AUTHOR, EDITOR OF NEBRASKALAND MAGAZINE TO VISIT CSC Jeff Kurrus, children’s book author and editor of NEBRASKAland magazine, is coming to CSC next week.

At 7 p.m. Monday, he will present a book reading of “A Tale of Jacob Swift,” and deliver a presentation titled, “Writing with a Camera,” in the Sandoz Center. At 11

a.m. Tuesday, Kurrus will host an open session about nature writing and wildlife photography in Burkhiser, Room 231. At 6 p.m. Wednesday, Kurrus will present “Cranes, Foxes, and NEBRASKAland Magazine” in the Library, Room 111.

Budget hearings end No funds for Math and Science project Jordyn Hulinsky

Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor In its most recent legislative session, the Nebraska Unicameral did not approve a bill seeking $21.2 million to overhaul the Math and Science building.

The bill, LB 755, sought $50,393,089 for renovations and construction at the three state colleges. CSC was seeking $21,281,664 for renovations and an addition to the Math and Science building—$8,425,094 for academic year 2016-17; $7,405,886 for AY 2017-18; and $5,450,684 for AY 2018-19.

In an email last week, CSC President Randy Rhine broke the news campus-wide.

“Chadron State College hoped to use funds from LB 755 to reno-

vate the Math and Science Building and this project remains important for the campus and the Nebraska State College System,” Rhine stated in his email.

LB 755 was rolled into LB 957, meaning the funding CSC was seeking was not passed.

“LB 957 provides an extension of LB 605, a program passed in the 2006 Legislature that provided funding to address deferred maintenance, repair and renovation, and facility replacement projects across the system,” Rhine stated.

While the news about Math and Science building wasn’t ideal, all was not lost.

In addition, Rhine noted that LB 605 permits the state colleges to use institutional matching funds and its extension will provide funds CSC needs to “com-

Now that LB 755 was rolled into LB 957, Rhine said they would continue to seek funding for the Math and Science project.

Rhine also wrote that he spoke Friday with NSCS Chancellor Stan Carpenter who assured Rhine that “the Math and Science project at CSC will remain the number one capital priority for the Board of Trustees going into next year’s biennial budget process. Math and Science will remain a high priority and I plan to continue working diligently with Chancellor Carpenter and others to secure funding from the Legislature for this project.”

The Activity Fee Board has met with all the clubs that turned in budget packets and is ready to make recommendations to Student Senate with club funding for the 2016-2017 school year.

Nathaniel Brown, AFB member, said he would be emailing club leadership that was indicated in the club packets, by today at the latest.

If clubs notice a cut in the amount from what they were asking for, the club can file an appeal to afb@csc.edu by 11:59 p.m. Friday.

Appeals will be heard beginning at 6 p.m. Monday. The clubs will be given hearings on first club, first available time slot basis.

The Board plans to present its recommendations to Senate on Monday, April 11. Student Senate will have the final say on how much money is allocated to each

club April 18.

For clubs to receive funding for the upcoming school year, the process is, step one, clubs turn in a budget packet to AFB; step two, clubs attend AFB hearings for the Board to ask questions to give advice to Senate about allocations; step three, AFB brings recommendations of funding to Senate; and step four, Senate allocates money to the clubs.

The members of the Board include three members from Senate, three members from CAB, and three at large members.

The Senate members are Brown, Gabi Brumfield, and Tierra Snyder.

The CAB members are Richard Heule, Trista Schell, and Tori Stepp.

The at large members are Teryn Blessin, Anas Haddadi, and Courtney LaMont. Molly O’Connell, CAB vice chair of finance, and Gavan Archibald, Senate vice president of finance, are the co-chairs.

CAB executive board positions are up for grabs Justine Stone News Editor Election nominations for CAB executive board are due Tuesday and close April 12. CAB representatives will vote for officers at the CAB meeting April 12. Senate will vote to approve the executive board members at its meeting April 18. The new officers will be sworn in during the CAB meeting April 19.

Clubs have spent $88,037.38 and

have $67,721.86 remaining in their accounts. CAB had spent $10,475.07 and had $4,724.93 remaining in its account at the beginning of the meeting.

