PAVILION TO HOST ALCOHOL AWARENESS EVENT

DRONE USE REQUIRES VP PERMISSION

“This is how we rope - How to Partee at the Pavilion” will be celebrated at 8 p.m., Nov. 20 at the Coffee Agriculture Pavilion. The event is sponsored for alcohol awareness week and there will be dummy roping with impairment goggles, other games, food, drinks, and a DJ.

CSC President Randy Rhine sent out a campus wide email Tuesday informing students and staff that drone use on campus is not allowed without prior approval. For permission, students and staff should contact Jon Hansen, vice president for enrollment management, marketing, and student services.

Veterans Day is a day of honor for those who have served our country with military service. Wednesday, a program was hosted in Mari Sandoz Chicoine Atrium to honor Veterans.

“Such programs became an annual celebration of veterans service,” Nate Reicks, assistant professor of military science from Kearney, said.

The event was consisted of the Flag ceremony and opening remarks. Cadet Caleb Geiger, 20, sophomore of Cozad, talked about ROTC at CSC. The guest speaker, Stacy Sweeney, talked about veterans, and their contribution to our lives. The Dawes County Veterans of Foreign Wars–Gray Eagle Post 1375 announced that two students

earned scholarships.

“Veterans Day program make people more aware of the sacrifices during the years,” he said.

“What I would say about veterans is that they have served this country for years, and they deserve respect and honor from all citizens in this country,” Zakaria Ben Cheikh, 23, junior of Morocco, Casablanca, said.

Ceremonies are held all across the country to celebrate these honored warriors. But sometimes veterans just want to sit down, share a story, and grab something to eat.

The Military/Veteran’s Resource Center Open House was an opportunity for veterans of all ages to do this.

The center was renovated in August from the old West Court 26 apartment

building for the use of students who are also members of the military. The event went on from noon - 3 p.m., Wednesday and attendees included students and local veterans.

Chris Singpiel, military and veteran’s services coordinator, saw the event as a way for students and veterans to be aware of the repurposed building. The building is there to give military students a place to access the resources made available to them.

Resources available to students include classroom assistance, tuition assistance and adjustment to college life.

Singpiel also shared a new resource known as V-Tec, allowing students to speak to their doctors via the internet.

The resource would be similar to a Skype call to ensure they continue a proper diet, continued use of medication and other medical advice.

Hinman concludes Fall 2015 Graves Lecture Series Jay Feltson Reporter

“The trick to having a happy and successful life is how we look at things,” Peggy Hinman said Tuesday night.

Hinman is a motivational speaker and was the guest lecturer at the Graves Lecture Series. She gave a talk on how to improve all aspects of life with her speech titled “Life: It Depends on How You Look at It.” Hinman explained that if a person always sees things in a negative way then they will never be happy, but if they take the time to look for the positives and appreciate things more then that person will live a happier life. She backed that statement with scien-

tific facts, stating that our thoughts create protein in the front of our brains. Positive thoughts release a stable protein which she later explained was dopamine and when that is released it makes a person up to 31 percent more effective. When a person has negative thoughts those thoughts then turn into unstable protein which can make a person tired and feel powerless. She credits negative thoughts for people being tired even though they have just woken up.

With wall-to-wall attendance from mostly CSC students and faculty members, Hinman promoted the book, “The HighWays of 8 to Great,” which is written by MK Mueller with 20 percent of the proceeds going to help fund the shop with a cop pro-

gram this winter. She attributes most of her success and happiness to this book because she said at one point in time she “was a student who didn’t measure up to her academic potential.”

Hinman believes that positivity is the key to helping a person reach his or her full potential and the simple steps in the “The High-Ways of 8 to Great” program will help to change the lives of others. She later went on to explain to the audience that if success is where a person plans to get their happiness from, they will never be happy because once they reach one goal the brain will automatically set a new one for them.

Steven Allen, 24, junior of Knoxville, Tennessee, said that he found the lecture

“interesting because of the way she talked about success and her beliefs on happiness.”

He also said that he believes he could apply the things she spoke about in his everyday life, by being more positive in every situation no matter how bad things seem to get.

Hinman told the audience that “90 percent of external happiness is predicted by how the brain processes the world,” meaning that if a person sees something as completely good then they will be happy but if they also see the bad then they won’t be as happy as they could have been. We are overall happier when we choose to be happy in that moment instead of processing the bad things that might have also happened was something that she explained.

NGLC road show makes a stop at CSC Laurie Le Pape Reporter

Guest speaker Tony Malmberg, founder and president of Rancher Management Company came from 5-10 p.m., Monday in the Student Center Ballroom to talk about the practice of Holistic Management.

