BUDGET HEARINGS END TUESDAY

INTERNATIONAL CLUB EXPOSES VARIOUS CULTURES

The AFB completed budget hearings Tuesday.

Clubs should have their letters and appeal hearings will be Monday and Tuesday. The budgets will be presented to Senate on April 10.

The International Club hosted its annual food tasting party Saturday in the Student Center. The club entertained 250 people with food and entertainment from various cultures. There were 12 different dishes and four acts.

CSC unveils plan for Sports Complex Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor A remodeled stadium, updated press box, renovated field, and construction of an outdoor track are in the future for CSC’s sports department.

The Chadron State College Sports Complex will cost a total of $11.1 million, but $8.6 million has been secured, CSC President Randy Rhine said at a press conference Wednesday in the Chicoine Center.

The conference focused mainly on phase one of the Sports Complex project, which includes the stadium, press box, and field renovations. The second phase will create an outdoor track for the track and field team.

In 2014, a structural engineering company—Hermanson Egge Engineering, of Rapid City, South Dakota—inspected the Don Beebe Stadium and found that the structural integrity of central stands were failing. There were concerns with the poor drainage, deteriorating field conditions and inadequate services for spectators and game personnel, Rhine said.

Phase one of the Sports Complex seeks to fix those issues.

BVH Architecture, of Lincoln, put the designs for the renovations together. BVH also designed the Eagle Ridge buildings and Rangeland Complex on campus.

Adolfson & Peterson Construction, of Minneapolis, will construct the project.

The project received $6.2 million through the Nebraska Legislative bill 957. The $2.3 million came from a combination of different sources, Rhine said. He noted the CSC foundation office, other cash set aside, and donors contributed to the project. He said the project received $300,000 from the State Colleges Sports Facility Cash Fund.

In the 102nd Nebraska Legislative Session, LB 969 was created. The State Colleges Sports Facilities Cash Fund was part of that bill, which created funds that the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees would administer to help finance renovations or construction of intercollegiate athletic, student fitness, recreation, or sports facilities at the state college.

The bill stated that on Oct. 1 of 2012, 2013, and 2014, $250,000 would be transferred from the Civic and Community Financing Fund each year

to the Sports Facilities Cash Fund.

In 2015, the amount was to increase to $400,000 each year. Any revenue gained through gifts, grants, bequests, donations, and other contributions would also go into the Sports Facilities Cash Fund.

Rhine said the college expects to receive $600,000 more over the next two years for this project from that fund. He said that money would be earmarked specifically for the track project.

“We feel pretty good about that money coming to us right now, but anything can happen,” Rhine said about potential budget cuts from the Nebraska Legislature and governor.

There is still $2.5 million needed for the overall project.

Rhine said he does not expect any more bond money to come in for the project and will focus more on the private sector for the rest of the funds.

Connie Rasmussen, Chadron State foundation executive director, said the foundation committed to giving $1 million, but said the foundation will give more if they can.

“We are talking about it (raising money) every day and working on it every day,” Rasmussen said.

This project is set to begin demolition Nov. 13, 2017, which is the Monday after the final home game of the 2017 football season. The project will work through the summer to be completed for the 2018 season. The field and stadium were built in 1929, and the last time the Con Marshall Press Box was renovated was in 1998.

“The rebuild provides four fundamental and essential improvements to the stadium complex,” Athletic Director Joel Smith said at Wednesday’s press conference.

The field will shift slightly to the south of where it sits now to accommodate for visitor stands, Smith said.

The stadium and press box will also move to the south in response.

This will require remodeling of the parking lot to allow for the move, Smith said.

Don Beebe Stadium will be updated to a two-level facility. The lower level of the stadium will feature better, larger concession stands, and bathrooms for spectators. There will be expanded seating for spectators as well.

The second level will be for the updated Con Marshall Press Box that will feature updated technology and space for modern media. Smith said

there will be room for proper broadcast. There will be a hospitality center in the middle of the second level for booster, alumni, and other supporters of CSC. Elliott Field will be converted to a turf surface to allow year-round use.

Head Football Coach Jay Long reminded those at the press conference that the weight room, training room, and locker room for players were updated in 2011, and in the last five years, six of the 11 RMAC schools have updated their stadiums. He said most of the prior stadiums at those schools were superior to CSC’s. He said he is excited for the change and to give future generations of Eagle football players the chance to make memories on an incredible field.

Head Track and Field Coach Brad Gamble noted his track and field team has earned great success especially in the past two years, despite not having their own outdoor track. He said CSC is the only RMAC school without a track and it is a hurdle the team has to cross in terms of recruiting, practicing, and even team continuity. An outdoor track will be added as part of phase two of this project upon acquiring the remaining funds.

CSC prepares for accreditation visit Melanie Nelson News Editor CSC submitted an assurance argument to the Higher Learning Commission Thursday, as the last step to renewing accreditation before HLC reviewers visit campus.

HLC accepted CSC’s quality initiative report in September 2016, which began the reaffirmation process.