Money is available for clubs to host booths at the circus on April 9.

Free Movie Night is Sunday. There will not be a Free Bowling Night for the rest of the semester.

CAB allocated soccer club’s $100 seed money to go toward its soccer tournament April 15.

Green asked clubs to bring ideas for next year’s Homecoming theme and activities to CAB meetings. He also asked clubs to bring ideas for New Student Orientation and Week of Welcome activities.

Chadron Chamber of Commerce will be hosting Bands on Bordeaux for the third year every Thursday in July. Bands on Bordeaux is an event

where bands, venders, and games on Bordeaux Street are available to the community. Market Development Director Danielle Lecher said NSO on Bordeaux will be Thursday, August 18.

Green said NSO on Bordeaux will go with NSO and Week of Welcome and there will be bands, food, venders, and games at the event that is open to the community, students, and new students and their parents. If clubs want to host booths at NSO on Bordeaux, they should contact Green.

CSC student posts bail Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor A court date for 19-year-old Dominique Smith has been set for April 13. Smith posted bail over the weekend, a county court spokesperson said Tuesday. His bail was set at 10 percent of $10,000.

Chadron police transported Smith to Dawes County Jail after arresting him in the early morning of Thursday, March 24, accusing him of multiple felony counts of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance police suspect is marijuana.

Acting on a tip from college staff members who reported smelling burning marijuana,

police served a warrant on Kent Hall, Room 237, at about 3:20 a.m. Thursday, where they arrested resident Dominique Smith, freshman of Aurora, Colorado, police stated in a press release issued late Thursday afternoon.

“Even though the arrest this morning involves a student on campus, we continue to work cooperatively with the college’s staff to identify and take any appropriate actions to make our campus as safe as possible,” Chadron Police Chief Tim Lordino stated in Thursday’s release.

In addition to arresting Smith, police seized “a cell phone, a mason jar with suspected marijuana, dryer sheets, small screens, about $580 in

U.S. currency, rolling papers, multiple bags of suspected marijuana (total weight approximately 5.4 ounces), a digital scale, a marijuana grinder, two glass pipes, and about 100 suspected marijuana cigarettes,” the release states.

Smith is accused of one count of “possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver (on public college grounds), a Class II Felony (28-416); possession of money used or intended to be used to facilitate a violation of 28-416, a Class III Felony; possession of marijuana more than one ounce and less than one pound, a Class II misdemeanor and possession of drug paraphernalia, an infraction,” the release states.

CSC hosts Scholastic Day Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor Chadron State College is hosting Scholastic Day for high school students Friday. The annual event will offer about 40 different competitions for high school students to compete in.

Sign-in for the day will begin in the Student Center at 8 a.m. and the last event on the schedule is lunch scheduled from 11 a.m. – 1: 30 p.m.

There will be four different sections of testing beginning at 8:30, 9:30, 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.

At 7 a.m., the Student Center will be open for students and sponsors to relax between events and the Eagle’s Grille Snack Bar will be open from 10:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Blue Key and Cardinal Key National Honor Societies will be guides in the buildings around campus. All the buildings will be open.

For entertainment throughout the day, the Student Center will feature The Pit with pool tables, ping pong, and board games, the hospitality room for teachers and drivers, the cafeteria and bookstore will be open for visitors, campus tours will be given for those who meet at the information desk, and dance

lessons will be provided in the Ballroom.

Fort Robinson horse drawn wagon ride tours and an interactive trailer, featuring X-Box, Wii, and other video games, will be available in front on the Clock Tower.

In Burkhiser, the Cabela’s wildlife display will be open and at 11:15 a.m., spectators are welcome at the Eagle Cookoff.

Self-guided tours, a gift shop, and Fine Art Exhibition of American Parks will be open in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center.

Planetarium shows will be showing in the Math and Science Building at 8:30, 9:30, and 10:30 a.m. Geology Museum tours and a scavenger hunt will also be featured in Math and Science.

