up to sunlight and birds chirping.

With warm weather finally here, everybody should take time out of their days to enjoy the outdoors. From playing catch with a frisbee to just walking around town, incorporating the outdoors in our daily routine is the ultimate way to enjoy spring

and summer.

Over the last few months, we didn’t have the best options for any diversity in our daily routines. Because of the frigid conditions winter brought us, daily schedules were reduced to remaining indoors all day long.

Now that the weather is warm and friendly, we all are presented with so many opportunities to spice up our daily lives. So, to not incorporate any sunshine in to your schedule would be a disservice to yourself.

We are always stuck inside buildings with artificial lighting while our eyes are locked on a screen, so going for just a 15-minute walk would be rewarding for your body and mind.

Many studies show that being outside in nature is

a great way to relieve stress, which is a goal for most us. Obtaining Vitamin D is also not a bad idea for your personal wellness.

What is not to like about doing your mind and body a favor? The good news is, there are no prerequisites to enjoying the outdoors. With so many activities and people to hang out with outside, you could be missing out while remaining indoors. When you look back at your college experience, will you be happy that you stayed inside every single day while the weather was nice?

Make sure to put on your favorite visor, grab some sneakers and go enjoy the warmth now that it is finally back.

Eagles split 4-game series vs. BHSU Softball team competes in Gillette, Wyoming due to poor field conditions in Spearfish, S.D. Devin Fulton Reporter

Over the weekend, the Eagle softball team traveled to Gillette, Wyoming to take on the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets. The series was originally scheduled to be played in Spearfish, South Dakota, but the field conditions were unable host a softball game.

The Eagles earned their first series win in conference play this season, as they went 3-1 against the Yellow Jackets.

On Friday, The Eagles started their weekend with a sweep, going 2-0 against Black Hills State University. In the first game of the afternoon, the Eagles held a 3-0 lead throughout the entire match, but the Yellow Jackets started to rally in the seventh inning.

Black Hills State University scored two runs, trailing 3-2, but the Eagles were able to walk away with the early victory. In the game, Ellie Owens, sophomore of Longmont, Colorado, and Allie Mason, sophomore of Loveland, Colorado, led the way with all three runs.

In game two of the afternoon, the Eagles scored the lone point in the entire game, winning 1-0 after six scoreless innings between both teams.

Angelica Maples, sophomore of Olivehurst, California, was in charge of the single in the first inning. Megan Horn, sophomore of Colorado Springs, Colorado, was responsible for 11 strikeouts as she

earned fourth victory in the 1-0 shutout.

On Saturday, the Eagles continued their series sweep in the first game of the afternoon. After 11 innings, Chadron State was able to defeat Black Hills State 3-2.

In the game, Jessica Jarecki, sophomore of Littleton, Colorado, struck out 12 batters while only allowing six hits in 11 innings. Owens was responsible for the game-winning RBI. The Yellow Jackets were finally able to get a victory in the fourth and final game of the series. Black Hills State scored their two runs in t h e

first inning , which was enough to prevail

against the Eagles later in the game.

The Yellow Jackets defeated the Eagles 2-1. After six scoreless innings, the Eagles finally scored on an unearned run, but still fell to the Yellow Jackets.

After the weekend, the Eagles’ record improves to 9-10 in conference play and 11-18 overall, sitting in the sixth spot of the RMAC. This weekend, the Eagles will host RMAC opponent Colorado Christian University who have an 18-1 record in conference play and sit at the second spot in the RMAC. The Eagles host a four-game series beginning today at noon against Colorado Christian University.

CSC Rodeo team excels at Eastern Wyoming College Kylee Odenbach Reporter

The Chadron State College Rodeo team traveled to Torrington, Wyoming over the weekend to compete at Eastern Wyoming College.

Despite a seventh place finish in Torrington, the men’s team managed to hold onto their fifth place position in overall standings.

The team showcased their talents at the rodeo in the steer wrestling, bull riding and bareback events.

Ethan Lesiak, senior of Clarks, won the bull riding in

Torrington with scores of 76 and 80. Lesiak was the only bull rider to stay on for both rounds.