Malmberg owned and operated Twin Creek Ranch, south of Lander, Wyoming, for 31 years.

Malmberg explained about Holistic Management, which he has been practicing for over 25 years; he provided insight on how Holistic Management deals with ecosystems, finance and social relation.

“It’s one of those that is not taught in the learning, it is something when you hear it, that makes sense and why haven’t you heard of it yet,” Zach Klemp, junior of Omaha, said.

TONY MALMBERG sage grouse habitat, wildlife friendly fences and migrations, riparian habitat and migratory songbird population.

Malmberg managed and consulted ranches in the Western United State for almost 20 years. He received the National Environmental Stewardship Award from the National Cattlemen Beef Association.

He is a managing member of the Savory Institute, LLC, who promotes the restoration of the worlds grasslands.

Since the “loss of grasslands leads to cli-

mate change, floods, droughts, famine, and worldwide poverty.”

Most people attending the event were related to ranching either with a ranching background or students wanting to pursue a future in agriculture.

“I am a ranch management major, who is very interested in the ranch business so I wanted to learn more about ranching business and management,” William Krause, freshman of Spring Branch, Texas, said.

Students said they were interested in Malmberg stories so they could be more informed about the Holistic Management.

“To learn more about the Practice of Holistic Management but also to learn more about natural systems, because I think a lot in the agriculture field will have to sift back to a natural way to continue the means of production,” Sadie Bolze, senior of Blair said.

The event was hosted by Ron Bolze, coordinator of Nebraska Grazing Lands Coalition and UNL Extension; it included meals for the audience.

Poverty awareness raised through hunger banquet Students in Shaunda French’s CA 239 Event Planning and Leadership class are hosting CSC’s Oxfam Hunger Banquet Nov. 16. Anyone wishing to attend should contact students in one of the two sections of the class or French at sfrench@csc.edu or 308-432-6302.

Each person is asked to bring three canned food items to donate to the food pantry. The pantry asked specifically for jars of peanut butter, chicken broth, canned meat, dry milk, canned fruit, canned veggies, canned spaghetti sauce, mac n’ cheese, canned beans, boxes of non-sweet cereal and/or standard pasta.

There will be two sections of the event in the Student Center Ballroom, one at 5 p.m. and one at 7 p.m. The guest speaker for both sections will be Pastor Ann Sundberg of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

French participated in an Oxfam Hunger Banquet at the University of Central Missouri while working on her masters program. “I think it’s important for the community to be aware of the poverty issues that are prominent in the local, regional, national, and global levels,” French said.

CAB allocates $900 to alcohol awareness event

CSCEA Scholarship applications now accepted Applications are being accepted for the 2016 Chadron State College Education Association Scholarship. This scholarship is funded

by CSCEA faculty members and provides two $500 scholarships to be awarded in the Spring 2016 semester. Students applying for the scholarship must be a full time student, working on their first undergraduate degree, have completed 30 credit hours at the time of the application, and may not have already received a CSCEA scholarship. Applications are due in the START Office at 4 p.m., Nov. 20.

The Ripples Guy comes to CSC tonight Paul Wesselmann, the Ripples Guy, is a leadership speaker who provides training at conferences, meetings, and retreats. He also sends out a “Ripples” email every Monday that is read by over 20,000 people. Wesselmann will be coming to campus today. He will be presenting two sessions: faculty/staff and students. The topic for the faculty/staff session is “Don’t Strangle the Whiners: Tips for dealing with difficult students and colleagues” and will be from 11 a.m. – noon. The student session is from 7 – 8 p.m. and the topic is “Ripples of Leadership: How your actions can improve the campus and the world.”

Study abroad program available to all students Applications are still being accepted for a justice studies study abroad program to London, Paris, and the Hague, available to students of all majors, on campus and online students, in May 2016.

The guest speaker is a woman who was intoxicated while texting and driving when she wrecked her vehicle. She survived but her friend did not. She is required to speak about this situation as a part of her probation.

hol awareness event is at 8 p.m., Nov. 20 at the Coffee Agriculture Pavilion.

Next week, Senate will vote on an allocation of $3,000 for RLA to host a speaker, Jamie Utt. If Senate approves the allocation, RLA will provide another $2,000 plus some additional costs. Utt will have two sessions and will speak about diversity and consent sometime in January.

The tentative date for The Big Event is April 2016. The Big Event coordinators are asking for an allocation of $13,494.11. An open forum will be hosted at 3 p.m., Monday for students to discuss this allocation.

A general assembly will be on Friday for all of Senate and its subsidiary committees to discuss their group projects for the remainder of the year.