Tours of Reta King Library will be available by request. The Learning Center will be welcoming guests with treats, the IT Help Desk will offer a test of your knowledge, and a putt-putt golf game will all be open in the library.

A Human G-nome tour will be featured on the main walk way through campus and volleyballs will be available to check-out at the Student Center Info Desk for playing at the pits behind the dormitory complex.

A word from the Student Senate President There was no Senate meeting this week because of spring break.

Last week I traveled to Washington D.C. as a delegate for Chadron State College and the State of Nebraska to the AIPAC conference. There were more

than 400 Student Government presidents at the conference as well. We were able to discuss issues that they deal with on their campuses and make connections throughout the nation.

Along with discussing Israel’s relation with the United States, we also brainstormed ideas for our campuses to better them. I have come back with a lot of information on the conference and other college campuses to better our college. If you have any questions pertaining these items please email myself or visit my office hours.

Thinking forward to next year, Senate would like to be looking ahead to see

what students wish to have on our campus. If you have any ideas of events or speakers you wish to take place on our campus for next year please visit with me in my office hours from 2-6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and from 3:30-8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

Student Senate would like to remind you as it gets closer to Scholastic Day this Friday to please be safe and to make wise decisions. Decisions make up the nature of who we are as a person.

EDITORIAL–THE EAGLE’S VIEW

Republicans should act

P

resident Barack Obama recently nominated Judge Merrick Garland, a figure respected by liberals and conservatives alike, to the Supreme Court. Now, the Republicans in the Senate are showing their prowess in a battle, vowing to block the replacement of Justice Antonin Scalia until a new president is voted into office. GOP leaders refuse to consider Garland, saying that the decision should be made by the American people by them choosing the next president who in turn could nominate a different individual than Garland. This showdown could possibly be more fraught than some of the most vicious Supreme Court fights because Obama’s choice could lead to a less conservative Supreme Court, possibly for quite a while.

Obama has expressed admiration for Garland saying, “He is one of America’s sharpest legal minds.” He made the case that Garland was extremely qualified for the job in terms of temperament, experience and legal knowledge. He also believes that any try to block or ignore his nomination could only be based on political motivations.

Senate Republicans do not plan to have hearings on Garland or vet on him, therefore refusing to vote on his nomination at all. Democrats argue that there are still 10 months left in Obama’s term, giving the Senate plenty of time to confirm a new justice.

But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has expressed that the Senate is steadfast in its determination to go without hearings for Obama’s justice nomination.

“The American people may well elect a president who decides to nominate Judge Garland for Senate consider-

ation,” McConnell said. “The next president may also nominate someone very different. Either way, our view is this: Give the people a voice in the filling of this vacancy.”

While all this determination seems great for the Republicans, they are making a grave mistake. The refusal to consider Garland as the next Supreme Court justice is not in the public’s favor, according to a poll done by the Pew Research Center. A majority of Americans believe that the Senate should hold hearings.

Only about 38 percent of the individuals polled believe that the Senate should hold off on hearings.

Going against the wishes of the public is not a smart decision by lawmakers who are coming up for reelection. However, there may be a way around the Senate’s blockade if Obama would choose to invoke his rights as our president. The Constitution’s Article II spells out the powers of the presidency, and shows that the president has the authority to summon one or both of the house of Congress into session, if it is in an extraordinary occasion. It seems that it is under Obama’s discretion to what should be considered extraordinary.

However great of an idea this would be, the Senate is still under Republican control, so it could hide away in its chamber and still do nothing about Garland.

The Senate is only hurting itself by refusing to act on the nominee. Republicans do not need to worry that Garland is a democrat, he is not a partisan, but a high quality jurist. If the Senate was smart, the group would nominate Garland, before a far more liberal or less respected nominee is chosen. If they stick to their position, the Republicans lose, along with the American people.

Syerra’s Square Another heartache felt around the world Syerra Wycoff Bagshaw Columnist March 22 marks another day in recent years that a city of innocent people was targeted and subjected to victimization by terrorist attacks. The city of Brussels, Belgium, experienced a brutal attack—two blasts in Brussels airport, and one other in a busy metro station. Thus far at least 30 people have been killed and hundreds have been injured. The police force released a picture of the possible suspects and shortly thereafter received a tip from a taxi driver who believed he had driven the three assailants to the airport, two of which are believed to have died in the explosion, while the other remains at large.

