America is on the Trump Train Melanie Nelson News Editor In a tight race Tuesday night, Donald Trump edged past Hillary Clinton to win the president-elect title. With Arizona, Michigan, and New Hampshire still not finalized as of Wednesday evening, Trump has 279 electoral votes to Clinton’s 228.

Around 1 a.m. MT Wednesday, Trump took the stage at his watch party in the Hilton New York, to announce that Clinton had just called him to concede, and give his victory speech.

“No dream is too big. No challenge is too great. Nothing we want for our future is beyond our reach,” Trump said.

Nebraska voted 60 percent in favor of Trump, and gave him all five electoral votes.

Dawes County voted 70.17 percent for Trump.

Nebraska is one of two states that has adopted the Congressional District Method of distributing their electoral votes. This means that the electoral votes can be split between more than one candidate, as Maine chose to do, giving Trump one vote and Clinton three.

“These states allocate two Electoral Votes to the popular vote winner, and then one each to the popular vote winner in each Congressional district (2 in Maine, 3 in Nebraska) in their state. This creates multiple popular vote contests in these states, which could lead to a split Electoral Vote,” according to 270towin.com.

Other notable Nebraska state races were the District 43 legislative race and the referendum no. 426, which was on the ballot to repeal or retain the death penalty ban.

In the District 43 senatorial race, Col. Tom Brewer slid past incumbent Al Davis with 52 percent of the votes, as of the final unofficial report.

Students, senators discuss new mascot Melanie Nelson News Editor Sen. Josh Mayer started the Senate hosted open forum Thursday, Nov. 3 with his request for $4,300 for a new mascot from the same company in Omaha that made the Lil’ Red suit for the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Mayer has contacted athletic director Joel Smith who is looking for funds within the athletic department to help cover the cost.

One student found issue with the proposed design of the new mascot.

“I don’t feel like it’s unique to our campus,” Stephanie Alfred, junior of Mitchell, said. “I feel like it’s a copy of Lil’ Red. We’re not UNL, is the thing.

We’re CSC. We need something unique to us.”

Another student felt that it is more appropriate for the athletic department to cover the cost, rather than using Senate funds, because he felt a new mascot is primarily benefitting that department.

One question posed was whether the current Elmo will be replaced with the new one, or working as a team. Mayer said that he has been in contact with the current person acting as Elmo and they are supportive of the new costume. Mayer said he didn’t know exactly how it was going to work, but he is fine with having one or two mascots at a time.

“It can be two people, or it can be just him, or it can be a mixture of the two,” Mayer said. “But you know I’m not going to step on his toes.”

Another inquiry was about the durability of the inflatable suit, if it could withstand poor weather and rough contact from children. One attendee said that Lil’ Red withstands all kinds of weather so that should not be a problem. Mayer said that Lil’ Red has a chaperone that keeps children from harming the suit, which could be a solution.

There was discussion that students’ school spirit, and possibly even student retention, could be boosted from the upgraded mascot. Along with that, having a mandatory student seating section at games was suggested.

“Kids love those inflatable mascots, because you’re able to do so much more with them,” Todd Roenfeldt, senior of Cozad, said.

“I think that’s something we could really focus on, is getting a student section, and if we do invest in this, have that mascot work to hype up the crowd a lot more,” Senate President Katrina Hurley said.

Secondly, Hurley brought up the “Student Health 101” monthly email that Senate is currently investing in.

“I’m ready to axe that, I’m tired of it,” Alfred said.

Mayer said that he does not like receiving the emails, but still thought it is a good way to reach a lot of students and provide information for those students who may be seeking it.

One student proposed that Senate host a monthly program to support mental and physical health, which would cost less than continuing the emails. Others didn’t think students would feel comfortable going to a face-to-face program and would rather read about it on their own.

Sen. Carly Slaght suggested that Senate should stick with the emails for now, so they could take more time to think of a better alternative.

“We definitely should renew it for this semester,” Slaght said. “We can’t just take this avenue away from the students, because we don’t have a better option right now.”

One student was concerned that renewing “Student Health 101” would only put off the issue for yet another year, and would not be resolved before the current senators graduate in May.

“You’ve already had a whole year to look into something else, so my concern if you vote on it again and you say that you’re going to look into it next year, is that it won’t get done again,” Jordyn Hulinsky, senior of St. Paul, said.