Dakota Rice, senior of Kellogg, Idaho scored 64 points for the team on his first bull. He didn’t ride his second bull, but still took second place at the rodeo.

Devin Dibbern, sophomore of Riverdale brought home another first for CSC’s rodeo team this weekend in the steer wrestling. He turned in a time of 6.1 on his first steer and a time of 5.7 on his second, giving him a total time of 11.8 for both rounds.

Prestyn Novak, senior of Newell, South Dakota won the opening round of the steer wrestling with a time of 5.7, but

did not receive a time in the next round.

Rowdy Moon, junior of Sargent won fifth in the bareback riding scoring 66 points in the first round and 67 in the second round.

“As a team, we are practicing hard and improving each and every day. We are blessed enough to get to do what we love, even when our weekends don’t go exactly as we hoped them to,” Merisa Cominiello, sophomore of Burlington, Colorado, rodeo team member said. “We are looking forward to the rest of the season and finishing strong,” Chadron State College’s Rodeo team will compete next on April 6-8, at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.

Hanson and Bleidt lead Eagle Track & Field Eagles claim nine first place finishes at the Black Hills State Yellow Jacket Sping Open Nicole Lartey and Aaron Duin Reporters The CSC Track and Field team claimed nine first place and 12 second place finishes this weekend at the Black Hills State Spring Open in Spearfish, South Dakota. This year, Black Hills State University hosted seven teams at the Yellow Jacket Spring Open.

The Eagles were led by Jesse Bleidt, senior of Lewellen, who claimed the RMAC title in the weight throw earlier this month.

He dominated both the hammer throw and the discus with an outstanding marks of 179 feet, 5 inches and 156 feet, 11 inches respectively.

Hanson’s hammer throw mark was more than 12 feet past the provisional qualifying distance and put her in ninth position in the nation.

Maddie Brashears, junior of Fort Morgan, Colorado won the 100 meter dash, with a time of 13.40 seconds, and finished as runner-up in the long jump.

Chasidy Horton, junior of Fountain, Colorado won the 200 meter dash with a personal best time of 27.26 seconds.

CSC Golf shows improvement in Pueblo, Colorado Aaron Duin Reporter The Chadron State golf team turned in their best performance of the year at a 36-hole tournament this weekend at the Pack Spring Invite in Pueblo, Colorado. The Eagles finished with a team score of 684 strokes and a 12th place finish in the tournament at Walking Stick Golf Club.

Chadron State’s strong play in the opening round paved the way for a great tournament. The first-round score of 328 was the 6th best in school history. The

Eagles were led by Sam Rahmig, junior of Gering. Her Sunday round of 76 was the best of her collegiate career.

Rahmig’s Monday round of 85 contributed to her finish in a tie for 30th place.

The remaining golfers all showed improvements and posted collegiate-best tournament scores. Adrianna Weeldreyer, freshman of Newell, South Dakota cut 11 strokes off her previous collegiate best tournament score at 80-87-167. Tori Meschke, freshman of Broken Bow, also showed improvement with a score of 85-90-175 subtracting 10 strokes from her previous best tournament at Chadron State.

The Eagle golfers were rounded out by Logan Kasten,

freshman of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Her final score of 8794-181 was also a collegiate best. More consistent play from the freshman has been key to the Eagles success this spring.

“I’m proud of the hard work the girls are putting in,” said head coach John Ritzen. “It is finally starting to show on the course.”

The Eagle golfers have a weekend off to sharpen their game before heading to Arkansas for their next tournament. Chadron State will compete in the Hardscrabble Invitational April 9 and 10. This tournament provides the Eagles a final chance to improve before the RMAC Championships beginning April 22.

“The passion has kind of grown as I progress through college. I took our photography class here and it taught me a lot and set me down the right path to learn a lot more about it,” Peterson said.

When asked what advice he would give to his freshman self, Peterson said, “I would just say be open and try everything because it is kind of shocking what you find that you love as you go through these stages in your life … [B]e open and don’t be shy. Get to know people and build up a network of people because it is a really cool experience.”