CSC hired Katherine Bahr, retired CSC English professor, to be the lead writer on the argument and Margaret Crouse, retired dean for the school of education, human performance, counseling, psychology and social work, to assist her. They have been working on the project for more than a year. Numerous other

faculty members submitted artifacts to be used as evidence in the 35,000word argument.

“Basically it’s us telling the story of who we are,” Dean of the School of Liberal Arts James Margetts said.

“I think it’s a very fair representation of us.”

Margetts said there were five key points that HLC was looking for in the argument: the institution’s mission, evidence of student learning, evidence of adequate operational resources, appropriate policies and procedures for fair treatment, and proof that a high-quality education is provided.

Margetts said CSC used information collected from student surveys as part of the basis for identifying problem areas on campus and making improvements.

“It helps us see what we’re good at, and what we want to be better at,” Margetts said.

The report details CSC’s strengths and weaknesses, and also the things that the school is actively working to change.

HLC will send four reviewers to campus April 24-25 to assess the accuracy of the argument. Each reviewer comes from a different place and background, but all have worked at some level within a college before.

While in Chadron they will meet with students, faculty, and administration, and tour the campus buildings. They will also hold an open forum on campus, open to CSC students only, to obtain their opinions on the capabilities of the school.

After the campus visit, the reviewers will issue a report of their

findings to the HLC board, who will decide if CSC is acceptable for accreditation renewal. Three outcomes are possible: accreditation granted without any follow-up concerns, a follow-up visit will be required to address small remaining issues, or the school could be put on probation.

Margetts said he does not anticipate there being any major issues.

After that, HLC will do a virtual site visit in 2021 as a sort of checkup, which is a new policy they have started.

Accreditation is important because it shows that students graduating from this school have met or exceeded high standards and are therefore favorable candidates in the work force. It is sort of a “stamp of approval” that CSC is a highly credible institution, Margetts said.

With Vice President Karson Langley gone for golf and Senate President Katrina Hurley gone to an AIPAC meeting in the District of Columbia, Student Senate Secretary Olivia Vester ran the Senate meeting, where $2,000 was allocated to bring an inspirational speaker to campus next semester.

Holly Hoffman is an inspirational speaker, who was the fourth-place contestant on “Survivor: Nicaragua.” The total to bring this speaker in is $5,500 but Senate is only paying for part.

Hoffman is coming as part of Kim Madsen’s FYI Survival skills class in the fall semester, but the presentation will be open to the public.

A student brought concerns from a custodian about a water bottle filling station in Kent Hall dormitory.

Amid discussion it was mentioned that senators allocated money for filling stations last semester.

On Feb. 8, 2016, senators allocated $6,000 to install water bottle filling stations in Andrews Hall, Kent Hall, Brooks Hall, and there was supposed to be enough money left over for one more station.

Senators and Adviser Deena Kennell said they will look into why the stations haven’t been installed already.

Cassie Mitchell, director of student activities and recreation, said an RA—Becca Barger—is putting together a program to be in conjunction with the Nearly Naked Mile. This program would take donated bras and underwear to give to shelters.

Senate allocated $500 for shipping costs to send the garments.

Sen. Tierra Snyder brought concerns from students in regard to the pet waste bags on campus. She said there were complaints that there are not trashcans next to the bag stations on campus.

Senate had $147,930.30 in unallocated funds at the beginning of the meeting.

All but four of the new Student Center chairs have come in and the Campus Improvement Committee will be putting them together this week, Slaght said.

Senators voted to postpone the approval of the March 20 meeting until the April 3 meeting because Vester was unable to email the minutes out due to a computer issue.

Spring Daze is still looking for volunteers. The first 50 volunteers will be getting something no one else will get, Vester said.

Trump’s budget proposal honors his campaign On March 16, President Donald Trump’s first budget proposal was released, revealing a $1.15 trillion budget. It calls for deep spending cuts, just like he claimed he was going to do when he was running for office. Like with many budget proposals, there are both winners and losers. While the military receives a budget boost of $54 billion, 12 departments take a hit. And surprisingly the agricultural department is among the losers with a projected cut of 21 percent.

So what does the proposed cut mean for the agriculture industry? The budget proposal, “Safeguards the Nation’s supply of meat, poultry, and egg products by fully funding the Food Safety and Inspection Services.” This means, there won’t be much change in this part of the industry. It is also important to note that farming and ranching subsidies will also be protected under the president’s first proposal.

President Trump’s recommended proposal also includes a $2.4 billion budget, which will be dedicated to “fully funding wildland fire preparedness and suppression activities.” There will be resources set aside that are necessary to protect the life and property in unexpected emergencies.

However, President Trump’s proposal also suggests reduced federal funds in the National Forest System and Grassland Areas. For example, he requests funds go toward maintaining existing forests and grasslands rather than seeking “major new federal land acquisitions.” One of the cases where this may affect the independent ranchers and farmers would be if they were expecting to participate more in Conservation Reserve Programs (CRP).

ment to not produce crops or graze livestock on environmentally sensitive land for 10-15 years. All prior agreements under this program will still exist, there just won’t be any additions for the time being. The idea to freeze programs like this isn’t going to make a large impact on the industry. Those ranches/farms that were planning on investing their land in a CRP for their primary income for the year, probably wouldn’t make it in the long run anyway; the farm bill proposal is still being discussed.