Sen. Johnathan Sayaloune brought up posting “Student Health 101” on CSC online so it would still be available for students, yet wouldn’t clutter their email inbox.

Next, Hurley announced a new Christmas tree auction idea for a Senate charity fundraiser. Senate would buy 3-foot artificial trees and clubs would decorate them to be auctioned off to the community. All proceeds would go to local children.

Mayer liked the idea but was concerned that there was not sufficient time to plan and get everything done. Hurley assured him there was already a timeline in place.

“My concern is going to be advertising to the community, getting the community involved, that’s going to be bigger issues than getting the trees decorated,” Student Trustee Coy Clark said.

Hurley said there will be posters put up all around town and campus, radio advertising, and an all-campus email will be sent out.

The next discussion point was Senate incentives. Partial tuition waivers was one possible incentive brought up.

One student asked if Senate had asked administration if that was even a possibility. Hurley said she had not, because she wanted the backing of Senate and the students first.

“I think it’s a bad idea, waivers or scholarships,” Roenfeldt said. “I think it sets a horrible precedent to have a singular group of students voting to give themselves a benefit.”

Cody Cooper, senior of Gothenburg, brought up that if the student already had a full-tuition

scholarship, then the Senate waiver incentive would be voided. Roenfeldt said that actually the waiver would go through first and then the student would be refunded whatever was left over of their scholarship.

“You’re essentially voting to give yourselves cash,” Roenfeldt said.

Hurley said that our sister schools, Wayne and Peru State College, give their senators incentives.

“There’s enough state colleges that do it for their senators that it’s like laying a foundation to say ‘Hey other colleges do it, we may want to look into it,’” Hurley said.

Hulinsky added that just because other schools have Senate incentives, doesn’t mean CSC has to follow them. She also raised the concern that if Senate gives themselves scholarships, other clubs will feel entitled to do the same, and it will diminish the Senate budget.

“The Senate budget is student fees. Why should I have to pay student fees so that another student on campus can directly benefit from that in cash?”

Roenfeldt asked.

Cooper brought up that other clubs put in a lot of hours working to impact campus and they fundraise to pay for their own personal expenditures.

“If a club wants to do something they have to go out and work for it,” Cooper said. “We don’t just get those types of fees to spend on ourselves handed to us.”

Hurley said that the original purpose for bringing up incentives was to give senators something small to reward them for all their hours of work and to try to make senatorial elections more competitive.

The forum ended with student attendees sticking with a negative stance on waivers or using student activity fees at all to fund Senate incentives.

Senators discussed the possibility of doing monthly events instead of “Student Health 101,” but there was no longer time to discuss those possibilities as the subscription is due Friday. The vote was passed with a count of 12-5.

Senate President Katrina Hurley reported that she will continue look-

ing into waivers for senators and will report back to Senate so they can continue to research incentives and/ or scholarships for senators next year.

David Nesheim, interim director of assessment, was allocated $180 for six $30 Amazon gift cards that will be given to six randomly selected students who complete the NSSE survey that is sent out to a select number of first-year students and a

select number of senior students.

Hurley said that there will be an online vote Wednesday to reimburse senators who went on the Student Senate trip to Peru State College. The total cost for gas and food reimbursement was $1,847.03. An online vote, that opened at 8:13 a.m. Wednesday via EagleMail, had to be responded to by 5 p.m. Wednesday. By that deadline, there were five yes-votes

and four abstained-votes. According to Hurley, the vote does not carry because there was not a quorum by deadline. A quorum is two-thirds plus one and there are 16 senators.

In the past Hurley has said that any allocation more than $1,000 would first need to be discussed at an open forum before going to a vote.

CAB plans holiday events

Clubs were asked to sign up if they want to decorate a Christmas tree for the Holiday Giving Christmas Tree Event Senate is hosting in December at CAB’s meeting Tuesday. Clubs will have from Nov. 28 until Dec. 2 to decorate the tree and the bidding on the trees will be Dec. 5-12. CAB allocated no more than $50 for each club to buy decorations to decorate the trees.

NAMI is planning a holiday meal for international students and students who do not go home for the holidays. The meal is tentatively scheduled for Dec. 18 and the club is now in the planning stages of the event.