The Student Senate workshop is from 5-7 p.m., Saturday. Senators will discuss Robert’s Rules and major projects that Senate will be doing.

Student Trustee Mikayla Gallagher is traveling to Wayne for a NSCS board meeting this weekend.

Abstain from abstaining

L

ast week at the Nov. 2 Senate meeting, six senators abstained from voting on the renewal of the Student Health 101 magazine.

Abstaining from a vote means, “to choose not to vote,” according to Merriam-Webster dictionary.

Monday night, Deena Kennell, adviser to Student Senate, explained to the senators what Robert’s Rules says on abstaining from a vote. Robert’s Rules are the parliamentary procedure rules Senate says they’ll follow.

Robert’s Rules says that it is a senator’s duty to vote when he or she has an opinion about the matter being discussed.

Senators should abstain from voting when the issue being discussed affects the senator personally, in a way that doesn’t affect the rest of the senators.

As elected members of Student Senate, senators have the duty to advocate for those the senators represent.

Abstaining from a vote, when you have an opinion or a say on the matter, is letting your constituents down. There is no excuse for not voting, except when, like Robert’s Rules states, the senator personally benefits from the vote. Excuses such as not wanting to make people angry or feeling like a vote no won’t make a difference in the outcome is no excuse to abstain from voting.

We can appreciate when Liberal Arts Senator Nathaniel Brown abstained from voting at the Sept. 28 meeting, when the senators were voting on allocating money to a club he is CAB representative for.

But abstaining from a vote because you’re scared or worried about what others might think of you if you vote no, is not acceptable in our books.

Students on this campus elect the senators we want to see stand up for what we want, to take a stand, and to let the students’ voices be heard. By abstaining from a vote, students’ voices aren’t being heard and constituents are being let down.

Even if the vote is determined, based on the number of votes, before all the senators have voted, voting no at least shows senators care and are letting the students’ voice be heard.

The Eagle asks senators to take a stand and vote.

We ask senators to have an opinion and make that opinion heard.

Column The cold winter weather has set in which means now being cooped up trying to find something to do. Search no further because the next two weeks have a lot in store.

From 7-10 p.m., Saturday is Free Bowling Night at Saya Lanes. Come play free games of bowling and enjoy free pizza. Present your student ID at the door and an evening of entertainment is yours.

The next weekend at 7 p.m., Nov. 22 is Free Movie Night at the Eagle Theatre. All you need to do is show your student ID at the door. Xi Delta Zeta will hosting a canned food drive at Free Movie Night as well. So help out the less fortunate and bring a non-perishable item for the local food pantry.

If you want improve your leadership skills Student Senate will be hosting a leadership conference Nov. 17-21. Various speakers will be coming to campus help make you a better leader. Take this opportunity for personal growth and a good time. For more details on the speakers that are coming to campus please see the flyers posted around campus.

Syerra At Large Syerra Wycoff Bagshaw Contributor Senators moral duty and obligation is to vote in policies that their constituents want; in the recent Senate meeting Student Senate deliberated upon the reinstatement of the Health 101 service provided on campus. A large amount of student fees goes towards this service and it provides helpful tips and reminders on how to stay healthy, manage course loads, sexual assault awareness on campus, etc.

My concern as a student senator at-large is that the service is not being utilized to its full capacity, and as such is not worth the money being allocated towards it. Upon re-

ceiving notification of the discussion I talked to a few constituents and asked if they were subscribed to the service, to which they all replied no.

I would like to use this column to reach out to students that I may not get the chance to talk to, or students that don’t know who to give feedback to; so I submit the question to the public, is the Health 101 service something you’d like to see reinstated in the following school year, or is it something that you’d rather not see your funds go toward? Or, if it is something you’d like funded, how can the subject matter be better delivered? SENATESPEAKS A word from the Student Senate President Senate is excited to announce our Leadership Summit the week of Nov. 17 – 21.

Our first speaker is going to be Brian Banks, a former NFL player for the Falcons. Banks will be speaking about false sexual assault accusations and starting your life over at 7 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

The 18th will host JoAnne Owens-Nausler.

Owens-Nausler will be discussing health and wellness in her breakout sessions at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., and then she will be giving the presentation “If your horse is dead… Dismount!!” at 7 p.m., all in the Student Center.

There will then be a meet and greet with Student Senate senators at 6 p.m., Nov. 19. Come and discuss issues you see on campus and have coffee and hors d’oeuvres.

The last speaker of the Summit will be Nick Scott. Scott will be talking about overcoming odds and being a leader on campus and in your life. Scott is paralyzed from the waist down and overcame his odds by starting power lifting for wheel bound people. Scott will be talking at 7 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

At every speaker you attend, you will have the opportunity to put your name in a drawing for a book voucher for next semester.