President Trump proposes the agriculture department spend time and money focusing on important research issues such as: “increasing farming productivity, sustaining natural resources, including those within rural communities, and addressing food safety and nutrition priorities,” rather than employing individuals whose jobs really aren’t necessary. For example, USDA pays analytical people to call ranchers and farmers asking about their operations (how many acres, head of cattle, etc.) when all of the answers to these questions can be found at county extension offices for everybody to access, making this job unnecessary.

President Trump’s proposal also eliminates the duplicative Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program, this alone saves the government $498 million from 2017. The reason President Trump is eliminating this program is because rural communities can be taken care of through private sectors and other federal investments.

According to the blueprint, President Trump is only doing what he said he was going to do. He’s streamlining, eliminating duplicative, or lower-priority programs in the USDA, giving more power to private sectors allowing them to prosper, and saving the nation money all at the same time.

struggle is real

All these words, but no words

It’s a struggle at times to find words.

I am a communication arts major, with my emphasis in journalism. I competed in speech for four years in high school, and I did events where I had to write my own speeches. I was a thespian on my high school stage for four years. I have interviewed for four jobs, and so far have a perfect record of coming out with job offers (knock on wood…). I taught a summer camp for two years where I spoke in front of groups of three to 25 kids at a time, and most of the time I kept their attention. I have been interviewed on a statewide radio program, and have presented for a church group. I write a monthly column in The West Nebraska Register and write at least one article a week in The Eagle.

I have been told words are my thing by various people . But sometimes, there simply are not words.

Last week, I learned that a friend of my family’s and one of my mom’s best friends’

cancer has progressed quickly.

This man is a doctor. He has spent his life taking care of other people, saving other people’s lives, and bringing new lives into this world, and now his life is in danger.

This man has a way of putting every other person ahead of himself. He made house calls, in an age where house calls aren’t common. He went into work in emergencies, even when he was not on call. He attended football, basketball, wrestling, and baseball games and brought some peace and comfort to all the moms in the stands when they saw him sitting in the bleachers.

He makes jokes when he’s about to give you a shot, or cause you pain in some way, in an effort to make the pain a little less.

This man saved my grandpa. He gave my

grandpa back to us for a little while and he brought my grandma peace in a time where there was none, and he did not only care for them at the doctor’s office; he came to their 50th wedding anniversary.

He coached my brother in basketball as a kid, and allowed me to help him coach, even though I was not anywhere close to a basketball star. He made those boys feel special and he made me feel important and welcome.

He coached my brother in baseball with my mom as the assistant, and those two were quite a pair. He would yell at the boys, and immediately after, she would say, “But good try!” They quickly became friends.

This man forced my dad to go to the doctor to get his blood pressure checked, and to make sure he was taking care of himself.

And this man was not the doctor on call when my brother cut off his finger with a table saw, but he showed up in the emergency room anyway, and he worked for as long as he could to save that finger for my brother.

And just a few weeks ago, at district wrestling, this man was sitting at a table watching three mats at once and as soon as there was a blood time or injury time, he was there looking at the boys to make sure

they were ok.

His family has already sacrificed so much to allow him to be there for all the rest of us, which shows how amazing his family is as well. His kids are some of the kindest, sweetest people I know and his wife, I believe, is actually a saint.

This man is a doctor. He is the best doctor I have ever known and it will take a lot to change that idea. But, he is also a mentor, to me, a communications major. He is a friend, to me, a 22-year old girl who is the same age as his kids. He is a caregiver, he is an inspiration, and he is a role model.

This man was sent to be a blessing to everyone who crossed his path, and now he’s sick.

And although I was able to write out this column, there are no words to express my sorrow for him and his family. There are no words to express the pain his family and my hometown are feeling with his diagnosis.

There are no words to express just how much cancer sucks.

Words are a struggle, and there are no words to comfort this kind of struggle, but chocolate still exists, so I’ll have to express my care in chocolate.

TSA: Going too far in ‘protecting’

Syerra Wycoff Bagshaw Columnist We’ve all been subjected to the intrusive, inconvenient searches conducted at airports. As someone with military family I’ve traveled quite a bit and have become all too familiar with the groan-worthy process of airport security.

However, in the last few days airport security/TSA has been put on blast, after a video surfaced on Facebook, which showed a boy being patted down by a TSA officer for two minutes. The pat-down seems not only unnecessary but wildly inappropriate.

The officer in question goes over places already patted down more than a few times and borders on groping. The mother of the child, Jennifer Williamson, recorded the entire ordeal and was outraged. The child in the video suffers from a disorder called SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder) and as such should not be subjected to casual touching or be overstimulated.

When Williamson made note of that to the officers and requested they search him through other means, they continued with this sort of protocol anyway; furthermore, as far as Williamson has stated, the child didn’t set off any alarms when he proceeded through the scanner, nor did he demon-

strate suspicious behavior. They were kept so long that they missed their flight and were placed on an alternate one.