CAB approved Amanda Jeter as the third CAB member of the Activity Fee Board.

Vice Chair of Finance Gavan Archibald reported clubs have spent $32,282.82 and $172,221.41 remaining in clubs’ accounts, and CAB has $12,232.63 remaining.

Anyone interested in helping plan a Casino Night should attend a planning meeting Tuesday after the CAB meeting.

There will be a soccer tournament at 7 p.m. Nov. 18, and a Native American Club Pow Wow Nov. 19.

There will be no CAB meeting Nov. 22 for fall break.

The $6 million Chadron Area Aquatics and Wellness Center will open its doors to Chadron State College Jan. 10, 2017, offering a variety of amenities, course credit and work study opportunities.

The updated facility will hold a reconfigured existing pool and expanded recreational pool, expanded locker rooms with private showers, six swimming lanes (25-meter), waterslide & toddler slide, toddler swim area and spray feature, zero-entry pool entrance, diving tower, splash pad and water feature, outdoor sun deck, year-round indoor facilities, therapy pool, separate therapy pool, separate changing room, zero-depth entry ramp, walking track, and a community meeting/ party room.

“The building will be substantially com-

plete by Jan. 10, 2017, which is when the facility will be open to students at no charge with a valid student ID,” Brandon Girard, supervisor of the Chadron Area Aquatics and Wellness Center, said.

Free swimming and special classes, like water aerobics, will be soon to follow for everyone, Girard said.

Students are eligible to begin taking classes for course credit at the facility, under the instruction of Donna Ritzen, associate professor of health, physical education and recreation.

Work study and internships will also be available to students through the college.

“There are probably 100 benefits (from the Aquatics Center,” Ritzen said. “It will give students hands-on experience to be able to go out and teach.”

Ritzen also said that a number of HPER classes will be able to use the center for class purposes, as well as the athletic programs for injury rehabilitation.

The vote is in—accept the pres. elect Although many people in the United States are dismayed about the way the 2016 presidential election ended, there is no way to change the results now. The public has spoken, and potentially the greatest upset that our generation will see has occurred.

Donald Trump is the president-elect. You may be shocked or surprised at the results that came in early Wednesday morning, but it is not hard to see that this is a political change that has been brewing for a long time.

Even Hillary Clinton had to give a concession speech that she never expected she would have to deliver. However, there is a lesson to be taken from the words that Hillary spoke to the crowd in a hotel ballroom in Midtown Manhattan.

“Donald Trump is going to be our president,” she said. “We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead. Our constitutional democracy enshrines the

peaceful transfer of power. And we don’t just respect that, we cherish it.”

No matter what candidate you were rooting for during the election, it is over now, and we need to graciously accept Donald Trump into office. This is important to do because an election season leaves the country divided, and this year’s season was no different. If the entire country does not accept Trump as the new president then the division leaves the country vulnerable.

“Now it’s time for America to bind the wounds of division,” Trump said at his victory speech. “To all Republicans and Democrats and Independents across the nation, I say it is time for us to come together as one united people.”

If the country does not unify under Donald Trump, it will undermine his image, which affects the way that other countries view our stability. Analysts

Clinton’s concession speech was an attempt to keep the peace in America. A peaceful transfer of power is one of the things that has allowed the democracy in the United States to work for so long. People refusing to stand behind a new president does not convey the diplomatic handover that we need.

Now is the time to start acting like we are citizens of the greatest country in the world again. It is time to stand together as one nation to fix the problems we might be facing inside our country and the problems we might be facing around the world.

We are not saying that you have to be pleased with the election, but we are saying that you need to grin and bear it. The worst will be yet to come if we let the dissent between parties linger.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Reader conveys disappointment To the Editor: As a military veteran who swore an oath to defend the U.S. Constitution, (long before many of you were even in high school), few things are nearer and dearer to my heart than the freedom of the press. I must also remark that it took considerable gusto and courage for your editorial board to exercise its opinion last week by endorsing Donald Trump for President.

However, your freedom comes with a set of responsibilities. Your duties and obligations as members of the 4th estate extend beyond merely exercising free speech as a virtue in itself. You need to responsibly practice your trade, and I cannot bring myself to congratulate or laud the editorial board simply on the merit of having a terrible opinion and the subsequent gall to put it into print.