The drawing will take place after Scott’s presentation for the winner. You must be present to win.

Avoid vaping in high traffic areas Ty Grasz Contributor Smoking, while not as common as it used to be, is still a major part of today’s society. While I have my opinion on smoking in general, I’m going to focus on one area that is bothersome to me on campus. On multiple occasions, I have been walking on the sidewalk and as I am passing someone smoking on the sidewalk, they blow their puff of smoke right as I’m about to walk by. While the smell of smoke may be pleasing to you, it is not pleasing to many of us who do not smoke. Would it hurt you to try and direct that smoke in another direction? Or even try to resist the urge to smoke until you are in a designated smoking area. But definitely don’t blow the biggest puff of smoke you can in a high traffic area.

I also have an opinion on these new vape pens or what ever they are called.

Judging by the size of the puff of smoke that comes out of a user’s mouth and nostrils, it seem like they are more like a vape chimney. What is with that? Are you inhaling that much or is that simply what that machine in your hand does? Either way, I think it makes you look ridiculous.

For starters, despite what people tell you vape pens are not healthy for you. If you don’t believe me, look at the research.

Second, it is not cool nor does it make you look cool to exhale that much smoke or vapor into the air. The word that comes to my mind is “idiot.” Thirdly, in the same way that people don’t want to deal with walking into cigarette smoke, people don’t want to deal with walking into a huge cloud of vapor. And I’ve come to notice that vapor lingers longer than cigarette smoke. So please, vape somewhere away from high traffic areas. It will make us non-vapers happy.

I realize that some of you who read this are partakers in smoking and vaping and might find this offensive. However, I think this is something that needed to be said and if nothing else, it might get you to think about the decision you are making in your life. I don’t have to tell you that smoking cuts your life short significantly, and I’m certain that vaping will eventually have research that will tell you the same thing.

TJ Aanenson, 19, freshman of Curtis, won a 32 inch TV at a pool tournament hosted by The Pit last Thursday night.

Aanenson beat Marcus Jacobs Jr., 20, freshman of Tampa, Florida, to claim the title. Jacobs went home with a Fitbit watch.

Finishing in third out of 68 participants was Kyle McClaren, 20, sophomore of New Underwood, South Dakota, who won a $40 Walmart Gift Card.

Karl McFarlane, graduate student of Montego Bay, Jamaica, organized the Pool Tournament in the Student Center.

“I organized these events because I’m very passionate about event planning and organizing,” McFarlane said. “I put on an event every Thursday night.”

Sheets with basic pool rules were handed out, but competitors were allowed to adjust the rules to their liking if both players agreed.

“I enjoy playing pool and there’s a lot of good kids in the tournament and I love to challenge myself,” McClaren said.

“I had tons of fun playing and watching my friends play too. I was really grateful to win third; it showed how much I improved from last year.”

Looking to collect some late season wins the Eagles faced off against RMAC opponents South Dakota School of Mines & Technology and Black Hill State University at home last weekend.

A large part of this victory was because the defense capitalized on many errors made by the Hardrockers. The Eagle’s offense had many opportunities to score in the threeset match. Gaby Varela, sophomore of Dorado, Puerto Rico, led the offense with 12 kills, and Rudy Leasau, junior of LaMesa, California, marked 10 kills. The two combined for 22 of the team’s 37 kills.

The Eagles also took advantage of the Hardrockers poor defense by scoring four aces in the game, three from Alexis Farris, sophomore of Blair, and the fourth ace from Justine Ackie, senior of Phoenix.

Freshman Madison Webb, of Loveland, Colorado, was a key factor in the game against the Hardrockers, leading the team in assists with 34 of the team’s 37 kills.

Defensively, the Eagles were dominate throughout the whole match against the Hardrockers. The Eagles totaled 11 blocks to the Hardrockers three. Sina Mauga, senior of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, led the team in blocks with a total of seven. Freshman Sierra Winkle, of Tucson, Arizona,

In the second game of the weekend against the Yellow Jackets, the Eagles hoped to keep the momentum going and post another win and go undefeated for the weekend. The Eagles offense was fluent. Leasau led the team in kills with 13; Varela, 11; of the

Webb earned more aces alone than the whole Yellow Jackets team combined. She led in assists with 44, which was also more than the Yellow Jackets team collected all together.

“Even though we struggled in the first set for a little while I believe that it was one of the best games that we played as a team this whole season,” freshman Tatyana Tuialii-Umi, of South Gate, California, said.