Even watching the video is uncomfortable; frankly if I were the parent in question the video would be a different one: “Local Mom Attacks TSA Officer with Heels and Pepper Spray.”

Since 2001, airport security measures have increased, and rightly so. That year, we were faced with devastating circumstances and made conscientious efforts to protect our nation’s citizens; however, we are now continuing to contribute to a system that has proven to be ineffective in stopping threats and has imposed on the people we are desperately trying to protect.

Students from the Chadron Middle and High schools and WNCC, from the Marshall Islands sang and played ukulele at the International Food Tasting Party Saturday in the Student Center Ballroom.

CSC International Club hosted its annual Food Tasting Party at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the Ballroom.

Nearly 250 people attended the event, to grab a taste from cultures across the globe. There were 12 different dishes, ranging from Indian butter chicken to Venezuelan-style plantains. There are about 25 students in the International Club and all of them helped with the cooking or serving, according to the club President Anh Le, 20, senior of Hanoi, Vietnam.

Many of the dishes were heavily seasoned or spicy, all adding a unique flavor to typical staples such as chicken and rice. One dish in particular was especially distinctive. It was a Japanese dessert called Strawberry Daifuku, which was described as a sort of cake on the label in front of the pan. The outside was mochi, which is a white rice paste that has a texture sort of like a firm dough. Inside was a strawberry slice and a sweet red bean paste, with a strawberry slice garnishing the top as well.

After the guests were seated and tasting the treats, emcee Sara Flores, freshman of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, took the stage to give a welcome. She introduced the four acts that provided entertainment for the evening.

First, was a vocal and guitar performance, followed by a group dance number, both done by Pine Ridge Job Corps students. Then a group of women, ranging from Chadron Middle Schoolers to Western Nebraska Community College, Scottsbluff, students, originating from the Marshall Islands, took the stage to sing and play ukulele for two numbers. Their sweet voices and perfect harmony charmed the crowd. Natsuki Sato, junior of Oita-Shi, Japan, closed the show with a masterful piece on the grand piano.

“I love that the club puts on this event every year,” Kiran Mand, 21, senior of Bellmawr, New Jersey, said. “It’s a special experience getting to taste dishes and hear songs from around the world, right here in Chadron.”

The money raised from the event helps fund a yearly trip the club takes each fall. The club visited Minneapolis last semester.

Ingredients: - 160g Mochiko -160g Koshi-An -40g Sugar -240cc Water -10 Strawberries -1 tsp Potato Starch

Directions: -Divide Koshi-An into 10 portions.

Wash and cut strawberries and wrap with Koshi-An. -Mix Mochiko and sugar in large saucepan, slowly add water until mixture dissolves, then bring to boil.

Stir for 5 min.

-Sift potato starch onto tray and put mochi on top. Let cool. Divide Mochi in 10 parts. Place strawberry in the center of each part and pinch edges to close.

CSC’s softball team won the four-game series against Black Hills State University, Spearfish, South Dakota, at the Chadron State Softball Field Saturday and Sunday.

The games ended with scores of 7-3, 4-3, 9-3, and 8-1, respectively, and all without needing the final half-inning.

The team evened out its overall record to 15-15, and boosted the conference record to 12-7.

In the series, Sheyann Ludwig, freshman of Longmont, Colorado, went 6-for-12, with four runs, seven RBIs, two doubles, and one home run.

Zoe Humphries, senior of Arvada, Colorado, and Kayla Michel, sophomore of Brighton, Colorado, each brought around four, while going 3-for-12, and 4-for-8, respectively. Michel tallied one home run, and Humphries, two.

Taylor Bauer, senior of Rapid City, South Dakota, went 6-for-11, scoring five times, bringing in two.

She hit one double and one home run. Allie Mason, freshman of Loveland, Colorado, also hit one double and one home run while going 3-for-10. She scored twice and sent in three RBIs. In two games, Jessica Jarecki, freshman of Littleton, Colorado, allowed 16 hits while striking out the same, and only allowing six runs and one walk. Kinsley Mason, senior of Loveland, Colorado, pitched 13 innings, allowing 14 hits and four runs. She struck out four.

The first game went scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Kendyl Moody, sophomore of Lakewood, Colorado, advanced to third on a pass ball and came home on the throwing error. The Eagles scored again the next inning when Ludwig knocked one over the fence to score herself and Courtney Lecher, senior of Fort Collins, Colorado. In the sixth, Humphries, Owens and Bauer sent three more over. Morgan Wilhelm, senior of Littleton, Colorado, came around in front of Owens to make hers a 2-run homer.

The Yellow Jackets avoided the shutout in the final inning scoring three on two singles, but the game still ended after six and a half.

Jarecki pitched a complete game with a 2.0 ERA, allowing eight hits and three runs. She struck out 10 and only walked one.

In game two, CSC again scored first in the bottom of the third, when Ludwig batted in her first RBI of the game—Bauer.

Throwers dominate at Yellow Jacket Spring Justine Stone Lifestyles Editor CSC’s Cory Martens, redshirt sophomore of Newton, Kansas, provisionally qualified for the NCAA D-II National Outdoor Track and Field Championships in all three throwing events, winning those events, and setting a school record at the Black Hills State University, Spearfish, South Dakota, Yellow Jacket Spring Open Saturday.