Cashore Marionettes conclude Galaxy Series season Katelyn Lambert Lifestyles Editor

The Galaxy Series concluded its 2017-2018 season with a performance of “Life in Motion” by Joseph Cashore of the Cashore Marionettes.

Cashore performed this two-act show at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the Memorial Hall Auditorium.

Cashore’s interest in marionettes, puppets controlled using a series of strings attached to different parts of the puppet, began when he was 10 years old.

According to Cashore’s website, he has been performing and designing marionettes for more than thirty years.

Conferencing Coordinator Shellie Johns said the committee who selects each year’s Galaxy Series performances chose the Cashore Marionettes to be a part of this year’s Galaxy Series after seeing them perform at the Midwest Arts Conference.

Cashore’s performance of “Life in Motion” combined both marionette artistry and famous classical music

from composers such as Beethoven, Strauss and Vivaldi with ordinary life events, from putting a child to sleep to flying a kite.

Cashore’s marionettes were kneehigh, and each had different features and outfits creating varying personalities to be portrayed in each piece.

The show consisted of a series of pieces all based around different life events of humans and animals.

The first piece was of a marionette violinist who played along to a violin solo from “The Lark Ascending”

by Vaughan Williams.

Cashore then presented his next piece, telling the audience, “And now, I’d like you to imagine you’re at the circus … ” The piece told the short tale of a young amateur trapeze artist, nervous to perform for the audience.

Manipulating the strings, Cashore showed the marionette struggling to grab hold of the trapeze, then performing various tricks.

The remainder of the performance went on in a similar fashion, Cashore

prefacing each piece with background information, then performing the piece choreographed to music.

In a piece titled “African Morning,” Cashore performed with an elephant marionette, who was trying to find food on the savanna. With movable ears, tail, trunk and legs, Cashore was able to portray the movement of the elephant on a small scale.

Cashore also confronted some more controversial issues, presenting a piece titled “Old Mike, No Address,” featuring a marionette named Old Mike, a homeless man.

The piece showed Old Mike struggling to cope with his homelessness, from sleeping on a bench to rifling through trash trying to find food.

The next event at the Memorial Hall Auditorium will be Brooks Hafey’s faculty piano recital, from 3-4 p.m. on Saturday, April 7.

The concert, the third of five in a series of concerts featuring the solo pieces of Claude Debussy, is free and open to the public.

‘The Voice’ returns for its 14th season Sharaya Toof Contributor When it comes to televised talent shows, specifically singing talent shows, “The Voice” does not follow the standard format. Between unique auditions and coaching instead of judging, “The Voice” has found its way to renewal for its 14th season.

“The Voice” is a widely popular singing competition that has amassed many viewers. The show provides music artists, young and old alike, the opportunity to receive a record deal at the conclusion of the season if they are crowned “The Voice.”

NBC’s “The Voice” is unique compared to other singing competition shows on television today,

offering many interesting aspects that no other talent show on television can provide.

For instance, “The Voice” auditions competitors through Blind Auditions, where the four coaches of each season – this season’s coaches are Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and Alicia Keys – face away from the contestant auditioning on a chair that turns.

If the coach hears something they like, the coach presses a button and turns to face the contestant. Then, if multiple coaches turn around, the coaches must try to persuade the contestant on why they should join that coach’s team.

The Blind Auditions gives artists a chance to show the coaches their raw vocal talent. This allows the coaches strictly to judge on pure talent, and not focus on appearances.

On top of the Blind Auditions, there is another characteristic to this show that makes it so fun to watch: the head-to-head battles.

Whether it be Team Adam, Team Blake, Team Alicia or Team Kelly, each coach has to pick two of their team members to battle in an intense sing-off.

In the end, the coach must pick the best artist to advance to the next round.

However, if another team captain likes the singer that is being kicked off the opposing team, they have a chance to steal that artist for themselves. This adds a fun twist to this singing show that helps give the show a competitive edge.

Watching each artist struggle, go through changes and make it all the way to the season finale is what makes “The Voice” such an amazing display of talents. Season 14 of “The Voice” is in a position to be