I’ve been busily buried in the throes of my own election-season journalism woes lately, so I hadn’t had time to read the piece until Monday evening when a former Eagle columnist tagged me in the link on Facebook. I was taken aghast when I was asked to explain it, and I still can’t defend it. I cannot condone your reckless, repugnant, negligent editorial decisions. Patting you on the back for your collective bad judgement would demonstrate an inability to think critically on my part.

I won’t stoop to your editorial board’s level.

I once advised some of you that if people are pissed off about what you write, you are doing something right. But it’s now clearly necessary that I caveat my statement—it’s not just about pissing off your readers, but more-so about pissing them off for the right reasons. In that task you, have failed the public you are supposed to be informing. Here’s why.

A common tactic endorsed by scoundrels and despots around the world (and on your own campus) has been to try and silence the press when we print unfavorable or unflattering things. It comes as no surprise that people who seek power directly benefit from the public not knowing what is going on.

Donald Trump is no different.

Trump has a lengthy record of filing strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP) in an attempt to punish and silence his critics—an alarming trend which a committee of media lawyers at the American Bar Association chose to study further. According to The New York Times, the report concluded that Trump is a “libel bully” who files many meritless suits attacking opponents, none of which

have ever won in court.

However, the A.B.A. public relations and marketing department ironically feared Trump would sue them, threatened to kill the phrase “libel bully” and refused to publish the report unless it was edited to soften the “harsh language.” The A.B.A., in part thanks to the push back it received after The Times’ reporting, finally grew a backbone and published the report as written.

That said, I am a card-carrying Republican, and I am not arguing that you should have endorsed Hillary Clinton. I don’t think newspapers should endorse candidates at all, because as H.L. Mencken famously said, “The only way a reporter should look at a politician is down.”

I could not bring myself to reconcile my own partisanship this election due to the chilling effect Trump has created by using his significant wealth and legal resources to subject journalists to needless litigation, the end result of which is a thinly veiled attempt at intimidating the press and swaying coverage in his favor. If anything, it clearly demonstrates how Trump is an enemy to not only the First Amendment, but also the core values our profession holds. He rallies himself and his treasure against the fundamental liberties newspapers practice, which makes him a considerable foe to our democracy.

True courage is taking a stand against such tactics, and continuing to print in spite of the threats. The press is a vital organ in our society, and our ethical obligations as journalists are to push back against the fascist demagogues and their dangerous encroachments into our freedom to print. But above all, our duty is to keep the public informed so that they can make their own decisions, rather than saddling up to would-be dictators who only benefit from our readers staying in the dark.

That is why I find it simply unfathomable— how a villain of the free press such as Trump— could win an endorsement from the same editorial board that I was once honored to be a part of.

Alas, I say with great sadness that a pair of clown shoes could have probably made a more sound editorial decision. I hope you all feel proud of yourselves for getting one under, because I am nothing short of ashamed to know that my name once appeared alongside yours on the masthead.

Society controls the future, not the president Syerra Wycoff Bagshaw Columnist To say that this campaign has been a rough one would be an understatement.

It’s been grueling, drawn out, and tiresome. But, here we are, we made it. By this time a president will have been announced and we will know who the next leader of our country will be.

While this has been such a trying time, and I believe there to be more trials in the future, I wanted to take a moment to appreciate how politically involved our community has been.

I fear the one thing that cripples us as a society is our trepidation in democratic participation, but so many people have been outspoken and encouraged voting, even if it’s for the opposite party. For the most part, I’ve seen a ton of students on campus engage in political conversations, without there being indications of violence or hostility.

Political affiliation is a topic that is broached with caution, as people tend to feel strongly about the way they feel

Six turnovers defined the outcome of CSC’s last home game of the season against Black Hills State University, Spearfish, South Dakota. Even with more than 400 yards of total offense, the Eagles failed to outlast the Yellow Jackets, 21-19.

Junior quarterback Matt Vinson, of Box Elder, South Dakota, completed 28 passes for 300 yards and two scores, but also tossed up five interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns.