Martens earned gold in the men’s hammer throw, shot put, and discus. He set the program’s hammer record with a throw of 193 feet, 11 inches, a personal-best of more than 20 feet. Martens’ previous best was just 171-3 1/2. Zach Even held the previous school record in the hammer throw with a mark of 184-3 1/2 set in 2003. Martens also claimed a personal-best mark of 52-9 1/2 in the shot put, and he threw the discus 164-9.

Ashlyn Hanson, junior of Seward, won the women’s hammer throw, with a personal-best mark of 178-1. Hanson’s throw is a provisionally-qualifying mark and beats her previous best by eight feet. Hanson also placed second in the discus, throwing 126-6.

Martens and Hanson were chosen as the RMAC Week 2 Field Athletes of the Week. All-American thrower Mel Herl, senior of Eaton, Colorado, was chosen as the women’s Week 1 Field Athlete of the Week, totaling the Eagle throwers three RMAC honors in the first two weeks of the outdoor season.

Blake Jacobs, junior of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, placed second in the men’s shot put, throwing a provisionally-qualifying mark of 52-8, and fourth in the hammer throw with a 170-7-toss. Jesse Bleidt, junior of Lewellan, earned second in the hammer throw with a provisionally-qualifying mark of 179-2, second in shot put, marking 52-8, and third in the discus, throwing 154-10. David Aldridge, junior of Omaha, placed fifth in both the shot put and discus, throwing 47-10 1/2 and 140-5, respectively.

Senior Keri Ruff, of Eaton, Colorado, won the women’s discus throwing 143-8, and placed fourth in the hammer throw with a throw of 148-4. Ashton Hallsted, freshman of Casper, Wyoming, earned third in the hammer throw with a toss of 149-2. Danielle Weyer, freshman of Fremont, claimed fourth in the shot put with a 37-11 3/4-throw followed by Hallsted in fifth, marking 35-7 1/2. Herl did not compete at the Yellow Jacket meet.

Golfers shoot season best Preston Goehring Sports Editor Sam Rahmig, sophomore of Gering, led the CSC golfers to their best two-round tournament score of the season at the Colorado State University-Pueblo Pack Invitational, Monday and Tuesday.

Six teams competed at the invite, CSC finished fifth.

The ThunderWolves also claimed the top team spot with a team total of Rahmig 630 strokes. CSC’s two-day total was 695.

Rahmig completed the first round tied for eighth place, shooting an 82.

She improved to finish sixth of 27 golfers, with an 80 in the second round, finishing with a two-day total of 162.

CSU-P’s Jacquelyn Porman, senior of

Gilbert, Arizona, finished with a 148 to claim the top spot individually.

Mikayla Gallagher, junior of Lead, South Dakota, improved on a first round 90, carding an 82 in the second for a total of 172, tying for 16th.

Junior Kelli Haynes, of Whitney, finished with a 174, and just three places behind Gallagher. Karson Langley, junior of Sidney, finished with a 187, a season-best.

The Eagles have one more regular-season tournament before the RMAC Championships. They will travel to Grand Junction, Colorado, for the Maverick Spring Invitational on April 17-18, hosted by Colorado Mesa University.

The conference championships are April 24-25 in Chandler, Arizona.

Wyoming, won the men’s 5,000-meter race with a time of 15 minutes, 18.2 seconds. Garcia was also third in the 1,500m race, crossing the line in 3:59.84, just three seconds off his personal-best time.

Levi Avila, junior of Mitchell, earned fourth place in the 1,500m with a time of 4:03.55.

Senior Dylan Stansbury, of Crawford, placed fourth in the 5,000m, running 15:39.44. Eric Yager, junior of Hot Springs, South Dakota, followed closely, running 15:44.18 for fifth place.

Tory Snyder, senior of Pierre, South Dakota, cleared 10-8 in the women’s pole vault for first place. Haley Gallagher, redshirt sophomore of Erie, Colorado, tied for first in the high jump, clearing 5-2 1/2.

Maggie Vinton, senior of North Platte, earned second in the 5,000m run with a time of 19:17.14 and fourth in the 1,500m in 5:02.27. Taylor Allison, junior of Gordon, placed fourth in the 5,000m with a time of 19:21.49, followed by Savannah Silbaugh, freshman of Upton, Wyoming, running 20:51.87 for fifth place.

The CSC track team will travel to the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, Saturday, to compete in the UNC Tom Benich Invite.

BHSU scored once in the fourth and fifth on singles, and once in the sixth on a home run.

In the fifth, Michel scored Ludwig on a single. Ludwig marked two more RBIs on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Going into the seventh, CSC was up 4-3 and after denying any runs, the game again ended a half-inning early.

Kinsley Mason pitched six innings, allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out one. Dallas Magnusson, sophomore of Sterling, Colorado, came in as relief in the final inning where she sat one down.

Sunday, the Eagles added cushion to each of their wins going 9-3 and 8-1.