The Eagles dug up 52 kills attempts, which is 16 more than the Yellow Jackets. Winkle totaled 15 digs. McLain marked 10 and Leasau recorded nine. The trio combined for over 50 percent of the teams digs.

The Eagles dominated the stat sheet in the blocks category as well.

Mauga led with three and Alia Brennan, junior of Chadron, and Webb were both credited with one. The Eagles were in sync the whole night and continued to dominate the game from start to finish and ended up winning the match 3-0.

The Eagles play their final regular season game at 7 p.m., Saturday at the Chicoine Center against the Regis University Rangers. CSC is in a four-way tie for eighth place with Colorado Christian, CSU-Pueblo, and Adams State. The top eight teams will make the RMAC Tournament.

McKinney has been named D2Wrestle.com National Wrestler of the Week, Super Region Four Wrestler of the Week, and the RMAC Wrestler of the Week. He won the elite divison of the Cowboy Open with a major decision, three pins, and a forfeit in the final round.

Varela was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts against South Dakota Mines and Black Hills State. She recorded 23 kills on the weekend, an average of 3.83 per set. Varela carried a .571 hitting percentage and two blocks.

Banzhaf earned All-Region honors by placing 24th at the South Central Region Championships. She is only the second athlete to earn these honors, the other being CSC Track and Field All-American Stacy Girard in 2013. She came within 30 seconds of the school record.

Webb was named the RMAC Setter of the Week for her perfomance against South Dakota School of Mines and Black Hills State Universtiy.

She averaged 13 assists per set through the weekend. She recorded 34 assists on Friday and 44 on Saturday.

Eagles whip WNMU Mustangs, 31-13

Preston Goehring Sports Editor The Eagles scored 31 unanswered points against the Western New Mexico University Mustangs, winning 31-13. CSC improved to 5-5 on the season, 4-4 in conference play. WNMU fell to 3-7, 2-6 in the RMAC. “We got off to a rough start,” Max Gray, redshirt freshman of Arlington, Washington, said. “But we talked all week about staying focused even when things aren’t going our way. We subbed well to stay fresh, ran the ball well and focused on getting back our pass game.”

The Eagles have battled with injuries for the majority of the season.

Several key players have suffered injuries, forcing them to miss games.

“Coach Jay Long got his first start because a player in front of him got injured,” Gray said. “Everyone is ready at any moment to go in since we know anyone can go

down. When Danny O’Boyle got hurt I had to step in and just do as best as I could.”

Dylan Furrier, senior of Tucson, Arizona, led the defense with eight tackles. Senior Clay Cundall, of Greybull, Wyoming; Brian Wood, junior of Stockton, California; and Zecharie James, sophomore of Hampton, Virginia, each recorded six tackles. Senior Cole Montgomery, of Casper, Wyoming, intercepted a pass while recording five tackles.

CSC started the scoring streak with a seven-yard touchdown pass from Matt Vinson, sophomore of Box Elder, South Dakota, to Zac Bargen, senior of Chadron. After a few failed posessions, the Eagles scored again with another passing touchdown, this time to Matt Reader, redshirt freshman of Appleton, Wisconsin. CSC went into halftime with a 17-13 lead, thanks to a 21yard field goal from Alex Ferdinand, senior of Rapid City, South Dakota.

The next two touchdowns would be on the ground, one from Derek Jackson, sophomore of Pueblo West, Colorado, and the other from Robert Jackson, senior of Savannah, Georgia. Kevin Coy, redshirt freshman of Davenport, Florida, led the running backs with 108 yards, his first 100-yard game of his career.

Vinson finished with 191 yards and two touchdowns.

The Eagles will face Fort Lewis College for Senior Day, Saturday, at Elliott Field. The Skyhawks are 6-4 on the season, 5-3 in conference.

“They have gotten a lot better over the past years,” Gray said. “But our focus is to remain focused. It’s been us v. us all season. The emphasis is to play Eagle football whether it’s on offense, defense, or special teams. If we all do our jobs, we will be all right.”

The Eagles will attempt to make this the 10th season in a row with a winning record. Game time is set for noon.

3 wrestlers earn gold at Laramie Evan Clark Advertising Account Executive Following the season opener at the Cowboy Open Tournament Saturday at the University of Wyoming, Terrance McKinney, sophomore of Spokane, Washington, 149-pounds, earned D2Wrestle.com National Wrestler of the Week, RMAC Wrestler of the Week, and Super Region Four Wrestler of the Week. McKinney scored a 14-3 major decision in his first match, pinned his next three opponents and received a forfeit in the finals.

Along with McKinney, the Eagles had two other gold medalists at the Cowboy Open.

This was only the second time The Eagles have had more than one champion at the Cowboy Open and the first time they have had more than two champions in the same year.