Despite giving the ball to BHSU multiple times, the Eagles were still in a solid position to take the game. With just under three minutes in the fourth quarter, Keenan Johnson, redshirt freshman of Chadron, picked off Yellow Jacket quarterback Ryan Hommel, sophomore of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, setting up the Eagles in prime scoring position deep in BH territory, at the 38-yard line. However, Vinson and the Eagle offense failed to gain a yard, turning the ball over on downs.

“The defense had a great day,” offensive lineman Travis Romsa, redshirt sophomore of Burns, Wyoming, said. “But the offense couldn’t get anything going. We just made too many mistakes.”

On CSC’s last offensive possession, Vinson completed one of his touchdown passes to Matt Reader, redshirt sophomore of Appleton, Wisconsin, bringing the score to 2119. It was Reader’s second TD reception, the first coming about midway through the final quarter. On the ensuing onside kick attempt, the Yellow Jackets were able to recover, and seal the victory.

Results of the exhibition games do not count toward either team’s regular-season record, but can prove valuable for various reasons.

The Eagle men’s basketball team started its season dropped two exhibition games against D-I schools.

Thursday, Nov. 3 in front of a rowdy crowd of more than 1,100, the Eagles took on a talented D-I opponent the University of Wyoming, Laramie, at Eastern Wyoming College, in Torrington. The Eagles fell to the Cowboys, 75-50.

Monday, the team fell to the University of Nebraska Lincoln Huskers 98-45 at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln.

In Wyoming, CSC created opportunities early, rebounding well and playing tough in the paint. Junior Bronte Corbray, of Seattle, opened the scoring, drilling a 3-pointer. After a few possessions of missed shots and turnovers, by both teams, Austin Hall, junior of Aurora, Colorado, went coast-to-coast, putting CSC up 5-2.

The Cowboys answered with a few layups of their own, took the lead 6-5, and never looked back. The Cowboys, utilized a large-size advantage and dominated in the paint. UW finished with 34 points inside, compared to CSC’s 16.

Despite not being able to score well from the field, the Eagles played sharp, only committing 11 turnovers, a slight advantage on UW’s 17.

Corbray led the team in the scoring column with 12 points and added four rebounds. The Eagles’ leading scorer from last season Warren Gordon, senior of Indianapolis, finished with eight points and four boards. Gordon also contributed three assists to spur the offense.

One player had a hometown advantage. Jason McManamen, senior of Torrington, Wyoming, led the Pokes with 15 points and four rebounds. Louis Adams, a 6-foot-4-inch, junior of Chicago, grabbed seven rebounds to lead all players. Adams also chipped in 10 points.

Monday the team traveled to the opposite side of the state, and despite struggling with an ankle injury, Eagle forward Jordan Perry, junior of Murrieta, California, led the team with eight points and pulled down three rebounds. Perry also added a steal to his performance.

“It was a great experience to play against a Big 10 school at Pinnacle Bank Arena in that type of environment,” Leigh Saffin, redshirt freshman of Warrnambool, Australia, said.

Sam Harvey, freshman of West Bromwich, England, was unable to contribute any baskets to the Eagle’s effort. However, Harvey walked away as the team’s leading rebounder with five during his 13 minutes of play.

Saffin was good for two of five 3-point shots and one rebound.

Both Darius Polley, junior of Amarillo, Texas, and Corbray racked up six points and grabbed four rebounds. Polley also made three of his nine attempted baskets.

Gordon managed to add five points for the Eagles. With a total of three, the senior guard led the Eagle men in assists as well.

The 2016-17 regular season is set to begin for the Eagles at Bellevue University, Bellevue at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Volleyball team unable to sweep SD rivals The Eagles volleyball team beat South Dakota School of Mines but lost to Black Hills State University Brianna Wilson & Caleb Wiederhold Reporter & Cartoonist After a four-set battle against the South Dakota School of Mines, Rapid City, the Eagles earned a “W” Friday at the Chicoine Center, but tallied another “L” the next night, losing to Black Hills State University, Spearfish, South Dakota, Saturday. CSC’s overall record now stands at 7-18 and their RMAC record at 6-10.

The Eagles struggled the first two sets against Mines, taking the first with 26-24 and losing the second 28-26. They rallied in the last two, however, to finish 25-20 and 25-18.

During the last two sets, the Eagles gained discipline and consistency, according to Head Coach Riann Mullis. Overall, the players struggled to keep control of the ball during their serves and their passes, Mullis said.