In game one, Michel scored Lecher on a single in the first inning to once again score first.

In the second, the Yellow Jackets knocked a home run to tie 1-1 before Eubanks and Allie Mason responded with solo home runs. Lecher also tallied an RBI in the second, bringing Bauer around.

CSC brought three more home in the third—Moody on an Allie Mason single; Owens on a Lecher sacrifice fly; and Allie

Mason on a Ludwig single.

Humphries kept momentum in the fourth stroking a 2-run homer in the fourth, bringing in the ninth run.

Jarecki nearly matched her performance from game one. She marked at 2.0 ERA, eight hits and three runs. But she only struck out six Sunday compared to 10 Saturday.

In the final game of the series, BHSU changed things up and scored first in the top of the first, but CSC responded with two of their own—Lecher on a Michel sacrifice fly; and Ludwig on a Humphries single.

All runs were tallied by the end of the second inning where CSC brought six around. Bauer scored on a Ludwig double, Karlin then brought Ludwig around on a 2-run home run; Michel followed with a home run; Eubanks and Wilhelm scored on doubles from Allie Mason and Bauer, respectively.

Kinsley Mason threw seven innings for seven hits and one run, while walking one and striking out two.

The Eagles will travel to Lakewood, Colorado, to play against Colorado Christian University Saturday and Sunday. The Cougars are 20-12 overall and 10-6 RMAC.

Rodeo teams finish in top 3 Shae Brennan Reporter

This weekend the women’s rodeo team showed what it’s capable of, taking second with 280 points at Eastern Wyoming College in Torrington, Wyoming, while the men’s team finished third with 320 points.

On the CSC women’s side, Jordan Hagedorn, senior of West Point, dominated. She took second place for women’s all-around, third in barrel racing, and first in team roping as header with partner Lance Neuerburg, junior of Gill, Colorado, as heeler. Teammate Brandi Cwach, junior of Geddes, South Dakota, also contributed to the team earning third in goat tying.

“I am very excited for our team,” Hagedorn said. “I know we have worked so very hard, so getting to the top was great for all of us and helped us really boost our confidence in ourselves and our horses as well.

“We have a very powerful women’s team and I think if we just keep doing what we are doing you will see the women’s team at the college finals no doubt.”

For the men’s team, Tate Petrak, freshman of Martin, South Dakota, finished third in steer wrestling. Cole Retchless, freshman of Bridgeport, finished third as team roping header with partner Levi Walter, of EWC, as heeler, and Prestyn Novak, junior of Newell, South Dakota, seized third in men’s all-around.

“As a team we have been working hard to improve and it has been paying off for us so far this semester,” Cwach said.

The teams will have to keep their winning attitudes throughout the weekend and into next week, as they won’t compete again until April 7-9 at Colorado State University, Fort Collins.

“I’m expecting for us to just keep working hard and everything else will fall into place,” Hagedorn said.

Staying busy, the rodeo team is hosting the Black Tie Calf Fry, its annual fundraiser, from 5-10 p.m. Friday in the Student Center Ballroom. Dinner will be provided at 6 p.m. while a silent and live auction will take place throughout. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

Beach umbrella Taking a beach umbrella has many benefits to the beach experience. One use is to mark your spot on the beach. Putting your belongings under the umbrella prevents people from stepping on it. Marking your area with an umbrella is also helpful while you are in the water. Swimming in the waves can move you farther down the beach. The beach umbrella is a simple visual reminder of how far you have drifted. Finally, the umbrella provides a respite from the UV rays.

Former Disney World intern shares motivational advice Torri Brumbaugh Reporter Chadron State alumna Sara Smith takes pride in her Chadron roots, especially since she was born and raised in town. When Smith felt something was missing in her life during her sophomore year of college at CSC, she left to find it. Her actions earned her a place as a speaker Tuesday evening in the Student Center Lakota Room while representing Women’s History Month.

Smith has become a common face seen on campus.

Not only is Smith a former student and cheerleader, she also works as an admissions representative for CSC.

Her path to becoming an admissions representative was greatly shaped by her experiences as an intern at the Disney College Program, she said.

Smith was selected for the Disney internship after an intense interview process starting with 40,000 to 50,000 applicants. After spending her entire life in Chadron, Smith left home to head to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

Smith took a semester off from school and started working in merchandising at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Smith impressed Disney Hollywood Studios Vice President Dan Cockerell and the executive members of many international Disney parks, earning her promotions throughout her internship.

Working at Disney pushed Smith out of her comfort

zone and led her to change her major from early childhood education when she returned to Chadron State. As an interdisciplinary major, Smith decided to re-apply to the Disney College Program.

“It’s crazy how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together to fit my future,” Smith says reflecting on how Disney changed her career path.

When graduation day rolled around for Smith, she was still in Florida working at Disney. Instead of walking across the stage to receive her diploma, she adorned Mickey Mouse ears and spent the day at the Disney parks.

As her presentation came to a close, Smith urged her audience to “find a passion” and “find a dream.”

Smith aimed to inspire all members of CSC with her quote, “Whether you’re 18, 19, or 45, never stop dreaming.”