The CSC gold medalists were Shane Rodenburg, freshman of Kent City, Michigan, 184-pounds; Luke Zeiger, sophomore of Glasgow, Montana, 133-pounds; and McKinney. Rodenburg and Zeiger were in the amateur, or younger, division and McK-

inney was in the elite, or older, division.

Zeiger pinned all five of his opponents, four of them in the first period; Rodenburg pinned three of his four foes and won an 11-3 major decision in the remaining match.

“The competition was solid, had an opportunity to wrestle some kids in D-I,” Rodenburg said.

Taylor Summers, sophomore of Plymouth, placed third winning four of five matches at 133-pounds in the elite division.

Summers recorded a decision win over his first opponent, 8-4, and a major decision in his second round, 15-2. Summers won his last two matches by decision and forfeit.

Conner Myers, freshman of St. Paul, Michigan, and Chance Helmick, sophomore of Beatrice, placed fourth in the amateur division. Myers is a 157-pound wrestler and Helmick competes at 165. Myers recorded a tech fall win over his first opponent. Myers finished with a record of 6-2 for fourth place. Helmick finished with a record of 5-2, placing fourth.

The CSC wrestlers will be host their annual intersquad dual, the Black and Cardinal Classic, 6 p.m., Friday in the NPAC.

Wake up and greet the hunting season That annoying alarm clock is buzzing to get you out of bed. However, it is not the typical wakeup call that screams, “Get to work.” This morning you get to go deer hunting. It’s the one time of the year that you jump out of bed with excitement drooling over, like a dog with a bone. Splash some water on your face, get your warm clothes on that you set out the night before, and brew a fresh pot of coffee.

Many veteran hunters will go to deer camp to feast on the last bit of deer meat from the year prior, before adding new meat to the freezer from the upcoming hunt. After breakfast you get the truck warmed up before heading to that honey hole that you scouted all year.

A trip to the tree stand or a ride to the hills puts you in position to wait. The sun begins to rise and that big mature deer exposes himself. All the hard work of setting up trail cameras and early mornings is about to pay off.

The first time hunter feels like Christmas is coming early. All night images of deer run through their heads.

Many will accompany their parents with hopes of finding that perfect first deer. The parents will devote all their effort to seeing a smile light up on their child’s face when they hold their first deer. In this instance, the size of the deer does not matter. The only thing that matters is the story of the hunt and who the hunt was shared with. Many memories will be made over the course of the next week that will last a lifetime.

The most important thing to remember during this exciting time is safety. Opportunities to shoot can come faster than expected, which can lead hunters to act before thinking. Always make sure the gun is on safety, only point the barrel at something you intend to shoot, wear hunter orange, and be aware of your surroundings.

There is no deer worth a life, no matter how big it may be.

Dylan Stansbury, junior of Crawford, set CSC’s cross country record with his 10k time of 31:23.2 at the South Central Regional Cross Country Championships Saturday in Canyon, Texas. Stansbury came in 27th and reduced his time from last year by four minutes and 14 seconds.

“I felt pretty good. I was only four places from qualifying for nationals and only two places from being AllRegion. I think I would have qualified for nationals if I was competing in a different regional championship meet,” Stansbury said.

Junior Nicky Banzhaf, of Chadron, finished the 6k 24th in 22:27 and shaved two and a half minutes off her time from last year. Her run placed her less than 30 seconds away from the CSC women’s cross country re-

cord, ran by former CSC Track and Field All-American Stacy Girard.

“I just kept praying, really trying to focus on God when I was tired. I didn’t race the race I wanted, but I’m proud of the team and myself. We moved up four spots and had some nice PRs,” Banzhaf said.

Alyse Henry, freshman of Rock Springs, Wyoming, came in 44th in a time of 22:50. Senior Rebecca Volf, of Wood River, was 52nd in 23:02.1, followed by Jayme Nunes, senior of Alliance, in 72nd with a time of 23:30.2. Finishing 73rd in 23:30.6 was junior Margaret Vinton, of North Platte. Sandra Pelayo, junior of Cozad, finished 95th in 23:56.9, and senior Sarah Townsend, of Douglas, Wyoming, completed the 6k in 126th with a time of 24:32.9.

Senior Evans Koech, of Nairobi, Kenya, finished 52nd with a time of 32:07.1. Levi Avila, sophomore

of Mitchell, ran 33:00.5 and placed 80th. Eric Yager, sophomore of Hot Springs, South Dakota, ran a 33:03.7, placing him 84th. Sophomore Phill Duncan, of Chadron, finished 101st in 33:2, and Kyle Dietsch, junior of Sheridan, Wyoming, placed 116th in a time of 33:52.7. Hank Jackson, junior of Lingle, Wyoming, came in 130th with a time of 34:17.5.