During the first set, the teams were tied seven times, the last at 24-24. Alia Brennan, senior middle hitter of Chadron, and Madison Webb, sophomore of Loveland, Colorado, ended the set with a kill and service ace, respectively.

The Hardrockers took the lead in set No. 2 until the Eagles tied the score at 19-19.

Possession bounced back and forth, and the score was tied again at 25-25, and then again at 26-26. South Dakota Mines ended the set with two kills.

The Eagles came back in force during the third, scoring three-straight points, Gaby Varela, junior of Dorado, Puerto Rico, delivered the final blow.

The Hardrockers struggled to keep up during set No. 4 after the Eagles broke a 7-7 tie.

While first two sets were tense, Mullis said that home-court advantage helped the team pull through.

Rudy Leasau, senior of LaMesa, California, led with 20 kills, Brennan and Varela followed with 12 and 10, respectively. Webb logged 50 assists.

Emily Bruce, junior of Centerton, Arkansas, led the team defensively with 21 digs, Varela ended with 13, and Laesau, 11.

“We’re disappointed we didn’t make the RMAC Tournament, but we’re just going to focus on the last two games and get some wins,” Mullis said. “We know what we need to focus on in the off-season.”

Saturday, against BHSU, the Eagles took the first set before dropping the last three despite earning a few temporary leads.

Brennan recorded a total of 16 kills.

Varela accomplished 13 kills, while Leasau marked 11 kills and one ace. Webb created 48 assists.

Defensively, Bruce put up 21 digs with Leaseu recording 14, and Varela, 13. Brennan put up five blocks, while Webb and Timmi Keisel, redshirt freshmen of Fleming, Colorado, contributed three each.

In the first set, the Eagles managed to pull a six-score streak, ahead at 12-7 and even winning 25-17.

The second set ended with Black Hill State winning 29-27. The Eagles managed a temporary lead 6-4. But, the Yellow Jackets started 4-0 in the set and followed it up with six-score streak at 13-10.

The Yellow Jackets started the third set with another six-score streak and won 25-17.

The Eagles did ensure chances in the fourth set, such as a five-score streak that put them ahead 11-9. However, Black Hills State ended a close set 25-23, to end the game.

Mullis said the team will need to focus on discipline going into the final two games.

“The fact that we competed and fought hard, I’m happy with that,” Mullis said, despite the loss.

The Eagles will play again Friday against Colorado Christian University and Saturday against Colorado School of Mines. Both games are home and will start at 6 p.m.

Glasgow, Helmick earn gold at 1st meet Janelle Kesterson Opinion Editor The Chadron State wrestling team opened its season Saturday at the Cowboy Open hosted by the University of Wyoming, Laramie.

The Eagles were led by Sean Glasgow, redshirt freshman of Newark, New Jersey, 149-pounds, who was the champion in the amateur bracket, and Chance Helmick, junior of Beatrice, 174-pounds, in the elite division.

Glasgow won all four of his matches—two ending in major decisions and two in decisions. Helmick pinned one of his opponents, won by major decision over one and won one match by injury default.

Taylor Summers, senior of Plymouth, 133-pounds, went 3-1 during the tournament in the elite division. He walked off the mat at the end of the tournament with two wins by decision and one by major decision.

Cooper Cogdill, sophomore of Chadron, 285-pounds, went 4-2 and placed fourth of 19 wrestlers in the elite heavyweight division, putting a pin, a tech fall, and two decisions on the board for CSC. Brandon Kile, sophomore of Hastings, 125-pounds, and Matt Kindler, freshman of David City, 197-pounds, went 3-2 and 4-2, respectively, both earning fourth place in the amateur division.

Sophomore Rulon Taylor, of Curtis, heavyweight, went 4-2 in the amateur division and posted a pin in 2:12.

“I feel good about our top end guys and some of our younger guys,” Head Coach Brett Hunter said. “Some guys are still lacking effort so we need to be more consistent with our effort.”

Hunter also said that he thinks the team is on track right now. He has slowed down the preseason and he thinks that the team has been progressing each week. He also says they are progressing where they need to be at the end of the season unlike previous years.

Last year, the team had tremendous results at the beginning of the season, but wore out before regionals when it counted. This year the team is geared up to be ready when the matches matter.