Under Armour campaigns against mainstream pretty Afton Burns Reporter Under Armour recently launched a campaign, #ImPretty, that challenges the way women are viewed in campaigns while at the same time challenging the digital marketing industry.

Its focus is on women and the inner spirit that makes women who they are, because each individual is unique; each individual is outstanding; each individual is here for

a reason with the ability to conquer any task. The campaign recognizes women as being made of more than what’s seen at a first glance, or even a second take.

Its theme is straightforward and simple. A black background with colored words that come and go, but these words aren’t meaningless, these are the kind of words that echo in the viewer’s mind and make them stop and think about what is being implied.

ty.” As women, this is a phrase we have all heard one too many times, or wished we were one too many times. Often times we fail as women because we don’t recognize or embrace our inner spirit and instead we look to ads, marketing, and other people to see our self worth and to be called this trivialized word, “pretty.”

What comes to follow this three-worded phrase, “You’re so pretty,” is important. The ad displays these words, “Is still pretty much the highest compliment some people think you can give a woman.”

Wow. Can we just bask in the truthfulness of that statement for a moment?

Girls, from a young age have been trained through several different sources like movies, literature, kids at school, or printed images on the cover of a magazine sold at the local grocery store suggesting what “pretty” is and what it means to be “pretty.” If you don’t have the “wow” factors, you just aren’t “pretty.” Which is pretty sad like the campaign ad suggests next.

“Judging someone solely by how she looks is pretty unfair, You’re more than a pretty face,” the video also states.

This is so true. Women have an inner-spirit that goes deeper than the “pretty” face as the ad implies, “You’re also pretty strong, smart, tough, bold, fierce, brave.” It’s important to hear these words of encouragement and empowerment too.

It’s actually rare to find campaigns that focus their attention on everyday women like Under Armour has managed to do.

“We want women to know Under Armour is proud of your achievements, whether it’s in the gym, on the field, at work, or in any other part of your life,” Attica Jaques, the vice president of Under Armour, said.

The genuine care of Under Armour is shown through its campaigns time and time again and that’s what makes it worthy of our attention.

Under Armour has been recognized for creating powerful campaigns that speak truth

and empower women. Last year, it featured the famous African American ballerina, Misty Copeland, to embrace what it means to be a strong, independent, and hard-working female athlete.

“Being a part of the Under Armour Campaign family is so much bigger than myself as an individual,” Copeland said.

This specifically, is really what Under Armour is all about, being a part of something bigger. You don’t have to be an athlete to know what the company is addressing through these campaigns and that to me is actually pretty cool.

This #ImPretty campaign empowers the inner-spirits of who women are by focusing not just on the outer appearance of a woman, but rather her craft and self-accomplishment. This campaign isn’t just about selling a brand name, but more about honesty and genuine care. My applause and gratitude goes to Under Armour for glorifying and challenging the idea of what it means to be “pretty.” The campaign ad ends with this: “Just call me Pretty Amazing.”

Spring recitals brighten CSC Students entertain small audience at Honor’s Recital Brianna Wilson Reporter Outside, the cloudy sky seemed to cast a dreary feel into the Mari Sandoz Chicoine Atrium while the audience of roughly 20 waited for the Honor’s Recital to begin.

The afternoon’s first performer, Jedd Raymond, senior of Ainsworth, and Accompanist Bobby Pace, were greeted with applause which echoed loudly around stone and glass of the Atrium.

Raymond, while able to play all four types of saxophone (soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone), played the tenor, accompanied by Pace on the piano. He played only one piece but, unlike the other performers of that afternoon, he played two parts, “Sir Gawain Returns,” and “Luciano and Frederic,” both from “Beyond the Influence,” by Michael Stephens.

While she looked nervous, Natsuki Sato, junior applied music major of Oita-Shi, Japan, took over the piano after Pace and Raymond left the stage. Her song, “Nocturne in E-flat Major, Op. 9, No. 2,” by Frédéric Chopin, was a slow and somewhat mournful piece. The notes flowed together nicely and the tune had a bit of a lullaby feel to it, but it was a bit darker than most mothers probably play for their children at bedtime.

A break from the more traditional instruments, Jake

Voorhis, junior of Belle Fourche, South Dakota, played the guitar. While his instrument may not have been classical, his performing piece was: “Prelude No. 1,” by Heitor Villa-Lobos. There were times when he sounded like he may be a bit flat, but overall, he was a talented artist. There were several sliding notes in the song and he used the entire neck of the guitar, his hand quickly sliding from one end to the other while the fingers of his right picked quietly at certain strings.

Once Voorhis finished his piece, unplugged his guitar and exited the stage, sophomore of Kimball, Kallie Bush, came out to play the piano. “Andante,” the first part of “Piano Sonata in G Minor, Op. 49, No. 1,” by Beethoven, was a quick sounding piece, though it was just as flowing as Sato’s song, only with a much less mournful feel.

Pace followed Aydin Mack, trumpet player and sophomore of Alliance, onto the stage for the final performance. Théo Charlier wrote Mack’s piece, “Solo de Concours,” which included two parts where Mack used a mute and illustrated his control and ability to play both loud and soft.