Dallas Baptist University’s senior Kelsey Bruce, of Brackettville, Texas, won the women’s race in 20:36, and Western State Colorado University’s Keifer Johnson, redshirt junior of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, won the men’s race in 29:50.5.

Adams State led the men’s team standings with 55 points. CSC finished 13th with 340.

Adams State also led the women’s team standings with 27 points.

The Eagles finished eighth with a total of 252.

Men return 5 players; women, 7 Preston Goehring Sports Editor Five players on the men’s basketball team that saw playing time last season returned for action. For the women’s team, seven players are returning, after graduating only two seniors.

Three of the five men returning include seniors Davante McCallam, of Miami; Jay Feltson, of Saginaw, Michigan, and Justyn Anderson, of Las Vegas.

Feltson and McCallam combined to average nearly 10 points and over seven rebounds.

Other returning players include Sharif Black, sophomore of Detroit; Leigh Saffin, redshirt freshman of Warrnambool, Australia; and Matt Reader, sophomore of Appleton, Wisconsin. Reader will miss the opening weekend because he is a wide receiver for the football team.

Coach Brent Bargen brought in seven transfer students and four new freshman for the roster. Billy Johnson, junior of Cedar Hill, Texas, averaged 19 points per game last season at Cedar Valley College.

Warren Gordon, junior of Indianapolis, transferred from Malcolm X Community College, where he averaged nearly 18 points per game and five assists.

Knowles shot 54.3 percent from the field last season, a record at CSC. Block led the team in free throw percentage, shooting 80 of 104. Chisom averaged nearly eight points per game.

Also returning for the Eagles are sophomores Maka Daysh, of Tauranga, New Zealand, and Kayla Mathews, of Adelaide, Australia. Daysh averaged 10 points per game and five rebounds. Mathews shot over 30 percent behind the three-point line.

The men’s team will open its season with an exhibition game at South Dakota State University, Brookings, 8:30 p.m., Friday. The women will open their season at the University of Wyoming, Laramie, 4 p.m., Sunday.

Breaking bad New Year’s habits may not be as difficult as it seems. A new year is right around the corner, and for most people now is the time they start creating their great New Year’s resolutions. For some people these don’t even revolve around health or nutrition at all, but the majority of them do. When Americans are looking at something to accomplish as a means of enjoying it, you’re more prone to completing that goal. Some tips to doing so would be finding a friend that has the same goals as you do. By getting a friend to do this with you gives not only you but your friend an accountability buddy.

Another tip would be getting adequate sleep, you should be getting around 6-8 hours of sleep every day. By controlling your sleeping patterns can reduce stress and give you the proper energy you need to crush the next day and everything you plan for that and for the future! With that being said, don’t fall into the flaws that Americans have put into place about resolutions. Create your own, use the keys and control your destiny! It’s hard, but it’s not impossible.

Local children enlightened by Science Days at CSC Ali Munk Reporter

Science enthused third, fourth and fifth grade students excitingly entered the Math and Science building early Saturday morning. They enjoyed a day with CSC science and education majors as they learned about sending rovers to Mars. They plan to explore a simulated Mars landscape and even tiny Martians, with hopes that their rover will complete the mission. The elementary school students would get the opportunity to video chat with Greg Peters, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory Research Staff of Pasadena, California.

They were anxious to get a further understanding of the rover building process in order to construct one later in the day.

It was during this session with Peters that the students were able to ask questions related to his work and gain knowledge of the rover missions.

“I have had the opportunity to work on three different teams of rovers,” Peters said when asked what his favorite project was to work on. “My favorite so far is the Mars Science Laboratory but after the Mars 2020 is complete I believe that will be my new favorite project.”

The students also learned the most important parts of a rover; the wheels and motor, it takes multiple types of engineers to complete these important parts. Also, it takes nine months for a rover to travel to Mars from Earth. The Science Day attendees also got an inside look into the Mars Helicopter and the future of Mars 2020.

The young rover specialists for the day, then divided into groups to create their own rover. Once the base of the rover was complete, they attached the wheels to the axel and glued the motor on top.

They tested the battery and motor to ensure functionality.

A rubber band was needed to connect the wheel axel to the motor which created movement. Lastly, a circuit of electricity needed to be created by connecting the switch, motor and battery for a hands-free moving rover.

Once the rovers were built, it was time to take them to Mars and put them to work collecting samples. The Mars landscape consisted of big rocks, gravel, and tiny Martians.