The police raided the residence in question and found an ISIS flag, a nail bomb, and numerous other paraphernalia that was confiscated. While ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack, authorities say it is not possible to state for certainty who is responsible for the attacks and promises attacks in the future of worse caliber.

Despite the recent string of terroristic threats and attacks, NATO and numerous other world leaders have stood up and taken stance in the war against terror; during times such as these it is important to remember that we are all one world, one people, despite our many differences. While there are always going to be cruel extremists who claw for power and desolation, they are not a representative of people as a whole, and we as a congregation can stand and fight against such barbarous groups. It would be easy to allow attacks such as these to force us to turn on each other and be fearful, but rather they should unite us in our fight for a better future. My heart goes out to the victims and their families.

“There is more power in unity than division,” Emanuel Cleaver said.

When’s the right time to make the call?

Sara Tweet Photo Editor Every child and every family is different. But there’s one issue that every family has to address at some point.

How young is too young for a cell phone? Each family has a different set of values, but sometimes parents have to tailor this issue to each specific kid in a family.

In my family, my older sister did not get a cell phone until she was a junior in high school because there was no need for one before then. But, I got one when I was a freshman because I was going to Washington D.C. for the second year in a row for a competition. My parents wanted to be able to get a hold of me in case I got separated from them in the city.

The main problem with families and cell phones are the parents that give their kid a phone just because all of their friends have one, and that is wrong. The parents shouldn’t be made to feel like they have to give their kid a phone.

Children can have fun outside with friends and if they want to get together, they can use the house phone or their parent’s cell phone.

In my opinion, the children that are in the second grade, or younger, and have a phone are way too young.

I don’t know why we have started to give kids phones at such young ages. Has it really come down to parents or care providers just handing a child a phone because they are getting fussy or too much to handle? Why are we doing something that is convenient to us at the time, but does nothing to serve our child or to fix the initial problem?

When I drove past a park during a nice, warm day, I saw a parent with her children, and they were sitting on a bench playing on a phone. Kids won’t learn anything if they have their faces in their phones. Kids learn by example and some parents just aren’t setting the best examples.

“A child can learn so much more through the power of play than they would with an app on a phone,” my sister Alora, an early childhood education major, said.

We also have to think about whether or not the child is at an age that they are responsible enough to have a phone.

Having a phone is a lot of responsibility, and when are they old enough to underst and those responsibilities? Maybe more importantly, are they able to decide what is safe and not when it comes to their phone?

If a child has a smart phone, they are going to get on the Internet, which entails many safety concerns, such as sexual predators and cyber bullies. In today’s world if a child is being bullied, it’s hard for teachers and parents to know because a lot of it is done through a text message or social media sites.

Because of the threat, when you do decide to give your child a phone, monitoring and limiting usage is important. Children and teenagers have a tendency to not want to talk to adults about embarrassing things, like being bullied or harassed, especially when they think it will get them in trouble. It is the parents’ responsibility to pay attention to what their child is doing on their phone and to make a smart decision about when it is time to give them a phone.

The best thing to do if you feel like your child needs a phone in order to contact you is to start out with a simple “dumb” phone that doesn’t have access to the Internet and only allows them to call or text you. You should make sure that when your kid does have a phone that they can only have it for a limited time during the day. Children and teenagers do not need their phone unless they are away for school or sporting events. Giving them unlimited access to a phone gives them the feeling they are entitled to it even though the parents most likely pay for it. It should be given as a privilege and as a sign of trust.

Most importantly, a phone should be given at an appropriate age and only when it becomes necessary.