“Chance Helmick, Sean Glasgow, and Taylor Summers have been very impressive so far.

But it’s going to take a full team to reach our goals,” Hunter said.

The Eagles will have their annual intrasquad match, the Black and Cardinal Classic, at 6 p.m. today in the NPAC, and will be on the road again next Saturday, Nov. 19 to the University of Nebraska at Kearney Holiday Inn Open.

Garcia qualifies for championships Justine Stone Lifestyles Editor Alejandro Garcia, senior of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, became CSC’s first male cross country runner to qualify for the NCAA D-II Championships Saturday, just two weeks after becoming CSC’s first male runner to earn RMAC first-team honors.

The first five teams and the next three individuals, not on those first five teams, qualified for the championships during the D-II South Central Region meet at Washington Park in Denver.

Garcia earned the third individual spot finishing 21st of 193 competitors. Garcia’s qualifying time on the 10k course was 32 minutes, 21 seconds.

Unexpected twists impress audience Reporter The Chadron Arts Center was lit by sunlight filtered through stained glass windows and white Christmas lights strewn across leafless trees as two choral ensembles performed for an estimated audience of 77 community members.

Una Taylor, music professor and chair for the music department, directed the Arioso. Taylor is also involved in the Community Choir, Graduate Council, and Teacher Education Committee.

The choir began with a Renaissance piece, “Ave Maris Stella,” by Jacob Obrecht (1450-1505), in a capella. Bobby Pace, CSC accompanist, accompanied the choir on the piano for the second piece, “Stabat Mater Dolorosa,” by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710-1736).

Pace was joined by Brooks Hafey, assistant professor, on the piano for the third song, “Liebeslieder Walzer,” by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897). This piece was more moving than the first two, but not near as much as one to follow.

“The Seal Lullaby,” by Eric Whitacre (b. 1970) highly contrasted the upbeat melody of the previous. Whitacre’s piece was much slower, though not with a sorrowful tone.

While it started out less than extraordinary with two soloists, Nikki Bunnel, senior of Alliance, singing soprano, and Dara Edwards, senior of North Platte, singing alto, it soon took a surprising change. With Pace on drums, Taylor using a shaker and Edwards, claves—a percussion instrument made of two wooden sticks—the song had a jungle feel.

Asha Mullins, sophomore of Chadron, sang soprano for the final piece, “Makedonska Humoreska,” by Todor Skalovski (19092004). Since the final song was in another language, Taylor explained it was about marriage before the song began. There was also a description in the program which said, “Hey! We always squabble; we always fight. This is love!? Since we got married, we spent all our money; we squandered everything, for heaven’s sake!”

The Arioso left to applause and the men’s ensemble entered.

Joel Schreuder, music professor, directed them,and in contrast to Taylor who positioned herself in front of the Arioso, stood among the men’s ensemble and participated in the choir.

Before the pieces began, Schreuder explained that it was hard to find music for a choir with

little variation in tone.

“There’s basically seven baritones here, so I had to look in some interested places for music,” Schreuder said.

The first piece, “Missa in honorem sancti Caroli Borromaei,” by C. Hegmann, was found in the public domain, Schreuder said. Students share Christmas cheer Steven Crews Reporter About 58 students packed approximately 110 shoe boxes to send at Operation Christmas Child Box Packing in The Hub 9 p.m. Friday.

High Rise Resident Director Mariah Nelson led the event. This event allowed students to come and pack gifts in shoe boxes. The gifts were for boys and girls between the ages of 2 and 14. The gifts were toys, school supplies, non-liquid hygiene items, accessories and a personal note. All the gifts included in the boxes were donated.

The toys that included available to give were toy cars, yo-yos, jump ropes, balls, and toys that light up and make noise.

The school supplies were pens, pencils and sharpeners, crayons, notebooks, paper, solar calculators, and coloring and picture books.

The non-liquid hygiene items were toothbrushes, bar soap, combs, and washcloths.

The accessories were T-shirts, socks, hats, sunglasses, hair clips, jewelry, watches, flashlights and more.

While students packed shoe boxes, resident assistants that were working the event would read letters on how this positively affected the kids they were helping. The letters that were read were sent from the kids who received the shoe boxes.