The objective was to explore Mars without hitting a large

rock which would cause damage or destroy the rover.

“I didn’t think our mission was a success,” fifth grader McKinley Fuller, of Chadron, said. “If we studied the terrain before, we would have been able to build the rover more durable for it to get around the rocks.”

After hours of learning, building, and testing rovers, Science Days came to an end leaving the students excited and with an interest in science.

CSC Science Professor Ann Buchmann said she enjoys bringing these hands-on and unique activities to young students, which they would not be able to experience in their classrooms.

The next Science Days is planned for 8:30 a.m., Saturday, at the Math and Science Building.

International Education Week to be celebrated Jordyn Hulinsky Managing Editor Through a joint efforts of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, International Education Week, IEW, will be celebrated across the nation Nov. 16-20.

According to the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs website, IEW “is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.”

It’s an opportunity to promote programs to benefit Americans for the global environment and to learn about new places.

The Bureau’s website states that they encourage

individuals and institutions to participate during the week.

For the first time, CSC will be participating in IEW. The International Club plans to promote global awareness on campus.

From 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Nov. 19, there will be a study abroad table with information about different programs set up in the Student Center.

There will also be an international coffee hour from 7-8 p.m., the same day, in the student center, where international students will give short presentations about their cultures.

The entire week, posters about different countries will be in the Student Center. The posters will aim to address stereotypes of each culture.

Music rings joyfully in audiences’ ears Tayler Saunders Reporter A crowd of nearly 200 people gathered to listen to the Chadron State College Community and Concert choirs’ performances on Sunday.

Una Taylor, associate professor of music, directed the community choir which included both students as well as community members. They opened the concert with six songs which were accompanied by Bobby Pace on the piano.

The concert choir under the

direction of Joel Schreuder, music professor, performed nine songs, which he said had a theme of “love and life.”

The first three songs were Italian songs about fire. The next three were about water, and the last three were about joy. A majority of the songs were pretty similar, except for the last song.

The title translates to, “Make a joyful noise for the Lord.” This song was upbeat and a faster pace than the rest of the set.

The audience members were pleased. Following the concert one audience member was over-

heard saying, “It almost made me believe heaven was real; the angels are here.”

The students participating in the concert choir are members of a class on campus. They have been working on the pieces for this concert since the beginning of the semester and will now begin working towards the Christmas Concert.

Schreuder said he encourages anyone who is interested in being a part of any of the five choir groups on campus to contact him for an opportunity to audition.

RLA event promotes diversity and acceptance Anastasia Zbarazhskaya Reporter The Residence Life Association, RLA, organized The Beauty of Diversity event for CSC students at 8 p.m., Monday in the Gold Room.

“I just wanted to show that we have a diverse population of students on campus which will show how they identify themselves,” Jayden Gubbels, 20, junior of Hubbard, the creator of this event, said.

The Beauty of Diversity was a great chance for students to discuss their interest with other people because they could meet other students who they had never seen before on campus, but with whom they have common topics for conversations. This event didn’t consist of surveys or questionnaires which are getting overused and not truthful be-

cause people are tired of them and don’t pay attention, giving basic answers on questions. Gubbels approached this process creatively, which helped her to avoid the routine.

She decided to use two sheets: one sheet for handprints with the sign about interests, another for describing things that students are afraid of.

Visitors found this idea interesting.

“I like this event, and I would like to have it again,” Kianna Hobbs-Dye, 19, junior of Newcastle, Wyoming, said. “Also, I love the idea with handprints; it’s fun.”

Around 70 students came to this event. They were talking, and discussing their interests. The Beauty of Diversity was a good organized event, which diversified the beginning of the week for CSC students.

RLA clues students in with life-sized board game Anh Le Reporter

Saturday night, the Student Center was filled with students running around, answering questions, trying to finish tasks to find the killer in the Life-size Clue Game. The event was hosted by the RLA from 9-11 p.m. in the Student Center. More than 30 people showed up and joined the game.

“It was a fun program,” Craig Phillips, 20, junior of Torrington, Wyoming, winner of both rounds, said after the game. “I would be eager to see more like this in the future.”

The rule was different from the board version. Students were divided into teams and took turn to roll the dice. In order to guess, each team had to answer a trivia question. If it was wrong, there were punishments given by the person in charge of the room. Then, they could guess the killer, the weapon and the place the murder took place. After each guess, the person in charge of the room would cross off either the wrong name, wrong weapon, or wrong place from each team’s paper until they guessed all three correctly. The first team to win could choose the prizes including movies, Bluetooth speakers, water bottles, beanbag chair, and cereals.

There was also a raffle at the end of the event to give away the rest of the prizes.