To become a member of the team an individual must have one semester of CAB experience to run for office. CAB Chair is the exception, which requires two full semesters of CAB experience. Joining the executive board team enables you to give back to your campus, learn the inner workings of the college, and hone your leadership skills. Galaxy series Jay Feltson Reporter

Last week CSC proudly presented the Galaxy Series which featured recording artist Katie Kosins, who is an ASCAP awardwinning artist. Kosins was born and raised in Detroit and was influenced early on in life by artists such as Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Kosins usually travels across the country performing not only at colleges, but other theaters that the city may have to offer.

Last week was Kosins’ first time being in Chadron and was welcomed by a nice turnout for her performance which lasted nearly two hours. The event took place in Memorial Hall’s Auditorium at 7 p.m.

Thursday, March 24.

The CSC vocal jazz group accompanied Kosins’ performance; she told the crowd in between songs that she had the option to bring her own band. Instead chose to use the college’s band even though she had never heard them perform prior to coming to the campus. She started off by singing three of her own compositions, which were titled “Free and Easy,” “You Better Love Me While You May,” and “I Keep Going Back to Joe’s.”

She then switched gears by allowing the vocal jazz group to exit the stage while she had a drink of water before going on to sing other songs. One of the more notable artists whose songs she sang was Duke Ellington, who had a notable career which spanned

close to 50 years.

In a more interesting segment in the night, Kosins stepped out of the spot light and let one of the band members she did travel here with play music.

The interesting part was that as he was playing music Kosins was painting which she later told the crowd was a hobby that she had developed over time.

This took a total of five minutes and once Kosins was done painting, she then auctioned the picture off to the crowd, stating that she usually paints on bigger surfaces and then gives the money she makes from the auction back to the school. Since the canvas she was painting on was so small she started the bidding off at $15, the painting finally sold for $35.

In between segments, Kosins opened up the room for people to ask her or anyone she was with questions. Many of the younger fans in the crowd flooded her with questions about how she got her start and who was her main influence.

Toward the end of the night, after Kosins was done singing, she encouraged people in the audience to come get autographs and speak to her directly. She then left the auditorium and sat down at a stand that had been set up while everyone was inside, the stand also had CDs for sale.

The Chadron State track and field team sent about 30 athletes to the first outdoor meet of the season; competing at the Yellow Jacket Spring Open at Black Hills State University, Spearfish, South Dakota. The Eagles opened the outdoor season with nearly a dozen athletes hitting personal bests.

Distance events shined for the Eagles on the women’s side. Nicky Banzhaf, sophomore of Chadron, was a double-winner, capturing both the 1,500 meter race in 4 minutes, 52.22 seconds and 5,000 in 18:43.89.

Banzhaf felt that the transition from the indoor season to outdoor went well.

“Our first meet back, I felt really strong,” Banzhaf said. “I’m excited to see how the season progresses.”

Banzhaf ’s time of 4:52.22 in the 1,500 is a career best. Margaret Vinton, junior of North Platte, finished second in the 5,000 running 19:09.84; and fourth in the 1,500 running 5:03.88. Both marks are career bests for Vinton.

“The 1,500 is a race that is a little far out of my element,” Banzahf said. “I’m generally better as the races get longer. I was really pleased with that time, though. It was a big improvement from my time last year. In the 5k, I’m really hoping to hit good provisional time. Ideally, I want to be around the 17:10 zone.”

Ashlynn Hanson, sophomore of Seward; and Keri Ruff, junior of Eaton, Colorado, also placed second in hammer throw and discus, respectively. Hanson hit 168-6 in hammer and Ruff reached 140 in discus.

On the men’s side, Skyler Hoopes, senior of Lusk, Wyoming, led the way winning the pole vault, clearing 15-7 1/4. Distance also finished high for the men. Alejandro Garcia, senior of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, was a double runnerup in both the 1,500 and 5,000 with times of 3:58.71 and 15:27.99, respectively.

Cancelled softball games will not be rescheduled The softball games originally scheduled for March 25-26 against New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas, will not be rescheduled to play, according to Athletic Director Joel Smith.

The games were cancelled Friday morning due to the weather between Chadron and Las Vegas. The storm caused 15 of 25 RMAC games to be cancelled.

The Eagles will host Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado, Saturday and Sunday. The Skyhawks are 10-23, 7-13 in conference play. Game times are set for noon and 2 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday.