“It helped me realize I’m very fortunate and blessed and I need to share those blessings,” Resident Assistant Chelsea Haynes, 21, junior of Auburn, said. “I also realized that we can have a huge impact with this program.”

Everyone at the event was excited when packing his or her shoe boxes. The look on everyone’s face displayed that students were happy to do their part to help.

“I like to give and spread joy across the world because it’s our job as people to help each other, and to give joy to others is to receive,” Resident Assistant Alisha Heelan, 21, junior of Lewellen, said.

2 prizes awarded at pool tourney Caleb Wiederhold Cartoonist Natti Tadesse, 21, freshman of Ethiopia, won first place in The Pit’s one-on-one pool tournament of the fall semester and won a 32-inch Vizio television as his prize, Thursday night.

Around 60 people attended the pool tournament and 48 of them signed up and competed in the tournament. Karl McFarlane, graduate student of Montego Bay, Jamaica, and Evan Smith, 21, junior of Gillette, Wyoming, hosted the pool tournament.

The prizes were the television and an Ion Flash Cube Bluetooth speaker. The first place winner chose between one of the prizes, while the second place winner earned the left-over prize. Sadly, there were no third place prizes this time.

The tournament came to an end when Tadesse defeated Courtland Joshua, 22, senior

of Donaldsonville, Louisiana. While Tadesse chose the television for his prize, the Bluetooth speakers now belong to Joshua.

Tadesse said it was great being the winner in the tournament. Joshua said he was okay being in second place and said that Tadesse deserved the win.

Mauricio Santos, 18, freshman of Needles, California, a first-time semifinalist that was defeated by Joshua, thought it was a fun experience and said, “There’s a lot of competition.”

Armondo Martinez, 20, sophomore of Lytle, Texas, another semifinalist that was defeated by Tadesse, said it was challenging being in the pool tournament and “nerveracking.” Nevertheless, he said it was fun and exciting, even though he was hoping to win a prize.

The Pit’s next pool tournament will be sometime in the spring semester and will be a two-against-two game. Tadesse said he would participate.

Wesselmann advises a change in political perspective John Murphy Reporter

For the second straight year, leadership speaker Paul Wesselmann, the Ripples Guy, spoke to CSC students in the Student Center, this year with the topic of “Shut Up You Stupid Crazy Meany: Changing how we fight about politics, religion, and everything else.”

With roughly 80 students attending, many repeats from last year, Wesselmann immediately began his talk by making the point that he wasn’t trying to change who you vote for in this year’s election, but was curious to see if he could change the way we look at people who support different candidates.

“Not everyone is as rational, informed or as nice as they could be,” he said. “But that is still no reason to not like them.”

He said no matter what, the election is going to happen, someone will win, someone will lose, and all hell is going to break loose.

“Paul did a great job speaking last year and Student Senate voted to have him return this

year,” Chris Green, associate athletic director and event organizer, said. “With the upcoming election I thought this would be a great topic for students and staff to hear.”

As there is in this year’s election, there’ are always people with different views. Wesselmann talked about Supreme Court Justice Ginsburg and the late Justice Scalia. Justice Ginsburg and Justice Scalia had opposite views when it came to politics, but were said to be best friends. They were never seen disagreeing with each other no matter what the situation was.

Wesselmann proceeded to ask, “Who is your Scalia; who is your friend with different views, but you still are good friends with?”

He also said if you want to learn and grow, you need to find the strength and courage to step away from people you know and surround yourself with people who are different than you.

At the end of the presentation, Wesselmann gave every student two separate cards with inspirational quotes on them. Before

looking at the cards, students had to swap each card twice with other students. One of the cards that the students received was for themselves, while the other was meant for a friend of their choosing.

In closing, Wesselmann asked the students to leave remembering two things. He reminded the students the definition of empathy, trying to imagine what it’s like to be in someone else’s shoes, and sympathy, feeling sorry for someone. With the upcoming election, we need to show empathy. We need to try to get an idea of why someone believes the way they do about a candidate and not get mad about it.

The second thing Wesselmann asked students to remember was that every single person in the world has a different story. Not everyone is as rational, informed, or as nice as they could be, but neither are you.

“Try to spread some ripples on campus tonight,” Wesselmann said, “Spend 30 seconds of your night trying to make someone’s day better.”