No matter the instrument, it is always a hint at talent and control when one can play softly—anyone can play loud if you just blow enough air, but playing soft takes more practice and skill, especially to do it in a way that doesn’t sound airy and is in tune. Raymond also demonstrated a fantastic amount of control with the soft notes of his song and with this, I am speaking from experience. Playing softly on a woodwind is no easy feat.

Raymond, Sato, and Mack were also selected to play in the Nebraska Intercollegiate Band.

Shuler, Hafey exhibit wide array of talents at recital Roughly 30 people gathered in Memorial Hall’s Auditorium to listen to Assistant Professor, music, and Director of Brass Studies and Band Sidney Shuler, and Assistant Professor, music, Brooks Hafey.

They entered to applause.

Per the program, Shuler has participated in many orchestras and has played solo not only in the United States, but also in Spain and Russia. Since he has become the director of bands for CSC, his ensembles have participated in multiple clinics and summer camps. Shuler is a mem-

ber of the International Trumpet Guild, Music Educator’s National Conference and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Hafey also has an impressive background in performance and conducting, according to the program. He has performed in France, Italy and Norway, in addition to his performances within the states.

The first number of Friday night, “Concerto in C minor, Op. 35,” by Dmitri Shostakovich and arranged by T. Dokschitzer, contained four parts: “Allegretto,” “Lento,” “Moderato,” and “Allegro

con brio.”

Once the professors reentered the stage, to more applause, Hafey took up a seat at the clavinova, instead of the piano, and Shuler took his place facing the audience.

“Prayer of St. Gregory” was a solemn piece, emphasized by the organ setting on the clavinova.

It was exactly what one would imagine would go along with the prayer of a saint.

After this performance, there was a brief intermission in which the lights went up and there was a soft hum from the audience.

were replaced by latecomers to the recital. As the lights dimmed again, the audience once again fell silent and Hafey and Shuler took the stage.

Henri Tomasi’s “Tryptyque” had three parts, “Scherzo,” “Largo,” and “Saltarelle.”

Also containing three parts, Hafey and Shuler finished with “Sonata for Trumpet and Piano,”

by Eric Ewazen, but not before Hafey entered the stage alone for a few moments, followed briefly

by Shuler who told the audience, “one moment.” Shuler quickly disappeared off stage again while

Hafey proceeded to the piano looking amused.

“He (Shuler) forgot his mute,” Hafey explained as he sat.

Shuler soon returned, mute in hand, and they began the Ewazen number, which was broken down into “Lento – Allegro Molto,” “Allegretto,” and “Allegro con Fuoco.”

Shuler and Hafey exchanged a pleased smile once the song was over before both rose and took a bow together. They exited the stage to applause and, after the applause continued, they returned for another bow before leaving permanently.

Pavich humors CSC with small-town jokes Kira Fish Reporter After enduring a ride from Denver to Chadron in a propeller plane, comedian Matt Pavich performed to a small crowd of 30 students in the Bordeaux/Lakota/Ponderosa rooms of the Chadron State College Student Center at 7 p.m. Friday.

Pavich, seemingly used to performing in large cities, mentioned that he was immediately struck by Chadron’s lack of public transportation.

“I know you guys don’t have a subway here,” he said “I’m not even sure you have busses or a taxi. I need a taxi to the airport.

This is a big problem.”

Pavich brought up other aspects of city life besides the abundance of public transportation, such as the time he met a vegan with terrifying face tattoos while in a subway and a massive fight at a McDonald’s

restaurant he claimed to have witnessed, before moving on to critiquing corporations on social media.

“I think we’ve got, like, three months left on Earth,” Pavich went on to joke. “And I think it’s Google’s fault. Google has set the bar for crazy way too high. I go to Google with my deepest, darkest secrets. And I go to type it into Google, but before I can even get halfway, Google finishes my sentence, and a little box drops down,” only for him to find even stranger queries in the auto-suggestions box.

“Why did you come to Nebraska?” an audience member inquired when Pavich asked for questions about his life as a 27-year-old in New York City.

“My agent sent me an email, like, ‘Hey, they’re going to pay you this much to come to Chadron.’ I didn’t even look at the email, I just saw the amount and said, ‘Yeah, no doubt.’ Then I had to find Chadron,” he said.

He confessed to being hesitant after he found out how difficult it would be to get to Chadron, and that a propeller plane would be involved, but chose to “do it for the kids.”

Other lampooned topics included IKEA furniture assembly, Netflix dates, missing a flight overseas because Pavich misread the departure time on his ticket and ended up in the wrong country with a frozen bank account, Wi-Fi addictions, and a lifelong potato allergy that garners obnoxious comments from anyone who discovers that he has it.

According to Pavich, he grew up in Queens, New York. His biography on KP Comedy’s website, kpcomedy.com, states that he is also an actor, and has been awarded the LAwebfest best-actor award. He has also been in a series called “The Neighborhood” and is on “Joking Off,” on MTV2. He has accounts on Facebook and Twitter, and also has a YouTube channel called Handsome Dancer.