Art show displays variety, simplicity Brianna Wilson Contributor The artwork of Alison Harris was displayed in Gallery 239 of Memorial Hall and was relatively simple in its image, though upon closer inspection, reveals a lot of detail.

The display is in a linear fashion, the drawings lined around the room as though a line were drawn straight through their centers—a reflection of the lines in her own drawings.

She uses ink and a small bit of water color to capture the models of her artwork.

Every piece has ink and most have no color to them aside from the black on her white paper. Most of the drawings portray women in various poses and stages of their lives though all look relatively

young. Christine, Heidi, and Heather appeared to be the names of her main models and there was a special attention paid to the features of the face. The pieces are displayed on a black wall with soft lighting that only seems to enhance the shadows she uses in the details of her work.

Two pieces are displayed side by side and in the center of the line of her work, making them jump out and catch the eye more than the rest. “Anticipation – Version 1” and “Anticipation - Version 2” are made from ink and water color, like the rest of the drawings in her display; however, these two hold more color in them than the others. The figure in the painting is actually in color, wearing a black dress and red lipstick, she appears to be waiting to go out somewhere. The first of the

two has less defined lines and there are areas where the water color in the image appears to have dripped down the painting. The second has lines that are well defined and while the color sometimes drifts out of those lines, it stays within the realm of where the mind of the beholder would expect it to be.

Another piece, “Boojum – 2nd Study,” stands out among the lineup although it is fairly easily to be missed if not paying close attention.

It almost has a way of hiding behind the door of the entrance, however, it is one of the most unique among the display because of the model used—a dog. One lying down but not asleep, curled up on the floor.

The drawing is again with ink and appears to be looking down on the somewhat sad looking canine.

Graves lecturer inspires attendees, teaches about entrepreneurship Melanie Nelson Reporter Terrie Wood, CSC business professor, gave a lecture on small business and life as part of the spring Graves Lecture Series, 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 22 in the Reta King Library.

CSC hired Wood last fall, but this is not her first time teaching here. Thirty years ago, she taught at CSC for a 10-year span.

The last 20 years she has been doing business consulting, event planning, and strategic planning for nonprofit companies. Wood’s speech related entrepreneurship principles to our day-to-day choices.

“I feel like it’s everything we do in life: business,” she said.

First she talked about “value clarification,” or the things we care most about in our lives. She explained the importance of knowing what your business stands for and what your purpose is.

Her second point involved pleasure versus pain, and the choices we make.

“The truth is, we work harder to avoid pain than we do to gain pleasure,” Wood said.

Her example was getting into a relationship not because we truly love the other person, but because of a fear of being alone.

This circles back to value clarification. Do business owners truly value integrity, or are they just trying to save face so they don’t lose customers?

Wood said we must try to move

forward toward what we want instead of avoiding the bad things. She defined entrepreneurship as risking everything to build a business that produces something people want.

Wood said you have found your small business “when you can combine what you love with something that people are willing to pay for.”

She said we are the entrepreneurs of our own life, and we risk everything every time we have to make a hard choice. We have to get past the fear, and follow the values we set.

Tuesday is the final Graves Lecture this semester. Social and Communication Arts Assistant Professor Janice Haynes’ speech will be “Romance and Marriage Plots: Restoration for Family in Narratives of Single Mothers.”

Black Tie Calf Fry set for Saturday Janelle Kesterson Opinion Editor The CSC rodeo team is hosting its annual Black Tie Calf Fry this Saturday. The event is the team’s annual fundraiser. There will be a roast beef dinner along with Rocky Mountain Oysters and live entertainment. Tickets can be purchased from any rodeo team member in advance for $15 or $20 at the door.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. for a silent and a live auction. The si-

lent auction will have more than 75 items that the rodeo team members donated. The Chadron Federal Credit Union is putting a 2008 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD 6.6L turbo diesel pickup with 181,200 miles up for the live auction. Chadron Credit Union will keep $18,000, but anything over that will be donated to the rodeo team.

CO native writes, discusses life with addict Sarah Townsend Lifestyles Editor In Karin Mitchell’s debut novel, “Between Families,” she creates the story of Seffra Morgan, a 12-year-old dealing with a drug addicted mother.

Mitchell sets the book in the 1990s in St. Louis and details the struggle of Seffra’s life taking care of herself and her mother. Seffra knows that her mother is not perfect, but trips to Chicago show Seffra a glimpse of what her life could be like with a sober mother.

Seffra struggles to keep herself fed, while being harassed and bullied at school during a vulnerable time in her life.

When she begins to be sexually abused by a male friend of her moth-

er’s, Seffra decides to attempt to take her own life. Readers should be warned about the graphic nature of the abuse that Seffra endures.

After some teenagers find Seffra clinging to life, she is sent to the hospital then to Castlerock, a residential treatment center. She learns that there are many children out there with problems similar to hers and she struggles to adapt to a life supervised by psychiatrists and institution workers.

Just as Seffra and her now-sober mother are making progress toward being a family again, tragedy strikes and Seffra decides that the only way out of the institution is for her to be placed in foster care. She improves her behavior at this institution and decides to change her life for herself. She finally

takes charge of her own life. This book leaves the reader wondering what exactly will become of 12-year-old Seffra Morgan.

A page turner, this book calls attention to the idea of institutionalizing children, the shame that follows sexual abuse, personal identity, and the struggles that surround the addicted and their families. This novel begins with a bang and keeps the reader involved in Seffra’s story of overcoming all the obstacles thrown at her.

Mitchell is a native of the Midwest and now resides in Colorado. She teaches writing at Colorado Mountain College, Glenwood Springs, and writes and skis in the mountains. She spent some time working in social services which led the inspiration for this book.

CSC students get their ‘drag’ on Evan L.Brooks Reporter Chadron State’s Residence Life Association (RLA) was out for a cause Thursday, as it hosted ‘Cancer is a Drag’, an event put together for the sake of having light-hearted fun while maintaining a serious purpose.

To help achieve that goal, pamphlets were placed on each viewer’s seat that offered information about any questions that some students may have but feel uncomfortable asking about gender identities. The RLA also looked to raise funds for cancer research through the Cancer is a Drag foundation.

“I contacted the Cancer is a Drag foundation in Europe to make sure it was okay to use their logo of the ribbon and legs,” Katrina Hurley, 22, senior of Seward, said. “They were very accommodating and helped by giving tips to make a great drag show.”

In hopes of having a transgender diversity program, RLA gathered many CSC students to dress up in drag and entertain an audience full of their peers. All acts went on with names different from what is found on their birth certificate.

Some acts were group efforts, while others went on solo. One of the group acts was performed

by Fifth Harmony, who danced to a song titled “Work from Home.”

The group was composed of Hector Bustillos, 20, junior of Gillette, Wyoming; Kishawn Tualaulelei, 22, senior of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii;

Aspen Eubanks, 19, sophomore of Broomfield, Colorado; Pila Cha, 20, sophomore of Stockton, California; and Gabriela Perez, 20, junior of Sioux City, Iowa.

“I actually got asked to perform in the group kind of last minute,” Eubanks said. “They needed a fifth person and I was happy to fill that spot. Knowing it was a cancer event was motivation enough.”

The event saw many more performances, with some performers even performing on multiple occasions.

“I did not expect the turnout that we got,” Hurley said. “It was an amazing turnout for the event.

I had projected about 50-75 people coming, with 75 pushing it, but we had over 160 people show up to the event. I hope to make the event even bigger next year.”

Considering the entertainment provided, coupled with a positive message, the event shows a great deal of promise for expansion in the future. Free refreshments don’t hurt either.

“Having a drag show to raise cancer awareness was a great way to get the student body involved,” Eubanks said. “A ton of people showed up.”

“I feel that the event definitely served its purpose,” Hurley added.

“Through RLA we try to make enough events that every student will want to attend at least one that peaks their interest.

“Through this event I think we hit a different demographic than we have before, and that in itself made the event a success.”
